Astrology Update, New Moon in Capricorn, January 16th, 2018: Why So Serious?

New Moons are a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned, working together in harmony, giving us a great opportunity to go within and understand ourselves and what we truly want, and then plant seeds of intention accordingly.  With all planets now moving direct and no retrogrades until Jupiter’s retrograde in early March, the seeds that we plant now are especially favored to yield real results, particularly if we are patient and mindful of where our goals fit within the larger plan.

This New Moon occurs at 26 degrees Capricorn, a sign known for its patience and determination, and with Capricorn’s ruler Saturn in this sign along with Pluto, Venus, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith, there is a powerful emphasis on all things Saturnine, including age, time, process, karma, rules, responsibility, limitations, and structure.  There are consequences to the seeds we sow now, and what we grow will take time and patience to cultivate.  Now is a good time to seek the advice of a wise elder, to respect earth-based traditions, tend to our bodies and our bones in particular, and reconnect with the natural world as best we can despite potentially daunting winter weather.

Jupiter in Scorpio sextile to Pluto in Capricorn at this time is part of a repeating pattern for much of 2018, expanding our possibilities for transformation and lending faith and optimism to the process, which are much-needed when facing some of the darker institutional and societal secrets that are being dredged up during Pluto’s Capricorn transit, as well as personal traumas for those of us with planets and luminaries touched by this transit.  This sextile can help us to be real powerhouses in whatever areas of our natal and progressed charts are touched by Scorpio and Capricorn, but it can also amp up the intensity of our experiences there, though being a supportive aspect it is unlikely to yield any dire Plutonian fallout in and of itself.  Since this New Moon, Sun, and Venus in Capricorn sextile Chiron in Pisces, which is also trined by Mars in Scorpio, what hurts are dredged up under Pluto’s influence can yield potent lessons that increase our healing wisdom, compassion, and sense of universal connection, and we are most likely to gain revelations regarding wounds incurred in relation to desire and intimacy.

Mars in Scorpio inconjunct Uranus in Aries during this New Moon makes for sudden surprises that can be jarring to our energy and drive, and with Mars still in orb to its recent conjunction with Jupiter, Mars in Scoprio’s intense focus and motivation continues to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is a time to enlist extra Capricornian caution when driving or engaged in other undertakings in which an accident could have fatal consequences, especially since with both Uranus and Mars in signs that Mars rules, we may find ourselves so focused on our goals that we fail to see potential dangers, or do not give them the respect they deserve.  Since this inconjunct is part of a Learning Triangle with the Sun, Moon, and Venus unexpected lessons are emphasized here, particularly those that call into question our desires and what we do to attain them, with both our conscious and unconscious selves poised to make use of whatever wisdom we may gain from these experiences.  Mars gains the benefit of the sextile to the Sun and Moon in this configuration, making us conscious of our focus and drive while feeling intuitively aligned with that awareness.  But this New Moon and Venus are squaring Uranus, making us equally aware of how tenuous our position is right now.  This is an unsettling aspect, to be sure, and we may find our moods and affections flip-flopping as a result or unusually self-indulgent, sending us in pursuit of newness and excitement with potential frustration and flaring tempers when we find our our desires thwarted.

The Sun, Moon, and Venus all in the last decanate of Capricorn emphasize patient ambition in pursuit of our desires, and Saturn, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith all in the first decanate of Capricorn emphasize patience and persistence even more, with a methodical outlook that transcends temporary fads and is not impressed by Moon/Venus-square-Uranus impulsiveness.  But Uranus in Aries is the height of impatience, eager to start endeavors yet often hard-pressed to keep up the momentum necessary to continue, and we may find ourselves tripping over sudden changes in our feelings and emotional attention-span.  Therefore, whatever seeds of intention we decide to plant at this New Moon, we need to recognize that the dogpile of planets in Capricorn may still give us all of the patience and determination in the world despite whatever emotional surprises the Uranian square may cook up, but they also make it likely that what we choose to pursue now will require much time and tenacity to see to the end, with all-too-many obstacles to test us along the way.

Mercury conjuncts Black Moon Lilith in the first decanate of Capricorn during this New Moon, putting our thoughts and communication in alignment with divine will and giving us a certain degree of emotional distance in our thinking.  Lilith can force us to confront our desires by tempting us with what we cannot attain until we have gained a certain degree of emotional maturity, often learning some very difficult lessons in the process.  There is also a Uranian tone to Lilith’s insights, a primal and electric intuition that is both independent and impersonal, helping us to be more objective about our feelings.  Mercury is also still conjunct Saturn at this time, so our thoughts continue to have a certain gravitas to steady the Uranian influence, and in combination with Black Moon Lilith can create a powerful sense of fatefulness in our ideas and communication now.  Mercury in Capricorn carefully brings together all of the facts to bear upon a subject before arriving at any conclusion, creating an impression of slow thoughtfulness that can be mistaken for a lack of mental dexterity, yet in fact Mercury in Capricorn’s methodical thought-process repeatedly yields the right answer.  If we need to carefully think through all aspects of a plan before making any decision, and do so with mindfulness of the long-term consequences of whatever decision we will make, this Mercury transit is the time to do it.  There is the potential for the Saturn/Mercury/Black Moon Lilith conjunction to yield a somewhat bleak and depressive outlook if we let Saturn’s influence become more weight than motivator, so sensitive souls would do well to remember that and keep a sense of humor on-hand to balance out such a hefty dose of Saturnine seriousness.

Astrology Update, Full Moon, January 1st, 2018 (Wolf Moon): Drinking Desire

The upcoming Full Moon on January 1st is an emotional powerhouse, starting off the New Year with a deep exploration of where our feelings and our attractions vie for prominence in our relationships, with our deepest feelings and connections driving the actions that will make all the difference as we forge our karmic paths.

Full Moons are the culmination of energies and intentions set in motion at the preceding New Moon.  In this case, that would have been the December 18th, 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius, which was conjunct Saturn at 29 degrees, amplifying the emotional impact of the lessons of Saturn in Sagittarius over the past few years, just before Saturn’s entry into Capricorn the next day.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but Saturn’s presence emphasized the need to complete old business in order to start with the new, including the necessity of getting rid of what we no longer need, letting go of habits and relationships that no longer serve us.  This emphasis was amplified by the Winter Solstice following closely on the heels of that New Moon, with the Sun and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees Capricorn, a conjunction that last occurred in 1664, giving the Winter Solstice a fateful feeling that the newfound energy of practical manifestation stirred by Saturn’s entry into Capricorn would affect our paths not simply for that day or the upcoming year, but for centuries and lifetimes to come.

This Full Moon therefore is the emotional counterpoint to that fateful and achievement-oriented New Moon, putting what we are manifesting in our practical endeavors in the context of our feelings.  Saturn is about lengthy, laborious processes, and whatever we felt called to set in motion at the December New Moon and the Winter Solstice needs to be something that fills our hearts and souls completely, or we simply won’t be able to maintain the will to grind through all obstacles for however long it takes us to complete this task.  Saturn is also about karma, the physical and metaphysical reactions to what we think and do and say in this world.  There is a weight and portentousness to the goals we aspire to under Saturn’s guidance.  Do we really want to take the karmic risks that such goals entail without actually feeling deeply about them?   How do we feel about the legacies of our actions over the course of our lifetimes, and the lifetimes thereafter?

Since the Moon is in Cancer those endeavors must also be seen in the context of our families and communities.  It’s not enough to set big goals in the physical world, nor to have the Saturnine/Capricornian willingness to climb any mountain to achieve them; the goals we set need to stir our feelings deeply but they also need to enhance our sense of interpersonal connection, or they’re not really worth a damn.  How does what we are doing affect those we care about?  How does it affect the people who nurture us, even those within our neighborhoods and social circles whose choices nurture us without our knowing them?  And how do we feel about the ripples of consequence that our actions will have in the larger world?

The Full Moon opposing Venus puts an emphasis on relationships, with full, sentimental Cancerian emotions but also a practical, earthy approach by Venus; there will be a desire for security and sticking to familiar ground.  Wild, new relationships or over-stimulating surroundings are not favored by the Capricornian Venus, nor by the homebody Cancerian Moon, yet there is an amplification of sexual desire created by Venus’ sextile to Mars, who also trines the Moon as part of a Kite formation, so both our emotions and our need for physical affection are feeling the call to action now, and we may find ourselves driven to extremes by the Scorpionic Mars attempting to reconcile the disparity between the two.  The Moon/Venus opposition creates a challenge between our emotions and our style of relating and experiencing affection, and there is a very real possibility of misplaced affections, unwanted sexual attention, or unrequited love.  However, the Kite formation that this is a part of offers the keys to meeting this challenge, the cosmic and personal tools available for use in solving the problems it draws our attention to, and relationships that come under the spotlight now have a good potential to grow and be strengthened as a result.

Within the body of the Kite is a Grand Water Trine between the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter/Mars in Scorpio.  The Moon trine Neptune creates romantic devotion, though this may be based more on fantasy than reality.  There is a self-sacrificing quality to this devotion, a desire to immerse oneself in the beloved, whether that beloved is a person or a creative project or a spiritual path or a social cause.  Since the trine is a harmonious aspect, the Neptunian urge to dissolve boundaries is less likely to be damaging than with a hard aspect, but it can still make for some potentially unsettling experiences, especially on the subconscious level, and particularly sensitive souls may feel the need to hide away at home or in other safe, familiar surroundings.  Given that this Full Moon follows on the heels of New Year’s Eve revelry, there is a heightened likelihood that overindulgence on that night leads to the need to stay home the next day and nurse one’s hangover, whether physical or emotional…

Intuition is heightened by this trine, with Jupiter amplifying the intuitive connection between spiritual Neptune and the instinctive, emotional Moon, and giving us a sense of faith in the truth of what we feel.  Mars in the mix gives courage and the impetus to action, with the sextile from Mars to Venus intensifying sexual attraction, and since Mars is in Scorpio, one of the two signs he rules, his action under this Full Moon is focused, directed, potentially hidden, and on occasion even ruthless.  The conjunction with Jupiter encourages grand gestures with deep meaning and impact, not simply big, showy displays with no substance.  Mars in Scorpio is not interested in half-measures!

Jupiter trining Neptune not only amplifies intuition but also generosity toward those less fortunate than ourselves.  The downside of this is the potential to be taken for a ride by unscrupulous and deceptive types, emotional vampires and addicts seeking a fix, or authority figures abusing their power, rather than those who are truly deserving of our largesse.  On the upside is the powerful spiritual awareness created by this trine, an awareness that is not merely cerebral but instead opens our hearts to a larger feeling for humanity as a whole and our universal interconnectedness.  Given the Moon/Venus challenge on a personal level, this is a time when we may gain a heightened understanding of how the personal is political, and how the challenges we face one-on-one mirror the challenges we face as a species.  Thankfully, that Grand Water Trine in this kite gives us the emotional tools for meeting those challenges, so we may well gain keys to solving larger world problems from the lessons we learn in our personal relationships at this time.

The Jupiter/Mars conjunction squaring the North Node stimulates and amplifies action in relation to our karmic paths, further emphasizing the sense of fatefulness carrying forward from Saturn’s touch on the New Moon and coming into fullness now, and underscoring the mirroring action between our personal relationship experiences and our connections on a planetary and universal scale.  Whatever intensity and conflict we may experience at this time has the impetus to be resolved with love and compassion, and we are likely to feel the impact of that resolution for some time to come.

Astrology Update, March 10th, 2017: Breaking Ground for Re-Planting

The Moon in Leo starts the day off with a trine to Uranus in Aries in the very wee hours, putting our unconscious in alignment with our futurist leanings and sudden changes in our lives.  If we are asleep at that hour, our dreams may be tumultuous but more likely to be revelatory than bad.  Others of us may find that we could not get to sleep at all for a few hours after midnight, or that we could not sleep consistently during the night, but since this is a supportive trine aspect, we may have found that being awake was actually a benefit of some kind, perhaps creatively or intellectually stimulating, and the more inventive among us may have hit upon a eureka moment or two.

Later this morning the Moon in Leo trined Saturn in Sagittarius, giving our emotions and instincts a boost from our more disciplined side.  Our feelings this morning may have turned serious, but not likely to negatively so since this is a harmonious trine.  Rather, we may find a greater state of ease and flow between what we feel and what we need to do, our outlook on life now sober and steady, more ready and able to work within the confines of reality to achieve aims that express our true selves.  We are likely to have taken pride in our practical achievements at this time, especially those supporting our larger belief system and our sense of social responsibility.  We may also have found ourselves more easily working around or even through our insecurities and fears, and any understanding gained about such matters during this time has the potential to help us effect lasting emotional change.  The Moon turned void-of-course with that last aspect, so we are likely to have fared best if we stuck to routine during this time, allowing ourselves to process these final lessons of the Leo lunar transit deep in the unconscious while drifting on autopilot through our conscious world.

That Moon/Saturn trine and void-of-course helped set the stage for a more practical tone to our instincts and emotions as the Moon enters Virgo this afternoon, making us more concerned with health, growth, and process, and all of the little details that go into perfecting whatever our hearts are most concerned with.  The Moon in Virgo is actually a little uncomfortable with overt expressions of emotion, preferring a more intellectual approach to feeling, since like Gemini this sign is ruled by Mercury and like Gemini Virgo would rather treat emotion as a thought experiment, a subject of study rather than a visceral experience.  Still, human feelings don’t tend to respond well to being boxed up, so we are more likely to feel our emotions through our bodies now, and those of us who tend to stifle them may well find ourselves feeling under the weather during this transit, as the Virgo Moon highlights the connection between our emotional health and our physical health, and the breakdowns that result when either is not respected.  Virgo is scientific and fact-finding in orientation, precise in language, so academic study and research are favored now.  Virgo is also prone to perfectionism and can be hyper-critical, yet also thin-skinned and fussy, and even prone to martyrdom, so we may find ourselves more likely to get embroiled in conflicts that turn on the smallest of details, or feeling as though no-one understands us, used and abused by those we thought cared about us.  Virgo may not be comfortable with emotion, but Virgo is still highly sensitive, after all.  Nonetheless, Virgo is also generally well-meaning, if perhaps a bit tactless about its perceived path to perfection – typically Virgoan criticism is meant to help, even if that help isn’t being sought after.  Navigating this Moon then requires us to recognize that what seems perfectly obvious to us may make absolutely no sense to anyone else, and more often than not we have to let go of our desire for perfection in favor of what is actually possible in a real world with finite time and a host of other people with differing viewpoints.  Thankfully, Virgo is a friendly and likeable sign, and highly adaptable, so keeping a light touch will make all the difference during this transit.

Late this afternoon the Moon in Virgo trines Mars in Taurus, giving us a lovely opportunity to get into a flow state with practical matters, with steady energy and focus on achievement in the material realm and an instinct for how to make those achievements work out just right.  Even if we can’t achieve perfection now we can come much closer to it, building our personal realms steadily and most likely enjoying the process.  With the Virgo’s ruler Mercury in Pisces, we may find that our efforts include an understanding of what we need to give up in order to gain what we desire, and with Taurus’ ruler Venus in Aries, we are likely to be simultaneously more aware of the need for action yet more concerned with making sure that said action is what we really want.  Since those sign rulers are highlighting the ongoing concern with personal needs in social realms that has been a theme these past couple of months, this trine is a great opportunity to create more understanding of that theme through today’s mundane activities – the practical steps we take to clear ground today may yield greater relational wisdom for the future.

This evening Mercury conjuncts Chiron in Pisces, so the Virgo Moon’s concern with health has been amplified today, reaching a peak tonight.  Our thoughts (and also our emotions through Mercury’s rulership of Virgo) are confronted with our patterns of injury and trauma, the old wounds we don’t know how to heal in ourselves, yet through our experiences can use to help others similarly afflicted.  Tonight is a time for communicating about what ails us, and listening to others with kindness and sensitivity, allowing our intuition free reign to make sense of the larger picture, seeing our own situation through others’ eyes.  Mutual healing may come now through these discussions, and a degree of release from patterns that have previously kept us imprisoned.  Of course, since Virgo feels emotions bodily and Mercury rules Virgo, some of us may be confronted with more physical manifestations of our patterns of pain.  Tonight is definitely a time to take things slowly and make time for self-care, exercising compassion for ourselves and others, remembering that even when there are breakthroughs the healing process tends to be slow, and it rarely travels in a straight line.

How all of that is part of our karmic path and affects our goals for the future is getting highlighted tonight via the Moon’s conjunction to the North Node in Virgo.  Our emotions that are so caught up in process and being influenced by Mercury’s encounter with our pain and need for healing are now confronted with the Virgoan vision for our future selves, and we may find ourselves needing to come to grips with necessary adjustments resulting from our past patterns of injury, and recognize where and how we perpetuate our own martyrdom.  Tonight, as we consciously study our limitations we may also unconsciously study our potential, gaining a greater understanding of the whole pattern that the two create together.  For so many of us, this is not likely to be a fun point in our journey, but it may very well lead to the breakthroughs we most need.

Shortly thereafter, the Moon in Virgo squares Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, forcing us into an unconscious confrontation with our shadow selves in relation to the ingrained beliefs that have created the patterns we are seeing tonight, and bringing our unconscious reactions closer to conscious understanding.  We may find ourselves experiencing the powerful consequences of a conflict between the spirit and the body, who are meant to operate together but who are constantly driven apart by our more destructive socially-programmed belief patterns.  Parallels between the damage to our society and our planet may make themselves apparent in the damage to our bodies and minds, damage that we have to muster the courage to heal for ourselves.  Continuing to endure this damage in order to live up to societal expectations is just more martyrdom, and we’ve had enough of that.  Black Moon Lilith here is forcing us to experience just how awful our chains have become and how we became so enslaved in the first place, and the Moon in Virgo forces us to feel that enslavement physically in order to become aware of just what process is needed to throw our shackles off.  Like a landscape blasted by industrial pollution, our psyches and our bodies have suffered long enough.  Even in the midst of these poisons, we can still bring growth and vitality back, albeit slowly.  And though our emotions and instincts tonight may feel deeply, viscerally challenged by how toxic the soil we are growing in has become, still the Virgo Moon is an excellent gardener.

Astrology of February 5th, 2017: Growth and Introspection

Today Jupiter stations retrograde, with the upcoming retrograde period lasting until June 9th and with the shadow lasting until September 9th, so the whole day today feels the pull as the 2nd largest gravitational force in our solar system appears to halt in the sky, in preparation to seemingly move backward in relation to the Earth, retracing his steps of the past few months through the Zodiac.  Now is the time to reconsider the meaning of good fortune in our lives, how we achieve it and how we hold ourselves back from it.  Do we have faith in our ability to attain what we desire?  If not, why not?  Now is the time to start assessing these things, particularly in relation to whatever areas we have been working on most in hope of growth.  Keep in mind that Jupiter governs spiritual matters, so this is a time to go within in search of our answers, not into the outer world.  This introspection is necessary to prepare us for the rewards that we may reap when Jupiter turns direct, for we cannot have our harvest come in without creating the necessary space to receive it.

The day starts off with the Moon in Gemini squaring the North Node in Virgo in the early morning hours, adding to the emphasis of personal growth in service of our soul’s path.  While the square aspect is a challenge, when it is the Nodal axis that is so challenged we have the opportunity to burn through old karma that holds us back and if we integrate the energies of the square well we can make great leaps forward in achieving our soul’s purpose in this life.  With this particular square, the challenge is between what we communicate and what attention we give to the process of growth, our ability to skim through vast quantities of information in search of what we need versus our ability to focus on the tiniest details in the hopes of perfecting our process.  Remember that both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury, currently traveling through deep-thinking Capricorn.  We are likely to feel the need to balance the big picture with the microcosm today, and while it may be a rough journey chances are that it’s a worthwhile one.

Shortly thereafter, the Moon in Gemini sextiles Mars in Aries, and Mars helps fuel our communication and knowledge assimilation with a burst of assertive Aries energy.  We may find ourselves unusually active for a Sunday morning, but this being the most supportive aspect of the day, we would do well to take advantage of this energy to learn as much as we can and get things done before this afternoon when the Moon in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces, leading us to want to escape reality for a while.  If all that does is lead to some pleasant daydreaming or binge-watching Netflix, well and good, but this being a square aspect, our feelings are likely to be more challenging, leading us to instinctively seek out some means of actively retreating into fantasy that may well result in drinking or other addictive behaviors.  We may also find our heads fogged up just when we thought we were hitting our stride with the impetus from the Moon/Mars sextile, though we could just as well have tuckered ourselves out by overdoing it during that period, and some downtime to rest and soothe our over-active imaginations may be seriously needed by nightfall.  There is a very real possibility of delusion or deception here, so we need to be mindful and chose whom we believe during this time with care (including ourselves).

Of course, since Jupiter and Neptune are the classical and transcendental rulers of Pisces, respectively, there is a double emphasis here on spiritual matters, and with Jupiter still stationing and then turning retrograde late tonight, chances are that we are going to need some means to slow the pace of the frenetic Gemini Moon stimulating our unconscious and retreat to our dream worlds earlier in the night than usual.  Speaking of dreaming, this is the night for it, so those of us wishing to get a jump on sussing out the next step in our growth during this Jupiter Retrograde period would do well to meditate on our questions before retiring and be sure to write down our dreams in the morning.  Our unconscious minds will be more likely to find answers for us in sleep tonight than during the waking day preceding.

Inaugural Post: On Lunar Nodes and Karmic Process

I almost didn’t launch this blog this week.  After getting the basic site structure worked out enough to feel comfortable with posting to it, I was still experiencing a bit of perfectionist discomfort about it, which of course resulted in writer’s block for a couple of days.  Thursday night I thought I’d take advantage of the Venus-Jupiter trine’s favorable environment for writing and publishing to help myself get over my nervousness.  But then an old heartbreak walked back through the door, one of those fateful individuals who hits all the right spots to really wake you up and make you see what needs to change in your life, but who doesn’t want to stick around for the transformation.

That fateful feeling is like a punch in the gut every time I encounter this individual.  In particular, the synastry between us triggers the axis of each person’s Lunar Nodes repeatedly, powerfully.  No matter how I try to remain calm and collected in the presence of this person, that Nodal axis dynamic and the feedback loop generated by all of the planetary interactions activated by it send me into a mental and emotional state of overdrive, not particularly conducive to writing, or at least not to writing anything coherent.

Now, like many other Cardinal signs whose lives have been turned upside down by the series of Pluto-Uranus squares grinding away at our habitual patterns and interpersonal structures since 2012, I’ve gone through a bit of turmoil over the past few years.  Personal relationships, residence, livelihood, life purpose, will to live, you name it – all have gone onto Pluto’s anvil to be tempered mercilessly by the pounding hammer of Uranus.  Tempered, or broken and thrown back into the fire.  The desire to start this blog is part of what emerged from that process.  Part of my means of putting my life back together has been intensifying my study of astrology, and exploring those studies further through my art, and part of regaining a sense of purpose has been the will to share what I am learning through this ongoing process.

Thursday night’s encounter temporarily derailed my writing, but like every such encounter it sent me deeper into my studies in a way that clarified my own karmic path along the Nodal axis in my natal chart, via the shared house placement of my South Node with my Pluto.  Part of the synastry dynamic that I mentioned is a Yod created by this fateful individual’s Mars, Jupiter, and Sun having the focal point of my Pluto in the 12th house, wide-orb conjunct to this person’s Moon, which is medium-orb conjunct to my South Node.  My Pluto is wide-orb opposed to my Moon and medium-orb opposed to my Mars (wide-orb conjunct to my North Node), and more closely opposed to my Chiron just below my Descendent in my 6th house, which is in medium-orb opposition to my Uranus near-conjunct to my Ascendant.  And my Pluto has multiple other contacts in my natal chart as well, including my Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Neptune.  So, anything that triggers my Pluto by extension triggers the majority of my planets and both of my luminaries.  It sets my chart thrumming with Pluto’s compulsive energy, but from the subconscious darkness of the 12th house.  So, I don’t get to consciously see what’s happening, but thanks to Chiron so close to my Descendent and in a crazy bundle of oppositions along the AC/DC line profoundly heightening my kinaesthesia (what some people describe as ESP of the body), I get to physically (and emotionally, via the Moon) feel it ALL.  It’s a bit like an ongoing state of low-level electrocution, without seeing where the current is coming from.  Since this other person’s planets/luminary that are activating those Plutonic compulsions are highly active, Yang-oriented forces, being in that person’s presence is like having lightning striking into the darkness of my subconscious, leaving a trail of after-images in the form of compulsive effects on my own planets and luminaries, that I can trace to their original energetic sources of action (Mars), faith (Jupiter), and ego (Sun).  What I saw on Thursday night illuminated where I have hitherto failed in the karmic balancing act of my Nodal axis.

With a Libran Ascendant, the houses of my natal chart all fall into the signs opposite the signs that normally rule those houses.  (Thus, the integration of opposites is an ongoing theme in my art and spiritual/intuitive practice.)  So particularly with the Nodal axis, trying to determine what I’m supposed to be doing to fulfill my karmic purpose has been an exercise in contradictions.  The 12th house is ruled by Pisces and the 6th by Virgo, so the typical advice for someone with the North Node in the 6th house is to learn to pay attention to the practical details of daily living and devote one’s life to service of others – medical professionals often have active 6th houses, for example (and I’ve done my fair share of exploring medical professions).  But with the North Node in Pisces, the standard advice usually runs more along the lines of learning not to get bogged down in details, learning to go with the flow, dream a bit more, cultivate one’s sensitivity and spirituality, etc., etc.  Determining how to combine these lessons of opposing signs has proven daunting.  All too often, when I’ve striven to tend more to day-to-day details, I fall back on familiar South Node Pluto-in-Virgo OCD tendencies, especially when trying to be in service to others (and with Mars in Pisces, the South Node in the 12th house, and asteroid Lilith in the 8th house, boy do I love devoting my energies to hard-luck cases!), and then of course feel sorry for myself when I inevitably wind up martyred to the cause.   Yet doing the dreamy go-with-the-flow routine tends to result in not getting the bills paid.

This time, as the lightning flash of that fateful Yod electrified my subconscious again, the effort to resist the usual Plutonic compulsive responses led me to refocus my attention on Pluto’s 12th house cell mate: the South Node.  All too often when we are challenged we fall back into the old, familiar behavior patterns of the South Node, and I’m no exception – the more that I feel challenged the more I try to impose Virgoan order on my understanding of the cosmos, tackling grandiose projects in microscopic detail, serving big causes via day-to-day organization, and getting further and further from a sense of real purpose in the process.  I’ve spent too much of my life trying to serve people by falling back on my Virgoan South Node skills, rather than growing into Piscean North Node expression.  I’ve consciously focused on the Virgoan 6th house path, but subconsciously have struggled with the Piscean means of walking it.

Which is where this blog post comes in.  Part of what has held me up for the past few days that this site has been ready for me to post on has been an uncertainty about the usefulness of it – a Virgoan concern for the perceived lack of practicality in an astrological blog based on personal anecdotes and dreams and poems and artwork, and not a whole lot of instruction, or predictive astrology, or celebrity examples, or tidy saleable packages of natal charts delineations and synastry analysis.  Not that I don’t enjoy helping people understand natal and synastry charts, because doing that is what got me excited about astrology in the first place, but for me that is more of a one-on-one interaction, face-to-face or via Skype, not a written “product” to sell.  And without a clear focus on the standard trappings of the professional astrologer, up until now I was feeling very concerned about whether I would provide astrological information to readers in a useful, linear fashion.  But now I think I nearly missed the point of doing this in the first place.  There are plenty of astrology blogs out there, some instructive, some less so.  Writing yet another blog full of predictions and linear analysis won’t fulfill my 6th house North Node calling to service.  But surrendering to the Piscean stream of consciousness in this path just might.
