Astrology of January 31st, 2017: Courage and Decisiveness

The day starts immediately with the Moon in Pisces conjunct Chiron shortly after the witching hour, heightening our sensitivity to our hurts and limitations, whether physical or otherwise.  If we weren’t in bed yet at that time, chances are that we would feel the need for rest and healing strongly at that point, but that awareness of hurt might well keep us awake longer, as Chiron seeks to instruct us through what we are feeling.

A few hours later the Moon squares Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially leading to a depressive early morning, as the challenge from Saturn to our emotions is one of making us feel our limitations and fears and insecurities keenly right now, and following on the heels of the Moon/Chiron conjunction it might be a little rough to take.  On the other hand, we may well find ourselves struggling to feel at that point, as Saturn’s restriction can deaden feelings, especially those already stretched thin and exhausted by the past week of turmoil in the larger world, and the difficulty in maintaining empathy when it seems that battle lines are being drawn between “us” and “them.”

Thankfully, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Pisces later in the morning, and our feelings and instincts become aligned with our affections and pleasures.  We become aware of the sweetness of who and what we value, take comfort in our emotional, physical, and social connections, our sense of the universal and the humanity that brings us together and regenerates the sympathy and empathy between us.

This begins a void-of-course period lasting a few hours, during which the Moon trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, keeping our emotions and instincts attuned to and in harmony with the rejected and marginalized in ourselves and our society.  This mid-day and early afternoon period is a time when we will strongly identify with the underdog on an unconscious level, which is also a collective level.  There is also an instinctual awareness of secrets, and we are likely to be good at obscuring what we feel at this time, even as we sense hidden things under the surface that intensify our own feelings and that of those with whom we are connected.

The Moon enters Aries this afternoon, and the feelings and instincts that were so quiet and sensitive now get an influx of fire.  That secretive and secret-sensing unconscious now wants to get straight to the truth of things, boldly and without hesitation, and is likely to step on some toes in the process.  This is a time to exercise our bravery, to quest for answers and battle monsters along the way, and decisively create solutions in the parts of our lives most in need of them.  And the Universe is going to be kind enough to give us the energy and drive to do it, with Mars conjuncting the Moon in Aries this evening.  All of that fire that has set our hearts ablaze has the classical ruler of Aries, Mars directing it, channeling that spirit and focusing our instincts straight toward whatever demons we need to fight as a result of the introspection of the day.

Close on the heels of Mars charging forward tonight is Mercury in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries.  Our words that seek to be the voice of deep and reasoned thought in pursuit of our goals run afoul of the Great Rebel, the urge toward newness and upheaval, challenging and even tearing down the old in service to the future.  We may find ourselves speaking before we have fully thought things through, or our words may prove to be far more disruptive than we intended.  Our minds may run at a million miles a minute, our attention spans grow smaller, our focused energy and emotion racing to keep up with the pace set by changing circumstances.  We may see unusual trading activity starting this afternoon as a precursor to the exact square this evening, as even the swift Mercury’s contact lasts longer than that of the Moon, and will be felt into tomorrow.  Remember that in addition to governing communication and thought, Mercury is also a god of commerce and financial gain, and luck.  Mercury conjuncting Uranus has our luck turning on a dime, so we need to be prepared for wherever our Moon/Mars conjunction boldness leads us to put up some surprises of its own, and use those Aries instincts and energy decisively.

Astrology of January 30th, 2017: Escape or Transform?

Today starts shrouded in Neptunian fog, thanks to a Moon/Neptune conjunction in Pisces in the early morning hours.  Neptune governs our hopes, dreams, illusions, and delusions, spiritual perception and the ways in which we seek to escape reality.  Since Neptune is the transcendental ruler of Pisces, Neptunian energy is being reinforced both by its transit through that sign and by the conjunction with the Moon in Pisces, and since transcendental planets alter whatever they touch from the ground up, our emotions and instincts this morning are being reconfigured by all of the ways in which we seek escape or alteration of reality.  True spiritual growth requires that we confront these areas of escapism, and recognize that what we hear right now may only be what we want to hear.  Pisces heightens sensitivity, making our feelings more vulnerable to both our perceptions and our escapist tendencies, and in particular we may be prey to deception at this time.  While this is a Lunar aspect and therefore fleeting, the absence of additional aspects until the late afternoon makes this influence more likely to linger without being redirected by other forces, and since it can blur both perceptions and instincts, it would be a good idea to be extra careful on the road this morning or when operating heavy machinery.

This afternoon sees the Moon in Pisces sextiling Pluto in Capricorn, bringing forward the residual influence of yesterday’s Mercury/Pluto conjunction, softened by the gentle feeling of the Moon in Pisces.  This is a harmonious aspect, which is just as well given the innate emotional intensity of Pluto in aspect with the Moon.  In this case, our sense of power and control in relation to our goals supports and is supported by our sensitive emotions and instincts.  We may find ourselves experiencing a greater degree of flow in relation to our goals and how we feel about them, and may find it easier to follow our instincts at this time as a result, especially if our goals align with our spiritual directions.

The Moon sextiling Mercury in Capricorn tonight also continues yesterday’s combination of Mercury/Pluto energies and this afternoon’s Moon/Pluto connection, but with more thinking and communicating involved.  This supportive aspect helps us to express what we are feeling, and to apply our instincts and emotional understanding to what we are thinking and saying.  As a result, we have an opportunity over the course of this day and night to come to a greater understanding of what we feel and how those feelings guide our actions and communication in pursuit of our goals.  With Pisces emphasizing connectivity, it is likely that this opportunity is enhanced if we allow ourselves to share our insights and experiences with others tonight, so long as we are willing to give everyone their fair turn to speak their truth.  Pisces is universal and spiritual in its orientation so now is a time when real connections will create greater flow on our paths to wholeness and in the necessary transformations along the way.

Astrology of January 29th, 2017: Universal Transformation

The day started with the Moon in Aquarius void-of-course for several hours.  During this time the Moon in Aquarius squared Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, putting our instincts and emotions at odds with hard-won wisdom, revealing secrets and stirring up a will toward rebellion born from a sense of rejection, which is likely to simmer for a while under the void-of-course influence.  In particular, this may put our emotions in a space of uncomfortable confrontation with the marginalized elements of society and our own psyches.  The parts of us that we wish to deny weren’t interested in staying safely hidden out of view, and this is likely to colour our actions moving into the rest of the day.

The Moon entered Pisces mid-morning, moving us out of the more rational space of Aquarius and into greater emotional sensitivity, intuitive instincts, and a feeling of greater connection (or desire for connection) with humanity and the universe as a whole.  We may find our emotions flowing more freely at this time, and more inclined to go in multiple directions at once, and at the same time we may feel a sense of age and even exhaustion, as though we have felt this all before and now wish to resolve and conclude certain feelings rather than continuing to go around in circles with them.

The big astrological news of today is this afternoon’s conjunction between Mercury and Pluto in Capricorn.  Our minds and communication are most concerned now with issues of power, institutions, systems of control, death, and revolution.  We are not likely to be interested in surfaces or frivolous things now, preferring to delve down into the deeper workings of the structures in our lives, and if necessary tear down what isn’t serving us well.  Our goals are likely to get a serious boost of transformative power today, as our minds are operating with intensity and consumed with the larger cycles and transpersonal forces at work in our lives.  Mercury is a trickster god, amoral and at his best when playing with a myriad of elements, and when he plays with giant forces such as these, what is unleashed may well be radically different from what we expect.  He is also a hermaphroditic god, so matters pertaining to gender non-binary folks may well be highlighted, whether drawing power from larger systems or clashing with powers brought to bear against them.  It should be remembered that whatever a transcendental planet such as Pluto touches is likely to be transformed by the experience from the ground up, so our thoughts are not likely to remain comfortable during this process, nor will our minds remain unchanged.

Whatever we experience in connection with the Mercury/Pluto conjunction this afternoon, it is tied to our karmic path, and in particular is likely to deal with past-life issues in need of resolution, as the Moon conjuncts the South Node.  Thus, this day combines heightening our emotional and instinctual awareness of the marginalized in our lives through this morning’s Moon/Black Moon Lilith square with increasing emotional sensitivity and universal awareness due to the Moon’s entry into Pisces, and the Mercury/Pluto conjunction colours the entire day in intense thought and communication surrounding our goals and material structures, systems, and institutions with the Pisces Moon conjuncting the South Node creating one giant impetus to purge the outdated systems of the past that hold us back.  In particular, now is a time for us to reject our own victimization and martyrdom, and move forward with purpose and understanding of our own innate power that cannot be torn from us no matter how dire our circumstances.  This is not a day for remaining complacent, whatever else it may be.

Astrology of January 28th, 2017: A Higher Cause

Today’s astrological weather takes an upturn, with the Moon in Aquarius making three supportive aspects in the afternoon and evening, and no other notable aspects occurring to disrupt them.  What’s more, all three of these lunar aspects supportively highlight the planets involved in the ongoing Triangle of Potential between Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn, helping us in working through some of the lessons of that configuration in the least painful manner possible.

The morning and early afternoon are quiet in terms of aspects, though the energetic boost to new undertakings from yesterday’s New Moon is still likely to be felt, especially in areas related to social causes, technology, education, and futurism.  Aquarius being inclined to favor the rational over the emotional makes us likely to express what we are feeling in terms of how we think we are feeling rather than getting down in the thick of the actual emotion, which may be just as well given the emotional intensity of a week spent by so many of us waking up in dread of what the daily news will reveal.

This afternoon begins the trio of alignments supporting the Triangle of Potential with the Moon in Aquarius sextiling Uranus in Aries.  This can give our rebellious instincts a boost, and sends us seeking out the new and unusual whether we do so mindfully or not.  Uranus energies can feel disruptive for those of us who don’t normally get enough newness and experimentation in our lives or for those of us who are feeling trapped by our situations.  Luckily this is a sextile, so the contact between the Moon and Uranus here is gentle and harmonious, giving us some curiosity and impetus forward at a pace that we can handle.  Plus, the Aquarian side of the equation enjoys the contact with its transcendental ruler Uranus, and the Aries fire that Uranus currently resides in gets a boost of fuel to its individualist tendencies as a result of mental oxygenation by Aquarian ideas.  All in all, it’s an enlivening pairing.

The energy and excitement that can be generated by the Moon/Uranus pairing gets an outlet tonight when the Moon in Aquarius turns its attention to Jupiter, trining with the Greater Benefic and promoting ease and flow between our knee-jerk reactions and our desire for social harmony.  We will feel instinctively drawn to social situations and feel the need to interact with those with whom we can make progress on the causes and ideals that matter most to us.  We will be more willing to consider the ideas of others, more interested in mediating and working with others toward solutions, and more inclined to seek partnerships that help both our society and us as individuals to evolve.  And if all goes according to cosmic plan those partnerships are the result of the drive toward newness that we felt this afternoon, so that whatever we are planning now doesn’t keep us stuck in the same old rut, nor allowing Jupiter’s magnification of the desire for social harmony to keep us from exploring the new possibilities that pioneering Uranus in Aries has revealed to our Aquarian hearts.

The Moon sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius toward the witching hour gives us the discipline that we need to tie all of this together, aligning Aquarian social instincts with a clear understanding of our limitations and boundaries.  Saturn tends to lend a serious note to whatever he influences, so our socially-conscious instincts are not likely to go off half-cocked under this aspect, nor are our intentions frivolous.  This is a good aspect for carefully exploring our limits and seeing what we actually can and can’t do to improve our situation and that of others in our social circles.  Tonight’s journey of the Moon in relationship with the Triangle of Potential gives us an instinctual framework for using our discipline and hard-won experience to master the balancing act between the Uranian desire for change and Jupiter’s desire to keep the faith.  Tonight our social networks and partnerships can be the perfect vehicle for using our individual gifts toward a higher cause.

Tarot for January 27th, 2017: Defeat

Today’s Tarot card is the 5 of Swords (Defeat).

The fives in the Minor Arcana of Tarot represent the trials of humanity, stumbling points that we need to work through as part of the self-teaching process of the Major Arcana (V) The Hierophant.  We saw the 5 of Wands (Strife) yesterday.  Seeing the 5 of Swords (Defeat) today suggests that this is part of a pattern, and that we are in a time when we need to burn through a lot of karma in order to get unstuck and progress.

The Swords are the suit of elemental air, invoking reason, communication, and all mental processes.  The 5 of Swords is ruled by Venus in Aquarius.  This is something of an uncomfortable place for Venus.  On one hand, Aquarius is socially-minded and friendly.  On the other hand, Aquarius is often more interested in many people than one, more inclined to be drawn to groups than to individuals, and as an air sign is more comfortable with thoughts than feelings.  Venus wants affection, pleasure, creature comforts.  Aquarius will happily sacrifice all of those in the name of the greater good.  Venus in this space then becomes thwarted by subverting the needs of the one to the needs of the many.

Venus governs what we value, and her placement here is ultimately concerned with what is the value of the individual to the group.  Aquarius is very concerned with the evolution of the individual as a means toward the evolution of humanity as a whole.  The danger comes when, in the quest to meet the needs of the group, we ignore or deny the needs of the individual.  Aquarius is distinctly prone to becoming a victim of group-think.  It should be noted that while social clubs and many worthy political causes are Aquarian institutions, so was the Third Reich.  The group is not always right, yet because of our Venusian need for affection and connection, all too often we go along to get along, allowing that need for connection to connect us to very poisonous attitudes.  And when we value what the group thinks more than our own feelings, we set ourselves up for a fall.

It is notable that so many modern astrologers consider Aquarius to be a sign of the individual, the rebel, in large part because they view Uranus as the modern-day ruler of Aquarius and have discarded the classical rulership of Aquarius by Saturn.  Yet Aquarius is still the sign that rules the 11th house, the house of friendships and causes and group relations.  Aquarius is the sign that governs the social order, and order is within the realm of Saturn.  Yes, Aquarius is concerned with the future (Uranus), but what society worth continuing isn’t?  Aquarius comes at the end of January, named for the two-headed Roman god Janus looking both backward and forward, appropriate for a sign ruled by Saturn in the past and Uranus in the future.  This dynamic plays out in the 5 of Swords with negative thought patterns that we’ve internalized in the 5 of Swords keeping us trapped in the past, resenting our defeats and despairing for the future.

The Thoth deck version of this card shows the fallen petals of the rose of love and wisdom that has been torn apart by the five swords, forming the downward-pointing pentagram that symbolizes the ascendancy of matter over spirit.  The mind here is not a stabilizing force, the well-being of the group at the expense of the individual’s spirit is confining and destructive, and the classical Saturnine rulership of Aquarius asserts itself with depressive force.  The 5 of Swords gives us the opportunity to recognize this dynamic and learn from our defeats rather than simply railing against fate.  Instead of dividing our minds between what we think and all of the internalized beliefs we have absorbed from others around us, it is time to cut away the excess mental chatter that our affection for our social structure has saddled us with.  Rather than passively accepting our lot and becoming weaker for it, we need to stop wallowing in the past and in the sensations brought about by group fears, sensations that have hijacked our wills.  We need to stop fighting old battles, recognize that we are feeding our own defeat, and seek a new direction.
