Astrology of January 26th, 2017: Emotional Persistence

The Moon has a busy day ahead of it today, starting in the wee hours of this morning with a conjunction to intensity-increasing Pluto in Capricorn.  Those of us who are night owls (or very early morning risers) are likely to have felt a push to our instincts and emotions during this time, especially in favor of practical action in pursuit of our goals, with a resultant uptick in productivity.

Morning to mid-day sees a string of Lunar aspects, starting with the Moon in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries, which may trigger sudden mood swings, as our emotions are challenged by the ruler of change and upheaval.  We may also experience technological issues, as Uranus governs technology and electricity, and the Moon governs cycles and fluctuations in addition to our emotions and instincts.  Since the Moon operates on an unconscious level, we may find ourselves triggering changes that we did not consciously intend but that we may need (or feel we deserve) nonetheless.  Now is definitely a time to be mindful of the ways in which we may sabotage ourselves in relation to our goals, particularly with regard to distractions, Internet and social media, and burnout, all three of which may be heightened under this aspect.  This is especially true since this aspect is followed by the Moon sextiling Chiron in Pisces, which gently supports us in understanding the areas of our life in which we feel eternally injured and not up to the tasks in front of us.  Chiron in this harmonious aspect with the Moon encourages us to gain and share wisdom surrounding these hurt or stuck places in our lives.

This is followed by the Moon in Capricorn squaring Jupiter in Libra, which is likely to magnify whatever we are feeling.  Since the Moon in Capricorn is not normally comfortable with emotional displays, we may struggle with our feelings as a result, particularly since Libra wants everything to be socially harmonious and Capricorn can have a tendency to say or do things bluntly that can put Libra all a-flutter with anxiety over the resulting potential social discord.  This is a time to perfect the balancing act between following what our instincts tell us to do in pursuit of our goals and mastering the diplomacy that we are likely to need along the way.  Since Jupiter governs luck, we may find our timing is a bit off at this time, so that even if we are normally socially graceful we might find ourselves stumbling a bit more along the way now.  Thankfully, this won’t last long.

This aspect is shortly followed by the Moon sextiling Venus in Pisces, helping those of us who are mindful of potential stumbles to gracefully right ourselves and smooth over any ruffled feelings, should we choose to do so.  We are also more likely to take pleasure in our work at this time if it is truly in alignment with our goals and our values, and may feel more camaraderie with our co-workers as a result.  This influence continues through the afternoon without any further aspects until evening.

Later tonight the Moon in Capricorn sextiles Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, which may generate some intensity in our feelings and responses, but is still a harmonious influence and can add some wisdom and power to our practical pursuits if we are willing to consider some of the mysteries in our lives more deeply.  This is a time of potential insight that we may gain further understanding from sleeping on.  Since this aspect is followed by a sextile from the Moon to Mars in Pisces near the witching hour, the unconscious is already being directed by our energy to make good use of our dreams, and our intuitive capabilities are likely to be enhanced at this time.  Plus, this starts a brief void-of-course period before the Moon enters Aquarius in the wee hours of tomorrow, which also encourages us to fill in missing pieces in our understanding intuitively, so this is an excellent time for editing, correcting, and ferreting out the gaps in our plans as well as any problems in our systems and surroundings in need of remedy.

Tarot for January 24th, 2017: The Empress, reversed

Today’s Tarot card is (III) The Empress, reversed.  Given the political shenanigans of the week thus far, that probably comes as no surprise, but it’s still worth exploring further.

The Empress represents the core of the divine feminine, all of the abundance and raw, creative power of Mother Earth.  She is not the first female figure in the Major Arcana – that would be (II) The Priestess – but she is more fully female than The Priestess, who combines both masculine and feminine principles and like (I) The Magician, can be seen as more of a sacred Androgyne as a result.  The Empress fully owns her female power.  In the Thoth deck, she is shown with one arm in a receptive position and the other hand holding the (apparently phallic) stem of the lotus, the emblem of love held over her heart; all other symbols on the card are oriented toward “feminine” qualities of love, creativity/procreation, intuition, protection (via the shield), and self-sacrifice (via the image of the pelican nourishing her brood with her own blood).

This is the card of the Supreme Mother, she who generates all of the resources that (IV) The Emperor will put to use via his ordering capacity.  Keep in mind that he cannot use any of those resources unless she permits it; all sovereignty proceeds from The Empress, and she can just as easily take it away again.  This is an ancient principle, that of the king who is married to the land, and cannot rule without her approval.  It is a principle that would-be rulers of this age would do well to remember.  For what happens to those who take the Earth’s resources by force, depleting her creative capacity?  Starvation, disease, pollution, natural disasters, rising tides and droughts resulting from climate change…  A ravaged land yields no kingdom worth ruling.

The Empress reversed is definitely pertinent in today’s astrological environment via tonight’s combined alignments of the two personal planets related to gender, Mars and Venus.  Mars and Venus are both currently in Pisces, emphasizing connection through universal experiences of our masculine and feminine energies.  Mars tonight trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, the rejected feminine of Lilith in the nocturnal sign of Mars’ rulership, encouraging our active, masculine drive to dive deep down into the waters of repressed wisdom, to uncover all of our most intense and difficult beliefs about gender roles and interactions, and integrate the wisdom we find.  Venus tonight conjuncts Chiron in Pisces, the trans-Neptunian object that brings us face-to-face with our deepest pain, the wound that we cannot heal for ourselves but can help heal in others through the insights gained from our own suffering.  These two aspects come late tonight, just eleven minutes apart, and this combination suggests the potential for deep connection around gender and sexuality at this time, and a re-examination of our relationship to the feminine at a time when the feminine is under serious attack.  We cannot effectively fight against misogyny when we do not acknowledge how deeply internalized it is in ourselves.  No matter what our gender identities or sexuality, we cannot be complete beings without experiencing the full spectrum of masculine and feminine energies and acknowledging the damage that has been done and continues to be done to both men and women in the name of subordinating female power.

We also need to recognize the myths surrounding motherhood that are used against us, the ideals of sacrifice and loss of identity in service of baby-making for the sake of feeding the corporate machine rather than truly nurturing family and community.  In an over-populated world, forcing people to bear children they cannot support either emotionally or financially is an abusive power-dynamic that has nothing to do with “family values” and everything to do with control.  Expecting mothers to give up everything for their children without community support just adds insult and further injury to the heap of systemic abuse.

The Empress is a card of Venus, who governs what we love, what we take pleasure in, and what we value.  Seen upended here, our true values are being subverted by false equivalencies through our collective virgin-whore complex, our punitive attitude toward sex and treating children as punishment for pleasure rather than valued beings in their own right, and our commodification of women and sexuality in service to the very system that seeks to destroy female power and mold women into frantic consumers eternally in search of the next product to make us appear (artificially) beautiful and acceptable, confining our image of “good” women to a very tiny cage and condemning any woman who wishes to live outside of it.  This tangled nest of chains imprisons men as well, fostering unhealthy relationships both internal and external, forcing men to conform to toxic ideals of masculinity for fear of being lumped in with the undesirable feminine and similarly disempowered.

After this past weekend’s powerful expression of feminine unity through Women’s Marches around the world, we should not be surprised at the backlash, both now and in the months to come.  Recognizing where our own relationship with the divine feminine has been injured and needs healing is the first step toward resisting that backlash and reclaiming our own power as complete beings, regardless of gender.

Astrology of January 24th, 2017: A Sense of Determination

As soon as the day began in the wee hours the Moon in Sagittarius sextiled Jupiter in Libra, starting the morning with fleeting idealistic feeling that has faith in both ourselves and other people, especially those with whom we form close partnerships.  Hopefully some of that feeling permeated our dreams, because we may have needed that boost as the morning progressed through a bit of rocky territory.

A couple of hours later the Moon conjuncted Saturn in Sagittarius, turning our feelings a bit more somber.  We became instinctually aware of our limitations, and our fears and insecurities may have taken hold, especially in the wake of challenges to our ideals in the early morning hours.  Those of us already inclined toward depression were likely to have gotten hit with an extra dose of it, and may well have wished to stay in bed for a few hours longer rather than face the day with such a grim outlook.  Thankfully, like all Lunar aspects, this one was fleeting, despite Saturn’s tendency toward longevity, and hopefully we are all out of its grip by now.

Later in the morning (right while I am writing this), the Moon in Sagittarius squares Mars in Pisces, potentially amplifying our drive but also increasing our frustrations, as our emotions and instincts are in a fiery sign being challenged by our energy and aggression in a watery sign.  The Moon turns void-of-course at this time, which may dull some of the sharp edges of this influence, but can also create confusion with what to do with these energies.  Now is a good time to focus on routine tasks, despite any feelings of our energies being at-odds with our instincts.  We may find ourselves wanting to do more than we have the energy for at this time, so it’s important to be patient with ourselves now, and use the insights of this time to organize and correct what we can until this afternoon, when the Moon enters Capricorn, bringing more strength of purpose to our feelings and instincts, especially where our goals and reputation are concerned.

The Moon in Capricorn is driven, dedicated, and can even be prone to a touch of fanaticism in pursuit of its goals, so now is definitely a good time to start getting things done, especially in favor of our careers and long-term goals.  We’ll be far more inclined toward practical pursuits now, far less inclined toward day-dreaming (unless of course that daydreaming is really planning!), and because of the discipline of this sign this is a great time to work on adjusting and reinforcing desired habits and systems, both those in need of revision and those we are just starting.  We are more likely to desire recognition for our efforts, while understanding that we need to earn that recognition, so this is a good time to take note of what we want most in terms of career and reputation, create a plan to achieve it, and start taking the necessary steps to fulfill our goals.

The Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo later this evening, creating ease and flow between what we feel and our karmic purpose, feeding into our sense of determination and helping us toward our goals, assuming that they are truly ours and not just what we are doing because it is expected of us.  For those of us whose career and social position are not in alignment with our soul’s needs, now is a time when the Universe may give us a gentle nudge in the right direction, so pay attention to what stirs your heart and soul tonight, and what possibilities and opportunities present themselves, as making good use of opportunity is Capricorn’s stock-in-trade.

This is followed by Mars in Pisces trine Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio late in the evening, followed immediately by Venus in Pisces conjuncting Chiron in Pisces.  This combination creates a state of flow between our masculine side and the wisdom to be gained through intensity and delving into mystery, while simultaneously our feminine side is being transformed from the ground up by our pain and old, ingrained injuries coming to the surface.  This may result in some messy and difficult experiences and realizations, but the Capricorn Moon is good for helping us to see the silver lining in these and make good use of what we learn, though it may find the emotional depth of these placements in watery signs to be at odds with more practical desires.  Still, we should be willing to apply some of that Capricornian devotion to our inner landscapes tonight, and blend practicality with compassion for ourselves and others navigating the darkness at this time.  There is a great potential for spiritual progress to be made and rich rewards in strengthening our intuitive and emotional connections if we are willing to face our hurts now and start to apply our hard-won wisdom.

Astrology of January 21st, 2017: Navigating Intensity

The series of supportive aspects that began yesterday continues today.  That doesn’t mean that it’s smooth sailing all day, since the ongoing Mars/Saturn and Chiron/Saturn squares are still in effect, creating a backdrop of rebellion versus authority and pain stirred up by that authority and our limitations as well.  And with the Moon continuing in Scorpio all day, our emotions and instincts are intense, focused, driven, and not likely to give up.  So, having a string of supportive Lunar aspects right now is better than a bunch of challenging ones, but supporting our emotions and instincts now doesn’t stop their intensity, only makes them potentially easier to navigate.

The first aspect of the day was a sextile from the Moon in Scorpio to Pluto in Capricorn in the wee early morning hours.  Since Pluto is the transcendental ruler of Scorpio, even though this is a harmonious alignment it is still likely to have intensified the Scorpionic expression of our emotions and instincts and heightened the potential expression of control issues.  Keep in mind that the Moon governs the unconscious – not simply the subconscious, which is personal, but the unconscious, which connects us collectively through our dreams and ancestral memories.  We would definitely do well to be mindful of whatever we can remember of our dreams this morning.

The Moon/Pluto sextile is followed by the Moon in Scorpio trining Venus in Pisces a few hours later.  Venus in Pisces heightens the connectivity and sensitivity between us via our affections, pleasures, and our values.  This adds to the potential for the collective unconscious to be operating powerfully this morning, and while Venus in Pisces can have a gentling effect it can also make us inclined to believe the best of people or situations even when they do not have our best interests in mind.  We can find ourselves with our sympathy for others being turned against us, so it pays to keep our eyes open and our wits about us this morning.

Later this morning, the Moon trines Chiron in Pisces, which puts our emotions in-touch with our deepest wounds.  The trine creates flow and ease between our emotions and hurts, which is great for helping us to understand our pain intuitively, but that doesn’t mean that we will act rationally in response to what we feel.  The Moon in Scorpio leads us to instinctively ferret out hidden things, including some things that might best remain hidden if we are in situations where releasing that pain is more disruptive than helpful.  This is definitely a time to take a deep breath and take time out for self-care if needed.

This evening, the Moon trines Mars in Pisces, aligning our energy and drive with our emotions and instincts.  With Mars as the classical ruler of Scorpio, the intensity of our emotions is again likely to be heightened, even if Mars in Pisces is one of the gentlest of Mars placements.  We should be extra mindful of hidden undercurrents in our emotions and those of others, and the actions that they lead to.

This Mars/Moon trine starts a void-of-course period in which it is important to wrap up unfinished business and fall back on routine rather than taking actions in support of new agendas or requiring careful decision-making.  Given the intensity of the day’s emotions against the backdrop of tense long-term aspects, this evening is a time to spend tending to the feelings we’ve stirred up, mending our hurts, and spending time with a few friends and loved ones in the comfort of familiar haunts, so that we can process the emotional lessons of the day.  With Black Moon Lilith conjuncting the Moon toward the end of the night, there is a lot of intensity to process, but there is wisdom to be found here as well.  Chances are that we are going to need it.

Astrology of January 19th, 2017: Authority and Rebellion

The day started out pleasantly enough with the Moon in Libra sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius in the very wee hours, following on the heels of last night’s Moon/Jupiter conjunction with the magnitude of last night’s emotions getting a steadying influence from Saturn, and the Moon in Libra’s harmonizing influence gentling our insecurities.  Which was deeply needed with Mars in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius just 20 minutes later…  These are the two trouble-making planets of classical astrology, the Lesser and Greater Malefic, and having them square off in the most challenging aspect pits aggression against fear; needless to say, this does not bode well for the day, and since planetary alignments change more slowly than Lunar and Solar alignments, we’ve been slowly building up to this for the past couple of days and will be feeling the reverberations for another couple more.  I will not deny that this gives me concern for the numerous Inauguration Day protests planned throughout the United States.  Given the stakes for the country if Putin’s coup and Trump’s resultant inauguration go unopposed, I’m not going to advocate for people not to protest, only for people to be careful and not allow themselves to be unduly provoked, as this alignment is likely to exacerbate an already volatile political climate.

That said, this alignment occurs within a Lunar void-of-course period set off by the Moon’s sextile to Saturn so soon before, with the resultant possibility that cooler heads will prevail (at least until this afternoon), as the void-of-course Moon helps us to see what to hold onto and what to let go of, and I am hoping that extends to tempers.  😉  Void-of-course Moon is also a time of heightened intuition, which I suspect is especially needed now, though it is also a time when we should stick to routine, and any bold new ventures or meetings now are likely to come to naught.  This period lasts until this afternoon, when the Moon enters Scorpio less than an hour after the Sun enters Aquarius, and shortly after that the Moon and Sun square each other.  Given the stubborn nature of both of these fixed signs, having our conscious and unconscious selves pitted against each other now is likely to generate additional frustrations.

The Sun in Aquarius makes us especially conscious of the individual’s place within society, and the ways in which the evolution of the individual shapes the evolution of society.  That’s all well and good, but this afternoon that consciousness is pitted against intense and secretive Scorpionic emotions and instincts, and with Scorpio’s classical ruler Mars squaring off against Saturn from the watery realm of Pisces, we are likely to experience those emotions seething under the surface at length, until they are set off by just the wrong social trigger.  There is some comfort perhaps in the mutual classical rulership of both Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, currently in the socially-conscious sign of Libra, but Saturn’s classical rulership of Aquarius makes it likely that the Sun in this placement will simply reinforce the chafing-against-authority feeling of the Mars/Saturn square, with authority sparking rebellion and rebellion inviting further clamping down by authority, continuing in ever-intensifying circles.

However, the Last Quarter Moon that begins today is a time for releasing and letting go.  Whatever we confront during this Mars/Saturn square, we need to exercise enough discernment to see what is worth keeping and what no longer serves us, and limit destruction only to what merits it.  The Mars/Saturn square is positioned against the backdrop of the ongoing Triangle of Potential between individualist Uranus in Aries, socially-minded Jupiter in Libra, and disciplined Saturn in Sagittarius encouraging us to restructure our world mindfully with a greater balance between self and society, even as the United States moves toward its Pluto return, when Pluto transits the same degree that it did when this nation was born.  Pluto, transcendental ruler of Scorpio where the Moon resides today, plays the long game with its multi-century orbit, and governs control, death, and transformation, sometimes all in the same intense package at once.  Little wonder then that these two squares and the larger configuration and current cycles all overlap and reinforce each other now.  Challenges like these are the catalysts to change and growth.  What we do with that impetus is up to us.
