Astrology Update, March 9th, 2017: Full of Heart

As with the Mercury/Pluto sextile on March 7th, today we experience harmony between our practical goals and our compassionate sensitivity as a result of the Sun/Pluto sextile that started off today first thing in the very wee hours of the morning (some of us were just getting to bed at that hour…).  However, this time it’s not simply our minds getting a boost of power from Pluto, but rather our whole consciousness.  The core of our being is feeling supported by the larger forces in our lives rather than at odds as is too often the case.  We are now conscious of the process of transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us, and may feel a certain degree of connection with others resulting from that.  This is the season of shedding the old, unwanted baggage of the past year or more (or perhaps a few pounds from this winter), preparing for the burst of energy and activity that comes with Spring, and this aspect helps us to get more comfortable with that process, even when it’s not actually comfortable.  Pisces is a sign of contradictions, after all, adept at working within paradox, and Capricorn has mastered the art of the silver lining, seeing opportunity in every seeming setback.  These two signs navigate loss better than the rest of the zodiac, so now is the time to take full advantage of their assistance and perhaps do a little preparatory spring cleaning, whether of our psyches or our actual physical surroundings.

Later this morning the Moon in Leo trined Venus in Aries, giving a magnanimous boost of fiery self-confidence from our unconscious to our social relations that have been in the retrograde process of reassessment, and may have been feeling a bit shaky since the beginning of the retrograde this past weekend.  Though the Moon’s action is unconscious, Leo’s ruler is the Sun, so Leo is also reaping the benefit of today’s Sun/Pluto sextile, so the Lion is feeling mighty today, albeit with a more sympathetic bent thanks to the Sun’s position in Pisces.  This in turn helps to bring out the fun, flirty side of Venus in Aries, and perhaps even some childlike joy, as Aries is youngest sign and Leo rules the 5th house of children.  Thus, our instinctual response to this alignment is likely to be playful and affectionate, reminding us that even serious matters can benefit from a bit of fun – games teach us a host of beneficial skills, after all, in addition to increasing camaraderie through friendly competition.

Early this evening Mars enters Taurus, giving our energies a break from the more aggressive side of competition and turning our focus to a more steady, practical mode.  Taurus is the sign of fixed earth, slow and not easily stirred to action, yet having a deep reserve of power in the material realm.  Mountains don’t normally make much visible movement, but when they do, they are a force to be reckoned with.  Thus, we are likely to find ourselves in much less of a hurry than we were during Mars’ transit of Aries, but when we do have a mind to move, when we really want to get something done, now we put the force of a mountain behind it.  A Taurus roused to action is an unstoppable force!  It is also a force that favors the finer things in life.  Our focus now is likely to be centered on material needs and desires, physical and financial security.  This is a good time to tend to our bodies in preparation for the spring and summer months, though Taurus likes its food so we may experience some dietary challenges along the way.  This is definitely a good time to tend to financial matters, not simply in connection with tax season but in relation to building and improving upon our finances and establishing better habits with regard to money and material things.  This is also a good time for enjoying the arts, whether as creator, audience, or patron, as Venus’ rulership of Taurus gives Mars in this position more impetus toward creativity and aesthetically-informed activities.

This Mars/Venus interaction is heightened now, as Mars’ entry into Taurus, one of the two signs that Venus rules and Venus’ current retrograde in Aries, one of the two signs that Mars rules, has put the two gendered personal planets in a state of limited mutual reception, each in the place of the other’s power until the beginning of April, with potential support for each other as a result.  I say that this is a limited mutual reception because with Venus in retrograde, her usual power is diminished, being expressed in a mode of re-assessment while retracing her steps through Mars’ home sign.  Also, because these two are not currently in aspect to each other, the state of mutual reception is more subdued now, but will slowly grow stronger as they approach the same degree of each sign, arriving at a semi-sextile aspect on March 21st (a gently supportive aspect of 30 degrees apart).  Still, despite the weakened state of their reception, there may be a sense of increased understanding of the other’s space during this time and greater awareness between the two, which may provide opportunities for better gender relations during this time as well as for more understanding of non-binary gender identities.

Late tonight the Moon in Leo sextiles Jupiter in Libra, bringing Jupiter’s expansive optimism in relationships and social realms to magnify the proud, generous, joyful feelings of the Leo Moon.  This is the perfect time for late-night camaraderie, creative expression, or more intimate interactions.  Performers get an extra dose of drama tonight, in all the right ways.  Children may be wakeful later than usual, and perhaps unusually ebullient, so parents would do well to be prepared for additional story requests, or difficulty in surrendering the video game controller in favor of bed.  And our lovers may be more demanding than usual, though we aren’t likely to complain about that under this passionate Moon.  However this influence plays out, it’s a good time for revelling in whatever brings us joy.

Astrology Update, March 8th, 2017: Time to Shine

Today is a day of few astrological aspects, but that doesn’t mean it’s quiet.  We are still feeling the effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Pluto sextile giving transformative power to our thoughts, and that same power is about to connect with our consciousness in a big way with tomorrow’s Sun/Pluto sextile, which we are already starting to feel the effects of.

Meanwhile, the Moon in Cancer started off the morning by squaring Mars in Aries, stirring up emotions and frustrations, and potentially increasing the likelihood of conflict.  Cancerian emotions and instincts tend to be sensitive and protective, so butting heads with the aggressive drive of Mars in Aries amplifies Cancerian moodiness and increases the likelihood of the Crab breaking out the claws in self-defense.  Since Mars in Aries isn’t likely to back down from a fight, this morning may have seen more than a few quarrels and hurt feelings, especially in relation to those of us pursuing our own interests without considering the impact of our actions on the more sensitive people in our circles.  On the plus side, since this square started a short void-of-course period, these quarrels are less likely to have a long-term impact, even if this influence did start the day off on the wrong foot.

Toward mid-morning the Moon entered Leo, making our emotions and instincts bolder and more eager to take center stage.  Leo governs the 5th house of self-expression, the house of art, creativity, children, games, lovers, and other pleasurable pursuits.  Leo is ruled by the Sun, so this lion is perhaps a little gentler and more sympathetic than usual, but still, this is not a time to be timid!  We are more likely to be given to grand expression of emotion now, being more open and generous with who we are and how we feel.  We are also more likely to want to be noticed, and more likely to get cranky if we feel we are not getting our lordly due.  The king of the jungle is not interested in playing second fiddle to anyone but is still perfectly capable of sharing the throne with an acknowledged equal for a mate or delegating the actual business of rulership to a competent power-behind-the-throne type, so long as the king still gets the spotlight.  So it is with our egoic emotions and instincts now – under this Moon we want plenty of attention and ego-stroking, but are more than happy to share the bounty, and with multiple favorable aspects over the next 24 hours that bounty is likely to be warm and benevolent like the Sun.  This is the perfect time to step into greater feelings of self-esteem and healthy pride, a chance to shine at what we are best at, sharing our creativity and accomplishments with others and taking pleasure in the things that make life most worthwhile.

The only astrological aspect this afternoon is that of the Moon in Leo trining Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, heightening our intuitive knowing and capacity to learn on an unconscious level, basking in the warmth and optimism generating by the harmonious alignment of these two signs.  Since Black Moon Lilith brings our unconscious closer to consciousness (she occupies space between the Moon and the Sun), and the Moon is in a Sun-ruled sign now, we have a wonderful opportunity to make use of a combination of conscious and unconscious energies now, surrendering ourselves to vital and pleasurable experience in creative and expressive realms that reveal our truest ideals and beliefs.  Under this alignment we are even equipped to understand and make use of our shadow sides in service to our creativity and further our growth even while being perhaps a tad self-indulgent.  😉

Astrology of February 11th, 2017: An Expansive View

After all of the astrological activity yesterday, the limited number of aspects today might make things seem quiet by comparison.  However, what today lacks in quantity of events it makes up for in power.

The day started out with the Moon in Leo void-of-course until around dawn, when the Moon squared Black Moon Lilith shortly before entering Virgo.  As previously mentioned on this blog, Black Moon Lilith is in the final critical degree of Scorpio, and asks us to get clear on our focus and what we must let go of or surrender to in pursuit of our goals, particularly when it comes to our deepest, darkest emotional desires.  This challenge from the Moon this morning may well have put our emotions into a startlingly dark place after so much brightness yesterday, but there is still wisdom to be gained from this challenge playing out in our unconscious depths, however uncomfortably.

The Moon’s entry into Virgo immediately afterward gives our emotions and instincts some much-needed earthy grounding after of the air-fueled fiery intensity that was ruling the skies yesterday.  Of course, since the Virgo Moon is also known as the “Medicine Chest Moon” those of us who are particularly sensitive may be feeling the aftermath of yesterday’s fire physically today, so this is a time to tend to the body via exercise, nutrition, and rest.  Also, despite being an earth sign Virgo is ruled by Mercury (currently in Aquarius), so this is a time favoring mental processing, flavored by the social concerns of Aquarius, but also needing careful and detailed thought to tend to our own growth.  Virgo is known to be fact-finding, critical, and perfectionist, so we may feel some additional frustration when others don’t see eye-to-eye with us on how best to solve problems, or when our own plans fail to live up to our expectations, and we need to be careful not to beat ourselves up or play the martyr as a result.  However, Virgo is also good for having patience with process, understanding seasons and cycles, which is a useful awareness to combine with our instincts right now, especially after the powerful surge forward that yesterday’s cosmic activity may have directed us toward.  The Virgo Moon reminds us that the great problems of our time will not be solved in a day.  Patience and steady attention to detail are favored now.

A couple of hours later the two biggest gravitational forces in our solar system trined – the Sun in Aquarius and Jupiter in Libra – giving a massive surge of air power from those signs and emphasizing the use of reason and intellect in our social endeavors while connecting our relationships with our good fortune, whether those are personal relationships or group activities and causes.  Since Jupiter and the Sun move more slowly than the Moon, this aspect is in play all day today and into tomorrow, and we probably felt the build-up toward it as part of the powerful combination of energies during yesterday’s Full Moon and eclipse, which we are also still feeling the reverberations of today.  Now is a time to be conscious of all that we have to be grateful for, all that inspires us and strengthens our faith.  Not only spiritual faith is emphasized here but more importantly our faith that we are up to the tasks ahead of us, our faith that things will work out for the best, our trust in the Universe and our place in it.  Our philosophies and worldviews are highlighted during this time, and we have a greater capacity to accept viewpoints different from our own and integrate them into the bigger picture.  Just as Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn have been forming a Triangle of Potential over the past couple of months that is now slowly moving out of orb, the Sun during the past two days has been forming another Triangle of Potential with Jupiter and Uranus, supporting both our faith in social harmony and our rebellion and need for freedom in coming to a point of balance for the good of humanity as a whole, and today’s trine with Jupiter emphasizes the social side of that equation even more.

Toward mid-day, the last of today’s astrological aspects saw the Moon in Virgo conjunct the North Node, emphasizing instinctive attention to detail in terms of our karmic path.  You may remember that the North Node had the apex of the Finger of God (Yod) on it yesterday, and the Mercury/Venus sextile that triggered it is still loosely in effect today, so this continues the focus on our life’ purpose under pressure from our communication and our values, especially since Virgo’s ruler Mercury is one of the active players in this configuration.  Since the Moon is activating this configuration today, our focus here is not likely to be within the realm of conscious thought, but nonetheless our emotions and instincts on the subject today are likely to be more thoughtful, more concerned with the details and mechanisms of how things work, and what seemingly little things need to be tended to in order to realize the potential of the grand picture presented by the Sun/Jupiter trine dominating the day and the rest of the weekend.

Astrology of February 10th, 2017: Full Moon and Eclipse in Leo

The morning may seem clear of notable astrological  aspects, but don’t let that fool you – today is filled with some pretty powerful alignments, and this morning is simply a build-up of planetary energies in preparation for the cosmic spectacle this afternoon.

The day starts in style with Mercury in Aquarius sextiling Venus in Aries this afternoon, and since this is a planetary aspect its gently supportive effects will be felt throughout the day (part of the aforementioned build-up).  Those of us who made use of the more… affectionate side of all that fiery energy yesterday may well have something to talk about this morning, and the Mercury/Venus sextile helps to make such talks go smoothly, albeit with some spirit.  We are also likely to take a very personal pleasure in our communication with groups at this time, as well as communication in relation to social causes, so if you’ve got a fiery speech ready to persuade people to do the right thing, now’s the time to use it!

This Mercury/Venus sextile also is the base of a focused Yod (the “Finger of God”) along the Nodal Axis, with the apex at the North Node in Virgo and the releasing point at the South Node in Pisces.  This aspect combines the influence of Mercury and Venus to put pressure on the North Node via a pair of inconjuncts between the sextiling planets and the apex, and thus whatever use we make of our communication and affections at this time will draw attention to our karmic paths, whether for good or ill according to our free will.  That pressure may create a certain amount of instability in our efforts toward personal growth, but there is power there as well, to be used judiciously.  We may find ourselves falling back on the things that come most easily to us but don’t teach us anything new in an effort to relieve some of the pressure on the North Node, but now is a time to make that pressure work for us, especially with the rest of the astrological activity this afternoon and evening giving us the courage to do so.

This afternoon also sees a trine between the Moon in Leo and Uranus in Aries, continuing the fast-paced Uranian influence and the proud and expressive emotions and instincts of yesterday united in one powerful force.  Since this is a harmonious aspect, this is a great time to make use of an increased flow of creative ideas in moving ourselves forward in the hopes of staking a claim in our preferred realm, whatever that may be, though technological and forward-thinking endeavors are favored, as well as those which create social change.  Keep in mind that Uranus in aspect with the Moon increases the likelihood of mood fluctuations and sudden changes, but with a favorable aspect like this such changes are much easier to navigate, and may well be welcome distractions.

In the late afternoon and early evening we are treated to the combination of the Full Moon in Leo and a penumbral eclipse, when the Moon is shadowed not by the Earth herself but by the edge of her atmosphere, dimming the Moon’s reflection of the Sun’s light but not darkening it completely.  All Full Moons represent culminating energy, a time when the intentions we set at the New Moon come into their fullness, to be released out into the world during the waning of the Moon. The penumbral eclipse creates an added charge to this process, bringing us to a point of crisis that results in epiphany.  This is a time for breakthroughs, but they won’t be without cost.  Lunar eclipses tend to deal with our relationships, both one-on-one and those with a larger reach, and with the Leo/Aquarius polarity involved here there is an added emphasis on navigating the space between self and other, the personal and the impersonal, the needs of the individual versus the needs of the group.

A Leo Full Moon is a time to work on goals relating to self-expression, the arts, lovers, and children, which we are hoping to bring to fruition over the course of the next two weeks until the New Moon and then with the eclipse in the mix we can extend those goals and work on them within the larger pattern over the course of the next six months until the Solar eclipse in August.  Today’s Leo Moon cycles through harmonious aspects with all three of the outer planets involved in the Triangle of Potential that’s been in effect since the holidays, albeit now slowly drifting out of orb, so the Triangle is once again being activated by our emotions and instincts.  Thus, our goals for the rest of the month and for the next six months are going to work best when they take the themes of the Triangle of Potential into account:  balancing change and social harmony, individual growth and the growth of society, the need for freedom and the hope and luck generated by good relationships and partnerships in particular.  With Saturn being the mediator between Jupiter and Uranus in this balancing act, discipline will be necessary to carry us through, but that discipline does not need to become self-punishing.

In addition, yesterday’s Sun/Uranus sextile is still in effect, and the Sun opposing the Moon (which is what a Full Moon is) in combination with the Sun/Uranus sextile, the Moon/Uranus trine, the Moon/Jupiter sextile following shortly after the eclipse, tomorrow’s Sun/Jupiter trine (which is already being felt today), and the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition all together form a Mystic Rectangle, a combination of polarities between Air and Fire, and Masculine and Feminine energies that requires that we give equal attention to all four bodies in these two oppositions (Sun/Moon, Jupiter/Uranus) and the elemental principles that they invoke, thought and spirit, communication and action, as well as temperaments of the four signs involved, Aquarius/Leo and Libra/Aries.  This is a beautifully optimistic configuration to use in putting our talents to work in connection with the Full Moon and eclipse energies.  Challenging, yes, but deeply beneficial if we make good use of it.  In particular we are being asked to balance our conscious and unconscious awareness, and our social and individual needs.  Tall order!  But a worthy one, and one which the combination of celestial events today make clear is well within our power.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, the Full/Eclipsed Moon in Leo activates a Grand Fire Trine with Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius, further emphasizing themes of revolutionary change backed by discipline and emotional fervor with courageous instincts.  Our spirits are blazing with this energy now, and so long as we don’t let it burn us out we can do amazing things with it, with a steady eye to the long term.    This configuration emphasizes our capacity to both ride and direct the waves of change sweeping through our lives in the next six months, both personally and politically.  There is no better time to get involved!

The Moon in Leo sextiling Jupiter in Libra this evening emphasizes the social aspect of this equation, helping us to see how we can express ourselves fully while still valuing and maintaining social harmony and balancing our needs with the needs of others.  This time sees the likelihood that legal matters will work in our favor and may smooth over our dealings with authorities.  It also increases our courage in social situations, making for a good start to the weekend.

Later tonight the Moon in Leo trines Saturn in Sagittarius, which may turn our mood a bit more serious, but since the trine is the most favorable of aspects that seriousness is likely to work to our advantage and bolster our courage.  We may well impress others with our dedication and loyalty at this time, especially if we have been making good use of today’s mojo in service to our very best goals.  Since this aspect starts a void-of-course period, any bold moves are best to have been begun before this late-night time, leaving the end of the night to socialize, plan, and put the finishing touches on the Full Moon and eclipse intentions that we are sending out into the world, and then to dream on them in the floating, intuitive time that the void-of-course brings.

Astrology of February 9th, 2017: Meant to be Enjoyed

The day starts off very early with the void-of-course Moon in Cancer trining Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio in the wee hours.  I’ve already written a sizable amount about Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio here, both in relation to her current position at the critical 29th degree and in relation to this trine.  The short version is that this trine confronts us with the need to surrender to our deepest darkest feelings at this time, particularly our feelings of frustration and helplessness in the face of the larger forces in our lives that we can’t control.  This is not a recipe for victimhood; indeed, embracing the void is a necessary step in knowing the fullness of who we are and what we feel, and prepares us to claim our power to face the future by acknowledging and letting go of the past.  For those who aren’t awake at this hour like I am, this may be a fruitful time for dreaming, though I suspect that most will give themselves over to the deepest, darkest, most dreamless sleep at this time, a balm for wounded souls…

Less than an hour later the Moon enters Leo, and our feelings change from moody and self-protective to proud and self-expressive.  Leo rules the 5th house of self-expression, creativity, children, lovers, and pleasurable pursuits.  The Moon in this sign wants people to notice when we walk in the room, and for the next couple of days we are likely to see egos bloom, and in some situations may wind up with too many kings wanting the throne at once.  That said, over the years I’ve come to see that Leo tends to want whatever it considers its “lordly due” and as long as it gets that it is happy to be benevolent and generous, loyal to allies, magnificently self-assured, and bounteous just like the Sun that rules this sign, and when well-aspected happy to let others take the reigns in realms other than its most treasured.  Remember that what we consider our “lordly due” under this influence is within emotional, instinctive, and unconscious realms, and the tone with which that expresses itself will be moved back and forth in the ebb and flow of each aspect made within this lunar cycle.

The first of these aspects happens when the Moon in Leo opposes Mercury in Aquarius later this morning.  Those proud Leonine instincts may find themselves staring down our thoughts, our hearts pitted against our heads.  We may wish to leap into the fray in defense of a loved one only to find our words doing more harm than good.  Or our generosity may outweigh our other intentions for our wallets, and cause us to over-extend ourselves.  Or our desire to be rulers of our realms may bump up against our perceptions of our place within the social order, for better or for worse.  On the plus side, this is a time of heightened awareness of these dynamics and with it and increase in situations that will encourage us to seek balance between these forces.

Joyfully, the rest of the day’s aspects are likely to feed the best in Leo in terms of influencing our moods.  In late morning the Moon in Leo trines Venus in Aries, making us practically purr in response to affection and pleasure, and likely to be generous with the same in return.

The astrological event going hand-in-hand with the Moon’s entry into Leo today is this afternoon’s sextile between the Sun in Aquarius and Uranus in Aries, the same sign that Venus and Mars are both currently residing in.  This is a harmonious aspect, but is likely to add some electricity to the air for most of the day, so chances are that it will heighten the livelier effects of the Moon’s trine with Venus and the subsequent trine between the Moon and Mars this evening.

I tend to look at the energies surrounding astrological events as triggering chain reactions whose expression is based on the types of elemental forces at work, as well as the impact of those forces on each other and their surroundings.  With the exception of that last watery gasp of the Moon/Black Moon Lilith trine so soon after the witching hour, the elemental forces of these noted aspects today are all fire and the air that feeds fire, along with a significant dose of electricity.  Our communication today is likely to be highly technologically based as a result, and our passions afire in a big way, but also a distinctly socially-conscious way – chances are that we just want to play, but our games are not completely frivolous with that revolutionary Uranian energy at work in the same sign with our affections and desires and our focused pursuit of them.  The lion is on the hunt!  With the Moon trining Mars this evening following the Sun/Uranus sextile following the Moon/Venus trine, the atmosphere is likely to be both creatively and sexually charged, filled with a vest for life to make our hearts pound and remind us that we are still here, still strong, and for all its ups and downs life is still meant to be enjoyed.
