Tarot for February 21st, 2017: The Moon

Today’s Tarot card is (XVIII) The Moon, ruled by Pisces, where the Sun, South Node, Neptune, and Chiron are currently transiting.  As noted in today’s astrology update, three of these are in play in the alignments for today, making this card especially pertinent.

In the Thoth deck the Moon appears dimly lighting the way between two giant towers, each with a statue of Anubis, the Egyptian guardian of the Underworld standing before it, with jackals at each statue’s feet ready to fall upon and devour anyone foolish enough to walk that way out of mere curiosity.  We do not know what lies beyond the mountain pass seen behind the towers, but given the presence of Anubis, it seems likely to lead to the Underworld, and therefore not a path to tread idly.  On the ground before the towers we see Kheper-Ra, the early morning aspect of the Sun, seen here as a lowly dung beetle pushing the disc of the Sun toward the horizon.  Dripping from the Moon are nine blood-red Yod-shaped drops forming the triton symbol of Neptune, transcendental ruler of Pisces, emphasizing the Neptunian elements of this realm:  spirituality, dreaming, psychic understanding, hopes, dreams, illusions, delusions, neuroses, depression, and illness.

We are at a portal, a place of initiation, one that requires caution and careful consideration before we enter it and face what lies within.  Much of the way before us is obscured, so we would do well to find guidance, but even here we must be wary, as not all who offer themselves as guides at this time are trustworthy.  Since the Moon governs the unconscious, the journey before us may lead into the depths of our own unconscious, where our ordinary senses are of little use and we must expand our consciousness in order to understand what we are perceiving.  Our own fears and delusions may cloud our judgement now, so we need to have a strong sense of our true self before we embark on this journey if we are to come through it unscathed.  This is the Dark Night of the Soul, when we must confront our own shadow before we can come to the new beginning promised in the card that follows, The Sun, which is foreshadowed in the disc held by Kheper-Ra.  The Sun here also indicates that we must shine the light of consciousness on our unconscious processes.

The Moon here also governs the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, and so we may find ourselves wrestling with the survival-based terrors of our physical selves during this time.  Pisces governs the 12th house, one of the three houses of endings, also known as the House of Sorrows and Self-Undoing.  This is a place of isolation and confinement, a time of trial and testing through which we must pass in order to be reborn to the life beyond this dark place.  Confronting our own darkness is not an easy task, but it is worth persevering through if we are to attain the wisdom that awaits on the other side.

Tarot for February 20th, 2017: Indolence

Today’s Tarot card is the 8 of Cups (Indolence).

The 8 of Cups is ruled by Saturn in Pisces.  Saturn is currently in Sagittarius, where the Moon is also today and from where the Moon squared Chiron in Pisces this afternoon.  Like Saturn, Chiron shows our limitations within a sign, albeit on a more injurious level than Saturn.  In Pisces, these limitations are on the spiritual level, affecting our ability to perceive connections with others or patterns that are larger than ourselves and our immediate contacts, and also impacting our emotional sensitivity and compassion.  We may feel trapped by the larger forces in our lives, unable to see a way through because the energy of change in this situation is blocked.

Unlike Chiron, however, Saturn shows a situation where our fears and insecurities create the greater portion of our limitations.  Yes, life can be difficult and we can find ourselves bumping up against factors that seem to limit our capabilities, but ultimately those limitations are fed by what we fear might be true rather than what actually is true.  Saturn has a depressive quality, and we may find ourselves wallowing in it lately, surrendering to feelings of martyrdom and hopelessness.

The Thoth deck’s version of this card shows the water flow of the cups has slowed to a trickle, with the majority of the cups empty, the pool beneath still and brackish.  Lacking sensitivity, connection, and compassion, our emotions have become stagnant.  Exhaustion and apathy reign over all.  Living in the past keeps our lives dead to the present.

The 8 of Cups shows us a stagnant situation that we must leave behind.  It is time for us to move forward, leaving the past and opening ourselves up to change.

Tarot for February 12th, 2017: Science, reversed

Today’s Tarot card is the 6 of Swords (Science), reversed.  We last saw this card on December 5th, in its upright position.

This card is ruled by Mercury in Aquarius, where Mercury is currently transiting.  Mercury was involved in a focused Yod with Venus in Aries with the North Node as the Yod’s apex during Friday’s Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse in Leo, and the Moon is currently in Virgo, which Mercury rules, increasing the emphasis on Mercury themes this weekend, especially with yesterday’s Moon/North Node conjunction reinforcing the theme of the Yod.

So why the upside-down position then?

The Thoth deck traditionally does not use card reversals, instead relying on the other cards surrounding the reversed card to clarify the situation.  However, for single-card draws like this, there are no other cards to rely on, and I have always found card reversals to be useful, regardless of what deck I am working with.  There are a few possibilities for the meaning of a card reversal:

  1.  The normal meaning of the card is being negated.
  2.  The meaning of the card needs to be seen in a different light – the “headstand” that the card is doing is to gain perspective.
  3.  The reversed position of the card is a means of emphasizing the meaning of that card, drawing extra attention to itself.

What interpretation I choose is based on my intuition as well as what is going on in the skies.  In this case, we can see already that the 3rd option is a possibility.  However, the 1st & 2nd options also may flavor this card at this time, specifically because of the Moon in Virgo, which exercises Virgoan processes in unconscious space.  Because Mercury deals with the mind, our thoughts, and communication, it can relate to both conscious and unconscious thought, but typically fares better in a conscious space – the very concept of “mindfulness” harnesses conscious thought in order to expand our awareness of our everyday thoughts and surroundings.  The Moon is not particularly comfortable in Virgo because of this.  So, already the skies are reflecting that our thoughts are likely to show up in a different manner today, after being powerfully activated over the past two days on both the conscious and unconscious levels, with the unconscious side being more emphasized today.  We may find ourselves more distracted today, or with a focus entirely different from what we had intended.

The normal meaning of the 6 of Swords relates to planning and research, searching for the truth and in the process potentially bringing multiple perspectives to bear on a situation – the scientific method may start with a hypothesis but keeps the mind open to possibilities until the facts determine the outcome.  But given the Moon’s interactions with Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron today, we may find it harder to gather those multiple perspectives harmoniously, and facts may seem in short supply.  With Pluto in the mix, even in harmony with the Moon, we may find it hard to communicate effectively without a lot of intense emotion jarring what we would prefer to be rational discourse.  The objectivity normally found with the 6 of Swords is likely to be difficult to muster with the strong Piscean influence on our emotions coming from Neptune and Chiron, especially during this time of instinctive alignment with the intense changes going on in our lives right now combined with deep awareness of past hurts and our ongoing cycles of pain.  The 6 of Swords usually indicates that we have come out of the storm into a period conducive to regrouping, assessing, and determining the best path forward.  The 6 of Swords reversed suggests that we are not out of the woods yet, and this day is perhaps best spent forgoing our Aquarian plans in favor of Virgoan healing, letting our minds work unconsciously behind the scenes rather than pushing for logic where it is not likely to be found.  Now is not a time for over-thinking things, and instead, we need to give ourselves the space to go with the flow of deep, unconscious knowledge coming to us now, and finally learn from our mistakes and heal our huts.

Tarot for February 9th, 2017: Worry

Today’s Tarot card is the 5 of Disks (Worry).  We saw this card back in December right before the Mercury retrograde, and though it doesn’t seem much in-keeping with the abundance of supportive aspects going on today in particular, still it is likely to be pertinent for a lot of us in our current socio-economic and political environment.

The 5 of Disks is ruled by Mercury in Taurus, the powers of our minds and communication in a fixed earth sign.  Now there are plenty of times when it is probably a good idea to put our minds and communication to bear on our physical world, whether in terms of finances, health, or environment.  Yet Mercury is the planetary ruler of two mutable signs (Gemini and Virgo) and likes, no needs to be flexible.  Fixed earth is not a healthy place for Mercury to stay.  Mercury is nimble and agile and wants to be free to roam, rather than being weighed down by earthy considerations.  This doesn’t mean that Mercury can’t be practical, but how is it practical to be stuck?  And that’s just how our minds feel  under the heavy Taurean influence.

When our minds are always bogged down in material concerns, we have a hard time generating the emotion to care about anything else, the spirit with which to achieve what we desire, or the thoughts to plan our path and communicate our needs, and as a result, we don’t make any real progress in the material world.  The elements and the principles associated with them work best when combined proportionately, rather than struggling to move in the state of imbalance shown in the 5 of Disks.

For those of us in the strangling grip of worry, giving our minds and communication room to move out of the topics of material concerns is one of the most important steps that we can take.  Relentlessly bashing our heads against a problem is unlikely to solve it, no matter how thoroughly we’ve been programmed to believe that “hard work” (and by extension hard thought) is the best way to make progress.  This card has shown up today precisely because we need to take advantage of the energetic atmosphere now to take our minds off of our troubles for a little while and have some fun, and trust that things will unfold as they should.

Tarot for February 8th, 2017: Pleasure, reversed

Today’s Tarot card is the 6 of Cups (Pleasure), reversed.  Given the astrological jostling of our emotions and instincts today, the phrase “Pleasure, reversed” in itself is probably not far from the mark, though the meaning of the card in this position is even more apt once we delve into it further.

The 6 of Cups is ruled by the Sun in Scorpio.  This is the current placement of Black Moon Lilith, the lunar apogee, and she has just entered the critical 29th degree where she will remain until this time next week.  This critical 29th degree transit is a time when the last lessons of Scorpio must be learned in relation to Black Moon Lilith before moving on to the first lessons of Sagittarius.  Black Moon Lilith is about letting go, surrendering to our own powerlessness, and understanding our frustrations, and in Scorpio that can mean a double-whammy, since Scorpio is jointly ruled by Mars classically and Pluto transcendentally.  Mars deals with our focus, drive, sexuality, and aggression, and Pluto deals with our issues of control, how we assert or deny our power, intensity, transformation, and death.  Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio then asks us to surrender to the mystery in our lives in ways that are likely to feel scary, intense, and sometimes even hopeless.  Through this surrender we not only gain wisdom and understanding of our own depths and endurance, but also in opening ourselves to the void we make possible the entry of that which we desire into our lives.  We experience the death of ego for this time so that ego is no longer our stumbling block in the areas of our lives governed by Scorpio.  Ironically, by surrendering our desires we create the space for our desires to be fulfilled.  Embracing Yin is necessary in order to equally embrace Yang.

Thus, we experience the tumultuousness of our emotions in response to multiple challenges between the Moon and outer planets today, the big forces in our lives that we cannot control battering our feelings and instincts, and in the wee hours of tomorrow morning the Moon will trine Black Moon Lilith, connecting our feelings in the aftermath of this day with all of that helplessness and need to surrender.  And there we will find our space of emptiness with which to welcome our own power that we could not see in the light of our own ego (the Sun).

Yes, seeing the 6 of Cups upended can feel like a kick in the gut.  We want pleasure in our lives, and to feel and enjoy the fullness of our emotions, the fulfillment of our desires.  At the same time, when we are experiencing difficult emotions like frustration and helplessness, there is a very real danger of turning off emotionally, stifling what we feel in order to be able to get through our days without tripping up on potentially disruptive feelings.  But as Black Moon Lilith is currently pointing out, we need to be willing to face our own dark depths and dive down deep into all of the awfulness of what we feel if we are ever to have that pleasure that we so desire.

On the plus side, the 6 of Cups reversed can signal that we are finally ready to shuck off our rose-coloured glasses, let go of the past, and do the hard work necessary to bring what we desire into our lives.  The critical 29th degree of Scorpio that Black Moon Lilith is transiting is after all the place of the last lessons of the sign, signaling that this is a time for completion in this stage of our life.  Sometimes the physical and emotional healing and transformation that are signaled when this card is upright requires that we undergo a healing crisis, a time when things get worse before they get better.  Seeing the 6 of Cups reversed today shows us that we are ready to confront our own fears of letting go, and step forward into the darkness on our way to a better future.
