Astrology Update, 3rd Quarter Moon, January 8th, 2018: Lantern Light

There is a kind of paradox in the January 8th, 2018 3rd Quarter Moon in Libra, appropriate to the eternal balancing act of the sign.  When Uranus in Aries stationed direct the day after the 1st of January’s two Full Moons, it ushered in an unusual time when all of the planets are currently direct, free from the hesitation and hiccups of the retrograde influence.  In combination with Saturn’s recent entry into Capricorn, one of the two signs that it rules, it would seem as though the universe is aligned in favor of movement and getting things done.  The 3rd Quarter Moon, however, is a time when we have been busy disseminating whatever intentions we planted at the New Moon and saw come into fruition at the Full Moon, and our energy is now beginning to peter out.  Ironically, despite the forward motion and impetus to action of all of the planets, the 3rd Quarter Moon is a time for review, reassessment, and refinement of what actions we have taken toward our goals, similar to the need for such review during retrograde periods.  The combination of the will to action and the need for review make this an especially good time to take actions related to shedding things we no longer need, breaking bad habits, and removing unwanted influences, so that whatever intentions we plant at the upcoming New Moon will be able to grow unimpeded.

January 6th saw Mars conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio, amplifying our need for action in some of the deepest and most intense areas of our lives, and this conjunction is still in orb to have a powerful effect on this 3rd Quarter Moon.  Scorpio is emotional deep water, swirling around our drive, our ambition, our aggression, that is now touched with the fervor of faith.  Neptune in Pisces is still trined to Jupiter, lending imagination to this brew, course-correcting our trajectories through our dreams, and bringing a sense of selflessness to our actions – we are more willing to act on behalf of others now and in service to the greater good, and more likely to want whatever we do to be meaningful on a deeper and more universal scale.  But this 3rd Quarter Moon also sees Mars sextile to Pluto, and Jupiter moving toward his exact sextile with Pluto in the darkness shortly before the New Moon.  Our will to action is powerful under the Plutonian influence, and as a result this is an especially good time to take action to correct power imbalances in our own lives and in our larger society.

Given that the 3rd Quarter Moon is a square aspect between the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Libra, there is a challenge here between our need for accomplishment and our instinctive desire not to upset the peace, our will to go-it-alone up the mountainside and that desire for companionship that got so stirred up at the Full Moon.  Social Libra is the sign most desirous of harmony that is also most likely to find that harmony all-too-easily disrupted, so the tendency of the 1st and 3rd Quarter Moons to unsettle us with their emphasis on change finds our instincts especially sensitive to such disruptions now.  We have this powerhouse of capability with Jupiter, Mars, Pluto, and Neptune in supportive aspects with each other, and a weary and uncertain Moon making us instinctually unwilling to rock the boat, even when the universe suggests that it is in serious need of rocking.  And thanks to the trine from Mercury to Uranus and the square from Mercury to Chiron, both on the 6th and both still in effect, our minds at least are primed to do some of that rocking, able to learn from Chironian discomfort and gain insight from the rapid changes that Uranus triggers, even if those changes are the last thing the sensitive Libran Moon feels equipped to handle.

Libra’s ruler Venus conjuncts the Sun today, and at the time of the 3rd Quarter Moon she is close enough to be considered cazimi, “in the heart of the Sun.”  In the few degrees leading up to this rarefied state, Venus has been considered combust, “under the rays of the Sun,” her loving and companionable qualities hidden, face and form burnt, uncertain of her own power, and hesitant to receive affection.  That said, Venus is strong in Capricorn, well-equipped to endure the Sun’s fire in pursuit of her more radiant self.  For once she reaches the cazimi degrees, all of her impurities and uncertainties are burnt away, and she shines with the brilliance imparted by the awareness of the Sun.  Both the Sun and Venus sextiled Jupiter a few hours before the 3rd Quarter Moon, bringing a sense of faith and optimism to this new awareness of our more evolved capacity for love and connection.  Now is the time to recognize who we have become in pursuit of the affection that became such an emotional challenge during the Full Moon’s opposition to Venus.  And because the Sun and Venus both conjunct Pluto and Mars the day after this 3rd Quarter Moon, now is the time to recognize the power and urgency of our connections as well, with all of their practical and emotional impact boosted to the hilt at a time when our instincts turn toward peace and quiet.  With the Moon squaring Sun, Venus, and Pluto at this time, we are challenged to accept affection, to believe that we are worthy to have love exert its power in our lives.  In the cold of winter, heading into the dark of the Moon, Venus in the heart of the Sun becomes our sustaining light, drawing our reluctant hearts forward to press on through the night.

Astrology of January 10th, 2017: Mixed Movement

sparklers-1

Today’s astrological alignments are a lively mix, to be sure, starting off in the wee hours of the morning with the Moon in Gemini square Chiron in Pisces, forcing our instincts and emotions to confront an area of injury in our lives and the often painful lessons resulting from that.  We may have had disruptive dreams as a result, and these are very worth noting.

This was followed shortly by the Moon in Gemini trining Jupiter in Libra, magnifying whatever we were feeling.  With the Moon in Gemini, those feelings were likely to be animated and curious and the influence of Jupiter in Libra may have thrown relationship concerns into the mix, but the trine aspect promoted ease and flow between these areas, creating a potential for positive interactions with others during the early morning hours.

That said, the Moon in Gemini opposed Saturn in Sagittarius less than an hour afterward, and that may have thrown a damper on things, as the Moon in hard aspect to Saturn tends to amplify our depressive tendencies, due to heightened awareness of our limitations and insecurities, and in these signs that awareness was especially likely to impact our communication and capacity for learning and growth.  At the very least, it’s likely to have gotten the morning off to a rough start.

Late morning saw the Sun in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries, one of two major aspects for the day, which colours the entire day.  Be aware of the potential for sudden, jarring changes, including accidents, as Uranus in Aries in hard aspect to the Sun tends to make us all over-hasty.  This is a disruptive influence to be sure, but since Uranus governs futurist thinking, it suggests that it pays both to be conscious of the present moment and to think one step ahead, or at the very least to look where we are going!

This afternoon the Moon in Gemini opposes Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, currently in Sagittarius.  This gets our recent sojourn out of Mercury retrograde off to a shaky start, and is likely to make our thoughts and communication a bit agitated and rough around the edges.  Chances are that we will want to say exactly what is on our minds about something that has us worked up, but will find the timing off, or ourselves tripping over our tongues, or both.  Since the Moon enters a brief void-of-course period at this time, chances are that whatever we do or say at this time won’t amount to much, which may be just as well, given the high potential for mental and verbal errors resulting from this alignment.

The Moon enters Cancer less than an hour later, the sign which it rules, and this puts our emotions and instincts in search of home, family and friends, and security.  Cancer does have a high degree of business sense, which may help to smooth over blunders caused by our wagging tongues earlier in the afternoon, as Cancer is sensitive and good at soothing ruffled feelings.  Of course, Cancer is also good at becoming moody due to its own ruffled feelings, so we’re not entirely out of the woods just yet!  Nonetheless, chances are that we’re going to want to find somewhere comforting to hole up around sunset and soothe any hurts resulting from this jumbled day, preferably in the company of our nearest and dearest.

Finally, this evening sees the second of the two major aspects of today, a harmonious sextile between Mars in Pisces and Pluto in Capricorn.  While the combination of these two bad boys of the zodiac can sometimes be painful and disruptive, or at the very least intense, Mars in Pisces is already the gentlest possible expression of our energies and the sextile is the gentlest of the major aspects, so instead of being disruptive the alignment between Mars and Pluto tonight has the potential to help us a little further through the transformations that Pluto is currently confronting us with, in the least stressful way possible.  Mars’ energy combined with Pluto’s power in these two yin, receptive signs helps to balance out the agitation brought on by the Sun’s square to Uranus earlier, though it will not be without its own share of intensity.  Still, it is likely to be steadying, helping us to balance opposing energies in our lives and transform what results from that balance into what we need to attain our goals.  And that’s a decent way to bring this eventful day to a close.

Astrology of January 8th, 2017: Quick Wits

In the wee hours of this morning, Mercury stationed direct, ending the past few weeks of retrograde motion and moving our thoughts and communication forward again.  Expect all Mercury themes to be emphasized today, including travel, writing, contracts, technology, and games.

Since I am currently in-transit across country to New England, this post will be necessarily brief, and my posts for the next week may be shorter than usual, but I did want to get this out to you to keep you apprised of the astrological weather.  🙂

Mercury themes are still likely to experience some wonkiness for the next few weeks until Mercury reaches the degree at which it turned retrograde, and during the station today it still pays to be extra attentive to details regarding the Mercury-ruled areas listed above.

To add to the Mercury emphasis, the Moon enters Gemini this afternoon, one of the two signs that Mercury rules.  Gemini in particular emphasizes quickness of thought, so anything Mercury related that needs extra attention today is likely to involve decision-making that turns on a dime, yet with Mercury stationing today our thoughts may not be as quick as our instincts.  Now is the time to use the Moon in Gemini’s curiosity and inventiveness to find solutions to any Mercury-related decisions, and it likely pays to be communicative and social in the process.  The Gemini Moon is responsive but detached, and these qualities may serve us well while Gemini’s ruler is still making its station.

Tonight the Moon squares the Nodal axis, so those Gemini instincts and emotions may find themselves challenging our karmic path.   Mental flexibility is key here. and chances are that if we exercise Gemini’s innate curiosity and desire to learn, this challenge will help to move us forward and help us grow into our purpose.

Astrology of January 6th, 2017: Radical Regeneration

artifice-face-detail-dark

For most of the day the skies are relatively benign, with the alignment action of the day waiting until around mid-day to get started, and then favoring us with a helpful trine from the Moon in Aries to Mercury in Sagittarius.  Our emotions and instincts are bold and curious under this influence, with our thoughts and communication full of optimism and faith in our own abilities as well as in our fellows.  Of course, this starts a void-of-course period when it would be best not to follow up on some of the more adventurous impulses engendered by this combination, but thankfully that doesn’t last for long.

Less than two hours later the Moon enters Taurus, a sign of stability, practicality, and material comfort.  Taurus is the fixed earth sign, known for both patience and perseverance, so any flightiness induced by yesterday’s jumble of impulsive aspects will quickly disappear under this influence.  Our instincts are likely to turn to securing our creature comforts, and most purchases that we make at this time are likely to be good investments.  Since Taurus is ruled by Venus, our appreciation of beauty and the arts is heightened at this time as well.

That Venusian influence is doubled-up tonight when the Moon in Taurus sextiles Venus in Pisces, creating a gentle, even languid feeling that is likely to make us more comfortable at home on familiar ground than out and about, unless of course the places we go out to are our familiar haunts – Taurus is a creature of habit, and we will want to be among familiar faces and enjoying ourselves.  This influence augurs well for creative endeavors, as well as romantic ones, and makes a great time for unwinding and luxuriating in something (or someone!) delicious.

Of course, the big monkey-wrench in all of this stable, comfortable feeling is tonight’s conjunction of the Sun to Pluto in Capricorn a few hours later, bringing the light of consciousness to our both our destructive and regenerative powers.  Hidden parts of our psyches now come forth, for better or for worse, and we are not interested in superficial interactions.  We are drawn to intense situations, and if they are not forthcoming we are likely to create them ourselves.  Given the Moon’s position in Taurus and that lovely Moon/Venus sextile earlier, we aren’t likely to have sought out truly dangerous places this evening, which is just as well, as the Sun/Pluto conjunction heightens the likelihood of criminal situations in particular turning out poorly.  Also, because Pluto deals with death and transformation, we may be called upon to repair something that has broken down, whether an actual mechanical object or a system, situation, or relationship.  Whatever it is, radical change is called for in this repair, or that which is in need of mending may not continue.

Astrology of January 4th, 2017: Regaining Courage

 psychic-eye-right

Mercury has been traveling back through the first half of Capricorn during this retrograde period and this morning enters Sagittarius again for the final leg of its reflective journey, moving our thoughts this week away from our goals and back into the ideology that sent us in pursuit of them.  Now is the time for us to meditate on why we have chosen the path that we are on, and consider if those beliefs are truly our own, and truly in alignment with who we want to be.

Our emotions will challenge our thoughts in this regard shortly after Mercury’s entry into Sagittarius’ volatile realm, as the Moon in Pisces squares Mercury.  Our emotions and instincts are still in the Piscean mode of compassion and unity, and aren’t too keen on the “us-versus-them” mentality of a Sagittarian landscape currently dominated by a restrictive Saturnine outlook.  Plus, it’s never comfortable when the mind clashes with the heart, and we could wind up tripping over our tongues this morning as a result.  Thankfully, the void-of-course period that follows is very short (6 minutes!), and the Moon entering Aries gives us a bit more confidence.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer from any residual foot-in-mouth disease, but Aries is so eagerly in constant pursuit of the new that any verbal stumbles are likely to be quickly forgotten.  Aries is good for renewing our sense of wonder and adventure, and helps to Neptune’s waters.  The Moon in Aries is bold and decisive, and can be aggressive, so beware of hot tempers flaring, though thankfully Aries doesn’t tend to hold a grudge, so any potential quarrels are likely to be over and forgotten as quickly as they begin.

Since Aries is ruled by Mars, it’s also good for restoring our drive, although our energies are still under Piscean sway for some weeks to come until Mars enters Aries toward the end of January.  This is a great time to get a jump on any exercise-related goals with that Aries drive to fuel us, and regain any courage that may have faltered during the past few days’ swim in if the winter weather permits, our Aries-fueled instincts will gladly lead us outdoors to blow off any steam generated by more martial temperaments and clear our heads in preparation to make good use of the rest of this Mercury retrograde, and be ready to hit the ground running when Mercury turns direct at the end of this week.
