Astrology Update, March 30th, 2017: Faith and Power

This morning started with a lovely sextile from the Moon in Taurus to Neptune in Pisces, giving our instincts and emotions the benefit of Neptune’s fantasy glow while still staying firmly rooted in the practicality of Taurus.  This influence helped us to feel stable but sympathetic, compassionate yet nobody’s fool, and gave us the benefit of a more universal vision while still allowing us to give equal attention to our personal concerns in the material plane.  This was a great influence for creativity and intuition, and a good foot to start off on before facing the challenges the sky has for us as the day progresses.

Later this morning the Moon in Taurus conjuncted Mars in Taurus, and that may have led to more aggressive feelings and potential frustrations.  Mars in Taurus has practical ambitions and power-house drive, but the Moon is about seasons, cycles, and fluctuations.  Though Mars is likely to be more patient in the sign of Taurus than elsewhere, still Mars wants what Mars wants, and waiting on moods isn’t Mars’ preferred agenda.  The Moon is instinctive and emotional, and being inherently watery is likely to soak up whatever sauce the planet it conjuncts has been stewing in.  Given Taurus’ sensory predilections and material ambitions, that makes us likely to have spent this morning feeling driven in relation to obtaining material comforts, but also more inclined to break diets and indulge our creature comforts, and less inclined to move overall unless that movement was required to obtain something we really wanted.

Toward mid-day the pressure that has been building for the past few days finally hits its peak with the exact square between Jupiter in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn.  This influence will continue to linger for days after this, but now is when its intensity is highest.  Jupiter’s transit through Libra has had us experiencing a greater awareness of our relationships and our desire for social harmony, as well as our faith and our luck in these areas, which we have been reassessing during Jupiter’s current retrograde.  Pluto’s transit through Capricorn has brought to light the hidden workings of power in our social hierarchies and our livelihoods, and how governments, corporations, and other institutions seek to maintain control in the face of deeply transformative forces at work on a grand scale.  These two are now clashing, testing our faith and optimism in relation to the survival of our social structures and our ability to persevere under the aegis of the current powers-that-be.  Both our personal relationships and our social relationships are likely to be tested in the process, as well as our own capacity for weathering the changes in our lives.  Many of us have been undergoing deep transformations during the Pluto transit through Capricorn in relation to the institutions in our lives thanks to the series of squares between Pluto and Uranus between 2012 and 2016, and then we have experienced our relationships and faith in society being tested by the ongoing series of oppositions between Jupiter and Uranus heightening our awareness of how those relationships and society come up against our own personal needs for freedom and self-actualization.

Today’s square combines lessons from both of those periods, magnifying the conflict between our shared visions of a peaceful society and beneficial partnerships versus institutional power and hidden forces grasping for control of our lives.  On the personal level, we may find ourselves struggling with power in the big, impersonal realms of our lives – governments, hospitals, law enforcement, and organized crime all are emphasized under this influence.  Pluto governs the inevitabilities of death and taxes, as well as transformational forces like life-threatening illness.  Jupiter magnifies whatever he touches, making our encounters with these forces seem larger-than-life and with potentially far-reaching consequences.  Particularly for those of us with Sun, Moon, or personal planets in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), we can feel like we are caught between a rock and a hard place now, having our very identities ground away by forces beyond our control.  Because these are slow-moving generational planets, we will continue to feel the effects of this square over the next couple of weeks, with the impact on our lives likely to be felt for much longer.  Pluto governs the kind of change that remakes us from the ground up.  This transit can reveal secrets with the impact to shake both our relationships and our society to their very foundations.  There are no quick and easy solutions for coping with this environment, and since Jupiter is involved our ability to be optimistic is deeply challenged by this – for many of us this transit marks a “Dark Night of the Soul” that shakes our faith to its very core.  The one silver lining in all of this is that those of us who make it through this transit intact (on top of all of the related transits previously mentioned) may emerge with an unmatched understanding of the workings of both power and faith, having found a way to integrate the two in the midst of great tumult.

This evening the Moon gives us an emotional lifeline for navigating our experiences during this Jupiter/Pluto square, as the Moon in Taurus trines Pluto in Capricorn, adding power to our emotions while Taurus’ steadying influence helps us to navigate the ongoing process of structural transformation.  We may feel the need to stick to our own goals during this time more strongly as a result, gaining a renewed sense of determination despite whatever power struggles we are experiencing.  We may fall back on our material comforts at this time, or our creativity and our ability to appreciate art and beauty may become the grounding forces that help us to keep our heads up and our sense of purpose clear.  Though we are undergoing some trying times, still this is a beautiful planet with much to remind us of why life is worth living, and the Moon/Pluto trine may well give us both that reminder and the fortitude to persevere.

Astrology Update, March 29th, 2017: Bright and Growing

This morning the Moon in Aries kicked off the day with a conjunction to Mercury in Aries, followed shortly by a trine to Saturn in Sagittarius, starting our morning with our thoughts and feelings both identifying with each other, merging together in pursuit of the fresh and exciting, yet having steady discipline and patience tempering what we feel thanks to Saturn.  Aries is bold and adventurous and action oriented, so we may have found ourselves extra lively and alert this morning even if we aren’t normally so at that hour, with minds and feelings both bright and active, but Saturn’s sense of timing kept us from being too impulsive and though the Moon in combination with Saturn tends to increase seriousness, the flow and ease of the trine aspect kept Saturn’s influence from becoming too heavy.  Since the Moon turned void-of-course with the trine to Saturn, we were best off sticking to routine for a few more hours and not getting too caught up in pursuit of the new while the morning was still young.

A few hours later the Moon entered Taurus, giving some grounding to our feelings that have been all fired up and impetuous for the past few days.  Taurus is deeply practical and concerned with matters in the material world, preferring creature comforts to the heroic desires of Aries, and slows the pace of our feelings and instincts to something more steady and stable.  Taurus is ruled by Venus, so our instincts now are to seek out that which we find comfortable and pleasurable.  Diets tend to be more difficult to maintain under a Taurus Moon, as this sign is notoriously fond of its food, and exercise routines may suffer as well.  The best way to counter that tendency is to make both diets and exercise as pleasurable as possible, and as close to habit as possible, as Taurus tends to be change-averse.  Taurus likes structure and routine, and is good at giving us the persistence to stick to something, especially when that something leads to greater structure!  Taurus wants things to be stable and secure, especially when it comes to financial matters, so a Taurean Moon is a great time to tend to such things.  This is the time when our instincts are best utilized for getting the bills paid, making our homes more comfortable, and beautifying our environments, as Taurus’ ruler Venus gives this sign a high appreciation for art.  This is a great time for making things, whether artistic or not, especially building and repairing things about the home.

Toward midday Mercury in Aries trines Saturn in Sagittarius, carrying forward the energy and liveliness of this morning’s Moon/Mercury conjunction and Moon/Saturn trine with the benefit of the more stable Taurean Moon.  Our thoughts may turn serious but not negatively so – this is the kind of seriousness that encourages self-discipline and mindfulness of how to work through challenges and around obstacles to get what we want.  Mercury in this aspect retains the Aries drive to achieve but gains the perspective of Saturn showing us what limitations and restrictions we need to overcome, while Saturn gains the benefit of Aries brightness and optimism keeping our understanding of our limitations from weighing us down or depressing us.  Mercury in Aries can also help us bring new ideas to bear on our old beliefs, helping us to get out of some of the spiritual and philosophical ruts that Saturn has been expressing during his transit of Sagittarius.  Now we have boldness of thought and insight into what needs to be done to improve our mental landscape and our lives along with it, and the seriousness to attend to it, and at the same time a measure of excitement to lift us up in the process of dealing with otherwise sobering matters.  In combination with the Taurus Moon, this is the perfect time to work on solving “real world” problems that are fed by belief patterns, tackling issues that even a day ago would have seemed too big or too difficult.  And since this is a planetary aspect we can expect this influence to extend into tomorrow, giving us a boost of ambition and zeal to make things happen.

This afternoon we get an additional bit of celestial help in making practical progress through the Moon in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, giving our materially-oriented instincts the help of the North Node’s drive to tend to the details that matter most to our souls.  In many “spiritual” circles, there has all too often been a tendency to divide the spiritual and the practical, but with the North Node in earthy Virgo we have been experiencing the necessity of understanding that our souls are in a material world, and fulfilling our souls’ purposes here requires mindfulness of the material in combination with the spiritual.  Today’s Moon/North Node trine gives us a boost in tending to the material matters that can affect our souls’ journey, and in combination with the Mercury/Saturn trine, this afternoon has the potential to enhance our understanding of and working through both spiritual and material matters simultaneously.  Gardens can benefit especially from this influence, as well as health concerns, and this is a great time to exercise our creative capabilities.  Sometimes the cosmic cycles give us something lovely to work with, and this afternoon is just such a time to enjoy.

Astrology Update, March 3rd, 2017: Comforting Habits

Today is fairly quiet in the wake of yesterday’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition, which is just as well, given tomorrow’s impending Venus station as she prepares to turn retrograde.  Combined with Mercury conjuncting Neptune tomorrow, Venus and the Moon will give us more than enough to keep ourselves busy with, so the relative quiet today is a good time to batten down the hatches in between the figurative storms.

This morning the Moon in Taurus trines Pluto in Capricorn, simultaneously beginning a lengthy void-of-course period that lasts for the rest of the day and into the night.  The Moon in Taurus is practical and sensory, concerned with material security and creature comforts, encouraging us to move slowly and steadily through the day while tending to the necessities of life.  Pluto in Capricorn is transformative and driven to succeed, and in combination with the Taurean Moon helps us to find our power in a very practical sense.  Now is a time to work within our daily routines on matters related to finances, career, and physical well-being.  The void-of-course period is not conducive to starting new endeavors or making bold, out-of-the-box moves, especially not under the conservative, earthy influence of this trine.  It is a good time for correcting errors, tweaking systems, refining processes, and pruning away what is out-of-place or no longer needed.  The void-of-course Moon tends to give a dreamy quality to the day, but with the very grounded nature of the Moon in Taurus being amplified by the power and depth of Pluto in Capricorn, I suspect today’s void-of-course period will be less absent-minded and more of the variety that loses itself in work and practical tasks in a steady push to get things done before the weekend, processing the week’s events subconsciously in the meditative state created by immersing ourselves in the habitual.

This introspective time of the void-of-course Moon gains the additional benefit of helping us to process old hurts and understand the struggles we share with others, thanks to the Moon in Taurus sextiling Chiron in Pisces early this evening.  This is especially conducive to commiserating with co-workers and friends over a pint after work, or sharing good conversation with friends at home or at a regular gathering place nearby.  The void-of-course period is not suited for trying new places and meeting new people, but it’s great for camaraderie in familiar haunts, and with the added sympathy of the Moon/Chiron sextile heightening our sense of connection and compassion in relation to practical matters, it’s a good time to share a meal or other sensory comforts with those close to us, fortifying ourselves with mutual enjoyment of what we have in common.

Astrology Update, March 2nd, 2017: Imaginative Balance

The Moon’s influence today is consistently benevolent, which is a blessing after the uproar of yesterday.  Still, we are laboring through the lingering fog of yesterday’s Sun/Neptune conjunction, and this evening sees the second of three exact oppositions from Jupiter to Uranus making a recipe for bedlam despite the Taurus Moon’s steadying touch.

This morning at least things started off decently enough, with the Moon in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, aligning our emotions and instincts with our sense of purpose, helping us to tend to the necessary details along our karmic path, learning new skills and being mindful of the process in our growth while responding to our circumstances with a practical attitude grounded in real life and strong sensory impressions.  This is a great environment for getting things done!

This afternoon the Moon sextiles Mercury in Pisces, bringing a more imaginative flavor to what we feel while steadying our minds and communication so that our imaginations don’t run away with us.  This is a perfect time to take creative inspiration and make good use of it in the real world, as our instincts now are thoroughly practical yet capable of seeing the usefulness in what we can dream up.  Our attitudes and communication are likely to be tolerant and compassionate now, making it easier to work with others during this time, though under this influence we can work just as well alone, enjoying some quiet introspection and the practical results it may bring.

The big astrological news of today is the opposition from Jupiter in Libra to Uranus in Aries early this evening.  I’ve talked about this aplenty as an ongoing influence stretching from the winter holidays through until September.  This is the second of three exact oppositions between Jupiter and Uranus, resulting from Jupiter’s current retrograde through Libra that has us reconsidering our beliefs in connection with relationships and social harmony, as well as reviewing and revising our attitudes regarding good fortune and luck, and what creates abundance in our lives.  Uranus opposing Jupiter today creates sudden shake-ups in our attitudes surrounding these areas of our lives, and reminds us that success is meaningless without the freedom to enjoy it.  Uranus in Aries is all about independence, as well as progress, new technologies, and the flashes of insight that lead us into the future.  Uranus is a revolutionary that will not be satisfied by maintaining the status quo, and in connection with Jupiter can lead to unusual twists and turns in our fortunes.  Out-of-the-box thinking is magnified today, and with Mercury in Pisces could well take an imaginative turn – keep in mind that Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, so what affects Jupiter affects the sign and the planets in it, including the Sun and Neptune and the residual effects of yesterday’s conjunction.  Jupiter in Libra seeks good fortune in connections, while Uranus in Aries opposing him reminds us not to get too cozy in our efforts at diplomacy, lest we forget ourselves in the name of keeping the peace.  Since Jupiter does affect wealth, we would also do well to be mindful of our finances at this time – we could see sudden expenses popping up now, and we should be careful about impulse buys.

This evening sees the Moon in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces, heightening the imaginative quality of the evening and increasing our desire for some self-indulgent escapism.  Luckily this is a harmonious aspect, steadying our escapist tendencies with Taurean practicality and softening the Taurus Moon’s bluntness with Neptunian spirituality and Piscean compassion.  Taurus is ruled by sensual Venus and Pisces is both sensual and connective, while the Moon/Neptune sextile turns our emotions and instincts romantic, so this may be a time to soften the edges of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition’s effects on our relationships with a more intimate perspective.

Later tonight the Moon in Taurus sextiles the Sun in Pisces, heightening the connection between these two signs and the sensual affection that their combination inspires.  These harmonious and connective aspects coming on the heels of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition suggest that whatever changes this opposition brings to our attitudes regarding the balance between self and other have a strong potential to be integrated through shared enjoyment of connection within the physical world, and our practical feelings can be enhanced through compassion and intimacy as well.  Yes, our sense of stability can be shaken and our optimism come into question, but we can also find new ways to experience and express what is best in our relationships, and feel a sense of oneness that is informed by our diverse experiences.  Balancing the needs of the self and the collective may not be the easiest of tasks.  But under tonight’s Moon/Sun sextile it might get a bit easier.

Astrology of February 4th, 2017: In Search of Fun

Today, the astrological activity started very early, just shortly after midnight with a trine from the Moon in Taurus to Pluto in Capricorn, creating a flowing, harmonious relationship between our emotions and instincts and the transformations that we are experiencing in our material world.  On an unconscious level at least, we may feel less threatened by the changes that we are having to make because we feel more secure in what remains the same.  For the past couple of days, the Moon in Taurus has seduced us with food and comfort and stability, giving us a much-needed respite from the emotional roller-coaster many of us have been on over the last two weeks, and this trine with Pluto emphasized the results, giving us a greater capacity to meet the extreme and the intense in our lives head-on, knowing our own deep reserves of strength and capability.

Later this morning, the Moon in Taurus sextiled Chiron in Pisces, further emphasizing this sense of stable competence in facing the things that hurt us, helping us to work through the patterns of injuries that we’ve experienced so that we have a clearer understanding of our own vulnerabilities and how to shore ourselves up emotionally to keep from feeling victimized and downtrodden.  This aspect also gives us a great reserve of sympathy for others, so we should apply this feeling to helping others where we can, as this is an opportunity for people to connect with each other through their mutual experiences of suffering and help each other to heal in the process.

Later this afternoon, the Moon in Taurus trines Mercury in Capricorn, starting a void-of-course period that lasts until this evening.  The Moon/Mercury trine gives us the chance to express our feelings comfortably and to make practical plans, but since the void-of-course period is best suited to routine tasks and making corrections in our writing and our environment, this is a good time to apply the alignment between what we feel and what we think and say to finishing up practical tasks and communications that further our goals, rather than embarking on new projects.

This void-of-course period also includes an opposition from the Moon in Taurus to Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, bringing our unconscious awareness back to the intense and mysterious in our lives, and encouraging us to sort out what doesn’t belong and determine to what extent the things that we don’t want to look at may be influencing our feelings from the shadows.  Our instincts are drawn toward these things now, so whether we consciously want to see them or not, they will make themselves known to us.

Later tonight the Moon enters Gemini, making us experience our feelings more through communication and responsiveness to others.  This doesn’t necessarily make us clear the air with regard to our true feelings – under a Gemini Moon, emotion becomes more of an intellectual exercise, and we’re much more interested in talking about it than actually feeling it.  We want things to be fun and social, and all of our instincts are now directed toward that end.  Keep in mind that Gemini is also a bit amoral, mostly because Gemini encourages us to move so quickly that it’s hard to get too concerned with the actual impact of one’s actions under its influence.  Keep in mind that both Donald Trump and Mike Pence are Geminis, and now the frenetic pace of the past couple of weeks starts to make more sense.  Which makes the entry of the Moon into Gemini tonight a blessing, because we are now instinctually better equipped to handle whatever is coming down the pike over the next couple of days, at least in terms of how we feel about it and react to it.  Since Gemini’s ruler Mercury is in earthy, grounded Capricorn, that keeps us from getting too frenetic in the process, but also gives the surface-skimming quality of Gemini the potential to go just a bit deeper than usual, while still not getting too caught up in the details.  Keep in that as is always the case with the Moon’s entry into a new sign, those of us with the Sun in that sign are likely to find ourselves a bit more emotionally volatile than usual, as our conscious self (the Sun) becomes aligned and identified with what we feel and our knee-jerk reactions (the Moon).  This includes the President un-elect.  So, while we all have a greater capacity to keep up with the pace of current events, he is likely to make that pace even more frantic during this time.  Also, since Gemini is particularly interested in communications via technology, we can expect social media to be extra lively now.

On the plus side, the Moon in Gemini’s first act is to make a supportive sextile with Venus in Aries late tonight, ending the night on a social note with all the fire and zest of our pleasures and affections seeking active fulfillment.  Venus in Aries is not a shy and retiring lady, as she may have seemed last month in Pisces.  Our extroverted instincts are making an alliance with Venus tonight to get us what we want, and with our energies continuing their Mars-in-Aries-given boldness, tonight we are set upon making spring come early, no matter what a fat rodent in Pennsylvania has to say about it.  Mind you, since both Gemini and Aries operate very much in the now rather than being particularly concerned with the future, the connections that we make tonight aren’t likely to be long-lasting.  But given the battles ahead and all that we’ve endured thus far, a bit of devil-may-care fun for tonight may well be just the brief dose of energy we need to bolster us for a future that we don’t need to examine too closely until tomorrow.
