Astrology Update, April 19th, 2017: Upheaval and Stability

This morning began with a trine from the Moon in Capricorn to Mars in Taurus in the wee early morning hours, lending stability and support to our emotions and putting our feelings in alignment with our actions.  For those of us still awake at that hour, or those waking up very early, this was a good boost to our ability to get the job done on a very practical level, whatever that job might be, as the Moon in Capricorn is emotionally motivating while Mars in Taurus has the energetic follow-through to that motivation.

A short while later the Moon in Capricorn squared the Sun in Aries, bringing us to the Last Quarter Moon during which we disseminate the intentions that we set at the New Moon and built up to the Full Moon.  Since the Moon squaring the Sun put our unconsciousness at odds with our consciousness, this was a time when the last little details of what we set into motion at the New Moon may have been jiggling around at the back of our minds, wringing out the last bit of our attention to them before we could truly release them, and our dreams during this time may have reflected that process.  The Moon is growing darker now, and our unconscious is similarly being cleared in preparation for the next intention-setting period of the New Moon.  Since this aspect started a brief void-of-course period, it was also a time in which the lessons of the Moon’s transit through Capricorn had a final dark, receptive space in which to be absorbed before the Moon entered Aquarius, which it did less than an hour later.

The Moon in Aquarius takes the seriousness of Capricorn and moves it away from a personal focus toward the betterment of humanity as a whole, making us more socially conscious and more interested in dedicating ourselves to causes that improve our world.  While the Moon in Aquarius is not a particularly emotionally sensitive placement, being in a rational air sign, it can make us feel more friendly, more interested in the world around us and the people within it.  We are likely to be more future-oriented during this transit, more interested in new technologies, more eager to try new things, and less interested in upholding the status quo.  The classical ruler of Aquarius is Saturn, the same as for Capricorn, and so we still may feel the influence of Saturn’s sense of order and limitation on our instinctive reactions, but the transcendental ruler of Aquarius is Uranus, the Great Rebel, so even as we feel our limitations we may be more inclined than ever to resist them and even throw them off outright.  The Moon transiting Aquarius encourages us to let our inner eccentric out to play, and our instinctive responses are now likely to be more difficult to predict.  We are more likely to want to try new things, meet new people, and test out new ways of doing things during this transit.

The Moon’s first activity during this transit is a testy morning square to Mercury retrograde in Taurus, challenging our fixed and stubborn ideas and encouraging us to get out of whatever rut we may have fallen into in our thinking.  Mercury in Taurus has encouraged us to be slow and steady and practical in our thinking, while the Moon in Aquarius may have us feeling like slow and steady and practical is for the birds.  Mercury retrograde is also revisiting ideas, mulling things over like a cow chewing its cud, and may be inclined to linger over-long in one area of thinking now.  Both signs are deeply stubborn, so this was not a challenge to be easily resolved, as we were forced to confront our own less-than-forward-thinking tendencies, but also watched our newly-found instinctive eccentricity be challenged by thought and communication patterns that saw no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater.  Urges toward freedom and change were tempered now by the questions of “is it practical?” and “do you really want this?”  As frustrating as the immobility of a square in fixed signs can be, this was a necessary tempering of our futurist instincts, asking us to be willing to do the hard work of integrating the practical with the ideal.

Late this afternoon the Sun entered Taurus, bringing the light of consciousness to practical realms as well, throwing what we need on the material level into focus now.  Taurus is very good at manifesting things in the real world, being a time of planting and preparation for the growth and activity of summer, so this is a good time to start taking our plans and putting them into action, slowly and steadily, while still mindful of our own health and comfort.  The Sun’s transit through Aries made us more conscious of our own desires and our will to put our mark on the world, and the transit through Taurus now takes the initiatory energy of Aries and really puts it to work, but sustainably rather than burning out in the fire of the tempestuous youngest sign.  Now is a time to appreciate the good things in life that are the fruits-to-come of our labors during this planting season.  This is a time when we are keenly aware of our creature comforts, and now that we are out of the lean times of winter we want to enjoy the things that make us feel good.  Taurus is ruled by Venus, recently turned direct, so work under this sign is not about privation, but rather has a strong aesthetic inclination and appreciates beauty, art, and stimulation of the senses.

Tonight the Moon in Aquarius sextiles Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, putting our future-leaning emotions and instincts into a supportive relationship with the part of our unconscious currently immersing itself in our ideals and patterns of belief.  Though Lilith’s action in Sagittarius can force us to confront our less evolved belief patterns, in this harmonious aspect with the Moon she may have given us new insight into how we can change those patterns, in keeping with the Moon in Aquarius’ urge toward stepping up our own evolution and that of our society.  This may have been a good time for talking with different people, exploring philosophical concepts, playing with new ideas and testing the boundaries of our beliefs in positive ways, as our unconscious instincts need to ensure that our newly-stabilized consciousness doesn’t get too rigid.

Astrology Update, April 18th, 2017: Mood Swings

In the early morning hours today the Moon in Capricorn squared Jupiter in Libra, amping up our emotions and putting our driven instinctive responses at odds with our more optimistic social tendencies.  For most of us in the Western Hemisphere, this aspect was in play while we were sleeping, but for the very early risers or those very late to bed, we may have felt that our faith and perseverance were challenged, and our relationships may have been tested in the process.  That said, Jupiter is still a very benevolent influence so our feelings overall during this time were likely to be good, but it is also likely that we were less inclined to see the nitty gritty details in our lives at this time, preferring to take a grander approach, and as a result we may have tended toward a bit of off-putting arrogance or devaluing of details that mattered to others, convinced that we had the one true philosophy of life and subtly (or not-so-subtly) communicating that in our attitude.

A few hours later Mercury in Taurus trined the North Node in Virgo, putting our minds at least back on a more detail-oriented track.  Mercury is currently retrograde, putting it between the Earth and the Sun, and Mercury’s influence was also extended at this time through its rulership of Virgo, so matters of thought, communication, travel, and technology were emphasized on this day, particularly in relation to manifesting our soul’s purpose in the material world.  Health matters were also emphasized, and it is possible that we could achieve real progress in regard to a health-related issue as a result of insights and communication on this day.

Shortly thereafter the Moon in Capricorn conjuncted Pluto, intensifying our emotions and bringing hidden things to light, including obsessions and compulsions.  During this time our real feelings were more likely to come to the surface, even those we thought deeply buried.  This was a time to watch out for power games, especially in our close relationships, and to recognize that where we may have felt out-of-control was likely to be indicative of deeper concerns to be explored on a more long-term basis once the transit has passed and we do not feel so overwhelmed.

The skies quieted down for the afternoon, until the Moon in Capricorn squared Uranus in Aries during the evening, increasing the likelihood of sudden upsets and changes, as the Moon’s unconscious cycles connected with and potentially exacerbated erratic Uranian energy.  We may have found ourselves unexpectedly more awake and restless at night, even hyperactive.  We are also likely to feel more impatient and contrary, inclined to disagree with people more out of a sense of contrariness than actual disagreement.  Technological troubles were a distinct possibility at this time.

A few hours later the Moon in Capricorn sextiled Chiron in Pisces easing up on some of the more distressing feelings of the previous two aspects and giving us a chance to assess some of our more difficult feelings with sympathy and compassion.  This would have been a good time to talk with a friend about our troubles, whether just sharing our own feelings or commiserating over mutual difficulties, as discussion of our pain at this time can be especially useful in yielding insight from others who have experienced similar situations.

Late that night the Moon in Capricorn sextiled Venus in Pisces, bringing Venus’ gentle connective power to support our emotions, and further emphasizing the enjoyment we may gain from being with friends and people we love.  Entertaining at home was especially favored by this aspect, and relationships in general got a loving and supportive boost at this time.

Astrology Update, April 16th, 2017: Connecting Wisdom and Growth

Today the Moon in Sagittarius got things started with this morning’s trine to Uranus in Aries, setting a speedy tone for the day with the Moon’s unconscious urge toward action and liveliness joining forces with Uranus’ will to sudden change and impulsiveness.  Since this was a harmonious aspect, this boost in activity was likely to be benevolent whether we rode along with it or simply observed the action from the sidelines, but it wasn’t likely to make for a boring time either way.

Shortly afterward, Mars in Taurus sextiled Chiron in Pisces, lending a practical energy to our learning and our understanding of our own weaknesses and limitations while bringing compassion and wisdom to our actions.  Today we are likely to have had more sympathy for illness and more active interest in matters of health.  We are also likely to be more persistent about getting to the roots of health problems or resolving paradoxes, and alternative health fields of study are favored at this time.

Later this morning the Moon in Sagittarius squares Chiron in Pisces, challenging this exploration of our patterns of health and injury with emotional and instinctive reactions that would rather have fun and not examine such potentially depressing patterns too closely.  We may have found ourselves feeling impatient with our own limitations or those of others this morning, or may have found that the truth of our situation when it comes to our health and our psychological sensitivities bumps up against deeply ingrained beliefs, particularly those shared with families and other groups.  We may have felt highly attuned to the tensions at the intersection of what we feel in relation to our health and the patterns of belief shared with others, and may have found those tensions coming to a head today.

A short while later the Moon in Sagittarius trined the Sun in Aries, renewing some of the lively energy from the early morning and putting our conscious and unconscious selves in harmony.  Our instinctive reactions worked along our conscious intentions today, making it easier for us to do what we truly wanted, and helping us to disseminate the intentions that we set at the New Moon and brought to their peak at the Full Moon.  Since both Luminaries are operating in fiery signs, this was definitely a time best devoted to action and creative, spirited endeavors.

However, a few minutes later the Moon in Sagittarius squared Venus in Pisces, and our emotions and instincts bumped up against our desire for connection and pleasure.  We may have wanted to take action but found ourselves enmeshed in lazier desires, feeling simultaneously energetic yet also slow and sensual.  We may have sensed a need to take connections slowly, yet found our instinctive responses to be too rushed, our timing off.

Around mid-day, the Moon conjuncted Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, and our mood may have turned more somber as a result, though not unbearably so.  Rather, we were likely to have seen where we needed to respect our limitations and those of others, and may have found ourselves more willing to shoulder responsibilities even in the midst of fun.  We may have also found ourselves more emotionally invested in our beliefs, particularly those that define us as part of a group, and were more likely to assert our emotional and philosophical boundaries at this time.

This aspect started a lunar void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, during which we were best off falling back on routine and allowing our unconscious to float in a state of receptivity, quietly processing the lessons of the Moon’s transit through Sagittarius before the Moon entered Capricorn early this evening, and since Saturn is Capricorn’s ruler, the Moon/Saturn conjunction that began this void-of-course aptly paved the way for us to react and feel with more seriousness and determination.

During this void-of-course period, Venus in Pisces conjuncts Chiron in Pisces, putting our affections in touch with our deepest hurts and those of others.  Since Venus is slower moving than the Moon, this influence sticks with us for a while, lingering into tomorrow.  This has us moving forward with the knowledge gained from Venus’ retrograde period of introspection, connecting with others through shared sympathy and compassion for each others’ hurts.  The wisdom that we have gained through painful learning experiences may seem like it can’t much help us, but it can be a great solace and aid to others now enduring similar situations.  The sharing of such wisdom then becomes a source of deeper connections between us.  Since Pisces is eldest sign, we may be again confronted by what we need to let go of in order to have the caring and wise connections that we most desire.  These connections can take on spiritual overtones, and during this transit we are more likely to see how they can have long-term impact on our lives and the lives of others around us.

The Moon’s entry into Capricorn tonight takes the seriousness of Saturn in Sagittarius and applies it to our most important goals, from the unconscious point of view.  If what we want consciously differs greatly from what we want consciously, that can pose some problems, but the Moon/Sun trine earlier today brought our conscious and unconscious desires into alignment, so chances are that what we get emotionally serious about during this transit will resonate on both conscious and unconscious levels.  Capricorn embodies determination, so we may find ourselves becoming more focused in our reactions during the next couple of days, less easily deterred from what we want.  We are likely to assert more persistence now, particularly in relation to our long-term goals, especially those focused on career and reputation, but really during this transit what matters most is what our hearts align with – nothing else will muster the same fervent devotion, and that heart alignment isn’t likely to be a matter of gushy love and flowers but rather what speaks deeply to our core being and our ancestral pride.  Capricorn is deeply traditional and the Moon is instinctual, so our emotions and reactions during this time will come straight from our roots.

More of that old soul feeling came tonight through the sextile of Venus in Pisces to Mars in Taurus, which is also in effect through tomorrow, and brings along with it a kindly and comfortable feeling that enhances sensual and sexual connections, and helps to keep our energy levels at a steady, even flow.  During this aspect our sympathies have more fortitude, our actions more kindness, and our appreciation of and desire for creature comforts, preferably shared with those who touch us on a spiritual level as well as practical and physical levels. We are likely to be a bit gentler with each other during this transit, yet not pushovers, as our compassion is balanced by our practicality.

A short while later tonight the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing more of that practicality into play but now applying it to what our souls most need.  Our ability to work with and resolve our karmic lessons gained the attentiveness and persistence of Capricorn, who is ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Karma, and the self-discipline associated with him has now come through on an instinctive level, our feelings attuned to whatever will most serve our souls’ needs tonight.  Shortly thereafter the Moon in Capricorn trines Mercury in Taurus, forming a Grand Earth Trine that pulls in our steady and practical mental capabilities into the circuit created with the North Node.  Our minds and emotions are put in harmony by the aspect, and working united with our souls’ learning process due to the configuration with the North Node, tapping into cardinal, fixed, and mutable earth energies simultaneously, and channeling the power of all three into what most needs doing in our lives.  This is a time when we can make incredible progress in our souls’ growth, putting the formidable power of our most practical thoughts and instincts to bear on working through our karma and living up to our souls’ purpose in this lifetime and those yet to come.

Astrology Update, April 12th, 2017: Powerful Imaginations

Today is a relatively quiet day, astrologically speaking, which is just as well considering all of the potent activity we’ve been experiencing with the retrogrades of both Saturn and Mercury in the past week, plus this past Saturday’s Venus/Saturn square and Monday’s Full Moon, as well as tomorrow’s Sun/Uranus conjunction that some of us may already be feeling some agitation from.

Today’s astrological activity started in the very wee early morning hours with an opposition from the Moon in Scorpio to Mercury in Taurus, creating a challenge between our practical thoughts and our intense emotions and instincts.  We may have found ourselves wanting to delve deeper into situations but simultaneously conscious of the need to not get distracted when dealing with materially-oriented tasks.  For most of us in the Western Hemisphere this aspect saw the most influence in our dreams, and it was worth noting any insights we arrived at in those realms, but for those of us who were awake we may have found ourselves more aware of previously hidden things, striving to keep our attention on practical matters even as we were drawn to more complicated and intense areas of focus.  We may also have experienced a disconnect between an intention to keep to the status quo and a dissatisfaction with practical sameness, especially when it keeps us from understanding and experiencing things more deeply.

For the rest of the day the skies are quiet until tonight, until the Moon in Scorpio trines Neptune in Pisces, encouraging us to exercise our imaginations in pursuit of the deeper emotional experiences we’ve been craving.  This is a time when our fantasies may serve us well, as well as stories and creativity – we are likely to enjoy theatrical performances more now, especially opera and ballet, and the more senses a form of art engages during this time the more we will appreciate it.  Those of us in romantic relationships can make good use of Neptune’s rose-coloured glasses tonight, as the Moon trining Neptune is deeply romantic, with the sweetness of Pisces and the intensity of Scorpio combining to create sensitive perceptions and enhanced psychic connections.  Our spiritual awareness can also be enhanced by this aspect, along with our compassion, though with the protective quality of Scorpio to balance our more fluid boundaries, if we are led astray by our ideals it is more likely to lead in a kindly direction than with a harder aspect.  The trine being the most supportive of aspects brings more of the virtues of each sign to bear on their interactions here.  Of course, there is still the danger of being swept away in the wave of emotions and instinctive reactions during this time, but at least it is likely to be a pleasant time, nonetheless.

Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

*******

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.
