Astrology Update, Full Worm Moon in Virgo, March 1st, 2018: Turning the Soil

What intentions we have sown in the darkness of the New Moon now are fully revealed as the Sun’s light reveals the face of the Full Moon.  With the Sun in Pisces conjunct that sign’s transcendental ruler Neptune, and part of a stellium with Mercury, Venus, and Chiron in Pisces as well, our consciousness is fully steeped in intuition and empathy, unusually sympathetic to those less fortunate than ourselves but also more inclined to see with rose-coloured glasses, and thus more easily deceived by our own romanticized vision and the unscrupulous.  With the Moon opposite Neptune, glamor is in high-gear tonight but so is escapism, and with the Moon in communicative Virgo, theatre and movies are especially favored.

With Venus conjunct Mercury in Pisces and both of them trining Jupiter in Scorpio, the glamor and sociability are heightened even more, but with Mars in Sagittarius squaring Mercury and Venus, what we say and what we do may well not match up – we are likely to find ourselves challenged to walk our talk, especially where our ideals are concerned.  Since the Moon in Virgo brings out our most practical instincts and our perfectionism, we may struggle now with the dichotomy between our more selfless leanings and the realities that we bump up against in our desire to connect with and give to others.  Unfortunately, both Virgo and Pisces can have a tendency to play the victim, so we may find ourselves feeling taken advantage of now, whether or not this is actually the case, and may wind up bemoaning our fate more than usual now (or have to listen to others doing so!).  This Virgo Moon is ruled by Mercury, and both emboldened by the trine to Jupiter and embattled by the square to Mars, our minds and mouths may well find themselves biting off more than we can chew, especially if we let our imaginations run away with us, as that pile-up of planets and the Sun conjunct Neptune are wont to do.  It is especially important now to listen well and think before we speak, lest words that we intended to unite wind up dividing instead.

Pluto in Capricorn sextile Mercury can help to steady that imagination now, keeping our thoughts connected to our more practical goals and the structure they can provide, an anchor of determination in a sea of Piscean dreams.  Since the Virgo Moon is an earthy Moon, we are not rudderless in all of that water either.  Virgo is known for its attention to detail in pursuit of perfection, and its dedication to process and growth.  This Moon is known as the “Worm Moon” for its connection to the early spring return of earthworms to turn and renew the soil and feed the birds, and so now is a good time to pay close attention to what our bodies tell us, and tend to our health and nutrition.  Having Neptune conjunct the Sun and opposing the Moon can make it harder for us to clearly see the details that a Virgo Moon normally calls attention to, so it can be helpful now to use Virgoan habits like cleaning, cooking, and gardening as meditative aids, using their structure as a container for all of that Piscean overflow.  Spring cleaning and letting go of things that we no longer need is especially favored now, decluttering our lives in order to have room for our goals to flourish.

There is a monastic quality to the Virgo/Pisces axis that encourages simplifying the mundane life in order to strengthen the spiritual life, tending to the body in order to aid the soul – the original purpose of yoga.  While the Mercury/Venus trine to Jupiter can increase our self-indulgent qualities now, perhaps we would do well to luxuriate in simple things during this Full Moon.  That Jupiter trine in combination with Neptune in hard aspect to both Sun and Moon amplifies our spiritual yearnings now, as well as our faith and trust, despite the challenges of the Mars square, and literally walking the path may be the best way to see it more clearly.  This is a good time to recognize that both forest and trees are worth experiencing, both soil and sea, both in perfect detail and impressionistic blur.  What we choose to communicate about that experience and how we connect in the process may require extra care now, but for the sake of both temporary enjoyment and the longer course of our souls’ journey that care is well worth the time.

Astrology Update, April 7th, 2017: Questioning Faith

Today started with an early morning conjunction between the Moon in Virgo and the North Node in Virgo, aligning our feelings and instincts with our karmic path and life purpose.  Since not many of us in the Western Hemisphere were awake at that hour and the Moon governs the unconscious, we may have found our dreams imparting clues to our direction during this time, but for those who were actually awake then we may have found ourselves more detail-focused and oriented toward our own growth and health, whether still awake from the night before or just waking up and getting ready to face the day.  Our minds may have been sharper during this time and our focus more practical, applying reason and discernment to practical actions now with potential long-term results.

As the morning progressed, the mental acuity of the Moon/North Node conjunction in Virgo was carried forward by a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Virgo’s ruler Mercury in Taurus, strengthening our mental staying power and helping our minds to act in harmony with our emotions, and vice versa.  Mercury in Taurus is steady, practical, and down-to-earth, so while this isn’t likely to be a time of brilliant insights it was a great time for getting things done that require mental focus and attention to detail, as our instinct during this time was to apply our minds to whatever process was necessary for achieving our aims in the material world.  Those of us waking to tend gardens, farms, and schools were especially favored this morning.

Later this morning the Moon in Virgo squared Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, bringing our logical instincts into conflict with our unconscious belief patterns and especially any need to be “right.”  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on unconscious levels, so we may not consciously realize what is happening, but Black Moon Lilith is very much about surrendering to an experience fully in order to gain the most knowledge from it through feminine receptivity before we can bring that knowledge into consciousness, and in Sagittarius she swims in a fiery sea of philosophical fervor, subjecting us to a bedlam of our own beliefs mixed in with those of others.  When well-aspected this placement allows us to feel where we are and are not in alignment with the beliefs around us as well as the ingrained beliefs we have absorbed from family and friends, but in this challenging aspect we instinctively know that something is not adding up – ideas that are powerfully emphasized both in and around us now are in conflict with the logical, rational mode of being that the previous two aspects of this morning have had us enjoying.  The cognitive dissonance is strong this morning.

The real astrological news of the day, however, is the opposition from the Sun in Aries to Jupiter retrograde in Libra.  Jupiter conveys authority, emphasizes the position of our leadership and our faith in our societal institutions, and when well-aspected helps us to maintain good fortune and a sense of optimism.  In Libra, Jupiter has been helping us to understand both our interpersonal relationships and partnerships, and our desire for social harmony.  Retrograde in Libra, Jupiter has had us reassessing how we maintain peace within our relationships and within the larger social order, and in the recent opposition to Uranus and subsequent square to Pluto, Jupiter retrograde has brought those questions to bear on both how we address the need for personal liberty within relationships and society and how we address the larger forces of institutional power.  The Sun brings the light of consciousness to bear on these issues now, and the opposition increases our awareness, and the tension between our conscious understanding of Jovian concerns and the reassessment of social faith that Jupiter retrograde has been engaged in.  And since Jupiter has a habit of magnifying everything that he touches, our awareness of these social and relationship concerns is likely to blow up into something huge today.  Our faith and optimism are affected today, whether becoming a smokescreen that we hide behind in the face of serious challenges to the social order or our relationships, or being emphasized by their lack, as we reconsider our own fortunes now.  This is in further keeping with the lessons regarding faith and ideals brought forward earlier by the square between the Moon and Black Moon Lilith, as Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and the challenging experiences of that sign that Black Moon Lilith has been submerging us in are now brought to the forefront of our consciousness with this Sun/Jupiter opposition.  And with the Sun in Aries, the right to self-determination is brought face-to-face with Jupiter in Libra’s emphasis on peace at all costs, so that we must come to grips with what degree of personal sacrifice we are willing to accept in the name of social harmony and continued faith in our leaders.

We’ll have plenty of time to stew on these matters this afternoon and evening, with no other notable astrological aspects muddling the mixture until late tonight, when the Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces, and our logic becomes confounded by fantasy and potentially illusion or delusion.  Tonight is a time to be cautious about being led down the garden path, whether by our own desires or the deception of others.  Our instincts will be to follow paths that are reasonable, rational, and factually-based, but our ability to assess what falls into those categories will be greatly hindered by the rose-coloured lenses through which we may view anything that appeals to our more universal or romantic ideals.  We are likely to find ourselves feeling more compassionate and wishing to help others in need, but should be wary of being taken advantage of in the process.  On the plus side, our creative vision and our dreams are enhanced by this placement – artists of all stripes are favored by this placement, and stage performances under this aspect may have a special glow as a result.  But anything requiring logic, focus, and keen mental abilities should be set aside for the night – this is not a time of seeing clearly, and we would do well not to agree to anything with potentially far-reaching consequences, including eating fairy food or accepting drinks from handsome strangers.  😉

Astrology Update, March 11th, 2017: Deep Perception

Today the skies are relatively quiet, giving us one single lunar aspect to draw our attention, and then nothing else for the rest of the day.  Which is just as well, since tomorrow the Full Moon in Virgo is set amidst a host of astrological events.  For now, however, we can content ourselves with the lessons of this afternoon’s opposition between the Moon in Virgo and Neptune in Pisces.  The Moon in aspect to Neptune can heighten confusion and the possibility of delusion or even deception, as well as increasing our desire to retreat into fantasy and escapism.  Yet oppositions increase our awareness, so there can be some benefit to this aspect as well.  As mentioned yesterday, the Moon in Virgo may not be comfortable with the emotions that are the stock-in-trade of water signs like Pisces, and Virgo’s attention to detail may seem at odds with the tendency of both Pisces and its transcendental ruler Neptune to blur boundaries and direct our views through rose-coloured lenses.  However, Virgo is highly sensitive, just on the physical level rather than Pisces’ emotional level, and both signs have strong intuitions that are simply perceived in different manners.  Pisces is the more classically psychic sign, but Virgo has its own kind of psychic perception in the form of kinesthesia, which is an intuitive knowing through the body – the tingling in the back of our heads when someone enters the room behind us, and the feeling in the pit of our stomachs when we just know something is wrong. In addition, Pisces is very much associated with hospitals and the healing professions, while Virgo is deeply concerned with health and has the attention to detail that is best suited to informing us of what needs to be eliminated in our process of growth.  As the last sign in the zodiac Pisces is also associated with letting go of that which no longer serves us, and is therefore strongly tied to themes of sacrifice, while Virgo’s pursuit of perfection all too often leads down a path of martyrdom.  These two signs have more in common than is apparent at first glance.

Oppositions ask us to be aware of polarities and learn how to balance these forces, integrating very different skills and modalities that are two sides of the same coin, both necessary for wholeness.  There is deep, transformative, spiritual power in this opposition, if we care to harness it and gain a greater level of perception in the process.  This afternoon is a time for creative and intuitive thought, daydreaming that leads to breakthroughs that can heal both body and soul.  Though the revealed religions of the West tend to consider these two to be separate, the Virgo/Pisces polarity reveals how deeply they are intertwined, and asks us to bring our innermost awareness to that connection.  The Moon’s realm is the unconscious, connecting us all through hidden, instinctive patterns.  Neptune’s realm is the universal consciousness, connecting us all through spiritual mysteries and collective awareness.  When we can see both realms simultaneously, overlapping Virgoan perfection in the material realm with Piscean compassion in the emotional and intuitive realms, we come one step closer to unlocking the secrets of the Universe.

Astrology of February 12th, 2017: Faith and Sympathy

Today we still feel the residual effects of yesterday’s Sun in Aquarius trine Jupiter in Libra, enhancing our sense of good fortune and our consciousness in relation to our faith and ability to see the bigger picture, as well as our understanding of our relationships and social connections, and our dedication to our causes.

The day started out with an early-morning opposition between the Moon in Virgo and Neptune in Pisces, fogging up our instincts.  Virgo is ruled by Mercury (currently in Aquarius) and therefore the Moon in Virgo tends to be on the rational side and doesn’t know what to make of Neptune in Pisces and its dreamy, romantic outlook on the world.  When these two are in opposition we may find ourselves challenged to find the balance between Virgo’s detail-orientation and Pisces’ need to blur the boundaries and seek a more universal point of view.  Neptune has a bit of back-up here because of the Sun/Jupiter trine, as Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces and Neptune is the transcendental ruler.  Neptune is in the sign that they rule and Jupiter is supported by the Sun, the light of consciousness, so the Moon is likely to feel outnumbered, but since the Moon’s processes are unconscious, we need to be aware and compassionate with ourselves in response to any emotional confusion that we experience this morning.

This afternoon, the Moon in Virgo trines Pluto in Capricorn, and now our emotions get a powerful boost of Plutonian intensity, but since this is a supportive aspect, this may manifest as an instinctive understanding of the larger transformative forces in our lives that we may have previously felt powerless to resist.  We may now have a better feeling about just how to climb the mountains facing us, how to place our steps with sureness, prudence, and careful planning.  We may also have an instinct for ferreting out secrets at this time, and things may be revealed to us which may be beneficial to us so long as we are using them in the context of the larger picture and doing so serves the greater good.

Late tonight the Moon in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, giving our emotions and instincts another dose of Piscean sensitivity and putting us in jeopardy of allowing our compassion to get the better of us, putting us in a situation where our normal desire will be to be practical but our empathy will know that someone needs our help.  We may have to make a choice that puts us at a disadvantage, or that reveals a great weakness or an old wound.  We may find our good natures taken advantage of, but we may also learn a lot about ourselves and be capable of doing some serious good with our own knowledge about the hurts of others as a result of our experience with our own hurts.  Now is a time to be aware and neither martyr ourselves nor abandon others without good reason.  We can expand our kindness to embrace those who need it without true harm to ourselves, but the balancing act may not be comfortable.  Nonetheless, it may still be rewarding in terms of the wisdom gained.

Astrology of December 19, 2016: Finding a Way Through

arachne-oil-effect

Today sees Mars enter Pisces in the wee hours of the morning followed by Mercury stationing retrograde in Capricorn and then a flurry of Lunar aspects across the rest of the day.

Mars entering Pisces changes our energy and drive from a logical, individualistic force to something softer, more spiritually and emotionally sensitive.  Pisces is a mutable water sign symbolized by two fish tied together at the tails, swimming in opposite directions, indicating an ability to integrate opposites in both viewpoints and action.  Mars in Pisces feels things out before proceeding, adapts itself to situations, flows through and around the players involved, and though it may tire more easily than Mars in Aquarius, in the end it has the quiet persistence of water flowing through even the tiniest crack in the wall.  Mars in Pisces can find a way through when no-one else can.

This quietly adaptive energy that overcomes boundaries may be especially useful when navigating the beginning of Mercury retrograde today.  At the very least, it can impart some patience in dealing with the potential technological and communication issues that so often characterize Mercury retrograde.  With Mercury stationing so close to Pluto in Capricorn, there is an unusual intensity about this retrograde, as it forces us to examine the structures and hierarchies in our lives, the goals that we have pursued since December 2nd, where it occupied the same degree that it will when it turns direct again on January 8th.  Pluto tends to break things apart into their essential components, decaying, dissolving, and forcing us to release that which no longer serves our purposes.  Necessary?  Yes.  Pleasant?  No.

This Mercury retrograde sees us turning inward at a time that normally encourages us to focus outward.  Remember the Piscean fish tied together at the tail?  Here is where Mars in Pisces may really shine, helping us to swim simultaneously within the social realms of Venus in Aquarius backed up by Jupiter in Libra and the introspective realm of Mercury retrograde in Capricorn intensified by both Pluto and the Sun.

Meanwhile, the Moon has its own instinctive plans for the day, some helpful, some not so.

Shortly after Mercury stations retrograde the Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces.  The Moon in Virgo is distinctly practical, and in opposition to Neptune in Pisces says “we’ll have none of that dreamy, confusing stuff here!”  Neptune says otherwise.  The confrontation between these two may put us in a fog during the early morning hours, but could also produce some interesting dreams well worth noting, with the combination of these two forces encouraging us to balance boundary-dissolving vision with detail-oriented organization.

Several hours later the Moon finds itself inconjunct Venus in Aquarius, and that Virgoan practicality may find itself struggling to understand another kind of larger vision, one that is both distinctly individual and idealistically social.  With our values in this forward-thinking realm, our emotions may struggle to catch up, as our instincts during the Virgo Moon are to strive for exacting perfection while Aquarian vision is cognizant that human society is far from perfect, and not likely to be perfected by fussing over details at the expense of the larger picture.

The Moon in Virgo normally finds an ally in a trine to Mercury in Capricorn, but since Mercury is Virgo’s ruler and has just stationed retrograde, that Virgo Moon may find itself along for an introspective ride it didn’t bargain for.  Thankfully, Virgo is good at compulsively fact-checking and fine-tuning details to prevent technological and communications disasters, so this trine may help to smooth over the beginning of this Mercury retrograde.  With the Moon trining Pluto shortly after its trine to Mercury, that concern for details can also help to navigate the Plutonian intensity that marks this retrograde, and it is likely that we will have reason to be grateful for every little bit of help we can get in that department.  Still, emotions may also be heightened by this aspect, so the afternoon is not likely to be mild or forgettable.  This is a good start to the lessons we will be learning during this retrograde season.

The day ends with a late-night square from the Moon in Virgo to Saturn in Sagittarius.  After a day of confronting potential shake-ups in our neatly-ordered plans, our patience and self-discipline may find itself stretched a bit thin, and we may have a hard time dealing with viewpoints that contradict our own.  Given all that has contributed to a potentially exhausting day, we may be forced to confront our limitations through the effects of stress upon our health, so we are best off taking it easy tonight and giving ourselves some necessary self-care in order to keep from having our frazzled nerves lead to unhappy immune systems and a subsequent trip to the doctor.  The Lord of Karma suggests that we go to bed early! And while Moon in Virgo perfectionism might have us chasing worriesome little details into the night, I suggest that we listen to the cosmic taskmaster here and give ourselves some well-earned rest.  Chances are that we’re going to need it.
