Astrology Update, April 11th, 2017: Increasing Focus

This morning the Moon in Libra opposed Uranus in Aries, continuing the intense and erratic energies of last night’s Full Moon.  Uranus governs sudden change, rebellion, and technology, and when in hard aspect to the Moon its unconscious fluctuations can become even more unstable, so this morning may have seen technological issues as well as emotional agitation and flare-ups in tempers.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Libra sextiled Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, helping to stabilize our emotions and instincts and steering us back on a more practical track.  Saturn in aspect to the Moon tends to increase our seriousness, but since the sextile is a harmonious aspect this is likely to have been a helpful influence this morning, helping our social interactions with Saturn’s discipline and clear boundaries.  This aspect also started a lunar void-of-course period, encouraging us to settle into routine while processing the lessons of the Libra transit, and discouraging any bold new moves before the Moon’s entry into Scorpio early this evening.

The Moon’s entry into Scorpio sees our emotions and instincts transition from rational, fair, and socially harmonious to intense, focused, and secretive.  We simultaneously feel more deeply but are less interested in talking about what we feel.  This lunar transit encourages us to take an interest in hidden things and helps us to intuitively get to the heart of what others are feeling, helping those of us in human services and research-related professions.  This transit also throws control issues into focus – we may find ourselves behaving more compulsively during this transit, and our emotions can turn obsessive.  We become more persistent in our endeavors during this time, especially those in which we are emotionally invested, and we are not likely to be satisfied with half-measures.

Tonight the Moon in Scorpio sextiles the North Node in Virgo, bringing that persistence to bear on our pursuit of our souls’ purpose.  Our instinctive pursuit of hidden information is bolstered by the Virgoan North Node’s attention to details and concern with process and growth, and our progress in learning the new skills that move our souls forward is enhanced by our increased emotional focus and intensity.  This is a good night for learning what is needed to move us forward on our paths.

Astrology Update, April 10th, 2017: Full Moon in Libra

Today sees few notable astrological aspects, but that doesn’t mean that it’s quiet.  The Moon in Libra waits until late this afternoon/early evening to get things started with a conjunction to Jupiter retrograde.  Jupiter has a tendency to magnify whatever he touches, so our emotions are likely to feel bigger now, our instincts more grand, the activity of our unconscious broader in scope and more philosophical.  Our social urges may become more pronounced now, but still are likely to have some of the tentative, reconsidering quality of the retrograde, especially with so many other planets recently in retrograde and emphasized in the past few days.  Those of us in relationships may find ourselves more focused on them now, and those of us without may be more inclined to try to change that solitary state.  We may also feel more optimistic at this time, more inclined to be forgiving and generous, and inclined to gather with others.

That said, the recent Jupiter/Pluto square is still in effect, and the Moon in Libra sees fit to remind us of those tensions with a square to Pluto as the night progresses.  The already-broadened scope of our emotions gets a boost of intensity to amplify what we feel even more, and our knee-jerk reactions are likely to be intensified as well.  We may find our reactions far exceeding the scope of what we normally consider reasonable, and may be hard-pressed to explain why.  Pluto in contact with the Moon can increase obsessiveness and compulsiveness, as Pluto tends to bring control issues into focus, and we may find ourselves drawn to more intense experiences tonight that have us questioning the extent of our control or bumping up against the control issues of others.  Secrets may be revealed tonight, and those of us with an interest in the occult may find this to be a useful time in our studies, despite its challenges (or perhaps because of them).

The big astrological news of the night is tonight’s Full Moon in Libra.  The Full Moon is time to set intentions, and the polarity of the Sun’s consciousness in Aries with the Moon’s unconsciousness in Libra asks that we acknowledge our unconscious need for relationships even as we are consciously pursuing our individual goals.  The Moon opposes Uranus early tomorrow morning and is within orb for us to feel that opposition during the Full Moon tonight.  The Moon opposing Uranus creates electrifying feelings and impulsive reactions, which in combination with the expansiveness of Jupiter and intensity and obsessive/compulsiveness of Pluto could make this Full Moon a handful, especially for those in law enforcement, hospitals, and other institutions, given Pluto in Capricorn’s emphasis on institutions and maintainance of the status quo being challenged by our need for social harmony and resulting hyper-responsiveness to social cues and disturbances, and the challenge our emotions are already starting to feel from Uranus-conjunct-Eris’ combined forces of rebellion and disruption.  Sensitive individuals would do well to set up easy exit strategies for social situations in case it all becomes too much to handle, and those in positions of authority should prepare for challenges to that authority.  Expecting the unexpected is the best stance for tonight, and those of us working with the intention-setting power of the Full Moon should include the ability to adapt to sudden changes within the structure of our intentions, as well as surprises from unseen quarters.  With Mercury retrograde in Taurus still in orb to feel the trine with the North Node in Virgo, and Mars in Taurus still in orb to feel its trine with Pluto in Capricorn, for all its sociability this is not a frivolous Full Moon, and we are likely to feel how we respond to the social conundrums of tonight enhancing our understanding of how we plan and communicate our souls’ intentions in the physical world, as well as our ability to manifest our desires materially in ways work in harmony with the larger forces and hidden powers in our lives.  This may be an intense Full Moon, but it is also instructive.

Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

*******

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.

Astrology Update, March 15th, 2017: Operatic Intensity

Early this morning the Moon in Libra sextiled Saturn in Sagittarius, aligning our socially harmonious instincts with our disciplined and patient expression of our beliefs.  Our ability to see the big picture during this time was aided by our desire for peaceful interactions with others, and our relationships strengthened by our philosophical views, setting the day off on steady and reasonable footing.  This started a void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, making sticking to routine the best course for the morning.

A little later in the morning Mercury in Aries trined Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, helping us to consciously understand and communicate some of the unconscious wisdom we have been gaining in relation to our beliefs and social values, and to learn more about ourselves and others in the process.  Our willingness to expand our views is enhanced at this time, and we are more conscious of the shadow side of our philosophies now, and more capable of making use of that consciousness to benefit both ourselves and others.  We are likely to be forthright and even aggressive in our communications today, and may find more enjoyment in exploring ideas and communication now.  This influence lasts throughout the day, making this an excellent day for learning in general, but especially for learning about the spiritual beliefs and philosophies of other cultures, particularly those beliefs that relate to women.

Late this morning the Moon enters Scorpio, giving us greater emotional focus and intensity.  We are likely to talk less about what we feel even as we feel more, and we are more likely to experience extremes in our emotions now, even as we keep tighter control on our reactions.  This Moon position enhances our ambition and drive, so we may feel motivated to accomplish more during the next couple of days.  We may also find ourselves being more observant, able to ferret out hidden details and secrets that we had previously overlooked.  Our standards are higher now, our ideals brought to the forefront, and we may find those around us have difficulty living up to our expectations.  We may be more distrustful now, more concerned with the degree to which others have control over us or portions of our lives, and may find ourselves engaged in power struggles during this time as a result.  We are likely to be more self-reliant now, with greater capabilities for manifesting what we desire, and we will not be easily dissuaded from our goals.

That Scorpionic persistence serves us well in relation to our karmic path this afternoon as the Moon in Scorpio sextiles the North Node in Virgo, combining Scorpio’s talent for manifestation with Virgo’s attention to detail.  Scorpio is a highly spiritual sign with a greater capability for understanding the workings of our karma, so now we are likely to throw ourselves wholeheartedly into whatever activity will gain us the greatest progress on our karmic path, and whatever experiences will teach us the skills we need to express our souls’ truth.

Tonight the Moon in Scorpio opposes Mars in Taurus, intensifying our drive even further.  Mars is the classical ruler of Scorpio, with his influence on this day already heightened as a result of the trine between Mercury in Aries (the other side that Mars rules) and Black Moon Lilith.  That trine combined with tonight’s Moon/Mars opposition may well give an operatic note to our communications tonight, as both of these aspects amplify intensity.  Oppositions create awareness of the balance required to fully express the energies of both opposing forces.  In this case, the Moon in Scorpio has our emotions and instincts experiencing the force of Scorpionic intensity and spiritual depth, while Mars is expressing his force in the material and bodily realms.  Our sexual drive in particular may be increased at this time, as well as our ambition and aggression, and tempers may flare tonight as a result.  Those of us who are able to navigate these realms successfully may find our personal magnetism and our ability to influence others increased, but overt power plays are not likely to fare well at this time – a balance must be found between the bluntness of Mars in Taurus and the subtlety of the Moon in Scorpio, or we may find ourselves see-sawing between our ideals and our baser desires.  This is a good night for the arts, theatre and performing arts especially, but also any activities favoring sensual enjoyment, especially those that combine sensory experience with spiritual and emotional insight.  Regardless of venue, we are driven to seek powerful experiences tonight, and whatever may happen, it is likely to be memorable.

Astrology Update, March 14th, 2017: Healing Crisis

We are still experiencing the effects of the Mars/North Node trine giving impetus to our growth on our karmic paths today, and the ongoing theme of letting go of old, painful patterns is revisited with the Sun conjuncting Chiron in Pisces this morning, with the effects of this conjunction lasting throughout the day.  Since Pisces governs the 12th house with it’s attendant themes of death, sorrow, self-defeat, and confinement, these are the themes we may find ourselves confronting today, along with illness and trauma, both personal and intergenerational.  Navigating this transit takes extra doses of kindness and compassion, as well as intuition – our consciousness today is less a thinking consciousness and more of a feeling consciousness, and seeing the patterns that have led us to this point and what we need to do to change them is likely to require that we surrender ourselves to the experience rather than fighting our way through it.  Today especially we may find things getting worse before they get better, experiencing what is known in holistic health parlance as a “healing crisis.”  On the plus side, there is the potential for real progress in the midst of so much pain.  We may spend more time than we would like today feeling sorry for ourselves, but also may find ourselves connecting to others around us through shared pain and sadness.  Learning about subjects related to healing is favored today, as is recognizing that we may be able to do more to help others than we can for ourselves right now.

Toward mid-day today the Moon in Libra squared Pluto in Capricorn, putting our efforts to connect with others in the shadow of institutional powers and other forces larger than ourselves.  Pluto deals with deep transformation, including death and endings, so the Sun/Chiron conjunction’s emphasis on endings and sacrifice may have been heightened during this time, and we may have struggled with our equilibrium as a result.  Relationships may have been challenged either by control issues within those relationships or forces out of control of all parties concerned.  We may also have found our ability to work hampered by social issues, diplomatic wrangling, or unusually disruptive environments.

All of this set the stage for this afternoon’s conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter in Libra, amplifying our emotional responses and reaffirming our faith in our social connections.  Particularly when faced with the powers that be putting a monkey wrench in our peace and harmony, sometimes our friends and loved ones are the best medicine, or even social connections we never expected to prove so soothing.  Keep in mind that sometimes it takes disruption of our relationships and environments to show us how reliant we are on them, so this has not necessarily been an easy time, and we may find ourselves a bit emotionally raw and unsettled as a result.  Nonetheless, this time has been a reminder that we truly need our social connections and partnerships, not out of weakness or some flaw in our character, but rather because we are social creatures who are greater together than apart.  Since Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, this Moon/Jupiter conjunction is likely to have had lessons that are pertinent to the Sun/Chiron conjunction, giving us a boost of Jovian optimism and faith when we need it most.

Tonight the Moon in Libra opposes Uranus in Aries, taking that sense of social connection and confronting our need for personal freedom.  Since oppositions promote awareness, and the Moon/Jupiter conjunction followed by the Moon/Uranus opposition plugs into the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition, tonight is a time of heightened awareness of the balancing act between what we want for ourselves and what we want for our personal relationships and our society.  Uranus brings with it sudden change and disruption, and in opposition to the Moon can have our moods experiencing drastic fluctuations that may leave us shaken and even exhausted by the end.  Particularly against the backdrop of both ongoing social changes and the personal changes that are being emphasized by both Uranus in Aries and today’s Sun/Chiron conjunction, we may find our nerves frayed at this time, and our health tested even more as a result.  Sleep may be long in coming with this aspect, so we would do well to be gentle with ourselves and others at this time.  The Sun/Chiron conjunction does heighten the potential for wisdom attained through dreams, so when sleep does come, it is likely to be a welcome balm at the end of a trying day, and worth noting any messages attained come morning.
