Astrology Update, Full Moon in Libra, March 30th, 2018: Traveling Companions

This weekend’s Libra Moon opposite the Aries Sun draws attention to how we bring ourselves as individuals to relationships, and how we keep our sense of self intact while respecting others and maintaining social harmony. Our instincts under a Libra Moon are peaceful, diplomatic, and sociable, but our core selves under the Aries Sun are self-assertive and driven, even aggressive, so we may find our softer reactions feeling almost self-sabotaging, especially since this Full Moon coincides with a conjunction between Mars and Saturn in Capricorn in a T-Square formation with the Sun and the Moon. When Mars and Saturn join forces, we can find ourselves experiencing powerful frustration connected to obstacles both real and perceived in Capricorn’s material realms. That said, when patiently and consciously applied, the energies of these combined forces can yield a powerful drive to overcome those obstacles, and when we are certain what we are we willing to go the distance for, Saturn’s patience with process and Mars’ martial spirit can help us manifest real outcomes where we may have previously felt powerless to succeed. Mars can stir the courage to persevere in the face of our worst Saturnine fears, and Saturn can steady the reins of an otherwise rambunctious Mars.

Mercury’s retrograde through Aries brings him conjunct the Sun at this Full Moon, increasing both our conscious awareness during this process and encouraging us to think twice about where we have been im communicating our personal needs within relationships. With the Sun and Mercury both in Aries, we may find ourselves taking an executive tone and identifying strongly with our ideas, which the square to Mars/Saturn may lead us to defend far more fiercely than usual if challenged. With Saturn in the mix not only are we likely to find our ideas challenged, we can find those challenges stirring our deepest fears and insecurities. This is a time to take a deep breath and cultivate our ability to see the silver lining in whatever storm clouds rear their heads, and learn what lessons may come from a willingness to see more than one side of any story. And because the Sun and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo at this time, those lessons have the capacity to yield rich insights in connection with our karmic path, resulting in real progress in the ongoing journey of our souls. If we are willing to do the hard work that Mars and Saturn in Capricorn demand, we can weather any emotional and communicative upsets stirred up by these transits, and create lasting relationships of mutual benefit with our souls’ traveling companions that help clear the way before us in pursuit of our dearest long-term goals.

Astrology Update, April 9th, 2017: Where Have I Been? (Fun With Mercury Retrograde)

To those of you who missed my post that should have happened yesterday, I apologize for its absence, and offer the following as explanation:

While I don’t normally discuss my health problems in public, and generally try to work around them as much as possible so that they don’t disrupt my writing, speaking, or event appearances, over the past few months my health has gotten much worse.  I’ve wrestled with a combination of autoimmune and genetic disorders for a few years now, but in recent weeks they’ve become unruly enough to limit my activities significantly.  Again, I normally try to work around my symptoms wherever possible, as I’d rather not allow illness-imposed limitations to define me.  But this weekend has had me in some of the worst pain I’ve yet experienced, and while my dear friends at CoSM helped me to navigate it well enough to read Tarot for guests at this weekend’s Full Moon Gathering and beyond, my limited energy has forced me to make some hard choices regarding what I can and can’t do.

I had written a fair portion of yesterday’s analysis before the worst of the pain hit me, but eventually got to a point where I simply couldn’t focus on the screen anymore, and stayed in pain and distracted enough by it for the rest of the day that I could not return to my writing until today.  Given that yesterday saw the station of Mercury turning retrograde, it is perhaps appropriate that this was the day when I just couldn’t keep up with my writing alongside the Tarot readings and the health struggles – Mercury retrograde in Taurus is very concerned with what is practical, after all, and writing yesterday turned out to be a practical impossibility for me.

This should not be taken as an indication that I will not continue to write, as multiple people have indicated that these updates are helpful to them, and writing about the astrological events of the day is something that I generally find enjoyable.  However, this weekend’s experiences have made it clear to me that I can’t continue to be completely stoic in public about what I’ve been going through, and sometimes I have to drop one mode of service and communication for a bit in order to be able to maintain another.  I hope that these quiet intervals don’t detract too much from the overall flow of useful information for my readers here, and I appreciate your understanding as I navigate the more difficult spaces in my personal journey.

*******

Yesterday’s lunar activity was mostly in the very early morning hours, starting with the Moon in Virgo opposing Venus retrograde in Pisces, putting our rational, practical instincts and emotions at odds with our reassessment of our affections and modes of connecting with others.  For those of us who were still awake (or just waking) at that hour we may have found ourselves pulling back from connecting with others, or feeling more isolated, and reassessing our relationships as a result.  Our dreams may also have been affected by this influence, and it is worthwhile to note any dreams remembered for information that may be useful to us in navigating our relationships as we move forward through this retrograde period.

Within minutes of the Moon/Venus opposition the Moon in Virgo squared Saturn retrograde Sagittarius, reinforcing the continuing reverberations of the previous day’s Venus/Saturn square on an emotional and instinctive level, creating a T-square formation with Saturn as the release point for the tensions built up during the Moon/Venus opposition.  Since Saturn reinforces limitations, this is not an easy release point, but rather a reminder of the need for discipline and boundaries to help navigate challenging waters in our relations with others.

The Moon turned void-of-course with this configuration, emphasizing the need to reflect on the lessons of the aspects that we have experienced during the Moon’s transit through Virgo.  The void-of-course period is a reflective, receptive space in the lunar cycle, a time to ease down from our usual action-orientation and float in our unconscious for a while.  Since the Moon/Saturn square can have us feeling lonely and isolated, it can help to be with close family and friends during void-of-course periods, falling back into routine and waiting until the Moon enters the next sign before embarking on anything new.

Yesterday this period only lasted a few hours before the Moon entered Libra, still in the morning.  Our instinctive responses became less critical and fussy, and more concerned with peace and harmony, more interested in building and maintaining our relationships.  Since Libra is an air sign, it is still more cerebral than touchy-feely, more interested in the theory of emotion than getting in the thick of our messier feelings.  Libra is ruled by Venus, and carries forward some of the detail-orientation of Virgo by emphasizing a desire for beauty and harmony on all levels, which can lead the Libra Moon to be thrown off-balance by even minor disruptions in our environments.  The Libra Moon may be rational, but that doesn’t stop it from being romantic and idealistic, and we may find ourselves more easily distressed now by the discrepancy between how we want things to be and how they actually are.  That said, Libra eternally sees both sides of an equation, knows that there are multiple perspectives and multiple stories at work in any situation, and is obsessed with balancing the scales.  We may find ourselves far more concerned with what is “fair” now, and less quick to take action or make decisions without carefully weighing the consequences, especially those that affect other people.  Given Libra’s ruler Venus’ current retrograde, we may find that this Libra Moon is even less decisive, more caught up in considering and reconsidering our interactions with others and our feelings toward them.  Our aesthetic sense can be heightened by this transit, and so can our sociability, even with the lingering influence of the Venus/Saturn square and both of those planets’ retrogrades.  We may find that sociability a bit more awkward than is normal for a Libra Moon, but the instinct to pursue it is still there.

To add to the awkwardness, the late afternoon/early evening saw Mercury stationing retrograde in Taurus, bringing the number of planets currently retrograde up to four.  Mercury retrograde has a rough reputation in the popular consciousness as a time of technological and communication mishaps, and yes, it pays to be extra careful about backing up data, re-reading emails before we hit “send” and spending a bit more time on editing, and being cautious with travel plans and contracts.  With this retrograde crossing back over the first few degrees of Taurus and heading back into Aries, this is a time to reconsider our thoughts and communication in relation to practical matters in the physical world, including our bodily health for the Taurus portion of the retrograde (Taurus being very rooted in sensory experience and Mercury governing health and medicine), with the retrograde reflection turning to matters of personal will, focus, and identity later this month with the Aries portion of the retrograde.  With Taurus’ ruler Venus in retrograde as well, there may be a need to give extra consideration to how our communication impacts our relationships both in the practical world of Taurus and in the more self-concerned and action-oriented world of Aries.  Shared technology may especially be affected, with potential mishaps highlighting disparities between the communication needs of those sharing that tech.  For people with Mercurial temperaments or working in Mercury-related fields (health, media, teaching), this retrograde may feel slow and ponderous between now and the last week of April, and then suddenly feel more active (but also potentially more disruptive) during that last week of April and the first few days of May.  For Mercury-ruled signs (Gemini and Virgo) especially, Mercury retrograde can lead to feelings of being stuck, but it can also be a time to get off the treadmill of constant mental activity and communication, and it definitely pays to schedule more time for meditation and reflection now, so that we can move forward with more clarity when Mercury goes direct in May.  Seeing this time as an opportunity rather than an obstacle really does help.

Yesterday evening saw the Moon in Libra sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, giving some gentle support to our emotions and instincts from the more intense side of our unconscious, exploring the darkness within our beliefs without getting us too bogged down in it, instead helping us to gain a greater sense of wholeness regarding what we believe and how that impacts our feelings and our relationships.  We were likely to be drawn to spend more time with those who shared our beliefs last night, reinforcing tribal ties and enhancing our faith and optimism through our social connections.

Astrology Update, March 27th, 2017: New Moon in Aries

This morning started off early with the Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius and turning void-of-course, which can make for a dreary and frustrating way to start the day, not to mention a stereotypical Monday morning.  The Moon in hard aspect to Saturn tends to dredge up our fears and insecurities, leading to depression and even despair, or at the very least a sort of numbing sense of restriction.  Combined with the aimlessness of the void-of-course period, this made for a morning where the best course of action was sticking to our routines and not getting caught up in any bold new plans until the morning had progressed a few more hours.

Thankfully, later this morning the Moon entered Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a fresh new start, as Aries is energetic and action-oriented.  Our instincts during this lunar transit are brave and excited about life, interested in exploring new possibilities and treating life as one big adventure.  Though our tempers are a little shorter under an Aries Moon, so are our attention spans, so we aren’t likely to stay mad for long.  We’re also likely to be more straightforward during this time, more impatient and wanting to cut to the chase.  While we aren’t likely to lose all of the altruism fostered under the Pisces Moon, still we are more self-concerned and self-motivated now, seeking to make our mark on the world.  Personal ambitions are highlighted now, as is self-image.  Since Aries is ruled by Mars, physical activity is of greater interest as well – this is a good time to get out and enjoy the spring weather!

Speaking of Mars, the red planet is a player in one of the big astrological events of the day, with Mars in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces.  This puts our energy and drive that is currently operating on practical, material levels in a harmonious relationship with our hopes, dreams, ideals, and spiritual outlook.  This is a time for acting from a place of compassion without losing sight of our own self-interest, and being able to see the bigger picture even while we are engaged in very mundane and physical activities.  This is also a good time for enjoying sensory experience, and for relationships that are both sexual and spiritual, erotic and romantic.  Those of us engaged in esoteric studies are more likely to make good progress now, and those with more pragmatic outlooks may find the view improved by an unexpectedly rosy tint to the day.

To add to that rosiness, the Moon in Aries conjuncts Venus retrograde in Aries this afternoon.  Though Venus retrograde is less certain in her lust for life than when she is direct, still she is active and engaging, warm and affectionate, instinctively desiring companionship but still nobody’s pushover, and our emotions are now following her lead.  This is a time of new crushes and lively flirtation, and perhaps a bit more aggressive pursuit of who and what we desire.  If we’ve been hesitant before about such pursuit, now may be the time that we finally work up the guts to go for it, especially with the Mars/Neptune sextile adding both romantic and practical fuel to our fire.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trines Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, encouraging us to just surrender to the experiences of the day, though since this trine is in fiery signs, that surrender isn’t likely to be passive!  Rather, we may find ourselves happily swept along in a rush of fiery action, spirited and fervent and maybe a little breathless.  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on the unconscious level, so we may not even be aware of this dynamic, only later realizing that we’ve been riding a flame wave that may well have burned through more than a few inhibitions.  Black Moon Lilith is not a tame force by any stretch of the imagination, and following on the heels of the Moon/Venus conjunction and the Mars/Neptune sextile amplifies the erotic charge running through the air this afternoon and into the evening.  If indeed we did take advantage of the impetus from that Moon/Venus conjunction in pursuit of our desires, this Moon trine Black Moon Lilith may take the reins off unexpectedly.  Careful what you wish for…

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries plays out against this backdrop, along with the slowly tightening Jupiter/Pluto square that is currently under less than 1 degree of exactitude and will be exact by the end of this month.  The New Moon is a time for setting intentions to be grown through the lunar cycle, reaching fullness at the Full Moon and then being disseminated into the world as the Moon wanes.  At the New Moon the Moon conjuncts the Sun in the sky, no longer reflecting the Sun’s light but instead bringing unconsciousness and consciousness to work together, with our conscious intentions incubating in the darkness of the unconscious.  Against the backdrop noted above, the drive of both Moon and Sun in fiery Aries is great initiatory power, good for intentions regarding start-ups and bold new changes in our lives, but there is the potential for things to go a little wild in the process.  The encroaching power of the Jupiter/Pluto square reminds us that whatever we are planning is likely to have to contend with the ongoing conflict in our society between the desire for social harmony and the consolidation of power by wealthy and often hidden forces.  Faith and optimism versus greed and corruption.  Socio-political chickens coming home to roost.  No matter how personal our goals now, they are likely to become political, as the American Dream of shaping one’s own destiny is revealed to have been built on a legacy of oppression and lies, and the fable of democracy here drags down others with it abroad.

In addition, Venus retrograde’s reassessment of interpersonal interactions is happening in a sign that is impulsive and not always mindful of consequences, while the Jupiter/Pluto square is brimful with consequences, and since Venus is currently inconjunct the North Node in Virgo, there is a further disconnect between what we desire and the lessons needed by our souls.  On the plus side, Mercury in Aries is moving into a trine with Saturn in Sagittarius (exact in another couple days), so our minds are gaining the strength that comes with recognizing our limitations and the restrictions of reality, and applying Saturnine discipline to overcome obstacles.  This is a strength that we are going to need to set our intentions with this New Moon and make them stick.  This trine also resonates with a wider trine between Saturn and Uranus/Eris, so that our discipline is well aware of the Uranian rebellion and agitation that has been in and out of conflict with both Pluto and Jupiter in recent years, and we have the capacity to calmly work in alignment with the socio-political changes fomenting around us.

Since the ruler of this New Moon is Mars, currently in Taurus in a harmonious sextile with Neptune in Pisces, there is also some chance for our ideals to positively influence our practical efforts in connection with our New Moon intentions.  With Ceres in Taurus as well in a loose trine with Pluto in Capricorn, we should be mindful of how our intentions may nurture and nourish us, quite possibly on a very practical level.  Though the alignments of this New Moon do not create any notable configurations, nonetheless there is an interesting overall dynamic at work here, of balancing what we want versus what the surrounding reality is shaping, and keeping some measure of hope and idealism and even romanticism alive even as reality seems more and more grim.  Aries is a sign whose efforts can seem like a flash in the pan with its eagerness and impulsiveness, but against the backdrop of ongoing transcendental and generational drama and with Aries’ ruler Mars active in fixed Taurus via the Mars/Neptune sextile, there is the potential for a lot more staying power to the intentions we set now than is apparent at first blush.

Astrology Update, March 12th, 2017: Full Moon in Virgo

The day started off early with a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning, giving our emotions and instincts the support of the powerful and transformative forces in our lives.  For those of us sleeping at that time we may have experienced dreams with messages that can assist us in achieving our long-term goals in the material world.  For those of us awake during that time, we may have experienced an alignment between process and direction, increasing our understanding of the practical steps we need to take in service to our growth and ambition.  Regardless of sleeping or waking, our health may have gotten a transformative boost during this time, though that doesn’t automatically lead to feeling better, as sometimes healing processes can actually make us feel worse before we see improvement.

One of the two big astrological happenings of the day is this morning’s square between Mercury in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius.  We may experience issues with our communication throughout the day, unexpected limitations and restrictions in communications technology, or in our transportation.  This could manifest as a greater possibility of automobile accidents, but could just as easily show up as a decreased inclination to set foot outside of the house.  This aspect particularly calls to mind the ongoing problems with the United States’ “Muslim Ban” travel restrictions, and we may see more destructive consequences from that executive order today.  Regardless, the areas with the most potential for conflict today are communications and journeys that come up against restrictive belief systems and rules or laws based in those systems.  Since Mercury in Pisces makes us more inclined to be compassionate, this square heightens our frustration with these kinds of restrictions, and Pisces’ impetus to let go of what no longer serves us directs us to actively reject them.  Of course, Saturn in Sagittarius shows where we engage in such limiting behavior out of a sense of fear and insecurity disguised as righteous wrath, and Piscean gentleness and sensitivity may be hard-pressed to stand up in the face of that.  Pisces also governs escapism, and many of us may simply want to run away from the abrasive restrictions that we are confronted with today.  Our best chance for navigating this aspect is in exercising patience and self-discipline alongside compassion and intuition, and recognize that there is an opportunity for change here.

That change is connected with whatever we saw ourselves needing to get rid of at the time of the New Moon, whatever patterns we needed to complete in order to prepare ourselves for new beginnings in our lives.  The intentions that we set then are coming to their fullness today with this morning’s Full Moon in Virgo.  Full Moons are a time to fully understand the intentions set at the New Moon on both the conscious and unconscious level, perfect them, and then release them into the world to be disseminated for the duration of the next two weeks until the next New Moon.  Since the New Moon that we set our intentions at for this Full Moon coincided with the Annular Solar Eclipse in Pisces, those intentions actually have a much longer period of effect, spreading out over the next six months to the time of the Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st, 2017.  Today’s Full Moon in Virgo then has our instincts filled with awareness of the many details involved in our process of growth and healing between now and then, with the sense of seriousness and discipline that Saturn imparts mediating between our unconscious instincts and our Piscean consciousness striving to integrate those Virgoan details into the whole picture, blending and unifying our individual goals and struggles into a more compassionate vision of wholeness.  Because Saturn is squaring both the Moon in Virgo and Mercury in Pisces today, health issues are likely to come to the forefront, particularly those that are difficult to diagnose and cure, such as chronic illnesses, including autoimmune disorders.  Our sense of process under this Full Moon is more fraught with difficulty and prone to depression, and our escapist tendencies may feel more out-of-control than usual, with addiction potentially being a key component.  Detoxification is a necessity at this time, and it is definitely a good day for spring cleaning to aid in ridding ourselves of whatever may be holding us back.

Because the Moon in Virgo quincunxes Uranus in Aries at the time of the Full Moon, sudden change is also a hallmark of both our experiences today and the Full Moon’s effects over the next couple of weeks.  We may find ourselves feeling especially rebellious in the face of the issues brought up under this Moon, and may take actions that we never expected of ourselves.  Or, those around us may believe that we are behaving unusually, even radically, and may take exception to our behavior as being unnecessarily provocative, even if we have no conscious intentions to provoke.  Today may feel unstable and unruly as a result, and we would do well to expect the unexpected over the next two weeks.  The Sun is also inconjunct (quincunx) Jupiter at the time of the Full Moon, not exact, but still in orb to affect the overall dynamic today and during this Moon’s disseminating period, and together with the Moon/Uranus inconjunct creates a closed formation that amplifies the energies of both the Full Moon and these quincunxes, increasing the uncomfortable, volatile feeling of this Moon, and tying the personal struggle for completion and healing into the larger struggle for balance between the personal need for freedom and the societal need for harmony and balance in interpersonal relationships.

This afternoon the Moon in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, continuing the emphasis on understanding the painful and traumatic patterns of our lives and how they have led us to our current state of ill-health, whether physical, mental, or emotional, personal or societal.  Now we are likely to see the little pieces in our history that contribute to the overall pattern, and gain a greater understanding of what parts of our past we need to make peace with in order to progress into a better future.  Difficult family histories are emphasized at this time, as well as the ways in which we feel better-equipped to help others than help ourselves, and we may struggle now with blurred personal boundaries that contribute to our pain.  On the plus side, our heightened awareness of these issues now increases the possibility of working through them, freeing ourselves of the chains of the past.

The Moon in Virgo squares Saturn in Sagittarius tonight and then shortly thereafter opposes Mercury in Pisces, creating a T-square aspect with today’s Mercury/Saturn square, with Saturn acting as the release point between Mercury and the Moon, as we strive to balance what we think and what we feel.  Saturn tends to create a deep sense of seriousness and even depression when in aspect to either the Moon or Mercury, so tonight we may find ourselves in a deep well of thought and feeling that if we are not careful can suck us down into despair.  Our fears and insecurities are likely to be heightened, feeling the pressure of the balancing act between thought and feeling, conscious awareness and unconscious reaction.  We may see the big picture but have trouble reacting in any way that does not stay mired down in details.  Or, we may know intuitively what we want and need, yet find it hard to master the process that will achieve what we desire.  Perhaps we need to steer ourselves away from a self-defeating perfectionism, but haven’t figured out how to halt our compulsions in their tracks, and the gloomy voice of time and mortality suggest that perhaps we never will.  The important part of navigating this difficult aspect configuration is to be patient with ourselves, staying mindful that no matter how dire things may seem, all is temporary.  Taking actions that help us to cultivate healthy habits can be incredibly helpful now in keeping us focused on growth and progress without getting lost in negativity.  This is especially true since the Moon/Mercury opposition starts a void-of-course period that can leave us feeling a bit lost – sticking to routine and focusing on the better side of habit tonight is the best course of action during this time.

Late tonight the Moon enters Libra, turning our instincts and emotions toward partnership and social harmony.  We may find that now we do not want to be alone, and for those of us in relationships our partners may help us in sorting through the feeling and revelations from this tumultuous day.  For those of us who are alone, we may find more solace in the arts and movement, as Libra is a Venus-ruled sign.  Regardless, this is a sign that is more dependent on surroundings, with or without people, so the next couple of days are good for further spring cleaning, as well as taking actions to promote balance in our lives and our environments.  We may find ourselves exercising decorative impulses, or taking more interest in our appearance, though we should be mindful that since Libra’s ruler Venus is currently in retrograde, what we are attracted to now may not be what we stay attracted to when Venus turns direct in April, so extreme make-overs might not be of lasting benefit.  Beware of impulse-buying at this time.  In business and leisure both, connecting with other people is favored under this Moon, so now is a good time to get out and meet with people, whether strengthening already-established connections or making new friends.  The Libra Moon can help us to balance the opposites we’ve been juggling recently, and perhaps give us some of the peace and harmony we’ve been craving.

Astrology Update, February 27th, 2017: Reforging Identity

The astrological activity started in the early morning hours today with the Moon in Pisces sextiling Pluto in Capricorn, giving a boost of power to our emotions from the larger forces in our lives.  Our instincts may turn toward the practical, strengthening our reactions in relation to our goals, careers, and reputations, so for the early risers among us heading to work before sunrise this is a bonus that may give a great start to the day, setting the mood for accomplishment while maintaining our sensitive and intuitive feelings that help us to be aware of the larger picture and how the attainment of our goals affects those around us.

As the morning progresses the awareness of individual desires versus social harmony is sharpened due to the big astrological aspect of the day, Mars in Aries opposing Jupiter in Libra.  Our energy and drive is purely self-motivated today, bold and aggressive and wanting action, yet bumping up against a magnified concern with maintaining peace and order and amicable relationships.  Today we are likely to see situations arise where we are forced to acknowledge the areas in which these forces conflict, and in the process become more aware of the challenges in balancing these two, learning how to integrate these opposing forces as a result.  What are our own beliefs about peace and harmony in relation to others, and where do these conflict with getting things done in our own lives?  Where do society and our relationships demand compromise that our individual focus is no longer willing to tolerate?  Where does conflict arise as a result of trying to please too many people at once?  When are we no longer willing to act as doormats just to keep the peace?  And how do we bring our actions as individuals into the public sphere in a way that harmonizes with others without sacrificing our identities and needs as individuals?  Because Mars tends to stir things up and highlight conflicts, and Jupiter expands whatever he touches, we may see increased conflict today, tempers flaring.  We may find ourselves struggling with rage, especially for those of us who have kept our aggressive feelings buried, and now it is likely to spill out into social arenas and interpersonal relationships.  We may also experience troubles in relation to authority since Jupiter is the ruling figure of the zodiac.  Legal battles may turn heated and require extra diplomacy to navigate successfully – it is unwise to be the aggressor at this time, yet neither should we cave, as this aspect requires a balance of focused action and willingness to mediate and compromise.  Our religious beliefs may also be challenged at this time, or we may find ourselves challenged by religious orthodoxy, as Jupiter governs institutions of faith.  Of course, for those who are already more secure in balancing individual desires within the societal framework, today may provide a powerful boost of energy that feeds accomplishment in dealing with the-powers-that-be.  Jupiter is optimistic and benevolent after all, and if we can keep our aggression firmly harnessed in service of focus on our goals, we may find that this aspect gives us the extra impetus we need to achieve our aim, especially when what we are aiming for serves the common good.

Toward mid-day we may find that the issues raised by the Mars/Jupiter opposition require that we fall back on our more well-established skills and thought patterns.  Though yesterday’s eclipse emphasized making a break with the past, still we may find ourselves thinking and communicating with nostalgia during this time, or with people from our past, though still mindful of the future as Mercury in Pisces conjuncts the South Node and opposes the North Node.  Regardless, how we think about our karmic path and our purpose in life is highlighted now, especially in relation to how that path and purpose are shaped by our past and by our family history, as well as by societal patterns.  Thanks to this Nodal activation, some of the conflicts coming up today in relation to the Mars/Jupiter opposition are likely to be related to our history and karmic baggage, both on the interpersonal and societal levels.  How have past injustices shaped who we are and what we face today?  How do we address our history and move forward in unity while still honoring the needs of individuals and minorities among us?  Our minds will be in a prime position to address these questions during this time, and compassionate communications regarding history and social connections are favored at this time.

This kind of thought and communication is further emphasized by the Moon in Pisces conjuncting Chiron in Pisces within minutes of the Mercury/South Node conjunction, bringing past trauma to the foreground of our emotions and reactions.  We become more attuned to the toxic patterns in our lives as a result, more sensitive and aware of both the damage and the need and means for healing.  Therapeutic efforts that emphasize communication are likely to get a boost from this aspect, as well as any active efforts to redress old wrongs.  Since the conjunction is a hard aspect, those of us with health concerns may find ourselves struggling with flare-ups at this time, but we are also likely to have a greater instinctive awareness of what needs to be done to remedy such ills, especially when that awareness can be shared with and benefit others like us with similar problems.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius, potentially casting a more somber mood.  Saturn in Sagittarius already limits the optimism of this Jupiter-ruled sign, and with Jupiter embattled by Mars today, our optimism and faith are likely to feel hard-pressed to muster against a challenge from the Piscean Moon coming off of its own challenge from Chiron.  It’s important to be mindful of the potential for burnout at this time in connection with the Mars/Jupiter opposition, as the one-two punch of the Moon in hard aspect to first Chiron and then Saturn may bring us face-to-face with our own limitations on an emotional and instinctive level, and we may find ourselves needing to call it a day much earlier than we might otherwise like.  Depression is a distinct likelihood at this time, and we may feel victimized or have to come to grips with our sense of martyrdom.  Since embattled Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, our emotions aren’t likely to be getting much help from that end, and our optimism may find itself at an all-time low.  Escapism into alcohol or drugs is a real risk at this time, so it’s important to make time for self-care and remember that this too shall pass.

Since the Moon turns void-of-course with the Moon/Saturn square, this evening we would do well to fall back on routine and use the unfocused and dreamy quality of this time to tend to small, mundane tasks, or quiet conversation with friends and loved ones at home, or more introspective activities.  Some downtime is likely needed after this day.

That said, the night does not end quietly, as the Moon enters Aries late tonight, turning our emotions active, aggressive, and self-focused.  This is a more ego-driven placement for the Moon, and we are likely to take a “me first” attitude as a result.  Of course, this is not entirely a bad thing, as the push-pull between social and individual concerns during the past couple of months may require that we do some restructuring and rebuilding of our identities as a result.  Aries isn’t just about selfishness – having a strong sense of self is absolutely necessary to be able to navigate this physical plane, and we don’t tend to be much good at helping others around us if we forget to take care of ourselves.  Aries is very much about action and heroism, leaping in to save the day when all seems lost, and defeating monsters both within and without.  The Aries archetype is the warrior, and the warrior’s first battle is always with the self, shaping and honing the identity in preparation to meet the world.  And after this day, chances are that we need a strong sense of self to be able to continue and not collapse into the pain and sadness that so many challenging aspects may have raised.  Aries has an inherent sense of wonder, being the youngest sign of the zodiac, and like a child and hero both, wants to set out into the world to explore and adventure.

The final aspect of the night is a trine between the Moon in Aries and Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, emphasizing these Aries lessons in the most beneficial way, submerging our unconscious in an optimistic will to expand our understanding and experience of the world and boldly face whatever chimera await.  Black Moon Lilith is simultaneously focused and surrendering, the Yin counterpart to Mars’ Yang.  The Moon in Aries is eager for adventure and self-testing, and will rush in where angels fear to tread, unafraid of whatever darkness Lilith can dredge up in the realm of our philosophies and beliefs, and the two of them allied together gird us to do battle in the service of our highest ideals, reforged on an emotional and instinctive level to face tomorrow.

All aspect times used in creating this post are calculated for Pacific Standard Time.  I tend to speak in broad terms when I reference time on this blog, referring to time-frames like “morning” or “afternoon” rather than specific times, since I still have a lot of friends on the East Coast who read these posts and I’d like them to be pertinent to those friends as well as folks here on the West Coast.  Readers from further abroad will need to adjust time-frames accordingly.
