Tarot for December 8th, 2016: Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups is back again, a very short while after her most recent appearance here.  Given the day’s astrological emphasis on fire that might need some water to keep it in check, as well as the afternoon’s conflict between emotion and logic, we don’t need to look far for reasons for her to appear again so soon.

The Moon in astrology being associated with both our emotions and our subconscious can reinforce the notion that what we feel is more suited to staying in the background, and with today’s potential for what we feel to set off arguments or other socially discordant situations, we may wind up bottling up what we feel in order to minimize the damage of foot-in-mouth syndrome.  But bottling our emotions up isn’t really the answer, even when it may be expedient.  Especially when relations between mind and heart are testy, the Queen reminds us that we need to let ourselves feel what we feel as fully as possible in order to be in a better position to clearly understand and communicate our moods without letting them dominate us from behind-the-scenes.  Sweep enough stuff under the rug and pretty soon you wind up tripping over what’s under the rug!

Knowing what we feel by allowing ourselves to truly experience our feelings and be present with them keeps us from falling into the historically destructive delusion that heart and mind must remain separate.  Today is a day that will especially benefit from taking time for meditation and self-care, allowing what we feel to flow through us without staying stuck in any particular emotion.  The Queen of Cups can guide us in exercising our intuitions so that we know when best to take extra time and space to fully experience and understand what we are feeling, and be gentle with ourselves in the process.  Doing so will make it easier for us to navigate the day’s discordant energies and use the lessons learned wisely.

Tarot for December 7th, 2016: Change, reversed

Today’s Tarot card is the 2 of Disks (Change), reversed.

The 2 of Disks falls within the realm of Jupiter in Capricorn.  Given that Jupiter currently resides in Libra, which squares Capricorn, there is already the suggestion of a challenge with the energies of this card today.  Both Libra and Capricorn are cardinal signs, dealing in initiatory energy, the territory of beginnings, and are not necessarily good at digging in for the long term.  Of course, long journeys can be made up of many little beginnings, many short undertakings combined into one long one.  This that Capricorn excels at, and why Jupiter in Capricorn, magnifying that tendency, governs this realm of change.  Just as the mountain goat hops from ledge to precarious ledge, with each new step a death-defying height to attain, so does the expanded faith in one’s own abilities shown by Jupiter in Capricorn emphasize ongoing movement in pursuit of one’s goals.

Reversed then, this card might seem to indicate an inability or unwillingness to change, but I suspect that in combination with today’s void-of-course Moon we are being advised to take things slower, and not push ourselves so unrelentingly.  Even mountain goats need to rest and find less dizzying heights to pause in for a bit before gathering strength and courage to scale the next mountain.  Now may be a good time to go with the flow a bit rather than trying to manipulate circumstances overmuch, and to consider the next change our lives carefully.

Tarot for December 6th, 2016: Strength

Today’s Tarot card is the 9 of Wands (Strength).

The 9 of Wands falls within the realm of the Sun in Sagittarius, and since we are currently in the second decanate of Sagittarius, we are in the heart of the Sun in Sagittarius season.  Nine being a number associated with completion, there is encouragement to take the ideals that we are awakened to by Sagittarius and run with them, and then get ready to build on them when we enter Capricorn season with the Winter Solstice on December 21st.

Winter can be a time of testing, a time when the weak and sick are thinned from the herd in the natural world.  The Sagittarius season at the beginning of winter is a time when we bolster ourselves with shared beliefs and ideals, shared customs and cultural rituals, shared camaraderie with friends and family and even strangers joined together by the merry-making of the season.  Now is the time when we build up the strength of faith in our ability to make it through the long, dark winter ahead.  Now is the time when we enjoy the warmth of connection in order to shut out the cold.

In the Thoth deck version of this card, both Sun and Moon are represented on the central arrow, uniting male and female, and both active and reflective principles.  Spiritual unity is called for here, and there is the intimation that recent periods of fear and uncertainty are to be followed by victory.  Spirit is backing us up here, the Divine aligned with the Personal in order to bring about the best possible outcome.  Now is a time for healing, and strengthening ourselves, for we may yet have to make a great application of strength to get through the times ahead, but our strength and faith and courage will get us through.

Tarot for December 5th, 2016: 6 of Swords

Today’s Tarot card is the 6 of Swords, Science.

Mercury in Aquarius governs the 6 of Swords.  The fact that it will be a couple of months before Mercury enters Aquarius simply underscores the future-minded quality of this card.  Mercury in Aquarius is conscious of the future and of technology, and has both Uranian insight and Saturnine planning skills to get to the desired outcome.  Mercury in Aquarius also sees the necessity of bringing in different points of view to create the best plan for achieving forward-thinking goals.  In the Thoth deck’s version of this card, we see six swords of differing colours but equal length and quality meeting at the center of the rosy cross, representing in this case harmony and concern for social order.  Here intellect and morality are equally blended along with the self-awareness that is required in order for each member of this gathering to contribute fairly and with the best capability.

Aquarius is a sign known for sociability and an interest in new ideas.  While today’s void-of-course Moon has been precluding the kind of social planning that the 6 of Swords implies, tonight’s entry of the Moon into Pisces may help get us back on track in harmonizing with other minds to plan for a better future, but it is more likely asking us to be mindful of our own internal path to harmony, to gather the parts of our own consciousness into a more cohesive and comprehensible whole.  Keep in mind that the path toward a better future is not without struggle – the cross is a symbol of suffering, after all.  But with Mercury in Aquarius, our struggles can be examined with detachment, understood on an intellectual level unclouded by emotional bias.  Given the emotional quality of a Pisces Moon, that seems unlikely to happen easily or naturally, but it is worth aiming for nonetheless.  Regardless, Aquarius and Pisces being the last two signs of the zodiac and therefore both having a high capacity for understanding does seem conducive to greater self-awareness, and so that may be the path toward success that the 6 of Swords is emphasizing most tonight.  The 6 of Swords shows a willingness to learn from our past mistakes and difficult experiences, and the eventual success that results from applying knowledge hard-won.

It’s been a rough few years for a lot of us, and 2016 the roughest so far.  We can learn from those experiences rather than being beaten down from them, and the 6 of Swords shows us the way to come out on top of the lessons of 2016 as we prepare to tackle 2017.  Now is the time to put past adversity to work for us.

Tarot for December 4th, 2016: Feeling What We Feel

The Tarot card for today is the Queen of Cups.

The Court cards in Tarot are all combinations of elements – there is the core element represented by the suit (in this case cups) and another element through the lens of which that core element is viewed, specific to the Court figure of the card (in this case the Queen).  The Queen’s element is water, so the Queen of Cups is water of water, emotions and instincts viewed through the lens of emotions and instincts.  In other words, the Queen allows herself to feel what she feels according to what her feelings tell her – she does not rationalize about what she feels or try to make her feelings conform to outside parameters.  She lets her feelings flow through her as they are without judging them, simply feeling them and being aware of what she feels, and then letting them flow past once she is done feeling them.  No holding on to what she felt before.  No ruminating on the past.  She is always present with what she feels.

This is of particular interest today in view of the Moon’s placement in Aquarius, which as I mentioned yesterday can have trouble understanding emotions.  When confronted with emotions that we don’t understand, sometimes the most important thing to do is to simply allow ourselves to feel them before trying to decide what they are or what to do about them.  We can’t know what something is if we don’t allow ourselves to experience it.

Today is a day where we may want to think or do more than feel.  But our emotions and intuitions and knee-jerk reactions are still there, still happening whether we want them to or not.  Given the possibilities for spirited connections and the rapid changes that air and fire together can elicit today, the Queen asks that we take the time allow ourselves to feel and not judge or hinder ourselves from that process.  This doesn’t mean that we have to emote all over the place, but simply be conscious of what we are feeling and when and how.  There is a whole world within that shouldn’t be forgotten when we are expanding our attention outward, as today encourages us to do.  As the Queen follows her own intuitions in being open to her feelings, so we can include ourselves in our openness to today’s wider horizons.
