Astrology Update, Solar Eclipse, February 15th, 2018: Creating New Stories

Today has offered us a New Moon with a Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.  Though visible only to parts of South America and Antarctica, this eclipse has already been felt for a few days now by those of us with luminaries, personal planets, or personal points in the 3rd decanate of Aquarius, and will continue to be felt for a while to come.  That’s the thing about eclipses – the big results in our lives tend not to show up on the day of the eclipse, but instead unfold over the next six months, until the time of the next eclipse.

The last Solar Eclipse was in Leo on August 21st of 2017, indicating changes in core identity and self-expression – that eclipse was personal and creative, and that creativity is mirrored and progressed as we move forward into this new eclipse season.  This eclipse in Aquarius indicates changes in group relations and the causes that capture our imaginations and our dedication, with strong idealist and populist overtones.  The personal changes effected as a result of the Leo Solar Eclipse have consequences that are being carried forward to effect changes on a larger social scale during the six months following this Aquarian Solar Eclipse.

Solar eclipses underscore the extent to which the hidden forces of our instincts can impel deep personal change by casting their shadow on the light of consciousness.  The Sun//Moon conjunction of the New Moon is astrology’s most powerful aspect, a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned.  Thus, new seeds of intention are best planted at the New Moon, when these forces within us are in sync.  The Solar Eclipse gives our intuitive side an edge over our more logical side, triggering situations that can offer us a fresh start in whatever area of our lives the eclipse touches through its contact with our natal charts.

This eclipse is conjoined with Mercury and Juno in Aquarius, emphasizing communication and mature partnerships.  Mercury in combination with the Sun and Moon combines intelligence with will and instinct, so there is a good potential for thoughtful and creative planning to guide us forward during this eclipse season, and Juno’s presence makes it likely that our plans require mutually beneficial relationships and shared emotional intelligence to thrive.  That said, it pays to remember that Mercury is a trickster god, playful but also amoral.  This is the Magician archetype in the Tarot, willing to experiment with whatever is at hand regardless of consequence if it furthers his aims.  This is also a storyteller aspect, and with the Sun and Moon sextiling Uranus in Aries that story is likely to have a few unexpected twists and turns, but with Jupiter in Scorpio squaring Mercury, we can expect more than a bit of pulp sensationalism in this narrative, and should take care not to leave the proverbial Caps Lock on lest we turn our creative dialogs into unintentional shouting matches.  With Jupiter sextiling Pluto, there is power behind the bombast, and we may find our Magician storyteller called to stand up to authority.  These next six months are a good time to craft new narratives, a time favoring writers and content creators ready to take bold new steps, create new stories, and build the alliances needed to get those stories seen and heard by those most in need of them.

Venus in Pisces sextiles Saturn in Capricorn today, underscoring the need to create and maintain stable relationships, with both planets inconjunct to Ceres in Leo, creating a Yod formation (“the finger of God”) that points to how we nurture and express our core selves within those relationships.  Venus in Pisces is sympathetic and adaptable, and harmonizes well with Saturn in Capricorn’s sober pragmatism, both putting pressure on Ceres in Leo’s hunger for a solo spotlight.  We are not being asked to dissolve our egos in relationship, however, for the mature and socially conscious partnerships called for by Juno in Aquarius not only allow for individuality and eccentricity, they encourage these qualities.  The Yod to Ceres does not negate the spotlight; it enhances it, and asks us to create relationships that feed our needs as individuals as a means to a better collective, a greater social vision that recognizes and upholds the rights of all, and gives us all a place to shine.

Mars in idealistic and social Sagittarius trines the North Node in Leo, giving further impetus to this alliance of our core creative and karmic needs with our social consciousness, but Mars also squares Neptune in Pisces today, increasing the potential for deceptive action, seduction, and subterfuge, as well as accidents or harmful actions involving water.  Mars conjunct Vesta increases our idealistic focus, and we may find ourselves engaged in such aggressive pursuit of our goals that we forget to look before we leap, or run afoul of those wishing to take advantage of our idealism for their own nefarious purposes.  Thankfully, Pallas in Taurus trine Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn enhances our cool-headed planning capacity, giving us the ability to step back and assess our circumstances dispassionately, should we choose to make use of it.  The airy detachment that the Aquarian Sun, Moon, and Mercury are famous for is being bolstered by earthy practicality wielded in alignment with divine vision, giving us the capacity to seize our fate with both hands and use our united minds and hearts to create it anew.

Astrology Update, February 26th, 2017: New Moon and Eclipse in Pisces

This morning starts with the New Moon in Pisces and an annular Solar Eclipse, the “ring of fire” in which the moon blocks much but not all of the Sun, due to being further away from the Earth and therefore appearing smaller in relation to the Sun.  This will not be visible in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is potent nonetheless.  The New Moon is a time for intention setting, preparing the energy that will grow between now and the Full Moon, at which time we release that intention out into the world.  Eclipses, on the other hand, set something new into motion over a six month stretch, with the effects from this one stretching forward until the next Solar Eclipse in August.

The Moon and the Sun are conjunct in Pisces, which also contains Mercury, Neptune, Chiron, and the South Node, putting a heavy emphasis on Piscean themes of emotional sensitivity, spirituality, fantasy, and karma.  Pisces is the oldest sign of the zodiac, so endings are emphasized here and new beginnings as well, thanks to three planets and a dwarf planet in Aries (Venus, Mars, Uranus, and Eris).  Now is the time for us to muster both faith and courage to let go of the past in order to leap forward into the new, which may not be what we were expecting.  Since the Moon and Sun are conjunct between the North Node and Neptune, coming to terms with the past is especially emphasized, but the Moon and Sun are closer to Neptune, so there is a strong potential for confusion here.  Neptune is the transcendental ruler of Pisces and emphasizes dissolving boundaries and merging with the Universal, so the process of dissolution is stronger than the grip of the past, but if we fear letting go then that process will be more difficult.  We may find ourselves caught in the grip of nostalgia, even if that vision of the past is seen through overly rosy glasses.  One way to help ourselves move forward is actually to learn more about the past, the real past, not the idealized one nor the one hidden by those for whom the truth would be inconvenient.  Now is a time for dreaming as well, and meditation on the patterns in our lives, especially those pertaining to trauma, whether personal, familial, or generational (or all of the above).

As if to emphasize the need to dissolve old ties and let go, later this morning Mercury squares Black Moon Lilith, challenging our already fuzzy mental capacities with full immersion into our most difficult and destructive belief patterns, adding further fuel to the Eclipse-born impetus to discover the truth about our karmic patterns.  Black Moon Lilith here may add to our unconscious fears, but also gives us a push to break through them in order to gain a fuller understanding of ourselves and how we have been shaped by larger patterns and attitudes that may not even be truly our own, imparted to us by family and society.

This afternoon, we have still further opportunity to transcend our old patterns and float in the sea of intuitive knowing as the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces.  We are likely to have a powerful instinctual need to escape reality at this time, and may find ourselves bewildered by what we are feeling now.  Those of us who are spiritually inclined may feel like we have been touched by the Divine, or fate, but some of us may also find our addictions or chronic illnesses hitting hard now.  Our moods may tend toward the romantic, or the introspective, or the nostalgic, or some combination thereof, and while this can amplify confusion and escapism, it can also aid in the process of dissolving old ties and making our peace with the past.  This is a good time to work through these feelings creatively with art or music, or any other activities that thrive when fed by an active imagination.

Early this evening Mars in Aries conjuncts Uranus in Aries, activating the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition as well as a loose cardinal T-square with Pluto.  That Mars/Uranus conjunction is going to emphasize a drive toward the future and new beginnings that may be of the hang-onto-your-hat variety, as Uranus is impatient even when not in impulsive Aries and is also still conjunct Eris, goddess of chaos and discord.  And with Jupiter blowing air into the coals, his emphasis on relationships and social harmony just fuels the Uranian fire that demands freedom, self-fulfillment, and revolutionary change that Mars provides the drive to achieve.  All of the watery emphasis on the past that we experienced with the Eclipse and the Moon/Neptune conjunction now gives way to four-alarm fire steering us in a wholly new direction that we may well feel we have absolutely no control over.  But for many of us, no matter how disconcerting that push from forces larger than ourselves may feel, on some level it is likely to be a relief, a natural progression, a vital shift in consciousness that needs to happen.  Scary, yes.  But oh-so-necessary.

Layering Lessons from Multiple Astrological Events

The past couple of weeks have been a bit intense astrologically, with the April 15th Lunar Eclipse, April 23rd Cardinal Grand Cross, and April 29th Solar Eclipse all making waves, especially for people with prominent Cardinal sign placements in their natal charts.  Reverberations from such events continue in our lives for some time after the initial event, with eclipses in particular setting the tone for the next six months in whatever areas of life they impact, as represented by the houses and signs they fall into in our natal charts, progressed charts, and relocation charts.  Since I have both luminaries and multiple planets in Cardinal signs and those signs fall in the angular houses of my natal chart, I’ve been feeling the effects of the square/opposition aspects leading up to that Grand Cross for some time (primarily since the Pluto/Uranus squares started in June of 2012).  These effects have been most distinctly expressed in the dynamic between my interpersonal relationships and my livelihood and the drastic restructuring of both.  Since astrology is one of the tools I use for making sense of the universe in the midst of significant life-changes, layering in the lessons of the eclipses over the next six months seems like a useful mid-range planning tool for navigating the larger life lessons that have come to a head with the Cardinal Grand Cross (and we Capricorns love our plans!).

The Lunar Eclipse started things out with Venus in Pisces trine Jupiter in Cancer amping up sensory values, and the Moon conjunct Ceres on the North Node in Libra opposed by the Sun on the South Node in Aries.  There was a sense of fateful choice here, concerning abundance and nurturing in particular (as represented by Ceres), with the ego (Sun) sticking to the patterns of the past (South Node) and the emotions/instincts (Moon) leading toward a more fruitful future, if we could just get over our fear of change long enough to embrace it!  In my case, the eclipse fell across my 1st/7th house axis, governing my identity and my relationships, with the Moon/Ceres/North Node in my 1st house.  In connection with the Cardinal Grand Cross and the impact of the ongoing Pluto/Uranus squares on my natal chart, the Lunar Eclipse emphasized the sense of being at a major crossroads in my life.

I’ve briefly discussed the Cardinal Grand Cross here, with a heavy emphasis on Pluto because its ongoing transit through my natal 4th house and impending transit of my natal Venus, Sun, and Mercury is much on my mind lately and fueling my current Pluto studies.  Whether natal or transiting, a Grand Cross is covering all four elements in either cardinal, fixed, or mutable signs, with the energy invoked going in all four directions at once, which can emphasize a sense of being stuck or trapped.  With cardinal energy the trapped feeling especially is emphasized, as cardinal energy is initiatory, action-oriented, and so it’s looking for a place to go but being both pulled and pushed in all four directions at once it can’t really commit to going anywhere.  With Uranus in the mix, I found that this energy felt alternately frenetic then pinned in place by Plutonian control, so the actual day of the Grand Cross I wound up being much more energetic and social than I expected, but then spent the next several days in a hectic work/social schedule that was clearly too much for me, as evidenced by the fairly drastic lupus flare-up that I experienced as soon as I got a full night’s sleep after all that activity (Pluto putting the kibosh on all that rampant Uranian electricity!).  Uranus in Aries has been slowly moving out of conjunction to my natal Moon and opposition to my natal Uranus on my Ascendant/Descendant axis, and at the time of Cardinal Grand Cross was almost exactly conjunct my natal Vertex in the 7th house.  So the sense of a fateful crossroads being invoked in the Lunar Eclipse was even more emphasized for me by the Cardinal Grand Cross, as the Vertex represents a twist of fate in relation to a person, place, or event.  In addition, Mars retrograde transiting my 1st house and conjuncting my natal Uranus/Ascendant has had my fiery lunar Aries temper bubbling just under the surface and constantly in danger of erupting every time I feel as though my forward progress is being thwarted, which during Mars retrograde in Libra seems to be most of the time!  Thus, a lot of the reverberations of the Grand Cross for me have involved finding ways to channel my energy and agitation when my conscious will comes to an impasse.  There is a strong feeling here of the need to rewrite the rules under which I have been living (Pluto), and side-step old patterns of dealing with problems, like Alexander slicing through the Gordian knot (the thought of which always has my inner comic book geek quoting Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias of The Watchmen:  “Lateral thinking, you see.  Centuries ahead of his time.”).  This is heightened by Jupiter in my 10th house opposing Pluto and demanding that I re-make my career with more faith and vision.

The Solar Eclipse’s Mercury/Sun in Taurus conjunct to my natal Saturn trined Pluto in Capricorn beginning its transit of my natal Venus/Sun/Mercury in my 4th house.  Since a Solar Eclipse happens during a New Moon, it has an initiatory quality to it, a time of new beginnings characterized by the occultation of the ego by emotions and instincts and then the ego’s subsequent revelation after the darkness – as if our natures are revealed more fully by first hiding them and then drawing the curtain away again, emphasizing what was hidden.  This is all the more true when it taps into Pluto, which governs mysteries and secrets.  Mercury conjuncting the Sun and Moon in Taurus emphasizes communication of Venusian matters (since Taurus is ruled by Venus).  These include our values, love, pleasure, the arts, and creature comforts.  Since all of this is occurring in my natal 8th house, there is the potential for deeply transformative results from this kind of communication, and since this eclipse conjuncts my natal Saturn, that challenges my inhibitions and feelings of limitation.  Yet Saturn never challenges us without also giving us the strength and discipline to overcome those challenges, so here I have to face my ego, emotions/instincts, and my modes of expression in both a practical and artistic manner (Taurus/Venus) in order to work through Saturn’s challenges.  A tall order perhaps, but one in keeping with the challenge of my North Node in Pisces in the 6th house, as discussed in this blog’s first post.   In connection with Mercury’s propensity for connecting duality and oppositions, this is even more appropriate to my natal chart and my Nodal Axis, given the opposite placement of signs in all of my houses.

These three configurations are emphasizing an ongoing pattern of life-lessons I’ve been wrestling with over the past couple of years, with the changes required by those lessons about to come to a head over the next few months – right across that six-month swath of eclipse influence.  If I had to distill their underlying message for myself in a nutshell, it would most likely end up being some variation on Neil Gaiman’s advice to “Make Good Art.”  😉  Everything in my life may be going through a major overhaul, and the path before me is murky at best, but all of that trapped cardinal energy looking for an outlet has the creative engine seriously fired up, so I’ll take that as a good thing.  🙂
