Astrology Update, April 15th, 2018, New Moon in Aries: Flowering Desires

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries falls between Uranus and Eris, within orb to be conjunct to both. New Moons align the consciousness of the Sun with the instincts and emotions of the Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon, creating potent opportunities for new beginnings. The two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon are a time for growing the seeds of intention planted at the New Moon.

The potential for new beginnings at this New Moon is heightened by the conjunction to Uranus, which brings the power of sudden insight and radical change. The conjunction to Eris combined with Mercury stationing direct at this time emphasizes a need for honesty in communication, which the Aries placement strengthens. Since Uranus operates as the higher expression of Mercury, the potential for sudden insight from unexpected directions is amplified, along with the need to apply lessons from this recent retrograde to communications regarding that insight as we move forward.

This New Moon also sees a Triangle of Potential between Jupiter in Scorpio opposite Venus in Taurus with Jupiter sextile Pluto in Capricorn and Pluto trining Venus. Capricornian Pluto in the mix may help mitigate the self-indulgence associated with Jupiter opposite Venus or it could intensify it, but regardless we are likely to experience heightened optimism and desire for the good things in life, with all of the powerful, earthy sensuousness that Venus in her home sign of Taurus brings to the table being ramped up by the combined forces of Jupiter and Pluto. That Jupiter/Pluto combination can bring hidden feelings to the forefront now, so if you’ve been quietly carrying a torch for someone, now is the perfect time to express those feelings.

The Triangle of Potential magnifies our desires and the capacity to manifest what we want on both a practical and emotional level, and in combination with the Sun/Moon conjuncting and bridging Uranus/Eris during the Mercury station emphasizing the need for both change and honest communication, gives us an opportunity to make major improvements in our lives that serve our own needs but can also strengthen our connections with others. Mars in Capricorn sextiles Neptune in Pisces now, aligning our efforts with our ideals, enhancing sensuality, and helping to keep our actions compassionate. This combination of alignments makes this a lovely New Moon for taking new steps in relationships, especially those of a romantic nature, and also makes this a great time for embarking on new creative endeavors.

Astrology Update, Full Worm Moon in Virgo, March 1st, 2018: Turning the Soil

What intentions we have sown in the darkness of the New Moon now are fully revealed as the Sun’s light reveals the face of the Full Moon.  With the Sun in Pisces conjunct that sign’s transcendental ruler Neptune, and part of a stellium with Mercury, Venus, and Chiron in Pisces as well, our consciousness is fully steeped in intuition and empathy, unusually sympathetic to those less fortunate than ourselves but also more inclined to see with rose-coloured glasses, and thus more easily deceived by our own romanticized vision and the unscrupulous.  With the Moon opposite Neptune, glamor is in high-gear tonight but so is escapism, and with the Moon in communicative Virgo, theatre and movies are especially favored.

With Venus conjunct Mercury in Pisces and both of them trining Jupiter in Scorpio, the glamor and sociability are heightened even more, but with Mars in Sagittarius squaring Mercury and Venus, what we say and what we do may well not match up – we are likely to find ourselves challenged to walk our talk, especially where our ideals are concerned.  Since the Moon in Virgo brings out our most practical instincts and our perfectionism, we may struggle now with the dichotomy between our more selfless leanings and the realities that we bump up against in our desire to connect with and give to others.  Unfortunately, both Virgo and Pisces can have a tendency to play the victim, so we may find ourselves feeling taken advantage of now, whether or not this is actually the case, and may wind up bemoaning our fate more than usual now (or have to listen to others doing so!).  This Virgo Moon is ruled by Mercury, and both emboldened by the trine to Jupiter and embattled by the square to Mars, our minds and mouths may well find themselves biting off more than we can chew, especially if we let our imaginations run away with us, as that pile-up of planets and the Sun conjunct Neptune are wont to do.  It is especially important now to listen well and think before we speak, lest words that we intended to unite wind up dividing instead.

Pluto in Capricorn sextile Mercury can help to steady that imagination now, keeping our thoughts connected to our more practical goals and the structure they can provide, an anchor of determination in a sea of Piscean dreams.  Since the Virgo Moon is an earthy Moon, we are not rudderless in all of that water either.  Virgo is known for its attention to detail in pursuit of perfection, and its dedication to process and growth.  This Moon is known as the “Worm Moon” for its connection to the early spring return of earthworms to turn and renew the soil and feed the birds, and so now is a good time to pay close attention to what our bodies tell us, and tend to our health and nutrition.  Having Neptune conjunct the Sun and opposing the Moon can make it harder for us to clearly see the details that a Virgo Moon normally calls attention to, so it can be helpful now to use Virgoan habits like cleaning, cooking, and gardening as meditative aids, using their structure as a container for all of that Piscean overflow.  Spring cleaning and letting go of things that we no longer need is especially favored now, decluttering our lives in order to have room for our goals to flourish.

There is a monastic quality to the Virgo/Pisces axis that encourages simplifying the mundane life in order to strengthen the spiritual life, tending to the body in order to aid the soul – the original purpose of yoga.  While the Mercury/Venus trine to Jupiter can increase our self-indulgent qualities now, perhaps we would do well to luxuriate in simple things during this Full Moon.  That Jupiter trine in combination with Neptune in hard aspect to both Sun and Moon amplifies our spiritual yearnings now, as well as our faith and trust, despite the challenges of the Mars square, and literally walking the path may be the best way to see it more clearly.  This is a good time to recognize that both forest and trees are worth experiencing, both soil and sea, both in perfect detail and impressionistic blur.  What we choose to communicate about that experience and how we connect in the process may require extra care now, but for the sake of both temporary enjoyment and the longer course of our souls’ journey that care is well worth the time.

Astrology Update, Solar Eclipse, February 15th, 2018: Creating New Stories

Today has offered us a New Moon with a Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.  Though visible only to parts of South America and Antarctica, this eclipse has already been felt for a few days now by those of us with luminaries, personal planets, or personal points in the 3rd decanate of Aquarius, and will continue to be felt for a while to come.  That’s the thing about eclipses – the big results in our lives tend not to show up on the day of the eclipse, but instead unfold over the next six months, until the time of the next eclipse.

The last Solar Eclipse was in Leo on August 21st of 2017, indicating changes in core identity and self-expression – that eclipse was personal and creative, and that creativity is mirrored and progressed as we move forward into this new eclipse season.  This eclipse in Aquarius indicates changes in group relations and the causes that capture our imaginations and our dedication, with strong idealist and populist overtones.  The personal changes effected as a result of the Leo Solar Eclipse have consequences that are being carried forward to effect changes on a larger social scale during the six months following this Aquarian Solar Eclipse.

Solar eclipses underscore the extent to which the hidden forces of our instincts can impel deep personal change by casting their shadow on the light of consciousness.  The Sun//Moon conjunction of the New Moon is astrology’s most powerful aspect, a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned.  Thus, new seeds of intention are best planted at the New Moon, when these forces within us are in sync.  The Solar Eclipse gives our intuitive side an edge over our more logical side, triggering situations that can offer us a fresh start in whatever area of our lives the eclipse touches through its contact with our natal charts.

This eclipse is conjoined with Mercury and Juno in Aquarius, emphasizing communication and mature partnerships.  Mercury in combination with the Sun and Moon combines intelligence with will and instinct, so there is a good potential for thoughtful and creative planning to guide us forward during this eclipse season, and Juno’s presence makes it likely that our plans require mutually beneficial relationships and shared emotional intelligence to thrive.  That said, it pays to remember that Mercury is a trickster god, playful but also amoral.  This is the Magician archetype in the Tarot, willing to experiment with whatever is at hand regardless of consequence if it furthers his aims.  This is also a storyteller aspect, and with the Sun and Moon sextiling Uranus in Aries that story is likely to have a few unexpected twists and turns, but with Jupiter in Scorpio squaring Mercury, we can expect more than a bit of pulp sensationalism in this narrative, and should take care not to leave the proverbial Caps Lock on lest we turn our creative dialogs into unintentional shouting matches.  With Jupiter sextiling Pluto, there is power behind the bombast, and we may find our Magician storyteller called to stand up to authority.  These next six months are a good time to craft new narratives, a time favoring writers and content creators ready to take bold new steps, create new stories, and build the alliances needed to get those stories seen and heard by those most in need of them.

Venus in Pisces sextiles Saturn in Capricorn today, underscoring the need to create and maintain stable relationships, with both planets inconjunct to Ceres in Leo, creating a Yod formation (“the finger of God”) that points to how we nurture and express our core selves within those relationships.  Venus in Pisces is sympathetic and adaptable, and harmonizes well with Saturn in Capricorn’s sober pragmatism, both putting pressure on Ceres in Leo’s hunger for a solo spotlight.  We are not being asked to dissolve our egos in relationship, however, for the mature and socially conscious partnerships called for by Juno in Aquarius not only allow for individuality and eccentricity, they encourage these qualities.  The Yod to Ceres does not negate the spotlight; it enhances it, and asks us to create relationships that feed our needs as individuals as a means to a better collective, a greater social vision that recognizes and upholds the rights of all, and gives us all a place to shine.

Mars in idealistic and social Sagittarius trines the North Node in Leo, giving further impetus to this alliance of our core creative and karmic needs with our social consciousness, but Mars also squares Neptune in Pisces today, increasing the potential for deceptive action, seduction, and subterfuge, as well as accidents or harmful actions involving water.  Mars conjunct Vesta increases our idealistic focus, and we may find ourselves engaged in such aggressive pursuit of our goals that we forget to look before we leap, or run afoul of those wishing to take advantage of our idealism for their own nefarious purposes.  Thankfully, Pallas in Taurus trine Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn enhances our cool-headed planning capacity, giving us the ability to step back and assess our circumstances dispassionately, should we choose to make use of it.  The airy detachment that the Aquarian Sun, Moon, and Mercury are famous for is being bolstered by earthy practicality wielded in alignment with divine vision, giving us the capacity to seize our fate with both hands and use our united minds and hearts to create it anew.

Astrology Update, Lunar Eclipse, January 31st, 2018: Lordly Due

Full Moons are normally a time when the intentions we set two weeks earlier at the New Moon are coming into fruition.  This Full Moon just happens to feature a Lunar Eclipse in Leo, so rather than simply casting the light of the Sun’s consciousness upon our usual emotions, instincts, and cycles, we now find that our most hidden feelings are coming to the surface, revealing our suppressed emotions and reactions and past situations that have planted the seeds for what we feel now.

As eclipses operate on a six month axis, now is a time to wipe our emotional slates clean, freeing ourselves of whatever emotional baggage we have accumulated in the past six months, especially when it comes to how we express our emotions and how our emotions reveal our innermost truths and make them ripe for the sharing. This Moon very closely conjuncts the asteroid Ceres retrograde, placing emphasis on how we nurture ourselves and others with our feelings and instinctual reactions.  We may find this to be an exceptionally “hungry” Moon, demanding, consuming, unwilling to take “no” for an answer.  The Moon conjunct a retrograde Ceres also brings issues of motherhood to the forefront, particularly those in which nurturance becomes dominating or smothering.  Old wounds from our families of origin may bubble to the surface now.

Black Moon Lilith still loosely conjunct Pluto in Capricorn gives further fuel to the Dark Mother archetype, and with Black Moon Lilith squaring the conjunction of Eris with Uranus in Aries, we may find our mother issues generating sudden disruptions to our lives that feel like they’ve been set in motion by the hands of fate.  With both Black Moon Lilith and Pluto still sextile Jupiter in Scorpio, we may yet be able to summon a practical capacity for objectively and even optimistically assessing the transformations we are experiencing at this time, but Jupiter’s touch continues to magnify their power and their depth, no matter what equanimity we are able to muster on the surface.

This Moon also loosely conjuncts the North Node, increasing the long-term importance of what we learn from these emotional revelations, and warning us against intemperate action based on eclipse-driven impulses.  The Sun loosely conjuncting Venus and the South Node in Aquarius at this time amplifies our capacity for openness, friendliness, and insights regarding social connections yet also increases the likelihood of run-ins with old loves or social circles that we have drifted away from, but with the Moon also inconjunct Neptune at this time it is likely that such encounters will only increase confusion and disenchantment, as Neptune in Pisces encourages the dissolution of boundaries that our hearts need for security as we carve out our emotional realm, and Neptune’s slippery, illusory glimmer is likely to create some bewildering territory to trip up our bold leonine instincts.

This is not a Full Moon that it is easy to find the benefits of, with the intensity and capacity for unforeseen disruptions that tend to accompany eclipses combined with the ferocity and resistance to change of our surfacing emotions.  In particular we may find ourselves confronting our innermost feelings regarding the attention that we do or do not receive from others, wondering “when will my time in the spotlight come?” or, just as easily feeling deeply uncomfortable from an excess of attention in a time or place where we would rather fade into the woodwork.  I always say that the best way to wrangle Leos is to give them whatever they consider to be their “lordly due,” whatever they need to feel most recognized and able to shine as their truest selves, and this eclipsed Leo Moon is demanding its emotional “lordly due” – recognition of the full truth of what we feel, no matter how difficult those feelings might be.

Astrology Update, Full Moon, January 1st, 2018 (Wolf Moon): Drinking Desire

The upcoming Full Moon on January 1st is an emotional powerhouse, starting off the New Year with a deep exploration of where our feelings and our attractions vie for prominence in our relationships, with our deepest feelings and connections driving the actions that will make all the difference as we forge our karmic paths.

Full Moons are the culmination of energies and intentions set in motion at the preceding New Moon.  In this case, that would have been the December 18th, 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius, which was conjunct Saturn at 29 degrees, amplifying the emotional impact of the lessons of Saturn in Sagittarius over the past few years, just before Saturn’s entry into Capricorn the next day.  New Moons are about new beginnings, but Saturn’s presence emphasized the need to complete old business in order to start with the new, including the necessity of getting rid of what we no longer need, letting go of habits and relationships that no longer serve us.  This emphasis was amplified by the Winter Solstice following closely on the heels of that New Moon, with the Sun and Saturn conjunct at 0 degrees Capricorn, a conjunction that last occurred in 1664, giving the Winter Solstice a fateful feeling that the newfound energy of practical manifestation stirred by Saturn’s entry into Capricorn would affect our paths not simply for that day or the upcoming year, but for centuries and lifetimes to come.

This Full Moon therefore is the emotional counterpoint to that fateful and achievement-oriented New Moon, putting what we are manifesting in our practical endeavors in the context of our feelings.  Saturn is about lengthy, laborious processes, and whatever we felt called to set in motion at the December New Moon and the Winter Solstice needs to be something that fills our hearts and souls completely, or we simply won’t be able to maintain the will to grind through all obstacles for however long it takes us to complete this task.  Saturn is also about karma, the physical and metaphysical reactions to what we think and do and say in this world.  There is a weight and portentousness to the goals we aspire to under Saturn’s guidance.  Do we really want to take the karmic risks that such goals entail without actually feeling deeply about them?   How do we feel about the legacies of our actions over the course of our lifetimes, and the lifetimes thereafter?

Since the Moon is in Cancer those endeavors must also be seen in the context of our families and communities.  It’s not enough to set big goals in the physical world, nor to have the Saturnine/Capricornian willingness to climb any mountain to achieve them; the goals we set need to stir our feelings deeply but they also need to enhance our sense of interpersonal connection, or they’re not really worth a damn.  How does what we are doing affect those we care about?  How does it affect the people who nurture us, even those within our neighborhoods and social circles whose choices nurture us without our knowing them?  And how do we feel about the ripples of consequence that our actions will have in the larger world?

The Full Moon opposing Venus puts an emphasis on relationships, with full, sentimental Cancerian emotions but also a practical, earthy approach by Venus; there will be a desire for security and sticking to familiar ground.  Wild, new relationships or over-stimulating surroundings are not favored by the Capricornian Venus, nor by the homebody Cancerian Moon, yet there is an amplification of sexual desire created by Venus’ sextile to Mars, who also trines the Moon as part of a Kite formation, so both our emotions and our need for physical affection are feeling the call to action now, and we may find ourselves driven to extremes by the Scorpionic Mars attempting to reconcile the disparity between the two.  The Moon/Venus opposition creates a challenge between our emotions and our style of relating and experiencing affection, and there is a very real possibility of misplaced affections, unwanted sexual attention, or unrequited love.  However, the Kite formation that this is a part of offers the keys to meeting this challenge, the cosmic and personal tools available for use in solving the problems it draws our attention to, and relationships that come under the spotlight now have a good potential to grow and be strengthened as a result.

Within the body of the Kite is a Grand Water Trine between the Moon in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces, and Jupiter/Mars in Scorpio.  The Moon trine Neptune creates romantic devotion, though this may be based more on fantasy than reality.  There is a self-sacrificing quality to this devotion, a desire to immerse oneself in the beloved, whether that beloved is a person or a creative project or a spiritual path or a social cause.  Since the trine is a harmonious aspect, the Neptunian urge to dissolve boundaries is less likely to be damaging than with a hard aspect, but it can still make for some potentially unsettling experiences, especially on the subconscious level, and particularly sensitive souls may feel the need to hide away at home or in other safe, familiar surroundings.  Given that this Full Moon follows on the heels of New Year’s Eve revelry, there is a heightened likelihood that overindulgence on that night leads to the need to stay home the next day and nurse one’s hangover, whether physical or emotional…

Intuition is heightened by this trine, with Jupiter amplifying the intuitive connection between spiritual Neptune and the instinctive, emotional Moon, and giving us a sense of faith in the truth of what we feel.  Mars in the mix gives courage and the impetus to action, with the sextile from Mars to Venus intensifying sexual attraction, and since Mars is in Scorpio, one of the two signs he rules, his action under this Full Moon is focused, directed, potentially hidden, and on occasion even ruthless.  The conjunction with Jupiter encourages grand gestures with deep meaning and impact, not simply big, showy displays with no substance.  Mars in Scorpio is not interested in half-measures!

Jupiter trining Neptune not only amplifies intuition but also generosity toward those less fortunate than ourselves.  The downside of this is the potential to be taken for a ride by unscrupulous and deceptive types, emotional vampires and addicts seeking a fix, or authority figures abusing their power, rather than those who are truly deserving of our largesse.  On the upside is the powerful spiritual awareness created by this trine, an awareness that is not merely cerebral but instead opens our hearts to a larger feeling for humanity as a whole and our universal interconnectedness.  Given the Moon/Venus challenge on a personal level, this is a time when we may gain a heightened understanding of how the personal is political, and how the challenges we face one-on-one mirror the challenges we face as a species.  Thankfully, that Grand Water Trine in this kite gives us the emotional tools for meeting those challenges, so we may well gain keys to solving larger world problems from the lessons we learn in our personal relationships at this time.

The Jupiter/Mars conjunction squaring the North Node stimulates and amplifies action in relation to our karmic paths, further emphasizing the sense of fatefulness carrying forward from Saturn’s touch on the New Moon and coming into fullness now, and underscoring the mirroring action between our personal relationship experiences and our connections on a planetary and universal scale.  Whatever intensity and conflict we may experience at this time has the impetus to be resolved with love and compassion, and we are likely to feel the impact of that resolution for some time to come.
