Astrology Update, January 24th-25th, 2018, In the Wake of the 1st Quarter Moon

“Today’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus sees the first challenge in this lunar cycle to the intentions we set at last week’s New Moon in Capricorn and have been building on since….”

I started to write about last night’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus and stopped. I’d been struggling with writer’s block all day and into the night, not simply at a loss for words, but rather feeling the need to work with the energies of this moon phase through visual art instead of writing. Or at least find some balance between the two, to find the path of least resistance in working with the inherent challenge of the First Quarter Moon’s square between the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Taurus, two fixed signs who each have no interest in moving to accommodate the other.

To successfully navigate this kind of challenge we need to really feel it, not just emotionally, but kinaesthetically, as a voraciously thinking and socially attuned Solar Consciousness just bumped up against our instinctive desire to take pleasure in the physical world. In a society which has long valued mind over matter and upheld the supremacy of the soul over the body, the visual over the tactile, coming to a real place of understanding between the two is no small feat.

Why does it say “avowed hedonist” toward the end of the self-description in my header on Twitter? Because I believe that we should enjoy our lives enthusiastically and unashamedly or not at all. Ourselves, just as we are. We all have our little indulgences, material or otherwise. And the “otherwise” is heightened now with Mercury conjuncting Pluto reviving the last reverberations of Pluto’s waxing square to Uranus that has caused so much societal and personal disruption in recent years.  Mercury’s conjunction to Pluto eeking out the last bit of growth potential from that Pluto/Uranus square has heightened the potential for challenging sudden changes in thought or speech at a time when our obsessions and compulsions are exerting a powerful influence on our minds.  As Mercury sextiles Jupiter today and moves forward toward the exact square to Uranus this upcoming Sunday, plus with Jupiter’s recent sextile to Pluto still in effect, we are likely to find these mental changes and unusual conversations more and more challenging, confronted with ideas that may seem too radical in the context of the status quo, yet we also have an increased capacity to make use of the transformative power of Pluto’s influence, to gain greater awareness of our own subconscious motivations and come to a greater sense of wholeness in the process, if we are willing to face the parts of ourselves we have not previously recognized.

Both the classical and modern rulers of Aquarius have coloured our thoughts and feelings over the past 24 hours, with Saturn in Capricorn trine the Moon in Taurus at the time of the First Quarter Moon, increasing the strength of our emotions yesterday, and we have felt these over the course of the night in our bones, slowly, steadily, the daily processes of our experiences informing our psyches, rippling both outward and inward. Saturn is all about process, all about slow and steady progress over time, and very much about the body – working within the limitations of the physical form, but also grounding ourselves and our feelings at a time when the forward-thinking consciousness of the Sun in Aquarius might easily send us too far out into space, too far into our future and not mindful enough of the present.

Drawing for me is a very embodied process – more than one person who knows me and my artwork has commented on the clear connection between my drawings and my dancing, as there is always a sense of movement within my best work. The drawing that is a part of this post is by no means a completed drawing, but rather a continuation of a glorified doodle that I started a while back and hadn’t initially intended to do much else with. And I will probably end up painting over it at some later date. But for the moment, it is a good reminder of the need to be patient with the process in this lunar cycle and in this coming year, to be mindful of our bodies as we pursue our minds’ goals and our social causes, and to give ourselves recognition for the progress we are making while recognizing that we still have a long way to go. The journey may be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be painful.

Astrology Update, March 5th, 2017: Possibility and Reality

We are still feeling the effects of Venus stationing retrograde yesterday and will start to feel the effects of tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction as the day progresses.  Though Mercury in Pisces is not known for mental acuity and can be easily confused on the level of strictly analytical thought, still it is highly intuitive and capable of reading people well enough to pluck others’ thoughts seemingly out of mid-air, and tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction may make us highly conscious of our intuitive capabilities in both thought and communication.  Since Mercury is the ruler of Gemini, the sign that the Moon is transiting throughout today, our emotional and instinctive reactions may take some of this intuitive flavor, though the emphasis will still be on the classically Gemini qualities of curiosity, mental flexibility, communication, and speed.

In true Gemini fashion the Moon started the day off quickly enough with a sextile to Venus in Aries shortly after the witching hour and then a square to Mercury less than an hour later.  That Moon/Venus sextile was likely to inspire some emotional impulsiveness, especially in terms of our interactions with others, and may have inspired more than a few of us to stay up later than usual as a result of Gemini curiosity fueling the Aries desire for action.  However, the square with Mercury may have reinforced the more difficult qualities of Mercury in Pisces – the brain fog and confusion resulting from Piscean blurring of boundaries within our thoughts and communication, made all the more potent by the residual effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Neptune conjunction.  It’s just as well that this was happening during the wee hours of the morning for those of us in the continental United States.  For those of us working night shift, this could well have made for problems with concentration and communication and even fine motor skills.

Closer to dawn, the Moon in Gemini squared the Sun in Pisces, creating a challenge from our unconscious to our conscious selves.  The First Quarter Moon is a time of crisis in the build-up of energies connected to the intentions that we set at the New Moon/Eclipse, energies that will continue to build up to their release point at the Full Moon.  This First Quarter Moon sees our emotions and instincts in the mental sign of Gemini and our core consciousness in the emotional and intuitive sign of Pisces, which may have us feeling as though things are flipped on their heads and may result in us questioning what is real.  On the plus side, Gemini is great at synthesizing information and Pisces is great at integrating opposites and working within paradoxes, so these two signs are well-equipped to process conflicting data, but we still may find ourselves swimming in a bit of information overload during this time, information that requires a unified effort on both the conscious and unconscious levels to make use of.

The big astrological news of the day is this afternoon’s trine from Mars in Aries to Saturn in Sagittarius, creating a powerfully supportive connective between our drive and our discipline.  Mars in Aries is already potent, being in one of the signs that he rules, but adding Saturn’s patience and steadying influence now helps us to keep from raging forward impatiently and instead applies our focus with Saturnine direction, recognizing the perils and pitfalls that we must avoid, especially on the ideological front, and using our challenges and restrictions as a necessary part of the refining process to make the actions that we take now more likely to yield the results that we desire.  This afternoon is a time to make use of our energy and ambition, knowing that we have a greater capacity to do so with wisdom and integrity, aligning the needs of the self (Aries) with the needs of the bigger picture (Sagittarius).  Physical activity is favored now, as well as tackling the tough jobs we previously were reluctant to face.  Mars in connection with Saturn gives us the courage to face our fears, while Saturn keeps that courage from turning into foolhardiness.  This is a great time to break through procrastination, as we have the confidence now to work through our insecurities, calmly and steadily but also with just the right touch of excitement.  This is the intersection of possibility and reality, so it’s time to take advantage of it and use it to take those bold and necessary steps into the future that we’ve held back on for far too long.

To add to this boost in our personal power is a trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra a little later in the afternoon, increasing our inventiveness and curiosity as well as our instinctive responsiveness to others.  This helps us to take those Mars/Saturn-driven actions in ways that don’t run counter to our purposes in social realms, instead facilitating our communication skills and our optimism in supportive and exciting ways.  We may find ourselves flying high on a sense of hope and fun during this time, but since we are being constructively grounded by that Mars/Saturn trine, we can enjoy our mood this afternoon while still making good progress on the things that matter to us and not floating too far into the ether.  The trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra particularly enhances our good fortune in groups, especially when utilizing our communicative and technological skills and keeping a sense of lightheartedness.

The mood of inventiveness and stimulation continues this afternoon and into early evening with the Moon in Gemini sextiling Uranus in Aries, and since the Moon is making contact with both Jupiter and Uranus in short order it does activate the recent Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in orb to have lingering effects on our lives in connection with our individual identities and our relationships.  The Moon sextiling Uranus now adds to the unpredictability and inventiveness of this afternoon’s mix, encouraging us to think outside of the box and utilizing new strategies and technologies to achieve our aims.  Uranus is a revolutionary, so our instinct now is to break free from constricting patterns and cast an eye toward the future while being mindful of what we truly want for ourselves, not just what society tries to convince us we want.

As the evening progresses, our moods may take a more somber turn as the Moon in Gemini squares Chiron in Pisces, dredging up old hurtful patterns in both our own lives and the lives of those close to us.  We may find our earlier chattiness has inadvertently stepped on some toes, or our attempts to break new ground for ourselves have conjured up ghosts from our pasts that must be laid to rest before we can make real progress, and since our instincts are still set to Gemini’s fun-loving and somewhat flippant mode, we may experience some confusion as to what is actually going on and why the fun seems to have turned sour.

The moodiness brought on by this aspect is only exacerbated late tonight by the Moon in Gemini opposing Saturn in Sagittarius, turning our moods somber and even depressive.  All of the action of the day is still only a drop in the bucket of what needs to be done to get our world back on course, and that sobering sense of reality is Saturn’s stock-in-trade, deflating the Gemini giddiness that had us whirling through much of the day.  Our pace becomes slower now, whether or not we want it to.  Gemini tends to be an insomniac and Saturn tends to remind us of our limitations, so I expect that more than a few of us will encounter sleeping challenges tonight, whether of the variety that keeps us up tossing and turning or the type that knocks us out much earlier than anticipated, with still so much left in need of doing.  Since we will still be feeling some residual effects of the Mars/Saturn trine into tomorrow, however, navigating tonight’s Moon/Saturn opposition is really a matter of awareness of what is necessary to keep our engines running, and the recognition that tomorrow is another day, with new possibilities to build into realities.

Astrology of February 3rd, 2017: No Half-Measures

The day begins early with the Moon in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo in the wee hours of the morning, setting a steady emotional tone for most of the day that moves in harmony with our karmic purpose,  slowly and cautiously supporting us in pursuit of our soul’s deepest goals.

That steady influence is a necessary grounding to the fiery crackle of Venus entering Aries in the latter half of the morning, setting our desires ablaze!  Venus rules Taurus, so our emotional steadiness is still highly conscious of her new sizzle, and her self-assured pursuit of pleasure.  Venus in Aries will let us know of her intentions in no uncertain terms, and especially with the deep strength of the Moon in Taurus’ fixed earth to provide her with the secure space in which to burn, she’s not likely to take any half-measures in her quest.  That’s the thing about Venus in Aries – she is indeed on a quest.  Aries wants to be the big damn hero, and the feminine expression of this sign is no exception.  And with Mars having recently entered Aries as well, our (sexual) drive and our affections are now both headstrong and hellbent on saving the day, from whatever it may need saving from.

The Moon in Taurus sextile Neptune in Pisces this afternoon may soften the blaze only slightly, but it also puts a rosy glow around our emotions, and since this is a gently harmonious aspect, even if we are being a little bit overly optimistic for the moment, chances are that it’s merited – after the past couple of weeks we could stand to see our world and the people in it in a better light.  This is a lovely time for creativity and exploring our spiritual outlook a bit more, and enjoying our connections with others.

Tonight is the night of the 1st Quarter Moon, with the Moon in Taurus squaring the Sun in Aquarius.  This is the challenge phase in the process of building the energy of the intentions that we set at the New Moon, in which our need for material security may well be challenged by the needs of our own growth and the growth of society.  We may also need to find ways to mediate between our physicality and our rationality – for some of us, the toll of weeks of trying to understand this difficult time in our evolution may start to take a toll on our health.  We may want to enjoy our creature comforts yet feel restless and unable to relax.  Still, Venus’ entry into Aries has given us a shot of energy in terms of what we take pleasure in, so despite the Moon in Taurus’ historic adversity to change, we may find ourselves charged by Venus/Mars in Aries in ways that make us truly enjoy dedicating ourselves to a cause (or several!).  This is especially true if we can see how it benefits us to do so, as the Sun in Aquarius puts our consciousness squarely in the realm of society’s improvement achieved through self-improvement.  And frankly, the causes that matter most to us aren’t likely to hold a little enlightened self-interest against us, so long as it gets the job done.

Astrology of January 5th, 2017: Needing Balance

batik-3-dark-and-light

I wish I could say that today is going to be an easy day, but I can’t.  Given all of the inspiring aspects that we’ve had during the past couple of weeks, the scales had to be balanced some time, and apparently that time is now.  Of course, the scales are getting balanced by an intense series of Lunar aspects hitting our emotions and instincts, so we may wind up feeling mighty unbalanced in the process before the day is done.

The day started off well enough in the very wee hours, with Uranus in Aries trining Juno, the asteroid of covenant relationships in Sagittarius, creating harmony between our individual impulses toward change and our ability to navigate mature partnerships and keep them in alignment with our ideals and personal freedom.  A few hours later, Venus in Pisces conjuncted Pallas in Pisces, enhancing our ability to enjoy navigating the patterns and networks of interconnected ideas in our lives, and to do so with flow and ease, which makes for a nice progression from the Uranus/Juno trine.

Mid-day the tension begins with the Moon in Aries squaring the Sun in Capricorn, which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t followed soon after by the Moon squaring Pluto in Capricorn.  Any time the Moon tangles with Pluto in a challenging aspect, emotions get amped up and we can wind up feeling out of control.  In this case, the Moon being in Aries can lead to fiery tempers under the best of circumstances, and facing down a square aspect with Pluto in Capricorn means that we may find our desires being thwarted by social structures and responsibilities that we would rather throw out the window now.  And following on the heels of the Moon/Sun square, both our conscious and unconscious selves are on alert, which heightens the impact.

The impatience of this Moon is likely to be increased this evening as the Moon conjuncts Uranus, the master of sudden upsets.  Any stability we’ve managed to maintain during this afternoon’s tussle with Pluto is likely to find the rug pulled out from under us, and our emotions may land us on a roller-coaster ride we did not sign up for!  On the plus side, Aries is already a master of anticipating and reveling in newness, so this conjunction could have pleasant surprises in store for us as well.  Of course, it’s followed within a couple of hours by the Moon opposing Jupiter, which magnifies whatever we’re feeling, so at that point whatever ride we’re on is likely to be a big one.

Thankfully, a half-hour later Saturn in Sagittarius gives us something solid to hold onto via a trine to that errant Aries Moon, so the evening ends feeling a little less likely to fly out of our seats!  Late-night tonight is thus a good time to catch our breaths, and feel some support from the Universe after the intensity of the day.

Astrology of December 4th, 2016: Minds and Spirits Alight

air-and-fire-heart-oil-effect

Moon in Aquarius may well have the qualities of the Moon in a place of reason unfamiliar to it that I mentioned yesterday, but don’t think that means boring or stuffy – there’s more than a bit of exuberance today to liven things up, and all of it beneficial!

First, the Moon sextiles the Sun in Sagittarius, and Aquarian air fuels the Sagittarian fire.  There may be a bit of bouncing off the walls this afternoon, until the urge to roam free is satisfied.  The subconcious and conscious minds are both clamoring for a bit of fun today, so why not give it to them?  Both Aquarius and Sagittarius like to be social, to connect with many different minds and ideas, so this is a good day for expanding your horizons a bit and meeting new people.

In the evening, the Moon trines Jupiter, the Greater Benefic of classical astrology and ruler of Sagittarius.  Since Jupiter magnifies what it touches and the trine is the strongest of the supporting aspects, the Moon is bolstered and the best of its experiences and reactions in Aquarius are heightened by Libran social graces, so there is the capacity for both reasonable and enjoyable discussion and interactions that inspire, connecting spirits and harmonizing beautifully.  These are the experiences that heighten our faith in our collective capacity to move forward into a better future.  Aquarius isn’t interested in languishing in recriminations over the past, and Sagittarius’ idealistic fire is happy to play Brigid’s muse to Aquarius’ visions of the future.  Actual poetry may result.  😉

This is followed by an encouraging sextile between the Moon and Saturn, ending the evening on a note of seriousness, of the kind that strengthens and leads to lasting connections as a result of the day’s interactions.  This is the time for like minds to forge the bonds that will help plan and create a better future, whether or not those plans are discussed tonight – right now the tribe needs to gather and feel the sense of shared faith and socially-conscious thought that holds us together.  For a lot of us, we’ve been experiencing too much of the shadow-side of group thought in recent months.  Now is the time to experience the brighter side, fueled by camaraderie and a sense of hopeful possibility, backed up by the security of shared ideals and visions of what the future should be, no matter what fears may cloud the present.  Saturn in particular at this time can help us to be cognizant of those fears without succumbing to them.  And with the Moon internalizing that understanding on the subconscious level, the dreams that result may yield far-reaching insights.  Or at the very least, pleasant anticipation of the upcoming holiday season.  🙂
