Astrology Update, March 8th, 2017: Time to Shine

Today is a day of few astrological aspects, but that doesn’t mean it’s quiet.  We are still feeling the effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Pluto sextile giving transformative power to our thoughts, and that same power is about to connect with our consciousness in a big way with tomorrow’s Sun/Pluto sextile, which we are already starting to feel the effects of.

Meanwhile, the Moon in Cancer started off the morning by squaring Mars in Aries, stirring up emotions and frustrations, and potentially increasing the likelihood of conflict.  Cancerian emotions and instincts tend to be sensitive and protective, so butting heads with the aggressive drive of Mars in Aries amplifies Cancerian moodiness and increases the likelihood of the Crab breaking out the claws in self-defense.  Since Mars in Aries isn’t likely to back down from a fight, this morning may have seen more than a few quarrels and hurt feelings, especially in relation to those of us pursuing our own interests without considering the impact of our actions on the more sensitive people in our circles.  On the plus side, since this square started a short void-of-course period, these quarrels are less likely to have a long-term impact, even if this influence did start the day off on the wrong foot.

Toward mid-morning the Moon entered Leo, making our emotions and instincts bolder and more eager to take center stage.  Leo governs the 5th house of self-expression, the house of art, creativity, children, games, lovers, and other pleasurable pursuits.  Leo is ruled by the Sun, so this lion is perhaps a little gentler and more sympathetic than usual, but still, this is not a time to be timid!  We are more likely to be given to grand expression of emotion now, being more open and generous with who we are and how we feel.  We are also more likely to want to be noticed, and more likely to get cranky if we feel we are not getting our lordly due.  The king of the jungle is not interested in playing second fiddle to anyone but is still perfectly capable of sharing the throne with an acknowledged equal for a mate or delegating the actual business of rulership to a competent power-behind-the-throne type, so long as the king still gets the spotlight.  So it is with our egoic emotions and instincts now – under this Moon we want plenty of attention and ego-stroking, but are more than happy to share the bounty, and with multiple favorable aspects over the next 24 hours that bounty is likely to be warm and benevolent like the Sun.  This is the perfect time to step into greater feelings of self-esteem and healthy pride, a chance to shine at what we are best at, sharing our creativity and accomplishments with others and taking pleasure in the things that make life most worthwhile.

The only astrological aspect this afternoon is that of the Moon in Leo trining Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, heightening our intuitive knowing and capacity to learn on an unconscious level, basking in the warmth and optimism generating by the harmonious alignment of these two signs.  Since Black Moon Lilith brings our unconscious closer to consciousness (she occupies space between the Moon and the Sun), and the Moon is in a Sun-ruled sign now, we have a wonderful opportunity to make use of a combination of conscious and unconscious energies now, surrendering ourselves to vital and pleasurable experience in creative and expressive realms that reveal our truest ideals and beliefs.  Under this alignment we are even equipped to understand and make use of our shadow sides in service to our creativity and further our growth even while being perhaps a tad self-indulgent.  😉

Astrology Update, March 6th, 2017: A Unifying Vision

The day started in the very wee hours with the Moon in Gemini sextiling Mars in Aries signaling the beginning of a void-of-course period lasting a few hours.  Since those of us in the Western Hemisphere who don’t work night shift were most likely asleep at this time, the most we were likely to get out of this supportive aspect were interesting dreams, the kind that are exploratory and tickle our curiosity in a Gemini fashion, or perhaps more driven and active in keeping with Mars’ placement in Aries.  Those of us who were awake at that time may have gotten a decent boost to our productivity so long as we stuck to our routines, though we could just as well have been insomniac writers or stayed up too late embroiled in Internet conversation (yep, that last was me).

A few hours later the Moon entered Cancer, the sign that it rules, heightening our emotional sensitivity, moodiness, and protectiveness, and putting our instincts firmly in the realm of caring for those we consider our own – friends, family, loved ones, even close business associates (despite being known as a sign of domesticity, Cancer can have remarkably good business acumen).  While the Moon is in Cancer it is a great time to strengthen our connections, tend to home repairs and spring cleaning, cooking and domestic projects, or the kinds of business interactions that require sensitivity and intuition.  Those of us in sales and service occupations could do well during this time, so long as we are operating out of a sense of genuine concern for helping our clients.  Since Cancer is a watery sign, our moods are especially prone to fluctuation now, and we want a mutually beneficial exchange in our interactions – we are more likely to fuss over those we care about and be attentive to their needs, but want the same kind of attention in return, and if that is not forthcoming we are likely to feel more hurt than usual by the discrepancy.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Cancer sextiled the North Node in Virgo, emphasizing the healing quality of both signs and giving us some extra impetus toward self-care, as well as helping us to understand how caring for others fits into our karmic path.  We may have experienced new insights regarding our health, home, family, or business, or gotten some extra support along the way from someone close to us, priming us to make good use of the boost in consciousness coming this afternoon.

The big astrological news of the day is the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury in Pisces.  Mercury is in a challenging place in Pisces, opposite Virgo, one of the two signs that it rules, and subject to Piscean tendency to blur boundaries that can hamper analytical thought.  Since Mercury rules two mutable signs and is known for speed, the changeability of Pisces is something that Mercury can work with, and Mercury in Pisces can have an uncanny ability to quickly pick up on the thoughts and intentions of others, thanks to the combination of speed and dissolution of boundaries, but those qualities can also lead to confusion, since it can be difficult for Mercury in Pisces to be certain what thoughts and intentions are truly one’s own.  Under a Piscean Mercury’s influence we can find our compassion and sympathy heightened and blending with the desires of others that we have mistaken for our own, and it can be very easy to get caught up in others’ needs, especially under an empathetic Cancerian Moon.  The Sun conjuncting Mercury now heightens the Piscean influence, but also lends brilliance and awareness to Mercury, making it easier for us to utilize the best of Mercury’s capabilities at this time.  We can communicate with greater kindness and sensitivity, intuitively grasp information and gain a full sense of the big picture that may have previously eluded us.  We are more likely to gain insights that can help others around us and help ourselves to take great steps forward in our own spiritual and psychological development.  We may gain a clearer understanding of our own patterns of self-sabotage and martyrdom, with a greater chance of releasing what we no longer need or want, in preparation for new beginnings this spring.  This is a great time for creative endeavors, as well as breakthroughs in medicine and compassionate service in healing professions.  Now is a time of heightened awareness of our interconnectedness as a species and as an entire planet.  And because Mercury conjuncting the Sun can lead us to identify with our ideas, this is a time to be aware that while we may not literally be our ideas, our ideas now can reshape who we are for years to come.  Pisces represents the end of the zodiac, and the end of a cycle, a time to make our peace with who we are and what we have done, and cast off outmoded ideas that have held us back for too long.  Now is the time to bring our most compassionate natures and ideas into the light, like seeds sending new shoots breaking through the dark earth and unfurling into the coming spring.

Astrology Update, March 5th, 2017: Possibility and Reality

We are still feeling the effects of Venus stationing retrograde yesterday and will start to feel the effects of tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction as the day progresses.  Though Mercury in Pisces is not known for mental acuity and can be easily confused on the level of strictly analytical thought, still it is highly intuitive and capable of reading people well enough to pluck others’ thoughts seemingly out of mid-air, and tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction may make us highly conscious of our intuitive capabilities in both thought and communication.  Since Mercury is the ruler of Gemini, the sign that the Moon is transiting throughout today, our emotional and instinctive reactions may take some of this intuitive flavor, though the emphasis will still be on the classically Gemini qualities of curiosity, mental flexibility, communication, and speed.

In true Gemini fashion the Moon started the day off quickly enough with a sextile to Venus in Aries shortly after the witching hour and then a square to Mercury less than an hour later.  That Moon/Venus sextile was likely to inspire some emotional impulsiveness, especially in terms of our interactions with others, and may have inspired more than a few of us to stay up later than usual as a result of Gemini curiosity fueling the Aries desire for action.  However, the square with Mercury may have reinforced the more difficult qualities of Mercury in Pisces – the brain fog and confusion resulting from Piscean blurring of boundaries within our thoughts and communication, made all the more potent by the residual effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Neptune conjunction.  It’s just as well that this was happening during the wee hours of the morning for those of us in the continental United States.  For those of us working night shift, this could well have made for problems with concentration and communication and even fine motor skills.

Closer to dawn, the Moon in Gemini squared the Sun in Pisces, creating a challenge from our unconscious to our conscious selves.  The First Quarter Moon is a time of crisis in the build-up of energies connected to the intentions that we set at the New Moon/Eclipse, energies that will continue to build up to their release point at the Full Moon.  This First Quarter Moon sees our emotions and instincts in the mental sign of Gemini and our core consciousness in the emotional and intuitive sign of Pisces, which may have us feeling as though things are flipped on their heads and may result in us questioning what is real.  On the plus side, Gemini is great at synthesizing information and Pisces is great at integrating opposites and working within paradoxes, so these two signs are well-equipped to process conflicting data, but we still may find ourselves swimming in a bit of information overload during this time, information that requires a unified effort on both the conscious and unconscious levels to make use of.

The big astrological news of the day is this afternoon’s trine from Mars in Aries to Saturn in Sagittarius, creating a powerfully supportive connective between our drive and our discipline.  Mars in Aries is already potent, being in one of the signs that he rules, but adding Saturn’s patience and steadying influence now helps us to keep from raging forward impatiently and instead applies our focus with Saturnine direction, recognizing the perils and pitfalls that we must avoid, especially on the ideological front, and using our challenges and restrictions as a necessary part of the refining process to make the actions that we take now more likely to yield the results that we desire.  This afternoon is a time to make use of our energy and ambition, knowing that we have a greater capacity to do so with wisdom and integrity, aligning the needs of the self (Aries) with the needs of the bigger picture (Sagittarius).  Physical activity is favored now, as well as tackling the tough jobs we previously were reluctant to face.  Mars in connection with Saturn gives us the courage to face our fears, while Saturn keeps that courage from turning into foolhardiness.  This is a great time to break through procrastination, as we have the confidence now to work through our insecurities, calmly and steadily but also with just the right touch of excitement.  This is the intersection of possibility and reality, so it’s time to take advantage of it and use it to take those bold and necessary steps into the future that we’ve held back on for far too long.

To add to this boost in our personal power is a trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra a little later in the afternoon, increasing our inventiveness and curiosity as well as our instinctive responsiveness to others.  This helps us to take those Mars/Saturn-driven actions in ways that don’t run counter to our purposes in social realms, instead facilitating our communication skills and our optimism in supportive and exciting ways.  We may find ourselves flying high on a sense of hope and fun during this time, but since we are being constructively grounded by that Mars/Saturn trine, we can enjoy our mood this afternoon while still making good progress on the things that matter to us and not floating too far into the ether.  The trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra particularly enhances our good fortune in groups, especially when utilizing our communicative and technological skills and keeping a sense of lightheartedness.

The mood of inventiveness and stimulation continues this afternoon and into early evening with the Moon in Gemini sextiling Uranus in Aries, and since the Moon is making contact with both Jupiter and Uranus in short order it does activate the recent Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in orb to have lingering effects on our lives in connection with our individual identities and our relationships.  The Moon sextiling Uranus now adds to the unpredictability and inventiveness of this afternoon’s mix, encouraging us to think outside of the box and utilizing new strategies and technologies to achieve our aims.  Uranus is a revolutionary, so our instinct now is to break free from constricting patterns and cast an eye toward the future while being mindful of what we truly want for ourselves, not just what society tries to convince us we want.

As the evening progresses, our moods may take a more somber turn as the Moon in Gemini squares Chiron in Pisces, dredging up old hurtful patterns in both our own lives and the lives of those close to us.  We may find our earlier chattiness has inadvertently stepped on some toes, or our attempts to break new ground for ourselves have conjured up ghosts from our pasts that must be laid to rest before we can make real progress, and since our instincts are still set to Gemini’s fun-loving and somewhat flippant mode, we may experience some confusion as to what is actually going on and why the fun seems to have turned sour.

The moodiness brought on by this aspect is only exacerbated late tonight by the Moon in Gemini opposing Saturn in Sagittarius, turning our moods somber and even depressive.  All of the action of the day is still only a drop in the bucket of what needs to be done to get our world back on course, and that sobering sense of reality is Saturn’s stock-in-trade, deflating the Gemini giddiness that had us whirling through much of the day.  Our pace becomes slower now, whether or not we want it to.  Gemini tends to be an insomniac and Saturn tends to remind us of our limitations, so I expect that more than a few of us will encounter sleeping challenges tonight, whether of the variety that keeps us up tossing and turning or the type that knocks us out much earlier than anticipated, with still so much left in need of doing.  Since we will still be feeling some residual effects of the Mars/Saturn trine into tomorrow, however, navigating tonight’s Moon/Saturn opposition is really a matter of awareness of what is necessary to keep our engines running, and the recognition that tomorrow is another day, with new possibilities to build into realities.

Astrology Update, March 4th, 2017: Hearts and Minds at Sea

This morning’s early hours saw a trio of significant astrological events starting the day on a potentially jarring note, with Venus stationing retrograde in Aries, followed first by the Moon entering Gemini and then by Mercury conjuncting Neptune.  Keep in mind that we are still feeling residual effects of Thursday’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, which may heighten discord and agitation in relationships and in connection with authority figures, and may also lead to sudden financial changes.

Retrogrades occur as a result of the differences in orbits between the Earth and other planets in our solar system, making it appear that those planets are traveling backward in relation to the Earth.  Of course, they are not actually traveling backward, but still there seems to be a corresponding effect in terms of how we relate to the archetypes and themes of those planets.  Currently, Jupiter is retrograde, so now is a time of reassessing our relationships with luck, wealth, faith, and authority, particularly in connection with interpersonal relationships and social systems, especially with regard to what creates and keeps social harmony in our lives.  Since Jupiter is currently opposite Uranus, the Jovian themes that we are re-considering during this retrograde are being challenged and informed by our own desire for freedom, our rebellious tendencies, our insights, and our visions of the future.

Stationing planets appear to slow down and halt their normal motion in preparation to turn retrograde or direct.  Venus stationing today heightens our focus on Venus’ themes of relating to others, what we take pleasure in, and what we value, and while the exact point at which she turns retrograde happened in the early hours of this morning, we are likely to feel the effects of this station strongly throughout the day.  Venus rules Taurus, the sign the Moon has been in for the past two days, as well as Libra, the sign in which Jupiter is currently retrograde, so Venus themes have already had a strong measure of emphasis recently.  In fiery Aries, Venus expresses herself actively and independently, even impulsively.  Relationships begun under an Aries Venus are more likely to be expressed in this manner.  Now, however, Venus’ retrograde asks us to reconsider how we express our affections, how we connect with others, how we share our beauty (both inner and outer) with the world, and what we value.  This is a time when we may reconsider our relationships, or may return to older fashion styles, or may give ourselves a makeover, whether literal or figurative.  We may find ourselves feeling insecure about our looks, or our possessions, and we may be more likely to experience buyers’ remorse and return recent purchases.  This is a time that encourages spring cleaning, though we would do well to measure our pace in such activities and not throw out the baby with the bathwater, as Venus is still in impulsive Aries during the first half of this retrograde (she returns to sensitive Pisces in the second half, before stationing direct on April 15th).  There is some disagreement among astrologers as to whether Venus should be considered as an indicator for wealth.  Since she rules Taurus and therefore rules the 2nd house, I think it would be wise not to discredit the effect Venus may have on our financial well-being, since Taurus is the sign most associated with material possessions.  That said, I think that Venus’ role in relation to wealth is very much about what we take pleasure in and how we define our values, and therefore she is most likely to affect the extent to which we are or are not able to indulge ourselves at this time.  I think it very prudent to keep an eye on our purchases during any time in which Venus’ normal operation is challenged, like today, and expect that during this retrograde we may see some limitation of Venus’ benevolent expression on the material plane as well as in the more abstract interpersonal arenas.  On the plus side, if we are contemplating any big steps in her realm, such as marriage or a high-ticket purchase like a house, now is a good time to carefully reconsider and address any potential problems with these moves, so that come April 15th we can move forward with confidence.  For those of us who are single, Venus retrograde may well be a lonely time but it is also a good opportunity to reassess how we are approaching others, how we put ourselves out to the world, how we express affection, and how we meet our own needs in relationships, and to make any necessary adjustments that can help us move forward more successfully in these areas come April 15th.

As mentioned before, the Venus station was followed by the Moon entering Gemini in the early morning hours, taking our emotions out of the Venusian realm of earthy Taurus and leading us into a more mental and communicative place.  Gemini is known as the Sign of Man, a sign of duality that leads us to explore opposites, and also a sign of curiosity and inventiveness.  A mutable sign, Gemini is flexible and mobile, and likes to keep things light, to experience many things within a short period of time, which can lead to a reputation for frivolity as there tends not to be much time to explore depths on a Gemini’s busy schedule.  That said, being ruled by Mercury Gemini is sharp-minded and quick, able to gather a lot of information in a short time, so it is wise not to dismiss Gemini as being all about fluff and no substance.  Gemini loves technology and especially tech that facilitates communication, so the Internet may become extra lively during this Moon.  Under a Gemini Moon we are likely to be emotionally responsive, more interested in communicating ideas about what we feel than actually experiencing those feelings, but also more willing to discuss emotions in the first place, which may be particularly helpful while kicking off the Venus retrograde.  Still, a Gemini Moon has us preferring to keep things light-hearted and fun, and encourages us to respond to serious matters with a certain degree of wit and even flippancy.  Thus, we might get the ball rolling on relationship-related conversations now, but we’re not likely to solve any major problems on the subject at this time.  Short journeys are favored during this time, as are quick transactions and the kind of cursory study that helps us determine what to research in more depth once the Moon is in a sign with more perseverance.

Following the Moon entering Gemini and still within the early morning hours, Gemini’s ruler Mercury conjuncted Neptune in Pisces this morning, potentially fogging things up a bit in mental realms for the rest of the day and thus getting the Moon’s time in Gemini off to a rough start.  Neptune governs imagination and our spiritual inclinations, but also blurs boundaries and thus can heighten confusion and even deception.  Where Neptune appears in our natal charts is where we tend to give ourselves the short end of the stick, typically because Neptune heightens our sense of compassion, but also because Neptune can limit the expression of our egos, and while it may be fashionable in some spiritual circles to denigrate the ego, a healthy ego is still a necessity for navigating reality on the material plane.  We may find our thoughts struggling to make sense of practical matters now, more prone to daydream and escapist fantasies.  Now is not a time for any activity requiring sharp mental acuity, and it is unwise to sign contracts during this time or enter into verbal agreements.  There is a strong potential to be deceived during this time, in large part because our own wishful thinking and heightened sympathies can make us easily led astray.  Those of us whose Sun, Moon, or rising signs are ruled by Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) and those of us for whom Mercury is prominently placed in our natal or progressed charts should be especially careful today.  Mental illness is also more likely to manifest symptoms during this time, as Neptune governs illness and as the transcendental ruler of Pisces and the 12th house also governs hospitalization.  On the plus side, this conjunction can also amplify creativity, especially in Mercurial areas such as writing, so today is a good day for writers of fiction or poetry, especially those exploring spiritual or oceanic themes.

Toward mid-morning the Moon in Gemini opposed Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, which could well heighten feelings of overwhelm resulting from the Mercury/Neptune conjunction.  Black Moon Lilith tends to immerse us in the darker places of whatever sign she is traversing and whatever luminary or planet she aspects, so we may find our emotions experiencing more of the disconnect between the airy realm of Gemini and the watery realm of Pisces where Gemini’s ruler is currently in the grip of the transformative power of Neptune, and Black Moon Lilith’s transit through Sagittarius just throws that disconnect into sharp relief via Sagittarius’ notoriously forthright and righteously hot temperament.  We may have found ourselves extra testy this morning as a result, and although thankfully lunar aspects are short-lived, still the deeply unconscious nature of both the Moon and Black Moon Lilith could have found the reverberations of this contact lasting well into the day, especially since Black Moon Lilith is about wisdom gained through trying experiences.

As the morning progresses, that orientation toward lessons is doubly-emphasized by the Moon in Gemini squaring the Nodal axis, challenging our progression from remaining stuck in the familiar to learning new skills and growing along our karmic path.  We may find ourselves feeling emotionally trapped at this time, or at least resistant, especially since the North Node in Virgo and the Moon in Gemini are both experiencing the Neptune-induced brain fog of their ruler Mercury, and Virgo’s concern with details is not likely to sit well with the Gemini Moon’s instinctual pursuit of a broad base of information to the detriment of more detailed examination.  With the Mercury/Neptune conjunction fogging up the works, the North Node is especially hard-pressed to be able to attend to the details of our growth now, but it’s not going down without a fight (karma rarely does!) and so we are likely to be painfully aware that we are not living up to the requirements of our karmic path at this time, even if that awareness is just a nagging feeling in our subconscious that won’t allow us to get completely comfortable in our activities today.

Our emotional and instinctual discomfort comes to a head late tonight as the Moon in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces, reinforcing the mind-clouding effects of the Mercury/Neptune conjunction and urging us further toward escapist reactions to our feelings and the events of the day.  Tonight there is a very real danger of falling into addictive behaviors, retreating into alcohol or drugs, or just plain avoiding anything that smacks of reality.  While Moon/Neptune aspects can sometimes enhance our creativity, this is a challenging aspect that may make it harder than usual to tap into the helpful elements of both of these bodies, especially given the Mercury/Neptune conjunction and the other astrological challenges of the day.  Those of us who already experience health challenges, especially those of us with chronic illnesses and ailments that defy diagnosis, are likely to have a rougher time than usual under this influence.  Tonight is a time to be gentle and compassionate with ourselves and others, and channel as much of our escapist instinct into more benign expressions of fantasy, such as books, movies, music, and art.  Thankfully this is a lunar aspect and therefore relatively short-lived in comparison with some of the other influences of the past few days, and tomorrow we will be getting a boost of active and disciplined energy from Mars in Aries trining Saturn in Sagittarius, so we should not be too hard on ourselves about what we don’t get done today.  Turning in early to take advantage of Neptune’s heightened capacity for dreaming may be just what the doctor ordered, and today’s confusion may still yield valuable wisdom to make good use of tomorrow.

Astrology Update, February 27th, 2017: Reforging Identity

The astrological activity started in the early morning hours today with the Moon in Pisces sextiling Pluto in Capricorn, giving a boost of power to our emotions from the larger forces in our lives.  Our instincts may turn toward the practical, strengthening our reactions in relation to our goals, careers, and reputations, so for the early risers among us heading to work before sunrise this is a bonus that may give a great start to the day, setting the mood for accomplishment while maintaining our sensitive and intuitive feelings that help us to be aware of the larger picture and how the attainment of our goals affects those around us.

As the morning progresses the awareness of individual desires versus social harmony is sharpened due to the big astrological aspect of the day, Mars in Aries opposing Jupiter in Libra.  Our energy and drive is purely self-motivated today, bold and aggressive and wanting action, yet bumping up against a magnified concern with maintaining peace and order and amicable relationships.  Today we are likely to see situations arise where we are forced to acknowledge the areas in which these forces conflict, and in the process become more aware of the challenges in balancing these two, learning how to integrate these opposing forces as a result.  What are our own beliefs about peace and harmony in relation to others, and where do these conflict with getting things done in our own lives?  Where do society and our relationships demand compromise that our individual focus is no longer willing to tolerate?  Where does conflict arise as a result of trying to please too many people at once?  When are we no longer willing to act as doormats just to keep the peace?  And how do we bring our actions as individuals into the public sphere in a way that harmonizes with others without sacrificing our identities and needs as individuals?  Because Mars tends to stir things up and highlight conflicts, and Jupiter expands whatever he touches, we may see increased conflict today, tempers flaring.  We may find ourselves struggling with rage, especially for those of us who have kept our aggressive feelings buried, and now it is likely to spill out into social arenas and interpersonal relationships.  We may also experience troubles in relation to authority since Jupiter is the ruling figure of the zodiac.  Legal battles may turn heated and require extra diplomacy to navigate successfully – it is unwise to be the aggressor at this time, yet neither should we cave, as this aspect requires a balance of focused action and willingness to mediate and compromise.  Our religious beliefs may also be challenged at this time, or we may find ourselves challenged by religious orthodoxy, as Jupiter governs institutions of faith.  Of course, for those who are already more secure in balancing individual desires within the societal framework, today may provide a powerful boost of energy that feeds accomplishment in dealing with the-powers-that-be.  Jupiter is optimistic and benevolent after all, and if we can keep our aggression firmly harnessed in service of focus on our goals, we may find that this aspect gives us the extra impetus we need to achieve our aim, especially when what we are aiming for serves the common good.

Toward mid-day we may find that the issues raised by the Mars/Jupiter opposition require that we fall back on our more well-established skills and thought patterns.  Though yesterday’s eclipse emphasized making a break with the past, still we may find ourselves thinking and communicating with nostalgia during this time, or with people from our past, though still mindful of the future as Mercury in Pisces conjuncts the South Node and opposes the North Node.  Regardless, how we think about our karmic path and our purpose in life is highlighted now, especially in relation to how that path and purpose are shaped by our past and by our family history, as well as by societal patterns.  Thanks to this Nodal activation, some of the conflicts coming up today in relation to the Mars/Jupiter opposition are likely to be related to our history and karmic baggage, both on the interpersonal and societal levels.  How have past injustices shaped who we are and what we face today?  How do we address our history and move forward in unity while still honoring the needs of individuals and minorities among us?  Our minds will be in a prime position to address these questions during this time, and compassionate communications regarding history and social connections are favored at this time.

This kind of thought and communication is further emphasized by the Moon in Pisces conjuncting Chiron in Pisces within minutes of the Mercury/South Node conjunction, bringing past trauma to the foreground of our emotions and reactions.  We become more attuned to the toxic patterns in our lives as a result, more sensitive and aware of both the damage and the need and means for healing.  Therapeutic efforts that emphasize communication are likely to get a boost from this aspect, as well as any active efforts to redress old wrongs.  Since the conjunction is a hard aspect, those of us with health concerns may find ourselves struggling with flare-ups at this time, but we are also likely to have a greater instinctive awareness of what needs to be done to remedy such ills, especially when that awareness can be shared with and benefit others like us with similar problems.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially casting a more somber mood.  Saturn in Sagittarius already limits the optimism of this Jupiter-ruled sign, and with Jupiter embattled by Mars today, our optimism and faith are likely to feel hard-pressed to muster against a challenge from the Piscean Moon coming off of its own challenge from Chiron.  It’s important to be mindful of the potential for burnout at this time in connection with the Mars/Jupiter opposition, as the one-two punch of the Moon in hard aspect to first Chiron and then Saturn may bring us face-to-face with our own limitations on an emotional and instinctive level, and we may find ourselves needing to call it a day much earlier than we might otherwise like.  Depression is a distinct likelihood at this time, and we may feel victimized or have to come to grips with our sense of martyrdom.  Since embattled Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, our emotions aren’t likely to be getting much help from that end, and our optimism may find itself at an all-time low.  Escapism into alcohol or drugs is a real risk at this time, so it’s important to make time for self-care and remember that this too shall pass.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with the Moon/Saturn square, this evening we would do well to fall back on routine and use the unfocused and dreamy quality of this time to tend to small, mundane tasks, or quiet conversation with friends and loved ones at home, or more introspective activities.  Some downtime is likely needed after this day.

That said, the night does not end quietly, as the Moon enters Aries late tonight, turning our emotions active, aggressive, and self-focused.  This is a more ego-driven placement for the Moon, and we are likely to take a “me first” attitude as a result.  Of course, this is not entirely a bad thing, as the push-pull between social and individual concerns during the past couple of months may require that we do some restructuring and rebuilding of our identities as a result.  Aries isn’t just about selfishness – having a strong sense of self is absolutely necessary to be able to navigate this physical plane, and we don’t tend to be much good at helping others around us if we forget to take care of ourselves.  Aries is very much about action and heroism, leaping in to save the day when all seems lost, and defeating monsters both within and without.  The Aries archetype is the warrior, and the warrior’s first battle is always with the self, shaping and honing the identity in preparation to meet the world.  And after this day, chances are that we need a strong sense of self to be able to continue and not collapse into the pain and sadness that so many challenging aspects may have raised.  Aries has an inherent sense of wonder, being the youngest sign of the zodiac, and like a child and hero both, wants to set out into the world to explore and adventure.

The final aspect of the night is a trine between the Moon in Aries and Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, emphasizing these Aries lessons in the most beneficial way, submerging our unconscious in an optimistic will to expand our understanding and experience of the world and boldly face whatever chimera await.  Black Moon Lilith is simultaneously focused and surrendering, the Yin counterpart to Mars’ Yang.  The Moon in Aries is eager for adventure and self-testing, and will rush in where angels fear to tread, unafraid of whatever darkness Lilith can dredge up in the realm of our philosophies and beliefs, and the two of them allied together gird us to do battle in the service of our highest ideals, reforged on an emotional and instinctive level to face tomorrow.

All aspect times used in creating this post are calculated for Pacific Standard Time.  I tend to speak in broad terms when I reference time on this blog, referring to time-frames like “morning” or “afternoon” rather than specific times, since I still have a lot of friends on the East Coast who read these posts and I’d like them to be pertinent to those friends as well as folks here on the West Coast.  Readers from further abroad will need to adjust time-frames accordingly.

Please keep in mind that we all have different responses to the aspects of the day because we all have different natal and progressed charts with which these aspects interact.  If you would like to know more about your own natal and progressed charts in order to better understand how the aspects of the day will affect you, please take a look at my astrological services, and let’s get started on helping you to understand your life better!
