Astrology Update, March 22nd, 2017: Trying Changes

Today’s lunar activity started out with the Moon in Capricorn squaring Jupiter in Libra in the wee early morning hours.  While the Moon in Capricorn is distinctly aware of social hierarchies, it lacks the diplomacy and tact of Libra, and tends toward a more serious and even depressive mood, whereas Jupiter in Libra is very much about optimism and faith and an expansive viewpoint regarding social dynamics and interpersonal relationships.  Capricorn is focused and driven, and notoriously workaholic, whereas Libra delights in fun and social gatherings.  Capricorn is devoted, whereas Libra is ambivalent.  Libra is talkative, while Capricorn is reticent.  Thus, when these two square off, we may find ourselves confronted with a new iteration of the ongoing lessons of the past few months in the fulfillment of personal versus social needs, with the quiet dedication of Capricorn standing in for the personal side of the equation in place of zany Uranus.  The Moon in Capricorn may be quiet, but is deeply fervent, and mistrusts the social butterfly qualities of Jupiter in Libra.  For those of us who were awake shortly after midnight on the West Coast of North and South America, we may have found ourselves in unexpected disagreements with others, most likely in relation to one person wanting more social and interpersonal contact and another wanting less contact or more in-depth contact.  This also ties in with the ongoing introspection of Venus retrograde regarding relationships and interpersonal connections.  For those who slept through this particular uncomfortable life lesson, count yourselves lucky, but note whatever you may have dreamt during that time, as the Moon governs unconscious wisdom.

The Moon in Capricorn found itself further mediating in the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition when it squared Uranus in Aries several hours later, turning the tables on our emotions and making our morning hours a bit more frenetic than we are used to.  Sudden upsets and the potential for accidents were elevated this morning, and our sense of responsibility may have been confounded by frustrations with the limitations in our lives, especially in relation to our careers and reputations, and we may have felt a temptation to shake things up.  Since this is a challenging aspect, however, any shake up is not likely to happen quietly or easily.  Aries is decidedly self-determined, brash, courageous, even foolhardy.  Capricorn has its own manner of courage but calculates risks and proceeds with a caution that Aries finds painfully slow.  This morning is likely to be a morning of impatience and frustration, sudden stops and starts, and unsettled feelings that continue to linger as the day progresses.  Since this aspect starts a long void-of-course period, it is not likely to find any resolution during the hours following either.  When the Moon makes its last major aspect of the day and turns void-of-course, we may find ourselves unfocused and adrift, and with the reverberations from the Moon/Uranus square agitating us, we can continue to find our plans interrupted and our emotions uncertain.  Normally sticking to routine is the best way of dealing with the void-of-course energies, but that Uranian energy may have other plans.  Since Uranus in Aries steers us toward the kind of bold, new ventures that are absolutely the worst things to try during a void-of-course time, this could be an especially uncomfortable afternoon.  Small course corrections are a better way to go now rather than making any big leaps, as well as taking disruptions in stride and continually working our way back to our routines.

A gentle sextile from the Moon to Chiron toward mid-day may be helping to smooth the course during this time, keeping us conscious of the places where we are sensitive or feel less than adequate at tackling the tasks presented to us, and helping us to find ways around or through them, particularly when doing so can help us aid others with similar issues.  This is a time to apply some extra compassion and remember the merits of camaraderie in the midst of struggle.  It can also help us to be more aware of the causes and patterns of such difficulties in our lives and how they affect us in our work and social structures.

Tonight the Moon enters Aquarius, turning our emotions and instincts from the personal dedication of Capricorn toward a path of applying that personal growth to the larger social order.  The newness and disruption that Uranus sent our way earlier today may well have been clearing the path for our feelings to now operate in a more forward-thinking manner, as Uranus is the transcendental ruler of Aquarius.  Aquarius is an air sign, so this Moon is not a touchy-feely or overtly emotional one, but is more philosophical and exploratory, friendly for the sake of increasing understanding and contributing to the betterment of society.  This is a sign that finds it easier to love many people rather than just one, and connects more over ideas than feelings.  Since this is a fixed sign, we may find ourselves and others being more stubborn now, more dogmatic about the ideas near and dear to us, though simultaneously more interested in hearing about other ideas even if we’re not ready to adopt them just yet.  This is a great time for communication, and social gatherings that contribute to causes, activities that change the world for the better, but it’s also a great time for reading and self-improvement, keeping in mind that personal evolution feeds the evolution of the whole.  We are more idealistic during this time, more interested in what the future holds and how we can shape it, so now is a good time to take a more active stand on what matters to us.

Astrology Update, March 21st, 2017: Instinctive Dedication

The day started with a trine from the Moon in Capricorn to Mars in Taurus in the wee hours of the morning, lending strength to our unconscious, and drive to our emotions and instincts.  Those of us sleeping at that hour may have found ourselves dreaming of practical and sensory matters, but those of us awake and working then were likely to get an extra boost of energy that may have kept us going long past the hour at which we normally retire, and those whose days start before the cock crows may have found themselves awake and moving about even earlier than usual.

Later this morning the Moon in Capricorn sextiled dreamy Neptune in Pisces, lending a practical bent to our daydreams and giving a rosy glow to our goals.  Our planning ability may still be benefitting from increased intuitive ability along with our instincts, as our unconscious understanding of real world demands meets the universal, the spiritual, and the ideal.  These are forces that normally might seem difficult to integrate, so now is a good time to work with paradox and contradictions, combining out-of-the-box insights with the determination that sees results in the material world.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Capricorn squares Mercury in Aries, putting that determination and sense of responsibility at odds with our thoughts and communication, which are likely to be frustrated by the steady pace and caution of the Capricorn Moon, longing for new vistas to stimulate ideas and seeking new conversations.  Mercury in Aries speaks brashly, and is not likely to respect the social hierarchy that Capricorn values, potentially leading to some awkward conversations between young and old.  We may find ourselves digging our heels in the dirt when confronted with ideas or proposals that challenge our plans or our most cherished notions of the status quo, and may find our feelings ruffled in the process, especially when we perceive what others are communicating as selfish demands.  Or, we may wind up lashing out at feelings of restriction and responsibility, wanting our own needs to be valued as much as whatever has us feeling duty-bound.  Though this may be a time of frustration, it can also be a time to challenge our own programmed responses, both those that keep us bound up in social expectations and the responsibilities that we have taken on that may not truly be ours, and those that have us speaking before thinking or oblivious to how our thoughts and speech affect both ourselves and others beyond the fulfillment of our immediate desires.  With some effort ad adjustment, our new ideas can work within a more long-term framework and our emotions can benefit from taking off the blinders and doing a bit more exploring rather than just grinding through our ambitions.

Late tonight the Moon in Capricorn conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn, bringing our emotions and instincts into direct contact with the transformational forces in our lives that may leave us feeling overwhelmed and out of control.  Our feelings are likely to intensify during this time, and we may find ourselves caught up in power struggles with those we are closest to.  We may find ourselves gripped by possessiveness or jealousy, or even an obsession that we can’t seem to shake.  Our deepest emotions come to the surface now, in all of their complexity, and while this might make for a night of revelations that can teach us much, still we should not assume that everything we feel now is the be-all-end-all of the matter.  We may be drawn to extreme experiences, even dangerous people and situations, and need to recognize that though we are pulled to the edge now this is still only a temporary transit that we should not allow to define ourselves in the long term.  This too shall pass.

Astrology Update, March 20th, 2017: Spring Equinox

A Blessed Equinox to you all!  The Sun entered Aries this morning, making this the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  Aries is considered the youngest sign of the zodiac, the sign of newness and wonder and adventure, the sign of both the archetypal fool and hero.  The Sun in Aries brings with it a bolder attitude and a desire to make one’s mark on the world.  As the sap quickens in the trees in spring, so too does our blood quicken and stir us to action, to match the lengthening light with more liveliness and enthusiasm of our own.  We are likely to be more focused now, more driven and ambitious, and far less likely to give up on what matters to us.  With that drive and ambition may also come more aggression, and our tempers are likely to be shorter, but thankfully anger at this time isn’t just quick to flare – it’s also quick to die out, as there are newer and better things on the horizon to catch our interest, and grudges don’t last under this influence.  How can they when we are waking up with the world around us, coming alive after winter’s sleep?  This is a great time to focus on physical fitness, self-improvement, new projects, and getting outside for a breath of spring air.

Of course, the Moon in Sagittarius just had to conjunct Saturn right after the Sun entered Aries early this morning, so those of us awake at that hour probably were feeling more grumpy than enthusiastic, as Saturn in hard aspect with the Moon tends to turn our emotions serious and even depressive, and at that hour especially is either reminding us of all that we have to get done in the morning or making us want to roll over and get a few more hours of sleep.  Since that aspect started a void-of-course period for a few hours, chances are that we weren’t feeling our sharpest either, so sticking to routine was the best fallback position this morning, at least in the early morning hours.

Later this morning the Moon entered Capricorn, turning our emotions and instincts toward more practical matters, and giving us a greater degree of steadfastness and drive.  Capricorn is a sign known for its dedication and determination, and with the Moon in this sign we can seem more stoic and aloof while simultaneously being more devoted to whatever goal we have set our hearts on, even to the point of fanaticism.  We feel a greater sense of seriousness and responsibility during this transit, as Capricorn’s ruler is Saturn, the Lord of Karma who foreshadowed this transit with that conjunction earlier this morning, and who eternally reminds us of our limitations and insecurities, not simply to be a downer but rather to inspire in us the self-discipline to push through our fears and whatever obstacles we may face.  Capricorn is known for patience and perseverance, and with the Moon in this sign we may feel like we are facing mountains but will be thoroughly ready to climb them for as long as it takes to reach the top.

That patience was tested right out of the gate as within a few minutes of entering Capricorn the Moon squared the Sun in Aries, increasing our frustration and impatience and likely setting tempers flaring.  This Last Quarter Moon is a time of breaking down the final barriers in releasing the intentions we set at the New Moon and brought into bloom at the Full Moon, and sets the stage for us to fully let go of that which no longer serves us as we prepare to go into the darkness of the New Moon and plant new seeds in the psychic soil.  Our consciousness in Aries and our unconsciousness in Capricorn clash only in method, not in drive.  The Ram and the Goat are both creatures with horns, after all, equally stubborn.  If we can recognize that sense of kinship between our desires and see that there is a time and place for both our patience and our time to run wild, then this aspect can prepare us to become a truly unstoppable force.

That force may be well-utilized this afternoon as the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing our dedication to bear on the goals most crucial on our karmic path, and drawing to us the experiences we need to fulfill our souls’ deepest needs.  While the Sun in Aries may be calling us to behave more brashly, still our patient and responsible instincts are aligning with our souls’ purpose and giving us the persistence to work through all of the little details necessary to our growth.  This is a time to improve our health, learn new skills or hone old ones, and perfect our process.  We are not likely to tolerate half-measures now, and will focus on getting things right, for however long it takes.  Work that requires attention to detail is favored now, particularly scientific work, teaching, writing and communication, and gardening or landscaping.

Very late tonight the Moon in Capricorn squares Venus retrograde in Aries, setting our steady and responsible instincts and emotions against an already uncertain and frustrated sense of connection.  Venus in Aries wants to take an active role in interacting with others, but in retrograde finds herself reassessing how we are connect with each other, what we take pleasure in, and whether our affections are really true to who we are and what we really desire, and so there is a hesitancy or restlessness and even discontent with our ability to be with others and enjoy ourselves together now.  That hesitancy is exacerbated by the Capricorn Moon, which is reserved and not terribly good at giving the attention and feedback that the Aries Venus is craving.  The Capricorn Moon is serious while the Aries Venus wants fun but isn’t sure she knows how to get it.  This is all one big recipe for frustration and the potential for hurt feelings is high.  That said, the challenges presented by this aspect can be useful in reminding us that sometimes we need to get out of our shells a bit more, and at the same time what we really want may not be something that will come to us immediately.  Human emotion and interaction can be complicated, and both of these signs want to make it simple.  Yet real affection and connection isn’t just a flash in the pan and takes time to cultivate, and sometimes we need to look past our own desires to really see and understand the people around us and learn what it is that draws us to them and brings their affection to us in return.

Astrological Update, February 22nd, 2017: Chins Up!

It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

The big astrological aspect of the day also started things off very early out of the gate, with Mars in Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning.  This is a rough start to the day, and the tone this challenge sets will linger into tomorrow as well.  Mars is all about drive, focus, energy, aggression, and the masculine sexual principle, and he’s in one of the two signs that he rules so he’s in his place of power.  But power is what Pluto is all about, power and control, will, transformation, loss, endings, and death.  Pluto also governs institutions, such as governments, police, hospitals, and organized crime.  And with Pluto in Capricorn, his themes are playing out in relation to our careers, reputation, and standing within the social order, whereas Mars’ themes are playing out in relation to our identity and sense of self.  You can see where this is going.  This is a power struggle between our desire for self-determination and the giant institutional forces that seem beyond our control.  The cold and impersonal will of a transcendental planet that moves slowly and influences the course of generations and countries versus the individual drive of a personal planet known for its rage and destruction (Mars is the god of war, after all).  On the personal level we are likely to experience frustration, interpersonal conflicts, and explosive temperaments.  We may feel thwarted at every turn by impersonal forces disrupting our plans.  We are at increased risk for accidents, especially because Mars in Aries is impatient and hasty, so it pays to be extra mindful today.  On the societal level, there is an increased potential for violence, police and military conflicts, posturing by would-be strongmen, and breakdowns in diplomacy.  How this plays out through the day is likely to be influenced by the various aspects made by the Moon over the course of the day, as this day is profoundly cardinal in its energy, with the majority of aspects involving planets in the cardinal signs of Aries, Libra, and Capricorn.

The first lunar aspect of today is that of the Moon in Capricorn conjuncting Pluto in Capricorn, happening around mid-day/early afternoon and aligning our emotions and instincts with the great impersonal forces of our lives.  Since Pluto is like all transcendental planets in that he transforms whatever he touches from the ground up, the Moon is no match for Pluto’s power, and our feelings are intensified as a result.  We are likely to be deeply, instinctively aware that we are not in control, and may feel helpless in the face of socio-economic and political factors impacting our lives.  Our best-laid plans are up against the powers-that-be, and today their impact can feel gut-wrenchingly personal.

Since the Moon squares Mars within less than an hour of this conjunction, our emotional response is likely to turn angry very quickly, and we may find ourselves driven to action, our knee-jerk reactions rebelling against all that seems to confine us or otherwise meddle in our lives.  There can be very real conflicts with authorities as a result, so it is important to be as conscious as possible of these dynamics as we go through our day today, and wherever possible avoid going off half-cocked, and Pluto’s influence makes the consequences potentially life-changing.

This evening, our emotions become even more unsteady and unruly as the Moon squares Uranus in Aries, bringing our most rebellious impulses into the fray, stirring things up with sudden changes and potential technological breakdowns, and fomenting revolutionary disorder and even outright chaos.  On a more personal level, it would be wise to be cautious with electronics, and backup important data.  It is especially important to take precautions with travel this evening, due to the increased potential for accidents and violent crime due to this aspect amplifying the aggressive and disruptive qualities of the Mars/Pluto square with Uranian impulsiveness and the Moon’s unconsciousness.  This is an atmosphere tailor-made for crimes of passion.

A short while later the Moon in Capricorn squares Jupiter in Libra, reinforcing the ongoing opposition between Jupiter and Uranus, so we’re not likely to get much help from diplomatic quarters.  Our emotions and instincts that have been so riled up by first Pluto, then Mars, then Uranus are not likely to play nicely with Jupiter in Libra’s magnified desire for peace.  While a Capricorn Moon can be calm, traditional, and devoted, it can also be prone to fanaticism – it was the Moon sign of Hitler, after all (yes, I did just Godwin this analysis).  Jupiter’s influence is typically benevolent, but it is also magnifying, and after the day we’ve had there is a strong potential for that influence to become the final straw and blow things all out of proportion.  Or make us inclined to hide under our beds with frayed nerves and an overwhelming wish for it to all go away.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with this aspect, we may find ourselves worn-out and adrift at this point, unable to process much else.  Certainly our emotions have been through the wringer by this point, despite the Capricorn Moon’s innate tendency to keep a stiff upper lip through all the sturm und drang.  In fact, that may be the real danger in all of this – an instinctive urge toward stoicism that gets frayed about the edges but doesn’t adequately process what’s going on emotionally.  That being the case, there is one silver lining in all of this:  The final aspect of the day is a gentle, harmonious sextile between the Moon and Chiron, giving us the emotional capability to navigate our hurts tonight and gain wisdom from the process, as well as potentially helping those around us as we lick our wounds.  This is not a day I’d wish on anyone, but we may still gain some necessary growth from it all, and through it all find some human connection and mutual compassion by the end of the day.

Astrology of February 21st, 2017: Thoughts and Beliefs

Early this morning the Moon in Capricorn sextiled the Sun in Pisces, aligning our unconscious and conscious selves harmoniously, with our emotions and instincts expressing themselves in a practical, goal-driven manner and our core sense of self expressing sensitivity and compassion as well as a concern for the bigger picture.  This aspect set a tone for the early morning of combining our personal aims with the well-being of our fellows, and this was reinforced shortly thereafter by the Moon in Capricorn trining the North Node in Virgo, making us mindful of the details in relation to fulfilling our karmic purpose.  All too often people reduce the concept of karma to a glorified system of punishment and reward, but really karma is more a matter of cause and effect, the necessary balancing that must happen in response to prior actions.  I think of it a bit like kinetic energy.  Since individual karma does not occur in a vacuum, it is part of an overall pattern created by the combined karma of all.  Thus, each person’s karmic path is intertwined with the paths of others.  These two astrological aspects so close together reinforce this understanding, and help us to be mindful of our goals in service to both our own path and the greater karma of the world.

Within minutes, however, the Moon in Capricorn squares Venus in Aries, challenging our feelings and instincts with our need for action to satisfy our affections and desires.  This challenge is not necessarily a bad thing.  Since a Capricornian Moon is ambitious and goal-oriented, our instinctual drive under its influence is to get things done, but sometimes it can get bogged down in planning and cautiousness, so having an active, impatient Venus in Aries demanding that we move may very well be the impetus that we need.  Of course, Venus in Aries is likely to err more on the selfish side of the balance of personal and universal needs previously mentioned, but the consciousness inspired by the Sun/Moon sextile less than an hour earlier may still keep us mindful of our better natures, and regardless, Venus is still a benevolent influence even in a challenging aspect.  At most, this influence might impart some minor frustration regarding conflicting goals or the sacrifice of some personal comfort to fulfill a higher purpose, and since Aries is not prone to holding grudges, that is not likely to last long.

The big astrological news of the day is Mercury in Aquarius trining Jupiter in Libra toward mid-day, as aspect which affects the entire day and which we built up to during yesterday’s strong Mercury and Jupiter influences, and will still feel residual effects of tomorrow just as we are still experiencing residual effects today from yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus sextile.  Keep in mind that Mercury here is a mediating force between Jupiter and Uranus in their ongoing opposition, just as Saturn had previously been in the Triangle of Potential that was in force in December and January.  Yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus sextile and today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine form their own (short-lived) Triangle of Potential, with our thoughts and communication mediating in the struggle for balance between our personal desire for freedom and the rebellion used to achieve it and our desire for connection and peaceful relationships as well as our faith in diplomacy and social harmony.  Today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine reinforces the interaction between our thoughts and our beliefs, specifically when it comes to our faith in our social connections and personal relationships, bringing with it a strong sense of optimism and a desire for diplomatic solutions to conflict.  Now is a time to tap into Jovian good fortune in our communications and contracts, as well as in dealings with government and health concerns.

This afternoon the Sun conjuncts the South Node in Pisces, making us mindful of where we have been, and putting us in a place of power with regard to the skills that we have already developed.  Now is a time for us to be conscious of what we have learned thus far.  Of course, because the South Node is on an axis with the North Node, this puts the Sun opposite the North Node, making us conscious of what we have not yet done in pursuit of our karmic path.  The Sun’s position here may make us mindful of where we feel stuck or held back, and can increase our hunger for what we have not yet achieved.  Unless, of course, we really want to stay stuck…  Since Pisces’ transcendental ruler is Neptune, which governs our more escapist tendencies, our consciousness in this realm may find itself wishful for the past, nostalgic and content with sentimentality rather than growth.  Still, because oppositions increase awareness of the opposing forces, it is unlikely that we will be able to remain in such fantasies without having something draw our attention to where we really should be headed.  This is a good time to make peace with the past and set our sights firmly on the future, especially since Pisces’ classical ruler Jupiter is so emphasized by today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine, and therefore the more visionary and optimistic side of the Sun’s Piscean consciousness is emphasized.  Our hunger for the future is born out of the past, so this combination of aspects today may well strengthen our appetites.

Tonight, the Moon in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces, putting our emotions and instincts in harmony with our fantasies and spiritual yearnings.  This is a gently harmonious aspect, giving a pleasantly dreamy quality to the evening without taking our feet off the ground.  Whether daydreams or actual dreams, sometimes our fantasies help bolster our goals in useful ways with vision and intention.  The theory of relativity was developed as the result of a daydream, after all.  Sometimes the real world and the imagination need to join hands in order to achieve greater things, and tonight is one of those times.  This is a good time to use our imaginations in creating our plans, getting practical with our creativity and creative with our practicality, and fueling our ambitions with dreams of what might be.
