Astrology Update, April 16th, 2017: Connecting Wisdom and Growth

Today the Moon in Sagittarius got things started with this morning’s trine to Uranus in Aries, setting a speedy tone for the day with the Moon’s unconscious urge toward action and liveliness joining forces with Uranus’ will to sudden change and impulsiveness.  Since this was a harmonious aspect, this boost in activity was likely to be benevolent whether we rode along with it or simply observed the action from the sidelines, but it wasn’t likely to make for a boring time either way.

Shortly afterward, Mars in Taurus sextiled Chiron in Pisces, lending a practical energy to our learning and our understanding of our own weaknesses and limitations while bringing compassion and wisdom to our actions.  Today we are likely to have had more sympathy for illness and more active interest in matters of health.  We are also likely to be more persistent about getting to the roots of health problems or resolving paradoxes, and alternative health fields of study are favored at this time.

Later this morning the Moon in Sagittarius squares Chiron in Pisces, challenging this exploration of our patterns of health and injury with emotional and instinctive reactions that would rather have fun and not examine such potentially depressing patterns too closely.  We may have found ourselves feeling impatient with our own limitations or those of others this morning, or may have found that the truth of our situation when it comes to our health and our psychological sensitivities bumps up against deeply ingrained beliefs, particularly those shared with families and other groups.  We may have felt highly attuned to the tensions at the intersection of what we feel in relation to our health and the patterns of belief shared with others, and may have found those tensions coming to a head today.

A short while later the Moon in Sagittarius trined the Sun in Aries, renewing some of the lively energy from the early morning and putting our conscious and unconscious selves in harmony.  Our instinctive reactions worked along our conscious intentions today, making it easier for us to do what we truly wanted, and helping us to disseminate the intentions that we set at the New Moon and brought to their peak at the Full Moon.  Since both Luminaries are operating in fiery signs, this was definitely a time best devoted to action and creative, spirited endeavors.

However, a few minutes later the Moon in Sagittarius squared Venus in Pisces, and our emotions and instincts bumped up against our desire for connection and pleasure.  We may have wanted to take action but found ourselves enmeshed in lazier desires, feeling simultaneously energetic yet also slow and sensual.  We may have sensed a need to take connections slowly, yet found our instinctive responses to be too rushed, our timing off.

Around mid-day, the Moon conjuncted Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, and our mood may have turned more somber as a result, though not unbearably so.  Rather, we were likely to have seen where we needed to respect our limitations and those of others, and may have found ourselves more willing to shoulder responsibilities even in the midst of fun.  We may have also found ourselves more emotionally invested in our beliefs, particularly those that define us as part of a group, and were more likely to assert our emotional and philosophical boundaries at this time.

This aspect started a lunar void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, during which we were best off falling back on routine and allowing our unconscious to float in a state of receptivity, quietly processing the lessons of the Moon’s transit through Sagittarius before the Moon entered Capricorn early this evening, and since Saturn is Capricorn’s ruler, the Moon/Saturn conjunction that began this void-of-course aptly paved the way for us to react and feel with more seriousness and determination.

During this void-of-course period, Venus in Pisces conjuncts Chiron in Pisces, putting our affections in touch with our deepest hurts and those of others.  Since Venus is slower moving than the Moon, this influence sticks with us for a while, lingering into tomorrow.  This has us moving forward with the knowledge gained from Venus’ retrograde period of introspection, connecting with others through shared sympathy and compassion for each others’ hurts.  The wisdom that we have gained through painful learning experiences may seem like it can’t much help us, but it can be a great solace and aid to others now enduring similar situations.  The sharing of such wisdom then becomes a source of deeper connections between us.  Since Pisces is eldest sign, we may be again confronted by what we need to let go of in order to have the caring and wise connections that we most desire.  These connections can take on spiritual overtones, and during this transit we are more likely to see how they can have long-term impact on our lives and the lives of others around us.

The Moon’s entry into Capricorn tonight takes the seriousness of Saturn in Sagittarius and applies it to our most important goals, from the unconscious point of view.  If what we want consciously differs greatly from what we want consciously, that can pose some problems, but the Moon/Sun trine earlier today brought our conscious and unconscious desires into alignment, so chances are that what we get emotionally serious about during this transit will resonate on both conscious and unconscious levels.  Capricorn embodies determination, so we may find ourselves becoming more focused in our reactions during the next couple of days, less easily deterred from what we want.  We are likely to assert more persistence now, particularly in relation to our long-term goals, especially those focused on career and reputation, but really during this transit what matters most is what our hearts align with – nothing else will muster the same fervent devotion, and that heart alignment isn’t likely to be a matter of gushy love and flowers but rather what speaks deeply to our core being and our ancestral pride.  Capricorn is deeply traditional and the Moon is instinctual, so our emotions and reactions during this time will come straight from our roots.

More of that old soul feeling came tonight through the sextile of Venus in Pisces to Mars in Taurus, which is also in effect through tomorrow, and brings along with it a kindly and comfortable feeling that enhances sensual and sexual connections, and helps to keep our energy levels at a steady, even flow.  During this aspect our sympathies have more fortitude, our actions more kindness, and our appreciation of and desire for creature comforts, preferably shared with those who touch us on a spiritual level as well as practical and physical levels. We are likely to be a bit gentler with each other during this transit, yet not pushovers, as our compassion is balanced by our practicality.

A short while later tonight the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing more of that practicality into play but now applying it to what our souls most need.  Our ability to work with and resolve our karmic lessons gained the attentiveness and persistence of Capricorn, who is ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Karma, and the self-discipline associated with him has now come through on an instinctive level, our feelings attuned to whatever will most serve our souls’ needs tonight.  Shortly thereafter the Moon in Capricorn trines Mercury in Taurus, forming a Grand Earth Trine that pulls in our steady and practical mental capabilities into the circuit created with the North Node.  Our minds and emotions are put in harmony by the aspect, and working united with our souls’ learning process due to the configuration with the North Node, tapping into cardinal, fixed, and mutable earth energies simultaneously, and channeling the power of all three into what most needs doing in our lives.  This is a time when we can make incredible progress in our souls’ growth, putting the formidable power of our most practical thoughts and instincts to bear on working through our karma and living up to our souls’ purpose in this lifetime and those yet to come.

Astrology Update, April 15th, 2017: Sensitive Connections

The big astrological happening of the day is this morning’s station of Venus direct in Pisces, giving us some direct motion in our affections and pleasures after weeks of retrograde motion coming to a head in this past week’s cluster of four planets in retrograde.  Venus has spent the past six weeks retracing her steps through Aries and then Pisces, encouraging us to reconsider how we experience and express our connections with others, from the more boisterous and action-oriented side of our affections in Aries to the more compassionate and subtle side of our affections in Pisces.  Today’s station emphasizes Venusian themes of love, connection, pleasure, affection, self-image, and what we value, all with the Piscean tones of sympathy, compassion, spirituality, intuition, sensuality, universality, and blurring of boundaries.  Since Pisces is a mutable sign, Venus here is flexible, mobile, willing to see multiple sides of a story and able to work within paradox, understanding the full spectrum within what others can only see as polarities.  Our affections under this influence are likely to be more gentle and kindly, and while Pisces does have a degree of reserve, today’s station can bring out the more social side of the fishes, and perhaps a more playful side as well.  Even so, we may find the pace of what we take pleasure in today to be more on the slow and quiet side as we are still finding our sea legs coming out of the retrograde.

Later this morning the Moon in Sagittarius squared Neptune in Pisces, warning that however fun and fanciful our affections might feel today, we would do well not to get too caught up in our fantasies now, as the Moon squaring Neptune tends to lead us astray into more escapist realms.  In this case, the Moon in Sagittarius is instinctively in search of social fun and broader horizons, but Neptune in Pisces emphasizes mystery and sensual connection rather than Sagittarius’ clarity and righteousness, and what might first seem like common ideals connecting the two can turn into confusion and even deception.  So, this morning is likely to have gotten off to a confusing start, with a wrong turn or two along the way.

Our emotions and instincts got a more pleasant and supportive touch this afternoon with a sextile between the Moon in Sagittarius and that sign’s ruler Jupiter retrograde in Libra, emphasizing thoughtful conviviality and a willingness to see different points of view.  Spiritual gatherings can be enlivened this aspect, as well as those emphasizing philosophy and higher education, and this can be a good time for study as long as the subject matter is interesting and helps to broaden our horizons, particularly social subjects such as anthropology, art history, and cosmology.  Those of us in sales and other socially-oriented professions can get a boost from this aspect, as it increases the optimism necessary to do well in those fields.  We are also likely to find our aesthetic sensibilities more stimulated now, and can take greater interest in performing and visual arts during this time.

The rest of the evening has no significant astrological activity, just the ongoing instinct toward fun and higher thought emphasized by the Sagittarian Moon and the residual effects of the recent Sun/Uranus conjunction keeping us from getting too settled in.  Given that we have a flurry of astrological activity headed our way tomorrow, a little quiet with today’s Venus station is just as well.

Astrology Update, April 14th, 2017: Truth in the Pattern

Today started with the Moon void-of-course in Scorpio, adrift in the dark, watery, receptive state of the feminine unconscious, absorbing the last of the lessons of this lunar transit before the Moon entered Sagittarius in the early morning hours.

The Moon in Sagittarius marks a more emotionally active and expansive period, when our instincts are more generous and our immediate responses more philosophical and broad-minded.  Our tempers may be shorter now, our moods more volatile, but we are also more forgiving and adaptable, more interested in different points of view.  During this time we may find ourselves requiring more space, unconsciously still resonating with the urge toward freedom ignited in us with last night’s Sun/Uranus conjunction.  We are less likely to hide our truth now, speaking more forthrightly and acting more boldly, and we are far less reserved, but we also respond with more lightness than during the Moon’s Scorpio transit – our emotions are brighter and more mobile now, and our instinctive reactions less pointed.

This morning saw the Moon in Sagittarius squaring the North Node in Virgo, helping us to learn how the details we must attend to in fulfilling our souls’ purpose live up to our ideals, and where they fall short.  Any health challenges that we are experiencing may affect our ability to learn and connect on higher levels, or may limit the distance we can traverse in our pursuit of learning.  New skills may take longer to acquire than previously anticipated, or require more steps and a broader viewpoint.  We may want to take the longer view but get bogged down in details and process, but may also gain valuable insight about our relationship with details versus the bigger picture.

The skies are relatively quiet through the midday and afternoon, with the lone aspect of the evening being the conjunction of the Moon in Sagittarius with Black Moon Lilith, bringing two representatives of the unconscious feminine together as a fiery bookend to the day’s unconscious feminine start in the watery Scorpio void-of-course.  When these two get together the unconscious exerts a greater force on our lives, yet also has a greater potential for unconscious wisdom to become conscious, as Black Moon Lilith traverses the space between the Moon and the Sun, the unconscious and the conscious.  The experiences that we give ourselves most wholly to during this time will be those that have the best potential to yield insights from the unconscious to inform, stimulate, and expand our conscious selves.  This is a passionate conjunction, an extra sense of aliveness in what we do and how we feel, a vitality that can help us more forward into the larger pattern.

Astrology Update, March 20th, 2017: Spring Equinox

A Blessed Equinox to you all!  The Sun entered Aries this morning, making this the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  Aries is considered the youngest sign of the zodiac, the sign of newness and wonder and adventure, the sign of both the archetypal fool and hero.  The Sun in Aries brings with it a bolder attitude and a desire to make one’s mark on the world.  As the sap quickens in the trees in spring, so too does our blood quicken and stir us to action, to match the lengthening light with more liveliness and enthusiasm of our own.  We are likely to be more focused now, more driven and ambitious, and far less likely to give up on what matters to us.  With that drive and ambition may also come more aggression, and our tempers are likely to be shorter, but thankfully anger at this time isn’t just quick to flare – it’s also quick to die out, as there are newer and better things on the horizon to catch our interest, and grudges don’t last under this influence.  How can they when we are waking up with the world around us, coming alive after winter’s sleep?  This is a great time to focus on physical fitness, self-improvement, new projects, and getting outside for a breath of spring air.

Of course, the Moon in Sagittarius just had to conjunct Saturn right after the Sun entered Aries early this morning, so those of us awake at that hour probably were feeling more grumpy than enthusiastic, as Saturn in hard aspect with the Moon tends to turn our emotions serious and even depressive, and at that hour especially is either reminding us of all that we have to get done in the morning or making us want to roll over and get a few more hours of sleep.  Since that aspect started a void-of-course period for a few hours, chances are that we weren’t feeling our sharpest either, so sticking to routine was the best fallback position this morning, at least in the early morning hours.

Later this morning the Moon entered Capricorn, turning our emotions and instincts toward more practical matters, and giving us a greater degree of steadfastness and drive.  Capricorn is a sign known for its dedication and determination, and with the Moon in this sign we can seem more stoic and aloof while simultaneously being more devoted to whatever goal we have set our hearts on, even to the point of fanaticism.  We feel a greater sense of seriousness and responsibility during this transit, as Capricorn’s ruler is Saturn, the Lord of Karma who foreshadowed this transit with that conjunction earlier this morning, and who eternally reminds us of our limitations and insecurities, not simply to be a downer but rather to inspire in us the self-discipline to push through our fears and whatever obstacles we may face.  Capricorn is known for patience and perseverance, and with the Moon in this sign we may feel like we are facing mountains but will be thoroughly ready to climb them for as long as it takes to reach the top.

That patience was tested right out of the gate as within a few minutes of entering Capricorn the Moon squared the Sun in Aries, increasing our frustration and impatience and likely setting tempers flaring.  This Last Quarter Moon is a time of breaking down the final barriers in releasing the intentions we set at the New Moon and brought into bloom at the Full Moon, and sets the stage for us to fully let go of that which no longer serves us as we prepare to go into the darkness of the New Moon and plant new seeds in the psychic soil.  Our consciousness in Aries and our unconsciousness in Capricorn clash only in method, not in drive.  The Ram and the Goat are both creatures with horns, after all, equally stubborn.  If we can recognize that sense of kinship between our desires and see that there is a time and place for both our patience and our time to run wild, then this aspect can prepare us to become a truly unstoppable force.

That force may be well-utilized this afternoon as the Moon in Capricorn trines the North Node in Virgo, bringing our dedication to bear on the goals most crucial on our karmic path, and drawing to us the experiences we need to fulfill our souls’ deepest needs.  While the Sun in Aries may be calling us to behave more brashly, still our patient and responsible instincts are aligning with our souls’ purpose and giving us the persistence to work through all of the little details necessary to our growth.  This is a time to improve our health, learn new skills or hone old ones, and perfect our process.  We are not likely to tolerate half-measures now, and will focus on getting things right, for however long it takes.  Work that requires attention to detail is favored now, particularly scientific work, teaching, writing and communication, and gardening or landscaping.

Very late tonight the Moon in Capricorn squares Venus retrograde in Aries, setting our steady and responsible instincts and emotions against an already uncertain and frustrated sense of connection.  Venus in Aries wants to take an active role in interacting with others, but in retrograde finds herself reassessing how we are connect with each other, what we take pleasure in, and whether our affections are really true to who we are and what we really desire, and so there is a hesitancy or restlessness and even discontent with our ability to be with others and enjoy ourselves together now.  That hesitancy is exacerbated by the Capricorn Moon, which is reserved and not terribly good at giving the attention and feedback that the Aries Venus is craving.  The Capricorn Moon is serious while the Aries Venus wants fun but isn’t sure she knows how to get it.  This is all one big recipe for frustration and the potential for hurt feelings is high.  That said, the challenges presented by this aspect can be useful in reminding us that sometimes we need to get out of our shells a bit more, and at the same time what we really want may not be something that will come to us immediately.  Human emotion and interaction can be complicated, and both of these signs want to make it simple.  Yet real affection and connection isn’t just a flash in the pan and takes time to cultivate, and sometimes we need to look past our own desires to really see and understand the people around us and learn what it is that draws us to them and brings their affection to us in return.

Astrology Update, March 19th, 2017: Exploring the Big Picture

Today’s notable astrological alignments started this afternoon with the Moon in Sagittarius sextiling Jupiter in Libra, aligning our emotions and instincts with our faith in our relationships and desire for social harmony.  This afternoon and early evening is a time to enjoy feelings of optimism and expanding our understanding of our world, broadening our horizons and seeking new people and new experiences, enjoying differing viewpoints and opinions.  It is a time for light-hearted fun, since neither of these two signs are interested in delving too deeply, especially when joining forces together, preferring to create an atmosphere of conviviality, skimming surfaces like dragonflies in the sun.

The tendency to flit from one object of interest to another is heightened this evening as the Moon in Sagittarius trines Uranus in Aries, urging us toward a greater sense of freedom and possibility.  We are drawn to the unusual now, seeking to push our boundaries ever further, and especially interested in the future.  Science and technology join forces with our philosophies now, and we are far more likely to accept ideas that at other times might have seemed too far out to believe.  This is a great time for trying out new technology and new systems, inventing things that are useful on both personal and societal levels, and communicating about new ideas with others.

This combination of harmonious aspects between the Moon and both Jupiter and Uranus reinforces the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition that I have discussed off and on since the winter holidays, an aspect that is still in orb but slowly separating, though it will revisit us again in September.  This opposition has been drawing our awareness to the balancing act between the need for personal freedom and our faith in our relationships and social order.  With the Moon acting as the mediating agent in this dynamic today, our emotions and instincts have Sagittarian broad-mindedness showing us a greater level of possibility in making this balancing act work, helping us to see how what we are most interested in on a personal level can integrate with what will most help our relationships and our society.  We are encouraged to see and explore the larger patterns in our lives now, to take an active and hopeful interest in the ideas and beliefs that connect us while maintaining our sense of wonder and the explorations that we find most personally fulfilling.

Late tonight the beliefs and ideas that we have been exploring with this lunar transit in Sagittarius are challenged by the more painful patterns in our histories, both personal and more universal, as the Moon in Sagittarius squares Chiron in Pisces.  Chiron shows us our deepest wounds, the places where we feel hard-pressed to heal and where our experiences with our own pain can help others in the ways that we struggle to help ourselves.  Our emotions may still be caught up in the sense of fun and exploration that have coloured the afternoon and evening, but in confronting Chiron in Pisces now find themselves uncomfortably close to patterns of injury that are far-reaching and may seem impossible to remedy.  We can find ourselves feeling victimized now, or under-appreciated, and what insight we have on the subject may fall on deaf ears.  Belief systems that seemed capable of integration this afternoon may now seem closed, unable to stop hurtful patterns of behavior that reverberate through generations and past personal and family boundaries.  This is a disquieting aspect, but there is wisdom to be gleaned here if we are willing to be patient, to sit with and observe what is hurting both ourselves and others in these patterns, and recognize that healing won’t come overnight.
