Astrology of February 4th, 2017: In Search of Fun

Today, the astrological activity started very early, just shortly after midnight with a trine from the Moon in Taurus to Pluto in Capricorn, creating a flowing, harmonious relationship between our emotions and instincts and the transformations that we are experiencing in our material world.  On an unconscious level at least, we may feel less threatened by the changes that we are having to make because we feel more secure in what remains the same.  For the past couple of days, the Moon in Taurus has seduced us with food and comfort and stability, giving us a much-needed respite from the emotional roller-coaster many of us have been on over the last two weeks, and this trine with Pluto emphasized the results, giving us a greater capacity to meet the extreme and the intense in our lives head-on, knowing our own deep reserves of strength and capability.

Later this morning, the Moon in Taurus sextiled Chiron in Pisces, further emphasizing this sense of stable competence in facing the things that hurt us, helping us to work through the patterns of injuries that we’ve experienced so that we have a clearer understanding of our own vulnerabilities and how to shore ourselves up emotionally to keep from feeling victimized and downtrodden.  This aspect also gives us a great reserve of sympathy for others, so we should apply this feeling to helping others where we can, as this is an opportunity for people to connect with each other through their mutual experiences of suffering and help each other to heal in the process.

Later this afternoon, the Moon in Taurus trines Mercury in Capricorn, starting a void-of-course period that lasts until this evening.  The Moon/Mercury trine gives us the chance to express our feelings comfortably and to make practical plans, but since the void-of-course period is best suited to routine tasks and making corrections in our writing and our environment, this is a good time to apply the alignment between what we feel and what we think and say to finishing up practical tasks and communications that further our goals, rather than embarking on new projects.

This void-of-course period also includes an opposition from the Moon in Taurus to Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, bringing our unconscious awareness back to the intense and mysterious in our lives, and encouraging us to sort out what doesn’t belong and determine to what extent the things that we don’t want to look at may be influencing our feelings from the shadows.  Our instincts are drawn toward these things now, so whether we consciously want to see them or not, they will make themselves known to us.

Later tonight the Moon enters Gemini, making us experience our feelings more through communication and responsiveness to others.  This doesn’t necessarily make us clear the air with regard to our true feelings – under a Gemini Moon, emotion becomes more of an intellectual exercise, and we’re much more interested in talking about it than actually feeling it.  We want things to be fun and social, and all of our instincts are now directed toward that end.  Keep in mind that Gemini is also a bit amoral, mostly because Gemini encourages us to move so quickly that it’s hard to get too concerned with the actual impact of one’s actions under its influence.  Keep in mind that both Donald Trump and Mike Pence are Geminis, and now the frenetic pace of the past couple of weeks starts to make more sense.  Which makes the entry of the Moon into Gemini tonight a blessing, because we are now instinctually better equipped to handle whatever is coming down the pike over the next couple of days, at least in terms of how we feel about it and react to it.  Since Gemini’s ruler Mercury is in earthy, grounded Capricorn, that keeps us from getting too frenetic in the process, but also gives the surface-skimming quality of Gemini the potential to go just a bit deeper than usual, while still not getting too caught up in the details.  Keep in that as is always the case with the Moon’s entry into a new sign, those of us with the Sun in that sign are likely to find ourselves a bit more emotionally volatile than usual, as our conscious self (the Sun) becomes aligned and identified with what we feel and our knee-jerk reactions (the Moon).  This includes the President un-elect.  So, while we all have a greater capacity to keep up with the pace of current events, he is likely to make that pace even more frantic during this time.  Also, since Gemini is particularly interested in communications via technology, we can expect social media to be extra lively now.

On the plus side, the Moon in Gemini’s first act is to make a supportive sextile with Venus in Aries late tonight, ending the night on a social note with all the fire and zest of our pleasures and affections seeking active fulfillment.  Venus in Aries is not a shy and retiring lady, as she may have seemed last month in Pisces.  Our extroverted instincts are making an alliance with Venus tonight to get us what we want, and with our energies continuing their Mars-in-Aries-given boldness, tonight we are set upon making spring come early, no matter what a fat rodent in Pennsylvania has to say about it.  Mind you, since both Gemini and Aries operate very much in the now rather than being particularly concerned with the future, the connections that we make tonight aren’t likely to be long-lasting.  But given the battles ahead and all that we’ve endured thus far, a bit of devil-may-care fun for tonight may well be just the brief dose of energy we need to bolster us for a future that we don’t need to examine too closely until tomorrow.

Astrology of February 1st, 2017: Depth and Heart

Today’s astrological action gets off to a late start, with no significant aspects until this afternoon when the Moon in Aries sextiles the Sun in Aquarius.  The Moon in Aries is headstrong enough that it might be just as well not to throw too many other heavenly bodies in the mix, as Aries isn’t too keen on accepting outside influence or advice, instead wanting to go it alone, full of courage (or foolhardiness) and a pioneering spirit.  Our emotions and instincts may well have done some trailblazing this morning, but could just as easily have bruised a few egos along the way, so the Moon’s sextile to the Sun this afternoon is a helpful reminder of our more social inclinations, and may help us to put our heroic impulses in service of a greater cause.

Later in the afternoon, Venus in Pisces trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, pulling us back out of the wind and fire of Aquarius and Aries for a dip in the dark pool of our intuition.  This is a deeply sensual and knowing influence, when our affections and pleasures take a turn toward the intense, and we may well wonder what hit us.  We are likely to be drawn to the mysterious and the forbidden at this time, and are not likely to take kindly to anyone wishing to hold us back from what we desire.

With Mercury in Capricorn sextiling Chiron in Pisces, whatever the Venus/Black Moon Lilith trine has beckoned us toward is likely to stir up hidden pains, especially those connected to our affections and spiritual yearnings, but the Mercury/Chiron sextile gives us a tailor-made time to give deep thought to what we are feeling and learn from what insights we may discover, and if possible, now is the perfect time to share these feelings with someone we trust.  The combined wisdom and connection that we may gain from such confidences will be well-worth whatever pangs first stirred us to think and speak about them.

Which is a blessing, since the night does not end gently, but dives into a square between the Moon in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, intensifying our emotions in challenging ways.  We may find ourselves in the grip of fears about the larger forces in our lives, our government and other institutions that our current fiery instincts feel confined and oppressed by.  Our hearts are wild, young punks under this influence, railing against authority, while frightening and potentially abusive powers tighten their grip around us.  Our hearts may rage while our minds wonder what the hell is going on, or we may simply feel restless and deeply uneasy without really knowing the source of those feelings, but we should be mindful that they are a symptom of a larger process of transformation that clutches us all, and while tonight’s influence may be fleeting that larger process is something that we must find a way to face for the next several years.

For many of us, this will resurrect our personal demons from the time of the Pluto/Uranus squares that stretched from 2012 to 2015, a time that we hoped we’d left behind us.  This is just a small reverberation from that time, but it carries with it a warning for the future.  The Aries Moon wants us to be courageous, while Pluto in Capricorn brings us face-to-face with our deepest fears regarding our society and authority.  But real courage is not an absence of fear, but rather the willingness to go forward to meet that fear and whatever grim forces have inspired it, and bring some resolution to it whether by battle or by some kinder means.  Now is the time to face what we fear most, knowing our mortality and frailty and the strength of the forces arrayed against us, but not yielding to them without a damned good fight.

In the Pagan year, we have come to the time of Imbolc, a time of purification and testing, when nature determines what is strong enough to survive, and what is too weak to live through the remnants of winter until spring.  The Moon/Pluto square’s influence will pass with the night, but what we learn from it may well continue to hold sway into the future.  Since we are in the first quarter of the Moon now, the lessons that we learn at this time are part of the energy building toward the Full Moon, when whatever wishes we held at the New Moon come to their fullness and are released into the world.  Imbolc is a time sacred to Brigid, the goddess of inspiration and smithcraft, and we will need whatever tempering she bids us endure in facing our fears tonight to fight for our desires in the coming weeks and months, and bring them into reality, no matter the odds.

Astrology of January 31st, 2017: Courage and Decisiveness

The day starts immediately with the Moon in Pisces conjunct Chiron shortly after the witching hour, heightening our sensitivity to our hurts and limitations, whether physical or otherwise.  If we weren’t in bed yet at that time, chances are that we would feel the need for rest and healing strongly at that point, but that awareness of hurt might well keep us awake longer, as Chiron seeks to instruct us through what we are feeling.

A few hours later the Moon squares Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially leading to a depressive early morning, as the challenge from Saturn to our emotions is one of making us feel our limitations and fears and insecurities keenly right now, and following on the heels of the Moon/Chiron conjunction it might be a little rough to take.  On the other hand, we may well find ourselves struggling to feel at that point, as Saturn’s restriction can deaden feelings, especially those already stretched thin and exhausted by the past week of turmoil in the larger world, and the difficulty in maintaining empathy when it seems that battle lines are being drawn between “us” and “them.”

Thankfully, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Pisces later in the morning, and our feelings and instincts become aligned with our affections and pleasures.  We become aware of the sweetness of who and what we value, take comfort in our emotional, physical, and social connections, our sense of the universal and the humanity that brings us together and regenerates the sympathy and empathy between us.

This begins a void-of-course period lasting a few hours, during which the Moon trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, keeping our emotions and instincts attuned to and in harmony with the rejected and marginalized in ourselves and our society.  This mid-day and early afternoon period is a time when we will strongly identify with the underdog on an unconscious level, which is also a collective level.  There is also an instinctual awareness of secrets, and we are likely to be good at obscuring what we feel at this time, even as we sense hidden things under the surface that intensify our own feelings and that of those with whom we are connected.

The Moon enters Aries this afternoon, and the feelings and instincts that were so quiet and sensitive now get an influx of fire.  That secretive and secret-sensing unconscious now wants to get straight to the truth of things, boldly and without hesitation, and is likely to step on some toes in the process.  This is a time to exercise our bravery, to quest for answers and battle monsters along the way, and decisively create solutions in the parts of our lives most in need of them.  And the Universe is going to be kind enough to give us the energy and drive to do it, with Mars conjuncting the Moon in Aries this evening.  All of that fire that has set our hearts ablaze has the classical ruler of Aries, Mars directing it, channeling that spirit and focusing our instincts straight toward whatever demons we need to fight as a result of the introspection of the day.

Close on the heels of Mars charging forward tonight is Mercury in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries.  Our words that seek to be the voice of deep and reasoned thought in pursuit of our goals run afoul of the Great Rebel, the urge toward newness and upheaval, challenging and even tearing down the old in service to the future.  We may find ourselves speaking before we have fully thought things through, or our words may prove to be far more disruptive than we intended.  Our minds may run at a million miles a minute, our attention spans grow smaller, our focused energy and emotion racing to keep up with the pace set by changing circumstances.  We may see unusual trading activity starting this afternoon as a precursor to the exact square this evening, as even the swift Mercury’s contact lasts longer than that of the Moon, and will be felt into tomorrow.  Remember that in addition to governing communication and thought, Mercury is also a god of commerce and financial gain, and luck.  Mercury conjuncting Uranus has our luck turning on a dime, so we need to be prepared for wherever our Moon/Mars conjunction boldness leads us to put up some surprises of its own, and use those Aries instincts and energy decisively.

Astrology of January 29th, 2017: Universal Transformation

The day started with the Moon in Aquarius void-of-course for several hours.  During this time the Moon in Aquarius squared Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, putting our instincts and emotions at odds with hard-won wisdom, revealing secrets and stirring up a will toward rebellion born from a sense of rejection, which is likely to simmer for a while under the void-of-course influence.  In particular, this may put our emotions in a space of uncomfortable confrontation with the marginalized elements of society and our own psyches.  The parts of us that we wish to deny weren’t interested in staying safely hidden out of view, and this is likely to colour our actions moving into the rest of the day.

The Moon entered Pisces mid-morning, moving us out of the more rational space of Aquarius and into greater emotional sensitivity, intuitive instincts, and a feeling of greater connection (or desire for connection) with humanity and the universe as a whole.  We may find our emotions flowing more freely at this time, and more inclined to go in multiple directions at once, and at the same time we may feel a sense of age and even exhaustion, as though we have felt this all before and now wish to resolve and conclude certain feelings rather than continuing to go around in circles with them.

The big astrological news of today is this afternoon’s conjunction between Mercury and Pluto in Capricorn.  Our minds and communication are most concerned now with issues of power, institutions, systems of control, death, and revolution.  We are not likely to be interested in surfaces or frivolous things now, preferring to delve down into the deeper workings of the structures in our lives, and if necessary tear down what isn’t serving us well.  Our goals are likely to get a serious boost of transformative power today, as our minds are operating with intensity and consumed with the larger cycles and transpersonal forces at work in our lives.  Mercury is a trickster god, amoral and at his best when playing with a myriad of elements, and when he plays with giant forces such as these, what is unleashed may well be radically different from what we expect.  He is also a hermaphroditic god, so matters pertaining to gender non-binary folks may well be highlighted, whether drawing power from larger systems or clashing with powers brought to bear against them.  It should be remembered that whatever a transcendental planet such as Pluto touches is likely to be transformed by the experience from the ground up, so our thoughts are not likely to remain comfortable during this process, nor will our minds remain unchanged.

Whatever we experience in connection with the Mercury/Pluto conjunction this afternoon, it is tied to our karmic path, and in particular is likely to deal with past-life issues in need of resolution, as the Moon conjuncts the South Node.  Thus, this day combines heightening our emotional and instinctual awareness of the marginalized in our lives through this morning’s Moon/Black Moon Lilith square with increasing emotional sensitivity and universal awareness due to the Moon’s entry into Pisces, and the Mercury/Pluto conjunction colours the entire day in intense thought and communication surrounding our goals and material structures, systems, and institutions with the Pisces Moon conjuncting the South Node creating one giant impetus to purge the outdated systems of the past that hold us back.  In particular, now is a time for us to reject our own victimization and martyrdom, and move forward with purpose and understanding of our own innate power that cannot be torn from us no matter how dire our circumstances.  This is not a day for remaining complacent, whatever else it may be.

Astrology of January 26th, 2017: Emotional Persistence

The Moon has a busy day ahead of it today, starting in the wee hours of this morning with a conjunction to intensity-increasing Pluto in Capricorn.  Those of us who are night owls (or very early morning risers) are likely to have felt a push to our instincts and emotions during this time, especially in favor of practical action in pursuit of our goals, with a resultant uptick in productivity.

Morning to mid-day sees a string of Lunar aspects, starting with the Moon in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries, which may trigger sudden mood swings, as our emotions are challenged by the ruler of change and upheaval.  We may also experience technological issues, as Uranus governs technology and electricity, and the Moon governs cycles and fluctuations in addition to our emotions and instincts.  Since the Moon operates on an unconscious level, we may find ourselves triggering changes that we did not consciously intend but that we may need (or feel we deserve) nonetheless.  Now is definitely a time to be mindful of the ways in which we may sabotage ourselves in relation to our goals, particularly with regard to distractions, Internet and social media, and burnout, all three of which may be heightened under this aspect.  This is especially true since this aspect is followed by the Moon sextiling Chiron in Pisces, which gently supports us in understanding the areas of our life in which we feel eternally injured and not up to the tasks in front of us.  Chiron in this harmonious aspect with the Moon encourages us to gain and share wisdom surrounding these hurt or stuck places in our lives.

This is followed by the Moon in Capricorn squaring Jupiter in Libra, which is likely to magnify whatever we are feeling.  Since the Moon in Capricorn is not normally comfortable with emotional displays, we may struggle with our feelings as a result, particularly since Libra wants everything to be socially harmonious and Capricorn can have a tendency to say or do things bluntly that can put Libra all a-flutter with anxiety over the resulting potential social discord.  This is a time to perfect the balancing act between following what our instincts tell us to do in pursuit of our goals and mastering the diplomacy that we are likely to need along the way.  Since Jupiter governs luck, we may find our timing is a bit off at this time, so that even if we are normally socially graceful we might find ourselves stumbling a bit more along the way now.  Thankfully, this won’t last long.

This aspect is shortly followed by the Moon sextiling Venus in Pisces, helping those of us who are mindful of potential stumbles to gracefully right ourselves and smooth over any ruffled feelings, should we choose to do so.  We are also more likely to take pleasure in our work at this time if it is truly in alignment with our goals and our values, and may feel more camaraderie with our co-workers as a result.  This influence continues through the afternoon without any further aspects until evening.

Later tonight the Moon in Capricorn sextiles Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, which may generate some intensity in our feelings and responses, but is still a harmonious influence and can add some wisdom and power to our practical pursuits if we are willing to consider some of the mysteries in our lives more deeply.  This is a time of potential insight that we may gain further understanding from sleeping on.  Since this aspect is followed by a sextile from the Moon to Mars in Pisces near the witching hour, the unconscious is already being directed by our energy to make good use of our dreams, and our intuitive capabilities are likely to be enhanced at this time.  Plus, this starts a brief void-of-course period before the Moon enters Aquarius in the wee hours of tomorrow, which also encourages us to fill in missing pieces in our understanding intuitively, so this is an excellent time for editing, correcting, and ferreting out the gaps in our plans as well as any problems in our systems and surroundings in need of remedy.
