Tarot for December 26th, 2016: Princess of Wands, reversed

Today’s Tarot card is the Princess of Wands, reversed.

The Princess of Wands is the practical side of spirit and action and creativity.  She is courage applied, taking the tiger by the tail and dancing in the sacrificial fire that would consume someone of lesser mettle.  She leaps forward and forcefully liberates herself from the fearful habits that had previously held her back, a living embodiment of Uranus’ current transit of Aries.

The Princess is associated with Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth who demanded virginal purity of her priestesses.  In astrology, the asteroid Vesta shows where our focus is when we are not sexually active, and she also shows what we hold sacred.  The sacred fire of spirit and creative action within us is both the spark of life that animates us and a guiding beacon to others.  When we withhold it or stifle it we feel diminished, depleted, and less visible, and those around us who were previously guided by that light are hindered by its absence, whether or not they are conscious of the reason why.

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” – Anais Nin

Reversed, the Princess’ courage is withheld, and with it her vitality.  The logical question becomes “why are we holding back?”  Now is the time for us to examine our fears and let them be burned away in the fires of consciousness.

Keep in mind that the Princess in her upright state is a force of nature, an avatar of unbridled passion, true to herself and unconcerned with permanence.  She is eternally living in the moment.  And this state of freedom and impermanence can be frightening in a world that defines us by material possessions and social standing.  The Princess is completely at home in the change that is the true constant of the Universe, and that is a difficult state of being for those of us striving to live by the rules and the expectations of our society.  Especially when the Universe is throwing us extra doses of instability, we may struggle to hold on to some form of structure, even if it is a form that is damaging to us.  Today’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition has thrown this struggle into sharp focus, and the Princess appearing here reversed suggests that some vital part of us may be losing this battle.  Now is the time to take a deep breath with which to feed our inner fire, and recognize that the social harmony and the structures of the status quo that we feel so much pressure to preserve are not served by the deaths of our spirits.

Astrology of December 26th, 2016: Balancing Disruption

The Moon entered adventurous Sagittarius last night after a long void-of-course period in Scorpio, and this morning it stirred things up with a square to Mars in Pisces.  The Moon in Sagittarius is instinctually freedom-loving and social, bold and idealistic, and unlike the Moon in Scorpio this Moon makes us inclined to speak up!  Therefore, when it clashes with Mars, which governs our aggression and drive even in normally gentle Pisces, there are likely to be some fireworks, so chances are that the morning got off to a bit of a rocky start, encouraging a tendency toward impatience and even intolerance, and tempers flaring as a result.

This is followed by the astrological aspect grabbing the most attention today, as Jupiter in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries augurs BIG and sudden changes!  This may exacerbate the sore tempers resulting from this morning’s Moon/Mars fracas, as Jupiter magnifies whatever he touches from his vantage point in cool-but-social Libra, and Uranus in Aries is a live-wire that adds electricity to the situation, along with an aggressive drive toward change.  Since oppositions create a challenge between two bodies that heightens their awareness of each other, there can be a struggle between individualism and the desire for social harmony.  We can feel torn between what will keep the peace and what will make our own lives better.  With all of the struggles we’ve experienced over 2016, beginning its last week with this aspect is likely to end the year with a bang, and not necessarily for the better.  At the very least, there is a heightened feeling of agitation, a need to make things happen, and though change is vital this feeling may well make us go off half-cocked, so it is really crucial right now that we use the reviewing and reconsidering power of Mercury retrograde to hold ourselves in check long enough to determine if the change we are undertaking is indeed the change we want, and be sure that it balances our individual needs with those of our relationships and our society.

Speaking of relationships, those are likely to feel unstable right now – there may be more than a few break-ups before the end of the year as a result of this influence.  Being aware of the powers behind this restlessness and actively aligning ourselves with the will to balance individual and relationship with compassion for each other is the best way for couples to survive this disruptive force.  Since this is an aspect between slow-moving planets, we’ve been building up to this over the holiday weekend and even a while before that, and its influence will continue to be felt through New Year’s Day and beyond.  Today is simply the day when that urgent energy comes to a head, so we need to breathe through this and harness what we can of it for creating positive changes in our lives rather than unnecessary destruction.

Of course, the Moon in Sagittarius (which Jupiter rules) doesn’t make things any easier this afternoon when it squares Neptune in Pisces.  Neptune governs hopes and dreams but it also governs illusions, delusions, confusion, and outright deception.  This makes the Mercury retrograde capacity for slowly rethinking things really crucial, as it is likely that even seemingly simple decisions are going to need a second look in order to keep from being tripped up by a wild urge toward change crashing through foggy instincts and confused emotions.

The evening may see some slight soothing of the chaos via a gently harmonious sextile between Mercury in Capricorn and Neptune in Pisces.  This is a time when Mercury retrograde is actually our friend, if we embrace it as such.  After all of the confusion and disruption of the day, the steady practical influence of a Capricorn Mercury on our minds can help us sort through the mess, even going backwards through the retrograde, by reviewing our situation and forcing us to reconsider our previous thoughts and actions.  Mercury in Capricorn is prone to deep thinking and weighing all sides, and in a supportive relationship with Neptune may be the voice of reason speaking through the fog, helping us to steer our course back out of illusion and destruction and into a more compassionate vision of reality.
