Astrology Update, April 23rd, 2017: Emotional Bruising

This morning began with Mars in Gemini squaring the North Node, making this a day when our soul’s path is challenged by our ever-changing and curious energies.  We may find that today our ambition and drive is more exploratory than willing to dedicate itself to the details of whatever process will further our growth most.  We may find that the things we want to learn require more energy than we are able to expend right now, that the next steps in our progression will take more time than anticipated, and we have to find a way to come to a compromise between what we want and what we need.  Or we may start early with an abundance of energy and discover partway through that our plans were too ambitious, and we’ve exhausted ourselves before we can consider ourselves even close to done.  We may find ourselves bumping up against countless small frustrations and have to battle our own tempers to get through the day.  Whatever forms the challenges of this aspect take, this is the kind of testing that can strengthen our resolve and hone our skills in unanticipated ways, well worth working through despite any temporary pitfalls.

Toward midday the Moon in Pisces conjuncted Chiron in Pisces, increasing our emotional and instinctive responses to old wounds and sensitivities.  Our limitations may loom large in our feelings now, and we may feel a sense of inevitability and helplessness in the face of our own shortcomings.  We are likely to be instinctively drawn to situations or people who bring up these issues in us, but also have a greater capacity to work through these issues with the help of trusted friends and loved ones now.  Or we may find ourselves being the voice of wisdom and reassurance for others who are undergoing struggles that resonate with our own, as our weaknesses are revealed to be not merely personal but in fact universal.

Whatever encouragement we may gain from connecting with others over mutual hurts will be needed as we move into the afternoon, when the Moon in Pisces squares Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, and our emotions may turn colder, our fears loom larger, and our limitations seem more insurmountable.  This aspect can be deeply depressive, or simply restrictive, binding us to the demands of time and realism when we would much rather enjoy a kinder sense of connection with the Universe.  We may feel our mortality more now, or the troubles of the world at large, and now is a time when our more sympathetic feelings can turn against us, making it harder to endure the less charitable attitudes we may encounter from society, potentially leading to a deep sense of isolation during this time.

Thankfully, a short while later the Moon conjuncted Venus in Pisces, and the coldness and isolation had a chance to be relieved by the sweetness of sympathetic connection.  Our affections were gently stirred by this aspect, and we were likely to take refuge from Saturnine coldness in pleasurable fantasies and perhaps a bit of sensual indulgence.  Our love of beauty and art may have been stimulated during this time, our emotional yearnings seeking sensory reinforcement with spiritual overtones.  Of course, after enduring the heightened sense of our own frailty gripped in the hand of fate during the last two aspects, we may have been inclined to go a bit overboard with self-indulgence during this time, but it’s just as likely that we were happy to share that indulgence if given half a chance, unless the combined forces of the Moon/Chiron conjunction and Moon/Saturn square proved too much to bear in the company of others, in which case a little introverted self-care could hardly be begrudged.  Since this aspect began a void-of-course period lasting a few hours, this could be the perfect time to retreat into quiet contemplation of all that has happened during this Pisces transit, letting go of the hurts that can no longer instruct us while taking the necessary steps to soothe our hearts and reconnect with the more loving side of the Universe.

Tonight the Moon enters Aries, moving our feelings out of the soft and tender realm of Pisces into a bolder and more adventurous space.  The Moon in Aries starts the circle of the zodiac anew, taking the leap of faith off the cliff and into a heightened sense of wonder and possibility.  Our emotions and instincts are more passionate now, more demanding, more attuned to our own wants and needs and not shy about meeting them.  We are more emotionally aggressive, potentially more quarrelsome at times as well but unlikely to hold a grudge even if tempers do flare, as there is too much to see and do in the world to waste time on hard feelings.  Our moods may turn on a dime accordingly, and we are not likely to sustain any one feeling for long during this transit.

That sense of quickness and chasing after new experiences is heightened later tonight as the Moon in Aries sextiles its ruler Mars in Gemini, increasing our feelings of adventurousness with a questing and inquisitive energy that urges us to try everything.  We may experience a sense of recklessness and our attitudes are likely to be more devil-may-care.  Thankfully the sextile is a harmonious aspect, but there is still the potential to go a little overboard in our zeal as we seek out the situations and experiences that are the proving grounds for our fighting spirit.  Chances are that there will be more than a little sociable sparring going on tonight, as our egos jockey for position in whatever arena our hearts favor, but given the supportive nature of the sextile, it is more likely to be in fun than fighting in earnest, with little damage that can’t heal by morning.

Astrology Update, April 18th, 2017: Mood Swings

In the early morning hours today the Moon in Capricorn squared Jupiter in Libra, amping up our emotions and putting our driven instinctive responses at odds with our more optimistic social tendencies.  For most of us in the Western Hemisphere, this aspect was in play while we were sleeping, but for the very early risers or those very late to bed, we may have felt that our faith and perseverance were challenged, and our relationships may have been tested in the process.  That said, Jupiter is still a very benevolent influence so our feelings overall during this time were likely to be good, but it is also likely that we were less inclined to see the nitty gritty details in our lives at this time, preferring to take a grander approach, and as a result we may have tended toward a bit of off-putting arrogance or devaluing of details that mattered to others, convinced that we had the one true philosophy of life and subtly (or not-so-subtly) communicating that in our attitude.

A few hours later Mercury in Taurus trined the North Node in Virgo, putting our minds at least back on a more detail-oriented track.  Mercury is currently retrograde, putting it between the Earth and the Sun, and Mercury’s influence was also extended at this time through its rulership of Virgo, so matters of thought, communication, travel, and technology were emphasized on this day, particularly in relation to manifesting our soul’s purpose in the material world.  Health matters were also emphasized, and it is possible that we could achieve real progress in regard to a health-related issue as a result of insights and communication on this day.

Shortly thereafter the Moon in Capricorn conjuncted Pluto, intensifying our emotions and bringing hidden things to light, including obsessions and compulsions.  During this time our real feelings were more likely to come to the surface, even those we thought deeply buried.  This was a time to watch out for power games, especially in our close relationships, and to recognize that where we may have felt out-of-control was likely to be indicative of deeper concerns to be explored on a more long-term basis once the transit has passed and we do not feel so overwhelmed.

The skies quieted down for the afternoon, until the Moon in Capricorn squared Uranus in Aries during the evening, increasing the likelihood of sudden upsets and changes, as the Moon’s unconscious cycles connected with and potentially exacerbated erratic Uranian energy.  We may have found ourselves unexpectedly more awake and restless at night, even hyperactive.  We are also likely to feel more impatient and contrary, inclined to disagree with people more out of a sense of contrariness than actual disagreement.  Technological troubles were a distinct possibility at this time.

A few hours later the Moon in Capricorn sextiled Chiron in Pisces easing up on some of the more distressing feelings of the previous two aspects and giving us a chance to assess some of our more difficult feelings with sympathy and compassion.  This would have been a good time to talk with a friend about our troubles, whether just sharing our own feelings or commiserating over mutual difficulties, as discussion of our pain at this time can be especially useful in yielding insight from others who have experienced similar situations.

Late that night the Moon in Capricorn sextiled Venus in Pisces, bringing Venus’ gentle connective power to support our emotions, and further emphasizing the enjoyment we may gain from being with friends and people we love.  Entertaining at home was especially favored by this aspect, and relationships in general got a loving and supportive boost at this time.

Astrology Update, April 16th, 2017: Connecting Wisdom and Growth

Today the Moon in Sagittarius got things started with this morning’s trine to Uranus in Aries, setting a speedy tone for the day with the Moon’s unconscious urge toward action and liveliness joining forces with Uranus’ will to sudden change and impulsiveness.  Since this was a harmonious aspect, this boost in activity was likely to be benevolent whether we rode along with it or simply observed the action from the sidelines, but it wasn’t likely to make for a boring time either way.

Shortly afterward, Mars in Taurus sextiled Chiron in Pisces, lending a practical energy to our learning and our understanding of our own weaknesses and limitations while bringing compassion and wisdom to our actions.  Today we are likely to have had more sympathy for illness and more active interest in matters of health.  We are also likely to be more persistent about getting to the roots of health problems or resolving paradoxes, and alternative health fields of study are favored at this time.

Later this morning the Moon in Sagittarius squares Chiron in Pisces, challenging this exploration of our patterns of health and injury with emotional and instinctive reactions that would rather have fun and not examine such potentially depressing patterns too closely.  We may have found ourselves feeling impatient with our own limitations or those of others this morning, or may have found that the truth of our situation when it comes to our health and our psychological sensitivities bumps up against deeply ingrained beliefs, particularly those shared with families and other groups.  We may have felt highly attuned to the tensions at the intersection of what we feel in relation to our health and the patterns of belief shared with others, and may have found those tensions coming to a head today.

A short while later the Moon in Sagittarius trined the Sun in Aries, renewing some of the lively energy from the early morning and putting our conscious and unconscious selves in harmony.  Our instinctive reactions worked along our conscious intentions today, making it easier for us to do what we truly wanted, and helping us to disseminate the intentions that we set at the New Moon and brought to their peak at the Full Moon.  Since both Luminaries are operating in fiery signs, this was definitely a time best devoted to action and creative, spirited endeavors.

However, a few minutes later the Moon in Sagittarius squared Venus in Pisces, and our emotions and instincts bumped up against our desire for connection and pleasure.  We may have wanted to take action but found ourselves enmeshed in lazier desires, feeling simultaneously energetic yet also slow and sensual.  We may have sensed a need to take connections slowly, yet found our instinctive responses to be too rushed, our timing off.

Around mid-day, the Moon conjuncted Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, and our mood may have turned more somber as a result, though not unbearably so.  Rather, we were likely to have seen where we needed to respect our limitations and those of others, and may have found ourselves more willing to shoulder responsibilities even in the midst of fun.  We may have also found ourselves more emotionally invested in our beliefs, particularly those that define us as part of a group, and were more likely to assert our emotional and philosophical boundaries at this time.

This aspect started a lunar void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, during which we were best off falling back on routine and allowing our unconscious to float in a state of receptivity, quietly processing the lessons of the Moon’s transit through Sagittarius before the Moon entered Capricorn early this evening, and since Saturn is Capricorn’s ruler, the Moon/Saturn conjunction that began this void-of-course aptly paved the way for us to react and feel with more seriousness and determination.

During this void-of-course period, Venus in Pisces conjuncts Chiron in Pisces, putting our affections in touch with our deepest hurts and those of others.  Since Venus is slower moving than the Moon, this influence sticks with us for a while, lingering into tomorrow.  This has us moving forward with the knowledge gained from Venus’ retrograde period of introspection, connecting with others through shared sympathy and compassion for each others’ hurts.  The wisdom that we have gained through painful learning experiences may seem like it can’t much help us, but it can be a great solace and aid to others now enduring similar situations.  The sharing of such wisdom then becomes a source of deeper connections between us.  Since Pisces is eldest sign, we may be again confronted by what we need to let go of in order to have the caring and wise connections that we most desire.  These connections can take on spiritual overtones, and during this transit we are more likely to see how they can have long-term impact on our lives and the lives of others around us.

The Moon’s entry into Capricorn tonight takes the seriousness of Saturn in Sagittarius and applies it to our most important goals, from the unconscious point of view.  If what we want consciously differs greatly from what we want consciously, that can pose some problems, but the Moon/Sun trine earlier today brought our conscious and unconscious desires into alignment, so chances are that what we get emotionally serious about during this transit will resonate on both conscious and unconscious levels.  Capricorn embodies determination, so we may find ourselves becoming more focused in our reactions during the next couple of days, less easily deterred from what we want.  We are likely to assert more persistence now, particularly in relation to our long-term goals, especially those focused on career and reputation, but really during this transit what matters most is what our hearts align with – nothing else will muster the same fervent devotion, and that heart alignment isn’t likely to be a matter of gushy love and flowers but rather what speaks deeply to our core being and our ancestral pride.  Capricorn is deeply traditional and the Moon is instinctual, so our emotions and reactions during this time will come straight from our roots.

More of that old soul feeling came tonight through the sextile of Venus in Pisces to Mars in Taurus, which is also in effect through tomorrow, and brings along with it a kindly and comfortable feeling that enhances sensual and sexual connections, and helps to keep our energy levels at a steady, even flow.  During this aspect our sympathies have more fortitude, our actions more kindness, and our appreciation of and desire for creature comforts, preferably shared with those who touch us on a spiritual level as well as practical and physical levels. We are likely to be a bit gentler with each other during this transit, yet not pushovers, as our compassion is balanced by our practicality.

A short while later tonight the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing more of that practicality into play but now applying it to what our souls most need.  Our ability to work with and resolve our karmic lessons gained the attentiveness and persistence of Capricorn, who is ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Karma, and the self-discipline associated with him has now come through on an instinctive level, our feelings attuned to whatever will most serve our souls’ needs tonight.  Shortly thereafter the Moon in Capricorn trines Mercury in Taurus, forming a Grand Earth Trine that pulls in our steady and practical mental capabilities into the circuit created with the North Node.  Our minds and emotions are put in harmony by the aspect, and working united with our souls’ learning process due to the configuration with the North Node, tapping into cardinal, fixed, and mutable earth energies simultaneously, and channeling the power of all three into what most needs doing in our lives.  This is a time when we can make incredible progress in our souls’ growth, putting the formidable power of our most practical thoughts and instincts to bear on working through our karma and living up to our souls’ purpose in this lifetime and those yet to come.

Astrology Update, April 13th, 2017: Changing Perspective

This morning the Moon in Scorpio sextiled Pluto in Capricorn, giving support from the transcendental ruler of Scorpio to our instincts and emotions traversing the deep oceanic realms of Pluto’s home sign.  Pluto’s transit through Capricorn emphasizes pragmatism and determination, and in aspect to the Moon in Scorpio gave power and fortitude to our feelings this morning.  We may have felt better equipped to navigate the realms of the powers-that-be at this time, less at odds with the forces that we cannot see and more able to hold our own when dealing with institutions during this transit.

The skies have been quiet for the rest of the morning and the afternoon, but now we get a flurry of lunar activity tonight.  First, the Moon in Scorpio opposes Mars in Taurus, pitting the classical ruler of Scorpio against his home sign.  We may find ourselves feeling emotionally stuck, or find that our physical energy doesn’t match our emotions or our instinctual reactions.  Some of us may find our energy amped up by this aspect, while others will feel drained.  Tensions may be increased by this aspect and tempers may flare, but since these are both fixed signs conflicts are more likely to center on issues of stubbornness, and are not likely to erupt quickly – if there is enough tension to cause an open quarrel, chances are that it’s been building for a while, and tonight is just a symptom rather than a cause.

A few hours later the Moon in Scorpio trines Chiron in Pisces, and we are able to more easily ferret out the causes of our sensitivities, the sources of old wounds.  We have the emotional courage now to face our weaknesses and patterns of trauma, and gain both deep understanding of our own wounds and compassion for the injuries of others in the process.  Chiron in Pisces has the wisdom of an old soul, able to discern the larger cycles of what we feel in the depths of the Scorpionic oceans, while also possessing a certain stoicism about our pain.  The Moon in Scorpio is not normally particularly eager to talk about matters of personal weakness, but this alignment can help put our perspective into the Scorpionic realms of psychology and occultism while maintaining the healing, sympathetic instruction of Chiron, and get us to open up about the hurts we have in common where we otherwise might not.

An hour later the Moon in Scorpio trines Venus retrograde in Pisces.  This creates a beautiful flowing state between our feelings and our affections, our instincts and our pleasures, combining the focus of Scorpio and the gentleness of Pisces, and reinforcing the spiritual leanings of both.  We may feel more compassionate and sympathetic at this time, more kindly and affectionate, but with the strength of Scorpio keeping us from turning into complete pushovers.  This starts a lunar void-of-course period that lasts until early tomorrow morning, so this is a good time to float in the emotional waters and find some companionable pleasures that don’t stray too far out of our comfort zones to fall back on, staying away from any significant new projects as we allow our receptive unconscious to process the lessons of the Moon’s transit through Scorpio and get ready for the more active emotional state of the Moon in Sagittarius.

And in keeping with the fire of the upcoming Sagittarian Moon, the big astrological news of tonight is the Sun conjuncting Uranus in Aries, no doubt making it hard to stay quiet and receptive during the void-of-course period.  Uranus tends to be an agitating force, even in supportive aspects, and while the conjunction can sometimes be favorable it is still a hard aspect.  Frustrations stirred up during the Moon/Mars opposition earlier may come into play again as the night progresses, especially when they relate to areas where we feel trapped or stuck.  Tonight we are likely to be unusually headstrong, willful, and unwilling to compromise when it comes to our own freedom.  We may experience sudden changes tonight, including technological breakthroughs, and this aspect favors those of us working in experimental fields.  Keep in mind however, that we may just as easily experience sudden disruptions, technological changes or glitches that throw our lives into an uproar, whether temporarily or more long-term.  Though these may seem to come out of nowhere, those of us who have been stuck in some portion of our lives have probably had the disruptive urge building for a while, and are only becoming conscious of it now.  Tonight is a night for the kinds of surprises that impart intuitive knowledge, and can have a long-term impact if we allow ourselves to see how such changes fit into our lives and where such disruptions could be just what the doctor ordered.

Astrology Update, April 8th, 2017: Isolation and Control

Today starts out with a late-morning trine from the Moon in Virgo to Pluto in Capricorn, bolstering our instinctive responses with a sense of power and control, and the feeling that the hidden powers in our lives have actually got our backs at this time.  We are better at ferreting out hidden information at this time, especially in relation to practical matters, and have a greater sense of determination now.  Our goals may seem clearer as well, and we are likely to pursue them with a fervor, and our feelings may intensify as well during this time, though the supportive flow of the trine makes that intensity an asset now.

This afternoon that intensity gains focus with a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Mars in Taurus, taking the emotional power generated by the Moon/Pluto trine and funneling it into our energy and drive.  Since these signs are also earth signs, this is a very practical energy, steady and secure.  We are not likely to move quickly under this influence, but the actions that we do take are firm and clear, and oriented toward growth and process.  We have a greater sense of how our actions fit into a course of progress, and can methodically take the steps that we need to manifest what we desire in the material world.

However, this afternoon also sees a square from Venus retrograde in Pisces to Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, which may impart a sense of coldness to our interpersonal connections now, and a degree of insecurity in how we relate to others.  Feelings of depression and isolation are heightened now, and we may find ourselves behaving more brusquely without even intending to or knowing why.  Things we have previously taken pleasure in may now seem dissatisfactory or frivolous, and we may take a dismal outlook on our own values now, questioning why things matter to us, or even if they matter.  We may limit our own indulgences now, unwilling to waste time on lightheartedness, yet our practical, serious orientation may also suffer from a certain discontent, as our more affectionate side questions why, why must we submit to this isolating, restrictive mood?  We simultaneously feel the need to exert discipline over ourselves even as we struggle with the joyless feelings this invokes.  Since both Venus and Saturn are retrograde now, this challenging aspect invokes the need to reconsider how we contribute to our own isolation, when we must remove ourselves from things we find fun in order to tend to our responsibilities, and how to keep the balance between our isolating discipline and our pleasurable affections, and where they need to mix.  Not an easy mixture to be sure, but good boundaries can enhance our ability to relate to others, not just dampen it, so this is a necessary lesson.

Tonight the Sun in Aries squares Pluto in Capricorn, and the tension of the Venus/Saturn square gets an added tension to contend with, as our conscious urge toward self-determination is challenged by the hidden forces in our lives, the powers-that-be clamping down on our ability to step fully into the adventure of our lives.  We may find our fight-or-flight response stirred up by this aspect, making us either more contentious or more avoidant, depending on what fears the influence stirs up.  We may find ourselves forced to confront endings or transitions that we would rather avoid, secrets coming to light in especially disruptive ways, and we may find ourselves feeling out of control as a result, potentially making some of us scramble to regain that control and setting us at odds with others in a similar state of unease.  We are likely to find ourselves drawn to intense situations that bring out these feelings, even if we want to avoid them (and sometimes especially when we want to avoid them!).  Conflicts are more likely to erupt tonight, and those of us in already abusive situations may find those coming to a head at this time.

Later tonight the more emotional after-effects of today’s two big squares are likely to make themselves known, with the Moon in Virgo opposing Chiron in Pisces putting our more rational instincts in conflict with our deep, inner hurts.  We may be made more aware of the patterns of injury that we subject ourselves to in the aftermath of the Venus/Saturn and Sun/Pluto squares, as Chiron forces us to feel these wounds deeply.  Since the Moon in Virgo is ruled by intellectual Mercury, this is not a lunar placement that is comfortable with these kinds of deep feelings, so this can be a difficult awareness, as we try to balance our rational feelings with a sense of injury that we don’t know how to heal for ourselves.  Navigating through this period successfully is aided by talking through things with people we trust, or for those of us who don’t have that option doing journaling and a lot of self-care, particularly with regard to our bodies, as the Virgo Moon finds it easier to deal with emotional health through the vehicles of mental and physical health.  This is also a time to be conscious of how our current experiences fit into our long-term patterns of growth, as Virgo is attuned to cycles of growth.  Above all, we should endeavor to be compassionate with ourselves and others tonight – this is a day when we are processing a lot of powerful information about ourselves and our ability to relate to others, which can give us long-term insights that extend far beyond ourselves and our immediate circumstances, and choosing to confide those experiences tonight can help effect deep healing for ourselves and others if we are willing to admit to and try to understand our pain.
