Tarot for February 20th, 2017: Indolence

Today’s Tarot card is the 8 of Cups (Indolence).

The 8 of Cups is ruled by Saturn in Pisces.  Saturn is currently in Sagittarius, where the Moon is also today and from where the Moon squared Chiron in Pisces this afternoon.  Like Saturn, Chiron shows our limitations within a sign, albeit on a more injurious level than Saturn.  In Pisces, these limitations are on the spiritual level, affecting our ability to perceive connections with others or patterns that are larger than ourselves and our immediate contacts, and also impacting our emotional sensitivity and compassion.  We may feel trapped by the larger forces in our lives, unable to see a way through because the energy of change in this situation is blocked.

Unlike Chiron, however, Saturn shows a situation where our fears and insecurities create the greater portion of our limitations.  Yes, life can be difficult and we can find ourselves bumping up against factors that seem to limit our capabilities, but ultimately those limitations are fed by what we fear might be true rather than what actually is true.  Saturn has a depressive quality, and we may find ourselves wallowing in it lately, surrendering to feelings of martyrdom and hopelessness.

The Thoth deck’s version of this card shows the water flow of the cups has slowed to a trickle, with the majority of the cups empty, the pool beneath still and brackish.  Lacking sensitivity, connection, and compassion, our emotions have become stagnant.  Exhaustion and apathy reign over all.  Living in the past keeps our lives dead to the present.

The 8 of Cups shows us a stagnant situation that we must leave behind.  It is time for us to move forward, leaving the past and opening ourselves up to change.

Astrology of February 20th, 2017: The Speed of Thought

The Moon in Sagittarius sextiled Mercury in Aquarius in the early morning hours today, giving some fire to our thoughts and some intelligent fuel to our emotions, and aligning both to social realms that speak to our higher ideals.  This made us likely to be independent in our attitudes and instinctive responses, even while being mindful of the greater picture, and while not likely to have been cold and detached, we probably weren’t too interested in getting cozy either.  Our friendliness this morning has been in service to our values, our thoughts and communication tied to our ideals and vision.

A couple of hours later the Moon in Sagittarius trined Uranus in Aries, heightening the Aquarian influence previously set into motion by the Moon/Mercury sextile, causing things to speed up.  Uranus governs sudden change, and as the Moon governs our unconscious reactions under this influence tend to be quicker, changing our responses on a dime and in some cases going in very uncharacteristic directions.  Of course, this gave a great boost to those of us in situations that benefit from lightness on one’s feet.  Our moods may have been fluctuating rapidly this morning, but since the trine is the most supportive of aspects, that is likely to have been beneficial in adapting to changing circumstances, giving us a chance to understand and even make friends with the upheaval in our lives.

A couple of hours later (still morning!) the Moon in Sagittarius sextiled Jupiter in Libra, expanding upon whatever we have been feeling, so if the Moon/Uranus trine got us revved up, the addition of Jupiter into the mix may have us positively bouncing off the walls.  The Moon/Jupiter sextile also reinforces the social feelings of the earlier Moon/Mercury sextile, and in combination with the Moon/Uranus trine continues the ongoing theme of the Triangle of Potential of the past couple of months, with the Moon standing in for Saturn this morning (no worries – Saturn will get back into the game tonight!).  Now our emotions are acting as the mediator in the ongoing struggle for balance between Uranus in Aries’ headstrong rebellion and need for independence versus Jupiter in Libra’s magnification of relationship and social issues and desire for peace at all costs.  How we feel and respond instinctively today can give us clues in how to navigate the larger issues of this Jupiter/Uranus aspect that are continuing until mid-March and then will revisit us in late September and early October.  Remember that aspects between these slow-moving outer planet affect the whole world on a generational scale, and while we all have our individual interactions with and reactions to such aspects, we are caught up in the larger pattern as a society well as the personal iterations of it.  Since the Moon in Sagittarius heightens our faith and optimism, today we may find ourselves applying that feeling to our larger life patterns and experiences in order to mitigate the upheaval being caused by social and global forces.

Toward mid-day we may find ourselves having to really put the Moon’s Sagittarian optimism to use as the Moon squares Chiron in Pisces and we are confronted with universal pain on a personal level.  We may find ourselves challenged to meet the suffering of the world and still keep our own heads up, and may wind up helping others to our own detriment, or may find that failing to do so has profound consequences.  This is a time to be careful to tread the line between compassionate service and martyrdom.  Conversely, we may find our ability to care severely damaged in ways that challenge our ideals, and may have difficulty being sympathetic enough to respond appropriately to those around us.  This is a rough aspect for people in service industries especially.  Regardless of how it manifests, it will be hard to be comfortable with what we experience at this time, and our emotional reactions may tend toward the frustrated or even angry or despairing as a result.

This afternoon, the Moon conjuncts Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially adding to the gloom-and-doom that can be inspired by a Moon/Chiron square.  Saturn tend to inspire seriousness in everything he touches, and in this case he’s touching feeling and instincts that have just had a rough patch after this morning’s exhilarating ride.  If we use this aspect well, we may find ourselves digging into routine and process at this time in order to reassure ourselves and feel some stability, and since the Moon also turns void-of-course at this time, routine is what we most need to focus on rather than starting anything bold and new.  The void-of-course period doesn’t favor particularly clear thinking either, especially with Saturn tending to darken our emotions and potentially our perspective, but we can still mine some useful insights out of this time, and Saturn’s influence can give us the discipline to make good use of our instincts now.

This especially true since the big news of the night is Mercury in Aquarius sextiling Uranus in Aries, which may have kept some of the frenetic feeling of this morning in motion throughout the day.  Our thoughts are likely to run faster today, and quicken even more as evening approaches, even as our emotions start to float through the void-of-course period.  The Mercury/Uranus sextile increases our capacity for thinking out of the box, and we may find unusual solutions to problems affecting our social groups and causes during this time.  We may also find ourselves communicating in a more rebellious fashion at this time, which we would do well to be mindful of if we find ourselves in positions relative to authority figures.  Those of us with any gift for oratory, whether previously known or not, may well just find it sparked tonight in service of something revolutionary, and since Uranus governs technology some of us may do our best communicating  during this time via the Internet.

Late tonight the Moon enters dedicated Capricorn, aligning our emotions with our goals and reputations, as well as our livelihoods.  This makes it especially worthwhile to utilize the Mercury/Uranus sextile’s heightened capacity for communication via technology in service to our goals and our careers, and with Mercury in Aquarius’ mindfulness regarding our function in the social order, the Moon in Capricorn’s awareness of social hierarchies may be especially useful in tandem with our interactions now.  Capricornian seriousness calls to mind whatever feelings we experienced under Saturn’s influence earlier, as Capricorn is ruled by Saturn.  Since Saturn is also the classical ruler of Aquarius, there is a continuing thread between our feelings and our mind here, even as Mercury aspects the rebel Uranus, and that Saturnine influence may prove to be the stabilizing force that allows us to make the best use of the Mercury/Uranus sextile throughout the afternoon and evening.  Keep in mind that Capricorn excels in seeing opportunity, even in difficult situations, so our seriousness during the latter portion of the day is likely to be beneficial, and the Capricorn Moon can give our emotions some focus to keep us steady in the midst of whatever turmoil our hyperactive minds can cook up.

All aspect times used in creating this post are calculated for Pacific Standard Time.  I tend to speak in broad terms when I reference time on this blog, referring to time-frames like “morning” or “afternoon” rather than specific times, since I still have a lot of friends on the East Coast who read these posts and I’d like them to be pertinent to those friends as well as folks here on the West Coast.  Readers from further abroad will need to adjust time-frames accordingly.
