Astrology Update, April 7th, 2017: Questioning Faith

Today started with an early morning conjunction between the Moon in Virgo and the North Node in Virgo, aligning our feelings and instincts with our karmic path and life purpose.  Since not many of us in the Western Hemisphere were awake at that hour and the Moon governs the unconscious, we may have found our dreams imparting clues to our direction during this time, but for those who were actually awake then we may have found ourselves more detail-focused and oriented toward our own growth and health, whether still awake from the night before or just waking up and getting ready to face the day.  Our minds may have been sharper during this time and our focus more practical, applying reason and discernment to practical actions now with potential long-term results.

As the morning progressed, the mental acuity of the Moon/North Node conjunction in Virgo was carried forward by a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Virgo’s ruler Mercury in Taurus, strengthening our mental staying power and helping our minds to act in harmony with our emotions, and vice versa.  Mercury in Taurus is steady, practical, and down-to-earth, so while this isn’t likely to be a time of brilliant insights it was a great time for getting things done that require mental focus and attention to detail, as our instinct during this time was to apply our minds to whatever process was necessary for achieving our aims in the material world.  Those of us waking to tend gardens, farms, and schools were especially favored this morning.

Later this morning the Moon in Virgo squared Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, bringing our logical instincts into conflict with our unconscious belief patterns and especially any need to be “right.”  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on unconscious levels, so we may not consciously realize what is happening, but Black Moon Lilith is very much about surrendering to an experience fully in order to gain the most knowledge from it through feminine receptivity before we can bring that knowledge into consciousness, and in Sagittarius she swims in a fiery sea of philosophical fervor, subjecting us to a bedlam of our own beliefs mixed in with those of others.  When well-aspected this placement allows us to feel where we are and are not in alignment with the beliefs around us as well as the ingrained beliefs we have absorbed from family and friends, but in this challenging aspect we instinctively know that something is not adding up – ideas that are powerfully emphasized both in and around us now are in conflict with the logical, rational mode of being that the previous two aspects of this morning have had us enjoying.  The cognitive dissonance is strong this morning.

The real astrological news of the day, however, is the opposition from the Sun in Aries to Jupiter retrograde in Libra.  Jupiter conveys authority, emphasizes the position of our leadership and our faith in our societal institutions, and when well-aspected helps us to maintain good fortune and a sense of optimism.  In Libra, Jupiter has been helping us to understand both our interpersonal relationships and partnerships, and our desire for social harmony.  Retrograde in Libra, Jupiter has had us reassessing how we maintain peace within our relationships and within the larger social order, and in the recent opposition to Uranus and subsequent square to Pluto, Jupiter retrograde has brought those questions to bear on both how we address the need for personal liberty within relationships and society and how we address the larger forces of institutional power.  The Sun brings the light of consciousness to bear on these issues now, and the opposition increases our awareness, and the tension between our conscious understanding of Jovian concerns and the reassessment of social faith that Jupiter retrograde has been engaged in.  And since Jupiter has a habit of magnifying everything that he touches, our awareness of these social and relationship concerns is likely to blow up into something huge today.  Our faith and optimism are affected today, whether becoming a smokescreen that we hide behind in the face of serious challenges to the social order or our relationships, or being emphasized by their lack, as we reconsider our own fortunes now.  This is in further keeping with the lessons regarding faith and ideals brought forward earlier by the square between the Moon and Black Moon Lilith, as Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and the challenging experiences of that sign that Black Moon Lilith has been submerging us in are now brought to the forefront of our consciousness with this Sun/Jupiter opposition.  And with the Sun in Aries, the right to self-determination is brought face-to-face with Jupiter in Libra’s emphasis on peace at all costs, so that we must come to grips with what degree of personal sacrifice we are willing to accept in the name of social harmony and continued faith in our leaders.

We’ll have plenty of time to stew on these matters this afternoon and evening, with no other notable astrological aspects muddling the mixture until late tonight, when the Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces, and our logic becomes confounded by fantasy and potentially illusion or delusion.  Tonight is a time to be cautious about being led down the garden path, whether by our own desires or the deception of others.  Our instincts will be to follow paths that are reasonable, rational, and factually-based, but our ability to assess what falls into those categories will be greatly hindered by the rose-coloured lenses through which we may view anything that appeals to our more universal or romantic ideals.  We are likely to find ourselves feeling more compassionate and wishing to help others in need, but should be wary of being taken advantage of in the process.  On the plus side, our creative vision and our dreams are enhanced by this placement – artists of all stripes are favored by this placement, and stage performances under this aspect may have a special glow as a result.  But anything requiring logic, focus, and keen mental abilities should be set aside for the night – this is not a time of seeing clearly, and we would do well not to agree to anything with potentially far-reaching consequences, including eating fairy food or accepting drinks from handsome strangers.  😉

Astrology Update, April 4th, 2017: What the Heart Wants

This morning started off with the Moon in Cancer squaring Uranus in Aries, giving an agitating feeling to the morning.  Our dreams may have proven disruptive since both the Moon and Uranus are highly intuitive, but their intuition shows itself in very different ways.  Some of us may have woken up earlier than usual as a result, or had a hard time focusing on the tasks to start our day, as the Moon in Cancer wants to stay comfy in familiar surroundings and Uranus in Aries wants to move boldly forward, often quite abruptly.  Or, we may have experienced some technological difficulties, as the Moon governs fluctuations and cycles, and Uranus governs sudden change and technology, and the two in hard aspect together can throw a monkey wrench in electronic works.

Whatever the case, we may have experienced a bit of stumbling around early this morning, whether figurative or literal, but later this morning the Moon in Cancer trined Chiron in Pisces, helping us to have compassion for both our stumbles and those of others, and to connect with each other over the things that pain us.  Our mutual frustrations can help us to understand each other, and this is one of the few influences where commiseration can actually yield real and mutually beneficial wisdom, so the latter half of the morning may well have helped us to make progress through and even because of our hurting places rather than just in spite of them.

This afternoon the Moon in Cancer trined Venus retrograde in Pisces and turned void-of-course at the same time.  This creates an interesting influence at this time, as the Moon is typically identified the feminine Luminary in astrology (the Sun being the masculine) and Venus is of course the feminine personal planet and also the feminine Benefic (Mars being the masculine personal planet and Jupiter being the masculine Benefic).  The void-of-course period is a time when the Moon is no longer making aspects to the major planets before entering a new sign (though she may still make aspects to the asteroids and Trans-Neptunian objects like Chiron), and therefore is considered to be in a passive, receptive state rather than an action-oriented state.  While female, male, and non-binary gendered people all have varying degrees of passive and active energies within them, passivity and receptivity are traditionally considered feminine qualities, and while there is certainly merit in rejecting the assumption that if one identifies as female one must be passive, nonetheless it can be considered a triumph of the patriarchy if, in our desire to not be chained by traditionally feminine qualities we reject them outright.  Yin (passive) and Yang (active) are both necessary qualities to keep the universe functioning.  The void-of-course period is considered to be a time when taking new and decisive action is ill-advised and not likely to turn out as desired precisely because it is a time meant for reflection, a time to be passive and receptive and absorb the lessons of this lunar transit before the Moon enters the next sign.  This is a time to fall back on routine in order to allow our unconscious to better function on this intuitive, receptive level, to let ourselves be open and empty before the information of a new sign enters our unconscious.

That new sign in this case is Leo, which the Moon enters late this afternoon.  A Leo Moon gives our emotions and instincts a proud bearing, louder and bolder than the Moon in Cancer.  The Moon in Leo bounds to center stage, eager to express our feelings for all the world to see.  This is not a timid Moon, to be certain.  Leo is all about self-expression and having a zest for life, and like the king of the jungle is eager to claim its throne.  I’ve long said that the way to make a Leo happy is to find whatever it is that they most consider their own and give it to them, because Leo wants what it considers to be its “lordly due,” and won’t be happy without it.  That “lordly due” could be something as simple as recognition of the Leo’s talents in one particular favored area, or just saying “hello” to Leo first among a group of people.  Once they get it, they shine like the Sun that rules this sign, and a shining Leo is a passionate and magnanimous light that can fill up a whole room.  So, with the Moon now entering Leo, a suggestion for this transit is to consider what our hearts and the hearts of others around us want as their “lordly due” and act on the generous nature of this Moon to grant it where possible.  This isn’t a matter of people-pleasing or self-indulgence, but rather a matter of understanding what we each need to shine, and recognizing how the shining of one heart under a Leo Moon’s influence can be contagious, in ways that benefit all who experience that light.

Considering what each person’s unconscious views as its deserved right is also a necessary tool for navigating conflict under this Leo Moon, and we’ll get the opportunity to put that tool to the test tonight when the Moon in Leo squares Mercury in Taurus.  The Moon in Leo can be demanding in its need for attention, but Mercury in Taurus is determined and practical, and not interested in catering to Leo’s grandiosity.  Our minds are concerned with getting things done in the material realm, whereas our emotions and instincts want fun!  Even big cats want to play, after all, and the patient, plodding mentality of Mercury in Taurus may seem like a boring stick-in-the mud in contrast.  Our conversations may stumble as a result, or generate friction and flaring tempers, as Leo just can’t understand why Taurus won’t stop whatever boring, practical thing it’s fixated on and pay attention, and our minds and hearts end up at odds.  Since Leo and Taurus are both fixed signs, neither one is likely to budge.  This challenge between what we want and what we think requires a certain degree of strategy and compromise to navigate, which doesn’t come naturally to either of these two signs.  Finding a way to make them both happy is our task for the night, giving attention to what matters most to both and in the process harnessing the combined power of Leonine enthusiasm and Taurean determination.  If these two can work together there is no power that can stop them.

Astrology Update, April 2nd, 2017: Deep Feelings

Today started off with a very early morning sextile from the Moon in Gemini to Uranus in Aries, heightening our need to try new things if we were awake at that hour (or still awake, in the case of West Coast night owls!).  The curiosity and inventiveness of Gemini fueled the rebel fire of Uranus, and for those of us prone to insomnia may have added to our restlessness, but since this was a harmonious sextile we were most likely to have gotten a Eureka moment or two to help make up for any lack of sleep, as this was a good supportive aspect to help boost the inventive and intuitive powers of the creative and scientifically-minded among us, and the perfect influence for late-night/early morning tech tinkerers.

Still relatively early in the morning the Moon in Gemini squared Chiron in Pisces, increasing the likelihood of those of us with chronic illnesses waking up sore, and frustrating our efforts to communicate effectively with others about what ails us.  Or, we may have found ourselves having difficulty being sympathetic to the ailments of others at this time, or may even have been unsympathetic to our own sensitivities, and pushed ourselves too hard right out of the gate this morning.  Whatever the case, this aspect is likely to have increased early morning grumpiness and irritability, and decreased patience in the process.  Those of us waiting on medical diagnoses or lab results were likely to experience frustration as well, and those of us working in these fields would do well to be extra diligent in re-checking our numbers and communications as the morning progresses, as this aspect is likely to test even the kindliest bedside manner.

Late this morning the Moon in Gemini opposes Saturn in Sagittarius, adding a serious and even depressive note to our feelings.  Our instincts now are more likely to tend to the pessimistic, and we may find ourselves more hesitant about our communication now, more uncertain of ourselves and less willing to take risks.  Or, we may find ourselves more inclined to compartmentalize our social dealings along tribal lines, unwilling to share our mental and emotional space with those who do not share our beliefs.  We may find ourselves speaking more abruptly, or more stridently, asserting our “rightness” when deep down we are in fact very uncertain of what is truly right, or we may find our words and social interactions bumping up against long-held beliefs that may no longer be truly serving us, or that we may realize are in fact severely limiting us.  This aspect heightens awareness of the disconnect between our desire to explore new ideas and communicate and ingrained belief patterns that are based in fear and insecurity and are ultimately divisive.  So while this aspect can be disruptive to our moods, it can help us to reconsider how our beliefs drive our instinctive responses.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with that last aspect, the late morning today is a time to stick to our routines and not embark on any bold new ventures or schedule any important meetings.  That said, it can be a good time for editing, correcting, repairing, and assessing areas of our lives and environments that need revision or cleaning up.

Around mid-day the Moon enters Cancer, coming into the sign that it rules and its place of power.  Our emotions and instincts are at home in watery Cancer, sensitive and attuned to the ebb and flow of life, and protective of self, home, and loved ones.  Cancer has a reputation for moodiness, but really is concerned with creating safe space for genuine feeling to flow freely.  This is why Cancer is associated with home, and mother – under this sign the Moon shows us the truth of our feelings, which are not static from moment to moment, and our instinctive reactions are more deeply intuitive now.  We are more likely to listen to others now, and more interested in being around people we already know – our friends and family are especially important to us now.  We may find ourselves a bit more critical now toward those who we deem insensitive, and while we are very good at riding out changes under this influence, we are also a bit more risk-averse.  This aspect makes for canny business dealings among those attuned to this energy, as Cancer may govern home but its protectiveness of what we deem our own extends to business matters that we are heavily invested in, whether emotionally or practically or both.  Plus, Cancerian sensitivity increases our ability to sense the emotions of others, to read the mood of a room when we walk in, and thus more accurately assess the currents of our social and business dealings and know intuitively when a deal is about to go bad, or when is the exact right moment to step in and seize the advantage.  Professions that deal with caring for others such as nursing and psychology may benefit under this influence, but so may those that rely on social engineering and keen instincts, including politics and trading, such as retail sales or import and export businesses.  Small business owners are especially favored during this time.

Within minutes of entering Cancer the Moon squares off against Venus retrograde in Aries, putting our already beleaguered pleasures and affections at odds with our instincts, and making it more difficult for us to connect with others.  We may feel as though whatever we want for ourselves is out of reach due to social pressure or timing, or we may feel a conflict between new friends and old, or between a new love and our family.  Since the Venus retrograde has had us reassessing the ways in which we express and experience pleasure and connection as well as self-image, our insecurities may be heightened by this aspect, and we are likely to feel social discord more deeply and distressingly.  We may find ourselves less willing to make waves as a result, and may give in more easily on matters of importance to us just to keep from making ourselves or others feel worse.

Thankfully, this afternoon the Moon in Cancer sextiles Mercury in Taurus, helping us to feel more steady and secure and to express our feelings in practical, grounded terms.  Our thoughts and intuitions are in alignment with this aspect, and our ability to read the situations we find ourselves in is enhanced without throwing our moods off so easily.  This is a great time for sympathetic communication that doesn’t drown in emotion – we are able to listen carefully and understand instinctively what others are feeling, while remaining level-headed ourselves.  This is a great problem-solving influence, especially for problems that contain a social component.

This problem-solving capacity is built on further this afternoon as the Moon in Cancer sextiles the North Node in Virgo, putting our emotions in alignment with our karmic path and personal growth, particularly as it relates to our health, daily habits, and the ways in which we are of service to others.  Relations with pets are favored now, especially service animals, and we can gain greater understanding of how our emotions and relations with family and friends affect our health.  The North Node in Virgo has been a time of spiritual development that is grounded in the real world, and with this sextile to the Moon in Cancer our lessons gain the wisdom of our intuitions and our emotional connections.  Now is a time for intuiting what practical steps we need to take in pursuit of our personal development, and for connecting our growth with that of those with whom we feel emotional kinship.

The big astrological news of the day is the last notable event of the night, when Venus retrograde enters Pisces, and the introspection we’ve been doing regarding our self-image and how we connect with others turns less self-concerned and more universal.  We are likely to find our compassion expanded under this influence, and may find ourselves giving our affections more readily to hard-luck cases and those who inspire our sympathy.  Since Venus is still retrograde (and will be until April 15th), we may still be more tentative with our love, but we are also more sensitive to such matters now, and more inclined toward romanticism.  Venus’ retrograde path through Pisces asks us to reconsider how our affections tap into more universal experience, how we are connected on a broader level as a result of the ways in which we get personal.  Our sense of aesthetics is likely to be softer now, our ways of expressing our desires gentler.  We are more likely to be accepting of contradictions and paradoxes in our relationships now, more able to go with the flow, and we can better intuit our way through our interactions with others.  That said, we are more likely to wear rose-coloured glasses when it comes to our affections now, and should be mindful of our choices in order to avoid getting led down the garden path, especially in romantic endeavors.  Still, this is a time when we can reconnect with our romantic souls, feeling the spiritual side of love and affection, and understanding more deeply what those things mean to us.

Astrology Update, April 1st, 2017: Big Talk

This morning the Moon in Gemini sextiled the Sun in Aries, fueling the warmth of our action-oriented Aries consciousness with unconscious liveliness and an instinct for communication.  We may have found ourselves pleasantly restless, energetic and ready to get going even if we are not normally morning people.  Our feelings were aligned with our consciousness, our core sense of self animated and courageous, eager to set out on the day’s adventures.  When Gemini and Aries join forces we can experience a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around us, even wonder, and will happily communicate that with anyone who will listen, making for a convivial mood to start the day with.

A short while later, however, the Moon in Gemini squared Neptune in Pisces, putting our mood into a fog and making us more likely to be led astray by unrealistic expectations.  The Moon in Gemini has our instincts operating on an intellectual level but Neptune in Pisces blurs the edges of our unconscious perceptions, creating a sense of distrust and uncertainty, and we may have found ourselves in situations this morning that beguiled us with something that stirred our sympathies only to leave us feeling taken advantage of by something or someone not living up to our original impressions.  We may have found ourselves wanting to escape for a bit, wishing the real world would go away, and the traces of this feeling may have lingered even into mid-day.

Thankfully, tonight we get our curiosity and sociability renewed via a trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra, expanding our instinct to communicate and increasing our feelings of faith and optimism.  This is a great time to meet new people, or to build upon already-established relationships that can benefit from sharing ideas.  Mutual enjoyment of films and media is favored at this time, and actors have an auspicious alignment for connecting with their audiences now.  This is a great time for generating ideas, especially for writers and inventors, and speech writers and preachers can create some of their more inspiring work at this time.  This is a night for orators!  It’s also a good night for networking and sales, as well as a good night for games, and a night for testing our luck – if we’ve been a bit too risk-averse tonight might help us to get out of whatever rut we’ve been languishing in, especially if that risk we’ve been avoiding involves communication or relationships.

Late tonight Gemini’s ruler Mercury in Taurus trines the North Node in Virgo, the other Mercury-ruled sign, putting the power of our minds to work on behalf of our souls’ purpose.  Though our emotions and instincts may be feeling a bit giddy due to the larger-than-life connection of the Moon/Jupiter trine, our minds have the practical fortitude of Taurus helping us to learn from our experiences and grow more fully into the people our souls want us to be.  We are likely to be more conscious of the details of our growth process, more concerned with perfecting new skills that lead us in the direction we most need to go, yet thanks to the steadiness of Taurus more patient than ever with our own imperfections.  In combination with the lucky favor of the Moon/Jupiter trine, this makes tonight a great time to try the new things that can help us to make real progress in both the material and spiritual worlds, moving forward on our souls’ quest to be our own best selves.

Astrology Update, March 31st, 2017: Curious Gardens

Today started with the Moon void-of-course in Taurus for many hours, so this was not a morning for rushing out of the gate or embarking on any bold new initiatives.  Not that such a course was likely with the Moon in slow and steady Taurus – chances are that we were more inclined to roll over and stay in bed for a while longer than usual.  Since the early morning hours also saw the Moon sextiling Chiron in Pisces, we may have found ourselves in a more dreamy state anyway, nursing old wounds and finding ways to comfort ourselves and work through our sensitivities without a whole lot of physical movement.  Chances are that more than a few of us hit the snooze button a couple extra times in the process.

Late this morning the Moon entered Gemini, turning our patient and practical Taurean instincts into something much more quick-moving and much less patient.  Curious, inventive Gemini sets our instincts and emotions on a faster track, eager to see and do and explore and learn, skimming the surfaces of all of the shiny things like a dragonfly.  This is a mental sign, ruled by Mercury, so we’re not so interested in being emotive; though we are much more likely to talk about our emotions with the Moon in this placement, chances are that we do so from the standpoint of theory rather than practice.  This is not a time for expecting ourselves to feel deeply or have long heartfelt talks, but rather a time for flirting, testing, tasting, seeing what gets us where.  This is a time for quick assessment of things we might like to revisit later.  It’s a time for networking, communicating, and experimenting, and those of us working in sales, media, entertainment, or in scientific fields are likely to benefit.

Toward mid-day Mercury entered Taurus, so the even as our emotions and instincts are speeding up with Gemini, the ruler of that sign is slowing down and becoming more earthy, grounded, and practical.  This makes for an interesting balancing effect, keeping the Moon and our emotions from getting dosed with too much flightiness as our thoughts are steadying themselves after all of the action-orientation that Mercury had in Aries.  The ideas that we wanted to go racing after in Aries now have the perseverance of Taurus to keep them going, and the practical capacity for manifestation in the real world.  Our thoughts and communication now are oriented toward what is real, what we can see and touch.  Because Taurus is ruled by Venus, we are also likely to be most concerned with what we value, as well as what and whom we have affection for and take pleasure in.  While our emotions are becoming more light-hearted and desiring fun, our thoughts are becoming more serious, though also more inclined toward hedonism.  Taurus is deeply concerned with material pleasures and comforts, so chances are that we will be thinking and communicating more about what will gain us those pleasures and comforts, but then we will want to get a chance to enjoy them, especially with the Moon in Gemini egging us on to try things out!  This is not a time for self-denial, unless it’s in the name of something we want far more than some temporary pleasure, or that pleasure requires too much movement and effort to get to it.  Though our emotions are highly changeable under Gemini, our thoughts under Taurus are not, and we may get into some mental ruts during this time.  However, we are also likely to have a highly developed aesthetic sense now, appreciating art and beauty more during this time.

In keeping with the connection between the Moon in Gemini and Mercury in Taurus, soon after Mercury entered Taurus the Moon in Gemini sextiled Taurus’ ruler Venus retrograde in Aries, and the fire of our affections got refueled by the airy fun of Gemini.  Venus retrograde may be reconsidering how we connect with others now, but with the support of communicative and responsive Gemini we may have seen some flirtatious back-and-forth early this afternoon, particularly via text or Snapchat, since Gemini favors communication via technology, especially in the pursuit of romance.  Venus’ warmth has coloured our emotions this afternoon as well, giving a more kindly and pleasurable feeling to our day.

This afternoon the Moon in Gemini squares the North Node in Virgo, challenging the process of our souls’ perfection through our chatty and curious instincts.  Both Gemini and Virgo are mutable signs, flexible and adaptable, and both are ruled by Mercury, so on an intellectual level at least these two get along.  But Gemini is an air sign, with ideas that move and change and are dropped just as easily as they are picked up, whereas Virgo is earthy, practical, concerned with the details that lead to growth, and far more patient than Gemini, but also far more critical.  Gemini operates more in the realm of fantastic possibility, whereas Virgo operates more in the realm of realistic probability.  On the plus side, the North Node tends to respond better to challenges than planets and luminaries do, as challenges promote growth and the North Node is all about growth, especially in Virgo.  This afternoon and evening then are a time for learning how to navigate this space between possibility and probability, fun exploration and instructive process, in pursuit of our souls’ path and our purpose in this life.

All aspect times used in creating this post are calculated for Pacific Standard Time.  I tend to speak in broad terms when I reference time on this blog, referring to time-frames like “morning” or “afternoon” rather than specific times, since I still have a lot of friends on the East Coast who read these posts and I’d like them to be pertinent to those friends as well as folks here on the West Coast.  Readers from further abroad will need to adjust time-frames accordingly.

Please keep in mind that we all have different responses to the aspects of the day because we all have different natal and progressed charts with which these aspects interact.  If you would like to know more about your own natal and progressed charts in order to better understand how the aspects of the day will affect you, please take a look at my astrological services, and let’s get started on helping you to understand your life better!  The threads of fate can only be adjusted when we start from a place of deep self-knowing.
