Astrology of February 15th, 2017: Shared Potential

Today has seen the Moon moving through a series of aspects with Uranus, Jupiter, and Saturn, reinforcing the Triangle of Potential that we’ve seen since the holiday season (which is Saturn is now moving out of orb from).  I’ve talked a lot about this Triangle of Potential over the past couple of months, so if you’ve been reading along during that time you’re already quite familiar with it, but for those who are just getting caught up, it essentially involves a balancing process between our individual desires for freedom that are manifesting in sudden acts of rebellion versus our faith and good fortune in partnership and expanded desire for social harmony, as represented by the ongoing opposition between Jupiter and Uranus, with Saturn acting as the mediator between the two, applying discipline and understanding of process and boundaries in relation to our sense of ideals and desire for the truth.

This morning, the Moon in Libra opposed Uranus in Aries, creating a strong potential for sudden disruptions in both our emotional reactions and our normal routines (a huge part of why I’m writing this post so late in the day!).  The Moon conjuncting Jupiter a few hours later reinforced our instinctive desire for peace and harmony to balance out any residual effects from Uranus’ jarring influence earlier, but it may also have made whatever we feel seem larger than life, including feeling unsettled or even out of control in relation to this morning’s events.

Thankfully, this afternoon’s sextile from the Moon in Libra to Saturn in Sagittarius has provided some stability and balance to the equation, helping us to slow the frenetic pace that a Moon/Uranus opposition can set, and ease down on the massive surge of emotion that the Moon/Jupiter conjunction may have encouraged.  Saturn is not often thought of as a kindly influence in astrology, but today’s Moon/Saturn sextile is a lovely example of where the stern Lord of Karma can actually help us to navigate some of the more crazy-making side-effects from the actions of other planets, using patience and discipline to help us make sense of it all.

This evening the Moon in Libra trines the Sun in Aquarius, bringing our unconscious desire for social harmony into a supportive flow state with our conscious desire to improve ourselves and our society, aligning our instinctive reactions with our core identity.  At the same time, this starts a lunar void-of-course period, so this is not a night for starting any bold new initiatives, but instead it’s a good time for falling back on the routines that may have been disrupted by this morning’s tug-of-war between Uranus and Jupiter, observing what may need fine-tuning in our social environments and determining where changes need to be made to achieve the best results for everyone involved.

Late tonight sees the Moon’s entry into Scorpio, increasing our emotional depth and sensitivity, but also making us less likely to communicate our feelings and experiences as we plunge into the more mysterious workings of our lives.  Scorpio is the fixed water sign, the deepest part of the unconscious, the intuitive ocean.  Its classical ruler is Mars, giving it strength of focus, and its transcendental ruler is Pluto, giving it intense willpower and a transformative urge.  Whatever Scorpio touches is not going to be interested in surfaces nor likely to act without impact.  Our instincts are now turning to all of the deep, dark, intense stuff of humanity:  psychology, money, politics, sex, religion, and power.  Especially power.  Now is a time when we are likely to see an increase in attempted one-upmanship and jockeying for position in our social circles and relationships.  The closer the emotional attachment the more likely that issues of power will raise their heads now.  We need to be conscious of our own control issues now, and understand that acknowledging others’ power does not deny us our own.  Indeed, tonight our power is likely to make itself felt, both waking and sleeping.  We dream deep tonight.

Astrology of January 28th, 2017: A Higher Cause

Today’s astrological weather takes an upturn, with the Moon in Aquarius making three supportive aspects in the afternoon and evening, and no other notable aspects occurring to disrupt them.  What’s more, all three of these lunar aspects supportively highlight the planets involved in the ongoing Triangle of Potential between Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn, helping us in working through some of the lessons of that configuration in the least painful manner possible.

The morning and early afternoon are quiet in terms of aspects, though the energetic boost to new undertakings from yesterday’s New Moon is still likely to be felt, especially in areas related to social causes, technology, education, and futurism.  Aquarius being inclined to favor the rational over the emotional makes us likely to express what we are feeling in terms of how we think we are feeling rather than getting down in the thick of the actual emotion, which may be just as well given the emotional intensity of a week spent by so many of us waking up in dread of what the daily news will reveal.

This afternoon begins the trio of alignments supporting the Triangle of Potential with the Moon in Aquarius sextiling Uranus in Aries.  This can give our rebellious instincts a boost, and sends us seeking out the new and unusual whether we do so mindfully or not.  Uranus energies can feel disruptive for those of us who don’t normally get enough newness and experimentation in our lives or for those of us who are feeling trapped by our situations.  Luckily this is a sextile, so the contact between the Moon and Uranus here is gentle and harmonious, giving us some curiosity and impetus forward at a pace that we can handle.  Plus, the Aquarian side of the equation enjoys the contact with its transcendental ruler Uranus, and the Aries fire that Uranus currently resides in gets a boost of fuel to its individualist tendencies as a result of mental oxygenation by Aquarian ideas.  All in all, it’s an enlivening pairing.

The energy and excitement that can be generated by the Moon/Uranus pairing gets an outlet tonight when the Moon in Aquarius turns its attention to Jupiter, trining with the Greater Benefic and promoting ease and flow between our knee-jerk reactions and our desire for social harmony.  We will feel instinctively drawn to social situations and feel the need to interact with those with whom we can make progress on the causes and ideals that matter most to us.  We will be more willing to consider the ideas of others, more interested in mediating and working with others toward solutions, and more inclined to seek partnerships that help both our society and us as individuals to evolve.  And if all goes according to cosmic plan those partnerships are the result of the drive toward newness that we felt this afternoon, so that whatever we are planning now doesn’t keep us stuck in the same old rut, nor allowing Jupiter’s magnification of the desire for social harmony to keep us from exploring the new possibilities that pioneering Uranus in Aries has revealed to our Aquarian hearts.

The Moon sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius toward the witching hour gives us the discipline that we need to tie all of this together, aligning Aquarian social instincts with a clear understanding of our limitations and boundaries.  Saturn tends to lend a serious note to whatever he influences, so our socially-conscious instincts are not likely to go off half-cocked under this aspect, nor are our intentions frivolous.  This is a good aspect for carefully exploring our limits and seeing what we actually can and can’t do to improve our situation and that of others in our social circles.  Tonight’s journey of the Moon in relationship with the Triangle of Potential gives us an instinctual framework for using our discipline and hard-won experience to master the balancing act between the Uranian desire for change and Jupiter’s desire to keep the faith.  Tonight our social networks and partnerships can be the perfect vehicle for using our individual gifts toward a higher cause.

Astrology of January 19th, 2017: Authority and Rebellion

The day started out pleasantly enough with the Moon in Libra sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius in the very wee hours, following on the heels of last night’s Moon/Jupiter conjunction with the magnitude of last night’s emotions getting a steadying influence from Saturn, and the Moon in Libra’s harmonizing influence gentling our insecurities.  Which was deeply needed with Mars in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius just 20 minutes later…  These are the two trouble-making planets of classical astrology, the Lesser and Greater Malefic, and having them square off in the most challenging aspect pits aggression against fear; needless to say, this does not bode well for the day, and since planetary alignments change more slowly than Lunar and Solar alignments, we’ve been slowly building up to this for the past couple of days and will be feeling the reverberations for another couple more.  I will not deny that this gives me concern for the numerous Inauguration Day protests planned throughout the United States.  Given the stakes for the country if Putin’s coup and Trump’s resultant inauguration go unopposed, I’m not going to advocate for people not to protest, only for people to be careful and not allow themselves to be unduly provoked, as this alignment is likely to exacerbate an already volatile political climate.

That said, this alignment occurs within a Lunar void-of-course period set off by the Moon’s sextile to Saturn so soon before, with the resultant possibility that cooler heads will prevail (at least until this afternoon), as the void-of-course Moon helps us to see what to hold onto and what to let go of, and I am hoping that extends to tempers.  😉  Void-of-course Moon is also a time of heightened intuition, which I suspect is especially needed now, though it is also a time when we should stick to routine, and any bold new ventures or meetings now are likely to come to naught.  This period lasts until this afternoon, when the Moon enters Scorpio less than an hour after the Sun enters Aquarius, and shortly after that the Moon and Sun square each other.  Given the stubborn nature of both of these fixed signs, having our conscious and unconscious selves pitted against each other now is likely to generate additional frustrations.

The Sun in Aquarius makes us especially conscious of the individual’s place within society, and the ways in which the evolution of the individual shapes the evolution of society.  That’s all well and good, but this afternoon that consciousness is pitted against intense and secretive Scorpionic emotions and instincts, and with Scorpio’s classical ruler Mars squaring off against Saturn from the watery realm of Pisces, we are likely to experience those emotions seething under the surface at length, until they are set off by just the wrong social trigger.  There is some comfort perhaps in the mutual classical rulership of both Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, currently in the socially-conscious sign of Libra, but Saturn’s classical rulership of Aquarius makes it likely that the Sun in this placement will simply reinforce the chafing-against-authority feeling of the Mars/Saturn square, with authority sparking rebellion and rebellion inviting further clamping down by authority, continuing in ever-intensifying circles.

However, the Last Quarter Moon that begins today is a time for releasing and letting go.  Whatever we confront during this Mars/Saturn square, we need to exercise enough discernment to see what is worth keeping and what no longer serves us, and limit destruction only to what merits it.  The Mars/Saturn square is positioned against the backdrop of the ongoing Triangle of Potential between individualist Uranus in Aries, socially-minded Jupiter in Libra, and disciplined Saturn in Sagittarius encouraging us to restructure our world mindfully with a greater balance between self and society, even as the United States moves toward its Pluto return, when Pluto transits the same degree that it did when this nation was born.  Pluto, transcendental ruler of Scorpio where the Moon resides today, plays the long game with its multi-century orbit, and governs control, death, and transformation, sometimes all in the same intense package at once.  Little wonder then that these two squares and the larger configuration and current cycles all overlap and reinforce each other now.  Challenges like these are the catalysts to change and growth.  What we do with that impetus is up to us.

Astrology of January 1st, 2017: Mentally Stimulating

batik-3-detail-2-light

Happy New Year!

Many of us may still be feeling the effects of indulgence resulting from last night’s Mars/Neptune conjunction, but the heavens have been fairly kindly this morning via three favorable aspects from the Moon in Aquarius, first in a supportive sextile to Uranus in Aries, then trined to Jupiter in Libra, and finally sextile to Saturn in Sagittarius, all in quick succession due to the continuing Triangle of Potential formed between these three outer planets in which the normally stern influence of Saturn becomes the disciplined mediator between Jupiter and Uranus calling attention to the balancing act between the desire for social harmony and the individually-fueled need for change.  Saturn here helps to pace these two, who left to their own devices would rush headlong into sudden change and blow both that desire for change and the results all out of proportion.  The Moon aspecting each of these three players brings the opportunities inherent in this configuration into focus through our emotions and instincts, and gives us great potential for diving into our New Year’s resolutions as soon as last night’s Mars/Neptune blurriness wears off (likely not until tomorrow…).

The afternoon and evening are fairly quiet in astrological terms until one minute before the witching hour Pacific Time, when the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aquarius, beginning a short void-of-course period before entering Pisces in the wee hours of tomorrow morning.  This is a great time to indulge in activities that are mentally stimulating but otherwise not too taxing.  Sounds like the perfect night to curl up with a good book.  🙂

Astrology of December 22nd, 2016: A Giddy Current

fire-and-water-detail-oil

All of today’s astrological action happened during the first half of the day, with the second half of the day being a void-of-course period, and the aspects of the day have all been Lunar, so this is an outline of the influences on our instincts and feelings leading us into the afternoon and some suggestions about where we should go from there.  Chances are that these influences will linger in our subconsciousness for a little while longer moving into the afternoon until being scattered on the timeless tide of the void-of-course.

The day started out with an early morning square from the Moon in Libra to Pluto in Capricorn, creating emotional intensity when our more peaceable instincts bumped up against our desire to maintain control (or the illusion thereof) in relation to our goals.  Thankfully, that was followed shortly by the Moon trining Venus in Aquarius, putting our instincts and our affections in harmony, so even with the intensity of the Moon/Pluto square, the rough edges were hopefully smoothed out with Venusian friendliness.

Several hours later the Moon in Libra conjuncted Jupiter, and whatever we were feeling earlier may have gotten much bigger.  That multi-hour gap between aspects was a benefit that hopefully kept the Plutonian influence from getting too unruly, but let’s not make assumptions about the potential for lingering feelings to get blown out of proportion. However, the Moon/Jupiter conjunction was very shortly followed by the Moon sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius, bringing some support in the nick of time in the areas of self-discipline and boundary setting.

That said, the morning ended with the Moon in Libra opposing Uranus in Aries (a flipped version of a natal aspect I know all-too-well), bringing sudden changes of mood and the urge to seek out the new and unusual.  A bit of bravado may have come with this thanks to the current Aries posture of the cosmic rebel Uranus, so we would do well to use whatever remains of Saturnine caution to keep from diving headfirst into foolhardiness as we head into the afternoon.

The rest of the day is one long void-of-course period, so this is not a day for lofty new enterprises, contrary to what the remnants of that Moon/Uranus may suggest – even though we can try new things we should not build new foundations to projects we care about, or meet with new people we hope to depend upon in any way, as they are likely to turn out to be very different than whatever they seem like today.  Since the void-of-course Moon favors routine and the Moon/Uranus opposition favors anything but, this afternoon may struggle with regard to productivity at work, but it’s not a completely useless time. This is a great time for reviewing the status of projects, correcting mistakes, and finishing what we can before kicking up our heels for an impromptu gathering of friends, and once we no longer have any responsibilities to worry about we definitely should try new things!  That new restaurant we’ve been wanting to check out?  Perfect!  New games or creative experiments?  Definitely.  The void-of-course Moon is floating between its last aspect in Libra and its entry into Scorpio tomorrow morning, so we should join it and float through the current of giddy sociability and excitement that marks the entire second half of this day.
