Astrology Update, 3rd Quarter Moon, January 8th, 2018: Lantern Light

There is a kind of paradox in the January 8th, 2018 3rd Quarter Moon in Libra, appropriate to the eternal balancing act of the sign.  When Uranus in Aries stationed direct the day after the 1st of January’s two Full Moons, it ushered in an unusual time when all of the planets are currently direct, free from the hesitation and hiccups of the retrograde influence.  In combination with Saturn’s recent entry into Capricorn, one of the two signs that it rules, it would seem as though the universe is aligned in favor of movement and getting things done.  The 3rd Quarter Moon, however, is a time when we have been busy disseminating whatever intentions we planted at the New Moon and saw come into fruition at the Full Moon, and our energy is now beginning to peter out.  Ironically, despite the forward motion and impetus to action of all of the planets, the 3rd Quarter Moon is a time for review, reassessment, and refinement of what actions we have taken toward our goals, similar to the need for such review during retrograde periods.  The combination of the will to action and the need for review make this an especially good time to take actions related to shedding things we no longer need, breaking bad habits, and removing unwanted influences, so that whatever intentions we plant at the upcoming New Moon will be able to grow unimpeded.

January 6th saw Mars conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio, amplifying our need for action in some of the deepest and most intense areas of our lives, and this conjunction is still in orb to have a powerful effect on this 3rd Quarter Moon.  Scorpio is emotional deep water, swirling around our drive, our ambition, our aggression, that is now touched with the fervor of faith.  Neptune in Pisces is still trined to Jupiter, lending imagination to this brew, course-correcting our trajectories through our dreams, and bringing a sense of selflessness to our actions – we are more willing to act on behalf of others now and in service to the greater good, and more likely to want whatever we do to be meaningful on a deeper and more universal scale.  But this 3rd Quarter Moon also sees Mars sextile to Pluto, and Jupiter moving toward his exact sextile with Pluto in the darkness shortly before the New Moon.  Our will to action is powerful under the Plutonian influence, and as a result this is an especially good time to take action to correct power imbalances in our own lives and in our larger society.

Given that the 3rd Quarter Moon is a square aspect between the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Libra, there is a challenge here between our need for accomplishment and our instinctive desire not to upset the peace, our will to go-it-alone up the mountainside and that desire for companionship that got so stirred up at the Full Moon.  Social Libra is the sign most desirous of harmony that is also most likely to find that harmony all-too-easily disrupted, so the tendency of the 1st and 3rd Quarter Moons to unsettle us with their emphasis on change finds our instincts especially sensitive to such disruptions now.  We have this powerhouse of capability with Jupiter, Mars, Pluto, and Neptune in supportive aspects with each other, and a weary and uncertain Moon making us instinctually unwilling to rock the boat, even when the universe suggests that it is in serious need of rocking.  And thanks to the trine from Mercury to Uranus and the square from Mercury to Chiron, both on the 6th and both still in effect, our minds at least are primed to do some of that rocking, able to learn from Chironian discomfort and gain insight from the rapid changes that Uranus triggers, even if those changes are the last thing the sensitive Libran Moon feels equipped to handle.

Libra’s ruler Venus conjuncts the Sun today, and at the time of the 3rd Quarter Moon she is close enough to be considered cazimi, “in the heart of the Sun.”  In the few degrees leading up to this rarefied state, Venus has been considered combust, “under the rays of the Sun,” her loving and companionable qualities hidden, face and form burnt, uncertain of her own power, and hesitant to receive affection.  That said, Venus is strong in Capricorn, well-equipped to endure the Sun’s fire in pursuit of her more radiant self.  For once she reaches the cazimi degrees, all of her impurities and uncertainties are burnt away, and she shines with the brilliance imparted by the awareness of the Sun.  Both the Sun and Venus sextiled Jupiter a few hours before the 3rd Quarter Moon, bringing a sense of faith and optimism to this new awareness of our more evolved capacity for love and connection.  Now is the time to recognize who we have become in pursuit of the affection that became such an emotional challenge during the Full Moon’s opposition to Venus.  And because the Sun and Venus both conjunct Pluto and Mars the day after this 3rd Quarter Moon, now is the time to recognize the power and urgency of our connections as well, with all of their practical and emotional impact boosted to the hilt at a time when our instincts turn toward peace and quiet.  With the Moon squaring Sun, Venus, and Pluto at this time, we are challenged to accept affection, to believe that we are worthy to have love exert its power in our lives.  In the cold of winter, heading into the dark of the Moon, Venus in the heart of the Sun becomes our sustaining light, drawing our reluctant hearts forward to press on through the night.

Astrology Update, March 7th, 2017: Through the Waves

This morning the Moon in Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces in the wee hours of the morning, potentially enhancing our dreams with the combination of Cancerian and Piscean emotional sensitivity and psychic abilities.  We would do well to write down whatever we remember of our dreams as soon after waking as possible, as we may learn much about our own emotional landscape by reflecting on our dreams today.

Still in the early morning hours, the Moon in Cancer squares Venus in Aries.  Since Venus has just recently turned retrograde, she is already on unsteady footing, especially due to being in the  reflective, introspective mode of retrograde in such an active and driven sign.  Squaring the Moon in Cancer just highlights her uncertainty now, adding Cancerian moodiness and self-protectiveness into the mix, leading to potential insecurity and standoffishness or even outright hostility in our early morning dealings with others – a classic case of waking up on the wrong side of the bed.  Since this is a lunar influence and therefore acts on an unconscious level, we would do well to recognize that plenty of people around us are likely to be testy without knowing why, and take steps to guard our own emotional well-being accordingly.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Cancer trines the Sun in Pisces, creating greater ease and flow in emotional and intuitive matters, increasing our sympathy and willingness to assist and support each other.  This adds to the residual effects of yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and may bolster those of us in healing and service professions accordingly.  This time favors nurturing ourselves and our loved ones, exercising compassionate listening in order to understand our emotional connections and reactions and strengthen our bonds with those we feel kinship with.  This is an excellent time to foster community, particularly with those who bolster us creatively and spiritually, and this influence may also help us to find common ground with those we had not previously recognized as sharing such connections.

The Moon in Cancer trines Mercury in Pisces shortly thereafter, further emphasizing the qualities of both the Moon/Sun trine and yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and increasing our capacity to communicate what we feel to others, as well as helping us to attune our thoughts and feelings, heightening our intuition and sensitivity.  Our thoughts may well turn to matters of home and family at this time, but may also benefit from Cancerian business sense now.  This is a good time for communications that benefit from a delicate touch, and breaking the ice in social settings may be easier now.

This afternoon, our emotions take on a degree of intensity as the Moon in Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn, pitting what we feel against the great impersonal forces of our lives that affect our careers, reputations, and long-term goals.  We may find ourselves feeling defensive now, or struggling to maintain emotional control.  We may find our moods hijacked by the interference of others, and need to guard against getting sucked into power struggles.  Now is definitely a time to step aside, take a deep breath, and channel the power of what we feel into the energy we need to get done what we can, while recognizing that even if this influence throws us off course during this time that derailment is still only temporary.

This evening the Moon in Cancer squares first Jupiter in Libra then Uranus in Aries in short succession, highlighting the lingering effects of last week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in close orb and will be continuing to influence us through mid-March.  Our emotions and reactions tonight are caught up in the tug-of-war between the personal and the societal, the desire for aggressive and radical action in service of personal freedom versus the desire for peace and social harmony at all costs, and we may find our interpersonal relationships affected as a result.  We may be prone to sudden outbursts of emotion or mood fluctuations, and Jupiter’s touch is likely to make everything feel larger than life.  This is a T-square formation with the Moon acting as the release point between Jupiter and Uranus, our emotions and instincts becoming the pressure valve for the personal and societal tensions pitted against each other.  We are navigating stormy waters during this time and the more sensitive among us may be hard-pressed to make it through without the support of our more stalwart companions.

Late tonight Mercury in Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, giving some support to our ability to communicate about the deepest, darkest parts of our experience now, and helping us further in shedding thought and communication patterns that no longer serve us.  This influence may also aid our facility to communicate with and about those in power.  Secrets may be revealed now, and occult matters are favored at this time.  For the magically inclined among us this is a good time for spell-working, particularly in relation to correcting power imbalances and defending the powerless from abuses of power.  Of course, this applies in more mundane realms as well.  This is a good time for tending to legal and monetary matters, and those working in the intelligence community may gain a boost at this time, as well as those working as detectives or researchers.  Tonight we may gain deeper insight into our own long-term goals and how we may fulfill our ambitions while being of service to humanity.

This aspect is followed by the Moon in Cancer trining Chiron in Pisces, putting us emotionally in-touch with our deepest hurts and damaging patterns in a deeply supportive way, so that we may use what we feel to help purge the poison of old traumas, and as a result share both greater vulnerability and greater closeness with those whom we love.  This tempest-tossed night comes to a close with a potential gift of deep, intuitive wisdom to dream on.

Astrology of December 21st, 2016: Winter Solstice

vision-and-logic-gifu-side-detail2

Today is the day of the Winter Solstice, with the Sun entering Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning, starting the lengthening of days again, even if it takes a while for winter temperatures to catch up to the slowly increasing light.

Shortly before the witching hour and extending into the wee hours, we experienced the first lunar eclipse on the Solstice since 1638.  This is an extra space of darkness on the longest night of the year and during the introspection of the newly-begun Mercury retrograde that already has an unusually dark flavor to it due to it passing through Capricorn and having started so close to Pluto in Capricorn.  Darkness often gets a bad rap in “spiritual” circles, but I am inclined to look at it as a chance to rest our eyes and spirits a bit from an excess of active yang energy and brightness.  In the case of a lunar eclipse, the light of the Sun (consciousness) that the Moon reflects (unconsciousness) is hidden, and the Moon is seen through a lens of darkness, giving us the capacity to examine our unconscious minds on an intuitive and even psychic level.  This is the time for revelations to come to us through hidden channels and unexpected sources, and we should take note of whatever dreams we woke up from this morning.

No astrological aspects appear to stir the Libran harmony of the morning thereafter, with the first aspect of the day appearing in the afternoon with the Moon in Libra inconjunct Neptune in Pisces, recalling last night’s inconjunct between the Moon and Mars in these signs, with less Martial fervor and more Neptunian confusion.  Still, this is not one of the more uncomfortable inconjuncts, for these are both romantic signs and romantic players within them.  Libra wants everything to be peaceful and harmonious; Pisces knows that it is possible once we discard the illusion of separation.  The Moon governs the subconscious; Neptune governs dreams.  And while inconjuncts typically do not understand each other, in this combination they have a far easier time balancing their dissimilarities than other signs and bodies do, especially considering that Libra is the authority on balance, after all.

Things get a little more difficult to sort out with the Moon in Libra squaring Mercury in Capricorn toward the end of the night.  That instinct toward harmonious balance bumps up against a retrograde Mercury’s Capricornian tendency to tell it like it is, bluntly, and that lack of tact could be the very thing that distresses diplomatic Libra the most.  That said, this retrograde is a season for getting to the heart of the truth, especially regarding social mores and hierarchies, and the Libran desire for peace at all costs is going to need to take a back seat to that brutal honesty.  Still, Libra has a point in desiring to hear all sides of a story before making any judgements, and this may be at the heart of the challenge between these two tonight:  truth does not require brutality, but rather a balance of perspectives.  And the instinct toward peace is every bit as valid as the need to reconsider one’s actions and goals over this retrograde, and come to some kind of harmony in the wake of dissonance.

Tarot for December 18th, 2016: The Star

december-18th-2016-the-star

Today’s Tarot card is (XVII) The Star.  Ruled by Aquarius, this card resonates well with Venus’ current placement in that sign.

The Thoth deck version of this card shows the long-haired figure of the Water Bearer with two vessels pouring forth crystalline streams with a lovely rose-coloured planet in the background and a star shining bright over all (bright enough that my phone camera had a hard time registering an image of this card without a dreamy halo of white all around it).  While the figure corresponds to the star goddess Nuit, her depiction here is fairly gender-neutral, which is appropriate for the forward-thinking nature of this sign, and though there are roses of love and butterflies of transformative hope being born from the lower stream, still there is a quintessential Aquarian detachment to the figure, who is turned away from the viewer, focused intently on the emerging seven-pointed star within the upper chalice that mirrors the star on the planet and the star in the heavens above, the seven-pointed star that is a symbol of Venus.

The Star is wish magic, a focusing not simply of mind or speech or action or any combination thereof, but more importantly a focusing of values, the realm of Venus.  What really matters to us?  What does our whole being yearn toward, body, mind, and soul?  Wish-craft isn’t simply idle curiosity expecting to bear fruit.  Wish-craft focuses deeply, and is mindful of the consequences of that wish for both self and society.  What we wish for doesn’t affect us in isolation – it reverberates from our consciousness and experience to that of others around us.  And what we take in, what we reinforce and believe, these affect the outcome of our wishes.  In order to have a chance of making what we wish for come true, we have to believe in the possibility of it coming true.  We have to trust that we live in a universe where it can come true.

Thus, The Star is about trust in the universe, trust in the cosmic order.  It shows when we are on the right path and lets us know that all will be well in the end.  And with this card being within the realm of Venus in Aquarius, both via the seven-pointed star imagery and its current appearance in the time of an Aquarian Venus transit, we are reminded that the process of manifestation inherent in wish-magic is a process of love.  Hope, faith, and help from unexpected sources all come forward through this card and the principles it invokes.  Now is a time in which our confidence can be bolstered and our interconnectedness affirmed in service of our goals.  We are encouraged to tap into our inner knowing, the sea of unconscious knowledge that ties us to our ancestors and all of humanity, and listen to our dreams.  The Star is our reminder:  Dreams can come true!
