Astrology Update, April 29th, 2017: Loneliness and Home

Late this morning the Moon in Gemini sextiled Mercury retrograde in Aries and then Uranus in Aries in short succession, emphasizing the residual effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus conjunction, so that our thoughts during this time continued to change rapidly, only our moods were in a state of flux as well.  Since the sextile is a gently harmonious aspect, these fluctuations were less challenging than they would be with a harder aspect, but still we were likely to be restless and wanting to shake things up, bored with the status quo and searching for excitement.  We were not likely to be shy about vocalizing our feelings under these aspects, and communication in general was emphasized, as was socialization and meeting new people.  This was not a time for focusing on important matters, as our thoughts were likely to be running too quickly to handle deep subjects or linger anywhere for long, and our moods were too fickle to sustain any real sense of dedication from late morning into the afternoon.

Into this volatile mix of fluctuating thoughts and feelings comes a jarring square from the Moon in Gemini to Chiron in Pisces, with an opposition from the Moon to Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius a few minutes later, stirring up the rising tide of hurt and trauma invoked by tomorrow’s square between Chiron and Saturn.  The Chiron/Saturn square has been lurking in the background for the past several days, as these are slow moving planets whose influence is felt long before and after an aspect between them becomes exact, and the Moon’s interaction with both of them today creates a tense T-square formation with Chiron acting as the release point for the isolation and enforced stoicism of the Moon/Saturn opposition, triggering our awareness of painful life lessons brought on by harsh emotional interactions.  This can be an incredibly depressive time, as we gain a heightened awareness of the disappointments and failures in our lives, and our outlook leans toward the cold and grim and lonely.  While the Moon’s interactions with both Saturn and Chiron have the blessed brevity of lunar aspects, they are an uncomfortable foreshadowing of tomorrow’s harsh square between those planets that has the potential to colour our feelings for the remainder of the day.  There is also the possibility that today’s T-square configuration will heightened tensions during the climate change marches planned across the United States today, and since Saturn governs restriction and law, and in hard aspects with Chiron increases the potential for abuse, those who are marching this afternoon would do well to take extra steps for self-protection.  With its opposition to Saturn the Moon turns void-of-course for several hours, making actions taken during the late afternoon and early evening less likely to amount to anything of consequence, which may be a blessing in view of the abusive potential of the T-square, but which also makes it harder for political actions taken during this time to be heard and taken seriously.  Our judgement is likely to be impacted as well, so this is not a time for bold and decisive action.

The Moon enters Cancer tonight, the sign that it rules, making our emotions more sensitive and more potent, so that whatever we are processing during this difficult time of the Chiron/Saturn square is likely to take on greater emotional significance.  Our emotions now are likely to center around home and family, as our loyalty is increased during this lunar transit, and we may feel very protective of both ourselves and those we love, but are also likely to relate the hurts we are processing to family and loved ones as well, so the Cancerian Moon’s closeness to home is a mixed blessing this weekend.  We are more sympathetic and intuitive during this transit, but also more inclined to feel sorry for ourselves, which makes for a rough way to navigate the Chiron/Saturn square, increasing the potential for us to feel lost in martyrdom and victimhood.  The Cancerian Moon can also increase our imagination and creativity, however, so now is a time to transmute our most difficult feelings into art and imaginative solutions, releasing what we feel through music and dance.  It is also a time to put in the extra effort toward creating emotionally safe space with those we are closest to, as challenging as that may be against the backdrop of the Chiron/Saturn square, because the need for such space is near and dear to the Cancerian heart, and it is a need which is especially poignant this weekend.

The Moon in Cancer gets a little bit of much-needed support tonight from a sextile to the North Node in Virgo, giving us an instinctual awareness of the process of our soul’s growth and how our feelings tonight further that growth.  Though our moods may fluctuate, they do so with attentiveness to the details of our experiences, helping us to work through and learn from what we are feeling rather than just feeling tossed about on the waves of emotion.  We should take the time to let ourselves feel deeply tonight while we have the capacity to look at those feelings with clarity and insight, and see them in the larger context of our souls’ path to perfection.

Astrology Update, April 28th, 2017: Racing Thoughts

The Moon in Gemini started the day off with an early morning conjunction to Mars in Gemini, aligning our instincts and emotions with our aggression and sexual drive, giving us a need for action that fulfills the demands of our curiosity.  This aspect increased the potential for impulsiveness and irritability as well, so perhaps it is a blessing that most of us in the Western Hemisphere were asleep for this one, but for those early risers just waking up it could have granted an extra boost of strength and determination with which to start our day, so long as we didn’t get entangled in unnecessary conflicts along the way.

This aspect set the stage for Venus’ re-entry into Aries a few hours later, when our affections became both more flirtatious and more independent, our pleasures more self-determined.  This is territory that we’ve crossed before – twice, thanks to Venus’ recent retrograde – but now she is more sure of herself, more confident and direct and even demanding, unwilling to accept promises of pleasure that do not satisfy her needs for adventure and self-fulfillment.  Our connections with others are less soft and sultry now, more brusque and unconcerned with diplomacy, but not lacking for warmth or passion when the flame of desire is kindled.  Venus in Aries is not in the magnetic modality that she prefers, but she will make the best of the terrain in seeking new amorous adventures to amuse herself with, and with the Moon in Gemini our hearts are not likely to turn down the ride, even if they gain a few bruises along the way.

A short while later the Moon in Gemini opposed Black Moon Lilith, heightening the awareness of our unconscious, while creating tension between our desire for information and our ability to synthesize individual pieces of data into the whole picture, along with our capacity to communicate that information on a personal scale versus a grand scale.  Gemini/Sagittarius oppositions emphasize the polarity of near and far, personal versus social, thought versus belief, and in this case that polarity was being worked through on the unconscious and emotional levels, so we may have found ourselves instinctively see-sawing between different ideas and processes this morning, trying to find something that fits, while no one solution would do the trick.  What was required was integration of the spectrum between the two, and with Black Moon Lilith involved that meant immersing ourselves in the frustrations of the polarity until we could fully appreciate the spectrum.

This aspect was followed within minutes by a conjunction between Mercury and Uranus in Aries, further emphasizing fire and action in our thoughts and intuitive processing.  Our minds have been moving at lightning speed today, but we may have had trouble focusing as a result, especially with the unconscious background of our fluctuating Gemini moods.  Communication is also likely to be moving at high speed today, and those of us who prefer to carefully think things through may have had trouble keeping up.  Excitement and uncertainty are amplified by this aspect, with sudden insights and breakthroughs in technology, mathematics, science, and commerce being the harvest for those who can adapt to the breakneck pace.  This is a great time for solving puzzles, but we should be careful not to mistake assumptions for truth, especially when we are dazzled by new ideas that break us out of old routines but haven’t yet been proven.  Experimentation and testing are the name of the game under this influence.  Those of us prone to anxiety and nervousness are likely to struggle today, and we may need to consciously limit our stimuli to get through it.  Burnout is a real danger at this time, as are accidents while traveling.

More sensitive types may find it all a bit too much during the late afternoon and early evening, when the Moon in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces and we are likely to want very much to retreat into fantasy.  Introverts are especially likely to be challenged at this time, and we may need to take steps to protect ourselves from the emotional fallout of the day.  We should be especially wary of being led astray, whether by our own wishful thinking or actual deception on the part of others, and it is important not to make any important decisions at this time.  The Mercury/Uranus conjunction in Aries makes this especially crucial, since Aries is headstrong and cocksure, and may have us thinking that whatever madness Mercury and Uranus have concocted together is absolutely the right thing to do or say.  This is not a time to take anything at face value, as our perceptions are distorted by our emotions now.  Those of us prone to escaping through alcohol or drugs need to be particularly careful now – the temptation to indulge will be strong, but far more likely to cause trouble than not.

Tonight the Moon in Gemini trines Jupiter retrograde in Libra, which can bring some optimism and friendliness to help clear the fog of the Moon/Neptune square, but can also make us prone to grandiosity and over-the-top gestures, and in combination with the Mercury/Uranus conjunction could make for a wild night with potential hard consequences in the morning.  Jupiter is a benevolent influence, but retrograding in Libra is likely to draw to us situations that have us reconsidering our sociability and our relationships, and with the wild card of Mercury/Uranus in the mix we may find that Jupiter’s fun-loving influence on our emotions and instincts may get led astray by our impulses.  On the plus side, our sense of connection to others and willingness to help each other is enhanced by this aspect, but so is our willingness to give each other the benefit of the doubt – great when it helps us to overcome prejudices and be kind to our fellow man, but not so great when it leads us to ignore our common sense.  So long as we enjoy the warmth and affection of this aspect for what it is and still keep some measure of self-preservation on our radar, this can be an enjoyable night with the potential for healthy expansion of our point of view, connecting hearts and enlivening minds.

Astrology Update, April 27th, 2017: Life of the Party

Today started with the Moon in Taurus trining Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning, increasing our emotional perceptiveness and intensity.  Those of us still awake or just waking up at that hour were not likely to be interested in superficial experiences and may have found ourselves drawn into situations of complexity and power that called on us to have greater emotional awareness and feel very deeply.  Those of us still sleeping may have had unusually vivid and intricate dreams, well worth taking note of in waking hours for the secrets of our inner world that they could reveal.

The skies have been quiet since then until this afternoon’s sextile from the Moon in Taurus to Chiron in Pisces, creating a gentle harmony between our grounded emotions and the wisdom we gain from our limitations and injuries.  This afternoon is a good time to connect with those in whom we can be vulnerable and confide about the areas of life where we struggle, and if we are not feeling particularly in need of a sympathetic ear we may find ourselves in the position of the voice of experience helping to bolster the spirits of others in need.

Tonight the Moon sextiles Venus in Pisces, creating feelings of conviviality that gently steer us to gather with our friends and loved ones and enjoy the richness of our close connections.  We are likely to enjoy entertaining others in our homes tonight, as the Taurus Moon combines forces with this sign’s ruler to make us particularly house-proud now, delighting in the environments we create and sharing them with others.  This is a good time for love relationships, old and new, a time to mend relationships that have been under duress, as we can gently and lovingly communicate our feelings under this aspect and smooth over rough edges.

This aspect begins a very short void-of-course period lasting only a few minutes before the Moon enters Gemini and whatever festivities we are enjoying for the night get a boost of Gemini liveliness and charm.  Our emotions and instincts under a Gemini Moon are driven more by intellect than by sentimentality, and we are more curious, more inventive, and more communicative as a result.  Since Gemini is ruled by Mercury, quickness prevails during this transit and our moods and responses are likely to turn on a dime.  We become more impressionable under this Moon, and more free-spirited, seeking action and stimulation and thriving on change.  On the downside, our decisiveness is likely to be impaired during this time, as we want to know all the options and are keenly aware that there is always more to know, more to explore, and we are likely to resent being pinned down and expected to make a singular choice.  That said, our openness to new experiences now makes us more adventurous and fun-loving, and the Moon’s entry into this sign so soon after the Moon/Venus sextile could make for a very enjoyable night.

That said, late tonight the Moon in Gemini squares the North Node in Virgo, reminding us that not all is fun and games, and some of our adventures could lead us off the the path of our souls’ preferred mode of growth.  It’s all-too-easy to gloss over important details when we’re moving so fast, or to turn to hyperbole in place of truth.  We may find ourselves challenged to keep from losing ourselves in frivolity and superficiality, and would do well not to stray into manipulative territory in our interactions with others.  Being the life of the party is all well and good so long as we remain genuine.

Astrology Update, April 2nd, 2017: Deep Feelings

Today started off with a very early morning sextile from the Moon in Gemini to Uranus in Aries, heightening our need to try new things if we were awake at that hour (or still awake, in the case of West Coast night owls!).  The curiosity and inventiveness of Gemini fueled the rebel fire of Uranus, and for those of us prone to insomnia may have added to our restlessness, but since this was a harmonious sextile we were most likely to have gotten a Eureka moment or two to help make up for any lack of sleep, as this was a good supportive aspect to help boost the inventive and intuitive powers of the creative and scientifically-minded among us, and the perfect influence for late-night/early morning tech tinkerers.

Still relatively early in the morning the Moon in Gemini squared Chiron in Pisces, increasing the likelihood of those of us with chronic illnesses waking up sore, and frustrating our efforts to communicate effectively with others about what ails us.  Or, we may have found ourselves having difficulty being sympathetic to the ailments of others at this time, or may even have been unsympathetic to our own sensitivities, and pushed ourselves too hard right out of the gate this morning.  Whatever the case, this aspect is likely to have increased early morning grumpiness and irritability, and decreased patience in the process.  Those of us waiting on medical diagnoses or lab results were likely to experience frustration as well, and those of us working in these fields would do well to be extra diligent in re-checking our numbers and communications as the morning progresses, as this aspect is likely to test even the kindliest bedside manner.

Late this morning the Moon in Gemini opposes Saturn in Sagittarius, adding a serious and even depressive note to our feelings.  Our instincts now are more likely to tend to the pessimistic, and we may find ourselves more hesitant about our communication now, more uncertain of ourselves and less willing to take risks.  Or, we may find ourselves more inclined to compartmentalize our social dealings along tribal lines, unwilling to share our mental and emotional space with those who do not share our beliefs.  We may find ourselves speaking more abruptly, or more stridently, asserting our “rightness” when deep down we are in fact very uncertain of what is truly right, or we may find our words and social interactions bumping up against long-held beliefs that may no longer be truly serving us, or that we may realize are in fact severely limiting us.  This aspect heightens awareness of the disconnect between our desire to explore new ideas and communicate and ingrained belief patterns that are based in fear and insecurity and are ultimately divisive.  So while this aspect can be disruptive to our moods, it can help us to reconsider how our beliefs drive our instinctive responses.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with that last aspect, the late morning today is a time to stick to our routines and not embark on any bold new ventures or schedule any important meetings.  That said, it can be a good time for editing, correcting, repairing, and assessing areas of our lives and environments that need revision or cleaning up.

Around mid-day the Moon enters Cancer, coming into the sign that it rules and its place of power.  Our emotions and instincts are at home in watery Cancer, sensitive and attuned to the ebb and flow of life, and protective of self, home, and loved ones.  Cancer has a reputation for moodiness, but really is concerned with creating safe space for genuine feeling to flow freely.  This is why Cancer is associated with home, and mother – under this sign the Moon shows us the truth of our feelings, which are not static from moment to moment, and our instinctive reactions are more deeply intuitive now.  We are more likely to listen to others now, and more interested in being around people we already know – our friends and family are especially important to us now.  We may find ourselves a bit more critical now toward those who we deem insensitive, and while we are very good at riding out changes under this influence, we are also a bit more risk-averse.  This aspect makes for canny business dealings among those attuned to this energy, as Cancer may govern home but its protectiveness of what we deem our own extends to business matters that we are heavily invested in, whether emotionally or practically or both.  Plus, Cancerian sensitivity increases our ability to sense the emotions of others, to read the mood of a room when we walk in, and thus more accurately assess the currents of our social and business dealings and know intuitively when a deal is about to go bad, or when is the exact right moment to step in and seize the advantage.  Professions that deal with caring for others such as nursing and psychology may benefit under this influence, but so may those that rely on social engineering and keen instincts, including politics and trading, such as retail sales or import and export businesses.  Small business owners are especially favored during this time.

Within minutes of entering Cancer the Moon squares off against Venus retrograde in Aries, putting our already beleaguered pleasures and affections at odds with our instincts, and making it more difficult for us to connect with others.  We may feel as though whatever we want for ourselves is out of reach due to social pressure or timing, or we may feel a conflict between new friends and old, or between a new love and our family.  Since the Venus retrograde has had us reassessing the ways in which we express and experience pleasure and connection as well as self-image, our insecurities may be heightened by this aspect, and we are likely to feel social discord more deeply and distressingly.  We may find ourselves less willing to make waves as a result, and may give in more easily on matters of importance to us just to keep from making ourselves or others feel worse.

Thankfully, this afternoon the Moon in Cancer sextiles Mercury in Taurus, helping us to feel more steady and secure and to express our feelings in practical, grounded terms.  Our thoughts and intuitions are in alignment with this aspect, and our ability to read the situations we find ourselves in is enhanced without throwing our moods off so easily.  This is a great time for sympathetic communication that doesn’t drown in emotion – we are able to listen carefully and understand instinctively what others are feeling, while remaining level-headed ourselves.  This is a great problem-solving influence, especially for problems that contain a social component.

This problem-solving capacity is built on further this afternoon as the Moon in Cancer sextiles the North Node in Virgo, putting our emotions in alignment with our karmic path and personal growth, particularly as it relates to our health, daily habits, and the ways in which we are of service to others.  Relations with pets are favored now, especially service animals, and we can gain greater understanding of how our emotions and relations with family and friends affect our health.  The North Node in Virgo has been a time of spiritual development that is grounded in the real world, and with this sextile to the Moon in Cancer our lessons gain the wisdom of our intuitions and our emotional connections.  Now is a time for intuiting what practical steps we need to take in pursuit of our personal development, and for connecting our growth with that of those with whom we feel emotional kinship.

The big astrological news of the day is the last notable event of the night, when Venus retrograde enters Pisces, and the introspection we’ve been doing regarding our self-image and how we connect with others turns less self-concerned and more universal.  We are likely to find our compassion expanded under this influence, and may find ourselves giving our affections more readily to hard-luck cases and those who inspire our sympathy.  Since Venus is still retrograde (and will be until April 15th), we may still be more tentative with our love, but we are also more sensitive to such matters now, and more inclined toward romanticism.  Venus’ retrograde path through Pisces asks us to reconsider how our affections tap into more universal experience, how we are connected on a broader level as a result of the ways in which we get personal.  Our sense of aesthetics is likely to be softer now, our ways of expressing our desires gentler.  We are more likely to be accepting of contradictions and paradoxes in our relationships now, more able to go with the flow, and we can better intuit our way through our interactions with others.  That said, we are more likely to wear rose-coloured glasses when it comes to our affections now, and should be mindful of our choices in order to avoid getting led down the garden path, especially in romantic endeavors.  Still, this is a time when we can reconnect with our romantic souls, feeling the spiritual side of love and affection, and understanding more deeply what those things mean to us.

Astrology Update, April 1st, 2017: Big Talk

This morning the Moon in Gemini sextiled the Sun in Aries, fueling the warmth of our action-oriented Aries consciousness with unconscious liveliness and an instinct for communication.  We may have found ourselves pleasantly restless, energetic and ready to get going even if we are not normally morning people.  Our feelings were aligned with our consciousness, our core sense of self animated and courageous, eager to set out on the day’s adventures.  When Gemini and Aries join forces we can experience a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around us, even wonder, and will happily communicate that with anyone who will listen, making for a convivial mood to start the day with.

A short while later, however, the Moon in Gemini squared Neptune in Pisces, putting our mood into a fog and making us more likely to be led astray by unrealistic expectations.  The Moon in Gemini has our instincts operating on an intellectual level but Neptune in Pisces blurs the edges of our unconscious perceptions, creating a sense of distrust and uncertainty, and we may have found ourselves in situations this morning that beguiled us with something that stirred our sympathies only to leave us feeling taken advantage of by something or someone not living up to our original impressions.  We may have found ourselves wanting to escape for a bit, wishing the real world would go away, and the traces of this feeling may have lingered even into mid-day.

Thankfully, tonight we get our curiosity and sociability renewed via a trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra, expanding our instinct to communicate and increasing our feelings of faith and optimism.  This is a great time to meet new people, or to build upon already-established relationships that can benefit from sharing ideas.  Mutual enjoyment of films and media is favored at this time, and actors have an auspicious alignment for connecting with their audiences now.  This is a great time for generating ideas, especially for writers and inventors, and speech writers and preachers can create some of their more inspiring work at this time.  This is a night for orators!  It’s also a good night for networking and sales, as well as a good night for games, and a night for testing our luck – if we’ve been a bit too risk-averse tonight might help us to get out of whatever rut we’ve been languishing in, especially if that risk we’ve been avoiding involves communication or relationships.

Late tonight Gemini’s ruler Mercury in Taurus trines the North Node in Virgo, the other Mercury-ruled sign, putting the power of our minds to work on behalf of our souls’ purpose.  Though our emotions and instincts may be feeling a bit giddy due to the larger-than-life connection of the Moon/Jupiter trine, our minds have the practical fortitude of Taurus helping us to learn from our experiences and grow more fully into the people our souls want us to be.  We are likely to be more conscious of the details of our growth process, more concerned with perfecting new skills that lead us in the direction we most need to go, yet thanks to the steadiness of Taurus more patient than ever with our own imperfections.  In combination with the lucky favor of the Moon/Jupiter trine, this makes tonight a great time to try the new things that can help us to make real progress in both the material and spiritual worlds, moving forward on our souls’ quest to be our own best selves.
