Astrology Update, Full Moon, January 1st, 2018 (Wolf Moon): Drinking Desire

The upcoming Full Moon on January 1st is an emotional powerhouse, starting off the New Year with a deep exploration of where our feelings and our attractions vie for prominence in our relationships, with our deepest feelings and connections driving the actions that will make all the difference as we forge our karmic paths.

Full Moons are the culmination of energies and intentions set in motion at the preceding New Moon.  In this case, that would have been the December 18th, 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius, which was conjunct Saturn at 29 degrees, amplifying the emotional impact of the lessons of Saturn in Sagittarius over the past few years, just before Saturn’s entry into Capricorn the next day.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but Saturn’s presence emphasized the need to complete old business in order to start with the new, including the necessity of getting rid of what we no longer need, letting go of habits and relationships that no longer serve us.  This emphasis was amplified by the Winter Solstice following closely on the heels of that New Moon, with the Sun and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees Capricorn, a conjunction that last occurred in 1664, giving the Winter Solstice a fateful feeling that the newfound energy of practical manifestation stirred by Saturn’s entry into Capricorn would affect our paths not simply for that day or the upcoming year, but for centuries and lifetimes to come.

This Full Moon therefore is the emotional counterpoint to that fateful and achievement-oriented New Moon, putting what we are manifesting in our practical endeavors in the context of our feelings.  Saturn is about lengthy, laborious processes, and whatever we felt called to set in motion at the December New Moon and the Winter Solstice needs to be something that fills our hearts and souls completely, or we simply won’t be able to maintain the will to grind through all obstacles for however long it takes us to complete this task.  Saturn is also about karma, the physical and metaphysical reactions to what we think and do and say in this world.  There is a weight and portentousness to the goals we aspire to under Saturn’s guidance.  Do we really want to take the karmic risks that such goals entail without actually feeling deeply about them?   How do we feel about the legacies of our actions over the course of our lifetimes, and the lifetimes thereafter?

Since the Moon is in Cancer those endeavors must also be seen in the context of our families and communities.  It’s not enough to set big goals in the physical world, nor to have the Saturnine/Capricornian willingness to climb any mountain to achieve them; the goals we set need to stir our feelings deeply but they also need to enhance our sense of interpersonal connection, or they’re not really worth a damn.  How does what we are doing affect those we care about?  How does it affect the people who nurture us, even those within our neighborhoods and social circles whose choices nurture us without our knowing them?  And how do we feel about the ripples of consequence that our actions will have in the larger world?

The Full Moon opposing Venus puts an emphasis on relationships, with full, sentimental Cancerian emotions but also a practical, earthy approach by Venus; there will be a desire for security and sticking to familiar ground.  Wild, new relationships or over-stimulating surroundings are not favored by the Capricornian Venus, nor by the homebody Cancerian Moon, yet there is an amplification of sexual desire created by Venus’ sextile to Mars, who also trines the Moon as part of a Kite formation, so both our emotions and our need for physical affection are feeling the call to action now, and we may find ourselves driven to extremes by the Scorpionic Mars attempting to reconcile the disparity between the two.  The Moon/Venus opposition creates a challenge between our emotions and our style of relating and experiencing affection, and there is a very real possibility of misplaced affections, unwanted sexual attention, or unrequited love.  However, the Kite formation that this is a part of offers the keys to meeting this challenge, the cosmic and personal tools available for use in solving the problems it draws our attention to, and relationships that come under the spotlight now have a good potential to grow and be strengthened as a result.

Within the body of the Kite is a Grand Water Trine between the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter/Mars in Scorpio.  The Moon trine Neptune creates romantic devotion, though this may be based more on fantasy than reality.  There is a self-sacrificing quality to this devotion, a desire to immerse oneself in the beloved, whether that beloved is a person or a creative project or a spiritual path or a social cause.  Since the trine is a harmonious aspect, the Neptunian urge to dissolve boundaries is less likely to be damaging than with a hard aspect, but it can still make for some potentially unsettling experiences, especially on the subconscious level, and particularly sensitive souls may feel the need to hide away at home or in other safe, familiar surroundings.  Given that this Full Moon follows on the heels of New Year’s Eve revelry, there is a heightened likelihood that overindulgence on that night leads to the need to stay home the next day and nurse one’s hangover, whether physical or emotional…

Intuition is heightened by this trine, with Jupiter amplifying the intuitive connection between spiritual Neptune and the instinctive, emotional Moon, and giving us a sense of faith in the truth of what we feel.  Mars in the mix gives courage and the impetus to action, with the sextile from Mars to Venus intensifying sexual attraction, and since Mars is in Scorpio, one of the two signs he rules, his action under this Full Moon is focused, directed, potentially hidden, and on occasion even ruthless.  The conjunction with Jupiter encourages grand gestures with deep meaning and impact, not simply big, showy displays with no substance.  Mars in Scorpio is not interested in half-measures!

Jupiter trining Neptune not only amplifies intuition but also generosity toward those less fortunate than ourselves.  The downside of this is the potential to be taken for a ride by unscrupulous and deceptive types, emotional vampires and addicts seeking a fix, or authority figures abusing their power, rather than those who are truly deserving of our largesse.  On the upside is the powerful spiritual awareness created by this trine, an awareness that is not merely cerebral but instead opens our hearts to a larger feeling for humanity as a whole and our universal interconnectedness.  Given the Moon/Venus challenge on a personal level, this is a time when we may gain a heightened understanding of how the personal is political, and how the challenges we face one-on-one mirror the challenges we face as a species.  Thankfully, that Grand Water Trine in this kite gives us the emotional tools for meeting those challenges, so we may well gain keys to solving larger world problems from the lessons we learn in our personal relationships at this time.

The Jupiter/Mars conjunction squaring the North Node stimulates and amplifies action in relation to our karmic paths, further emphasizing the sense of fatefulness carrying forward from Saturn’s touch on the New Moon and coming into fullness now, and underscoring the mirroring action between our personal relationship experiences and our connections on a planetary and universal scale.  Whatever intensity and conflict we may experience at this time has the impetus to be resolved with love and compassion, and we are likely to feel the impact of that resolution for some time to come.

Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.

Astrology Update, March 13th, 2017: Setting Minds Alight

Today started off in the early morning hours with Mars in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, aligning our ambition, drive, and energy with our karmic path, increasing our momentum toward the experiences and skills that we need to gain in this life.  This makes today a great day to tend to crucial details in moving ourselves forward and achieving our goals for increasing our well-being on our souls’ level.  The perfectionist nature of Virgo is heightened at this time, with plenty of power driving it, so there is always the possibility of overdoing things now, but this is a harmonious aspect, so I suspect that we will be more driven to pay attention to process and growth, and may find ourselves experiencing a boost in physical vitality as a result.

Still early this morning, the Moon in Libra sextiled Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, bringing our unconscious reactions into alignment with our unconscious wisdom, and allowing us to gain understanding of our shadow side that we can put to good use, especially when it comes to the shadow side of our beliefs and how we relate to others in a larger social context.  Black Moon Lilith deals with the knowledge that hovers in the space between the unconscious and the conscious realms, so we may find the information that occupied our unconscious this morning slowly filtering into the light as the day progresses.

That light may seem brighter this afternoon as Mercury leaves the watery, mystical realm of Pisces for fiery and direct Aries, giving our thoughts and communication a push in a more active direction.  Aries is ruled by Mars, so today’s Mars/North Node trine is likely to influence that action, focusing our minds on the areas of our lives that our souls most want to explore.  We may find ourselves a bit more headstrong now, more self-directed and self-interested.  Aries governs the head, so even though Aries can be a bit impulsive and thoughtless at times, still intelligence is valued by this sign, just not of the ponderous and slow variety.  Mercury in Aries is quick, interested in life, excited by possibility, and eager to try anything and everything.  Aries tends to be more egoic than other signs – after all, it is Aries’ mission to carve out an identity for the self – so we may find ourselves identifying with our ideas more at this time, more likely to defend them as if we are defending our very lives, and so we may find ourselves embroiled in more arguments during this Mercury transit.  On one hand, Aries can be quick to anger, so we may wind up in debates that seem to spring up out of nowhere.  On the other hand, Aries is quick to move on and doesn’t hold a grudge, so those debates may be over and forgotten just as quickly as they’ve begun.  Newness and courageousness of thought are the key aims of this transit, getting us out of whatever mental rut we’ve languished in previously (and hopefully made our peace with during the Mercury transit in Pisces), and trailblazing the way for the Sun’s entry into Aries next week, when our taste for action really starts to cook.

Tonight the Aries fires are fed by our emotions and instincts, as the Moon in airy Libra opposes Venus retrograde in Aries.  Venus rules Libra, so even though emotions under a Libran Moon tend to be more cool, reserved, and intellectual, this Libran Moon feels the heat that Venus is traveling through, albeit through the filter of retrograde reassessment.  Oppositions increase awareness, asking us to balance two very different temperaments.  Libra is peace-loving, social, and all about relationships, whereas Aries is aggressive, freedom-loving (especially with Uranus and Eris continuing their transit here), and all about personal identity and development.  However, not only is Libra’s ruler transiting Aries, but Libra is also the sign most concerned with balance.  More than any other sign (except possibly Pisces) Libra is eternally aware of its opposite – Libra is always conscious of the other side to any story.  Tonight’s Moon/Venus opposition then is a unique opportunity to find balance in our relationships through our emotions and affections, gaining greater understanding of how we connect with others while still maintaining an integral sense of self.  Since the Moon operates on the unconscious level, and Venus is very much about sensory experience, this understanding is not to be gained through thinking so much as doing, so this is a time to be social, whether one-on-one or in a broader sense, and enjoy this increased awareness of our connections and the feelings and pleasures we share with each other.

Astrology of February 14th, 2017: A Balance of Needs

This is a Valentine’s Day with some potentially rocky moments astrologically-speaking, but awareness can help to make them a little easier to navigate and create a strong potential for growth within our relationships today.

The first aspect of the day is the Moon in Libra opposing Venus in Aries in the early morning hours.  This puts our emotions and instincts in relation to partnership in potential conflict with our personal pleasures and sense of independence.  Keep in mind that these two can go head-to-head against each other or use the enhanced awareness brought about by being face-to-face to create a greater state of balance between them.  Being conscious of the potential for these dynamics allows us the possibility of choosing to integrate both our diplomacy and our passion in a way that sets the day off on the right foot for romantic pursuits.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Libra trines Mercury in Aquarius, creating a lovely, harmonious flow between our sociable instincts and emotions and our equally sociable thoughts and communication.  Thinking in ways that are mindful of both one-on-one interactions and their context within the larger group, and communicating in alignment with the overall social good are both favored now.  Partnerships created in connection with our social causes and group activities will fare especially well now, and that applies to business and pleasure alike.

This afternoon things get a bit more testy as the Moon in Libra opposes Mars in Aries, putting our emotions and instincts in potential conflict with our drive to do our own thing, mirroring the Moon/Venus opposition earlier but now with more of an edge and a greater potential for frustration and disruption along the way.  It is therefore even more crucial that we strive for awareness and balance between these two, and recognize that we are likely to need to compromise between our romantic feelings and our aggressive (sexual) focus.

Having all three personal planets interacting with the Moon in Libra (sign of relationships) today with the Moon opposing both gendered and sexual planets gives us a huge potential to make progress in our interpersonal relationships, but it is likely to be a bit of a balancing act and requires both awareness and tact to lead us on a path that both keeps the peace and respects individual desires.  The Moon/Mercury trine is the glue between these polarities, asking us to take communicate our feelings and communicate with feeling in order to create partnerships that equally fulfill the needs of both our partners and ourselves.

Around the witching hour, the Moon put an intense finial atop tonight by squaring Pluto in Capricorn.  We may find our emotions running afoul of circumstances beyond our control, particularly those related to authority, career, and reputation.  Pluto creates deep transformation, and can lend a power (or a need for power) to whatever he touches that can leave us feeling out of control.  In relation to romantic emotions and instincts already put on-notice by the avatars of female and male sexuality today, we may find ourselves in dangerous straits, where passion outweighs propriety and safety.  The challenge here is to recognize that fulfilling our romantic desires and our need for all to be harmonious and beautiful is not worth doing violence to our souls (nor facing violence against our bodies).  We may find ourselves challenged to defend what we feel, and we need to be aware of our own power and not use it against the will of others, nor allow our own free will to be usurped.  Our emotions can be a powerful connection or just as powerful a weapon, and our need for real partnership is never served by wielding its power against the ones we love.

Astrology of December 17th, 2016: Benevolent Leadership

 lions-head

The wee hours of this morning started today’s astrological activity with the Moon in Leo opposing Venus in Aquarius.  Venus in Aquarius is not necessarily comfortable there, since she is all about getting in close and Aquarius prefers to remain detached.  A Leo Moon opposing her is simply confronting her with this discomfort, since the Moon is in a passionate place much more suited to Venus’ style.  So, the day has started with a feeling of being at odds with passionate instincts and cool affections, a hot-and-cold exchange that may have made things a bit uncomfortable on the interpersonal front this morning.

That discomfort was followed and perhaps exacerbated some hours later by the Moon in bold Leo inconjuncting first Mercury in cautious Capricorn and then Pluto in Capricorn again, for a morning that has required careful balancing between what we say and what we feel, with tension between our instinct to take center stage and a need for control that suggests we’d be better off manipulating circumstances from behind the scenes.

This afternoon will hopefully ease that tension, however, with a trio of favorable Lunar aspects in steady succession.  First, the Moon in Leo sextiles Jupiter in Libra, magnifying our instincts toward Leonine grandeur and generosity with Jupiter in Libra’s own magnanimity and concern for social harmony.  Jupiter in Libra is a gracious ruler breathing rarified air, and his influence on our emotions and instincts during his contact with the Leo Moon encourages us all to be benevolent leaders in our own kingdoms.  We can afford to be tolerant and kindly today, even where we otherwise might not.

The Moon in Leo trines Saturn shortly thereafter, bringing Saturn’s steadying, disciplined influence to whatever visions of grandeur the Moon/Jupiter sextile may encourage.  This tempers our courage and desire for self-expression, making this afternoon a good time to get things done at a steady, leisurely pace.  After all, the king of the jungle is hardly ever in a hurry!  That is, until a trine from Uranus in Aries adds some electricity to our pace.  😉  That Moon/Uranus trine  and the Grand Fire Trine that it forms with Saturn in Sagittarius is a great way to finish out the afternoon and set the tone for an evening out among friends or exploring new scenes and ideas.  Uranus loves all things new and forward-thinking, after all, so if there’s someplace new where you’d like to make an impression with a little lordly help from the Leo Moon, tonight is the night!  Leonine confidence combined with Uranian curiosity and Saturnine caution to steady you give this night great potential to expand your own influence and enjoy the best of neighboring realms with the perfect mixture of spirited strength and self-assurance.
