Astrology of December 11th, 2016: Balancing Act

Today isn’t necessarily a bad day, just a little off-kilter and in need of some mindfulness.  It starts off in the morning strongly enough with a trine from the Moon in Taurus to Pluto in Capricorn, combining power and control with emotional stability, making us feel solid, steady, and goal-oriented, with enough intensity to push through obstacles but no real interest in upsetting the apple cart.

However, the late morning and early afternoon see a trio of Lunar inconjuncts in short succession, where those steady, earthy emotions feel at odds with the larger forces in our lives via Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun, and we may find ourselves reaching for clarity.  It’s as though we’re a little depressed and not quite certain of our luck, but can’t quite understand being serious or disciplined either, and don’t really feel like ourselves either way.  We may feel as though we have to balance several slightly discordant feelings and experiences carefully, without ever getting full satisfaction out of any of them.

The evening sees a less uncertain emotional landscape, but with the Moon squaring Mars in Aquarius it may also be a lot more cranky, aggressive, and even explosive if we let things get out of control.  Those stable, comfort-oriented Taurean emotions and instincts that we were feeling this morning are now at odds with a sense of drive and aggression that wants newness and mental stimulation, leading to impatience with ourselves and others if our environment fails to deliver.  Since our instincts under a Taurus Moon are to curl up at home or in some other cozy environment, we’re not too keen on leaving our comfort zone in search of new experiences, but our energies are restless and won’t let us lie back and take it easy.  The Moon/Mars square starts a Lunar void-of-course period that lasts until morning, so we don’t want to use this restlessness to start anything too important.  Like the uncertainty earlier in the day, this may take a bit of a balancing act to see through, especially because the Moon squaring Mars tends to make us accident-prone and have difficulty being around other people.  Finding ways to off steam without leaving too much wreckage in our wake is the name of this game, and since Lunar aspects are short-lived, at least we know that this too shall pass before the night is out.

Addendum:  Somehow when I initially wrote this post, I overlooked the fact that the Sun in Sagittarius trines Uranus in Aries shortly before the end of the night.  This may add to the agitation of the Moon/Mars square, feeding Mars in Aquarius’ need for excitement, but it may also serve up something new to satisfy that hunger.  Since this aspect is longer-lasting than the Lunar aspects that have dominated the day, I suspect that this may make for a night of insomnia, or at the very least unusual dreams…

Astrology of December 10th, 2016: Goals and Comforts

The waxing Saturn/Neptune square gets an oblique revival today, with two sextiles supporting Neptune and the Sun conjuncting Saturn.  Since the sextiles are supporting aspects, they may ease some of the tension of these two outer planets each trying to transform the other and us in the process, but regardless our awareness of the conflict between the real and the ideal is likely to get a shot in the arm.  That said, given the overall positive tone of the day’s aspects, I wouldn’t be surprised if that boost to our awareness lends a practical tone to our daydreams, or a spiritual note to our work.

The two biggest aspects of the day actually struck during the wee hours of the morning – Mercury in Capricorn sextile Neptune in Pisces and the Sun in Sagittarius conjunct Saturn in Sagittarius.  Of the two, the Sun conjunct Saturn is definitely the heavy hitter.  With the Sun and Saturn meeting at the tail end of the second decanate of Sagittarius, we may get very serious about our beliefs and goals, and feel a determination to eliminate that which we register as “evil” or opposed to our world view.  Mercury in Capricorn sextile Neptune in Pisces may help to soften the intensity of our self-righteousness, or at least help us to see the possibility that there are more ways to experience the world than in simplistic factions of “us or them,” but both Mercury in Capricorn and Saturn in Sagittarius have a tendency toward bluntness, so the early morning hours may find us at our most tactless.

The Moon entered earthy Taurus shortly thereafter, which has had the benefit of grounding and steadying our emotions, but a square to Venus in Aquarius later in the morning can add to the potential friction stirred up by the Sun conjuncting Saturn.  Still, there is also the potential that the Sun conjunct Saturn will help us with our self-discipline, making this morning a good time to get things done so long as we don’t require others to work with us, though with the Moon in Taurus at odds with Taurus’ ruler Venus, some of that self-discipline is likely to peter out by late morning.  The Moon square Venus is not likely to be anywhere near as harsh as other squares, as both the Moon and Venus tend to be sympathetic forces, but in this aspect they do tend to encourage self-indulgence.  Given the serious bent of the Sun conjuncting Saturn though, a little self-indulgence might be needed to balance the scales.

This evening the Moon in Taurus gently brings our attention back to Neptune in Pisces with another sextile, giving a slightly dreamy tone to the evening, but with the fixed earth nature of Taurus continuing to keep us grounded, especially with the Moon/Neptune sextile followed shortly by the Moon trining Mercury in Capricorn.  This is a great time to enjoy a hint of Neptune’s rose-coloured glasses without succumbing to confusion or delusion, and also to express what we feel in a practical manner.  This is a good night for conversation with friends, and a good time to enjoy some creature comforts and unwind.

Tarot for December 9th, 2016: Adjustment (reversed)

Today’s Tarot card is (VIII) Adjustment, reversed.

Adjustment is ruled by Libra, and in the Thoth deck shows a woman carefully balanced on the tip of a sword, putting all of her concentration into centering herself with her toes on either side of the sword tip.  A large set of scales descends from chains attached to her headdress, seemingly the heaviest object in a scene filled with feathers and spheres resting above and below sharp-tipped pyramidal structures.  The Alpha and Omega within the scales speak to the need to find harmony between polarities.  The feathers and stylized Egyptian-ish headdress evoke Ma’at, Egyptian goddess of truth, whose symbol is the feather weighed against the heart of the deceased in ancient Egyptian funerary scenes, with the object of that judgement being to have a heart that is lighter than the feather of Ma’at.  Adjustment evokes both precision and lightness that come from being very clear and centered in one’s knowledge of one’s self, surroundings, and circumstances.  Thus, this card is associated with meditation, and also with weighing multiple viewpoints objectively before arriving at a decision.

With Jupiter in Libra sextile to the Sun in exuberant Sagittarius, plus a whole host of lively Lunar alignments throughout the day, the likelihood of getting stillness and objective clarity today is probably minimal.  This is not necessarily a bad thing though.  It suggests that if you are in the process of making an important decision requiring careful thought and balancing viewpoints, you may want to put it off until you do have some time and space to yourself (such as tomorrow morning, when the Sun conjuncts Saturn and a bit more seriousness prevails).

It should be noted however, that the Adjustment card also warns against becoming paralyzed by indecision as a result of weighing too many options.  Sometimes we need to just cut to the chase!  And with the decisive influences in the heavens today (Aries, Aries, and more Aries…) now may well be the time to act if what you need to do can benefit from a little less precision and a lot more enthusiasm.  Whether reversed or not, Adjustment does ask us to be mindful of cause and effect and our personal responsibility, so we should be mindful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  But fortune favors the bold, and with Jupiter in Adjustment’s ruling sign of Libra interacting with both the Moon and Sun in fire signs today, I suspect that boldness will win out over delicacy.  😉

Astrology of December 9th, 2016: Time to Frolic!

Today sees a full day of Lunar aspects, and while they do swing back and forth between the supportive and the potentially challenging, those influences are still well-balanced, with nothing too challenging hitting us without some cosmic support immediately coming in to ease our way through any rough spots.  Plus, those challenges help to keep the day moving, giving us the impetus to make great progress in the first half of the day and then revel in the second half if we make good use of the energy and excitement of all of these connections.

The day starts off with the Moon in Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn, bringing our emotions and instincts up against issues of power and control.  As with all of the Lunar aspects, we may not be consciously aware that something is amiss, but under the surface we feel Pluto’s intensity pushing up against our feelings, heightening our sense of discomfort with whatever institutional forces we may be chafing against in our lives right now.  There is power in what we feel though, and while it may not be comfortable, it could still be a good impetus to get the day going, so long as we don’t succumb to road rage along the way…  😉

A supporting trine between the Moon and the Sun can smooth things over a few hours later, giving our subconscious the comfort of the Sun’s presence in enthusiastic Sagittarius to bolster our heroic instincts and bring a sense of joy to the morning.  With the Moon opposing Jupiter in short succession, that ebullience may become a bit giddy and grand, but with a trine from the Moon to serious Saturn in Sagittarius following soon after, that giddiness feels a steadying influence and gets the structure and discipline to see your grand ideals through.

The Moon conjuncting Uranus in Aries this afternoon may bring some unexpected changes, but with the Sun in Sagittarius sextiling Jupiter in Libra shortly thereafter, those changes are likely to be positive, or at the very least nothing we can’t handle, as Jupiter favors good fortune.   The combination of the two biggest gravitational forces in our solar system bringing light and luck in the social signs of Sagittarius and Libra may result in the afternoon’s productivity dissolving into the need for fun and a desire to take off for the weekend a bit early.  Given the holiday season, however, this may turn out to be right on time, and with the Moon in Aries sextiling Aries’ ruler Mars in Aquarius in the early evening, our conscious desire for fun and social activity is backed up by our emotions and our drive, so that we can’t help but want to kick up our heels and be social!  If we don’t have party plans already, now is the time to make them!  And since the Moon turns void-of-course with that Mars sextile, by the time evening rolls around there’s really nothing that should be done that can’t wait until morning, while we enjoy the best of what a night in this season can offer with friends and family.

Astrology of December 7th, 2016: Turning Inward

All of the celestial action today happens in the early morning hours, a flurry of activity before the Moon turns void-of-course and Venus enters Aquarius, and the day seems to hover in a dreamy null space.

The Moon squares the Sun in the wee hours of the morning, moving into its 2nd Quarter, and shortly after that sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, giving a shot of Plutonian power that may have interesting results in your dreams.  If you are reading this soon after waking, I suggest that you take time to write down anything you remember from your dreams at this time, as there may be information there that will be useful to you later.

After that the morning gets serious, with the Moon first inconjuncting Jupiter in Libra and then squaring Saturn in Sagittarius.  To have the Moon in Pisces in a state of incomprehension with the classical ruler of Pisces (Jupiter) does not seem to bode well, but remember that within the process of working through confusion there may be valuable lessons to be gleaned, and Jupiter is known for faith, not negativity.  That said, Jupiter magnifies what it touches, including the confusion of an inconjunct involving Pisces, and with the Moon/Saturn square following shortly on its heels there is a propensity here for moodiness and depression, as Saturn challenges our emotional sensitivity with the limitations of cold, hard reality.

Perhaps it’s best then that this last aspect of the day is followed by the void-of-course Moon, extending from this morning through until tomorrow morning.  The void-of-course Moon is best suited toward introspection, decluttering, tending to the daily routine, and working things out on one’s own without diving into any brave new ventures.  With Venus entering Aquarius soon after the Moon turns void-of-course, our affections may be more social than our fortunes, but given the pleasure that Aquarius takes in exploring ideas, curling up with a book and sorting out the moods of the day that way may be just what the doctor ordered.
