Astrology Update, April 26th, 2017: New Moon in Taurus

The New Moon in Taurus this morning sets the stage for a quiet and kindly day, a time for re-attuning ourselves to our own basic physical, material, and emotional needs.  The New Moon is a time to set our intentions for this lunar cycle, intentions which we grow between now and the Full Moon, when we release them into the world to be disseminated over the course of the next two weeks until the following New Moon.  This New Moon is a special one because it has no planetary aspects and only a loose trine to the North Node, as mentioned last night, so it is largely free of outside influences, and that loose trine is a benevolent connection to our soul’s path, adding to the sense that this New Moon can act as a good “reset” period in which we can set aside more complicated concerns and tend to ourselves first and foremost, a time in which what feels good to us is also what can help forward our karmic progress.

Taurus deals with our needs in the material world, what gives us a sense of security and physical well-being, which in turn affects our emotional well-being via the Moon.  This is a good time for taking care of our health, our self-esteem, our homes, our gardens, and our bank accounts.  Since Taurus is a fixed earth sign it tends to be slow-moving and patient, understanding of the process of things, and with the Moon here it is very aware of seasons and cycles.  Under this influence we can take small steps that will slowly accumulate and eventually have lasting impact.  What we tend to now should be mindful of the long-term – the goals we set now are those which we should be comfortable living with both the process and outcome of for years to come.

Since Taurus is ruled by Venus, it is worthwhile to note where she is now, sweet and sensual in the sign of Pisces, and in a state of mutual reception with Jupiter retrograde in Libra – Venus is the ruler of Libra, and Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, so while the mutual reception between them is not strong now due to the wide orb between them, still it is a gentle connection between the two Benefics of the zodiac that may aid in the fortunate outcome of our intentions during this lunar cycle.

After the exact New Moon this morning there is no further astrological activity for most of the day until the Moon in Taurus sextiles Neptune in Pisces tonight, adding to the sympathetic feeling of this New Moon.  Neptune can encourage us to put on our rose-coloured glasses, so it is not a time for precision thinking, but the sextile is a gently harmonious aspect that brings out the better qualities in both the Moon and Neptune, enhancing our feelings of spiritual connection and compassion, and helping us to be more loving to both ourselves and others while shedding old habits and ties that no longer serve us, rebuilding our foundations with patience and a touch of sweetness.  This is a time for healing, nurturing, and nourishing our hearts and bodies, and tending to our homes and the material needs that make us feel safe and secure, strengthening ourselves from the roots up.  Tonight we can re-imagine ourselves in ways that can be both emotionally fulfilling and deeply practical, and set ourselves on a path toward making that vision a lasting reality.

Astrology Update, April 25th, 2017: Bright Day, Restful Night

This morning got started in the wee hours with a challenging square from the Moon in Aries to Pluto retrograde in Capricorn, putting our emotions and instincts at odds with the hidden and transformational forces in our lives, and ratcheting up our obsessive tendencies and fears of losing control.  For those of us in the Western Hemisphere, this aspect most likely only troubled our dreams, but for those of us who were awake at that hour we may have found ourselves engaged in unexpected power struggles regarding our autonomy, particularly in relation to work or in dealing with the institutions in our lives, and those of us waking up early may have still experienced residual frustrations or impediments to our self-direction as a result of this aspect.

The rest of the morning was fairly quiet until around midday when the Moon in Aries conjuncted Uranus in Aries, increasing feelings of restlessness as it amplified our desire to be free of restrictions.  Technology and nerves may have been impacted as Uranus has an electrifying quality that can fry circuits of both the organic and inorganic kind, especially for those of us with a strong kinesthetic sense and those of us with Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or personal planets in the third decanate of cardinal signs.  We may have received unexpected news or experienced disruptions to our usual routines, but also may have experienced breakthroughs resulting from the connection of our unconscious with Uranus’ intuitive genius.

That intuitive boost could have been carried forward into the afternoon as a result of the Moon’s next interaction, a conjunction with Mercury retrograde in Aries that put our thoughts and emotions on the same motivated page, working in unison toward our goals.  That said, having our thoughts subject to our moods may have impacted our decision-making ability, and we may have found ourselves highly distracted, with our thoughts and feelings changing rapidly, especially given the Aries tendency to chase everything new and shiny.  Still, we were much more likely to be vocal about our feelings during this time, so it could have been a good opportunity to give voice to our emotions that we might be hard-pressed to express otherwise.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trined Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius, bringing a bit more seriousness and discipline to our mood, allowing us to focus on practical matters and push through adversity to get things done.  After the expressiveness of the Moon conjuncting Mercury, the trine to Saturn may have brought on an abrupt about-face in terms of our willingness to share our emotions with others, not out of a desire to hide them per se, but rather out of a heightened sense of self-sufficiency.  Whatever eccentric or experimental tendencies we experienced under the earlier Moon/Uranus conjunction, this afternoon and early evening we are more inclined to stick to methods that are tried and true, and take a more conservative approach overall.  This is especially true since this aspect starts a void-of-course period that encourages us to stick to routine for several hours, unconsciously processing the lessons of the past few days’ lunar transit through Aries, and avoiding any new enterprises as we wrap up old business and tend to things that need fixing or refining.

Tonight the Moon enters Taurus, settling down a bit from the energetic fervor of Aries and taking on a more practical and comfortable tone.  Taurus is the fixed earth sign most concerned with how things get done on the material plane, desirous of fiscal and physical security and willing to go the distance to secure home and its comforts, but also recognizing the need for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment of the good life when the day is done.  Tonight we are likely to want to enjoy our creature comforts and sensory pleasures, as Venus rules Taurus after all, and Venus is currently transiting dreamy and sensual Pisces.  Our enjoyment of the arts is increased by this transit, and chances are that we won’t adhere to our diets as strictly, nor be in much of a hurry about whatever we want to do – Taurus likes to take its time and enjoy life, even when hard at work.

Late tonight the Moon in Taurus trines the North Node in Virgo, emphasizing our path toward growth and personal achievement in a gentle and supportive way, so that we instinctually focus on our souls’ desires and what we need to do to achieve them.  There is a pleasing sense of fatedness about this aspect, a sense of all being right with the world and our slow but steady progress in it, that sets the stage for tomorrow morning’s New Moon in Taurus, and the intentions we set for ourselves with it.  Since this aspect will still be loosely in orb at the time of the New Moon, and it’s the only lunar aspect that the Moon will make for the first half of the day, it will be a quietly supportive New Moon with a focus on the Taurean virtues of steady persistence, care of the body, and rest, so tonight is a perfect night to do just that – rest and relax, dreaming kindly intentions for our bodies and our practical needs for this upcoming lunar cycle.

Astrology Update, March 27th, 2017: New Moon in Aries

This morning started off early with the Moon in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius and turning void-of-course, which can make for a dreary and frustrating way to start the day, not to mention a stereotypical Monday morning.  The Moon in hard aspect to Saturn tends to dredge up our fears and insecurities, leading to depression and even despair, or at the very least a sort of numbing sense of restriction.  Combined with the aimlessness of the void-of-course period, this made for a morning where the best course of action was sticking to our routines and not getting caught up in any bold new plans until the morning had progressed a few more hours.

Thankfully, later this morning the Moon entered Aries, giving our emotions and instincts a fresh new start, as Aries is energetic and action-oriented.  Our instincts during this lunar transit are brave and excited about life, interested in exploring new possibilities and treating life as one big adventure.  Though our tempers are a little shorter under an Aries Moon, so are our attention spans, so we aren’t likely to stay mad for long.  We’re also likely to be more straightforward during this time, more impatient and wanting to cut to the chase.  While we aren’t likely to lose all of the altruism fostered under the Pisces Moon, still we are more self-concerned and self-motivated now, seeking to make our mark on the world.  Personal ambitions are highlighted now, as is self-image.  Since Aries is ruled by Mars, physical activity is of greater interest as well – this is a good time to get out and enjoy the spring weather!

Speaking of Mars, the red planet is a player in one of the big astrological events of the day, with Mars in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces.  This puts our energy and drive that is currently operating on practical, material levels in a harmonious relationship with our hopes, dreams, ideals, and spiritual outlook.  This is a time for acting from a place of compassion without losing sight of our own self-interest, and being able to see the bigger picture even while we are engaged in very mundane and physical activities.  This is also a good time for enjoying sensory experience, and for relationships that are both sexual and spiritual, erotic and romantic.  Those of us engaged in esoteric studies are more likely to make good progress now, and those with more pragmatic outlooks may find the view improved by an unexpectedly rosy tint to the day.

To add to that rosiness, the Moon in Aries conjuncts Venus retrograde in Aries this afternoon.  Though Venus retrograde is less certain in her lust for life than when she is direct, still she is active and engaging, warm and affectionate, instinctively desiring companionship but still nobody’s pushover, and our emotions are now following her lead.  This is a time of new crushes and lively flirtation, and perhaps a bit more aggressive pursuit of who and what we desire.  If we’ve been hesitant before about such pursuit, now may be the time that we finally work up the guts to go for it, especially with the Mars/Neptune sextile adding both romantic and practical fuel to our fire.

Later this afternoon the Moon in Aries trines Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius, encouraging us to just surrender to the experiences of the day, though since this trine is in fiery signs, that surrender isn’t likely to be passive!  Rather, we may find ourselves happily swept along in a rush of fiery action, spirited and fervent and maybe a little breathless.  Black Moon Lilith and the Moon both operate on the unconscious level, so we may not even be aware of this dynamic, only later realizing that we’ve been riding a flame wave that may well have burned through more than a few inhibitions.  Black Moon Lilith is not a tame force by any stretch of the imagination, and following on the heels of the Moon/Venus conjunction and the Mars/Neptune sextile amplifies the erotic charge running through the air this afternoon and into the evening.  If indeed we did take advantage of the impetus from that Moon/Venus conjunction in pursuit of our desires, this Moon trine Black Moon Lilith may take the reins off unexpectedly.  Careful what you wish for…

Tonight’s New Moon in Aries plays out against this backdrop, along with the slowly tightening Jupiter/Pluto square that is currently under less than 1 degree of exactitude and will be exact by the end of this month.  The New Moon is a time for setting intentions to be grown through the lunar cycle, reaching fullness at the Full Moon and then being disseminated into the world as the Moon wanes.  At the New Moon the Moon conjuncts the Sun in the sky, no longer reflecting the Sun’s light but instead bringing unconsciousness and consciousness to work together, with our conscious intentions incubating in the darkness of the unconscious.  Against the backdrop noted above, the drive of both Moon and Sun in fiery Aries is great initiatory power, good for intentions regarding start-ups and bold new changes in our lives, but there is the potential for things to go a little wild in the process.  The encroaching power of the Jupiter/Pluto square reminds us that whatever we are planning is likely to have to contend with the ongoing conflict in our society between the desire for social harmony and the consolidation of power by wealthy and often hidden forces.  Faith and optimism versus greed and corruption.  Socio-political chickens coming home to roost.  No matter how personal our goals now, they are likely to become political, as the American Dream of shaping one’s own destiny is revealed to have been built on a legacy of oppression and lies, and the fable of democracy here drags down others with it abroad.

In addition, Venus retrograde’s reassessment of interpersonal interactions is happening in a sign that is impulsive and not always mindful of consequences, while the Jupiter/Pluto square is brimful with consequences, and since Venus is currently inconjunct the North Node in Virgo, there is a further disconnect between what we desire and the lessons needed by our souls.  On the plus side, Mercury in Aries is moving into a trine with Saturn in Sagittarius (exact in another couple days), so our minds are gaining the strength that comes with recognizing our limitations and the restrictions of reality, and applying Saturnine discipline to overcome obstacles.  This is a strength that we are going to need to set our intentions with this New Moon and make them stick.  This trine also resonates with a wider trine between Saturn and Uranus/Eris, so that our discipline is well aware of the Uranian rebellion and agitation that has been in and out of conflict with both Pluto and Jupiter in recent years, and we have the capacity to calmly work in alignment with the socio-political changes fomenting around us.

Since the ruler of this New Moon is Mars, currently in Taurus in a harmonious sextile with Neptune in Pisces, there is also some chance for our ideals to positively influence our practical efforts in connection with our New Moon intentions.  With Ceres in Taurus as well in a loose trine with Pluto in Capricorn, we should be mindful of how our intentions may nurture and nourish us, quite possibly on a very practical level.  Though the alignments of this New Moon do not create any notable configurations, nonetheless there is an interesting overall dynamic at work here, of balancing what we want versus what the surrounding reality is shaping, and keeping some measure of hope and idealism and even romanticism alive even as reality seems more and more grim.  Aries is a sign whose efforts can seem like a flash in the pan with its eagerness and impulsiveness, but against the backdrop of ongoing transcendental and generational drama and with Aries’ ruler Mars active in fixed Taurus via the Mars/Neptune sextile, there is the potential for a lot more staying power to the intentions we set now than is apparent at first blush.

Astrology Update, February 26th, 2017: New Moon and Eclipse in Pisces

This morning starts with the New Moon in Pisces and an annular Solar Eclipse, the “ring of fire” in which the moon blocks much but not all of the Sun, due to being further away from the Earth and therefore appearing smaller in relation to the Sun.  This will not be visible in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is potent nonetheless.  The New Moon is a time for intention setting, preparing the energy that will grow between now and the Full Moon, at which time we release that intention out into the world.  Eclipses, on the other hand, set something new into motion over a six month stretch, with the effects from this one stretching forward until the next Solar Eclipse in August.

The Moon and the Sun are conjunct in Pisces, which also contains Mercury, Neptune, Chiron, and the South Node, putting a heavy emphasis on Piscean themes of emotional sensitivity, spirituality, fantasy, and karma.  Pisces is the oldest sign of the zodiac, so endings are emphasized here and new beginnings as well, thanks to three planets and a dwarf planet in Aries (Venus, Mars, Uranus, and Eris).  Now is the time for us to muster both faith and courage to let go of the past in order to leap forward into the new, which may not be what we were expecting.  Since the Moon and Sun are conjunct between the North Node and Neptune, coming to terms with the past is especially emphasized, but the Moon and Sun are closer to Neptune, so there is a strong potential for confusion here.  Neptune is the transcendental ruler of Pisces and emphasizes dissolving boundaries and merging with the Universal, so the process of dissolution is stronger than the grip of the past, but if we fear letting go then that process will be more difficult.  We may find ourselves caught in the grip of nostalgia, even if that vision of the past is seen through overly rosy glasses.  One way to help ourselves move forward is actually to learn more about the past, the real past, not the idealized one nor the one hidden by those for whom the truth would be inconvenient.  Now is a time for dreaming as well, and meditation on the patterns in our lives, especially those pertaining to trauma, whether personal, familial, or generational (or all of the above).

As if to emphasize the need to dissolve old ties and let go, later this morning Mercury squares Black Moon Lilith, challenging our already fuzzy mental capacities with full immersion into our most difficult and destructive belief patterns, adding further fuel to the Eclipse-born impetus to discover the truth about our karmic patterns.  Black Moon Lilith here may add to our unconscious fears, but also gives us a push to break through them in order to gain a fuller understanding of ourselves and how we have been shaped by larger patterns and attitudes that may not even be truly our own, imparted to us by family and society.

This afternoon, we have still further opportunity to transcend our old patterns and float in the sea of intuitive knowing as the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces.  We are likely to have a powerful instinctual need to escape reality at this time, and may find ourselves bewildered by what we are feeling now.  Those of us who are spiritually inclined may feel like we have been touched by the Divine, or fate, but some of us may also find our addictions or chronic illnesses hitting hard now.  Our moods may tend toward the romantic, or the introspective, or the nostalgic, or some combination thereof, and while this can amplify confusion and escapism, it can also aid in the process of dissolving old ties and making our peace with the past.  This is a good time to work through these feelings creatively with art or music, or any other activities that thrive when fed by an active imagination.

Early this evening Mars in Aries conjuncts Uranus in Aries, activating the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition as well as a loose cardinal T-square with Pluto.  That Mars/Uranus conjunction is going to emphasize a drive toward the future and new beginnings that may be of the hang-onto-your-hat variety, as Uranus is impatient even when not in impulsive Aries and is also still conjunct Eris, goddess of chaos and discord.  And with Jupiter blowing air into the coals, his emphasis on relationships and social harmony just fuels the Uranian fire that demands freedom, self-fulfillment, and revolutionary change that Mars provides the drive to achieve.  All of the watery emphasis on the past that we experienced with the Eclipse and the Moon/Neptune conjunction now gives way to four-alarm fire steering us in a wholly new direction that we may well feel we have absolutely no control over.  But for many of us, no matter how disconcerting that push from forces larger than ourselves may feel, on some level it is likely to be a relief, a natural progression, a vital shift in consciousness that needs to happen.  Scary, yes.  But oh-so-necessary.

Tarot for the New Moon in Capricorn, December 28th/29th, 2016: Wealth, reversed

december-28th-2016-wealth

Tonight’s Tarot card is the 10 of Disks (Wealth), reversed.  Since the New Moon appears near the witching hour tonight (before midnight on the West Coast and after midnight on the East Coast), and I have been emphasizing use of the New Moon for getting a jump-start on setting New Year’s resolutions as well as using the current Mercury retrograde in Capricorn to review and think deeply on our goals in preparation for making great changes in our lives during 2017, it seems appropriate to post a Tarot card now to consider as we move forward in setting our intentions for this lunar cycle and the year beyond.  Since lunar cycles visually embody a process of growing into fullness and then diminishing again, each New Moon represents an opportunity to set an intention which will grow with the waxing of the Moon until it is full, at which point the energy of that intention is ready to be disseminated into the world with Moon’s waning, until the Moon is dark again and a new intention is ready to be brought forth from the darkness.

The 10 of Disks falls within the realm of Mercury in Virgo, one of the two signs that it rules.  Since Mercury was already emphasized heavily in the past 24 hours, it might seem odd to see this card reversed, the energies of Mercury limited or blocked in some way, or at the very least expressed in an unusual manner.  But since we are right in the middle of Mercury retrograde, our activities in Mercury-related realms of thought and communication are being expressed differently at this time.  What’s more, because Mercury in Capricorn is given to slow, deep thought, the usual adaptable expression of Mercury in Virgo that addresses many details in quick succession might not be the best solution for us at this time.

The Thoth deck’s version of this card shows ten coins arranged in the form of the Tree of Life, a diagram of the process of the Universe coming into being and the central symbol of the Kabbalah system of esoteric Judaism that has informed much of Western occult thought.  The coins in the card are seen in the positions of the Ten Sephiroth, representations of different stages of energy in the process of manifestation, and with representations of the symbol of Mercury on the three highest of these the image emphasizes the need for thought and communication to guide the process of manifestation from the moment that its possibility is apparent.  The presence of the Tree of Life on this card indicates that material success is dependent on thought that starts first in the spiritual realms, and because the coins are shown representing each of the Sephiroth, it is evident that the card’s normal injunction is to attend to details in all areas of the process of manifestation in order to have complete success and wealth on all levels of material existence.

Tonight, however, perhaps we need to be less concerned with being quick-witted in multiple realms and instead put all of our eggs into one basket and watch that basket, as the saying goes, focusing on one crucial goal on which all others depend. We also need to be prepared for our material circumstances to be limited or take a turn for the worse before they take a turn for the better. And in thinking about our life path and expressing our goals, we need to be less concerned with obvious material matters and more concerned with the long-term hidden patterns that affect our world on the material plane.

Keep in mind that Virgo rules the 6th house of work, service, daily habits, and health. We may need to turn our usual routine upside down in order to see the results we desire. Given that “wealth” does not pertain solely to monetary matters or material possessions but also includes our physical well-being, our health may be compromised and needing to be tended to now before it gets any worse. Certainly the health of our planet is compromised and in dire need of attention, and just as the earth is plagued by a constant bombardment of toxins, so too are we, in our food, air, water, and the objects we create and use and keep close to us. And so long as we continue to avoid looking at and communicating about the problem, it will continue to grow until it consumes us all.

This Mercury-ruled card standing on its head isn’t just a warning though – it’s an opportunity. The same thinking that has gotten us here is not the kind of thinking we need to solve our problems. The 10 of Disks reversed is an invitation to think about our situations in different ways, seeing and being willing to consider and communicate about new possibilities for solving the problems confronting us.

The wealth of the 10 of Disks in its upright stage has reached a point of solidity that stagnates aunless change is induced under the auspices of Mercury, and the resources used so that their energy can move and be abundant rather than hoarded uselessly.  The 10 of Disks reversed demands a more fluid approach, an understanding of the malleability of real wealth, and a willingness to use our resources in service to a greater vision of wealth than the one which has poisoned our world so far.

Mercury is a trickster god, and in pursuit of wealth humanity has for a long time tricked itself into thinking that what we have been doing to our environment and our own bodies doesn’t matter. And while Mercury standing on his head may look like a clown, he is still the same powerful Magician capable of bringing anything into being through the use of thought and communication, and all of the resources connected by the two. Now is the time for us to similarly transform our own perspectives and see the abundance of possibilities that we had never previously considered. The New Year calls for a new path to wealth. Which direction will we choose?
