Tarot for December 24th, 2106: Prudence

Today’s Tarot card is the 8 of Disks (Prudence).  With the North Node currently in Virgo trining Mercury retrograde in Capricorn encouraging reflective thought and communication in service of our karmic path and goals, and today’s Saturn/Uranus trine in fire signs encouraging action, this seems fitting.  The 8 of Disks falls within the realm of the Sun in Virgo, shining the light of consciousness on the process of growth while we wait for the harvest that results from our labors.

The Thoth deck’s version of the 8 of Disks shows a singular tree with large leaves curled protectively around its blossoms; this tree is not yet ready to bear fruit.  There is a story of a farmer who was so impatient for the harvest that he went out to the fields each day to tug upon the young shoots, hoping to make them grow faster.  But the process of growth is not something to be rushed.  Instead, we must tend to our trees carefully by nourishing the soil in which they grow, watering them diligently and removing harmful insects or weeds that would damage their growth, and when we have done those things, then we need to be patient and wait.  We can and should protect our trees and ourselves during times of growth, while our blossoms are still fragile and vulnerable.

Tending to all of these details meticulously is what the Sun in Virgo excels at, but we must recognize that the Virgo drive to perfection may well be in pursuit of unattainable goals.  The forces of nature in the form of drought or storm may still undermine our work.  Nevertheless, the process of tending our tree may yield worthwhile results even when they are not the harvest that we expected.  We learn from this process, and from our failures.  The Christian mystic St. Francis DeSales once said that if we spend an hour in meditation, even if the entire hour was spent bringing our attention back to the point of focus from where it has wandered, still that hour was well-spent.  So it is with this process of tending our tree, both in the material realm and the spiritual realm, as the physical discipline encourages the spiritual disciple, and vice versa.  Because Mercury is the ruler of Virgo, how we think and communicate about what we are growing matters – the 8 of Disks is very much about the application of our intelligence to physical processes.  Thus, it relates well to craftsmanship as well as the more obvious gardening metaphor of growth.  Now is the time to direct our intelligence to what we are creating, with careful attention to detail.

Astrology of December 24th, 2016: A Day to Get Things Done!

The Moon in Scorpio gives intensity and focus to our emotions and instincts today, and is supported by three lovely aspects from early morning to afternoon.  In the wee hours we saw a trine from the Moon in Scorpio to Neptune in Pisces, giving power to our dreams and a spiritual, romantic glow to our mood, hopefully resulting in some good dream journaling for those who have been taking advantage of that practice.  That was followed a few hours later by the Moon sextiling Mercury in Capricorn, so that what we’ve been thinking about and expressing during this time has been supportive of what we feel.  Of course, since Scorpio tends to be secretive and a Mercury in Capricorn is often on the reticent side, that probably hasn’t made for a lot of discussion this morning and heading into the afternoon, but at least it’s not likely to be an uncomfortable silence.  😉  However, this is a great time for reflective thought on the hidden parts of our lives – whatever truths we uncover now we are likely to be ready to face rationally and make good use of the insights we find.

The big astrological news today is the trine from Saturn in Sagittarius to Uranus in Aries, exact in the late afternoon/early evening, but exerting its influence all weekend due to the slow movement of these planets.  This is an alliance between our need for change and our discipline, giving us the strength and energy to do what needs to be done in service both to our highest ideals and the fulfillment of our individual paths.  The Moon in Scorpio sextile Pluto in Capricorn following within 4 minutes of the exact Saturn/Uranus trine only strengthens our resolve.  This is an amazing time for getting things done!  It’s also a wonderful time to gain insights about our own insecurities and inhibitions in ways that we can face and work through, recognizing that even though we are imperfect, those imperfections are likely not as terrible as we often make them out to be.  Uranus celebrates the unique, and our flaws are part of what contributes to each person’s distinctiveness and our souls’ beauty.  We are perfect in our imperfection.

Since Uranus loves the shocking and new, we may experience some surprises this weekend, but Saturn lends a steadying hand to keep those surprises from being too out-of-control.  The combination of Saturn and Uranus this weekend is a wonderful one for celebrations, since Uranus encourages us to be lively and let down our hair and Saturn keeps Uranus from getting excessive and helps us pace ourselves, while Uranus keeps Saturn from getting too stuffy and rules-bound.

The only slight dampener to the day is a square from the Moon in Scorpio to Venus in Aquarius at the end of the night, and even that isn’t too disruptive, just perhaps encouraging us to take a break from some of the emotional intensity of this weekend and enjoy some more mental pursuits like reading or a good film or good late-night conversation around pilfered milk and cookies.  😉  This starts a void-of-course period that will last through most of tomorrow, making that day a day to enjoy the companionship of loved ones without starting anything new and important or doing anything particularly serious beyond having a good time together.  🙂
