Astrology Update, New Moon in Capricorn, January 16th, 2018: Why So Serious?

New Moons are a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned, working together in harmony, giving us a great opportunity to go within and understand ourselves and what we truly want, and then plant seeds of intention accordingly.  With all planets now moving direct and no retrogrades until Jupiter’s retrograde in early March, the seeds that we plant now are especially favored to yield real results, particularly if we are patient and mindful of where our goals fit within the larger plan.

This New Moon occurs at 26 degrees Capricorn, a sign known for its patience and determination, and with Capricorn’s ruler Saturn in this sign along with Pluto, Venus, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith, there is a powerful emphasis on all things Saturnine, including age, time, process, karma, rules, responsibility, limitations, and structure.  There are consequences to the seeds we sow now, and what we grow will take time and patience to cultivate.  Now is a good time to seek the advice of a wise elder, to respect earth-based traditions, tend to our bodies and our bones in particular, and reconnect with the natural world as best we can despite potentially daunting winter weather.

Jupiter in Scorpio sextile to Pluto in Capricorn at this time is part of a repeating pattern for much of 2018, expanding our possibilities for transformation and lending faith and optimism to the process, which are much-needed when facing some of the darker institutional and societal secrets that are being dredged up during Pluto’s Capricorn transit, as well as personal traumas for those of us with planets and luminaries touched by this transit.  This sextile can help us to be real powerhouses in whatever areas of our natal and progressed charts are touched by Scorpio and Capricorn, but it can also amp up the intensity of our experiences there, though being a supportive aspect it is unlikely to yield any dire Plutonian fallout in and of itself.  Since this New Moon, Sun, and Venus in Capricorn sextile Chiron in Pisces, which is also trined by Mars in Scorpio, what hurts are dredged up under Pluto’s influence can yield potent lessons that increase our healing wisdom, compassion, and sense of universal connection, and we are most likely to gain revelations regarding wounds incurred in relation to desire and intimacy.

Mars in Scorpio inconjunct Uranus in Aries during this New Moon makes for sudden surprises that can be jarring to our energy and drive, and with Mars still in orb to its recent conjunction with Jupiter, Mars in Scoprio’s intense focus and motivation continues to be a force to be reckoned with.  This is a time to enlist extra Capricornian caution when driving or engaged in other undertakings in which an accident could have fatal consequences, especially since with both Uranus and Mars in signs that Mars rules, we may find ourselves so focused on our goals that we fail to see potential dangers, or do not give them the respect they deserve.  Since this inconjunct is part of a Learning Triangle with the Sun, Moon, and Venus unexpected lessons are emphasized here, particularly those that call into question our desires and what we do to attain them, with both our conscious and unconscious selves poised to make use of whatever wisdom we may gain from these experiences.  Mars gains the benefit of the sextile to the Sun and Moon in this configuration, making us conscious of our focus and drive while feeling intuitively aligned with that awareness.  But this New Moon and Venus are squaring Uranus, making us equally aware of how tenuous our position is right now.  This is an unsettling aspect, to be sure, and we may find our moods and affections flip-flopping as a result or unusually self-indulgent, sending us in pursuit of newness and excitement with potential frustration and flaring tempers when we find our our desires thwarted.

The Sun, Moon, and Venus all in the last decanate of Capricorn emphasize patient ambition in pursuit of our desires, and Saturn, Mercury, and Black Moon Lilith all in the first decanate of Capricorn emphasize patience and persistence even more, with a methodical outlook that transcends temporary fads and is not impressed by Moon/Venus-square-Uranus impulsiveness.  But Uranus in Aries is the height of impatience, eager to start endeavors yet often hard-pressed to keep up the momentum necessary to continue, and we may find ourselves tripping over sudden changes in our feelings and emotional attention-span.  Therefore, whatever seeds of intention we decide to plant at this New Moon, we need to recognize that the dogpile of planets in Capricorn may still give us all of the patience and determination in the world despite whatever emotional surprises the Uranian square may cook up, but they also make it likely that what we choose to pursue now will require much time and tenacity to see to the end, with all-too-many obstacles to test us along the way.

Mercury conjuncts Black Moon Lilith in the first decanate of Capricorn during this New Moon, putting our thoughts and communication in alignment with divine will and giving us a certain degree of emotional distance in our thinking.  Lilith can force us to confront our desires by tempting us with what we cannot attain until we have gained a certain degree of emotional maturity, often learning some very difficult lessons in the process.  There is also a Uranian tone to Lilith’s insights, a primal and electric intuition that is both independent and impersonal, helping us to be more objective about our feelings.  Mercury is also still conjunct Saturn at this time, so our thoughts continue to have a certain gravitas to steady the Uranian influence, and in combination with Black Moon Lilith can create a powerful sense of fatefulness in our ideas and communication now.  Mercury in Capricorn carefully brings together all of the facts to bear upon a subject before arriving at any conclusion, creating an impression of slow thoughtfulness that can be mistaken for a lack of mental dexterity, yet in fact Mercury in Capricorn’s methodical thought-process repeatedly yields the right answer.  If we need to carefully think through all aspects of a plan before making any decision, and do so with mindfulness of the long-term consequences of whatever decision we will make, this Mercury transit is the time to do it.  There is the potential for the Saturn/Mercury/Black Moon Lilith conjunction to yield a somewhat bleak and depressive outlook if we let Saturn’s influence become more weight than motivator, so sensitive souls would do well to remember that and keep a sense of humor on-hand to balance out such a hefty dose of Saturnine seriousness.

Astrology Update, April 23rd, 2017: Emotional Bruising

This morning began with Mars in Gemini squaring the North Node, making this a day when our soul’s path is challenged by our ever-changing and curious energies.  We may find that today our ambition and drive is more exploratory than willing to dedicate itself to the details of whatever process will further our growth most.  We may find that the things we want to learn require more energy than we are able to expend right now, that the next steps in our progression will take more time than anticipated, and we have to find a way to come to a compromise between what we want and what we need.  Or we may start early with an abundance of energy and discover partway through that our plans were too ambitious, and we’ve exhausted ourselves before we can consider ourselves even close to done.  We may find ourselves bumping up against countless small frustrations and have to battle our own tempers to get through the day.  Whatever forms the challenges of this aspect take, this is the kind of testing that can strengthen our resolve and hone our skills in unanticipated ways, well worth working through despite any temporary pitfalls.

Toward midday the Moon in Pisces conjuncted Chiron in Pisces, increasing our emotional and instinctive responses to old wounds and sensitivities.  Our limitations may loom large in our feelings now, and we may feel a sense of inevitability and helplessness in the face of our own shortcomings.  We are likely to be instinctively drawn to situations or people who bring up these issues in us, but also have a greater capacity to work through these issues with the help of trusted friends and loved ones now.  Or we may find ourselves being the voice of wisdom and reassurance for others who are undergoing struggles that resonate with our own, as our weaknesses are revealed to be not merely personal but in fact universal.

Whatever encouragement we may gain from connecting with others over mutual hurts will be needed as we move into the afternoon, when the Moon in Pisces squares Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, and our emotions may turn colder, our fears loom larger, and our limitations seem more insurmountable.  This aspect can be deeply depressive, or simply restrictive, binding us to the demands of time and realism when we would much rather enjoy a kinder sense of connection with the Universe.  We may feel our mortality more now, or the troubles of the world at large, and now is a time when our more sympathetic feelings can turn against us, making it harder to endure the less charitable attitudes we may encounter from society, potentially leading to a deep sense of isolation during this time.

Thankfully, a short while later the Moon conjuncted Venus in Pisces, and the coldness and isolation had a chance to be relieved by the sweetness of sympathetic connection.  Our affections were gently stirred by this aspect, and we were likely to take refuge from Saturnine coldness in pleasurable fantasies and perhaps a bit of sensual indulgence.  Our love of beauty and art may have been stimulated during this time, our emotional yearnings seeking sensory reinforcement with spiritual overtones.  Of course, after enduring the heightened sense of our own frailty gripped in the hand of fate during the last two aspects, we may have been inclined to go a bit overboard with self-indulgence during this time, but it’s just as likely that we were happy to share that indulgence if given half a chance, unless the combined forces of the Moon/Chiron conjunction and Moon/Saturn square proved too much to bear in the company of others, in which case a little introverted self-care could hardly be begrudged.  Since this aspect began a void-of-course period lasting a few hours, this could be the perfect time to retreat into quiet contemplation of all that has happened during this Pisces transit, letting go of the hurts that can no longer instruct us while taking the necessary steps to soothe our hearts and reconnect with the more loving side of the Universe.

Tonight the Moon enters Aries, moving our feelings out of the soft and tender realm of Pisces into a bolder and more adventurous space.  The Moon in Aries starts the circle of the zodiac anew, taking the leap of faith off the cliff and into a heightened sense of wonder and possibility.  Our emotions and instincts are more passionate now, more demanding, more attuned to our own wants and needs and not shy about meeting them.  We are more emotionally aggressive, potentially more quarrelsome at times as well but unlikely to hold a grudge even if tempers do flare, as there is too much to see and do in the world to waste time on hard feelings.  Our moods may turn on a dime accordingly, and we are not likely to sustain any one feeling for long during this transit.

That sense of quickness and chasing after new experiences is heightened later tonight as the Moon in Aries sextiles its ruler Mars in Gemini, increasing our feelings of adventurousness with a questing and inquisitive energy that urges us to try everything.  We may experience a sense of recklessness and our attitudes are likely to be more devil-may-care.  Thankfully the sextile is a harmonious aspect, but there is still the potential to go a little overboard in our zeal as we seek out the situations and experiences that are the proving grounds for our fighting spirit.  Chances are that there will be more than a little sociable sparring going on tonight, as our egos jockey for position in whatever arena our hearts favor, but given the supportive nature of the sextile, it is more likely to be in fun than fighting in earnest, with little damage that can’t heal by morning.

Astrology Update, March 27th, 2017: New Moon in Aries

This morning started off early with the Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius and turning void-of-course, which can make for a dreary and frustrating way to start the day, not to mention a stereotypical Monday morning.  The Moon in hard aspect to Saturn tends to dredge up our fears and insecurities, leading to depression and even despair, or at the very least a sort of numbing sense of restriction.  Combined with the aimlessness of the void-of-course period, this made for a morning where the best course of action was sticking to our routines and not getting caught up in any bold new plans until the morning had progressed a few more hours.

Thankfully, later this morning the Moon entered Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a fresh new start, as Aries is energetic and action-oriented.  Our instincts during this lunar transit are brave and excited about life, interested in exploring new possibilities and treating life as one big adventure.  Though our tempers are a little shorter under an Aries Moon, so are our attention spans, so we aren’t likely to stay mad for long.  We’re also likely to be more straightforward during this time, more impatient and wanting to cut to the chase.  While we aren’t likely to lose all of the altruism fostered under the Pisces Moon, still we are more self-concerned and self-motivated now, seeking to make our mark on the world.  Personal ambitions are highlighted now, as is self-image.  Since Aries is ruled by Mars, physical activity is of greater interest as well – this is a good time to get out and enjoy the spring weather!

Speaking of Mars, the red planet is a player in one of the big astrological events of the day, with Mars in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces.  This puts our energy and drive that is currently operating on practical, material levels in a harmonious relationship with our hopes, dreams, ideals, and spiritual outlook.  This is a time for acting from a place of compassion without losing sight of our own self-interest, and being able to see the bigger picture even while we are engaged in very mundane and physical activities.  This is also a good time for enjoying sensory experience, and for relationships that are both sexual and spiritual, erotic and romantic.  Those of us engaged in esoteric studies are more likely to make good progress now, and those with more pragmatic outlooks may find the view improved by an unexpectedly rosy tint to the day.

To add to that rosiness, the Moon in Aries conjuncts Venus retrograde in Aries this afternoon.  Though Venus retrograde is less certain in her lust for life than when she is direct, still she is active and engaging, warm and affectionate, instinctively desiring companionship but still nobody’s pushover, and our emotions are now following her lead.  This is a time of new crushes and lively flirtation, and perhaps a bit more aggressive pursuit of who and what we desire.  If we’ve been hesitant before about such pursuit, now may be the time that we finally work up the guts to go for it, especially with the Mars/Neptune sextile adding both romantic and practical fuel to our fire.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trines Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, encouraging us to just surrender to the experiences of the day, though since this trine is in fiery signs, that surrender isn’t likely to be passive!  Rather, we may find ourselves happily swept along in a rush of fiery action, spirited and fervent and maybe a little breathless.  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on the unconscious level, so we may not even be aware of this dynamic, only later realizing that we’ve been riding a flame wave that may well have burned through more than a few inhibitions.  Black Moon Lilith is not a tame force by any stretch of the imagination, and following on the heels of the Moon/Venus conjunction and the Mars/Neptune sextile amplifies the erotic charge running through the air this afternoon and into the evening.  If indeed we did take advantage of the impetus from that Moon/Venus conjunction in pursuit of our desires, this Moon trine Black Moon Lilith may take the reins off unexpectedly.  Careful what you wish for…

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries plays out against this backdrop, along with the slowly tightening Jupiter/Pluto square that is currently under less than 1 degree of exactitude and will be exact by the end of this month.  The New Moon is a time for setting intentions to be grown through the lunar cycle, reaching fullness at the Full Moon and then being disseminated into the world as the Moon wanes.  At the New Moon the Moon conjuncts the Sun in the sky, no longer reflecting the Sun’s light but instead bringing unconsciousness and consciousness to work together, with our conscious intentions incubating in the darkness of the unconscious.  Against the backdrop noted above, the drive of both Moon and Sun in fiery Aries is great initiatory power, good for intentions regarding start-ups and bold new changes in our lives, but there is the potential for things to go a little wild in the process.  The encroaching power of the Jupiter/Pluto square reminds us that whatever we are planning is likely to have to contend with the ongoing conflict in our society between the desire for social harmony and the consolidation of power by wealthy and often hidden forces.  Faith and optimism versus greed and corruption.  Socio-political chickens coming home to roost.  No matter how personal our goals now, they are likely to become political, as the American Dream of shaping one’s own destiny is revealed to have been built on a legacy of oppression and lies, and the fable of democracy here drags down others with it abroad.

In addition, Venus retrograde’s reassessment of interpersonal interactions is happening in a sign that is impulsive and not always mindful of consequences, while the Jupiter/Pluto square is brimful with consequences, and since Venus is currently inconjunct the North Node in Virgo, there is a further disconnect between what we desire and the lessons needed by our souls.  On the plus side, Mercury in Aries is moving into a trine with Saturn in Sagittarius (exact in another couple days), so our minds are gaining the strength that comes with recognizing our limitations and the restrictions of reality, and applying Saturnine discipline to overcome obstacles.  This is a strength that we are going to need to set our intentions with this New Moon and make them stick.  This trine also resonates with a wider trine between Saturn and Uranus/Eris, so that our discipline is well aware of the Uranian rebellion and agitation that has been in and out of conflict with both Pluto and Jupiter in recent years, and we have the capacity to calmly work in alignment with the socio-political changes fomenting around us.

Since the ruler of this New Moon is Mars, currently in Taurus in a harmonious sextile with Neptune in Pisces, there is also some chance for our ideals to positively influence our practical efforts in connection with our New Moon intentions.  With Ceres in Taurus as well in a loose trine with Pluto in Capricorn, we should be mindful of how our intentions may nurture and nourish us, quite possibly on a very practical level.  Though the alignments of this New Moon do not create any notable configurations, nonetheless there is an interesting overall dynamic at work here, of balancing what we want versus what the surrounding reality is shaping, and keeping some measure of hope and idealism and even romanticism alive even as reality seems more and more grim.  Aries is a sign whose efforts can seem like a flash in the pan with its eagerness and impulsiveness, but against the backdrop of ongoing transcendental and generational drama and with Aries’ ruler Mars active in fixed Taurus via the Mars/Neptune sextile, there is the potential for a lot more staying power to the intentions we set now than is apparent at first blush.

Astrology Update, February 28th, 2017: Brilliant Affection

After the astrological hoopla of the past few days, today is kind enough to give us one aspect only:  The Moon conjuncts Venus in Aries tonight, bringing a pleasurable touch to the end of a day that is likely to have seen us eager to explore our possibilities and make a name for ourselves in the process.  While the conjunction is a hard aspect, Venus is the lesser benefic of the zodiac, a kindly if self-indulgent influence, bringing additional warmth and affection to a bold and enthusiastic Aries Moon.  Our emotions and instincts at this time are impulsive, our pleasures found in action and bravery.  Physical activity is favored at this time, whether for sport or exercise or just plain fun.  Our instincts will make the difference in any form of competition, the friendlier the better with Venus involved, though friendly is not likely to mean delicate – Venus in Aries is a warrior woman, after all.  But Venus is still a lover, even if her current Aries placement has her feeling as though the bedroom is just another arena.  Conjuncting the Moon, she is passionate, making us more honest than usual with our emotions and reactions, albeit potentially more fickle as well.  Fickle or not, this Moon/Venus combination can be brilliant, and we would do well to enjoy it.

Astrology of January 31st, 2017: Courage and Decisiveness

The day starts immediately with the Moon in Pisces conjunct Chiron shortly after the witching hour, heightening our sensitivity to our hurts and limitations, whether physical or otherwise.  If we weren’t in bed yet at that time, chances are that we would feel the need for rest and healing strongly at that point, but that awareness of hurt might well keep us awake longer, as Chiron seeks to instruct us through what we are feeling.

A few hours later the Moon squares Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially leading to a depressive early morning, as the challenge from Saturn to our emotions is one of making us feel our limitations and fears and insecurities keenly right now, and following on the heels of the Moon/Chiron conjunction it might be a little rough to take.  On the other hand, we may well find ourselves struggling to feel at that point, as Saturn’s restriction can deaden feelings, especially those already stretched thin and exhausted by the past week of turmoil in the larger world, and the difficulty in maintaining empathy when it seems that battle lines are being drawn between “us” and “them.”

Thankfully, the Moon conjuncts Venus in Pisces later in the morning, and our feelings and instincts become aligned with our affections and pleasures.  We become aware of the sweetness of who and what we value, take comfort in our emotional, physical, and social connections, our sense of the universal and the humanity that brings us together and regenerates the sympathy and empathy between us.

This begins a void-of-course period lasting a few hours, during which the Moon trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, keeping our emotions and instincts attuned to and in harmony with the rejected and marginalized in ourselves and our society.  This mid-day and early afternoon period is a time when we will strongly identify with the underdog on an unconscious level, which is also a collective level.  There is also an instinctual awareness of secrets, and we are likely to be good at obscuring what we feel at this time, even as we sense hidden things under the surface that intensify our own feelings and that of those with whom we are connected.

The Moon enters Aries this afternoon, and the feelings and instincts that were so quiet and sensitive now get an influx of fire.  That secretive and secret-sensing unconscious now wants to get straight to the truth of things, boldly and without hesitation, and is likely to step on some toes in the process.  This is a time to exercise our bravery, to quest for answers and battle monsters along the way, and decisively create solutions in the parts of our lives most in need of them.  And the Universe is going to be kind enough to give us the energy and drive to do it, with Mars conjuncting the Moon in Aries this evening.  All of that fire that has set our hearts ablaze has the classical ruler of Aries, Mars directing it, channeling that spirit and focusing our instincts straight toward whatever demons we need to fight as a result of the introspection of the day.

Close on the heels of Mars charging forward tonight is Mercury in Capricorn squaring Uranus in Aries.  Our words that seek to be the voice of deep and reasoned thought in pursuit of our goals run afoul of the Great Rebel, the urge toward newness and upheaval, challenging and even tearing down the old in service to the future.  We may find ourselves speaking before we have fully thought things through, or our words may prove to be far more disruptive than we intended.  Our minds may run at a million miles a minute, our attention spans grow smaller, our focused energy and emotion racing to keep up with the pace set by changing circumstances.  We may see unusual trading activity starting this afternoon as a precursor to the exact square this evening, as even the swift Mercury’s contact lasts longer than that of the Moon, and will be felt into tomorrow.  Remember that in addition to governing communication and thought, Mercury is also a god of commerce and financial gain, and luck.  Mercury conjuncting Uranus has our luck turning on a dime, so we need to be prepared for wherever our Moon/Mars conjunction boldness leads us to put up some surprises of its own, and use those Aries instincts and energy decisively.
