Astrology Update, Solar Eclipse, February 15th, 2018: Creating New Stories

Today has offered us a New Moon with a Solar Eclipse in Aquarius.  Though visible only to parts of South America and Antarctica, this eclipse has already been felt for a few days now by those of us with luminaries, personal planets, or personal points in the 3rd decanate of Aquarius, and will continue to be felt for a while to come.  That’s the thing about eclipses – the big results in our lives tend not to show up on the day of the eclipse, but instead unfold over the next six months, until the time of the next eclipse.

The last Solar Eclipse was in Leo on August 21st of 2017, indicating changes in core identity and self-expression – that eclipse was personal and creative, and that creativity is mirrored and progressed as we move forward into this new eclipse season.  This eclipse in Aquarius indicates changes in group relations and the causes that capture our imaginations and our dedication, with strong idealist and populist overtones.  The personal changes effected as a result of the Leo Solar Eclipse have consequences that are being carried forward to effect changes on a larger social scale during the six months following this Aquarian Solar Eclipse.

Solar eclipses underscore the extent to which the hidden forces of our instincts can impel deep personal change by casting their shadow on the light of consciousness.  The Sun//Moon conjunction of the New Moon is astrology’s most powerful aspect, a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are aligned.  Thus, new seeds of intention are best planted at the New Moon, when these forces within us are in sync.  The Solar Eclipse gives our intuitive side an edge over our more logical side, triggering situations that can offer us a fresh start in whatever area of our lives the eclipse touches through its contact with our natal charts.

This eclipse is conjoined with Mercury and Juno in Aquarius, emphasizing communication and mature partnerships.  Mercury in combination with the Sun and Moon combines intelligence with will and instinct, so there is a good potential for thoughtful and creative planning to guide us forward during this eclipse season, and Juno’s presence makes it likely that our plans require mutually beneficial relationships and shared emotional intelligence to thrive.  That said, it pays to remember that Mercury is a trickster god, playful but also amoral.  This is the Magician archetype in the Tarot, willing to experiment with whatever is at hand regardless of consequence if it furthers his aims.  This is also a storyteller aspect, and with the Sun and Moon sextiling Uranus in Aries that story is likely to have a few unexpected twists and turns, but with Jupiter in Scorpio squaring Mercury, we can expect more than a bit of pulp sensationalism in this narrative, and should take care not to leave the proverbial Caps Lock on lest we turn our creative dialogs into unintentional shouting matches.  With Jupiter sextiling Pluto, there is power behind the bombast, and we may find our Magician storyteller called to stand up to authority.  These next six months are a good time to craft new narratives, a time favoring writers and content creators ready to take bold new steps, create new stories, and build the alliances needed to get those stories seen and heard by those most in need of them.

Venus in Pisces sextiles Saturn in Capricorn today, underscoring the need to create and maintain stable relationships, with both planets inconjunct to Ceres in Leo, creating a Yod formation (“the finger of God”) that points to how we nurture and express our core selves within those relationships.  Venus in Pisces is sympathetic and adaptable, and harmonizes well with Saturn in Capricorn’s sober pragmatism, both putting pressure on Ceres in Leo’s hunger for a solo spotlight.  We are not being asked to dissolve our egos in relationship, however, for the mature and socially conscious partnerships called for by Juno in Aquarius not only allow for individuality and eccentricity, they encourage these qualities.  The Yod to Ceres does not negate the spotlight; it enhances it, and asks us to create relationships that feed our needs as individuals as a means to a better collective, a greater social vision that recognizes and upholds the rights of all, and gives us all a place to shine.

Mars in idealistic and social Sagittarius trines the North Node in Leo, giving further impetus to this alliance of our core creative and karmic needs with our social consciousness, but Mars also squares Neptune in Pisces today, increasing the potential for deceptive action, seduction, and subterfuge, as well as accidents or harmful actions involving water.  Mars conjunct Vesta increases our idealistic focus, and we may find ourselves engaged in such aggressive pursuit of our goals that we forget to look before we leap, or run afoul of those wishing to take advantage of our idealism for their own nefarious purposes.  Thankfully, Pallas in Taurus trine Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn enhances our cool-headed planning capacity, giving us the ability to step back and assess our circumstances dispassionately, should we choose to make use of it.  The airy detachment that the Aquarian Sun, Moon, and Mercury are famous for is being bolstered by earthy practicality wielded in alignment with divine vision, giving us the capacity to seize our fate with both hands and use our united minds and hearts to create it anew.

Astrology Update, Lunar Eclipse, January 31st, 2018: Lordly Due

Full Moons are normally a time when the intentions we set two weeks earlier at the New Moon are coming into fruition.  This Full Moon just happens to feature a Lunar Eclipse in Leo, so rather than simply casting the light of the Sun’s consciousness upon our usual emotions, instincts, and cycles, we now find that our most hidden feelings are coming to the surface, revealing our suppressed emotions and reactions and past situations that have planted the seeds for what we feel now.

As eclipses operate on a six month axis, now is a time to wipe our emotional slates clean, freeing ourselves of whatever emotional baggage we have accumulated in the past six months, especially when it comes to how we express our emotions and how our emotions reveal our innermost truths and make them ripe for the sharing. This Moon very closely conjuncts the asteroid Ceres retrograde, placing emphasis on how we nurture ourselves and others with our feelings and instinctual reactions.  We may find this to be an exceptionally “hungry” Moon, demanding, consuming, unwilling to take “no” for an answer.  The Moon conjunct a retrograde Ceres also brings issues of motherhood to the forefront, particularly those in which nurturance becomes dominating or smothering.  Old wounds from our families of origin may bubble to the surface now.

Black Moon Lilith still loosely conjunct Pluto in Capricorn gives further fuel to the Dark Mother archetype, and with Black Moon Lilith squaring the conjunction of Eris with Uranus in Aries, we may find our mother issues generating sudden disruptions to our lives that feel like they’ve been set in motion by the hands of fate.  With both Black Moon Lilith and Pluto still sextile Jupiter in Scorpio, we may yet be able to summon a practical capacity for objectively and even optimistically assessing the transformations we are experiencing at this time, but Jupiter’s touch continues to magnify their power and their depth, no matter what equanimity we are able to muster on the surface.

This Moon also loosely conjuncts the North Node, increasing the long-term importance of what we learn from these emotional revelations, and warning us against intemperate action based on eclipse-driven impulses.  The Sun loosely conjuncting Venus and the South Node in Aquarius at this time amplifies our capacity for openness, friendliness, and insights regarding social connections yet also increases the likelihood of run-ins with old loves or social circles that we have drifted away from, but with the Moon also inconjunct Neptune at this time it is likely that such encounters will only increase confusion and disenchantment, as Neptune in Pisces encourages the dissolution of boundaries that our hearts need for security as we carve out our emotional realm, and Neptune’s slippery, illusory glimmer is likely to create some bewildering territory to trip up our bold leonine instincts.

This is not a Full Moon that it is easy to find the benefits of, with the intensity and capacity for unforeseen disruptions that tend to accompany eclipses combined with the ferocity and resistance to change of our surfacing emotions.  In particular we may find ourselves confronting our innermost feelings regarding the attention that we do or do not receive from others, wondering “when will my time in the spotlight come?” or, just as easily feeling deeply uncomfortable from an excess of attention in a time or place where we would rather fade into the woodwork.  I always say that the best way to wrangle Leos is to give them whatever they consider to be their “lordly due,” whatever they need to feel most recognized and able to shine as their truest selves, and this eclipsed Leo Moon is demanding its emotional “lordly due” – recognition of the full truth of what we feel, no matter how difficult those feelings might be.

Astrology Update, January 24th-25th, 2018, In the Wake of the 1st Quarter Moon

“Today’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus sees the first challenge in this lunar cycle to the intentions we set at last week’s New Moon in Capricorn and have been building on since….”

I started to write about last night’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus and stopped. I’d been struggling with writer’s block all day and into the night, not simply at a loss for words, but rather feeling the need to work with the energies of this moon phase through visual art instead of writing. Or at least find some balance between the two, to find the path of least resistance in working with the inherent challenge of the First Quarter Moon’s square between the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Taurus, two fixed signs who each have no interest in moving to accommodate the other.

To successfully navigate this kind of challenge we need to really feel it, not just emotionally, but kinaesthetically, as a voraciously thinking and socially attuned Solar Consciousness just bumped up against our instinctive desire to take pleasure in the physical world. In a society which has long valued mind over matter and upheld the supremacy of the soul over the body, the visual over the tactile, coming to a real place of understanding between the two is no small feat.

Why does it say “avowed hedonist” toward the end of the self-description in my header on Twitter? Because I believe that we should enjoy our lives enthusiastically and unashamedly or not at all. Ourselves, just as we are. We all have our little indulgences, material or otherwise. And the “otherwise” is heightened now with Mercury conjuncting Pluto reviving the last reverberations of Pluto’s waxing square to Uranus that has caused so much societal and personal disruption in recent years.  Mercury’s conjunction to Pluto eeking out the last bit of growth potential from that Pluto/Uranus square has heightened the potential for challenging sudden changes in thought or speech at a time when our obsessions and compulsions are exerting a powerful influence on our minds.  As Mercury sextiles Jupiter today and moves forward toward the exact square to Uranus this upcoming Sunday, plus with Jupiter’s recent sextile to Pluto still in effect, we are likely to find these mental changes and unusual conversations more and more challenging, confronted with ideas that may seem too radical in the context of the status quo, yet we also have an increased capacity to make use of the transformative power of Pluto’s influence, to gain greater awareness of our own subconscious motivations and come to a greater sense of wholeness in the process, if we are willing to face the parts of ourselves we have not previously recognized.

Both the classical and modern rulers of Aquarius have coloured our thoughts and feelings over the past 24 hours, with Saturn in Capricorn trine the Moon in Taurus at the time of the First Quarter Moon, increasing the strength of our emotions yesterday, and we have felt these over the course of the night in our bones, slowly, steadily, the daily processes of our experiences informing our psyches, rippling both outward and inward. Saturn is all about process, all about slow and steady progress over time, and very much about the body – working within the limitations of the physical form, but also grounding ourselves and our feelings at a time when the forward-thinking consciousness of the Sun in Aquarius might easily send us too far out into space, too far into our future and not mindful enough of the present.

Drawing for me is a very embodied process – more than one person who knows me and my artwork has commented on the clear connection between my drawings and my dancing, as there is always a sense of movement within my best work. The drawing that is a part of this post is by no means a completed drawing, but rather a continuation of a glorified doodle that I started a while back and hadn’t initially intended to do much else with. And I will probably end up painting over it at some later date. But for the moment, it is a good reminder of the need to be patient with the process in this lunar cycle and in this coming year, to be mindful of our bodies as we pursue our minds’ goals and our social causes, and to give ourselves recognition for the progress we are making while recognizing that we still have a long way to go. The journey may be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be painful.

Astrology of February 15th, 2017: Shared Potential

Today has seen the Moon moving through a series of aspects with Uranus, Jupiter, and Saturn, reinforcing the Triangle of Potential that we’ve seen since the holiday season (which is Saturn is now moving out of orb from).  I’ve talked a lot about this Triangle of Potential over the past couple of months, so if you’ve been reading along during that time you’re already quite familiar with it, but for those who are just getting caught up, it essentially involves a balancing process between our individual desires for freedom that are manifesting in sudden acts of rebellion versus our faith and good fortune in partnership and expanded desire for social harmony, as represented by the ongoing opposition between Jupiter and Uranus, with Saturn acting as the mediator between the two, applying discipline and understanding of process and boundaries in relation to our sense of ideals and desire for the truth.

This morning, the Moon in Libra opposed Uranus in Aries, creating a strong potential for sudden disruptions in both our emotional reactions and our normal routines (a huge part of why I’m writing this post so late in the day!).  The Moon conjuncting Jupiter a few hours later reinforced our instinctive desire for peace and harmony to balance out any residual effects from Uranus’ jarring influence earlier, but it may also have made whatever we feel seem larger than life, including feeling unsettled or even out of control in relation to this morning’s events.

Thankfully, this afternoon’s sextile from the Moon in Libra to Saturn in Sagittarius has provided some stability and balance to the equation, helping us to slow the frenetic pace that a Moon/Uranus opposition can set, and ease down on the massive surge of emotion that the Moon/Jupiter conjunction may have encouraged.  Saturn is not often thought of as a kindly influence in astrology, but today’s Moon/Saturn sextile is a lovely example of where the stern Lord of Karma can actually help us to navigate some of the more crazy-making side-effects from the actions of other planets, using patience and discipline to help us make sense of it all.

This evening the Moon in Libra trines the Sun in Aquarius, bringing our unconscious desire for social harmony into a supportive flow state with our conscious desire to improve ourselves and our society, aligning our instinctive reactions with our core identity.  At the same time, this starts a lunar void-of-course period, so this is not a night for starting any bold new initiatives, but instead it’s a good time for falling back on the routines that may have been disrupted by this morning’s tug-of-war between Uranus and Jupiter, observing what may need fine-tuning in our social environments and determining where changes need to be made to achieve the best results for everyone involved.

Late tonight sees the Moon’s entry into Scorpio, increasing our emotional depth and sensitivity, but also making us less likely to communicate our feelings and experiences as we plunge into the more mysterious workings of our lives.  Scorpio is the fixed water sign, the deepest part of the unconscious, the intuitive ocean.  Its classical ruler is Mars, giving it strength of focus, and its transcendental ruler is Pluto, giving it intense willpower and a transformative urge.  Whatever Scorpio touches is not going to be interested in surfaces nor likely to act without impact.  Our instincts are now turning to all of the deep, dark, intense stuff of humanity:  psychology, money, politics, sex, religion, and power.  Especially power.  Now is a time when we are likely to see an increase in attempted one-upmanship and jockeying for position in our social circles and relationships.  The closer the emotional attachment the more likely that issues of power will raise their heads now.  We need to be conscious of our own control issues now, and understand that acknowledging others’ power does not deny us our own.  Indeed, tonight our power is likely to make itself felt, both waking and sleeping.  We dream deep tonight.

Astrology of February 13th, 2017: Process and Partnership

Today is bookended by Saturn aspects, lending an overall feeling of seriousness to the day.

The day starts out with the Moon in Virgo squaring Saturn in Sagittarius in the early morning hours, putting our emotions and instincts into conflict with our fears, insecurities, inhibitions, and limitations, and all of that within the lingering residue of last night’s Moon/Chiron opposition.  Saturn deals with time and process, process being the one area of common ground he holds with the Moon at this time, so being mindful of process may be a good way to deal with the negative emotions that may be raised by this aspect, including a tendency toward depression.  Saturn also governs discipline, so some of us may instinctively throw ourselves into the day’s work as a means of combatting what we feel – drowning one’s sorrows in work is a very Saturnine modus operandi.  If we choose to go this route, we need to have a care not to martyr ourselves in the process, as the Moon in Virgo’s perfectionist tendencies can exacerbate Saturn’s gloomy outlook on ourselves and our situations.

The Moon turns void-of-course with this aspect, so we are likely to experience that gloominess through something of a fog, making it even more important that we utilize Saturn’s discipline to fall back on routine, tend to correcting any out-of-place details in our lives, and not try to make any drastic changes or great leaps forward until the Moon enters Libra this afternoon, two minutes after sextiling Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio.  Thankfully, the sextile is a gently harmonious aspect, in this case supporting our emotions with Lilith’s focus and understanding of our frustrations.

The Moon entering Libra puts our instincts and feelings in the realm of partnership and social harmony.  Both romantic relationships and business relationships are emphasized, as well as open enemies.  We are likely to want more than anything for peace to prevail in our interactions with others, and need to be careful that we don’t succumb to the temptation to make doormats out of ourselves in pursuit of peace at any price.  The Moon in Libra is easily thrown out of equilibrium by disharmony, so noise, dissonance, and disruptive people and situations are likely to cause greater stress than usual, triggering the intense need to smooth things over.  Of course, we are more likely to favor diplomatic means of problem-solving at this time as well, so this is a good time to endeavor to work out previously unresolvable interpersonal conflicts.  Chances are that we will also take a greater interest in the arts and beauty, and will want our company and surroundings to reflect a more refined aesthetic during this time.  We are more inclined toward romance now, whether in a relationship or single, and will be instinctively driven toward people and circumstances that reinforce our romantic ideals.  Libra is the sign most likely to get married, after all, but it is also the sign most likely to get divorced, so now is not the time to go off the deep end over someone we’ve just met, tempting though that may be.

Luckily, the big aspect of tonight is the Sun in Aquarius sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius, giving a sense of steadiness and discipline to our consciousness, a supportive understanding of our flaws and foibles that will grow throughout the day and last into tomorrow.  And since Saturn governs longevity, what we give our consciousness to tonight is likely to have lasting consequences in our social circles, especially in relation to our beliefs and ideals.  This is a time to focus our attention on whatever in our lives could benefit from discipline and dedication, especially tasks that are part of a larger process.  We are likely to have more patience now with both ourselves and others, and if we combine the Moon’s instinct toward partnership with our larger social consciousness tonight, we have the ability to create something that will not quickly fade.
