Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.

Astrology Update, April 7th, 2017: Questioning Faith

Today started with an early morning conjunction between the Moon in Virgo and the North Node in Virgo, aligning our feelings and instincts with our karmic path and life purpose.  Since not many of us in the Western Hemisphere were awake at that hour and the Moon governs the unconscious, we may have found our dreams imparting clues to our direction during this time, but for those who were actually awake then we may have found ourselves more detail-focused and oriented toward our own growth and health, whether still awake from the night before or just waking up and getting ready to face the day.  Our minds may have been sharper during this time and our focus more practical, applying reason and discernment to practical actions now with potential long-term results.

As the morning progressed, the mental acuity of the Moon/North Node conjunction in Virgo was carried forward by a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Virgo’s ruler Mercury in Taurus, strengthening our mental staying power and helping our minds to act in harmony with our emotions, and vice versa.  Mercury in Taurus is steady, practical, and down-to-earth, so while this isn’t likely to be a time of brilliant insights it was a great time for getting things done that require mental focus and attention to detail, as our instinct during this time was to apply our minds to whatever process was necessary for achieving our aims in the material world.  Those of us waking to tend gardens, farms, and schools were especially favored this morning.

Later this morning the Moon in Virgo squared Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, bringing our logical instincts into conflict with our unconscious belief patterns and especially any need to be “right.”  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on unconscious levels, so we may not consciously realize what is happening, but Black Moon Lilith is very much about surrendering to an experience fully in order to gain the most knowledge from it through feminine receptivity before we can bring that knowledge into consciousness, and in Sagittarius she swims in a fiery sea of philosophical fervor, subjecting us to a bedlam of our own beliefs mixed in with those of others.  When well-aspected this placement allows us to feel where we are and are not in alignment with the beliefs around us as well as the ingrained beliefs we have absorbed from family and friends, but in this challenging aspect we instinctively know that something is not adding up – ideas that are powerfully emphasized both in and around us now are in conflict with the logical, rational mode of being that the previous two aspects of this morning have had us enjoying.  The cognitive dissonance is strong this morning.

The real astrological news of the day, however, is the opposition from the Sun in Aries to Jupiter retrograde in Libra.  Jupiter conveys authority, emphasizes the position of our leadership and our faith in our societal institutions, and when well-aspected helps us to maintain good fortune and a sense of optimism.  In Libra, Jupiter has been helping us to understand both our interpersonal relationships and partnerships, and our desire for social harmony.  Retrograde in Libra, Jupiter has had us reassessing how we maintain peace within our relationships and within the larger social order, and in the recent opposition to Uranus and subsequent square to Pluto, Jupiter retrograde has brought those questions to bear on both how we address the need for personal liberty within relationships and society and how we address the larger forces of institutional power.  The Sun brings the light of consciousness to bear on these issues now, and the opposition increases our awareness, and the tension between our conscious understanding of Jovian concerns and the reassessment of social faith that Jupiter retrograde has been engaged in.  And since Jupiter has a habit of magnifying everything that he touches, our awareness of these social and relationship concerns is likely to blow up into something huge today.  Our faith and optimism are affected today, whether becoming a smokescreen that we hide behind in the face of serious challenges to the social order or our relationships, or being emphasized by their lack, as we reconsider our own fortunes now.  This is in further keeping with the lessons regarding faith and ideals brought forward earlier by the square between the Moon and Black Moon Lilith, as Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and the challenging experiences of that sign that Black Moon Lilith has been submerging us in are now brought to the forefront of our consciousness with this Sun/Jupiter opposition.  And with the Sun in Aries, the right to self-determination is brought face-to-face with Jupiter in Libra’s emphasis on peace at all costs, so that we must come to grips with what degree of personal sacrifice we are willing to accept in the name of social harmony and continued faith in our leaders.

We’ll have plenty of time to stew on these matters this afternoon and evening, with no other notable astrological aspects muddling the mixture until late tonight, when the Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces, and our logic becomes confounded by fantasy and potentially illusion or delusion.  Tonight is a time to be cautious about being led down the garden path, whether by our own desires or the deception of others.  Our instincts will be to follow paths that are reasonable, rational, and factually-based, but our ability to assess what falls into those categories will be greatly hindered by the rose-coloured lenses through which we may view anything that appeals to our more universal or romantic ideals.  We are likely to find ourselves feeling more compassionate and wishing to help others in need, but should be wary of being taken advantage of in the process.  On the plus side, our creative vision and our dreams are enhanced by this placement – artists of all stripes are favored by this placement, and stage performances under this aspect may have a special glow as a result.  But anything requiring logic, focus, and keen mental abilities should be set aside for the night – this is not a time of seeing clearly, and we would do well not to agree to anything with potentially far-reaching consequences, including eating fairy food or accepting drinks from handsome strangers.  😉

Astrology Update, April 5th, 2017: Isolating Beliefs

Today sees few astrological aspects, but those that are happening pack a wallop.

This morning started out very early with the Moon in Leo trining Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius.  Black Moon Lilith operates on the unconscious level like the Moon, but being between the Moon and the Sun, hers is the unconsciousness closest to consciousness, the place where the wisdom that we have gained during receptive times begins to move toward the active world.  These two together can have a powerful effect on our emotions and our instinctive reactions, helping us to move with confidence and decisiveness without over-thinking situations.  Under this influence, we were likely to be more direct, with a greater desire to explore our world and express ourselves within it.  Of course, since this aspect occurred during the wee hours of the morning in the Western Hemisphere, we may have found that the only exploring we were doing was in our dreams, but the lingering effects of this influence were likely to set us off on a strong foot once we did wake up.

Though no notable astrological activity occurs from then until much later tonight, the events of tonight involve forces that we are likely to feel building throughout the day.  First, the Moon in Leo trines the Sun in Aries, which is a lovely aspect of flowing support between our unconscious and conscious selves, made even more potent by this morning’s Moon/Black Moon Lilith trine having effectively primed the pump for wisdom to flow from the unconscious to the conscious mind, and direction and awareness to flow back in return.   With both Luminaries in fire signs, we are oriented toward action and self-awareness now, decisive in our self-expression and filled with energy and vitality.  This is one of the most favorable aspects possible, which we’re going to need to help balance the more discordant energies of both tonight and the rest of the week.

Within 15 minutes of the Sun/Moon trine, Mars in Taurus trines Pluto in Capricorn, putting our focus and drive in a supportive state of flow with our power and sense of control.  This is a potent aspect for achieving what we want in the material world, though with Pluto’s involvement it is best if what we are achieving benefits others as well as us, and doesn’t abuse our own power – when we use Pluto’s power for purely selfish ends the Lord of the Underworld has a way of making us regret the outcome.  This aspect can make us more aggressive and even compulsive, but the trine is the most supportive of aspects, so it is still a helpful influence overall.  This alignment sees our own energy and capability supported by the unseen forces in our lives, and we are able to better navigate between what we can and cannot control, harnessing the determination of Capricorn and the staying power of Taurus to help us persist in the face of adversity.

In combination with boost of feeling and awareness provided by the Sun/Moon trine, that persistence is going to be hugely necessary, both for tonight and in the coming weeks, as tonight’s big astrological news is Saturn stationing retrograde in Sagittarius.  Saturn is the Lord of Karma, the Cosmic Taskmaster, governing time, process, and discipline.  Saturn reveals our fears and insecurities, the places in our lives where we feel we are simply not up to the task before us, and the places where we have failed to live up to our responsibilities.  In Sagittarius, he’s been addressing our beliefs, our willingness to speak our truth, where we fall into strident self-righteousness and refuse to accept or work with the beliefs of others.  During his transit of Sagittarius, our ideals have been sorely tested, and because of his rulership of Capricorn (where Pluto is currently transiting), Saturn tends to do his testing through material means, limiting finances, hitting our jobs and our reputations, or in some cases our health and our literal, physical means of doing things.  Now, he’s stationing retrograde, his movement forward through the sky apparently halted from our vantage point, getting ready to grind back through the lessons of the past few months, and not turning direct again until August.  And as if all of that isn’t enough, Venus retrograde is moving into a square with Saturn that will become exact this Saturday, setting the tone for this Saturn retrograde to impact our relationships as well, and our self-image, not once but twice, since this square will repeat itself later in April once Venus goes direct.

When a planet stations, issues pertaining to that planet are emphasized, and Saturn issues tend to bring about a lot of seriousness, even depression and despair, particularly when squaring Venus.  In synastry, the astrology of relationships, a Venus/Saturn square is a heartbreak aspect, the kind that keep us locked into our hurt because Saturn contacts create longevity, while Saturn’s heightening of our fears and insecurity and deep reserve challenging Venus through the square acts like a wall of ice pushing away affection and connection and love.  We can feel incredibly isolated under the influence of a Venus/Saturn square, and because Saturn’s retrograde starts in close proximity to that square and includes another Venus/Saturn square in late April, that theme of isolation is likely to be emphasized throughout this retrograde.  It is really important during this time to take steps to care for our own emotional needs during this time, and make the extra effort to reach out to loved ones, as we can wind up in some very dark places otherwise.  Unfortunately, we may find ourselves bumping up against all that we haven’t done when it comes to our relationships, all of the ways in which we haven’t been present or have neglected our responsibilities.  We are likely to experience real-world setbacks that have mirrored setbacks in our relationships.  And given the amplification of our feelings under tonight’s Sun/Moon trine and the intensification of our drive under the Mars/Pluto trine, we may feel like we are being pulled in multiple directions at once, wanting to power forward with our passions while simultaneously being forced to put on the brakes.

This retrograde is a time when we need to tend to the process of this intersection between how our material insecurities affect our beliefs and our how both impact our ability to give and receive affection and be in relationship with others.  This is not likely to be an easy time, and the Venus/Saturn square’s influence may well make it a lonely time, but the combined influence of the Sun/Moon trine and the Mars/Pluto trine tonight adding their tone to this retrograde give us some seriously powerful tools for navigating our way through whatever obstacles Saturn is asking us to face.  Though Saturn has a fearsome reputation, especially when he is retrograde, we would do well to remember that the big, bad boogeyman of our solar system bears a six-sided storm at his North Pole, a shape of stability that is numerologically associated with love.  Let that sink in for a moment:  Saturn is crowned with love.  Tough love, to be sure, but still love.  Saturn isn’t out to get us.  He does not throw anything in our path without simultaneously giving us the tools with which to face it.  Saturn is about time and process, yes, and karma and facing the consequences of our actions as well, but most importantly for our purposes now he is about discipline.  He is the classical ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius, one sign known for its persistence and devotion and the other known for its social idealism and pursuit of progress – all qualities worth cultivating.  By respecting Saturn’s process and all that he reveals to us during this retrograde we can cultivate the attitudes and skills needed to face the most challenging circumstances of our lives and in the process more truly understand what we believe and how we love, and forge the beliefs and relationships we most deeply desire as a result.  Saturn may seem a grim teacher, but he is still a teacher, and if we are willing to see him as such, even a friend.

Astrology Update, March 27th, 2017: New Moon in Aries

This morning started off early with the Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius and turning void-of-course, which can make for a dreary and frustrating way to start the day, not to mention a stereotypical Monday morning.  The Moon in hard aspect to Saturn tends to dredge up our fears and insecurities, leading to depression and even despair, or at the very least a sort of numbing sense of restriction.  Combined with the aimlessness of the void-of-course period, this made for a morning where the best course of action was sticking to our routines and not getting caught up in any bold new plans until the morning had progressed a few more hours.

Thankfully, later this morning the Moon entered Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a fresh new start, as Aries is energetic and action-oriented.  Our instincts during this lunar transit are brave and excited about life, interested in exploring new possibilities and treating life as one big adventure.  Though our tempers are a little shorter under an Aries Moon, so are our attention spans, so we aren’t likely to stay mad for long.  We’re also likely to be more straightforward during this time, more impatient and wanting to cut to the chase.  While we aren’t likely to lose all of the altruism fostered under the Pisces Moon, still we are more self-concerned and self-motivated now, seeking to make our mark on the world.  Personal ambitions are highlighted now, as is self-image.  Since Aries is ruled by Mars, physical activity is of greater interest as well – this is a good time to get out and enjoy the spring weather!

Speaking of Mars, the red planet is a player in one of the big astrological events of the day, with Mars in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces.  This puts our energy and drive that is currently operating on practical, material levels in a harmonious relationship with our hopes, dreams, ideals, and spiritual outlook.  This is a time for acting from a place of compassion without losing sight of our own self-interest, and being able to see the bigger picture even while we are engaged in very mundane and physical activities.  This is also a good time for enjoying sensory experience, and for relationships that are both sexual and spiritual, erotic and romantic.  Those of us engaged in esoteric studies are more likely to make good progress now, and those with more pragmatic outlooks may find the view improved by an unexpectedly rosy tint to the day.

To add to that rosiness, the Moon in Aries conjuncts Venus retrograde in Aries this afternoon.  Though Venus retrograde is less certain in her lust for life than when she is direct, still she is active and engaging, warm and affectionate, instinctively desiring companionship but still nobody’s pushover, and our emotions are now following her lead.  This is a time of new crushes and lively flirtation, and perhaps a bit more aggressive pursuit of who and what we desire.  If we’ve been hesitant before about such pursuit, now may be the time that we finally work up the guts to go for it, especially with the Mars/Neptune sextile adding both romantic and practical fuel to our fire.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trines Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, encouraging us to just surrender to the experiences of the day, though since this trine is in fiery signs, that surrender isn’t likely to be passive!  Rather, we may find ourselves happily swept along in a rush of fiery action, spirited and fervent and maybe a little breathless.  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on the unconscious level, so we may not even be aware of this dynamic, only later realizing that we’ve been riding a flame wave that may well have burned through more than a few inhibitions.  Black Moon Lilith is not a tame force by any stretch of the imagination, and following on the heels of the Moon/Venus conjunction and the Mars/Neptune sextile amplifies the erotic charge running through the air this afternoon and into the evening.  If indeed we did take advantage of the impetus from that Moon/Venus conjunction in pursuit of our desires, this Moon trine Black Moon Lilith may take the reins off unexpectedly.  Careful what you wish for…

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries plays out against this backdrop, along with the slowly tightening Jupiter/Pluto square that is currently under less than 1 degree of exactitude and will be exact by the end of this month.  The New Moon is a time for setting intentions to be grown through the lunar cycle, reaching fullness at the Full Moon and then being disseminated into the world as the Moon wanes.  At the New Moon the Moon conjuncts the Sun in the sky, no longer reflecting the Sun’s light but instead bringing unconsciousness and consciousness to work together, with our conscious intentions incubating in the darkness of the unconscious.  Against the backdrop noted above, the drive of both Moon and Sun in fiery Aries is great initiatory power, good for intentions regarding start-ups and bold new changes in our lives, but there is the potential for things to go a little wild in the process.  The encroaching power of the Jupiter/Pluto square reminds us that whatever we are planning is likely to have to contend with the ongoing conflict in our society between the desire for social harmony and the consolidation of power by wealthy and often hidden forces.  Faith and optimism versus greed and corruption.  Socio-political chickens coming home to roost.  No matter how personal our goals now, they are likely to become political, as the American Dream of shaping one’s own destiny is revealed to have been built on a legacy of oppression and lies, and the fable of democracy here drags down others with it abroad.

In addition, Venus retrograde’s reassessment of interpersonal interactions is happening in a sign that is impulsive and not always mindful of consequences, while the Jupiter/Pluto square is brimful with consequences, and since Venus is currently inconjunct the North Node in Virgo, there is a further disconnect between what we desire and the lessons needed by our souls.  On the plus side, Mercury in Aries is moving into a trine with Saturn in Sagittarius (exact in another couple days), so our minds are gaining the strength that comes with recognizing our limitations and the restrictions of reality, and applying Saturnine discipline to overcome obstacles.  This is a strength that we are going to need to set our intentions with this New Moon and make them stick.  This trine also resonates with a wider trine between Saturn and Uranus/Eris, so that our discipline is well aware of the Uranian rebellion and agitation that has been in and out of conflict with both Pluto and Jupiter in recent years, and we have the capacity to calmly work in alignment with the socio-political changes fomenting around us.

Since the ruler of this New Moon is Mars, currently in Taurus in a harmonious sextile with Neptune in Pisces, there is also some chance for our ideals to positively influence our practical efforts in connection with our New Moon intentions.  With Ceres in Taurus as well in a loose trine with Pluto in Capricorn, we should be mindful of how our intentions may nurture and nourish us, quite possibly on a very practical level.  Though the alignments of this New Moon do not create any notable configurations, nonetheless there is an interesting overall dynamic at work here, of balancing what we want versus what the surrounding reality is shaping, and keeping some measure of hope and idealism and even romanticism alive even as reality seems more and more grim.  Aries is a sign whose efforts can seem like a flash in the pan with its eagerness and impulsiveness, but against the backdrop of ongoing transcendental and generational drama and with Aries’ ruler Mars active in fixed Taurus via the Mars/Neptune sextile, there is the potential for a lot more staying power to the intentions we set now than is apparent at first blush.

Astrology Update, March 25th, 2017: Descent Into the Sensual

The Moon in Aquarius turned void-of-course at the time of the Moon/Saturn sextile late last night, so today starts still in this emotional and instinctual limbo state.  However, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere and on diurnal schedules that void-of-course time was likely to play out while we were sleeping, and for those of us awake at that hour sticking to our routines and finishing tasks rather than starting anything new was the best course of action.  Thankfully, the void-of-course period did not last long, as the Moon entered Pisces in the early morning hours, turning our emotions and instincts toward a more sensitive mode of being and perceiving, increasing our compassion and our desire to operate on a more universal level.  We are likely to be more sympathetic toward others during this lunar transit, more in tune with emotions in general, and more intuitive as well.  We have a heightened awareness of victimization now, in both ourselves and others, and may find ourselves more moody and depressive as a result.  Of course, just as easily we could find ourselves more desirous of social connection, more inclined to seek out fun gatherings to swim this sea of feeling with.  Our emotions tend to turn sensual during a Pisces Moon, soft-hearted and kind and touchy-feely, and we may have trouble with interpersonal boundaries now, hard-pressed to say “no” even when we know we should.

Navigating those blurred interpersonal boundaries is likely to be a theme of this day, since shortly after the Moon enters Pisces the Sun in Aries conjuncts Venus retrograde, bringing the light of our consciousness to bear on our modes of connection, what we value and what we take pleasure in, and how we experience and express our affections toward others.  Venus retrograde has been busy reassessing all of that during the past three weeks, trying to suss out how we meet our needs as individuals while connecting with others, and how we show up within relationship in ways that honor our core values and our pleasures.  Now our core consciousness becomes identified with this process, and our attention shines fully on Venusian matters.  More than ever, at this time we want to love and be loved, but with Venus in retrograde we may be more fully aware of all of the ways in which we are not fulfilling that desire.  Questions of self-image and self-esteem are likely to figure prominently today, as well as the ways in which our pursuit of personal fulfillment can put us at odds with our need to connect with others.  Still, the Sun joining forces with Venus tends to be a benevolent influence, even during the uncertainty of a retrograde period, so this can be a good day to simply let our affections shine, regardless of our doubts and occasional stumbles, and enjoy the warmth of our hearts in the springtime.

The Sun/Venus conjunction was followed a few hours later by the Moon in Pisces conjuncting the South Node there, putting our emotions and instincts in a nostalgic and comfortable place, which was not terribly good for accomplishing much toward our souls’ purposes during that time, but which did put us in connection with the skills that we are best at, on familiar ground emotionally.  We may have run into people we haven’t seen in years, especially those with whom we have had strong emotional connections – past loves may have reappeared at this time.  Though the feelings we experienced this morning may not move us forward in themselves, still there it is likely that there was an instinctual awareness that this nostalgia was just that, not a feeling that we could linger in for long nor build on for the future.  Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, and therefore deeply concerned with endings and what we must let go of in order to progress, and that awareness was bolstered during this time.

Toward mid-day, the Moon in Pisces squared Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, setting us a bit on edge unconsciously, bringing the softer side of our emotions and instincts up against our unconscious awareness of potentially self-defeating belief patterns.  Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius sees our drive to learn and grow being hampered by self-righteousness and recklessness, and we may find ourselves mired in events this afternoon that throw the difference between our beliefs and our connection to the larger universe in contrast, but with the Moon in Pisces we are not likely to see that contrast clearly, rather having to muddle our way through these situations without having a conscious understanding of what is going on, with the wisdom of experience growing only in the aftermath.

Still, that wisdom may be forthcoming tonight when Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius joins forces with Venus retrograde in Aries in a lovely, flowing trine.  This is an aspect that brings the Divine Feminine to the forefront, though with the players in question being a dark goddess and a love goddess undergoing an journey of reassessment, we may well have to face some uncomfortable truths about our relationship with that divine feminine.  This aspect smacks strongly of the myth of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar (the divine representation of the planet Venus) descending into the underworld, ruled by her sister Ereshkigal, who decrees that she may enter only “according to the ancient degree” through each of seven gates one gate at a time, shedding an article of clothing at each until she arrived before Ereshkigal naked.  We are in the process of stripping our love down to its bare truth, with nothing to hide behind.  Especially following the square from Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius to the Moon in Pisces, this trine may well bring forth the question:  what must we leave behind to have the love that we desire?  How do we reconnect with our deepest, most loving selves?  And how do we honor both the bright and dark goddesses within?  Black Moon Lilith is deeply connected to the process of surrender, not as a sign of weakness but rather as an acceptance of the power of receptivity.  Human energy operates on a spectrum of active and passive, piercing and receptive, that dualistic views of the universe perceive as gendered, and both patriarchy and much of the effort to overthrow it have too often scorned receptivity in favor of action.  Yet there is no Yang without Yin.  No substance without the space to contain it.  How will we love if we do not make room for that feeling?  Tonight’s trine between bright goddess Venus and dark goddess Black Moon Lilith gives us the space to explore the ebb and flow between the two.

Near the witching hour the Moon in Pisces sextiles Mars in Taurus, reminding us of Venus’ connection to the martial spirit of Mars through the current mutual reception between the two, now slowly moving out of orb as Venus prepares to re-enter Pisces in April.  Our soft and gentle feelings receive support from the steady strength of Mars in Taurus, our spiritual leanings bolstered by our practical focus.  This is a time to take action on our feelings, and to let what we feel temper our actions.  Both Mars in Taurus and the Moon in Pisces are highly sensual, favoring intimacy with those we love, as well as creative pursuits and nurturing care.  This is a night to surrender to loving experience, whether alone or with others, to explore our deepest knowing in the beauty of the physical world.
