Astrology Update, February 26th, 2017: New Moon and Eclipse in Pisces

This morning starts with the New Moon in Pisces and an annular Solar Eclipse, the “ring of fire” in which the moon blocks much but not all of the Sun, due to being further away from the Earth and therefore appearing smaller in relation to the Sun.  This will not be visible in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is potent nonetheless.  The New Moon is a time for intention setting, preparing the energy that will grow between now and the Full Moon, at which time we release that intention out into the world.  Eclipses, on the other hand, set something new into motion over a six month stretch, with the effects from this one stretching forward until the next Solar Eclipse in August.

The Moon and the Sun are conjunct in Pisces, which also contains Mercury, Neptune, Chiron, and the South Node, putting a heavy emphasis on Piscean themes of emotional sensitivity, spirituality, fantasy, and karma.  Pisces is the oldest sign of the zodiac, so endings are emphasized here and new beginnings as well, thanks to three planets and a dwarf planet in Aries (Venus, Mars, Uranus, and Eris).  Now is the time for us to muster both faith and courage to let go of the past in order to leap forward into the new, which may not be what we were expecting.  Since the Moon and Sun are conjunct between the North Node and Neptune, coming to terms with the past is especially emphasized, but the Moon and Sun are closer to Neptune, so there is a strong potential for confusion here.  Neptune is the transcendental ruler of Pisces and emphasizes dissolving boundaries and merging with the Universal, so the process of dissolution is stronger than the grip of the past, but if we fear letting go then that process will be more difficult.  We may find ourselves caught in the grip of nostalgia, even if that vision of the past is seen through overly rosy glasses.  One way to help ourselves move forward is actually to learn more about the past, the real past, not the idealized one nor the one hidden by those for whom the truth would be inconvenient.  Now is a time for dreaming as well, and meditation on the patterns in our lives, especially those pertaining to trauma, whether personal, familial, or generational (or all of the above).

As if to emphasize the need to dissolve old ties and let go, later this morning Mercury squares Black Moon Lilith, challenging our already fuzzy mental capacities with full immersion into our most difficult and destructive belief patterns, adding further fuel to the Eclipse-born impetus to discover the truth about our karmic patterns.  Black Moon Lilith here may add to our unconscious fears, but also gives us a push to break through them in order to gain a fuller understanding of ourselves and how we have been shaped by larger patterns and attitudes that may not even be truly our own, imparted to us by family and society.

This afternoon, we have still further opportunity to transcend our old patterns and float in the sea of intuitive knowing as the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces.  We are likely to have a powerful instinctual need to escape reality at this time, and may find ourselves bewildered by what we are feeling now.  Those of us who are spiritually inclined may feel like we have been touched by the Divine, or fate, but some of us may also find our addictions or chronic illnesses hitting hard now.  Our moods may tend toward the romantic, or the introspective, or the nostalgic, or some combination thereof, and while this can amplify confusion and escapism, it can also aid in the process of dissolving old ties and making our peace with the past.  This is a good time to work through these feelings creatively with art or music, or any other activities that thrive when fed by an active imagination.

Early this evening Mars in Aries conjuncts Uranus in Aries, activating the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition as well as a loose cardinal T-square with Pluto.  That Mars/Uranus conjunction is going to emphasize a drive toward the future and new beginnings that may be of the hang-onto-your-hat variety, as Uranus is impatient even when not in impulsive Aries and is also still conjunct Eris, goddess of chaos and discord.  And with Jupiter blowing air into the coals, his emphasis on relationships and social harmony just fuels the Uranian fire that demands freedom, self-fulfillment, and revolutionary change that Mars provides the drive to achieve.  All of the watery emphasis on the past that we experienced with the Eclipse and the Moon/Neptune conjunction now gives way to four-alarm fire steering us in a wholly new direction that we may well feel we have absolutely no control over.  But for many of us, no matter how disconcerting that push from forces larger than ourselves may feel, on some level it is likely to be a relief, a natural progression, a vital shift in consciousness that needs to happen.  Scary, yes.  But oh-so-necessary.

Astrology Update, February 24th, 2017: Action!

We are still feeling the residual effects of last night’s Mercury/Saturn sextile, fortifying our minds and our communication, aiding our planning and organizing skills, our ability to do repetitive tasks, and our data-crunching capabilities.  This is a good time to get tasks done that might not normally be exciting but which are necessary steps in furthering our own improvement as well as our social goals and ideals.  We’re also already starting to feel the effects of next week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, the second in a series that started in late December and will culminate at the end of September, reinforcing yesterday’s Jupiter/Eris opposition and challenging us to find the balance between innovative individual freedom and harmony in relationships as well as faith in social order, particularly when our Eris-fueled bullshit detectors are dialed to 10.

Today’s astrological aspects are blessedly harmonious and minimal, giving us some respite from the activity of the past couple days.  This morning sees a sextile from the Moon in Aquarius to Venus in Aries, giving some Venusian warmth to our feelings and increasing our friendliness while at the same time allowing us to remain self-motivated and even a bit detached.  This is a great balance to encourage taking action without getting bogged down in emotion and simultaneously giving some sense of social responsibility to the will to dance to our own music.  Of course, given that the transcendental ruler of Aquarius, Uranus is hanging out in Aries along with Venus, Mars, and Eris, that sense of responsibility is still likely to be revolutionary.  Our instincts this morning lead us in search of new ways of doing things, and are going to be excited by new ideas and technologies, but thanks to Venus in this mix we are likely to want to be hands-on with that excitement rather than just living in the world of ideas.  Since Venus governs the female sexual principle, this aspect can also be a good reminder of just how sexy forthrightness and a bit of impulsiveness can be, and that’s a pleasurable glow to light up the morning and linger into the astrological quiet of the afternoon.

This active impulse is reinforced late tonight when the Moon in Aquarius sextiles Mars in Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a boost from our drive, ambition, aggression, focus, and energy.  Mars governs the male sexual principle, and following on the heels of our emotions aligned with Venusian affections we may find ourselves pursuing those affections more aggressively tonight.  Aries is one of the two signs that Mars rules, so he’s in the height of his power here, bolstering our courage and uninterested in excuses about not getting what we want.  Mars in Aries rejects excuses and moves forward boldly and quickly to make it so already, damnit.  Those of us who have been languishing in uncertainty may find this aspect coming after the boost in confidence from this morning’s Moon/Venus sextile cutting through all of that crap, and about time, too.

Astrological Update, February 22nd, 2017: Chins Up!

It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

The big astrological aspect of the day also started things off very early out of the gate, with Mars in Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning.  This is a rough start to the day, and the tone this challenge sets will linger into tomorrow as well.  Mars is all about drive, focus, energy, aggression, and the masculine sexual principle, and he’s in one of the two signs that he rules so he’s in his place of power.  But power is what Pluto is all about, power and control, will, transformation, loss, endings, and death.  Pluto also governs institutions, such as governments, police, hospitals, and organized crime.  And with Pluto in Capricorn, his themes are playing out in relation to our careers, reputation, and standing within the social order, whereas Mars’ themes are playing out in relation to our identity and sense of self.  You can see where this is going.  This is a power struggle between our desire for self-determination and the giant institutional forces that seem beyond our control.  The cold and impersonal will of a transcendental planet that moves slowly and influences the course of generations and countries versus the individual drive of a personal planet known for its rage and destruction (Mars is the god of war, after all).  On the personal level we are likely to experience frustration, interpersonal conflicts, and explosive temperaments.  We may feel thwarted at every turn by impersonal forces disrupting our plans.  We are at increased risk for accidents, especially because Mars in Aries is impatient and hasty, so it pays to be extra mindful today.  On the societal level, there is an increased potential for violence, police and military conflicts, posturing by would-be strongmen, and breakdowns in diplomacy.  How this plays out through the day is likely to be influenced by the various aspects made by the Moon over the course of the day, as this day is profoundly cardinal in its energy, with the majority of aspects involving planets in the cardinal signs of Aries, Libra, and Capricorn.

The first lunar aspect of today is that of the Moon in Capricorn conjuncting Pluto in Capricorn, happening around mid-day/early afternoon and aligning our emotions and instincts with the great impersonal forces of our lives.  Since Pluto is like all transcendental planets in that he transforms whatever he touches from the ground up, the Moon is no match for Pluto’s power, and our feelings are intensified as a result.  We are likely to be deeply, instinctively aware that we are not in control, and may feel helpless in the face of socio-economic and political factors impacting our lives.  Our best-laid plans are up against the powers-that-be, and today their impact can feel gut-wrenchingly personal.

Since the Moon squares Mars within less than an hour of this conjunction, our emotional response is likely to turn angry very quickly, and we may find ourselves driven to action, our knee-jerk reactions rebelling against all that seems to confine us or otherwise meddle in our lives.  There can be very real conflicts with authorities as a result, so it is important to be as conscious as possible of these dynamics as we go through our day today, and wherever possible avoid going off half-cocked, and Pluto’s influence makes the consequences potentially life-changing.

This evening, our emotions become even more unsteady and unruly as the Moon squares Uranus in Aries, bringing our most rebellious impulses into the fray, stirring things up with sudden changes and potential technological breakdowns, and fomenting revolutionary disorder and even outright chaos.  On a more personal level, it would be wise to be cautious with electronics, and backup important data.  It is especially important to take precautions with travel this evening, due to the increased potential for accidents and violent crime due to this aspect amplifying the aggressive and disruptive qualities of the Mars/Pluto square with Uranian impulsiveness and the Moon’s unconsciousness.  This is an atmosphere tailor-made for crimes of passion.

A short while later the Moon in Capricorn squares Jupiter in Libra, reinforcing the ongoing opposition between Jupiter and Uranus, so we’re not likely to get much help from diplomatic quarters.  Our emotions and instincts that have been so riled up by first Pluto, then Mars, then Uranus are not likely to play nicely with Jupiter in Libra’s magnified desire for peace.  While a Capricorn Moon can be calm, traditional, and devoted, it can also be prone to fanaticism – it was the Moon sign of Hitler, after all (yes, I did just Godwin this analysis).  Jupiter’s influence is typically benevolent, but it is also magnifying, and after the day we’ve had there is a strong potential for that influence to become the final straw and blow things all out of proportion.  Or make us inclined to hide under our beds with frayed nerves and an overwhelming wish for it to all go away.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with this aspect, we may find ourselves worn-out and adrift at this point, unable to process much else.  Certainly our emotions have been through the wringer by this point, despite the Capricorn Moon’s innate tendency to keep a stiff upper lip through all the sturm und drang.  In fact, that may be the real danger in all of this – an instinctive urge toward stoicism that gets frayed about the edges but doesn’t adequately process what’s going on emotionally.  That being the case, there is one silver lining in all of this:  The final aspect of the day is a gentle, harmonious sextile between the Moon and Chiron, giving us the emotional capability to navigate our hurts tonight and gain wisdom from the process, as well as potentially helping those around us as we lick our wounds.  This is not a day I’d wish on anyone, but we may still gain some necessary growth from it all, and through it all find some human connection and mutual compassion by the end of the day.

Astrology of February 19th, 2017: Playing to Win

This morning the Moon in Sagittarius trines Venus in Aries, joining our emotions and our affections together in a fiery alliance that favors the bold.  We want adventure today, and we are not likely to be shy about seeking it.  Our pleasures and desires are active, courageous, and perhaps a bit self-centered, but likely to be generous nonetheless.  We feel idealistic and want whatever we do now to fit into the bigger picture – we are not likely to be content with lukewarm motivations or half-measures.  We may find ourselves a bit impatient and impulsive at this time, and given the right circumstances could give our hearts away on a whim.  We are likely to be warm and enthusiastic regardless, albeit perhaps somewhat restless and even demanding, and we are very emotionally responsive to those around us now.

Toward mid-day, however, we may find a fog arising around those bold emotions, with confusion a likely result, thanks to the Moon in Sagittarius squaring Neptune in Pisces.  Our hearts that were so sure and strong this morning may now lead us astray, and we may need to be wary of deception now.  Or, the grand intentions of the morning may well fizzle now, and leave us wanting to escape reality for a bit.  Those of us with addictive personalities are likely to be undermined by temptation now, as our courage flounders and we find that what we thought was clearly defined is suddenly hazy, our righteous path fraught with uncertainty.  Piscean sensitivity can make this experience especially jarring after the previously confident start to the day.  Jupiter is the classical ruler of both Sagittarius and Pisces, but Neptune is the transcendental ruler of Pisces and in the sign that it rules, so this really boils down to a clash between these two outer planets, who govern larger forces than the personal feelings ruled by the Moon.  With Jupiter involved that tends to make things feel larger-than-life, while Neptune heightens our spiritual awareness and sense of interconnectedness, which is not automatically a bad thing, but when Neptune clashes with the Moon in Sagittarius especially we are likely to find that our beliefs and emotional patterns are being challenged in the process, making us feel like the rug has been pulled out from underneath us, and we may find our usual coping mechanisms not up to the struggle between what we feel and the bigger situations in our lives.

Still, tonight we may find ourselves regaining our sense of capability to deal with whatever is on our plates, as the Moon in Sagittarius trines Mars in Aries, and our feelings return to this morning’s emboldened state, but now have the energy and drive to back them up.  Mars is the ruler of Aries, so he is naturally at home here and in the height of his power, and is not likely to take “no” for an answer.  We are likely to be very forthright about what we want now, even blunt or tactless, which means that now is not the time for interactions requiring diplomacy.  With the Moon trine Mars in this position, we are playing to win.  Just what the prize may be is anybody’s guess, but we will revel in the thrill of the chase now.  If we seek to win others over to whatever cause has our attention at this time, we are likely to be extraordinarily persuasive.  Whatever our heart is set on, we will put our all into attaining it.  However, given the impulsiveness that is likely to accompany this aspect, we would do well to be certain that whatever we set our hearts on is worth the effort.

Astrology of February 16th, 2017: Into the Deep

The day starts with an early morning sextile between the Moon in Scorpio and the North Node in Virgo, putting our emotions and instincts in a supportive alignment with our karmic purpose.  The North Node shows us the skills that we need to cultivate in this life, and this aspect helps our instincts to guide us toward what we need to follow this path, giving us focus that allows us to become aware of and attend to all of the necessary details and deeper connections that we might not otherwise notice.

The big astrological news of the day is the sextile between Mercury in Aquarius and Mars in Aries that happens toward mid-day.  Because this is a planetary influence, we are likely to feel the effects of this aspect throughout today and into tomorrow, making this a great time to harness our communicative powers to take action on the causes that matter most to us, both personal and social.  We are likely to be more driven to communicate, and our words have more force behind them now, but because this is a harmonious alignment people are also more likely to accept what we have to say, and those of us driven to lead will be more likely to make our case effectively for what we think needs to happen in service of our goals.  That said, if others are not on board with our plans, we’re not going to be too interested in working with them, especially if we think we can accomplish more on our own.  We are independently motivated right now, and will only go along with the group if we think it suits our own purposes.  That said, with Mercury in socially-minded Aquarius, chances are that we will find group purposes helpful to our own today.

Tonight, however, our instincts are likely to lead us into more solitary directions, or more intimate ones.  The deep emotions of the Scorpio Moon will find themselves getting a romantic and spiritual boost from Neptune in Pisces via a flowing trine that offers the best of Neptune’s spiritual vision and Piscean sensitivity in tonight’s instinctual pursuit of intense feeling and understanding of the mysteries in our lives.  While Neptune can sometimes lead us in the direction of escapism and fantasy, tonight’s trine gives us a greater potential for finding spiritual truth through exploring, expanding, and in some cases dissolving our boundaries, and our emotional connections are strengthened by blending the Scorpionic desire to get to the bottom of a mystery with Piscean intuition and psychic capability.  We may find ourselves resolving old and previously buried issues as a result, and whether waking or sleeping our dreams tonight are likely to be revelatory.
