Astrology Update, April 15th, 2018, New Moon in Aries: Flowering Desires

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries falls between Uranus and Eris, within orb to be conjunct to both. New Moons align the consciousness of the Sun with the instincts and emotions of the Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon.

The potential for new beginnings at this New Moon is heightened by the conjunction to Uranus, which brings the power of sudden insight and radical change. The conjunction to Eris combined with Mercury stationing direct at this time emphasizes a need for honesty in communication, which the Aries placement strengthens. Since Uranus operates as the higher expression of Mercury, the potential for sudden insight from unexpected directions is amplified, along with the need to apply lessons from this recent retrograde to communications regarding that insight as we move forward.

This New Moon also sees a Triangle of Potential between Jupiter in Scorpio opposite Venus in Taurus with Jupiter sextile Pluto in Capricorn and Pluto trining Venus. Capricornian Pluto in the mix may help mitigate the self-indulgence associated with Jupiter opposite Venus or it could intensify it, but regardless we are likely to experience heightened optimism and desire for the good things in life, with all of the powerful, earthy sensuousness that Venus in her home sign of Taurus brings to the table being ramped up by the combined forces of Jupiter and Pluto. That Jupiter/Pluto combination can bring hidden feelings to the forefront now, so if you’ve been quietly carrying a torch for someone, now is the perfect time to express those feelings.

The Triangle of Potential magnifies our desires and the capacity to manifest what we want on both a practical and emotional level, and in combination with the Sun/Moon conjuncting and bridging Uranus/Eris during the Mercury station emphasizing the need for both change and honest communication, gives us an opportunity to make major improvements in our lives that serve our own needs but can also strengthen our connections with others. Mars in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces now, aligning our efforts with our ideals, enhancing sensuality, and helping to keep our actions compassionate. This combination of alignments makes this a lovely New Moon for taking new steps in relationships, especially those of a romantic nature, and also makes this a great time for embarking on new creative endeavors.

Astrology Update, Lunar Eclipse, January 31st, 2018: Lordly Due

Full Moons are normally a time when the intentions we set two weeks earlier at the New Moon are coming into fruition.  This Full Moon just happens to feature a Lunar Eclipse in Leo, so rather than simply casting the light of the Sun’s consciousness upon our usual emotions, instincts, and cycles, we now find that our most hidden feelings are coming to the surface, revealing our suppressed emotions and reactions and past situations that have planted the seeds for what we feel now.

As eclipses operate on a six month axis, now is a time to wipe our emotional slates clean, freeing ourselves of whatever emotional baggage we have accumulated in the past six months, especially when it comes to how we express our emotions and how our emotions reveal our innermost truths and make them ripe for the sharing. This Moon very closely conjuncts the asteroid Ceres retrograde, placing emphasis on how we nurture ourselves and others with our feelings and instinctual reactions.  We may find this to be an exceptionally “hungry” Moon, demanding, consuming, unwilling to take “no” for an answer.  The Moon conjunct a retrograde Ceres also brings issues of motherhood to the forefront, particularly those in which nurturance becomes dominating or smothering.  Old wounds from our families of origin may bubble to the surface now.

Black Moon Lilith still loosely conjunct Pluto in Capricorn gives further fuel to the Dark Mother archetype, and with Black Moon Lilith squaring the conjunction of Eris with Uranus in Aries, we may find our mother issues generating sudden disruptions to our lives that feel like they’ve been set in motion by the hands of fate.  With both Black Moon Lilith and Pluto still sextile Jupiter in Scorpio, we may yet be able to summon a practical capacity for objectively and even optimistically assessing the transformations we are experiencing at this time, but Jupiter’s touch continues to magnify their power and their depth, no matter what equanimity we are able to muster on the surface.

This Moon also loosely conjuncts the North Node, increasing the long-term importance of what we learn from these emotional revelations, and warning us against intemperate action based on eclipse-driven impulses.  The Sun loosely conjuncting Venus and the South Node in Aquarius at this time amplifies our capacity for openness, friendliness, and insights regarding social connections yet also increases the likelihood of run-ins with old loves or social circles that we have drifted away from, but with the Moon also inconjunct Neptune at this time it is likely that such encounters will only increase confusion and disenchantment, as Neptune in Pisces encourages the dissolution of boundaries that our hearts need for security as we carve out our emotional realm, and Neptune’s slippery, illusory glimmer is likely to create some bewildering territory to trip up our bold leonine instincts.

This is not a Full Moon that it is easy to find the benefits of, with the intensity and capacity for unforeseen disruptions that tend to accompany eclipses combined with the ferocity and resistance to change of our surfacing emotions.  In particular we may find ourselves confronting our innermost feelings regarding the attention that we do or do not receive from others, wondering “when will my time in the spotlight come?” or, just as easily feeling deeply uncomfortable from an excess of attention in a time or place where we would rather fade into the woodwork.  I always say that the best way to wrangle Leos is to give them whatever they consider to be their “lordly due,” whatever they need to feel most recognized and able to shine as their truest selves, and this eclipsed Leo Moon is demanding its emotional “lordly due” – recognition of the full truth of what we feel, no matter how difficult those feelings might be.

Astrology Update, February 24th, 2017: Action!

We are still feeling the residual effects of last night’s Mercury/Saturn sextile, fortifying our minds and our communication, aiding our planning and organizing skills, our ability to do repetitive tasks, and our data-crunching capabilities.  This is a good time to get tasks done that might not normally be exciting but which are necessary steps in furthering our own improvement as well as our social goals and ideals.  We’re also already starting to feel the effects of next week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, the second in a series that started in late December and will culminate at the end of September, reinforcing yesterday’s Jupiter/Eris opposition and challenging us to find the balance between innovative individual freedom and harmony in relationships as well as faith in social order, particularly when our Eris-fueled bullshit detectors are dialed to 10.

Today’s astrological aspects are blessedly harmonious and minimal, giving us some respite from the activity of the past couple days.  This morning sees a sextile from the Moon in Aquarius to Venus in Aries, giving some Venusian warmth to our feelings and increasing our friendliness while at the same time allowing us to remain self-motivated and even a bit detached.  This is a great balance to encourage taking action without getting bogged down in emotion and simultaneously giving some sense of social responsibility to the will to dance to our own music.  Of course, given that the transcendental ruler of Aquarius, Uranus is hanging out in Aries along with Venus, Mars, and Eris, that sense of responsibility is still likely to be revolutionary.  Our instincts this morning lead us in search of new ways of doing things, and are going to be excited by new ideas and technologies, but thanks to Venus in this mix we are likely to want to be hands-on with that excitement rather than just living in the world of ideas.  Since Venus governs the female sexual principle, this aspect can also be a good reminder of just how sexy forthrightness and a bit of impulsiveness can be, and that’s a pleasurable glow to light up the morning and linger into the astrological quiet of the afternoon.

This active impulse is reinforced late tonight when the Moon in Aquarius sextiles Mars in Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a boost from our drive, ambition, aggression, focus, and energy.  Mars governs the male sexual principle, and following on the heels of our emotions aligned with Venusian affections we may find ourselves pursuing those affections more aggressively tonight.  Aries is one of the two signs that Mars rules, so he’s in the height of his power here, bolstering our courage and uninterested in excuses about not getting what we want.  Mars in Aries rejects excuses and moves forward boldly and quickly to make it so already, damnit.  Those of us who have been languishing in uncertainty may find this aspect coming after the boost in confidence from this morning’s Moon/Venus sextile cutting through all of that crap, and about time, too.

Astrology Update, February 23rd, 2017: Guiding Fires

Late this morning the Moon entered Aquarius, bringing our instincts into a place governed more by reason than emotion.  The Moon tends to be slightly uncomfortable in Aquarius, and so at this time we are more inclined to think about a feeling than actually feel it.  Aquarius is highly oriented toward group concerns and causes, so now is a time to be social for a purpose.  On the social end of things, activism is favored as well as classes, public lectures, and similar gatherings that educate and lift people up, while on the solitary side activities like reading and other means of self-improvement are emphasized.  We are inclined to be curious and friendly under this Moon, interested most in what is best for all, yet also a bit aloof and highly self-motivated, as well as zealously guarding our liberty even in the midst of our social endeavors.

We are now also under the influence of an opposition between Jupiter in Libra and Eris in Aries, a slow-moving influence that has been building over the past couple of months, exact today for the second time in 2017 due to Jupiter’s retrograde, with the third and final opposition between these two upcoming in early September.  Eris the dwarf planet whose discovery led to the demotion of Pluto from full-fledged planet to dwarf planet status.  Named for the Greek goddess of discord, Eris heightens our discontent and our dislike of hypocrisy, and due to an incredibly elongated elliptic orbit has been slowly traversing Aries for many years, even long before her discovery (to put things in perspective, she’s been in Aries since before I was born).  The aspects that Uranus and Jupiter have been making with Eris recently (Uranus will conjunct Eris exactly again in mid-March and is still in orb to be considered conjunct now) are a huge part of why people are so fed up with their governments and institutional hypocrisy, and we are likely to see more disruption as the cycle between these planets continues over the next few months, with Uranus’s revolutionary fervor joining forces with Eris’ will to shake things up, magnified by the ongoing opposition to Jupiter that has fueled both of them.  For today, we may feel more disruption in relation to our ability to put up and shut up, a little less willingness to be diplomatic in relation to social realms and authority figures, and that influence continues to extend through the end of the month.

Toward mid-day, the Moon in Aquarius sextiled Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, increasing our focus on social realms and causes and our ideals in these areas.  We may see challenges to our ideals now that we instinctively accept and that shape our feelings toward our own causes, helping us to more effectively navigate both those challenges and what must be done to overcome them.  Our drive is instinctively increased at this time, even as we may feel more in need of surrendering to the larger forces of social change – our unconscious will to be part of a global shift is heightened now.

The big astrological news of the day is this afternoon’s sextile between Mercury in Aquarius and Saturn in Sagittarius, reinforcing that sense of social change but in a more conscious fashion, with our minds joining forces with our discipline to persuade both ourselves and our society to live up to our ideals.  Our minds and our communication are more serious at this time, steady, disciplined, aware of our limitations but willing to push through them with patience and persistence.  This time favors modest financial dealings, taking steps to ensure future security, especially when doing so is beneficial on a community level.  It’s a good time for planning, scheduling, and organizing, particularly in relation to social causes and political actions.  Now is the time for our thoughts and words to be the sparks that ignite beacon fires out of our strongest beliefs and ideals.

Astrology of January 17th, 2017: Prioritizing Harmony

The day began with the Moon void-of-course in Virgo, starting from last night’s trine from the Moon to the Sun around the witching hour.  In the early morning hours the Moon left the detail and process oriented earthiness of Virgo and entered airy Libra, giving our emotions and instincts a more social focus.  Personal relationships, especially partnerships, are now emphasized, as well as a desire for peace and social harmony.  Libra is ruled by Venus and has refined tastes as a result, so we are likely to have a greater appreciation for the finer things in life at this time, and should be careful not to overindulge in the process of that appreciation.

Libra is particularly desirous of harmony because this sign is so easily thrown off by disruptive influences, so there is a strong potential to feel easily unsettled during this Moon, and that potential was given a kick-start this morning by Jupiter in Libra opposing Eris, the goddess of Discord, in individualistic Aries.  This is the first of three exact oppositions between these bodies this year, and among other things it is likely to heighten our awareness of the hypocrisies that Libra all-too-often puts up with in the name of peaceful relations.  Eris is having none of those!  And since Jupiter magnifies whatever he touches, our awareness of discordant situations is heightened, and our BS detectors may well be triggered with uncomfortable frequency.  Keep in mind also that with these slow-moving outer planets and dwarf planets the energetic environments that we associate with aspects between them last long before and after the day that they become exact, so chances are that we’ve been feeling the build-up to this for a while, and will feel it for some time to come.  Today’s Libra Moon just happens to make it more noticeable on the emotional and instinctual level, rather than on the trans-personal level normally associated with outer planets.

This was followed toward midday by the Moon in Libra squaring Mercury in Capricorn, potentially leading to communication missteps and frayed tempers, as Mercury in Capricorn tends to err on the side of bluntness, and the Moon in Libra is already likely to feel more sensitive than usual and really doesn’t want to deal with any more conflict.  That said, Librans are remarkably good at giving advice, and if we are mindful of our unconscious desires to smooth things over at the expense of goal-oriented communication, we may be able to work with the challenge between these two to come up with some truly masterful ways of navigating our career and social channels diplomatically without losing sight of our end goals.  This is not likely to be easy, but will be rewarding if we are up to the challenge, especially since Mercury trines the North Node in Virgo this afternoon, which creates greater flow and ease between our thoughts and communication and our karmic path, and makes it likely that whatever we are awkwardly trying to say without stepping on too many toes really does need to be said if we are ever to live up to our true purpose and create the lives we truly want for ourselves.

The last notable aspect of the day appears in the early evening when the Sun in Capricorn opposes Vesta in Cancer.  This leads to a greater awareness of the polarity between career and family, material manifestation and emotional security, and asks us to consider where we put our focus and what is sacred to us.  Vesta’s sacred flame in domestic Cancer holds up a small mirror to the Sun in the devoted sign of Capricorn, reminding us to tend to the home fires and be mindful of our space, both physical and emotional.  Given the Libra Moon’s concern with balance, this is an especially good time to work on integrating the lessons of this opposition, understanding that each of these parts of our lives can have fair and equal time if we are willing to make this harmony a priority.
