Astrology Update, April 20th, 2017: Back Into Darkness, and Back Into Light

I’ve been off the radar for the past couple of days as I wrapped up my trip to the East Coast and returned home to the Pacific Northwest.  As previously mentioned, I’ve been struggling with some health issues recently, so on days when there has been enough going on in the physical world to challenge my ability to write, I’ve recently made the choice to let the writing take a back seat to practical concerns.  Hopefully now that I’m back home that will be happening less often, but given the extent of the health issues that have been confronting me, I’m not making any promises for now.  Though I continue to pay attention to the daily astrological activity and write and make art to the extent that I am able, Saturn and I are currently having a heated discussion about my limitations, especially regarding communication, energy, and health, and on some days I simply have to give the Lord of Karma his due.  For the sake of continuity, I’ve posted my thoughts on the astrological happenings of April 18th here and April 19th here, so at least you can reflect on what has happened even if my observations are no longer so timely.

Today the activity in the skies is limited, though no less important.  This morning Pluto stationed retrograde in Capricorn, emphasizing matters of complexity in our lives, along with issues of power and control, particularly in relation to hidden forces.  Institutions were likely to come into focus today, especially those that can impact our livelihoods and long-term goals.  During this retrograde we are asked to reconsider those long-term goals and what we do to achieve them – are the power plays that we may find ourselves in really worth it?  Where do we feel in control and where do we feel out of control, and in both cases, is that control real or an illusion?  How is our power dependent on others?  Do we recognize the power in others and do we share our power or hoard it, fearful of it slipping away?  Secrets come into play at this time – do we really know the truth of our situation, or is there information that needs to be revealed before we can proceed?  Our dedication may be tested during this transit, and we may find ourselves forced to confront endings that may feel dire, the deaths of parts of our lives that we need to let go of but whose loss we haven’t yet reconciled ourselves to.  We are likely to have intense internal conversations now, and may have to come to grips with denied or repressed parts of ourselves that just can’t bear to stay hidden any longer.  This retrograde lasts until the end of September, so we have several months to dig deep into the darkest parts of our psyches and wrestle with our choices there.

Toward midday Mercury retrograde enters Aries, moving back into thoughts and communications centered around ourselves, our identities, and our desire to make our mark on the world.  Mercury has been steadily retracing his steps through Taurus, concerned with rethinking practical matters and how we plan and communicate about what we want to manifest in the material world.  Now Mercury returns to the roots of that manifestation, the personal inspiration of the youngest sign that wants to be the big damn hero, and our thoughts get a boost of newness and wonder even as we re-cover familiar ground.  Our thoughts may speed up now, and we may become more impulsive, less inclined to ruminate and more inclined to race.  We may find our words becoming a bit bolder again, and maybe a bit aggressive, perhaps accompanied by a dose of foot-in-mouth disease, and may wonder “didn’t we get over this already?”  This portion of the Mercury retrograde transit may force us to revisit those places where our ego gets us into trouble, where our talk is just a little too big and our cunning plans for making the world our oyster haven’t been thought all the way through.  The good news is that this is a time to re-think those plans, to take the time that Mercury in Aries isn’t normally inclined to take, so that when he goes direct again we really can move forward with a gusto, and yes, maybe we really can be big damn heroes.

As if to shine some lunar blessing on that plan, this afternoon saw the Moon in Aquarius trining Jupiter retrograde in Libra, giving a big dose of Jovian benevolence to our emotions and instincts, and helping us to feel as though all is right with the world, or at least if it isn’t just yet, it can be.  The forward-thinking and evolutionary urges of the Moon in Aquarius combine with the social optimism of Jupiter in Libra, and allow us to blend Jupiter retrograde’s reconsideration of our relationships and social contracts and what we do to maintain them with a fervor for the attitudes and causes that give us hope.  Through all the backtracking and reassessment of key areas of our lives happening during this time of four planets retrograding (Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto), there is still a lot to be happy about, and the Moon trine Jupiter helps us to feel it.

Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.

Astrology of January 4th, 2017: Regaining Courage

 psychic-eye-right

Mercury has been traveling back through the first half of Capricorn during this retrograde period and this morning enters Sagittarius again for the final leg of its reflective journey, moving our thoughts this week away from our goals and back into the ideology that sent us in pursuit of them.  Now is the time for us to meditate on why we have chosen the path that we are on, and consider if those beliefs are truly our own, and truly in alignment with who we want to be.

Our emotions will challenge our thoughts in this regard shortly after Mercury’s entry into Sagittarius’ volatile realm, as the Moon in Pisces squares Mercury.  Our emotions and instincts are still in the Piscean mode of compassion and unity, and aren’t too keen on the “us-versus-them” mentality of a Sagittarian landscape currently dominated by a restrictive Saturnine outlook.  Plus, it’s never comfortable when the mind clashes with the heart, and we could wind up tripping over our tongues this morning as a result.  Thankfully, the void-of-course period that follows is very short (6 minutes!), and the Moon entering Aries gives us a bit more confidence.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer from any residual foot-in-mouth disease, but Aries is so eagerly in constant pursuit of the new that any verbal stumbles are likely to be quickly forgotten.  Aries is good for renewing our sense of wonder and adventure, and helps to Neptune’s waters.  The Moon in Aries is bold and decisive, and can be aggressive, so beware of hot tempers flaring, though thankfully Aries doesn’t tend to hold a grudge, so any potential quarrels are likely to be over and forgotten as quickly as they begin.

Since Aries is ruled by Mars, it’s also good for restoring our drive, although our energies are still under Piscean sway for some weeks to come until Mars enters Aries toward the end of January.  This is a great time to get a jump on any exercise-related goals with that Aries drive to fuel us, and regain any courage that may have faltered during the past few days’ swim in if the winter weather permits, our Aries-fueled instincts will gladly lead us outdoors to blow off any steam generated by more martial temperaments and clear our heads in preparation to make good use of the rest of this Mercury retrograde, and be ready to hit the ground running when Mercury turns direct at the end of this week.

Astrology of January 3rd, 2017: Practical Hopes

 dragon-poster-style

While we are still under a dreamy Piscean Moon, today’s alignments put our feet back on the ground, for better or for worse.  That process of grounding started in the early morning hours today with the Moon in Pisces sextile to the Sun in Capricorn, putting any lingering romantic feelings and instincts left over from last night in harmony with our more practical consciousness.  Several hours later the Moon sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, adding Plutonian focus and intensity to what we feel, but with less of the controlling edge sometimes present in Moon/Pluto aspects.

Around mid-day Mercury in Capricorn sextiles Venus in Pisces, aligning our thoughts and communications with our pleasures and affections, and combining a practical, goal-oriented dedication with a desire for connective, spiritual experiences.  This is a great time to work on what matters to us, whether alone or as part of a team.

All of this makes the first half of the day a good time to think and communicate about what furthers our highest goals, and take positive actions in support of those goals, since we are likely to be enjoying the process and able to feel the transformative action of the changes in our lives in a harmonious way rather than feeling unsettled by them.  This morning and afternoon carry forward the flow state from yesterday in a way that we can harness, albeit with a certain rosy-glow in our attitude that may not be entirely realistic.  Still, the optimism that these alignments bring is refreshing and well worth enjoying.  Realism isn’t always the best tool for manifesting our dreams – we need some faith and hope in order to keep ourselves motivated and feel the value in our goals enough to achieve them, and these alignments deliver!

Unfortunately, this mood doesn’t last for the entire day, though the Mercury/Venus sextile may help to soften the discomfort of this evening’s Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius.  This placement of Saturn in Sagittarius has forced us to confront the shadow side of fervent belief and the divisive quality of us-versus-them attitudes when it comes to our most cherished ideals.  And the Moon in Pisces really wants nothing to do with that.  This Lunar placement is sensitive and spiritual, and it doesn’t want walls between us, and finds loud arguments disconcerting at best if not outright horrifying.  While there are certainly times for courage in standing up to demagoguery and fanaticism, tonight we may find ourselves feeling a bit raw and worn out by it all, and probably a bit depressed as well.  If it’s possible to take a strategic retreat now is a good time to do so, but if forced into confrontations that we are not yet equipped to handle we need to take a deep breath and remember that this too shall pass.  There is a time to fight, and a time to tend to our wounds, and tonight it’s important to be aware of which is which.

Astrology of January 2nd, 2016: Flow State

batik-2-glow

Today sees the tail end of the potentially confusing influence of Saturday’s Mars/Neptune conjunction as well as the Saturn/Uranus trine that has been lingering for the past two weeks.  Normally trines are wonderful, favorable energy to work with, but since Uranus has been squaring my natal Sun/Mercury/Venus during this time, even Saturn’s assistance has made it difficult for me to get focused, as is probably the case for a lot of us third decanate cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), and the Mars/Neptune conjunction on top of my natal North Node has just added to the muddle, so I’m hoping that having that conjunction move out of orb soon will help me to get back on track.

However, given the alignments of today, that lack of focus isn’t likely to dissipate until tomorrow at the earliest, and first decanate mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) may also continue to find themselves feeling their way through the fog tonight due to two potentially challenging Lunar conjunctions.  But I’m getting ahead of myself…

The Moon entered watery, sensitive Pisces in the wee hours of this morning, and received some gentle support from a sextile to Mercury in Capricorn a few hours later.  Since Mercury is still retrograde, this may have increased tendencies toward introspection, but could also have resulted in some sympathetic conversations to start off the day, as our emotions and instincts lean toward compassion under the Pisces influence.

Tonight, the Moon in Pisces conjuncts Neptune in Pisces, with a conjunction between the Moon and Mars a couple of hours later.  This reinforces the remaining influence of Saturday’s Mars/Neptune conjunction, keeping our energies more subtle and subdued, and potentially making us uncertain of which direction to go, lost in a dreamy fog.  At the same time, the Moon conjuncting Mars tends to be an aspect that heightens our aggression, but in Pisces and in close succession to the conjunction with Neptune, that aggression is more likely to be passive-aggressive or manipulative than outright explosive, as would be likely in more combustible signs.

Given Pisces’ spiritual and creative tendencies being so strongly reinforced by Neptune (Pisces’ transcendental ruler) within the emotional, instinctual realms of the Moon and the active realm of Mars, this is a good night to create – art, music, poetry, writing, dancing – and to focus on spiritual matters and practices – meditation, spellwork, divination, dreaming.  With so many planets and the Moon in Pisces, this is a great opportunity to really get into the flow state with what matters most to us in these areas of our lives, and potentially make great progress through enjoyment of the process rather than concern for achievements.

With Venus entering Pisces late tonight, following on the heels of her conjunction with the Moon last night, our enjoyment of Piscean activities like these is heightened along with our romantic tendencies, and our affections softened.  This is a beautiful night for lovers to connect deeply and sweetly, through shared dreams and sensuality.  Tonight our actions, emotions, and dreams can all align and help us to dissolve the boundaries between us, gently reminding us of what it feels like to be unified in love.
