Astrology Update, March 4th, 2017: Hearts and Minds at Sea

This morning’s early hours saw a trio of significant astrological events starting the day on a potentially jarring note, with Venus stationing retrograde in Aries, followed first by the Moon entering Gemini and then by Mercury conjuncting Neptune.  Keep in mind that we are still feeling residual effects of Thursday’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, which may heighten discord and agitation in relationships and in connection with authority figures, and may also lead to sudden financial changes.

Retrogrades occur as a result of the differences in orbits between the Earth and other planets in our solar system, making it appear that those planets are traveling backward in relation to the Earth.  Of course, they are not actually traveling backward, but still there seems to be a corresponding effect in terms of how we relate to the archetypes and themes of those planets.  Currently, Jupiter is retrograde, so now is a time of reassessing our relationships with luck, wealth, faith, and authority, particularly in connection with interpersonal relationships and social systems, especially with regard to what creates and keeps social harmony in our lives.  Since Jupiter is currently opposite Uranus, the Jovian themes that we are re-considering during this retrograde are being challenged and informed by our own desire for freedom, our rebellious tendencies, our insights, and our visions of the future.

Stationing planets appear to slow down and halt their normal motion in preparation to turn retrograde or direct.  Venus stationing today heightens our focus on Venus’ themes of relating to others, what we take pleasure in, and what we value, and while the exact point at which she turns retrograde happened in the early hours of this morning, we are likely to feel the effects of this station strongly throughout the day.  Venus rules Taurus, the sign the Moon has been in for the past two days, as well as Libra, the sign in which Jupiter is currently retrograde, so Venus themes have already had a strong measure of emphasis recently.  In fiery Aries, Venus expresses herself actively and independently, even impulsively.  Relationships begun under an Aries Venus are more likely to be expressed in this manner.  Now, however, Venus’ retrograde asks us to reconsider how we express our affections, how we connect with others, how we share our beauty (both inner and outer) with the world, and what we value.  This is a time when we may reconsider our relationships, or may return to older fashion styles, or may give ourselves a makeover, whether literal or figurative.  We may find ourselves feeling insecure about our looks, or our possessions, and we may be more likely to experience buyers’ remorse and return recent purchases.  This is a time that encourages spring cleaning, though we would do well to measure our pace in such activities and not throw out the baby with the bathwater, as Venus is still in impulsive Aries during the first half of this retrograde (she returns to sensitive Pisces in the second half, before stationing direct on April 15th).  There is some disagreement among astrologers as to whether Venus should be considered as an indicator for wealth.  Since she rules Taurus and therefore rules the 2nd house, I think it would be wise not to discredit the effect Venus may have on our financial well-being, since Taurus is the sign most associated with material possessions.  That said, I think that Venus’ role in relation to wealth is very much about what we take pleasure in and how we define our values, and therefore she is most likely to affect the extent to which we are or are not able to indulge ourselves at this time.  I think it very prudent to keep an eye on our purchases during any time in which Venus’ normal operation is challenged, like today, and expect that during this retrograde we may see some limitation of Venus’ benevolent expression on the material plane as well as in the more abstract interpersonal arenas.  On the plus side, if we are contemplating any big steps in her realm, such as marriage or a high-ticket purchase like a house, now is a good time to carefully reconsider and address any potential problems with these moves, so that come April 15th we can move forward with confidence.  For those of us who are single, Venus retrograde may well be a lonely time but it is also a good opportunity to reassess how we are approaching others, how we put ourselves out to the world, how we express affection, and how we meet our own needs in relationships, and to make any necessary adjustments that can help us move forward more successfully in these areas come April 15th.

As mentioned before, the Venus station was followed by the Moon entering Gemini in the early morning hours, taking our emotions out of the Venusian realm of earthy Taurus and leading us into a more mental and communicative place.  Gemini is known as the Sign of Man, a sign of duality that leads us to explore opposites, and also a sign of curiosity and inventiveness.  A mutable sign, Gemini is flexible and mobile, and likes to keep things light, to experience many things within a short period of time, which can lead to a reputation for frivolity as there tends not to be much time to explore depths on a Gemini’s busy schedule.  That said, being ruled by Mercury Gemini is sharp-minded and quick, able to gather a lot of information in a short time, so it is wise not to dismiss Gemini as being all about fluff and no substance.  Gemini loves technology and especially tech that facilitates communication, so the Internet may become extra lively during this Moon.  Under a Gemini Moon we are likely to be emotionally responsive, more interested in communicating ideas about what we feel than actually experiencing those feelings, but also more willing to discuss emotions in the first place, which may be particularly helpful while kicking off the Venus retrograde.  Still, a Gemini Moon has us preferring to keep things light-hearted and fun, and encourages us to respond to serious matters with a certain degree of wit and even flippancy.  Thus, we might get the ball rolling on relationship-related conversations now, but we’re not likely to solve any major problems on the subject at this time.  Short journeys are favored during this time, as are quick transactions and the kind of cursory study that helps us determine what to research in more depth once the Moon is in a sign with more perseverance.

Following the Moon entering Gemini and still within the early morning hours, Gemini’s ruler Mercury conjuncted Neptune in Pisces this morning, potentially fogging things up a bit in mental realms for the rest of the day and thus getting the Moon’s time in Gemini off to a rough start.  Neptune governs imagination and our spiritual inclinations, but also blurs boundaries and thus can heighten confusion and even deception.  Where Neptune appears in our natal charts is where we tend to give ourselves the short end of the stick, typically because Neptune heightens our sense of compassion, but also because Neptune can limit the expression of our egos, and while it may be fashionable in some spiritual circles to denigrate the ego, a healthy ego is still a necessity for navigating reality on the material plane.  We may find our thoughts struggling to make sense of practical matters now, more prone to daydream and escapist fantasies.  Now is not a time for any activity requiring sharp mental acuity, and it is unwise to sign contracts during this time or enter into verbal agreements.  There is a strong potential to be deceived during this time, in large part because our own wishful thinking and heightened sympathies can make us easily led astray.  Those of us whose Sun, Moon, or rising signs are ruled by Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) and those of us for whom Mercury is prominently placed in our natal or progressed charts should be especially careful today.  Mental illness is also more likely to manifest symptoms during this time, as Neptune governs illness and as the transcendental ruler of Pisces and the 12th house also governs hospitalization.  On the plus side, this conjunction can also amplify creativity, especially in Mercurial areas such as writing, so today is a good day for writers of fiction or poetry, especially those exploring spiritual or oceanic themes.

Toward mid-morning the Moon in Gemini opposed Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, which could well heighten feelings of overwhelm resulting from the Mercury/Neptune conjunction.  Black Moon Lilith tends to immerse us in the darker places of whatever sign she is traversing and whatever luminary or planet she aspects, so we may find our emotions experiencing more of the disconnect between the airy realm of Gemini and the watery realm of Pisces where Gemini’s ruler is currently in the grip of the transformative power of Neptune, and Black Moon Lilith’s transit through Sagittarius just throws that disconnect into sharp relief via Sagittarius’ notoriously forthright and righteously hot temperament.  We may have found ourselves extra testy this morning as a result, and although thankfully lunar aspects are short-lived, still the deeply unconscious nature of both the Moon and Black Moon Lilith could have found the reverberations of this contact lasting well into the day, especially since Black Moon Lilith is about wisdom gained through trying experiences.

As the morning progresses, that orientation toward lessons is doubly-emphasized by the Moon in Gemini squaring the Nodal axis, challenging our progression from remaining stuck in the familiar to learning new skills and growing along our karmic path.  We may find ourselves feeling emotionally trapped at this time, or at least resistant, especially since the North Node in Virgo and the Moon in Gemini are both experiencing the Neptune-induced brain fog of their ruler Mercury, and Virgo’s concern with details is not likely to sit well with the Gemini Moon’s instinctual pursuit of a broad base of information to the detriment of more detailed examination.  With the Mercury/Neptune conjunction fogging up the works, the North Node is especially hard-pressed to be able to attend to the details of our growth now, but it’s not going down without a fight (karma rarely does!) and so we are likely to be painfully aware that we are not living up to the requirements of our karmic path at this time, even if that awareness is just a nagging feeling in our subconscious that won’t allow us to get completely comfortable in our activities today.

Our emotional and instinctual discomfort comes to a head late tonight as the Moon in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces, reinforcing the mind-clouding effects of the Mercury/Neptune conjunction and urging us further toward escapist reactions to our feelings and the events of the day.  Tonight there is a very real danger of falling into addictive behaviors, retreating into alcohol or drugs, or just plain avoiding anything that smacks of reality.  While Moon/Neptune aspects can sometimes enhance our creativity, this is a challenging aspect that may make it harder than usual to tap into the helpful elements of both of these bodies, especially given the Mercury/Neptune conjunction and the other astrological challenges of the day.  Those of us who already experience health challenges, especially those of us with chronic illnesses and ailments that defy diagnosis, are likely to have a rougher time than usual under this influence.  Tonight is a time to be gentle and compassionate with ourselves and others, and channel as much of our escapist instinct into more benign expressions of fantasy, such as books, movies, music, and art.  Thankfully this is a lunar aspect and therefore relatively short-lived in comparison with some of the other influences of the past few days, and tomorrow we will be getting a boost of active and disciplined energy from Mars in Aries trining Saturn in Sagittarius, so we should not be too hard on ourselves about what we don’t get done today.  Turning in early to take advantage of Neptune’s heightened capacity for dreaming may be just what the doctor ordered, and today’s confusion may still yield valuable wisdom to make good use of tomorrow.

Astrology Update, March 2nd, 2017: Imaginative Balance

The Moon’s influence today is consistently benevolent, which is a blessing after the uproar of yesterday.  Still, we are laboring through the lingering fog of yesterday’s Sun/Neptune conjunction, and this evening sees the second of three exact oppositions from Jupiter to Uranus making a recipe for bedlam despite the Taurus Moon’s steadying touch.

This morning at least things started off decently enough, with the Moon in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, aligning our emotions and instincts with our sense of purpose, helping us to tend to the necessary details along our karmic path, learning new skills and being mindful of the process in our growth while responding to our circumstances with a practical attitude grounded in real life and strong sensory impressions.  This is a great environment for getting things done!

This afternoon the Moon sextiles Mercury in Pisces, bringing a more imaginative flavor to what we feel while steadying our minds and communication so that our imaginations don’t run away with us.  This is a perfect time to take creative inspiration and make good use of it in the real world, as our instincts now are thoroughly practical yet capable of seeing the usefulness in what we can dream up.  Our attitudes and communication are likely to be tolerant and compassionate now, making it easier to work with others during this time, though under this influence we can work just as well alone, enjoying some quiet introspection and the practical results it may bring.

The big astrological news of today is the opposition from Jupiter in Libra to Uranus in Aries early this evening.  I’ve talked about this aplenty as an ongoing influence stretching from the winter holidays through until September.  This is the second of three exact oppositions between Jupiter and Uranus, resulting from Jupiter’s current retrograde through Libra that has us reconsidering our beliefs in connection with relationships and social harmony, as well as reviewing and revising our attitudes regarding good fortune and luck, and what creates abundance in our lives.  Uranus opposing Jupiter today creates sudden shake-ups in our attitudes surrounding these areas of our lives, and reminds us that success is meaningless without the freedom to enjoy it.  Uranus in Aries is all about independence, as well as progress, new technologies, and the flashes of insight that lead us into the future.  Uranus is a revolutionary that will not be satisfied by maintaining the status quo, and in connection with Jupiter can lead to unusual twists and turns in our fortunes.  Out-of-the-box thinking is magnified today, and with Mercury in Pisces could well take an imaginative turn – keep in mind that Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, so what affects Jupiter affects the sign and the planets in it, including the Sun and Neptune and the residual effects of yesterday’s conjunction.  Jupiter in Libra seeks good fortune in connections, while Uranus in Aries opposing him reminds us not to get too cozy in our efforts at diplomacy, lest we forget ourselves in the name of keeping the peace.  Since Jupiter does affect wealth, we would also do well to be mindful of our finances at this time – we could see sudden expenses popping up now, and we should be careful about impulse buys.

This evening sees the Moon in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces, heightening the imaginative quality of the evening and increasing our desire for some self-indulgent escapism.  Luckily this is a harmonious aspect, steadying our escapist tendencies with Taurean practicality and softening the Taurus Moon’s bluntness with Neptunian spirituality and Piscean compassion.  Taurus is ruled by sensual Venus and Pisces is both sensual and connective, while the Moon/Neptune sextile turns our emotions and instincts romantic, so this may be a time to soften the edges of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition’s effects on our relationships with a more intimate perspective.

Later tonight the Moon in Taurus sextiles the Sun in Pisces, heightening the connection between these two signs and the sensual affection that their combination inspires.  These harmonious and connective aspects coming on the heels of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition suggest that whatever changes this opposition brings to our attitudes regarding the balance between self and other have a strong potential to be integrated through shared enjoyment of connection within the physical world, and our practical feelings can be enhanced through compassion and intimacy as well.  Yes, our sense of stability can be shaken and our optimism come into question, but we can also find new ways to experience and express what is best in our relationships, and feel a sense of oneness that is informed by our diverse experiences.  Balancing the needs of the self and the collective may not be the easiest of tasks.  But under tonight’s Moon/Sun sextile it might get a bit easier.

Astrology Update, February 24th, 2017: Action!

We are still feeling the residual effects of last night’s Mercury/Saturn sextile, fortifying our minds and our communication, aiding our planning and organizing skills, our ability to do repetitive tasks, and our data-crunching capabilities.  This is a good time to get tasks done that might not normally be exciting but which are necessary steps in furthering our own improvement as well as our social goals and ideals.  We’re also already starting to feel the effects of next week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, the second in a series that started in late December and will culminate at the end of September, reinforcing yesterday’s Jupiter/Eris opposition and challenging us to find the balance between innovative individual freedom and harmony in relationships as well as faith in social order, particularly when our Eris-fueled bullshit detectors are dialed to 10.

Today’s astrological aspects are blessedly harmonious and minimal, giving us some respite from the activity of the past couple days.  This morning sees a sextile from the Moon in Aquarius to Venus in Aries, giving some Venusian warmth to our feelings and increasing our friendliness while at the same time allowing us to remain self-motivated and even a bit detached.  This is a great balance to encourage taking action without getting bogged down in emotion and simultaneously giving some sense of social responsibility to the will to dance to our own music.  Of course, given that the transcendental ruler of Aquarius, Uranus is hanging out in Aries along with Venus, Mars, and Eris, that sense of responsibility is still likely to be revolutionary.  Our instincts this morning lead us in search of new ways of doing things, and are going to be excited by new ideas and technologies, but thanks to Venus in this mix we are likely to want to be hands-on with that excitement rather than just living in the world of ideas.  Since Venus governs the female sexual principle, this aspect can also be a good reminder of just how sexy forthrightness and a bit of impulsiveness can be, and that’s a pleasurable glow to light up the morning and linger into the astrological quiet of the afternoon.

This active impulse is reinforced late tonight when the Moon in Aquarius sextiles Mars in Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a boost from our drive, ambition, aggression, focus, and energy.  Mars governs the male sexual principle, and following on the heels of our emotions aligned with Venusian affections we may find ourselves pursuing those affections more aggressively tonight.  Aries is one of the two signs that Mars rules, so he’s in the height of his power here, bolstering our courage and uninterested in excuses about not getting what we want.  Mars in Aries rejects excuses and moves forward boldly and quickly to make it so already, damnit.  Those of us who have been languishing in uncertainty may find this aspect coming after the boost in confidence from this morning’s Moon/Venus sextile cutting through all of that crap, and about time, too.

Astrology of December 30th, 2016: Moving Forward

early-light

The Moon in Capricorn squared Jupiter in Libra in the wee hours of this morning, amplifying our instincts and emotions especially in relation to conflicts between our needs in pursuit of our goals and our need for harmony with our partners and loved ones.  If you were asleep during this time, you might want to take note of any dreams that you experienced.

This afternoon/early evening, the Sun in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces, supporting our dreams with a consciousness willing to devote ourselves to achieving them, and our dreams making our daily realities more inspiring to navigate.  Now we see more possibilities, more connections, more opportunities.  We may have a sixth sense about where to exert our will next in pursuit of our goals, and may find a greater flow and ease to our actions in support of those goals.  With Mars in Pisces in between Neptune and the South Node at a near-conjunction to both, our energy and drive are in alignment both with our skills coming forward from the past and with our dreams and ideals, so our efforts will be more likely to yield results in line with our intentions.

This starts a short void-of-course period best suited to routine activities and finishing tasks, making plans, correcting problems, or spending time with close friends.  It is also a time that in combination with Mercury retrograde can have us in a bit of a fog for its duration, so we would be wise to be extra mindful of our surroundings during this time.

The Moon enters Aquarius this evening, becoming more socially conscious, more independent, more forward-thinking.  Analytical and inventive, Aquarius is ruled classically by Saturn and transcendentally by Uranus, so now is an excellent time to harvest the energies of both, since Uranus in Aries just turned direct yesterday and has been in a supportive sextile with Saturn in Sagittarius, forming a triangle of potential with Jupiter that can now be utilized on an instinctive, emotional level to move forward with change that is disciplined and mindful of the needs of both ourselves as individuals and society as a whole.  We can now see how the evolution of the individual is a means to the evolution of the whole of humanity, and how our own evolution is necessary to help our world to evolve.  The Moon’s connection to our unconscious increases the sense of collective knowledge regarding this lesson.  What we do with it remains to be seen.

Tarot for December 26th, 2016: Princess of Wands, reversed

december-26th-2016-princess-of-wands-reversed

Today’s Tarot card is the Princess of Wands, reversed.

The Princess of Wands is the practical side of spirit and action and creativity.  She is courage applied, taking the tiger by the tail and dancing in the sacrificial fire that would consume someone of lesser mettle.  She leaps forward and forcefully liberates herself from the fearful habits that had previously held her back, a living embodiment of Uranus’ current transit of Aries.

The Princess is associated with Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth who demanded virginal purity of her priestesses.  In astrology, the asteroid Vesta shows where our focus is when we are not sexually active, and she also shows what we hold sacred.  The sacred fire of spirit and creative action within us is both the spark of life that animates us and a guiding beacon to others.  When we withhold it or stifle it we feel diminished, depleted, and less visible, and those around us who were previously guided by that light are hindered by its absence, whether or not they are conscious of the reason why.

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” – Anais Nin

Reversed, the Princess’ courage is withheld, and with it her vitality.  The logical question becomes “why are we holding back?”  Now is the time for us to examine our fears and let them be burned away in the fires of consciousness.

Keep in mind that the Princess in her upright state is a force of nature, an avatar of unbridled passion, true to herself and unconcerned with permanence.  She is eternally living in the moment.  And this state of freedom and impermanence can be frightening in a world that defines us by material possessions and social standing.  The Princess is completely at home in the change that is the true constant of the Universe, and that is a difficult state of being for those of us striving to live by the rules and the expectations of our society.  Especially when the Universe is throwing us extra doses of instability, we may struggle to hold on to some form of structure, even if it is a form that is damaging to us.  Today’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition has thrown this struggle into sharp focus, and the Princess appearing here reversed suggests that some vital part of us may be losing this battle.  Now is the time to take a deep breath with which to feed our inner fire, and recognize that the social harmony and the structures of the status quo that we feel so much pressure to preserve are not served by the deaths of our spirits.
