Astrology Update, January 24th-25th, 2018, In the Wake of the 1st Quarter Moon

“Today’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus sees the first challenge in this lunar cycle to the intentions we set at last week’s New Moon in Capricorn and have been building on since….”

I started to write about last night’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus and stopped. I’d been struggling with writer’s block all day and into the night, not simply at a loss for words, but rather feeling the need to work with the energies of this moon phase through visual art instead of writing. Or at least find some balance between the two, to find the path of least resistance in working with the inherent challenge of the First Quarter Moon’s square between the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Taurus, two fixed signs who each have no interest in moving to accommodate the other.

To successfully navigate this kind of challenge we need to really feel it, not just emotionally, but kinaesthetically, as a voraciously thinking and socially attuned Solar Consciousness just bumped up against our instinctive desire to take pleasure in the physical world. In a society which has long valued mind over matter and upheld the supremacy of the soul over the body, the visual over the tactile, coming to a real place of understanding between the two is no small feat.

Why does it say “avowed hedonist” toward the end of the self-description in my header on Twitter? Because I believe that we should enjoy our lives enthusiastically and unashamedly or not at all. Ourselves, just as we are. We all have our little indulgences, material or otherwise. And the “otherwise” is heightened now with Mercury conjuncting Pluto reviving the last reverberations of Pluto’s waxing square to Uranus that has caused so much societal and personal disruption in recent years.  Mercury’s conjunction to Pluto eeking out the last bit of growth potential from that Pluto/Uranus square has heightened the potential for challenging sudden changes in thought or speech at a time when our obsessions and compulsions are exerting a powerful influence on our minds.  As Mercury sextiles Jupiter today and moves forward toward the exact square to Uranus this upcoming Sunday, plus with Jupiter’s recent sextile to Pluto still in effect, we are likely to find these mental changes and unusual conversations more and more challenging, confronted with ideas that may seem too radical in the context of the status quo, yet we also have an increased capacity to make use of the transformative power of Pluto’s influence, to gain greater awareness of our own subconscious motivations and come to a greater sense of wholeness in the process, if we are willing to face the parts of ourselves we have not previously recognized.

Both the classical and modern rulers of Aquarius have coloured our thoughts and feelings over the past 24 hours, with Saturn in Capricorn trine the Moon in Taurus at the time of the First Quarter Moon, increasing the strength of our emotions yesterday, and we have felt these over the course of the night in our bones, slowly, steadily, the daily processes of our experiences informing our psyches, rippling both outward and inward. Saturn is all about process, all about slow and steady progress over time, and very much about the body – working within the limitations of the physical form, but also grounding ourselves and our feelings at a time when the forward-thinking consciousness of the Sun in Aquarius might easily send us too far out into space, too far into our future and not mindful enough of the present.

Drawing for me is a very embodied process – more than one person who knows me and my artwork has commented on the clear connection between my drawings and my dancing, as there is always a sense of movement within my best work. The drawing that is a part of this post is by no means a completed drawing, but rather a continuation of a glorified doodle that I started a while back and hadn’t initially intended to do much else with. And I will probably end up painting over it at some later date. But for the moment, it is a good reminder of the need to be patient with the process in this lunar cycle and in this coming year, to be mindful of our bodies as we pursue our minds’ goals and our social causes, and to give ourselves recognition for the progress we are making while recognizing that we still have a long way to go. The journey may be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be painful.

All aspect times used in creating this post are calculated for Pacific Standard Time. I tend to speak in broad terms when I reference time on this blog, referring to time-frames like “morning” or “afternoon” rather than specific times, since I still have a lot of friends on the East Coast who read these posts and I’d like them to be pertinent to those friends as well as folks here on the West Coast. Readers from further abroad will need to adjust time-frames accordingly.

Please keep in mind that we all have different responses to the aspects of the day because we all have different natal and progressed charts with which these aspects interact. If you would like to know more about your own natal and progressed charts in order to better understand how the aspects of the day will affect you, please take a look at my astrological services, and let’s get started on helping you to understand your life better! The threads of fate can only be adjusted when we start from a place of deep self-knowing.

Art and Upcoming Appearances

March 27th 2016

I’ve got new Patrons-only content up on Patreon now.  Now that I’m moving away from daily divinatory drawings specific to each day, I’m starting to tackle the HUGE backlog of unfinished creative projects in need of my attention.  I’ll be posting updates on the progress for many of these on Patreon, with finished work posted there first and then posted here.  I am also hoping to get a Twitch creative stream going sometime in the New Year to give people more insight into my creative process while also discussing a lot of the esoteric subjects that fuel it.

Speaking of esoteric subjects, I will be doing Tarot readings this Sunday at the Metaphysical Market at Spooked in Seattle in Pioneer Square.  I have also just recently confirmed appearances as a Tarot reader for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Full Moon Celebration in January as well as the CoSM Full Moon events for April, July, and October.

Finally, I’ve added another modified divinatory drawing to the designs and products I have available on Redbubble.  My progress on getting these added has been a bit slower than I’d like, mostly because the process of editing and placing images is much more time-consuming than I’d originally expected.  However, now that I’m starting to get adjusted to life here on the West Coast I am hoping that my additions there will be a bit more consistent.  I’ve added more of the backlog of divinatory drawing scans to the gallery here, including the unfortunate leonine version of Grumpy Cat, and the drawing at the top of this post (that I think I have not previously posted anywhere) which is from March 27th, 2016 and which I just randomly discovered while flipping through a stack of what I had thought were unfinished drawings…  (Clearly I need a new filing system.)

What’s next?  I’ve got a new Magic: The Gathering card alteration on the way, have just finished another Two Doctors scarf (this one’s a commission, so not for sale!), and have been working on a new design in eyelet silk lace – slippery and time-consuming, but it’s finally starting to shape up.  I’ll be posting more photos and scans as they become available!

Art, Astrology, and Tarot for the New Moon, November 29th, 2016

My newest divinatory drawing and astrological analysis of today’s Sagittarius New Moon is now up on Patreon.

Today’s Tarot card is the 6 of Wands (Victory), an auspicious card to pull in view of this New Moon’s emphasis on choice.

The 6 of Wands is a numerical marriage of two threes, body and mind connected and ignited by spirit, twice.  It is ruled by Jupiter in Leo, and given Jupiter’s current placement in Libra this card is currently elementally harmonious with the Sagittarian New Moon’s sextiles to both Jupiter in Libra and Mars in Aquarius.  Jupiter is the Greater Benefic of classical astrology, governing faith and luck, and expanding whatever it touches.  In Libra, Jupiter expands our focus on social harmony, and in Leo, Jupiter expands our focus on self-expression.  In the 6 of Wands, that expansion leads to Victory, with our luck manifesting best when we display Leo’s expressiveness, courage, and generosity of spirit.  Combining the energies of the 6 of Wands with the energies of today’s New Moon in idealistic Sagittarius, we can feel that the choice before us and the resultant turning point in our lives asks that we be willing to courageously express our true ideas with generosity and faith.

We each have the capacity to ignite our inner fire and use it to fuel us through the winter ahead.  Jupiter in airy Libra gives immense fuel to both the fiery New Moon and this fiery Jupiter in Leo vision, and if we take the time in the midst of the day’s confusion to brave the uncertainty and float in our subconscious for a bit longer, that vision can lead to our victory, should we choose it.

Art, Astrology, and Tarot for November 27th, 2016

Today’s daily divinatory drawing and astrological commentary are now up on Patreon.

Today’s Tarot card is the 3 of Swords (Sorrow), reversed.

This card is a bit like a trick question.  Typically, we think of sorrow as an emotion.  But in Tarot, emotions are represented by the Cups, a water suit, not the Swords, which are associated with air and mental processes.  Reason and logic are governed by the Swords, not those messy emotions, right?  So why is Sorrow the realm of the 3 of Swords?

The 3 of Swords shows the action of Saturn, the Lord of Karma, on the portion of the mind governed by Libra, a cardinal (initiatory) air sign concerned with balance, harmony, and relationships.  Libra is the quintessential peacemaker, ruled by Venus, who governs our pleasures and our affections, but more importantly our values.  Libra values peace and relationships above all else.  Libra’s state of balance and harmony can be thrown off by the slightest hint of discord, and for many Librans, the need for harmony becomes so great that they will forego meeting their own needs in order to keep the peace.  Of course, this rarely works out as they intended, as discord swept under the rug remains discord just the same.

Enter Saturn into the picture.  Saturn is notorious for tough love, showing us our limitations and just why our carefully laid plans are likely to come to naught.  Where Saturn appears, we struggle with fears, inhibitions, insecurities.  We are certain we are not up to the task of whatever sign or house he appears in, and only serious persistence and discipline will prove otherwise.  In Libra, Saturn brings to light our fears of conflict, our fears of our own social shortcomings, and our fears of relationship.  Libra is the sign most likely to get married (and also the sign most likely to get divorced), and rules the 7th house of socially significant relationships (spouses, business partnerships, open enemies).  When Saturn looms over the 7th house, we fear connection and all of the messy dynamics that come with it.  And if we allow that fear to rule our perceptions, we will hold connections and relationships at bay rather than take the risk of being awkward and vulnerable.

In the 3 of Swords, we see three swords pointing into the center of the rose of love, tearing it apart.  Dark clouds of confusion swirl all around.  The mind frets and worries under Saturn’s stern gaze, and in the process destroys the possibility of feeling love and connection.  This is why sorrow falls under the auspices of the Swords and within the realm of the mind; the emotion of sorrow is seen here as the result of destructive mental processes.

The 3 of Swords appearing here reversed gives us hope for a better outcome.  As mentioned in today’s Patreon post, the Moon in Scorpio makes a series of aspects today that beckon the subconscious to explore powerful emotions as a means to transformation in regard to relationships.  And with the day ending in a long void-of-course period, now is the time to get clear on what Saturnine limitations you want to let go of in order to experience real connection.  By harnessing the void-of-course period’s tendency to negate, you have the potential to clear away the 3 of Swords’ doubt, fear, and sorrow, and once that void-of-course is over and the Moon enters idealistic, hopeful Sagittarius tomorrow afternoon, plant the rose of love anew.

Art, Astrology, and Tarot for November 25th, 2016

Today’s daily divinatory drawing and astrological commentary are now up on Patreon.

Today’s Tarot card is (IX) The Hermit.  An interesting card to come up, given the Venusian tone of today.

The Hermit is ruled by Virgo, a mutable earth sign to trine both Venus and Pluto in the cardinal earth sign of Capricorn.  The association of Virgo and The Hermit with virginity lends a certain irony to the day’s intense Venus/Pluto sensuality, and perhaps a note of frustration with romantic endeavors.

The Hermit looks within to understand the truth of things, and takes time away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world in order to regenerate.  He carries his own light, the six-sided lantern of wisdom, and carefully examines all the details of whatever matter has caught his attention, patiently willing to dedicate himself to the process of learning and growth for as long as it takes.

The inclusion of the underworld guardian Cerberus is notable here in view of today’s Plutonian emphasis.  In this portrayal, Cerberus looks both backward and forward, and given Pluto’s tendency to underline control issues and power dynamics, The Hermit here may be calling on us to be mindful of past patterns and future potentials before running headlong into some enticing entanglement.
