Astrology of February 21st, 2017: Thoughts and Beliefs

Early this morning the Moon in Capricorn sextiled the Sun in Pisces, aligning our unconscious and conscious selves harmoniously, with our emotions and instincts expressing themselves in a practical, goal-driven manner and our core sense of self expressing sensitivity and compassion as well as a concern for the bigger picture.  This aspect set a tone for the early morning of combining our personal aims with the well-being of our fellows, and this was reinforced shortly thereafter by the Moon in Capricorn trining the North Node in Virgo, making us mindful of the details in relation to fulfilling our karmic purpose.  All too often people reduce the concept of karma to a glorified system of punishment and reward, but really karma is more a matter of cause and effect, the necessary balancing that must happen in response to prior actions.  I think of it a bit like kinetic energy.  Since individual karma does not occur in a vacuum, it is part of an overall pattern created by the combined karma of all.  Thus, each person’s karmic path is intertwined with the paths of others.  These two astrological aspects so close together reinforce this understanding, and help us to be mindful of our goals in service to both our own path and the greater karma of the world.

Within minutes, however, the Moon in Capricorn squares Venus in Aries, challenging our feelings and instincts with our need for action to satisfy our affections and desires.  This challenge is not necessarily a bad thing.  Since a Capricornian Moon is ambitious and goal-oriented, our instinctual drive under its influence is to get things done, but sometimes it can get bogged down in planning and cautiousness, so having an active, impatient Venus in Aries demanding that we move may very well be the impetus that we need.  Of course, Venus in Aries is likely to err more on the selfish side of the balance of personal and universal needs previously mentioned, but the consciousness inspired by the Sun/Moon sextile less than an hour earlier may still keep us mindful of our better natures, and regardless, Venus is still a benevolent influence even in a challenging aspect.  At most, this influence might impart some minor frustration regarding conflicting goals or the sacrifice of some personal comfort to fulfill a higher purpose, and since Aries is not prone to holding grudges, that is not likely to last long.

The big astrological news of the day is Mercury in Aquarius trining Jupiter in Libra toward mid-day, as aspect which affects the entire day and which we built up to during yesterday’s strong Mercury and Jupiter influences, and will still feel residual effects of tomorrow just as we are still experiencing residual effects today from yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus sextile.  Keep in mind that Mercury here is a mediating force between Jupiter and Uranus in their ongoing opposition, just as Saturn had previously been in the Triangle of Potential that was in force in December and January.  Yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus sextile and today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine form their own (short-lived) Triangle of Potential, with our thoughts and communication mediating in the struggle for balance between our personal desire for freedom and the rebellion used to achieve it and our desire for connection and peaceful relationships as well as our faith in diplomacy and social harmony.  Today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine reinforces the interaction between our thoughts and our beliefs, specifically when it comes to our faith in our social connections and personal relationships, bringing with it a strong sense of optimism and a desire for diplomatic solutions to conflict.  Now is a time to tap into Jovian good fortune in our communications and contracts, as well as in dealings with government and health concerns.

This afternoon the Sun conjuncts the South Node in Pisces, making us mindful of where we have been, and putting us in a place of power with regard to the skills that we have already developed.  Now is a time for us to be conscious of what we have learned thus far.  Of course, because the South Node is on an axis with the North Node, this puts the Sun opposite the North Node, making us conscious of what we have not yet done in pursuit of our karmic path.  The Sun’s position here may make us mindful of where we feel stuck or held back, and can increase our hunger for what we have not yet achieved.  Unless, of course, we really want to stay stuck…  Since Pisces’ transcendental ruler is Neptune, which governs our more escapist tendencies, our consciousness in this realm may find itself wishful for the past, nostalgic and content with sentimentality rather than growth.  Still, because oppositions increase awareness of the opposing forces, it is unlikely that we will be able to remain in such fantasies without having something draw our attention to where we really should be headed.  This is a good time to make peace with the past and set our sights firmly on the future, especially since Pisces’ classical ruler Jupiter is so emphasized by today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine, and therefore the more visionary and optimistic side of the Sun’s Piscean consciousness is emphasized.  Our hunger for the future is born out of the past, so this combination of aspects today may well strengthen our appetites.

Tonight, the Moon in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces, putting our emotions and instincts in harmony with our fantasies and spiritual yearnings.  This is a gently harmonious aspect, giving a pleasantly dreamy quality to the evening without taking our feet off the ground.  Whether daydreams or actual dreams, sometimes our fantasies help bolster our goals in useful ways with vision and intention.  The theory of relativity was developed as the result of a daydream, after all.  Sometimes the real world and the imagination need to join hands in order to achieve greater things, and tonight is one of those times.  This is a good time to use our imaginations in creating our plans, getting practical with our creativity and creative with our practicality, and fueling our ambitions with dreams of what might be.

Astrology of February 1st, 2017: Depth and Heart

Today’s astrological action gets off to a late start, with no significant aspects until this afternoon when the Moon in Aries sextiles the Sun in Aquarius.  The Moon in Aries is headstrong enough that it might be just as well not to throw too many other heavenly bodies in the mix, as Aries isn’t too keen on accepting outside influence or advice, instead wanting to go it alone, full of courage (or foolhardiness) and a pioneering spirit.  Our emotions and instincts may well have done some trailblazing this morning, but could just as easily have bruised a few egos along the way, so the Moon’s sextile to the Sun this afternoon is a helpful reminder of our more social inclinations, and may help us to put our heroic impulses in service of a greater cause.

Later in the afternoon, Venus in Pisces trines Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, pulling us back out of the wind and fire of Aquarius and Aries for a dip in the dark pool of our intuition.  This is a deeply sensual and knowing influence, when our affections and pleasures take a turn toward the intense, and we may well wonder what hit us.  We are likely to be drawn to the mysterious and the forbidden at this time, and are not likely to take kindly to anyone wishing to hold us back from what we desire.

With Mercury in Capricorn sextiling Chiron in Pisces, whatever the Venus/Black Moon Lilith trine has beckoned us toward is likely to stir up hidden pains, especially those connected to our affections and spiritual yearnings, but the Mercury/Chiron sextile gives us a tailor-made time to give deep thought to what we are feeling and learn from what insights we may discover, and if possible, now is the perfect time to share these feelings with someone we trust.  The combined wisdom and connection that we may gain from such confidences will be well-worth whatever pangs first stirred us to think and speak about them.

Which is a blessing, since the night does not end gently, but dives into a square between the Moon in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn, intensifying our emotions in challenging ways.  We may find ourselves in the grip of fears about the larger forces in our lives, our government and other institutions that our current fiery instincts feel confined and oppressed by.  Our hearts are wild, young punks under this influence, railing against authority, while frightening and potentially abusive powers tighten their grip around us.  Our hearts may rage while our minds wonder what the hell is going on, or we may simply feel restless and deeply uneasy without really knowing the source of those feelings, but we should be mindful that they are a symptom of a larger process of transformation that clutches us all, and while tonight’s influence may be fleeting that larger process is something that we must find a way to face for the next several years.

For many of us, this will resurrect our personal demons from the time of the Pluto/Uranus squares that stretched from 2012 to 2015, a time that we hoped we’d left behind us.  This is just a small reverberation from that time, but it carries with it a warning for the future.  The Aries Moon wants us to be courageous, while Pluto in Capricorn brings us face-to-face with our deepest fears regarding our society and authority.  But real courage is not an absence of fear, but rather the willingness to go forward to meet that fear and whatever grim forces have inspired it, and bring some resolution to it whether by battle or by some kinder means.  Now is the time to face what we fear most, knowing our mortality and frailty and the strength of the forces arrayed against us, but not yielding to them without a damned good fight.

In the Pagan year, we have come to the time of Imbolc, a time of purification and testing, when nature determines what is strong enough to survive, and what is too weak to live through the remnants of winter until spring.  The Moon/Pluto square’s influence will pass with the night, but what we learn from it may well continue to hold sway into the future.  Since we are in the first quarter of the Moon now, the lessons that we learn at this time are part of the energy building toward the Full Moon, when whatever wishes we held at the New Moon come to their fullness and are released into the world.  Imbolc is a time sacred to Brigid, the goddess of inspiration and smithcraft, and we will need whatever tempering she bids us endure in facing our fears tonight to fight for our desires in the coming weeks and months, and bring them into reality, no matter the odds.

Astrology of January 22nd, 2017: Exploratory Instincts

Today’s astrology post is appearing late in the day because after participating in the Women’s March on Seattle yesterday my autoimmune issues kicked in and today I feel like a truck hit me.  Totally worth it.  🙂

The Moon entered Sagittarius in the early morning hours today, giving our emotions and instincts an idealistic boost.  We are more likely to act forthrightly and broad-mindedly today, more active and interested in the world around us and exploring new ideas, and less likely to be patient with challenges to our ideals.  This is a good time to explore different philosophies and religions, try food and music from different cultures, and try new things in general.

This feeling of exploration got a boost this morning from the Moon in Sagittarius sextiling the Sun in Aquarius, creating harmony between our unconscious and conscious selves and placing our expansive emotions and instincts in the context of personal growth and expression in turn leading to improvement of our society.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Sagittarius squared the North Node in Virgo, challenging our emotions and instincts to live up to our karmic purpose.  Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, making it far more concerned with the grand, overall picture than the nit-picky little details that Virgo is concerned with, and the North Node’s challenge to the Moon here asks us not to lose sight of those details while having fun in our explorations, and not to lose sight of the fun while tending to the details.  😉

Most of the rest of the day proceeds without any notable astrological aspects, until around the witching hour the Moon squares Neptune in Pisces.  For those who are still awake at that hour, there may be an urge to escape reality for a bit, and if we are among those who imbibe intoxicants we should exercise more caution at that time, as we may be unusually inclined to escape into a bottle or other form of inebriant.  We should also be aware that this is a time when our impressions of the world may not be very accurate, and there is a high potential for us to be deceived by ourselves or others, whether or not that intention is intentional.  Thankfully, like all lunar aspects, this one is fleeting.

Astrology of January 3rd, 2017: Practical Hopes

 dragon-poster-style

While we are still under a dreamy Piscean Moon, today’s alignments put our feet back on the ground, for better or for worse.  That process of grounding started in the early morning hours today with the Moon in Pisces sextile to the Sun in Capricorn, putting any lingering romantic feelings and instincts left over from last night in harmony with our more practical consciousness.  Several hours later the Moon sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, adding Plutonian focus and intensity to what we feel, but with less of the controlling edge sometimes present in Moon/Pluto aspects.

Around mid-day Mercury in Capricorn sextiles Venus in Pisces, aligning our thoughts and communications with our pleasures and affections, and combining a practical, goal-oriented dedication with a desire for connective, spiritual experiences.  This is a great time to work on what matters to us, whether alone or as part of a team.

All of this makes the first half of the day a good time to think and communicate about what furthers our highest goals, and take positive actions in support of those goals, since we are likely to be enjoying the process and able to feel the transformative action of the changes in our lives in a harmonious way rather than feeling unsettled by them.  This morning and afternoon carry forward the flow state from yesterday in a way that we can harness, albeit with a certain rosy-glow in our attitude that may not be entirely realistic.  Still, the optimism that these alignments bring is refreshing and well worth enjoying.  Realism isn’t always the best tool for manifesting our dreams – we need some faith and hope in order to keep ourselves motivated and feel the value in our goals enough to achieve them, and these alignments deliver!

Unfortunately, this mood doesn’t last for the entire day, though the Mercury/Venus sextile may help to soften the discomfort of this evening’s Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius.  This placement of Saturn in Sagittarius has forced us to confront the shadow side of fervent belief and the divisive quality of us-versus-them attitudes when it comes to our most cherished ideals.  And the Moon in Pisces really wants nothing to do with that.  This Lunar placement is sensitive and spiritual, and it doesn’t want walls between us, and finds loud arguments disconcerting at best if not outright horrifying.  While there are certainly times for courage in standing up to demagoguery and fanaticism, tonight we may find ourselves feeling a bit raw and worn out by it all, and probably a bit depressed as well.  If it’s possible to take a strategic retreat now is a good time to do so, but if forced into confrontations that we are not yet equipped to handle we need to take a deep breath and remember that this too shall pass.  There is a time to fight, and a time to tend to our wounds, and tonight it’s important to be aware of which is which.

Astrology of December 23rd, 2016: Support from the Skies

 maia-detail-3-oil-effect

The Moon entered Scorpio this morning and now our emotions and instincts turn from a light balancing act in search of social harmony to something more focused and intense.  Our reactions to our world are now not so interested in accepting what’s on the surface, nor in contorting what we feel in order to keep that surface pretty.  This doesn’t mean that we’ll do an about-face and let it all hang out though – Scorpio likes its secrets, and prefers to keep them.  But it prefers to do so while ferreting out the secrets of others, because who holds the key to a mystery holds the key to its power, and Scorpio likes power.  Now is the time to delve into the deeper realms of our world, and the depths within ourselves as well.

This deep-dive process is supported beautifully today by two Lunar aspects, the first being a mid-day sextile to a practical Sun in Capricorn and the second being an afternoon trine to Mars in Pisces with its gentle, spiritual energy.  This is a nice way to lead up to the weekend, especially for those who celebrate Christmas or Hannukah.  For those of us who don’t, this still is a great energy to help us enjoy the season and wrap up the week in preparation for a quiet weekend at home or at the local Chinese restaurant.  😉

That Moon/Sun sextile gives us quiet, steady support between our focused reactions and the pursuit of our goals.  Both Scorpio and Capricorn can be highly driven and not particularly given to idle chatter, two of the many reasons these signs tend to get along well.  With both our unconscious and conscious selves working well together in these signs today, we have the capacity to tackle the hidden factors that influence our potential success or failure without becoming discouraged, and for those wrapping up last-minute shopping or simply wrapping up the remnants of 2016 in preparation for the New Year, this alignment can give us that extra push we need to get things done without burning out along the way.  Both luminaries operating across these two signs together create a recipe for sustained energy and the persistence to use it well.

The Moon in Scorpio trining Mars in Pisces continues the theme of sustaining energy, with Scorpionic focus lending consistency to the Piscean tendency to embrace opposites.  Mars in Pisces can sometimes feel distracted by its placement in this mutable water sign, and the Moon also governs patterns of fluctuations in tides and other natural cycles, so this alignment is not likely to feel as stable as the Moon/Sun sextile, especially since Scorpio’s classical ruler is Mars, tipping the balance of the trine more in Pisces’ favor.  Nonetheless, once we’ve got our sea legs, this alignment can help us to flow through the afternoon while still maintaining a sense of purpose and drive.

These two lovely alignments lead us into a weekend dominated by harmonious celestial activity, with the Scorpio Moon shining over most of it, so we have the opportunity to experience deep feelings and greater understanding via the ongoing Mercury retrograde while receiving an unusual amount of support from the skies.  2016 has a spark of kindness left in it after all.  😉
