Astrology Update, New Moon in Pisces, March 17th, 2018: Cultivating Compassion

The New Moon is a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are in alignment, our emotions and our core needs able to work together in service to a larger vision.  This makes the New Moon a perfect time to consider our goals and set our intentions for this lunar cycle, with the seeds we plant growing into fullness during the next two weeks between now and the Full Moon.

Conjunct to Chiron in Pisces, this New Moon sits closely with our oldest and deepest wounds, asking us to allow ourselves to feel where we hurt, and give ourselves the space and time to understand how and why we came by that injury.  With all three still loosely trined to Jupiter, we may find the floodgates open when it comes to what we are feeling, and secrets spilling forth that we never thought we’d admit to anyone. Yet somehow this is all okay. If we are willing to be compassionate with ourselves and others now (and this trio in Pisces makes it far more likely that we can be), then we may find ourselves relieved to be unburdened of that emotional weight we’ve been carrying around for so long.

With Venus and Mercury both in Aries, our thoughts and desires are oriented toward action, stirring the watery softness of the Pisces Sun/Moon/Chiron with direct and fiery expression.  Venus and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo now, keeping their potential for self-absorption in alignment with our karmic paths – though we may be focused on our personal thoughts and pleasures now, that focus is necessary to help us through the pain coming to the surface during this lunar season and to keep us from wallowing in it or becoming overwhelmed and drowning in feelings of self-pity and martyrdom.

Venus and Mercury are also squaring Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn now, forcing us to come to grips with our most self-defeating obsessions, and bringing an element of tough love into the mix.  Black Moon Lilith calls upon us to apply some objectivity to what we think and how we relate, and now we are likely to be confronted with the need to let some of our desires fall by the wayside in order to accomplish what is most important and necessary for our own growth.

At the time of the New Moon this morning, Mars was in Sagittarius still loosely trining Uranus in Aries, amplifying the fiery need for action and quickness, with the potential to yield sudden insight in connection with pursuit of our goals.  But that also placed Mars square to the Sun, Moon, and Chiron in Pisces, and then a few hours later, Mars entered Capricorn, squaring the Moon again after its entry into Aries near mid-day. This doubles the likelihood of our actions being at odds with our emotions and instincts both today and as we move forward into this lunar cycle.  We may find a degree of frustration with our emotions, impatience to get on with our goals in the real world without our fluctuating moods and injured feelings hindering our ability to get things done on a practical level. This frustration is a foreshadowing of more to come, as Mars moves into a conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn that will be exact on April 2nd but is colouring our actions for a week or so on either side.  Saturn being the cosmic taskmaster presenting obstacles and fears to grind action down to agonizing slowness or even a halt and Mars being our drive and active principle, we need to prepare now for the obstacles likely to hit us around the time of the April Fool’s Full Moon in Libra, lest we find ourselves the butt of a cosmic joke, an emotional Poisson d’Avril.

This is even more crucial given Mercury’s impending retrograde, which will be in full swing by the time of the Mars/Saturn conjunction.  In order to get through the immobilizing effect of that conjunction, we need the lessons of this Pisces New Moon to keep us flexible and forgiving, able to instinctively adapt to what faces us because we are willing to allow and accept our deepest sorrows and sensitivities now.  The time we take this lunar cycle to work through the hurts that we feel holding us back and the compassion that we exercise in doing so are necessary to help us get through more trying times to come. With that compassion bolstering our resolve, we can recognize the possibility for success no matter how insurmountable the obstacles before us may seem, and forgive ourselves for the mistakes and sacrifices that we must make along the way.

Astrology Update, Full Worm Moon in Virgo, March 1st, 2018: Turning the Soil

What intentions we have sown in the darkness of the New Moon now are fully revealed as the Sun’s light reveals the face of the Full Moon.  With the Sun in Pisces conjunct that sign’s transcendental ruler Neptune, and part of a stellium with Mercury, Venus, and Chiron in Pisces as well, our consciousness is fully steeped in intuition and empathy, unusually sympathetic to those less fortunate than ourselves but also more inclined to see with rose-coloured glasses, and thus more easily deceived by our own romanticized vision and the unscrupulous.  With the Moon opposite Neptune, glamor is in high-gear tonight but so is escapism, and with the Moon in communicative Virgo, theatre and movies are especially favored.

With Venus conjunct Mercury in Pisces and both of them trining Jupiter in Scorpio, the glamor and sociability are heightened even more, but with Mars in Sagittarius squaring Mercury and Venus, what we say and what we do may well not match up – we are likely to find ourselves challenged to walk our talk, especially where our ideals are concerned.  Since the Moon in Virgo brings out our most practical instincts and our perfectionism, we may struggle now with the dichotomy between our more selfless leanings and the realities that we bump up against in our desire to connect with and give to others.  Unfortunately, both Virgo and Pisces can have a tendency to play the victim, so we may find ourselves feeling taken advantage of now, whether or not this is actually the case, and may wind up bemoaning our fate more than usual now (or have to listen to others doing so!).  This Virgo Moon is ruled by Mercury, and both emboldened by the trine to Jupiter and embattled by the square to Mars, our minds and mouths may well find themselves biting off more than we can chew, especially if we let our imaginations run away with us, as that pile-up of planets and the Sun conjunct Neptune are wont to do.  It is especially important now to listen well and think before we speak, lest words that we intended to unite wind up dividing instead.

Pluto in Capricorn sextile Mercury can help to steady that imagination now, keeping our thoughts connected to our more practical goals and the structure they can provide, an anchor of determination in a sea of Piscean dreams.  Since the Virgo Moon is an earthy Moon, we are not rudderless in all of that water either.  Virgo is known for its attention to detail in pursuit of perfection, and its dedication to process and growth.  This Moon is known as the “Worm Moon” for its connection to the early spring return of earthworms to turn and renew the soil and feed the birds, and so now is a good time to pay close attention to what our bodies tell us, and tend to our health and nutrition.  Having Neptune conjunct the Sun and opposing the Moon can make it harder for us to clearly see the details that a Virgo Moon normally calls attention to, so it can be helpful now to use Virgoan habits like cleaning, cooking, and gardening as meditative aids, using their structure as a container for all of that Piscean overflow.  Spring cleaning and letting go of things that we no longer need is especially favored now, decluttering our lives in order to have room for our goals to flourish.

There is a monastic quality to the Virgo/Pisces axis that encourages simplifying the mundane life in order to strengthen the spiritual life, tending to the body in order to aid the soul – the original purpose of yoga.  While the Mercury/Venus trine to Jupiter can increase our self-indulgent qualities now, perhaps we would do well to luxuriate in simple things during this Full Moon.  That Jupiter trine in combination with Neptune in hard aspect to both Sun and Moon amplifies our spiritual yearnings now, as well as our faith and trust, despite the challenges of the Mars square, and literally walking the path may be the best way to see it more clearly.  This is a good time to recognize that both forest and trees are worth experiencing, both soil and sea, both in perfect detail and impressionistic blur.  What we choose to communicate about that experience and how we connect in the process may require extra care now, but for the sake of both temporary enjoyment and the longer course of our souls’ journey that care is well worth the time.

Astrology Update, New Moon in Capricorn, January 16th, 2018: Why So Serious?

New Moons are a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned, working together in harmony, giving us a great opportunity to go within and understand ourselves and what we truly want, and then plant seeds of intention accordingly.  With all planets now moving direct and no retrogrades until Jupiter’s retrograde in early March, the seeds that we plant now are especially favored to yield real results, particularly if we are patient and mindful of where our goals fit within the larger plan.

This New Moon occurs at 26 degrees Capricorn, a sign known for its patience and determination, and with Capricorn’s ruler Saturn in this sign along with Pluto, Venus, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith, there is a powerful emphasis on all things Saturnine, including age, time, process, karma, rules, responsibility, limitations, and structure.  There are consequences to the seeds we sow now, and what we grow will take time and patience to cultivate.  Now is a good time to seek the advice of a wise elder, to respect earth-based traditions, tend to our bodies and our bones in particular, and reconnect with the natural world as best we can despite potentially daunting winter weather.

Jupiter in Scorpio sextile to Pluto in Capricorn at this time is part of a repeating pattern for much of 2018, expanding our possibilities for transformation and lending faith and optimism to the process, which are much-needed when facing some of the darker institutional and societal secrets that are being dredged up during Pluto’s Capricorn transit, as well as personal traumas for those of us with planets and luminaries touched by this transit.  This sextile can help us to be real powerhouses in whatever areas of our natal and progressed charts are touched by Scorpio and Capricorn, but it can also amp up the intensity of our experiences there, though being a supportive aspect it is unlikely to yield any dire Plutonian fallout in and of itself.  Since this New Moon, Sun, and Venus in Capricorn sextile Chiron in Pisces, which is also trined by Mars in Scorpio, what hurts are dredged up under Pluto’s influence can yield potent lessons that increase our healing wisdom, compassion, and sense of universal connection, and we are most likely to gain revelations regarding wounds incurred in relation to desire and intimacy.

Mars in Scorpio inconjunct Uranus in Aries during this New Moon makes for sudden surprises that can be jarring to our energy and drive, and with Mars still in orb to its recent conjunction with Jupiter, Mars in Scoprio’s intense focus and motivation continues to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is a time to enlist extra Capricornian caution when driving or engaged in other undertakings in which an accident could have fatal consequences, especially since with both Uranus and Mars in signs that Mars rules, we may find ourselves so focused on our goals that we fail to see potential dangers, or do not give them the respect they deserve.  Since this inconjunct is part of a Learning Triangle with the Sun, Moon, and Venus unexpected lessons are emphasized here, particularly those that call into question our desires and what we do to attain them, with both our conscious and unconscious selves poised to make use of whatever wisdom we may gain from these experiences.  Mars gains the benefit of the sextile to the Sun and Moon in this configuration, making us conscious of our focus and drive while feeling intuitively aligned with that awareness.  But this New Moon and Venus are squaring Uranus, making us equally aware of how tenuous our position is right now.  This is an unsettling aspect, to be sure, and we may find our moods and affections flip-flopping as a result or unusually self-indulgent, sending us in pursuit of newness and excitement with potential frustration and flaring tempers when we find our our desires thwarted.

The Sun, Moon, and Venus all in the last decanate of Capricorn emphasize patient ambition in pursuit of our desires, and Saturn, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith all in the first decanate of Capricorn emphasize patience and persistence even more, with a methodical outlook that transcends temporary fads and is not impressed by Moon/Venus-square-Uranus impulsiveness.  But Uranus in Aries is the height of impatience, eager to start endeavors yet often hard-pressed to keep up the momentum necessary to continue, and we may find ourselves tripping over sudden changes in our feelings and emotional attention-span.  Therefore, whatever seeds of intention we decide to plant at this New Moon, we need to recognize that the dogpile of planets in Capricorn may still give us all of the patience and determination in the world despite whatever emotional surprises the Uranian square may cook up, but they also make it likely that what we choose to pursue now will require much time and tenacity to see to the end, with all-too-many obstacles to test us along the way.

Mercury conjuncts Black Moon Lilith in the first decanate of Capricorn during this New Moon, putting our thoughts and communication in alignment with divine will and giving us a certain degree of emotional distance in our thinking.  Lilith can force us to confront our desires by tempting us with what we cannot attain until we have gained a certain degree of emotional maturity, often learning some very difficult lessons in the process.  There is also a Uranian tone to Lilith’s insights, a primal and electric intuition that is both independent and impersonal, helping us to be more objective about our feelings.  Mercury is also still conjunct Saturn at this time, so our thoughts continue to have a certain gravitas to steady the Uranian influence, and in combination with Black Moon Lilith can create a powerful sense of fatefulness in our ideas and communication now.  Mercury in Capricorn carefully brings together all of the facts to bear upon a subject before arriving at any conclusion, creating an impression of slow thoughtfulness that can be mistaken for a lack of mental dexterity, yet in fact Mercury in Capricorn’s methodical thought-process repeatedly yields the right answer.  If we need to carefully think through all aspects of a plan before making any decision, and do so with mindfulness of the long-term consequences of whatever decision we will make, this Mercury transit is the time to do it.  There is the potential for the Saturn/Mercury/Black Moon Lilith conjunction to yield a somewhat bleak and depressive outlook if we let Saturn’s influence become more weight than motivator, so sensitive souls would do well to remember that and keep a sense of humor on-hand to balance out such a hefty dose of Saturnine seriousness.

Astrology Update, May 1st, 2017: Unquiet Moods

Early this morning the Moon in Cancer opposed Pluto in Capricorn, increasing our emotional awareness of the hidden forces in our lives and intensifying our feelings.  We were instinctively drawn to experiences that stirred up the deepest parts of our subconscious, causing us to act impulsively and compulsively, and may have found ourselves in conflict with those closest to us as a result.  Our most complex emotions may have worked their way to the surface during this time, including those we would rather have remained buried, such as jealousy, guilt, or a desire for control over the actions and emotions of others.  Since we were not likely to be thinking clearly at this time it was not a good morning for drawing any conclusions about what we were feeling, though thinking about the events of the morning with a clearer head later on may have yielded useful insights about parts of our psyches we don’t normally confront.  For those still asleep during this time, our dreams may have been disruptive and disturbing, and upon awakening we may have had a rough start to the morning as a result.

Toward midday the Moon in Cancer squared Mercury retrograde in Aries, putting our thoughts and emotions at odds, and making it difficult to communicate with others without conflict or misunderstanding.  We may have wanted very much to express our feelings during this time but found it difficult to do so in ways that others could relate to.  Or we may have held back on expressing what we felt but found ourselves behaving in antagonistic ways toward others as a result of our frustrations regarding what we felt unable to express.  And since others around us were experiencing similar frustrations, the early afternoon could have been a very tense time indeed for all concerned.  Our opinions were likely to fluctuate greatly during this time as well, increasing the likelihood of misunderstandings and confusion, and it was not a good time for decisiveness as a result.

A short while later the Moon in Cancer squared Uranus in Aries, increasing the volatility of our emotions and our instinctive reactions.  We may have felt restless and uneasy, easily upset, and may have found outer circumstances mirroring our inner disquiet through sudden changes and distressing interactions with others.  A sense of contrariness was stirred up by this aspect, leading us into disagreements solely because we are fed up with the status quo, wanting to upset the apple cart just to see what will happen.  We were likely to feel a bit reckless and experimental, aggressively devil-may-care and craving excitement and something, anything different, and anyone making emotional demands on us or otherwise restricting our freedom during this time was not likely to be looked upon kindly, even and perhaps especially those to whom we normally are closest.  This period started a void-of-course period lasting until much later this evening, so while that might help to minimize the long-term damage it also decreases our ability to think clearly, and we would do well to stick to our routines during this time, as the frustration and impulsiveness of the Moon/Uranus square wears off.

The Moon in Cancer trines Chiron in Pisces during the void-of-course period, increasing our capacity to reflect on the reasons for our distress as the night progresses.  We are in a better position to communicate what we feel with others during this time, especially when it comes to our sensitive quirks and hurt feelings, and we can have more compassion for both ourselves and others close to us tonight.  We are also better able to learn from our mistakes now, especially those involving deep emotions and our friends and family, and there is a real capacity for healing our wounds in the company of others tonight.

Late tonight the Moon enters Leo, moving away from the moodiness and sensitivity of the past couple of days and into a more exuberant and expressive state.  This is the time in the lunar cycle when our unconscious need is to be seen and heard, a time when our feelings take center stage and our instincts urge us to assert our own importance.  While this can lead some to become overbearing, it can also increase our passion, our creativity, and our conscious awareness of what we feel and our right to feel it.  We are far less likely to hide our feelings in the shadows during this transit, so emotions that we’ve been keeping under wraps will tend to out themselves now.  Our pride comes to the forefront now, and that can be a good thing, so long as we are willing to be gracious with others similarly feeling their own worth.  Thankfully, a leonine Moon is more magnanimous, more benevolent, and more willing to bestow the light of our own best feelings on those who do not tread too thoughtlessly on our domain.  Woe betide those we feel wronged by during this time, however!  The lion is not known for mercy toward its foes, and even the mousiest among us may roar now if we feel so stirred.  Still, most of us would much rather indulge in enjoyable feelings during this transit, and it can be a wonderful time for socializing and sharing what is best in ourselves with others in whom we appreciate similar expressions of magnificence and pride.

Astrology Update, April 30th, 2017: Pain, Belief, and Vulnerability

The skies are quiet today until this afternoon when the Moon in Cancer sextiled the Sun in Taurus, putting our conscious and unconscious selves in harmony, our emotions in support of our core truth and our psyches attuned to our feelings in turn.  This aspect makes everything run a little smoother, interactions with others a little more harmonious, our inner and outer worlds working together.

All of which is a much-needed blessing in view of the square between Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius and Chiron in Pisces that became exact this afternoon but has been building for the past several days, with an emotional preview yesterday, and which will continue to colour our experiences for the next week to come.  Saturn in hard aspect to Chiron is harsh no matter how you colour it, with Saturn’s restrictiveness rubbing up against our deepest and oldest wounds, but this particular iteration includes Saturn in retrograde, dredging up all of our old injuries that we would rather deny but have never managed to escape from, and shackling our hope of healing from them to our most deeply entrenched belief systems.  Intergenerational family trauma, racial and cultural trauma, ancient abuses and buried grief and anger are all creeping out of the woodwork during this transit, and the pain is both real and at the same time hard to pin down.  The very things that give us our roots and sense of connection to history and humanity are poisoning and crippling us, and today we come face to face with all of the horror and sadness and helplessness they have bequeathed us.  Somehow, we have to overcome our sense of alienation and understand the universality of our limitations, and learn to heal ourselves by reaching out with compassion toward others, even and sometimes especially the others “responsible” for hurting us.  Forgiveness is not about giving abusers a free pass, but rather about halting the toxic internalization of what has been done to us and continues to be done through us.  There is wisdom to be found here, but it is a bitter draught.  This is not an easy path to healing, and it’s going to take all of our discipline and much time to traverse, as well as the ability to think outside of the box about how we share the hard-won knowledge born from our pain, but it is a necessary path if we are to move forward and survive and maybe even thrive, both as individuals and as a species.

Tonight the Moon in Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces, reminding us of the universality of deep feeling and giving us a chance to swim in our sympathy and imaginations, and reconnect with those we love in the midst of the pain that has so much potential to divide us.  This is an emotionally healing aspect that stimulates our creativity and intuition, and invites us to spin new stories about our experiences that join us together in a safe and loving emotional space.  This is not a time for decision-making or rational thinking, but rather a time to be receptive and spiritual, safe in our homes and familiar spaces, a time to float in our fantasies and visions of our best possible world with those who can share those visions with us, and let our ability to imagine better lives lead us to them.

That said, late tonight the Moon in Cancer squares Jupiter retrograde in Libra, leading us back into a space of reconsidering our close relationships and social connections, as well as our faith and our cherished beliefs.  This day is not going to release us without challenging how we meet others with our feelings, daring us to crack open our own hard shells and be vulnerable with our biggest emotions.  Since Jupiter is a benevolent influence, this is not an unkind aspect, despite its challenges, but it can magnify whatever we feel and make it hard to take a step back or be rational about it all.  Details are not likely to be our strong suit now, and we feel drawn to delve further into our philosophical and spiritual ties with others.  Tonight we are likely to want to know what it all means, and we want to be able to share our searching with others who matter most to us.  And if our spiritual family or community doesn’t line up with our actual family and community, now is the time when we will be asking ourselves why.
