Astrology Update, March 7th, 2017: Through the Waves

This morning the Moon in Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces in the wee hours of the morning, potentially enhancing our dreams with the combination of Cancerian and Piscean emotional sensitivity and psychic abilities.  We would do well to write down whatever we remember of our dreams as soon after waking as possible, as we may learn much about our own emotional landscape by reflecting on our dreams today.

Still in the early morning hours, the Moon in Cancer squares Venus in Aries.  Since Venus has just recently turned retrograde, she is already on unsteady footing, especially due to being in the  reflective, introspective mode of retrograde in such an active and driven sign.  Squaring the Moon in Cancer just highlights her uncertainty now, adding Cancerian moodiness and self-protectiveness into the mix, leading to potential insecurity and standoffishness or even outright hostility in our early morning dealings with others – a classic case of waking up on the wrong side of the bed.  Since this is a lunar influence and therefore acts on an unconscious level, we would do well to recognize that plenty of people around us are likely to be testy without knowing why, and take steps to guard our own emotional well-being accordingly.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Cancer trines the Sun in Pisces, creating greater ease and flow in emotional and intuitive matters, increasing our sympathy and willingness to assist and support each other.  This adds to the residual effects of yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and may bolster those of us in healing and service professions accordingly.  This time favors nurturing ourselves and our loved ones, exercising compassionate listening in order to understand our emotional connections and reactions and strengthen our bonds with those we feel kinship with.  This is an excellent time to foster community, particularly with those who bolster us creatively and spiritually, and this influence may also help us to find common ground with those we had not previously recognized as sharing such connections.

The Moon in Cancer trines Mercury in Pisces shortly thereafter, further emphasizing the qualities of both the Moon/Sun trine and yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and increasing our capacity to communicate what we feel to others, as well as helping us to attune our thoughts and feelings, heightening our intuition and sensitivity.  Our thoughts may well turn to matters of home and family at this time, but may also benefit from Cancerian business sense now.  This is a good time for communications that benefit from a delicate touch, and breaking the ice in social settings may be easier now.

This afternoon, our emotions take on a degree of intensity as the Moon in Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn, pitting what we feel against the great impersonal forces of our lives that affect our careers, reputations, and long-term goals.  We may find ourselves feeling defensive now, or struggling to maintain emotional control.  We may find our moods hijacked by the interference of others, and need to guard against getting sucked into power struggles.  Now is definitely a time to step aside, take a deep breath, and channel the power of what we feel into the energy we need to get done what we can, while recognizing that even if this influence throws us off course during this time that derailment is still only temporary.

This evening the Moon in Cancer squares first Jupiter in Libra then Uranus in Aries in short succession, highlighting the lingering effects of last week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in close orb and will be continuing to influence us through mid-March.  Our emotions and reactions tonight are caught up in the tug-of-war between the personal and the societal, the desire for aggressive and radical action in service of personal freedom versus the desire for peace and social harmony at all costs, and we may find our interpersonal relationships affected as a result.  We may be prone to sudden outbursts of emotion or mood fluctuations, and Jupiter’s touch is likely to make everything feel larger than life.  This is a T-square formation with the Moon acting as the release point between Jupiter and Uranus, our emotions and instincts becoming the pressure valve for the personal and societal tensions pitted against each other.  We are navigating stormy waters during this time and the more sensitive among us may be hard-pressed to make it through without the support of our more stalwart companions.

Late tonight Mercury in Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, giving some support to our ability to communicate about the deepest, darkest parts of our experience now, and helping us further in shedding thought and communication patterns that no longer serve us.  This influence may also aid our facility to communicate with and about those in power.  Secrets may be revealed now, and occult matters are favored at this time.  For the magically inclined among us this is a good time for spell-working, particularly in relation to correcting power imbalances and defending the powerless from abuses of power.  Of course, this applies in more mundane realms as well.  This is a good time for tending to legal and monetary matters, and those working in the intelligence community may gain a boost at this time, as well as those working as detectives or researchers.  Tonight we may gain deeper insight into our own long-term goals and how we may fulfill our ambitions while being of service to humanity.

This aspect is followed by the Moon in Cancer trining Chiron in Pisces, putting us emotionally in-touch with our deepest hurts and damaging patterns in a deeply supportive way, so that we may use what we feel to help purge the poison of old traumas, and as a result share both greater vulnerability and greater closeness with those whom we love.  This tempest-tossed night comes to a close with a potential gift of deep, intuitive wisdom to dream on.

Astrology Update, March 6th, 2017: A Unifying Vision

The day started in the very wee hours with the Moon in Gemini sextiling Mars in Aries signaling the beginning of a void-of-course period lasting a few hours.  Since those of us in the Western Hemisphere who don’t work night shift were most likely asleep at this time, the most we were likely to get out of this supportive aspect were interesting dreams, the kind that are exploratory and tickle our curiosity in a Gemini fashion, or perhaps more driven and active in keeping with Mars’ placement in Aries.  Those of us who were awake at that time may have gotten a decent boost to our productivity so long as we stuck to our routines, though we could just as well have been insomniac writers or stayed up too late embroiled in Internet conversation (yep, that last was me).

A few hours later the Moon entered Cancer, the sign that it rules, heightening our emotional sensitivity, moodiness, and protectiveness, and putting our instincts firmly in the realm of caring for those we consider our own – friends, family, loved ones, even close business associates (despite being known as a sign of domesticity, Cancer can have remarkably good business acumen).  While the Moon is in Cancer it is a great time to strengthen our connections, tend to home repairs and spring cleaning, cooking and domestic projects, or the kinds of business interactions that require sensitivity and intuition.  Those of us in sales and service occupations could do well during this time, so long as we are operating out of a sense of genuine concern for helping our clients.  Since Cancer is a watery sign, our moods are especially prone to fluctuation now, and we want a mutually beneficial exchange in our interactions – we are more likely to fuss over those we care about and be attentive to their needs, but want the same kind of attention in return, and if that is not forthcoming we are likely to feel more hurt than usual by the discrepancy.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Cancer sextiled the North Node in Virgo, emphasizing the healing quality of both signs and giving us some extra impetus toward self-care, as well as helping us to understand how caring for others fits into our karmic path.  We may have experienced new insights regarding our health, home, family, or business, or gotten some extra support along the way from someone close to us, priming us to make good use of the boost in consciousness coming this afternoon.

The big astrological news of the day is the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury in Pisces.  Mercury is in a challenging place in Pisces, opposite Virgo, one of the two signs that it rules, and subject to Piscean tendency to blur boundaries that can hamper analytical thought.  Since Mercury rules two mutable signs and is known for speed, the changeability of Pisces is something that Mercury can work with, and Mercury in Pisces can have an uncanny ability to quickly pick up on the thoughts and intentions of others, thanks to the combination of speed and dissolution of boundaries, but those qualities can also lead to confusion, since it can be difficult for Mercury in Pisces to be certain what thoughts and intentions are truly one’s own.  Under a Piscean Mercury’s influence we can find our compassion and sympathy heightened and blending with the desires of others that we have mistaken for our own, and it can be very easy to get caught up in others’ needs, especially under an empathetic Cancerian Moon.  The Sun conjuncting Mercury now heightens the Piscean influence, but also lends brilliance and awareness to Mercury, making it easier for us to utilize the best of Mercury’s capabilities at this time.  We can communicate with greater kindness and sensitivity, intuitively grasp information and gain a full sense of the big picture that may have previously eluded us.  We are more likely to gain insights that can help others around us and help ourselves to take great steps forward in our own spiritual and psychological development.  We may gain a clearer understanding of our own patterns of self-sabotage and martyrdom, with a greater chance of releasing what we no longer need or want, in preparation for new beginnings this spring.  This is a great time for creative endeavors, as well as breakthroughs in medicine and compassionate service in healing professions.  Now is a time of heightened awareness of our interconnectedness as a species and as an entire planet.  And because Mercury conjuncting the Sun can lead us to identify with our ideas, this is a time to be aware that while we may not literally be our ideas, our ideas now can reshape who we are for years to come.  Pisces represents the end of the zodiac, and the end of a cycle, a time to make our peace with who we are and what we have done, and cast off outmoded ideas that have held us back for too long.  Now is the time to bring our most compassionate natures and ideas into the light, like seeds sending new shoots breaking through the dark earth and unfurling into the coming spring.

Astrology Update, March 5th, 2017: Possibility and Reality

We are still feeling the effects of Venus stationing retrograde yesterday and will start to feel the effects of tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction as the day progresses.  Though Mercury in Pisces is not known for mental acuity and can be easily confused on the level of strictly analytical thought, still it is highly intuitive and capable of reading people well enough to pluck others’ thoughts seemingly out of mid-air, and tomorrow’s Sun/Mercury conjunction may make us highly conscious of our intuitive capabilities in both thought and communication.  Since Mercury is the ruler of Gemini, the sign that the Moon is transiting throughout today, our emotional and instinctive reactions may take some of this intuitive flavor, though the emphasis will still be on the classically Gemini qualities of curiosity, mental flexibility, communication, and speed.

In true Gemini fashion the Moon started the day off quickly enough with a sextile to Venus in Aries shortly after the witching hour and then a square to Mercury less than an hour later.  That Moon/Venus sextile was likely to inspire some emotional impulsiveness, especially in terms of our interactions with others, and may have inspired more than a few of us to stay up later than usual as a result of Gemini curiosity fueling the Aries desire for action.  However, the square with Mercury may have reinforced the more difficult qualities of Mercury in Pisces – the brain fog and confusion resulting from Piscean blurring of boundaries within our thoughts and communication, made all the more potent by the residual effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Neptune conjunction.  It’s just as well that this was happening during the wee hours of the morning for those of us in the continental United States.  For those of us working night shift, this could well have made for problems with concentration and communication and even fine motor skills.

Closer to dawn, the Moon in Gemini squared the Sun in Pisces, creating a challenge from our unconscious to our conscious selves.  The First Quarter Moon is a time of crisis in the build-up of energies connected to the intentions that we set at the New Moon/Eclipse, energies that will continue to build up to their release point at the Full Moon.  This First Quarter Moon sees our emotions and instincts in the mental sign of Gemini and our core consciousness in the emotional and intuitive sign of Pisces, which may have us feeling as though things are flipped on their heads and may result in us questioning what is real.  On the plus side, Gemini is great at synthesizing information and Pisces is great at integrating opposites and working within paradoxes, so these two signs are well-equipped to process conflicting data, but we still may find ourselves swimming in a bit of information overload during this time, information that requires a unified effort on both the conscious and unconscious levels to make use of.

The big astrological news of the day is this afternoon’s trine from Mars in Aries to Saturn in Sagittarius, creating a powerfully supportive connective between our drive and our discipline.  Mars in Aries is already potent, being in one of the signs that he rules, but adding Saturn’s patience and steadying influence now helps us to keep from raging forward impatiently and instead applies our focus with Saturnine direction, recognizing the perils and pitfalls that we must avoid, especially on the ideological front, and using our challenges and restrictions as a necessary part of the refining process to make the actions that we take now more likely to yield the results that we desire.  This afternoon is a time to make use of our energy and ambition, knowing that we have a greater capacity to do so with wisdom and integrity, aligning the needs of the self (Aries) with the needs of the bigger picture (Sagittarius).  Physical activity is favored now, as well as tackling the tough jobs we previously were reluctant to face.  Mars in connection with Saturn gives us the courage to face our fears, while Saturn keeps that courage from turning into foolhardiness.  This is a great time to break through procrastination, as we have the confidence now to work through our insecurities, calmly and steadily but also with just the right touch of excitement.  This is the intersection of possibility and reality, so it’s time to take advantage of it and use it to take those bold and necessary steps into the future that we’ve held back on for far too long.

To add to this boost in our personal power is a trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra a little later in the afternoon, increasing our inventiveness and curiosity as well as our instinctive responsiveness to others.  This helps us to take those Mars/Saturn-driven actions in ways that don’t run counter to our purposes in social realms, instead facilitating our communication skills and our optimism in supportive and exciting ways.  We may find ourselves flying high on a sense of hope and fun during this time, but since we are being constructively grounded by that Mars/Saturn trine, we can enjoy our mood this afternoon while still making good progress on the things that matter to us and not floating too far into the ether.  The trine from the Moon in Gemini to Jupiter in Libra particularly enhances our good fortune in groups, especially when utilizing our communicative and technological skills and keeping a sense of lightheartedness.

The mood of inventiveness and stimulation continues this afternoon and into early evening with the Moon in Gemini sextiling Uranus in Aries, and since the Moon is making contact with both Jupiter and Uranus in short order it does activate the recent Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in orb to have lingering effects on our lives in connection with our individual identities and our relationships.  The Moon sextiling Uranus now adds to the unpredictability and inventiveness of this afternoon’s mix, encouraging us to think outside of the box and utilizing new strategies and technologies to achieve our aims.  Uranus is a revolutionary, so our instinct now is to break free from constricting patterns and cast an eye toward the future while being mindful of what we truly want for ourselves, not just what society tries to convince us we want.

As the evening progresses, our moods may take a more somber turn as the Moon in Gemini squares Chiron in Pisces, dredging up old hurtful patterns in both our own lives and the lives of those close to us.  We may find our earlier chattiness has inadvertently stepped on some toes, or our attempts to break new ground for ourselves have conjured up ghosts from our pasts that must be laid to rest before we can make real progress, and since our instincts are still set to Gemini’s fun-loving and somewhat flippant mode, we may experience some confusion as to what is actually going on and why the fun seems to have turned sour.

The moodiness brought on by this aspect is only exacerbated late tonight by the Moon in Gemini opposing Saturn in Sagittarius, turning our moods somber and even depressive.  All of the action of the day is still only a drop in the bucket of what needs to be done to get our world back on course, and that sobering sense of reality is Saturn’s stock-in-trade, deflating the Gemini giddiness that had us whirling through much of the day.  Our pace becomes slower now, whether or not we want it to.  Gemini tends to be an insomniac and Saturn tends to remind us of our limitations, so I expect that more than a few of us will encounter sleeping challenges tonight, whether of the variety that keeps us up tossing and turning or the type that knocks us out much earlier than anticipated, with still so much left in need of doing.  Since we will still be feeling some residual effects of the Mars/Saturn trine into tomorrow, however, navigating tonight’s Moon/Saturn opposition is really a matter of awareness of what is necessary to keep our engines running, and the recognition that tomorrow is another day, with new possibilities to build into realities.

Astrology Update, March 2nd, 2017: Imaginative Balance

The Moon’s influence today is consistently benevolent, which is a blessing after the uproar of yesterday.  Still, we are laboring through the lingering fog of yesterday’s Sun/Neptune conjunction, and this evening sees the second of three exact oppositions from Jupiter to Uranus making a recipe for bedlam despite the Taurus Moon’s steadying touch.

This morning at least things started off decently enough, with the Moon in Taurus trining the North Node in Virgo, aligning our emotions and instincts with our sense of purpose, helping us to tend to the necessary details along our karmic path, learning new skills and being mindful of the process in our growth while responding to our circumstances with a practical attitude grounded in real life and strong sensory impressions.  This is a great environment for getting things done!

This afternoon the Moon sextiles Mercury in Pisces, bringing a more imaginative flavor to what we feel while steadying our minds and communication so that our imaginations don’t run away with us.  This is a perfect time to take creative inspiration and make good use of it in the real world, as our instincts now are thoroughly practical yet capable of seeing the usefulness in what we can dream up.  Our attitudes and communication are likely to be tolerant and compassionate now, making it easier to work with others during this time, though under this influence we can work just as well alone, enjoying some quiet introspection and the practical results it may bring.

The big astrological news of today is the opposition from Jupiter in Libra to Uranus in Aries early this evening.  I’ve talked about this aplenty as an ongoing influence stretching from the winter holidays through until September.  This is the second of three exact oppositions between Jupiter and Uranus, resulting from Jupiter’s current retrograde through Libra that has us reconsidering our beliefs in connection with relationships and social harmony, as well as reviewing and revising our attitudes regarding good fortune and luck, and what creates abundance in our lives.  Uranus opposing Jupiter today creates sudden shake-ups in our attitudes surrounding these areas of our lives, and reminds us that success is meaningless without the freedom to enjoy it.  Uranus in Aries is all about independence, as well as progress, new technologies, and the flashes of insight that lead us into the future.  Uranus is a revolutionary that will not be satisfied by maintaining the status quo, and in connection with Jupiter can lead to unusual twists and turns in our fortunes.  Out-of-the-box thinking is magnified today, and with Mercury in Pisces could well take an imaginative turn – keep in mind that Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces, so what affects Jupiter affects the sign and the planets in it, including the Sun and Neptune and the residual effects of yesterday’s conjunction.  Jupiter in Libra seeks good fortune in connections, while Uranus in Aries opposing him reminds us not to get too cozy in our efforts at diplomacy, lest we forget ourselves in the name of keeping the peace.  Since Jupiter does affect wealth, we would also do well to be mindful of our finances at this time – we could see sudden expenses popping up now, and we should be careful about impulse buys.

This evening sees the Moon in Taurus sextiling Neptune in Pisces, heightening the imaginative quality of the evening and increasing our desire for some self-indulgent escapism.  Luckily this is a harmonious aspect, steadying our escapist tendencies with Taurean practicality and softening the Taurus Moon’s bluntness with Neptunian spirituality and Piscean compassion.  Taurus is ruled by sensual Venus and Pisces is both sensual and connective, while the Moon/Neptune sextile turns our emotions and instincts romantic, so this may be a time to soften the edges of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition’s effects on our relationships with a more intimate perspective.

Later tonight the Moon in Taurus sextiles the Sun in Pisces, heightening the connection between these two signs and the sensual affection that their combination inspires.  These harmonious and connective aspects coming on the heels of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition suggest that whatever changes this opposition brings to our attitudes regarding the balance between self and other have a strong potential to be integrated through shared enjoyment of connection within the physical world, and our practical feelings can be enhanced through compassion and intimacy as well.  Yes, our sense of stability can be shaken and our optimism come into question, but we can also find new ways to experience and express what is best in our relationships, and feel a sense of oneness that is informed by our diverse experiences.  Balancing the needs of the self and the collective may not be the easiest of tasks.  But under tonight’s Moon/Sun sextile it might get a bit easier.

Astrology Update, March 1st, 2017: Wild Ideas

Today got off to an early and potentially cranky start with the Moon in Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn this morning, amplifying the power of our emotional and instinctive responses and increasing the potential for control issues to take center stage.  Both Aries and Capricorn can be headstrong, and Aries in particular is not known for holding back on its hair-trigger temper, making any power struggles resulting from this aspect that much more explosive.  Pluto in Capricorn is all about transformative forces related to the powers-that-be, and the Moon in Aries has us instinctually focused on what serves our own identities and goals as individuals, so there was a strong likelihood of conflicts between individual desires and institutionally-enforced standards this morning.  Since the Moon governs the unconscious, of course, this would all be likely to play out in ways that people were not consciously aware of, adding to the potential frustration.

Unfortunately, this frustration probably didn’t ease up as the morning progressed.  Toward mid-day our emotions and instincts got a double-whammy from the Moon conjuncting Uranus in Aries and then within minutes opposing Jupiter in Libra, reinforcing the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition and its balancing act between individual and societal/relationship needs.  Moon/Uranus conjunctions tend to make us feel scattered and impulsive, even more so in already-impulsive Aries, and heighten our desire for freedom at all costs.  Libra on the other hand wants peace at all costs, even at the cost of being a doormat, and Jupiter in Libra adds the weight of authority to that desire.  After the Moon/Pluto square, chances are that we were already chafing under the weight of societal expectations and forces larger than ourselves, with that feeling dialed to the limit by the Moon/Uranus conjunction, so Jupiter could well have dumped kerosene on that particular fire.

And if we thought things couldn’t get more explosive, think again – this afternoon Mars just had to throw his hat in the ring, with the Moon conjuncting Mars and setting our already testy emotions on full-combat mode.  Our instinctive reactions are now aggressive, driven, and full of energy, ready to set the world ablaze in order to get what we want, which could just be payback against whatever restricting influence has us most riled up at the moment.  Unfortunately, as already noted, this morning’s restrictions were most likely of the authoritarian and institutional variety, so there may be more than a few David-and-Goliath scenarios playing out as I write.  Those of us finding ourselves in the midst of the inferno today need to take a deep breath and ask ourselves if this fight is something we really want, and if we’re ready and able to face the consequences once it’s underway.  If not, it’s time to take a step back and get our feelings in check, or better yet, find a more productive way to channel our anger and vent our frustrations.  Righteous anger can move mountains, but picking unwinnable fights may not be what is required, unless we’re well and truly backed into a corner with no other options, in which case, it may well be time to stand our ground, and Mars conjuncting the Moon will certainly give us the vigor to do just that.

This evening, that vigor continues in a more sobering fashion as the Moon trines Saturn, signaling that it’s time to get serious about what we feel, assess the limitations and restrictions that we are facing, and get ready to dig in for the long haul in terms of what we want and how we’re going to go about achieving it, particularly in relation to our beliefs and ideals and how we manifest them in the world at large.  This is a good time to take whatever today’s wildfires stirred up and temper our intentions, combining both passion and elbow grease to our goals.  Since this trine starts a void-of-course period lasting for a few hours, routine tasks are favored now, and while they may be unglamorous our Saturn-steadied emotions are now thoroughly up to these tasks, ready to grind through whatever needs to be done in service to our larger vision.

Of course, this happens just in time for that vision to face some potential clouding by the Sun conjuncting Neptune in Pisces, an aspect of potential confusion that began affecting our judgement yesterday and will continue into tomorrow.  On one hand, Neptune is concerned with spiritual matters and creativity, breaking down boundaries between us and encouraging unifying and imaginative experiences, which are now foremost in our consciousness thanks to this contact with the Sun.  On the other hand, Neptune can encourage us to get lost in fantasy, spinning fables to ourselves and others, whether based in wishful hyperbole, delusion, or outright deception.  Our desire to escape into such stories as well as drugs and alcohol could get us into a real pickle at this time, especially after this tension-filled day that may already have been worsened by this influence sending our tempers after entirely the wrong targets.  Now is a time to be careful in trying to understand our perceptions, not committing to promises (ours or others’) nor contracts for at least another couple of days.  We are likely to be wearing rose-coloured glasses tonight, and while that could well be a relief after the day’s frustrations, we should use them judiciously in favor of creative and spiritual pursuits, spending time with people we trust in pursuit of whatever form of escapism we can safely enjoy now, and not getting bogged down in elusive details that are likely to change shape in the clearer light of morning.

On the plus side, in the midst of all of this watery and bewitching Piscean dreamland, the Moon throws us a lifeline by entering practical and earthy Taurus, helping our emotions at least to get a firmer grip on what is real.  Since Taurus is the most materially-oriented of the signs, we are likely to be most interested in matters of material security at this time, and are also going to want to take things slow and steady.  Creature comforts are favored now – good food, good drink, and sensory pleasures, preferably without thinking too hard about all of that etherial Neptunian nonsense.  Of course, since Taurus and Pisces work harmoniously together, this Moon is not directly countering our Neptunian fantasies, just giving us something to ground ourselves with on an instinctual level.  Be prepared to want more sleep than usual (good time for Neptune-inspired dreaming!) and have trouble sticking to diets.  Rather than fighting our desire to retreat into comfort food, if we can find a way to take pleasure in eating and doing what is healthy for us we can make the most of this time and use it to stay grounded while our conscious minds expand their limits and our imaginations run wild.

Please keep in mind that we all have different responses to the aspects of the day because we all have different natal and progressed charts with which these aspects interact.  If you would like to know more about your own natal and progressed charts in order to better understand how the aspects of the day will affect you, please take a look at my astrological services, and let’s get started on helping you to understand your life better!
