Astrology Update, April 15th, 2018, New Moon in Aries: Flowering Desires

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries falls between Uranus and Eris, within orb to be conjunct to both. New Moons align the consciousness of the Sun with the instincts and emotions of the Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon.

The potential for new beginnings at this New Moon is heightened by the conjunction to Uranus, which brings the power of sudden insight and radical change. The conjunction to Eris combined with Mercury stationing direct at this time emphasizes a need for honesty in communication, which the Aries placement strengthens. Since Uranus operates as the higher expression of Mercury, the potential for sudden insight from unexpected directions is amplified, along with the need to apply lessons from this recent retrograde to communications regarding that insight as we move forward.

This New Moon also sees a Triangle of Potential between Jupiter in Scorpio opposite Venus in Taurus with Jupiter sextile Pluto in Capricorn and Pluto trining Venus. Capricornian Pluto in the mix may help mitigate the self-indulgence associated with Jupiter opposite Venus or it could intensify it, but regardless we are likely to experience heightened optimism and desire for the good things in life, with all of the powerful, earthy sensuousness that Venus in her home sign of Taurus brings to the table being ramped up by the combined forces of Jupiter and Pluto. That Jupiter/Pluto combination can bring hidden feelings to the forefront now, so if you’ve been quietly carrying a torch for someone, now is the perfect time to express those feelings.

The Triangle of Potential magnifies our desires and the capacity to manifest what we want on both a practical and emotional level, and in combination with the Sun/Moon conjuncting and bridging Uranus/Eris during the Mercury station emphasizing the need for both change and honest communication, gives us an opportunity to make major improvements in our lives that serve our own needs but can also strengthen our connections with others. Mars in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces now, aligning our efforts with our ideals, enhancing sensuality, and helping to keep our actions compassionate. This combination of alignments makes this a lovely New Moon for taking new steps in relationships, especially those of a romantic nature, and also makes this a great time for embarking on new creative endeavors.

Astrology Update, April 25th, 2017: Bright Day, Restful Night

This morning got started in the wee hours with a challenging square from the Moon in Aries to Pluto retrograde in Capricorn, putting our emotions and instincts at odds with the hidden and transformational forces in our lives, and ratcheting up our obsessive tendencies and fears of losing control.  For those of us in the Western Hemisphere, this aspect most likely only troubled our dreams, but for those of us who were awake at that hour we may have found ourselves engaged in unexpected power struggles regarding our autonomy, particularly in relation to work or in dealing with the institutions in our lives, and those of us waking up early may have still experienced residual frustrations or impediments to our self-direction as a result of this aspect.

The rest of the morning was fairly quiet until around midday when the Moon in Aries conjuncted Uranus in Aries, increasing feelings of restlessness as it amplified our desire to be free of restrictions.  Technology and nerves may have been impacted as Uranus has an electrifying quality that can fry circuits of both the organic and inorganic kind, especially for those of us with a strong kinesthetic sense and those of us with Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or personal planets in the third decanate of cardinal signs.  We may have received unexpected news or experienced disruptions to our usual routines, but also may have experienced breakthroughs resulting from the connection of our unconscious with Uranus’ intuitive genius.

That intuitive boost could have been carried forward into the afternoon as a result of the Moon’s next interaction, a conjunction with Mercury retrograde in Aries that put our thoughts and emotions on the same motivated page, working in unison toward our goals.  That said, having our thoughts subject to our moods may have impacted our decision-making ability, and we may have found ourselves highly distracted, with our thoughts and feelings changing rapidly, especially given the Aries tendency to chase everything new and shiny.  Still, we were much more likely to be vocal about our feelings during this time, so it could have been a good opportunity to give voice to our emotions that we might be hard-pressed to express otherwise.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trined Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, bringing a bit more seriousness and discipline to our mood, allowing us to focus on practical matters and push through adversity to get things done.  After the expressiveness of the Moon conjuncting Mercury, the trine to Saturn may have brought on an abrupt about-face in terms of our willingness to share our emotions with others, not out of a desire to hide them per se, but rather out of a heightened sense of self-sufficiency.  Whatever eccentric or experimental tendencies we experienced under the earlier Moon/Uranus conjunction, this afternoon and early evening we are more inclined to stick to methods that are tried and true, and take a more conservative approach overall.  This is especially true since this aspect starts a void-of-course period that encourages us to stick to routine for several hours, unconsciously processing the lessons of the past few days’ lunar transit through Aries, and avoiding any new enterprises as we wrap up old business and tend to things that need fixing or refining.

Tonight the Moon enters Taurus, settling down a bit from the energetic fervor of Aries and taking on a more practical and comfortable tone.  Taurus is the fixed earth sign most concerned with how things get done on the material plane, desirous of fiscal and physical security and willing to go the distance to secure home and its comforts, but also recognizing the need for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment of the good life when the day is done.  Tonight we are likely to want to enjoy our creature comforts and sensory pleasures, as Venus rules Taurus after all, and Venus is currently transiting dreamy and sensual Pisces.  Our enjoyment of the arts is increased by this transit, and chances are that we won’t adhere to our diets as strictly, nor be in much of a hurry about whatever we want to do – Taurus likes to take its time and enjoy life, even when hard at work.

Late tonight the Moon in Taurus trines the North Node in Virgo, emphasizing our path toward growth and personal achievement in a gentle and supportive way, so that we instinctually focus on our souls’ desires and what we need to do to achieve them.  There is a pleasing sense of fatedness about this aspect, a sense of all being right with the world and our slow but steady progress in it, that sets the stage for tomorrow morning’s New Moon in Taurus, and the intentions we set for ourselves with it.  Since this aspect will still be loosely in orb at the time of the New Moon, and it’s the only lunar aspect that the Moon will make for the first half of the day, it will be a quietly supportive New Moon with a focus on the Taurean virtues of steady persistence, care of the body, and rest, so tonight is a perfect night to do just that – rest and relax, dreaming kindly intentions for our bodies and our practical needs for this upcoming lunar cycle.

Astrology Update, March 28th, 2017: Impersonal Forces Up Close

As mentioned in relation to last night’s New Moon in Aries, Jupiter in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn are moving into an exact square at the end of this month, and we are already feeling its effects, which are highlighted today in a series of aspects with the Moon.

On the national and international stages we have been seeing Pluto transiting the sign he was in at the time of the United States’ founding as a nation, in what is known as a Pluto return, the first return that he has made for this country.  Since Pluto deals with power and institutions, as well as buried secrets, we are now being brought face-to-face with the hidden things this country was founded on, the inequality of women, the exploitation of slaves and immigrants, the genocide of Native Americans.  Pluto is slow-moving, and we still have a few more years before the return becomes exact, but both as a country and as individuals we are already feeling the intensity of this return, and it is being exacerbated by the transits of first Uranus and now Jupiter in hard square aspects to Pluto, moving in and out of a loose T-square formation over the past year.  Uranus and Pluto formed a series of exact squares seven times between 2012 & 2016, bringing the disruptive force of Uranian rebellion to bear upon the power structures represented by Pluto, and then this winter Uranus and Jupiter have moved in and out and back into opposition, pitting the need for individual freedom against the social order and desire for interpersonal peace and harmony.  Jupiter and Uranus are now moving out of that opposition, though they’ll return to it once again in September, and now it’s time for Jupiter and Pluto to have a go at it again, having previously squared off last spring and summer.

Jupiter deals with our faith and optimism, our sense of good fortune, our luck, and he magnifies whatever he touches, making the matters of the sign he is transiting seem larger-than-life.  In Libra, Jupiter is deeply concerned with social order and harmony, and with relationships, especially partnership.  Jupiter is also an authority figure, the king of the gods, ruler in both an earthly sense and a heavenly one.  Squaring off against Pluto brings the secrets of authority figures to light, reveals the flaws and power struggles of our leaders, and pits wealth and power against benevolent authority.  Judicial authority comes into question under this influence, as does the efforts of corporations to buy their way into governmental power.  And on a personal level, we may experience shake-ups in our fortunes, our finances, our faith, and our relationships, all connected to intense power struggles, whether or not we are directly taking part in them.  Feelings of helplessness may be magnified now, or we may find ourselves obsessively determined to hold onto even the slightest sliver of control, only to discover that sense of control is in fact an illusion.  On a spiritual level, we may find ourselves undergoing a “Dark Night of the Soul,” struggling to maintain any faith in the face of overwhelming odds that are reshaping our lives in patterns we don’t recognize and don’t know how to counter on our own, while all that we have previously put our faith in seems engaged in its own battles, and ill-equipped to assist us with ours.

This is the dynamic that our lunar unconscious is tapping into today.  Late this afternoon the Moon in Aries first squares Pluto in Capricorn and then about 20 minutes later opposes Jupiter in Libra, bringing this generational drama alive on a personal level.  Our emotions and instincts first are challenged by forces of change beyond our control, operating on a practical level that affects our goals and potentially affects our careers and reputations as well, yet may also hit us on even deeper levels.  Pluto isn’t simply about change but more importantly about deep transformation, the kind that can goes hand-in-hand with life-threatening illness or even death.  Even when our physical lives are not affected, our souls undoubtedly are, as Pluto is never mild in action, demanding that we confront our deepest and most frightening secrets.  With the Moon bringing Plutonian intensity into our emotions and instinctive reactions, we may find ourselves driven by fears and issues of control, or engaging in compulsive behaviors that we are hard-pressed to explain even to ourselves.  The Moon in Aries is hard-headed and impulsive and wants us to do things our own way, but up against Pluto in Capricorn is likely to find us thwarted by bureaucratic forces beyond our control, the powers-that-be meddling and making a mess of things in ways that we are not only ill-equipped to resist but unusually upset by.  Our emotions this afternoon are likely to range from frustration to anger to depression, but whatever we feel it is likely to be intense.

With the Moon opposes Jupiter shortly after Pluto, we may feel resistant to all efforts to engage peaceably with others, especially in relation to whatever obstacles or forced changes Pluto is making us endure.  We may feel outright hostile, immediately rushing into the fray even when fighting is not necessary or is in fact counter-productive.  On the flip side we could find ourselves so longing for peace and tranquility that we immediately allow ourselves to become doormats, capitulating to whatever demands are made of us in the hope that whatever giant, scary forces are bearing down on us will finally leave us alone.  The intensity of our feelings in the throes of the Moon/Pluto square is amplified by the Moon/Jupiter opposition, and since all of this is operating on the unconscious level and triggered by the big forces in our lives that we may feel we have little control over, we most likely won’t have a lot of applicable tools with which to face these influences.  On the plus side, though the aspects between the transcendental planets that are being emphasized by this lunar transit will be in effect for a while, the immediate effect on our emotions and instinctive reactions is blessedly temporary.  We should also recognize that the feelings we experience as a result can give us clues to understanding this dynamic at work in the world at large, and that understanding is going to be necessary as we grapple with these forces in the long run.

Late tonight the Moon in Aries conjuncts Uranus, reviving the revolutionary fervor that has been an undercurrent in all of this clashing between great impersonal forces.  Our moods tonight become highly changeable, even agitated, and we long for the new and unusual to break the grip of the old and power-obsessed.  When the Moon is in hard aspect to Uranus, we should be mindful of the potential for technological breakdowns and short circuits, but there is also the potential for breakthroughs and increased inventiveness.  Our intuitions are highly attuned during this time, and our interest in and concern for the future is heightened.  And because this all is happening in Aries, our fighting spirit is likely to be revived, at least briefly, though Uranian electricity make find our energy fizzling out quickly after getting emotionally amped up so high.  Nonetheless, insomnia is a strong potential under this aspect, as we may find our hearts racing in the aftermath of facing three of the big powers of the solar system in short succession.  Our dreams tonight may be unusual, if we get to sleep at all.

Astrology Update, March 1st, 2017: Wild Ideas

Today got off to an early and potentially cranky start with the Moon in Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn this morning, amplifying the power of our emotional and instinctive responses and increasing the potential for control issues to take center stage.  Both Aries and Capricorn can be headstrong, and Aries in particular is not known for holding back on its hair-trigger temper, making any power struggles resulting from this aspect that much more explosive.  Pluto in Capricorn is all about transformative forces related to the powers-that-be, and the Moon in Aries has us instinctually focused on what serves our own identities and goals as individuals, so there was a strong likelihood of conflicts between individual desires and institutionally-enforced standards this morning.  Since the Moon governs the unconscious, of course, this would all be likely to play out in ways that people were not consciously aware of, adding to the potential frustration.

Unfortunately, this frustration probably didn’t ease up as the morning progressed.  Toward mid-day our emotions and instincts got a double-whammy from the Moon conjuncting Uranus in Aries and then within minutes opposing Jupiter in Libra, reinforcing the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition and its balancing act between individual and societal/relationship needs.  Moon/Uranus conjunctions tend to make us feel scattered and impulsive, even more so in already-impulsive Aries, and heighten our desire for freedom at all costs.  Libra on the other hand wants peace at all costs, even at the cost of being a doormat, and Jupiter in Libra adds the weight of authority to that desire.  After the Moon/Pluto square, chances are that we were already chafing under the weight of societal expectations and forces larger than ourselves, with that feeling dialed to the limit by the Moon/Uranus conjunction, so Jupiter could well have dumped kerosene on that particular fire.

And if we thought things couldn’t get more explosive, think again – this afternoon Mars just had to throw his hat in the ring, with the Moon conjuncting Mars and setting our already testy emotions on full-combat mode.  Our instinctive reactions are now aggressive, driven, and full of energy, ready to set the world ablaze in order to get what we want, which could just be payback against whatever restricting influence has us most riled up at the moment.  Unfortunately, as already noted, this morning’s restrictions were most likely of the authoritarian and institutional variety, so there may be more than a few David-and-Goliath scenarios playing out as I write.  Those of us finding ourselves in the midst of the inferno today need to take a deep breath and ask ourselves if this fight is something we really want, and if we’re ready and able to face the consequences once it’s underway.  If not, it’s time to take a step back and get our feelings in check, or better yet, find a more productive way to channel our anger and vent our frustrations.  Righteous anger can move mountains, but picking unwinnable fights may not be what is required, unless we’re well and truly backed into a corner with no other options, in which case, it may well be time to stand our ground, and Mars conjuncting the Moon will certainly give us the vigor to do just that.

This evening, that vigor continues in a more sobering fashion as the Moon trines Saturn, signaling that it’s time to get serious about what we feel, assess the limitations and restrictions that we are facing, and get ready to dig in for the long haul in terms of what we want and how we’re going to go about achieving it, particularly in relation to our beliefs and ideals and how we manifest them in the world at large.  This is a good time to take whatever today’s wildfires stirred up and temper our intentions, combining both passion and elbow grease to our goals.  Since this trine starts a void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, routine tasks are favored now, and while they may be unglamorous our Saturn-steadied emotions are now thoroughly up to these tasks, ready to grind through whatever needs to be done in service to our larger vision.

Of course, this happens just in time for that vision to face some potential clouding by the Sun conjuncting Neptune in Pisces, an aspect of potential confusion that began affecting our judgement yesterday and will continue into tomorrow.  On one hand, Neptune is concerned with spiritual matters and creativity, breaking down boundaries between us and encouraging unifying and imaginative experiences, which are now foremost in our consciousness thanks to this contact with the Sun.  On the other hand, Neptune can encourage us to get lost in fantasy, spinning fables to ourselves and others, whether based in wishful hyperbole, delusion, or outright deception.  Our desire to escape into such stories as well as drugs and alcohol could get us into a real pickle at this time, especially after this tension-filled day that may already have been worsened by this influence sending our tempers after entirely the wrong targets.  Now is a time to be careful in trying to understand our perceptions, not committing to promises (ours or others’) nor contracts for at least another couple of days.  We are likely to be wearing rose-coloured glasses tonight, and while that could well be a relief after the day’s frustrations, we should use them judiciously in favor of creative and spiritual pursuits, spending time with people we trust in pursuit of whatever form of escapism we can safely enjoy now, and not getting bogged down in elusive details that are likely to change shape in the clearer light of morning.

On the plus side, in the midst of all of this watery and bewitching Piscean dreamland, the Moon throws us a lifeline by entering practical and earthy Taurus, helping our emotions at least to get a firmer grip on what is real.  Since Taurus is the most materially-oriented of the signs, we are likely to be most interested in matters of material security at this time, and are also going to want to take things slow and steady.  Creature comforts are favored now – good food, good drink, and sensory pleasures, preferably without thinking too hard about all of that etherial Neptunian nonsense.  Of course, since Taurus and Pisces work harmoniously together, this Moon is not directly countering our Neptunian fantasies, just giving us something to ground ourselves with on an instinctual level.  Be prepared to want more sleep than usual (good time for Neptune-inspired dreaming!) and have trouble sticking to diets.  Rather than fighting our desire to retreat into comfort food, if we can find a way to take pleasure in eating and doing what is healthy for us we can make the most of this time and use it to stay grounded while our conscious minds expand their limits and our imaginations run wild.

Astrology of February 2nd, 2017: Big Talk

The majority of today’s astrological activity happens in the morning, starting off before sunrise as the Moon in Aries conjuncted Uranus in Aries, creating a fair degree of emotional and instinctual restlessness to unsettle us and either get us out of bed early or keep the night owls among us from getting to bed at all.  At the very least, we are likely to have tumultuous dreams…

This is followed by the Moon in Aries squaring Mercury in Capricorn, channeling that agitation into potential aggravation, as our bold and individualistic instincts bump up against our more practical mindsets and blunt communication.  There are likely to be a lot of grumpy bears succumbing to road rage this morning, so please be extra mindful if you are traveling, and it might be good to wait a bit before negotiating or signing any legal contracts.  Especially since the Moon in Aries opposes Jupiter a few minutes after squaring Mercury, and the two aspects combined may well prove to be enough to turn our luck against us this morning.

Even more so since the big astrological news of the day is Mercury squaring Jupiter about an hour later.  We’ve already been feeling the buildup to this over the past 24 hours and will feel the residual effects tomorrow as well.  Braggadocio is likely to be a problem today, as well as hyperbole and promising the Moon.  We would do well to be as aware as possible of Jupiter’s expansiveness and faith being at odds with our thoughts and communication, as the cognitive bombardment could be quite distracting and even disruptive, especially if we are not fully conscious of what is going on.  We may also experience communication in service to the status quo and authority that runs afoul of social responsibility and goodwill, as well as potentially difficult legal developments.  Whole lot of foot-in-mouth disease going around, and in the hair-trigger-tempered environment of the Aries Moon, our words could blow up in our faces with precious little warning.

For once, it’s actually Saturn saving the day as the Moon in Aries trines Saturn in Sagittarius toward mid-day.  Now we get Saturn’s stabilizing force asserting some needed boundaries in the midst of all of this over-the-top talk, and our emotions and instincts get some much-needed from our capacity for discipline and perseverance.  We may find ourselves in a much better position to go the extra mile as a result, while simultaneously dialing back our knee-jerk reactions at least enough to get things done.

That said, whatever we do get done had best be within the realm of daily routine and not starting anything new, as the Moon/Saturn trine starts a void-of-course period that lasts throughout the afternoon and into the evening.  This is, however, a great time for correcting errors, organizing our environments, ferreting out problems, and resolving discrepancies.  It’s not likely to be a good time for sharp and detailed thinking, though it may be a good time for activities requiring a good understanding of the bigger picture, emphasized by the Mercury/Jupiter square, even if that emphasis is a bit uncomfortable.

Speaking of discomfort, the Moon enters Taurus tonight and that is sure to send many of us in search of creature comforts to ease any distress resulting from today’s astrological activity.  We may also find ourselves moving more slowly, and with more of a concern for practicality in our reactions.  Those of us on diets need to be sure to find ways to make them pleasurable tonight or risk abruptly falling off of them, as Taurus is ruled by Venus and isn’t likely to be keen on self-deprivation right now, especially in the wake of so many emotionally and mentally challenging aspects today.  This is a good time to take time for self-care, enjoyment of good food, good company, and good art.  Taurus wants the finer things in life, and our instincts are likely to seek these out tonight, in whatever form is most enjoyable and easily obtained.

Of course, while the Taurean Bull doesn’t much like moving and would most likely rather enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation tonight, the Bull also is an unstoppable force when riled up, and given the amount of poking our emotions and instincts have endured today, we might find that instead of enjoying a nice quiet evening our inner Bull will go after the picadores and then the matador with a vengeance.  Especially if it’s a part of our karmic path to do so, as the Moon ends the day trining the North Node, creating a flow state between our instinctive reactions and the direction of our life’s purpose.  Taurus may be resistant to change, but once started is slow to stop, so if we’re already wound up we may take a while to settle down.  Once we do, however, we are likely to move ever more steadily toward our goals, even if tonight’s goals are all about getting some quality sleep before the next battle.  😉
