Astrology Update, New Moon in Pisces, March 17th, 2018: Cultivating Compassion

The New Moon is a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are in alignment, our emotions and our core needs able to work together in service to a larger vision.  This makes the New Moon a perfect time to consider our goals and set our intentions for this lunar cycle, with the seeds we plant growing into fullness during the next two weeks between now and the Full Moon.

Conjunct to Chiron in Pisces, this New Moon sits closely with our oldest and deepest wounds, asking us to allow ourselves to feel where we hurt, and give ourselves the space and time to understand how and why we came by that injury.  With all three still loosely trined to Jupiter, we may find the floodgates open when it comes to what we are feeling, and secrets spilling forth that we never thought we’d admit to anyone. Yet somehow this is all okay. If we are willing to be compassionate with ourselves and others now (and this trio in Pisces makes it far more likely that we can be), then we may find ourselves relieved to be unburdened of that emotional weight we’ve been carrying around for so long.

With Venus and Mercury both in Aries, our thoughts and desires are oriented toward action, stirring the watery softness of the Pisces Sun/Moon/Chiron with direct and fiery expression.  Venus and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo now, keeping their potential for self-absorption in alignment with our karmic paths – though we may be focused on our personal thoughts and pleasures now, that focus is necessary to help us through the pain coming to the surface during this lunar season and to keep us from wallowing in it or becoming overwhelmed and drowning in feelings of self-pity and martyrdom.

Venus and Mercury are also squaring Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn now, forcing us to come to grips with our most self-defeating obsessions, and bringing an element of tough love into the mix.  Black Moon Lilith calls upon us to apply some objectivity to what we think and how we relate, and now we are likely to be confronted with the need to let some of our desires fall by the wayside in order to accomplish what is most important and necessary for our own growth.

At the time of the New Moon this morning, Mars was in Sagittarius still loosely trining Uranus in Aries, amplifying the fiery need for action and quickness, with the potential to yield sudden insight in connection with pursuit of our goals.  But that also placed Mars square to the Sun, Moon, and Chiron in Pisces, and then a few hours later, Mars entered Capricorn, squaring the Moon again after its entry into Aries near mid-day. This doubles the likelihood of our actions being at odds with our emotions and instincts both today and as we move forward into this lunar cycle.  We may find a degree of frustration with our emotions, impatience to get on with our goals in the real world without our fluctuating moods and injured feelings hindering our ability to get things done on a practical level. This frustration is a foreshadowing of more to come, as Mars moves into a conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn that will be exact on April 2nd but is colouring our actions for a week or so on either side.  Saturn being the cosmic taskmaster presenting obstacles and fears to grind action down to agonizing slowness or even a halt and Mars being our drive and active principle, we need to prepare now for the obstacles likely to hit us around the time of the April Fool’s Full Moon in Libra, lest we find ourselves the butt of a cosmic joke, an emotional Poisson d’Avril.

This is even more crucial given Mercury’s impending retrograde, which will be in full swing by the time of the Mars/Saturn conjunction.  In order to get through the immobilizing effect of that conjunction, we need the lessons of this Pisces New Moon to keep us flexible and forgiving, able to instinctively adapt to what faces us because we are willing to allow and accept our deepest sorrows and sensitivities now.  The time we take this lunar cycle to work through the hurts that we feel holding us back and the compassion that we exercise in doing so are necessary to help us get through more trying times to come. With that compassion bolstering our resolve, we can recognize the possibility for success no matter how insurmountable the obstacles before us may seem, and forgive ourselves for the mistakes and sacrifices that we must make along the way.

Astrology Update, Full Worm Moon in Virgo, March 1st, 2018: Turning the Soil

What intentions we have sown in the darkness of the New Moon now are fully revealed as the Sun’s light reveals the face of the Full Moon.  With the Sun in Pisces conjunct that sign’s transcendental ruler Neptune, and part of a stellium with Mercury, Venus, and Chiron in Pisces as well, our consciousness is fully steeped in intuition and empathy, unusually sympathetic to those less fortunate than ourselves but also more inclined to see with rose-coloured glasses, and thus more easily deceived by our own romanticized vision and the unscrupulous.  With the Moon opposite Neptune, glamor is in high-gear tonight but so is escapism, and with the Moon in communicative Virgo, theatre and movies are especially favored.

With Venus conjunct Mercury in Pisces and both of them trining Jupiter in Scorpio, the glamor and sociability are heightened even more, but with Mars in Sagittarius squaring Mercury and Venus, what we say and what we do may well not match up – we are likely to find ourselves challenged to walk our talk, especially where our ideals are concerned.  Since the Moon in Virgo brings out our most practical instincts and our perfectionism, we may struggle now with the dichotomy between our more selfless leanings and the realities that we bump up against in our desire to connect with and give to others.  Unfortunately, both Virgo and Pisces can have a tendency to play the victim, so we may find ourselves feeling taken advantage of now, whether or not this is actually the case, and may wind up bemoaning our fate more than usual now (or have to listen to others doing so!).  This Virgo Moon is ruled by Mercury, and both emboldened by the trine to Jupiter and embattled by the square to Mars, our minds and mouths may well find themselves biting off more than we can chew, especially if we let our imaginations run away with us, as that pile-up of planets and the Sun conjunct Neptune are wont to do.  It is especially important now to listen well and think before we speak, lest words that we intended to unite wind up dividing instead.

Pluto in Capricorn sextile Mercury can help to steady that imagination now, keeping our thoughts connected to our more practical goals and the structure they can provide, an anchor of determination in a sea of Piscean dreams.  Since the Virgo Moon is an earthy Moon, we are not rudderless in all of that water either.  Virgo is known for its attention to detail in pursuit of perfection, and its dedication to process and growth.  This Moon is known as the “Worm Moon” for its connection to the early spring return of earthworms to turn and renew the soil and feed the birds, and so now is a good time to pay close attention to what our bodies tell us, and tend to our health and nutrition.  Having Neptune conjunct the Sun and opposing the Moon can make it harder for us to clearly see the details that a Virgo Moon normally calls attention to, so it can be helpful now to use Virgoan habits like cleaning, cooking, and gardening as meditative aids, using their structure as a container for all of that Piscean overflow.  Spring cleaning and letting go of things that we no longer need is especially favored now, decluttering our lives in order to have room for our goals to flourish.

There is a monastic quality to the Virgo/Pisces axis that encourages simplifying the mundane life in order to strengthen the spiritual life, tending to the body in order to aid the soul – the original purpose of yoga.  While the Mercury/Venus trine to Jupiter can increase our self-indulgent qualities now, perhaps we would do well to luxuriate in simple things during this Full Moon.  That Jupiter trine in combination with Neptune in hard aspect to both Sun and Moon amplifies our spiritual yearnings now, as well as our faith and trust, despite the challenges of the Mars square, and literally walking the path may be the best way to see it more clearly.  This is a good time to recognize that both forest and trees are worth experiencing, both soil and sea, both in perfect detail and impressionistic blur.  What we choose to communicate about that experience and how we connect in the process may require extra care now, but for the sake of both temporary enjoyment and the longer course of our souls’ journey that care is well worth the time.

Astrology Update, March 17th, 2017: Bruising Compassion

Today has few astrological aspects, but what aspects there are pack a wallop.

The day starts out kindly enough with a late-morning trine from the Moon in Scorpio to Chiron in Pisces, a supportive connection between our deepest emotions and the wisdom gained through our painful experiences and old wounds.  Matters of health are likely to come into focus this morning, and we may find ourselves intuiting exactly how to remedy the problems that afflict others around us.  This is a good time to get to the heart of such matters with those closest to us, bringing old secrets to light that may prove to be the catalyst for healing past trauma, particularly in relation to power structures and patterns within families.  Our compassion is likely to have been amplified by this aspect, and we may find ourselves continuing to feel deeply for others as the day progresses.

Which would be all well and good, but today that compassionate feeling is confronted by the limitations and restrictions that result from entrenched beliefs, whether our own or those of others, as the Sun in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius, and the most sensitive parts of our core being are bruised by fear and insecurity stirred up by cold, hard reality.  Saturn in hard aspect to the Sun can make us feel as though we are personally under attack by fate and misfortune.  Since both Sagittarius and Pisces are social signs that deal with larger patterns and expanded views, that sense of attack can come from societal forces around us, including organizations that we are a part of.  On a personal level, we are likely to want to escape whatever is confronting us, yet we are likely to feel a sense of social responsibility that will not allow us to hide from whatever unkindness is rearing its ugly head today.  Frustrations are likely to be abundant today, but may be mitigated if we avoid making assumptions and try to get to the bottom of what is really happening.  Are the things we feel confined or attacked by really necessary parts of our lives?  It is important to recognize where expectations held by both ourselves and others are indeed legitimate, and where we are allowing them to cloud our vision and restrict us unnecessarily.  Saturnine aspects can increase a sense of doom and gloom, heightening depression and even despair, especially when lashing out with the righteously indignant fervor of Sagittarius against sensitive, self-sacrificing Pisces who is all too prone to being a doormat even under the best of circumstances.  But this is an opportunity to see the areas of weakness in our views of ourselves, and learn how to stand up for ourselves, as well as how to seek help from others in dealing with the larger and more difficult forces in our lives.  For better or for worse, we are not alone.

Shortly after the Sun/Saturn square becomes exact this afternoon, the Moon in Scorpio trines the Sun in Pisces, giving us an instinctive and emotional boost in fortitude that may help us through this time.  This is an aspect that increases our internal equilibrium, strengthening our sense of self and giving us the emotional resources to face the trials that our egos are undergoing now.  This is a time when the goals that we set at the New Moon and brought into fullness at the Full Moon are now being released into the world, so that we can start seeing results in the weeks and months to come, and may find a greater sense of security in those areas of our lives as a result.  Since these are both water signs, our intuition is likely to be heightened now, especially in relation to perceiving previously hidden parts of ourselves and our power relations in the world, so this particularly helpful now in dealing with any sense of imbalance resulting from the Sun/Saturn square.  We are in a better position to communicate what we feel about our situations, and our feelings and our core sense of self are united – we are not likely to be uncertain about what we want now, even though that Sun/Saturn square may try to batter us down in favor of what others around us desire.  This is a prime opportunity to stand tall on our own behalf without abandoning our responsibilities toward others, for the Scorpio Moon is self-protective but the Pisces Sun values service toward others, and the two go hand-in-hand for us this afternoon.

The Sun/Moon trine starts a void-of-course period lasting for several hours, so this is a time to allow ourselves to float within our routines as much as possible, as our combined conscious and unconscious energies work through the issues confronting us.  This is not a time for bold, new moves, but rather a time to see what is out of place, what needs to be adjusted, and how we can best get back on track.  This evening is a good time for casual gatherings in familiar places, with familiar people.  It is not a good time to meet new people or make important plans, as such arrangements made during a void-of-course Moon tend to come to naught in the end.

Later tonight the Moon enters Sagittarius, encouraging our emotions and instincts to ease up a bit from the intensity of Scorpio, back off from our focus and see the bigger picture.  We become less insular now, more social and more interested in new experiences.  Our ideals are ignited under this Moon, and we may find ourselves more passionate in expressing our interests and our beliefs, and certainly more forthright – Sagittarius has a well-deserved reputation as a straight shooter.  Religious and philosophical feelings are stirred by this lunar transit, and our knee-jerk reactions are likely to be louder, more fervent, and less willing to take no for an answer.  That said, our staying power is decreased by this transit, and we are more likely to move quickly from one interest to another, taking in as many new experiences as possible.  We are more flexible now, and more optimistic as well, and want to expand our horizons as far as we can.  Since the effects of the Sun/Saturn square will continue to linger into tomorrow, that expansiveness and optimism may take a little more time to get off the ground than is usual with this lunar placement, but chances are that at this point, we’ll take what help we can get.

Astrology Update, March 14th, 2017: Healing Crisis

We are still experiencing the effects of the Mars/North Node trine giving impetus to our growth on our karmic paths today, and the ongoing theme of letting go of old, painful patterns is revisited with the Sun conjuncting Chiron in Pisces this morning, with the effects of this conjunction lasting throughout the day.  Since Pisces governs the 12th house with it’s attendant themes of death, sorrow, self-defeat, and confinement, these are the themes we may find ourselves confronting today, along with illness and trauma, both personal and intergenerational.  Navigating this transit takes extra doses of kindness and compassion, as well as intuition – our consciousness today is less a thinking consciousness and more of a feeling consciousness, and seeing the patterns that have led us to this point and what we need to do to change them is likely to require that we surrender ourselves to the experience rather than fighting our way through it.  Today especially we may find things getting worse before they get better, experiencing what is known in holistic health parlance as a “healing crisis.”  On the plus side, there is the potential for real progress in the midst of so much pain.  We may spend more time than we would like today feeling sorry for ourselves, but also may find ourselves connecting to others around us through shared pain and sadness.  Learning about subjects related to healing is favored today, as is recognizing that we may be able to do more to help others than we can for ourselves right now.

Toward mid-day today the Moon in Libra squared Pluto in Capricorn, putting our efforts to connect with others in the shadow of institutional powers and other forces larger than ourselves.  Pluto deals with deep transformation, including death and endings, so the Sun/Chiron conjunction’s emphasis on endings and sacrifice may have been heightened during this time, and we may have struggled with our equilibrium as a result.  Relationships may have been challenged either by control issues within those relationships or forces out of control of all parties concerned.  We may also have found our ability to work hampered by social issues, diplomatic wrangling, or unusually disruptive environments.

All of this set the stage for this afternoon’s conjunction between the Moon and Jupiter in Libra, amplifying our emotional responses and reaffirming our faith in our social connections.  Particularly when faced with the powers that be putting a monkey wrench in our peace and harmony, sometimes our friends and loved ones are the best medicine, or even social connections we never expected to prove so soothing.  Keep in mind that sometimes it takes disruption of our relationships and environments to show us how reliant we are on them, so this has not necessarily been an easy time, and we may find ourselves a bit emotionally raw and unsettled as a result.  Nonetheless, this time has been a reminder that we truly need our social connections and partnerships, not out of weakness or some flaw in our character, but rather because we are social creatures who are greater together than apart.  Since Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, this Moon/Jupiter conjunction is likely to have had lessons that are pertinent to the Sun/Chiron conjunction, giving us a boost of Jovian optimism and faith when we need it most.

Tonight the Moon in Libra opposes Uranus in Aries, taking that sense of social connection and confronting our need for personal freedom.  Since oppositions promote awareness, and the Moon/Jupiter conjunction followed by the Moon/Uranus opposition plugs into the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition, tonight is a time of heightened awareness of the balancing act between what we want for ourselves and what we want for our personal relationships and our society.  Uranus brings with it sudden change and disruption, and in opposition to the Moon can have our moods experiencing drastic fluctuations that may leave us shaken and even exhausted by the end.  Particularly against the backdrop of both ongoing social changes and the personal changes that are being emphasized by both Uranus in Aries and today’s Sun/Chiron conjunction, we may find our nerves frayed at this time, and our health tested even more as a result.  Sleep may be long in coming with this aspect, so we would do well to be gentle with ourselves and others at this time.  The Sun/Chiron conjunction does heighten the potential for wisdom attained through dreams, so when sleep does come, it is likely to be a welcome balm at the end of a trying day, and worth noting any messages attained come morning.

Astrology Update, March 12th, 2017: Full Moon in Virgo

The day started off early with a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning, giving our emotions and instincts the support of the powerful and transformative forces in our lives.  For those of us sleeping at that time we may have experienced dreams with messages that can assist us in achieving our long-term goals in the material world.  For those of us awake during that time, we may have experienced an alignment between process and direction, increasing our understanding of the practical steps we need to take in service to our growth and ambition.  Regardless of sleeping or waking, our health may have gotten a transformative boost during this time, though that doesn’t automatically lead to feeling better, as sometimes healing processes can actually make us feel worse before we see improvement.

One of the two big astrological happenings of the day is this morning’s square between Mercury in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius.  We may experience issues with our communication throughout the day, unexpected limitations and restrictions in communications technology, or in our transportation.  This could manifest as a greater possibility of automobile accidents, but could just as easily show up as a decreased inclination to set foot outside of the house.  This aspect particularly calls to mind the ongoing problems with the United States’ “Muslim Ban” travel restrictions, and we may see more destructive consequences from that executive order today.  Regardless, the areas with the most potential for conflict today are communications and journeys that come up against restrictive belief systems and rules or laws based in those systems.  Since Mercury in Pisces makes us more inclined to be compassionate, this square heightens our frustration with these kinds of restrictions, and Pisces’ impetus to let go of what no longer serves us directs us to actively reject them.  Of course, Saturn in Sagittarius shows where we engage in such limiting behavior out of a sense of fear and insecurity disguised as righteous wrath, and Piscean gentleness and sensitivity may be hard-pressed to stand up in the face of that.  Pisces also governs escapism, and many of us may simply want to run away from the abrasive restrictions that we are confronted with today.  Our best chance for navigating this aspect is in exercising patience and self-discipline alongside compassion and intuition, and recognize that there is an opportunity for change here.

That change is connected with whatever we saw ourselves needing to get rid of at the time of the New Moon, whatever patterns we needed to complete in order to prepare ourselves for new beginnings in our lives.  The intentions that we set then are coming to their fullness today with this morning’s Full Moon in Virgo.  Full Moons are a time to fully understand the intentions set at the New Moon on both the conscious and unconscious level, perfect them, and then release them into the world to be disseminated for the duration of the next two weeks until the next New Moon.  Since the New Moon that we set our intentions at for this Full Moon coincided with the Annular Solar Eclipse in Pisces, those intentions actually have a much longer period of effect, spreading out over the next six months to the time of the Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st, 2017.  Today’s Full Moon in Virgo then has our instincts filled with awareness of the many details involved in our process of growth and healing between now and then, with the sense of seriousness and discipline that Saturn imparts mediating between our unconscious instincts and our Piscean consciousness striving to integrate those Virgoan details into the whole picture, blending and unifying our individual goals and struggles into a more compassionate vision of wholeness.  Because Saturn is squaring both the Moon in Virgo and Mercury in Pisces today, health issues are likely to come to the forefront, particularly those that are difficult to diagnose and cure, such as chronic illnesses, including autoimmune disorders.  Our sense of process under this Full Moon is more fraught with difficulty and prone to depression, and our escapist tendencies may feel more out-of-control than usual, with addiction potentially being a key component.  Detoxification is a necessity at this time, and it is definitely a good day for spring cleaning to aid in ridding ourselves of whatever may be holding us back.

Because the Moon in Virgo quincunxes Uranus in Aries at the time of the Full Moon, sudden change is also a hallmark of both our experiences today and the Full Moon’s effects over the next couple of weeks.  We may find ourselves feeling especially rebellious in the face of the issues brought up under this Moon, and may take actions that we never expected of ourselves.  Or, those around us may believe that we are behaving unusually, even radically, and may take exception to our behavior as being unnecessarily provocative, even if we have no conscious intentions to provoke.  Today may feel unstable and unruly as a result, and we would do well to expect the unexpected over the next two weeks.  The Sun is also inconjunct (quincunx) Jupiter at the time of the Full Moon, not exact, but still in orb to affect the overall dynamic today and during this Moon’s disseminating period, and together with the Moon/Uranus inconjunct creates a closed formation that amplifies the energies of both the Full Moon and these quincunxes, increasing the uncomfortable, volatile feeling of this Moon, and tying the personal struggle for completion and healing into the larger struggle for balance between the personal need for freedom and the societal need for harmony and balance in interpersonal relationships.

This afternoon the Moon in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, continuing the emphasis on understanding the painful and traumatic patterns of our lives and how they have led us to our current state of ill-health, whether physical, mental, or emotional, personal or societal.  Now we are likely to see the little pieces in our history that contribute to the overall pattern, and gain a greater understanding of what parts of our past we need to make peace with in order to progress into a better future.  Difficult family histories are emphasized at this time, as well as the ways in which we feel better-equipped to help others than help ourselves, and we may struggle now with blurred personal boundaries that contribute to our pain.  On the plus side, our heightened awareness of these issues now increases the possibility of working through them, freeing ourselves of the chains of the past.

The Moon in Virgo squares Saturn in Sagittarius tonight and then shortly thereafter opposes Mercury in Pisces, creating a T-square aspect with today’s Mercury/Saturn square, with Saturn acting as the release point between Mercury and the Moon, as we strive to balance what we think and what we feel.  Saturn tends to create a deep sense of seriousness and even depression when in aspect to either the Moon or Mercury, so tonight we may find ourselves in a deep well of thought and feeling that if we are not careful can suck us down into despair.  Our fears and insecurities are likely to be heightened, feeling the pressure of the balancing act between thought and feeling, conscious awareness and unconscious reaction.  We may see the big picture but have trouble reacting in any way that does not stay mired down in details.  Or, we may know intuitively what we want and need, yet find it hard to master the process that will achieve what we desire.  Perhaps we need to steer ourselves away from a self-defeating perfectionism, but haven’t figured out how to halt our compulsions in their tracks, and the gloomy voice of time and mortality suggest that perhaps we never will.  The important part of navigating this difficult aspect configuration is to be patient with ourselves, staying mindful that no matter how dire things may seem, all is temporary.  Taking actions that help us to cultivate healthy habits can be incredibly helpful now in keeping us focused on growth and progress without getting lost in negativity.  This is especially true since the Moon/Mercury opposition starts a void-of-course period that can leave us feeling a bit lost – sticking to routine and focusing on the better side of habit tonight is the best course of action during this time.

Late tonight the Moon enters Libra, turning our instincts and emotions toward partnership and social harmony.  We may find that now we do not want to be alone, and for those of us in relationships our partners may help us in sorting through the feeling and revelations from this tumultuous day.  For those of us who are alone, we may find more solace in the arts and movement, as Libra is a Venus-ruled sign.  Regardless, this is a sign that is more dependent on surroundings, with or without people, so the next couple of days are good for further spring cleaning, as well as taking actions to promote balance in our lives and our environments.  We may find ourselves exercising decorative impulses, or taking more interest in our appearance, though we should be mindful that since Libra’s ruler Venus is currently in retrograde, what we are attracted to now may not be what we stay attracted to when Venus turns direct in April, so extreme make-overs might not be of lasting benefit.  Beware of impulse-buying at this time.  In business and leisure both, connecting with other people is favored under this Moon, so now is a good time to get out and meet with people, whether strengthening already-established connections or making new friends.  The Libra Moon can help us to balance the opposites we’ve been juggling recently, and perhaps give us some of the peace and harmony we’ve been craving.
