Astrology Update, May 15th, 2018, New Moon in Taurus, Uranus enters Taurus: Riding Out the Tempest

New Moons emphasize new beginnings, giving us a chance for a fresh start in each sign and the corresponding area of our lives.  This particular New Moon in Taurus gets a double-whammy of the impetus to change as a result of Uranus entering Taurus this morning.  Uranus entering Taurus brings the planet of sudden change to the sign of the immovable mountain for the next seven years, and our material and financial landscapes are likely to shift accordingly, as may our pleasures and values.  Yet sudden to a mountain may seem glacially slow to those of us without lifespans measuring in aeons, or it may move with all of the speed and force of a volcano erupting, but only after a slow build-up. Since the Moon turns void-of-course after its meeting with the Sun this morning, the slow build-up of Taurean change is particularly apropo – despite the zing of Uranian energy, we should not rush into change tonight because the void-of-course state of the Moon makes it unlikely that any changes started now will amount to anything of consequence.  Instead, we should allow Uranian insight to percolate alongside the pragmatic emotions and comfortable consciousness of the New Moon, and wait until tomorrow to start taking action.

Uranus brings an electric charge to the physical and creative realms, with an emphasis on kinesthesia, which is in effect an embodied intuition, where extra-sensory information comes with bodily sensation.  Since Uranus governs technology, we may soon find ourselves experiencing a massive revitalization in how we inhabit the digital parts of our world, our understanding of the ways electronics affect us bodily and materially, and which technologies we want to shape the ways in which we manage our resources.  Since Uranus brings about radical change, we may find ourselves caring less about material matters that previously meant a lot to us, or find ourselves caring very much about things we never previously considered important. Regardless, the fixed nature of Taurus ensures that we will not change our values, attitudes, and actions toward material resources idly – this is a deep and steady process, not frivolous change for the sake of change alone.

The power of this New Moon is amped up significantly due to trines from the New Moon to both Mars and Pluto in Capricorn.  The intentions that we set now can be backed up by serious drive and control, should we choose to exercise them. We may find ourselves in the grip of powerful emotions at this time, though Mars’ subsequent entry into Aquarius tonight may help temper our ambitions somewhat, or at least bring a more rational outlook to the table.  However, Mars is squaring Uranus during the changeover of signs for both planets, creating the potential for volatile tempers and erratic energy to play havoc with much of the next couple of days. Since Mercury in Taurus is also loosely squaring Mars, we would do well to watch our tongues, as the combination of both Uranus and Mercury in hard aspect to Mars could find us inserting our feet into our mouths with more than usual force.  At the very least, we may find ourselves far more impulsive than normal, or taking unusual risks with little forethought, as the Mars/Uranus combo can heighten adrenaline junkie tendencies. The Moon’s void-of-course status for most of the day could well be a blessing under these circumstances, limiting the damage that we can do with careless words and actions, but it’s best not to count on that status to save us.

This New Moon falls within 2 degrees of the fixed star Algol, the eye of Medusa, generally considered the most ill-favored star in the heavens, associated with misfortune and violent death.  Obviously, not every transit to Algol is going to turn nasty, but we would do well to exercise caution with this one, given the situation with Mars just outlined, and the power of the Moon/Sun trine with Pluto.  We are best off channeling the intensity of the Moon/Pluto trine into some creative activity – art produced now is likely to be powerful and moving, and can make good use of that Plutonian intensity rather than leaving us to stew in our own juices or fly off the handle due to the erratic Mars/Uranus/Mercury combo.  The Moon/Pluto trine in combination with Algol does give us a unique opportunity to face our inner demons in preparation for whatever changes Uranus’ entry into Taurus auguries, so New Moon intentions regarding our deepest material fears are especially potent and worthwhile now. This is a time to battle the monsters in our heads and hearts, so that real-world monsters we may encounter later will have a much harder time sinking their teeth into us.

With Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces moving back into a trine during all of this upheaval, the impact of Uranus on our personal thoughts, energy, and emotions is acting against a backdrop of deep emotional and spiritual waters affecting us all on a societal level.  Now is a time to exercise faith and optimism, despite Uranian uncertainty and Mars’ frustrations. Jupiter trine Neptune in water signs encourages our compassion and sensitivity, and our willingness to see the bigger picture and place our own actions within the context of what is good for humanity as a whole.  Tempestuous as these times may seem, we have the capacity to affect real, positive change for ourselves and our society, and today’s New Moon may give us the first inklings of how to do that.

Astrology Update, April 15th, 2018, New Moon in Aries: Flowering Desires

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries falls between Uranus and Eris, within orb to be conjunct to both. New Moons align the consciousness of the Sun with the instincts and emotions of the Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon.

The potential for new beginnings at this New Moon is heightened by the conjunction to Uranus, which brings the power of sudden insight and radical change. The conjunction to Eris combined with Mercury stationing direct at this time emphasizes a need for honesty in communication, which the Aries placement strengthens. Since Uranus operates as the higher expression of Mercury, the potential for sudden insight from unexpected directions is amplified, along with the need to apply lessons from this recent retrograde to communications regarding that insight as we move forward.

This New Moon also sees a Triangle of Potential between Jupiter in Scorpio opposite Venus in Taurus with Jupiter sextile Pluto in Capricorn and Pluto trining Venus. Capricornian Pluto in the mix may help mitigate the self-indulgence associated with Jupiter opposite Venus or it could intensify it, but regardless we are likely to experience heightened optimism and desire for the good things in life, with all of the powerful, earthy sensuousness that Venus in her home sign of Taurus brings to the table being ramped up by the combined forces of Jupiter and Pluto. That Jupiter/Pluto combination can bring hidden feelings to the forefront now, so if you’ve been quietly carrying a torch for someone, now is the perfect time to express those feelings.

The Triangle of Potential magnifies our desires and the capacity to manifest what we want on both a practical and emotional level, and in combination with the Sun/Moon conjuncting and bridging Uranus/Eris during the Mercury station emphasizing the need for both change and honest communication, gives us an opportunity to make major improvements in our lives that serve our own needs but can also strengthen our connections with others. Mars in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces now, aligning our efforts with our ideals, enhancing sensuality, and helping to keep our actions compassionate. This combination of alignments makes this a lovely New Moon for taking new steps in relationships, especially those of a romantic nature, and also makes this a great time for embarking on new creative endeavors.

Astrology Update, New Moon in Pisces, March 17th, 2018: Cultivating Compassion

The New Moon is a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are in alignment, our emotions and our core needs able to work together in service to a larger vision.  This makes the New Moon a perfect time to consider our goals and set our intentions for this lunar cycle, with the seeds we plant growing into fullness during the next two weeks between now and the Full Moon.

Conjunct to Chiron in Pisces, this New Moon sits closely with our oldest and deepest wounds, asking us to allow ourselves to feel where we hurt, and give ourselves the space and time to understand how and why we came by that injury.  With all three still loosely trined to Jupiter, we may find the floodgates open when it comes to what we are feeling, and secrets spilling forth that we never thought we’d admit to anyone. Yet somehow this is all okay. If we are willing to be compassionate with ourselves and others now (and this trio in Pisces makes it far more likely that we can be), then we may find ourselves relieved to be unburdened of that emotional weight we’ve been carrying around for so long.

With Venus and Mercury both in Aries, our thoughts and desires are oriented toward action, stirring the watery softness of the Pisces Sun/Moon/Chiron with direct and fiery expression.  Venus and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo now, keeping their potential for self-absorption in alignment with our karmic paths – though we may be focused on our personal thoughts and pleasures now, that focus is necessary to help us through the pain coming to the surface during this lunar season and to keep us from wallowing in it or becoming overwhelmed and drowning in feelings of self-pity and martyrdom.

Venus and Mercury are also squaring Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn now, forcing us to come to grips with our most self-defeating obsessions, and bringing an element of tough love into the mix.  Black Moon Lilith calls upon us to apply some objectivity to what we think and how we relate, and now we are likely to be confronted with the need to let some of our desires fall by the wayside in order to accomplish what is most important and necessary for our own growth.

At the time of the New Moon this morning, Mars was in Sagittarius still loosely trining Uranus in Aries, amplifying the fiery need for action and quickness, with the potential to yield sudden insight in connection with pursuit of our goals.  But that also placed Mars square to the Sun, Moon, and Chiron in Pisces, and then a few hours later, Mars entered Capricorn, squaring the Moon again after its entry into Aries near mid-day. This doubles the likelihood of our actions being at odds with our emotions and instincts both today and as we move forward into this lunar cycle.  We may find a degree of frustration with our emotions, impatience to get on with our goals in the real world without our fluctuating moods and injured feelings hindering our ability to get things done on a practical level. This frustration is a foreshadowing of more to come, as Mars moves into a conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn that will be exact on April 2nd but is colouring our actions for a week or so on either side.  Saturn being the cosmic taskmaster presenting obstacles and fears to grind action down to agonizing slowness or even a halt and Mars being our drive and active principle, we need to prepare now for the obstacles likely to hit us around the time of the April Fool’s Full Moon in Libra, lest we find ourselves the butt of a cosmic joke, an emotional Poisson d’Avril.

This is even more crucial given Mercury’s impending retrograde, which will be in full swing by the time of the Mars/Saturn conjunction.  In order to get through the immobilizing effect of that conjunction, we need the lessons of this Pisces New Moon to keep us flexible and forgiving, able to instinctively adapt to what faces us because we are willing to allow and accept our deepest sorrows and sensitivities now.  The time we take this lunar cycle to work through the hurts that we feel holding us back and the compassion that we exercise in doing so are necessary to help us get through more trying times to come. With that compassion bolstering our resolve, we can recognize the possibility for success no matter how insurmountable the obstacles before us may seem, and forgive ourselves for the mistakes and sacrifices that we must make along the way.

Astrology Update, Solar Eclipse, February 15th, 2018: Creating New Stories

Today has offered us a New Moon with a Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.  Though visible only to parts of South America and Antarctica, this eclipse has already been felt for a few days now by those of us with luminaries, personal planets, or personal points in the 3rd decanate of Aquarius, and will continue to be felt for a while to come.  That’s the thing about eclipses – the big results in our lives tend not to show up on the day of the eclipse, but instead unfold over the next six months, until the time of the next eclipse.

The last Solar Eclipse was in Leo on August 21st of 2017, indicating changes in core identity and self-expression – that eclipse was personal and creative, and that creativity is mirrored and progressed as we move forward into this new eclipse season.  This eclipse in Aquarius indicates changes in group relations and the causes that capture our imaginations and our dedication, with strong idealist and populist overtones.  The personal changes effected as a result of the Leo Solar Eclipse have consequences that are being carried forward to effect changes on a larger social scale during the six months following this Aquarian Solar Eclipse.

Solar eclipses underscore the extent to which the hidden forces of our instincts can impel deep personal change by casting their shadow on the light of consciousness.  The Sun//Moon conjunction of the New Moon is astrology’s most powerful aspect, a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned.  Thus, new seeds of intention are best planted at the New Moon, when these forces within us are in sync.  The Solar Eclipse gives our intuitive side an edge over our more logical side, triggering situations that can offer us a fresh start in whatever area of our lives the eclipse touches through its contact with our natal charts.

This eclipse is conjoined with Mercury and Juno in Aquarius, emphasizing communication and mature partnerships.  Mercury in combination with the Sun and Moon combines intelligence with will and instinct, so there is a good potential for thoughtful and creative planning to guide us forward during this eclipse season, and Juno’s presence makes it likely that our plans require mutually beneficial relationships and shared emotional intelligence to thrive.  That said, it pays to remember that Mercury is a trickster god, playful but also amoral.  This is the Magician archetype in the Tarot, willing to experiment with whatever is at hand regardless of consequence if it furthers his aims.  This is also a storyteller aspect, and with the Sun and Moon sextiling Uranus in Aries that story is likely to have a few unexpected twists and turns, but with Jupiter in Scorpio squaring Mercury, we can expect more than a bit of pulp sensationalism in this narrative, and should take care not to leave the proverbial Caps Lock on lest we turn our creative dialogs into unintentional shouting matches.  With Jupiter sextiling Pluto, there is power behind the bombast, and we may find our Magician storyteller called to stand up to authority.  These next six months are a good time to craft new narratives, a time favoring writers and content creators ready to take bold new steps, create new stories, and build the alliances needed to get those stories seen and heard by those most in need of them.

Venus in Pisces sextiles Saturn in Capricorn today, underscoring the need to create and maintain stable relationships, with both planets inconjunct to Ceres in Leo, creating a Yod formation (“the finger of God”) that points to how we nurture and express our core selves within those relationships.  Venus in Pisces is sympathetic and adaptable, and harmonizes well with Saturn in Capricorn’s sober pragmatism, both putting pressure on Ceres in Leo’s hunger for a solo spotlight.  We are not being asked to dissolve our egos in relationship, however, for the mature and socially conscious partnerships called for by Juno in Aquarius not only allow for individuality and eccentricity, they encourage these qualities.  The Yod to Ceres does not negate the spotlight; it enhances it, and asks us to create relationships that feed our needs as individuals as a means to a better collective, a greater social vision that recognizes and upholds the rights of all, and gives us all a place to shine.

Mars in idealistic and social Sagittarius trines the North Node in Leo, giving further impetus to this alliance of our core creative and karmic needs with our social consciousness, but Mars also squares Neptune in Pisces today, increasing the potential for deceptive action, seduction, and subterfuge, as well as accidents or harmful actions involving water.  Mars conjunct Vesta increases our idealistic focus, and we may find ourselves engaged in such aggressive pursuit of our goals that we forget to look before we leap, or run afoul of those wishing to take advantage of our idealism for their own nefarious purposes.  Thankfully, Pallas in Taurus trine Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn enhances our cool-headed planning capacity, giving us the ability to step back and assess our circumstances dispassionately, should we choose to make use of it.  The airy detachment that the Aquarian Sun, Moon, and Mercury are famous for is being bolstered by earthy practicality wielded in alignment with divine vision, giving us the capacity to seize our fate with both hands and use our united minds and hearts to create it anew.

Astrology Update, New Moon in Capricorn, January 16th, 2018: Why So Serious?

New Moons are a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned, working together in harmony, giving us a great opportunity to go within and understand ourselves and what we truly want, and then plant seeds of intention accordingly.  With all planets now moving direct and no retrogrades until Jupiter’s retrograde in early March, the seeds that we plant now are especially favored to yield real results, particularly if we are patient and mindful of where our goals fit within the larger plan.

This New Moon occurs at 26 degrees Capricorn, a sign known for its patience and determination, and with Capricorn’s ruler Saturn in this sign along with Pluto, Venus, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith, there is a powerful emphasis on all things Saturnine, including age, time, process, karma, rules, responsibility, limitations, and structure.  There are consequences to the seeds we sow now, and what we grow will take time and patience to cultivate.  Now is a good time to seek the advice of a wise elder, to respect earth-based traditions, tend to our bodies and our bones in particular, and reconnect with the natural world as best we can despite potentially daunting winter weather.

Jupiter in Scorpio sextile to Pluto in Capricorn at this time is part of a repeating pattern for much of 2018, expanding our possibilities for transformation and lending faith and optimism to the process, which are much-needed when facing some of the darker institutional and societal secrets that are being dredged up during Pluto’s Capricorn transit, as well as personal traumas for those of us with planets and luminaries touched by this transit.  This sextile can help us to be real powerhouses in whatever areas of our natal and progressed charts are touched by Scorpio and Capricorn, but it can also amp up the intensity of our experiences there, though being a supportive aspect it is unlikely to yield any dire Plutonian fallout in and of itself.  Since this New Moon, Sun, and Venus in Capricorn sextile Chiron in Pisces, which is also trined by Mars in Scorpio, what hurts are dredged up under Pluto’s influence can yield potent lessons that increase our healing wisdom, compassion, and sense of universal connection, and we are most likely to gain revelations regarding wounds incurred in relation to desire and intimacy.

Mars in Scorpio inconjunct Uranus in Aries during this New Moon makes for sudden surprises that can be jarring to our energy and drive, and with Mars still in orb to its recent conjunction with Jupiter, Mars in Scoprio’s intense focus and motivation continues to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is a time to enlist extra Capricornian caution when driving or engaged in other undertakings in which an accident could have fatal consequences, especially since with both Uranus and Mars in signs that Mars rules, we may find ourselves so focused on our goals that we fail to see potential dangers, or do not give them the respect they deserve.  Since this inconjunct is part of a Learning Triangle with the Sun, Moon, and Venus unexpected lessons are emphasized here, particularly those that call into question our desires and what we do to attain them, with both our conscious and unconscious selves poised to make use of whatever wisdom we may gain from these experiences.  Mars gains the benefit of the sextile to the Sun and Moon in this configuration, making us conscious of our focus and drive while feeling intuitively aligned with that awareness.  But this New Moon and Venus are squaring Uranus, making us equally aware of how tenuous our position is right now.  This is an unsettling aspect, to be sure, and we may find our moods and affections flip-flopping as a result or unusually self-indulgent, sending us in pursuit of newness and excitement with potential frustration and flaring tempers when we find our our desires thwarted.

The Sun, Moon, and Venus all in the last decanate of Capricorn emphasize patient ambition in pursuit of our desires, and Saturn, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith all in the first decanate of Capricorn emphasize patience and persistence even more, with a methodical outlook that transcends temporary fads and is not impressed by Moon/Venus-square-Uranus impulsiveness.  But Uranus in Aries is the height of impatience, eager to start endeavors yet often hard-pressed to keep up the momentum necessary to continue, and we may find ourselves tripping over sudden changes in our feelings and emotional attention-span.  Therefore, whatever seeds of intention we decide to plant at this New Moon, we need to recognize that the dogpile of planets in Capricorn may still give us all of the patience and determination in the world despite whatever emotional surprises the Uranian square may cook up, but they also make it likely that what we choose to pursue now will require much time and tenacity to see to the end, with all-too-many obstacles to test us along the way.

Mercury conjuncts Black Moon Lilith in the first decanate of Capricorn during this New Moon, putting our thoughts and communication in alignment with divine will and giving us a certain degree of emotional distance in our thinking.  Lilith can force us to confront our desires by tempting us with what we cannot attain until we have gained a certain degree of emotional maturity, often learning some very difficult lessons in the process.  There is also a Uranian tone to Lilith’s insights, a primal and electric intuition that is both independent and impersonal, helping us to be more objective about our feelings.  Mercury is also still conjunct Saturn at this time, so our thoughts continue to have a certain gravitas to steady the Uranian influence, and in combination with Black Moon Lilith can create a powerful sense of fatefulness in our ideas and communication now.  Mercury in Capricorn carefully brings together all of the facts to bear upon a subject before arriving at any conclusion, creating an impression of slow thoughtfulness that can be mistaken for a lack of mental dexterity, yet in fact Mercury in Capricorn’s methodical thought-process repeatedly yields the right answer.  If we need to carefully think through all aspects of a plan before making any decision, and do so with mindfulness of the long-term consequences of whatever decision we will make, this Mercury transit is the time to do it.  There is the potential for the Saturn/Mercury/Black Moon Lilith conjunction to yield a somewhat bleak and depressive outlook if we let Saturn’s influence become more weight than motivator, so sensitive souls would do well to remember that and keep a sense of humor on-hand to balance out such a hefty dose of Saturnine seriousness.
