Astrology Update, Full Moon, January 1st, 2018 (Wolf Moon): Drinking Desire

The upcoming Full Moon on January 1st is an emotional powerhouse, starting off the New Year with a deep exploration of where our feelings and our attractions vie for prominence in our relationships, with our deepest feelings and connections driving the actions that will make all the difference as we forge our karmic paths.

Full Moons are the culmination of energies and intentions set in motion at the preceding New Moon.  In this case, that would have been the December 18th, 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius, which was conjunct Saturn at 29 degrees, amplifying the emotional impact of the lessons of Saturn in Sagittarius over the past few years, just before Saturn’s entry into Capricorn the next day.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but Saturn’s presence emphasized the need to complete old business in order to start with the new, including the necessity of getting rid of what we no longer need, letting go of habits and relationships that no longer serve us.  This emphasis was amplified by the Winter Solstice following closely on the heels of that New Moon, with the Sun and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees Capricorn, a conjunction that last occurred in 1664, giving the Winter Solstice a fateful feeling that the newfound energy of practical manifestation stirred by Saturn’s entry into Capricorn would affect our paths not simply for that day or the upcoming year, but for centuries and lifetimes to come.

This Full Moon therefore is the emotional counterpoint to that fateful and achievement-oriented New Moon, putting what we are manifesting in our practical endeavors in the context of our feelings.  Saturn is about lengthy, laborious processes, and whatever we felt called to set in motion at the December New Moon and the Winter Solstice needs to be something that fills our hearts and souls completely, or we simply won’t be able to maintain the will to grind through all obstacles for however long it takes us to complete this task.  Saturn is also about karma, the physical and metaphysical reactions to what we think and do and say in this world.  There is a weight and portentousness to the goals we aspire to under Saturn’s guidance.  Do we really want to take the karmic risks that such goals entail without actually feeling deeply about them?   How do we feel about the legacies of our actions over the course of our lifetimes, and the lifetimes thereafter?

Since the Moon is in Cancer those endeavors must also be seen in the context of our families and communities.  It’s not enough to set big goals in the physical world, nor to have the Saturnine/Capricornian willingness to climb any mountain to achieve them; the goals we set need to stir our feelings deeply but they also need to enhance our sense of interpersonal connection, or they’re not really worth a damn.  How does what we are doing affect those we care about?  How does it affect the people who nurture us, even those within our neighborhoods and social circles whose choices nurture us without our knowing them?  And how do we feel about the ripples of consequence that our actions will have in the larger world?

The Full Moon opposing Venus puts an emphasis on relationships, with full, sentimental Cancerian emotions but also a practical, earthy approach by Venus; there will be a desire for security and sticking to familiar ground.  Wild, new relationships or over-stimulating surroundings are not favored by the Capricornian Venus, nor by the homebody Cancerian Moon, yet there is an amplification of sexual desire created by Venus’ sextile to Mars, who also trines the Moon as part of a Kite formation, so both our emotions and our need for physical affection are feeling the call to action now, and we may find ourselves driven to extremes by the Scorpionic Mars attempting to reconcile the disparity between the two.  The Moon/Venus opposition creates a challenge between our emotions and our style of relating and experiencing affection, and there is a very real possibility of misplaced affections, unwanted sexual attention, or unrequited love.  However, the Kite formation that this is a part of offers the keys to meeting this challenge, the cosmic and personal tools available for use in solving the problems it draws our attention to, and relationships that come under the spotlight now have a good potential to grow and be strengthened as a result.

Within the body of the Kite is a Grand Water Trine between the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter/Mars in Scorpio.  The Moon trine Neptune creates romantic devotion, though this may be based more on fantasy than reality.  There is a self-sacrificing quality to this devotion, a desire to immerse oneself in the beloved, whether that beloved is a person or a creative project or a spiritual path or a social cause.  Since the trine is a harmonious aspect, the Neptunian urge to dissolve boundaries is less likely to be damaging than with a hard aspect, but it can still make for some potentially unsettling experiences, especially on the subconscious level, and particularly sensitive souls may feel the need to hide away at home or in other safe, familiar surroundings.  Given that this Full Moon follows on the heels of New Year’s Eve revelry, there is a heightened likelihood that overindulgence on that night leads to the need to stay home the next day and nurse one’s hangover, whether physical or emotional…

Intuition is heightened by this trine, with Jupiter amplifying the intuitive connection between spiritual Neptune and the instinctive, emotional Moon, and giving us a sense of faith in the truth of what we feel.  Mars in the mix gives courage and the impetus to action, with the sextile from Mars to Venus intensifying sexual attraction, and since Mars is in Scorpio, one of the two signs he rules, his action under this Full Moon is focused, directed, potentially hidden, and on occasion even ruthless.  The conjunction with Jupiter encourages grand gestures with deep meaning and impact, not simply big, showy displays with no substance.  Mars in Scorpio is not interested in half-measures!

Jupiter trining Neptune not only amplifies intuition but also generosity toward those less fortunate than ourselves.  The downside of this is the potential to be taken for a ride by unscrupulous and deceptive types, emotional vampires and addicts seeking a fix, or authority figures abusing their power, rather than those who are truly deserving of our largesse.  On the upside is the powerful spiritual awareness created by this trine, an awareness that is not merely cerebral but instead opens our hearts to a larger feeling for humanity as a whole and our universal interconnectedness.  Given the Moon/Venus challenge on a personal level, this is a time when we may gain a heightened understanding of how the personal is political, and how the challenges we face one-on-one mirror the challenges we face as a species.  Thankfully, that Grand Water Trine in this kite gives us the emotional tools for meeting those challenges, so we may well gain keys to solving larger world problems from the lessons we learn in our personal relationships at this time.

The Jupiter/Mars conjunction squaring the North Node stimulates and amplifies action in relation to our karmic paths, further emphasizing the sense of fatefulness carrying forward from Saturn’s touch on the New Moon and coming into fullness now, and underscoring the mirroring action between our personal relationship experiences and our connections on a planetary and universal scale.  Whatever intensity and conflict we may experience at this time has the impetus to be resolved with love and compassion, and we are likely to feel the impact of that resolution for some time to come.

Astrology Update, April 10th, 2017: Full Moon in Libra

Today sees few notable astrological aspects, but that doesn’t mean that it’s quiet.  The Moon in Libra waits until late this afternoon/early evening to get things started with a conjunction to Jupiter retrograde.  Jupiter has a tendency to magnify whatever he touches, so our emotions are likely to feel bigger now, our instincts more grand, the activity of our unconscious broader in scope and more philosophical.  Our social urges may become more pronounced now, but still are likely to have some of the tentative, reconsidering quality of the retrograde, especially with so many other planets recently in retrograde and emphasized in the past few days.  Those of us in relationships may find ourselves more focused on them now, and those of us without may be more inclined to try to change that solitary state.  We may also feel more optimistic at this time, more inclined to be forgiving and generous, and inclined to gather with others.

That said, the recent Jupiter/Pluto square is still in effect, and the Moon in Libra sees fit to remind us of those tensions with a square to Pluto as the night progresses.  The already-broadened scope of our emotions gets a boost of intensity to amplify what we feel even more, and our knee-jerk reactions are likely to be intensified as well.  We may find our reactions far exceeding the scope of what we normally consider reasonable, and may be hard-pressed to explain why.  Pluto in contact with the Moon can increase obsessiveness and compulsiveness, as Pluto tends to bring control issues into focus, and we may find ourselves drawn to more intense experiences tonight that have us questioning the extent of our control or bumping up against the control issues of others.  Secrets may be revealed tonight, and those of us with an interest in the occult may find this to be a useful time in our studies, despite its challenges (or perhaps because of them).

The big astrological news of the night is tonight’s Full Moon in Libra.  The Full Moon is time to set intentions, and the polarity of the Sun’s consciousness in Aries with the Moon’s unconsciousness in Libra asks that we acknowledge our unconscious need for relationships even as we are consciously pursuing our individual goals.  The Moon opposes Uranus early tomorrow morning and is within orb for us to feel that opposition during the Full Moon tonight.  The Moon opposing Uranus creates electrifying feelings and impulsive reactions, which in combination with the expansiveness of Jupiter and intensity and obsessive/compulsiveness of Pluto could make this Full Moon a handful, especially for those in law enforcement, hospitals, and other institutions, given Pluto in Capricorn’s emphasis on institutions and maintainance of the status quo being challenged by our need for social harmony and resulting hyper-responsiveness to social cues and disturbances, and the challenge our emotions are already starting to feel from Uranus-conjunct-Eris’ combined forces of rebellion and disruption.  Sensitive individuals would do well to set up easy exit strategies for social situations in case it all becomes too much to handle, and those in positions of authority should prepare for challenges to that authority.  Expecting the unexpected is the best stance for tonight, and those of us working with the intention-setting power of the Full Moon should include the ability to adapt to sudden changes within the structure of our intentions, as well as surprises from unseen quarters.  With Mercury retrograde in Taurus still in orb to feel the trine with the North Node in Virgo, and Mars in Taurus still in orb to feel its trine with Pluto in Capricorn, for all its sociability this is not a frivolous Full Moon, and we are likely to feel how we respond to the social conundrums of tonight enhancing our understanding of how we plan and communicate our souls’ intentions in the physical world, as well as our ability to manifest our desires materially in ways work in harmony with the larger forces and hidden powers in our lives.  This may be an intense Full Moon, but it is also instructive.

Astrology of February 10th, 2017: Full Moon and Eclipse in Leo

The morning may seem clear of notable astrological  aspects, but don’t let that fool you – today is filled with some pretty powerful alignments, and this morning is simply a build-up of planetary energies in preparation for the cosmic spectacle this afternoon.

The day starts in style with Mercury in Aquarius sextiling Venus in Aries this afternoon, and since this is a planetary aspect its gently supportive effects will be felt throughout the day (part of the aforementioned build-up).  Those of us who made use of the more… affectionate side of all that fiery energy yesterday may well have something to talk about this morning, and the Mercury/Venus sextile helps to make such talks go smoothly, albeit with some spirit.  We are also likely to take a very personal pleasure in our communication with groups at this time, as well as communication in relation to social causes, so if you’ve got a fiery speech ready to persuade people to do the right thing, now’s the time to use it!

This Mercury/Venus sextile also is the base of a focused Yod (the “Finger of God”) along the Nodal Axis, with the apex at the North Node in Virgo and the releasing point at the South Node in Pisces.  This aspect combines the influence of Mercury and Venus to put pressure on the North Node via a pair of inconjuncts between the sextiling planets and the apex, and thus whatever use we make of our communication and affections at this time will draw attention to our karmic paths, whether for good or ill according to our free will.  That pressure may create a certain amount of instability in our efforts toward personal growth, but there is power there as well, to be used judiciously.  We may find ourselves falling back on the things that come most easily to us but don’t teach us anything new in an effort to relieve some of the pressure on the North Node, but now is a time to make that pressure work for us, especially with the rest of the astrological activity this afternoon and evening giving us the courage to do so.

This afternoon also sees a trine between the Moon in Leo and Uranus in Aries, continuing the fast-paced Uranian influence and the proud and expressive emotions and instincts of yesterday united in one powerful force.  Since this is a harmonious aspect, this is a great time to make use of an increased flow of creative ideas in moving ourselves forward in the hopes of staking a claim in our preferred realm, whatever that may be, though technological and forward-thinking endeavors are favored, as well as those which create social change.  Keep in mind that Uranus in aspect with the Moon increases the likelihood of mood fluctuations and sudden changes, but with a favorable aspect like this such changes are much easier to navigate, and may well be welcome distractions.

In the late afternoon and early evening we are treated to the combination of the Full Moon in Leo and a penumbral eclipse, when the Moon is shadowed not by the Earth herself but by the edge of her atmosphere, dimming the Moon’s reflection of the Sun’s light but not darkening it completely.  All Full Moons represent culminating energy, a time when the intentions we set at the New Moon come into their fullness, to be released out into the world during the waning of the Moon. The penumbral eclipse creates an added charge to this process, bringing us to a point of crisis that results in epiphany.  This is a time for breakthroughs, but they won’t be without cost.  Lunar eclipses tend to deal with our relationships, both one-on-one and those with a larger reach, and with the Leo/Aquarius polarity involved here there is an added emphasis on navigating the space between self and other, the personal and the impersonal, the needs of the individual versus the needs of the group.

A Leo Full Moon is a time to work on goals relating to self-expression, the arts, lovers, and children, which we are hoping to bring to fruition over the course of the next two weeks until the New Moon and then with the eclipse in the mix we can extend those goals and work on them within the larger pattern over the course of the next six months until the Solar eclipse in August.  Today’s Leo Moon cycles through harmonious aspects with all three of the outer planets involved in the Triangle of Potential that’s been in effect since the holidays, albeit now slowly drifting out of orb, so the Triangle is once again being activated by our emotions and instincts.  Thus, our goals for the rest of the month and for the next six months are going to work best when they take the themes of the Triangle of Potential into account:  balancing change and social harmony, individual growth and the growth of society, the need for freedom and the hope and luck generated by good relationships and partnerships in particular.  With Saturn being the mediator between Jupiter and Uranus in this balancing act, discipline will be necessary to carry us through, but that discipline does not need to become self-punishing.

In addition, yesterday’s Sun/Uranus sextile is still in effect, and the Sun opposing the Moon (which is what a Full Moon is) in combination with the Sun/Uranus sextile, the Moon/Uranus trine, the Moon/Jupiter sextile following shortly after the eclipse, tomorrow’s Sun/Jupiter trine (which is already being felt today), and the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition all together form a Mystic Rectangle, a combination of polarities between Air and Fire, and Masculine and Feminine energies that requires that we give equal attention to all four bodies in these two oppositions (Sun/Moon, Jupiter/Uranus) and the elemental principles that they invoke, thought and spirit, communication and action, as well as temperaments of the four signs involved, Aquarius/Leo and Libra/Aries.  This is a beautifully optimistic configuration to use in putting our talents to work in connection with the Full Moon and eclipse energies.  Challenging, yes, but deeply beneficial if we make good use of it.  In particular we are being asked to balance our conscious and unconscious awareness, and our social and individual needs.  Tall order!  But a worthy one, and one which the combination of celestial events today make clear is well within our power.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, the Full/Eclipsed Moon in Leo activates a Grand Fire Trine with Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius, further emphasizing themes of revolutionary change backed by discipline and emotional fervor with courageous instincts.  Our spirits are blazing with this energy now, and so long as we don’t let it burn us out we can do amazing things with it, with a steady eye to the long term.    This configuration emphasizes our capacity to both ride and direct the waves of change sweeping through our lives in the next six months, both personally and politically.  There is no better time to get involved!

The Moon in Leo sextiling Jupiter in Libra this evening emphasizes the social aspect of this equation, helping us to see how we can express ourselves fully while still valuing and maintaining social harmony and balancing our needs with the needs of others.  This time sees the likelihood that legal matters will work in our favor and may smooth over our dealings with authorities.  It also increases our courage in social situations, making for a good start to the weekend.

Later tonight the Moon in Leo trines Saturn in Sagittarius, which may turn our mood a bit more serious, but since the trine is the most favorable of aspects that seriousness is likely to work to our advantage and bolster our courage.  We may well impress others with our dedication and loyalty at this time, especially if we have been making good use of today’s mojo in service to our very best goals.  Since this aspect starts a void-of-course period, any bold moves are best to have been begun before this late-night time, leaving the end of the night to socialize, plan, and put the finishing touches on the Full Moon and eclipse intentions that we are sending out into the world, and then to dream on them in the floating, intuitive time that the void-of-course brings.

Astrology of December 13th, 2016: Full Moon in Gemini

 artifice-fragment

Today we see a Full Moon in Gemini as well as a busy day for Lunar aspects.  The pace of interactions is fitting for this mutable air sign, and reminds me of a cat getting into everything, curious to check out an assortment of planetary influences.

Getting started in the wee hours of the morning with a pair of inconjuncts, first from the Moon in Gemini to Mercury in Capricorn and then to Pluto in Capricorn, we may have started the day with an unsettled feeling resulting from our instincts in search of something new bumping up against our mental state of self-control determined to stay the course.  Since inconjuncts appear where planets fundamentally don’t understand each other, this interaction isn’t particularly hostile, just uncomfortable with the need to adjust these disparate influences.

A few hours later the Moon trines Jupiter in Libra and opposes Saturn in Sagittarius, emphasizing an emotional state supported by our faith and generosity yet potentially tripped up by fear and insecurity.  We need to learn to get out of our own way and take advantage of the opportunities the day offers us, but not be too self-indulgent in the process.  Jupiter encourages us to excess while Saturn reminds us of our limits, so we are likely to experience temptations followed by the admonition to restrain ourselves, with potentially unpleasant consequences if we don’t heed that warning.

The afternoon and early evening see the Moon sextile Uranus in Aries heightening the frenetic impulses of the Moon in Gemini, which doesn’t exactly encourage us to rein in that temptaion nor the excitement of the Full Moon in Gemini opposite Sun in Sagittarius highlighting the active, social quality of the season while amping up our sense of ideals and all of the myriad ideas being set in motion about them.  With Saturn conjoining the Sun, however, this is a far more serious Full Moon than we might normally expect with both Gemini and Sagittarius involved.  This is especially so given the square that Saturn in Sagittarius and Chiron in Pisces are forming, creating a T-square formation along the Solar/Lunar axis with Chiron as the release point at this Full Moon and moving into their exact square on New Year’s Eve (coinciding with the last day of Mercury retrograde).  Saturn calls attention to where we feel like we’ve been given the short end of the stick in life, but Chiron shows us where we are actually injured, not just afraid of our possible shortcomings.  These two challenging each other rarely looks pretty, instead offering the opportunity for painful learning experiences that may encourage our growth but which most of us would gladly avoid if we could get away with it.  Which the square aspect offers no opportunity for doing.  What it does is remind us that curiosity may kill the cat, while simultaneously making it impossible to avoid looking at whatever has that cat’s attention.  This gets us ready to make the upcoming Mercury retrograde period (Dec. 19th-31st) a time for seriously looking deep into our old wounds and confronting our shadows. On the plus side, Chiron is great for showing us where we can make it through our own difficult learning experiences by passing on what we’ve learned to others going through similar hard lessons.  We just need to do the inner work with Mercury retrograde before we try to pass on what we’ve learned during Saturn & Chiron’s waxing square.

Another configuration plugging into all of this is the electric opposition currently tightening up between Jupiter in Libra and Uranus in Aries, with Saturn moving toward a sextile with Jupiter and a trine with Uranus that will become exact on December 25th, lending Saturn’s discipline to Uranus’ desire for sudden change, with Jupiter amping up both.  This is a serious time for social and ideological change, with Uranus in Aries emphasizing newness and youth assisted by those of their elders who haven’t lost their activist fervor.  All those looking for a messiah on that day would do well to become their own!  This building fever between these three outer planets is the backdrop to tonight’s Full Moon, with Saturn’s conjunction with the Sun focusing these influences on our emotions and instincts via the Full Moon.  This is the time to set our intentions for the paradigm shift that is being set into motion whether we like it or not – we can either shape it ourselves with compassion and mindfulness or be dragged along with it, kicking and screaming.  Because something new is being birthed this holiday season, and its not just another plastic creche scene to feed the corporate kaiju tearing up the countryside…

Tonight finishes with the Moon in Gemini trining Mars in Aquarius to add some drive to that activity before turning void-of-course in the wee hours of tomorrow morning, which may give the night a bit of an anti-climactic feeling unless it’s well-spent in carrying forward the energy of this Full Moon with talking and brainstorming, so long as we don’t try to set true foundations for something important now.  Recognizing exactly what needs healing is what must take priority now, before we purge the infection.
