Astrology Update, 3rd Quarter Moon, January 8th, 2018: Lantern Light

There is a kind of paradox in the January 8th, 2018 3rd Quarter Moon in Libra, appropriate to the eternal balancing act of the sign.  When Uranus in Aries stationed direct the day after the 1st of January’s two Full Moons, it ushered in an unusual time when all of the planets are currently direct, free from the hesitation and hiccups of the retrograde influence.  In combination with Saturn’s recent entry into Capricorn, one of the two signs that it rules, it would seem as though the universe is aligned in favor of movement and getting things done.  The 3rd Quarter Moon, however, is a time when we have been busy disseminating whatever intentions we planted at the New Moon and saw come into fruition at the Full Moon, and our energy is now beginning to peter out.  Ironically, despite the forward motion and impetus to action of all of the planets, the 3rd Quarter Moon is a time for review, reassessment, and refinement of what actions we have taken toward our goals, similar to the need for such review during retrograde periods.  The combination of the will to action and the need for review make this an especially good time to take actions related to shedding things we no longer need, breaking bad habits, and removing unwanted influences, so that whatever intentions we plant at the upcoming New Moon will be able to grow unimpeded.

January 6th saw Mars conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio, amplifying our need for action in some of the deepest and most intense areas of our lives, and this conjunction is still in orb to have a powerful effect on this 3rd Quarter Moon.  Scorpio is emotional deep water, swirling around our drive, our ambition, our aggression, that is now touched with the fervor of faith.  Neptune in Pisces is still trined to Jupiter, lending imagination to this brew, course-correcting our trajectories through our dreams, and bringing a sense of selflessness to our actions – we are more willing to act on behalf of others now and in service to the greater good, and more likely to want whatever we do to be meaningful on a deeper and more universal scale.  But this 3rd Quarter Moon also sees Mars sextile to Pluto, and Jupiter moving toward his exact sextile with Pluto in the darkness shortly before the New Moon.  Our will to action is powerful under the Plutonian influence, and as a result this is an especially good time to take action to correct power imbalances in our own lives and in our larger society.

Given that the 3rd Quarter Moon is a square aspect between the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Libra, there is a challenge here between our need for accomplishment and our instinctive desire not to upset the peace, our will to go-it-alone up the mountainside and that desire for companionship that got so stirred up at the Full Moon.  Social Libra is the sign most desirous of harmony that is also most likely to find that harmony all-too-easily disrupted, so the tendency of the 1st and 3rd Quarter Moons to unsettle us with their emphasis on change finds our instincts especially sensitive to such disruptions now.  We have this powerhouse of capability with Jupiter, Mars, Pluto, and Neptune in supportive aspects with each other, and a weary and uncertain Moon making us instinctually unwilling to rock the boat, even when the universe suggests that it is in serious need of rocking.  And thanks to the trine from Mercury to Uranus and the square from Mercury to Chiron, both on the 6th and both still in effect, our minds at least are primed to do some of that rocking, able to learn from Chironian discomfort and gain insight from the rapid changes that Uranus triggers, even if those changes are the last thing the sensitive Libran Moon feels equipped to handle.

Libra’s ruler Venus conjuncts the Sun today, and at the time of the 3rd Quarter Moon she is close enough to be considered cazimi, “in the heart of the Sun.”  In the few degrees leading up to this rarefied state, Venus has been considered combust, “under the rays of the Sun,” her loving and companionable qualities hidden, face and form burnt, uncertain of her own power, and hesitant to receive affection.  That said, Venus is strong in Capricorn, well-equipped to endure the Sun’s fire in pursuit of her more radiant self.  For once she reaches the cazimi degrees, all of her impurities and uncertainties are burnt away, and she shines with the brilliance imparted by the awareness of the Sun.  Both the Sun and Venus sextiled Jupiter a few hours before the 3rd Quarter Moon, bringing a sense of faith and optimism to this new awareness of our more evolved capacity for love and connection.  Now is the time to recognize who we have become in pursuit of the affection that became such an emotional challenge during the Full Moon’s opposition to Venus.  And because the Sun and Venus both conjunct Pluto and Mars the day after this 3rd Quarter Moon, now is the time to recognize the power and urgency of our connections as well, with all of their practical and emotional impact boosted to the hilt at a time when our instincts turn toward peace and quiet.  With the Moon squaring Sun, Venus, and Pluto at this time, we are challenged to accept affection, to believe that we are worthy to have love exert its power in our lives.  In the cold of winter, heading into the dark of the Moon, Venus in the heart of the Sun becomes our sustaining light, drawing our reluctant hearts forward to press on through the night.

Astrology Update, Full Moon, January 1st, 2018 (Wolf Moon): Drinking Desire

The upcoming Full Moon on January 1st is an emotional powerhouse, starting off the New Year with a deep exploration of where our feelings and our attractions vie for prominence in our relationships, with our deepest feelings and connections driving the actions that will make all the difference as we forge our karmic paths.

Full Moons are the culmination of energies and intentions set in motion at the preceding New Moon.  In this case, that would have been the December 18th, 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius, which was conjunct Saturn at 29 degrees, amplifying the emotional impact of the lessons of Saturn in Sagittarius over the past few years, just before Saturn’s entry into Capricorn the next day.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but Saturn’s presence emphasized the need to complete old business in order to start with the new, including the necessity of getting rid of what we no longer need, letting go of habits and relationships that no longer serve us.  This emphasis was amplified by the Winter Solstice following closely on the heels of that New Moon, with the Sun and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees Capricorn, a conjunction that last occurred in 1664, giving the Winter Solstice a fateful feeling that the newfound energy of practical manifestation stirred by Saturn’s entry into Capricorn would affect our paths not simply for that day or the upcoming year, but for centuries and lifetimes to come.

This Full Moon therefore is the emotional counterpoint to that fateful and achievement-oriented New Moon, putting what we are manifesting in our practical endeavors in the context of our feelings.  Saturn is about lengthy, laborious processes, and whatever we felt called to set in motion at the December New Moon and the Winter Solstice needs to be something that fills our hearts and souls completely, or we simply won’t be able to maintain the will to grind through all obstacles for however long it takes us to complete this task.  Saturn is also about karma, the physical and metaphysical reactions to what we think and do and say in this world.  There is a weight and portentousness to the goals we aspire to under Saturn’s guidance.  Do we really want to take the karmic risks that such goals entail without actually feeling deeply about them?   How do we feel about the legacies of our actions over the course of our lifetimes, and the lifetimes thereafter?

Since the Moon is in Cancer those endeavors must also be seen in the context of our families and communities.  It’s not enough to set big goals in the physical world, nor to have the Saturnine/Capricornian willingness to climb any mountain to achieve them; the goals we set need to stir our feelings deeply but they also need to enhance our sense of interpersonal connection, or they’re not really worth a damn.  How does what we are doing affect those we care about?  How does it affect the people who nurture us, even those within our neighborhoods and social circles whose choices nurture us without our knowing them?  And how do we feel about the ripples of consequence that our actions will have in the larger world?

The Full Moon opposing Venus puts an emphasis on relationships, with full, sentimental Cancerian emotions but also a practical, earthy approach by Venus; there will be a desire for security and sticking to familiar ground.  Wild, new relationships or over-stimulating surroundings are not favored by the Capricornian Venus, nor by the homebody Cancerian Moon, yet there is an amplification of sexual desire created by Venus’ sextile to Mars, who also trines the Moon as part of a Kite formation, so both our emotions and our need for physical affection are feeling the call to action now, and we may find ourselves driven to extremes by the Scorpionic Mars attempting to reconcile the disparity between the two.  The Moon/Venus opposition creates a challenge between our emotions and our style of relating and experiencing affection, and there is a very real possibility of misplaced affections, unwanted sexual attention, or unrequited love.  However, the Kite formation that this is a part of offers the keys to meeting this challenge, the cosmic and personal tools available for use in solving the problems it draws our attention to, and relationships that come under the spotlight now have a good potential to grow and be strengthened as a result.

Within the body of the Kite is a Grand Water Trine between the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter/Mars in Scorpio.  The Moon trine Neptune creates romantic devotion, though this may be based more on fantasy than reality.  There is a self-sacrificing quality to this devotion, a desire to immerse oneself in the beloved, whether that beloved is a person or a creative project or a spiritual path or a social cause.  Since the trine is a harmonious aspect, the Neptunian urge to dissolve boundaries is less likely to be damaging than with a hard aspect, but it can still make for some potentially unsettling experiences, especially on the subconscious level, and particularly sensitive souls may feel the need to hide away at home or in other safe, familiar surroundings.  Given that this Full Moon follows on the heels of New Year’s Eve revelry, there is a heightened likelihood that overindulgence on that night leads to the need to stay home the next day and nurse one’s hangover, whether physical or emotional…

Intuition is heightened by this trine, with Jupiter amplifying the intuitive connection between spiritual Neptune and the instinctive, emotional Moon, and giving us a sense of faith in the truth of what we feel.  Mars in the mix gives courage and the impetus to action, with the sextile from Mars to Venus intensifying sexual attraction, and since Mars is in Scorpio, one of the two signs he rules, his action under this Full Moon is focused, directed, potentially hidden, and on occasion even ruthless.  The conjunction with Jupiter encourages grand gestures with deep meaning and impact, not simply big, showy displays with no substance.  Mars in Scorpio is not interested in half-measures!

Jupiter trining Neptune not only amplifies intuition but also generosity toward those less fortunate than ourselves.  The downside of this is the potential to be taken for a ride by unscrupulous and deceptive types, emotional vampires and addicts seeking a fix, or authority figures abusing their power, rather than those who are truly deserving of our largesse.  On the upside is the powerful spiritual awareness created by this trine, an awareness that is not merely cerebral but instead opens our hearts to a larger feeling for humanity as a whole and our universal interconnectedness.  Given the Moon/Venus challenge on a personal level, this is a time when we may gain a heightened understanding of how the personal is political, and how the challenges we face one-on-one mirror the challenges we face as a species.  Thankfully, that Grand Water Trine in this kite gives us the emotional tools for meeting those challenges, so we may well gain keys to solving larger world problems from the lessons we learn in our personal relationships at this time.

The Jupiter/Mars conjunction squaring the North Node stimulates and amplifies action in relation to our karmic paths, further emphasizing the sense of fatefulness carrying forward from Saturn’s touch on the New Moon and coming into fullness now, and underscoring the mirroring action between our personal relationship experiences and our connections on a planetary and universal scale.  Whatever intensity and conflict we may experience at this time has the impetus to be resolved with love and compassion, and we are likely to feel the impact of that resolution for some time to come.

Tarot for January 19th, 2017: The Lovers

Today’s Tarot card is (VI) The Lovers.

Ruled by Gemini, this card continues the mutable sign influence of today’s square between Mars in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius while offering a symbolic tool for working with these challenging energies.

The Thoth deck’s version of The Lovers depicts a marriage of The Empress and Emperor (Major Arcana cards III & IV) whose clothing, skin colour, and regalia indicate that in addition to representing masculine and feminine principles they are representing differing alchemical elements (water and fire, based on the presence of the grail and the spear as well as the eagle and the lion in the lower corners, plus earth and air, based on the serpents and bees on their robes).  They also represent Sun and Moon, and with all of these elements and forces present, this marriage is that which produces Creation itself.  The marriage is performed by the Hermit (Major Arcana card IX) rather than the Hierophant (Major Arcana card V), indicating that this more of an internal, mystical process than one sanctioned by church and state.  In the background we see an archway of swords, symbols of discernment and analysis, tools in the process of synthesis taking place, and the correlation of this card with the swords is further emphasized by its association with the Hebrew letter Zain (“sword”).  We see below the cosmic egg and the serpent of regeneration (together referred to as the Orphic egg) which appear on both the Hermit and Universe cards (Major Arcana cards IX & XXI), with wings on this egg reminiscent of the Hadit figure on the Aeon (Major Arcana card XX).  And above all hovers the figure of Cupid, reminding us that love strikes without warning.

This love, however, is not one of sentimental hearts and flowers, but rather the alchemical process of uniting seemingly opposite beings, principles, and materials.  Love is not simply an emotion but a state of being that requires work to maintain, and like alchemy can break us down into our core elements and recombine them.  When we enter into relationship with another, we mirror each other, each person reflecting to the other the qualities that we see and experience through them.  We learn more about ourselves in the process of coming to deeply know another, and gain a greater understanding of wholeness as a result of the acceptance that love engenders.

That acceptance doesn’t make the path easy.  It does not gloss over our disagreeable traits.  Negotiating between conflicting ideas and behaviors still requires compromise, and communication, and takes time and effort.  But within each thing we like is the seed of what we do not like, and vice versa; for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and all things in creation have their mirrors and their opposites.  Thus, existence demands balance.  The Lovers card inspires us to work with conflicting forces in our lives to find the common ground between them.  In the case of Mars and Saturn, some common ground can be found between focus and discipline, which can be combined in service to a common goal.

The Lovers card also indicates a choice, a turning point, and asks that we carefully consider all components of a situation before determining what use we will make of them and the direction of our decision.  Because this is a Major Arcana card, the choices we are being asked to make at this time are not minor – they will have profound consequences for our future.  And whatever our choices are now, they are likely to have significant costs, but the cost of ignoring our soul’s calling at this time could well haunt us for the rest of our lives.

Tarot for December 25th, 2016: Abundance

december-25th-2016-abundance

Today’s Tarot card is the 3 of Cups (Abundance), a lovely, auspicious card to go with today’s Venusian energy (nice to see it upright again!).

As noted when this card showed up reversed in early December, the 3 of Cups is the territory of Mercury in Cancer, opposite sign to Capricorn where Mercury is currently retrograde.  Cancer is all about emotional sensitivity and creating safe space in which to explore that sensitivity, and Mercury in Cancer has a prime role to play in that by thinking about and communicating about emotion.  By bringing emotions out into the open in this way, Mercury helps to establish that it is safe to express what we feel, that we are with others who can hear about and understand what we are feeling and are willing to be similarly vulnerable with us.  This establishes a connection between kindred spirits and helps to create a joyful, loving community.  Enough review?  Good.  😉

Now is a time for us to work toward finding or creating that kind of community for ourselves, if we don’t have it already, and for connecting gratefully with those who embody that community for us if we do have it.  It is also a time for us to be loving and gentle toward ourselves, especially when we have a hard time reaching out to people or talking about what we feel.  This is a card of a loving, feeling consciousness, and for a lot of us there can be some inhibition about embracing that.  If that is something that we have a hard time with, now is the time to think about that, not with recriminations toward ourselves or our loved ones, but rather in a spirit of developing our potential to grow past that, and learn to communicate with our loved ones in ways that nurture and uplift all concerned.  Keep in mind that healthy, loving communication about our feelings doesn’t come naturally to everyone; often it is a skill that needs persistent attention and will to develop.  Today is a good day to start that process.  🙂

Astrology of December 25th, 2016: A Bounty of Love

Most of the day is spent under a void-of-course Moon in Scorpio, but whether you’re celebrating Christmas or eating Chinese food and watching movies or starting your Hanukkah celebrations, chances are that you don’t have to do anything requiring a more active and outward focus, so this is a good day for it.  Plus, Venus livens up the day with some social congeniality by cozying up to Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn at 20 degrees of their respective signs over the course of the morning.  Three supportive aspects with the personal planet of love, affection, and wealth sounds like a pretty good day to me!

The day did start out first thing in the wee hours with an inconjunct from the Moon in Scorpio to Uranus in Aries, but this is one of the few inconjunct types with a greater capacity to break through the inherent incomprehension between the two bodies in this placement due to the joint rulership of Aries and Scorpio by Mars.  For those who were awake at that time, there may have been a bit of agitation resulting, but since this was a Lunar aspect it is doubtful that any of that energy remains now.

What dominates the astrological news of the day is the trio of Venus aspects that happened over the course of this morning, which set a wonderful tone for the entire day and potentially carry over some good feelings into tomorrow as well, since these aspects are all between planets, and that means that they have more staying power than aspects formed by the more quickly-moving Moon.  First there was the trine between Venus in Aquarius and Jupiter in Libra, the Lesser Benefic and Greater Benefic of the Zodiac connecting in the most harmonious and supportive of aspects.  Love, affection, pleasure, wealth – all of these are in Venus’ domain, while Jupiter encourages wealth as well along with luck, generosity, and faith.  This is a major feel-good aspect that few others can compete with!  A sextile from Venus in Aquarius to Uranus in Aries followed, with the potential for the pleasurable feeling of the day to be accompanied by many “a-ha!” moments and a strong interest in trying new things, broadening our minds and experiences.  And finally, Venus sextiled Saturn in Sagittarius, the old Cosmic Taskmaster, who is apparently feeling more congenial this weekend after his trine with Uranus yesterday, and therefore gives some staying power to the fun and festivities today, and reinforces the ties that bind between family and friends in an unusually loving and enjoyable way.

The combination of all three of these aspects creates a wonderful balance between individual and group needs and interactions, and gives us an opportunity to mend and strengthen our connections with each other with a strong sense of fun and belief in each other, as well as genuine affection.

The one downside to the astrological love-fest is that Trans-Neptunian body Chiron is also at 20 degrees today in Pisces, and while it thankfully never forms an exact square with Saturn during this time (wait for spring for that!), it is still in a close enough orb to potentially dredge up some pain surrounding our relationships with father figures, especially those we have felt separated from, thanks to the simultaneous inconjunct formed by Chiron and Jupiter (also not exact, but still in close orb).  However, with Jupiter in such a strong supportive aspect with Venus, and Saturn being supported as well via the less powerful but still harmonious sextile with Venus, the parental figures of the Zodiac are emphasized today in an incredibly loving and accepting way, and that now gives us a beautiful opportunity for healing.  We now have the potential for any confrontation with our pain surrounding parental authority to be in the service of healing ourselves and our wounded relationships, deepening our affection for each other as a result of the limitations in our histories, even and sometimes especially the most difficult ones.

This is a day to enjoy and to strengthen our hearts with!  Bright Blessings to all of us and our loved ones, whether two-legged or four-legged.  🙂
