Astrology Update, January 24th-25th, 2018, In the Wake of the 1st Quarter Moon

“Today’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus sees the first challenge in this lunar cycle to the intentions we set at last week’s New Moon in Capricorn and have been building on since….”

I started to write about last night’s 1st Quarter Moon in Taurus and stopped. I’d been struggling with writer’s block all day and into the night, not simply at a loss for words, but rather feeling the need to work with the energies of this moon phase through visual art instead of writing. Or at least find some balance between the two, to find the path of least resistance in working with the inherent challenge of the First Quarter Moon’s square between the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Taurus, two fixed signs who each have no interest in moving to accommodate the other.

To successfully navigate this kind of challenge we need to really feel it, not just emotionally, but kinaesthetically, as a voraciously thinking and socially attuned Solar Consciousness just bumped up against our instinctive desire to take pleasure in the physical world. In a society which has long valued mind over matter and upheld the supremacy of the soul over the body, the visual over the tactile, coming to a real place of understanding between the two is no small feat.

Why does it say “avowed hedonist” toward the end of the self-description in my header on Twitter? Because I believe that we should enjoy our lives enthusiastically and unashamedly or not at all. Ourselves, just as we are. We all have our little indulgences, material or otherwise. And the “otherwise” is heightened now with Mercury conjuncting Pluto reviving the last reverberations of Pluto’s waxing square to Uranus that has caused so much societal and personal disruption in recent years.  Mercury’s conjunction to Pluto eeking out the last bit of growth potential from that Pluto/Uranus square has heightened the potential for challenging sudden changes in thought or speech at a time when our obsessions and compulsions are exerting a powerful influence on our minds.  As Mercury sextiles Jupiter today and moves forward toward the exact square to Uranus this upcoming Sunday, plus with Jupiter’s recent sextile to Pluto still in effect, we are likely to find these mental changes and unusual conversations more and more challenging, confronted with ideas that may seem too radical in the context of the status quo, yet we also have an increased capacity to make use of the transformative power of Pluto’s influence, to gain greater awareness of our own subconscious motivations and come to a greater sense of wholeness in the process, if we are willing to face the parts of ourselves we have not previously recognized.

Both the classical and modern rulers of Aquarius have coloured our thoughts and feelings over the past 24 hours, with Saturn in Capricorn trine the Moon in Taurus at the time of the First Quarter Moon, increasing the strength of our emotions yesterday, and we have felt these over the course of the night in our bones, slowly, steadily, the daily processes of our experiences informing our psyches, rippling both outward and inward. Saturn is all about process, all about slow and steady progress over time, and very much about the body – working within the limitations of the physical form, but also grounding ourselves and our feelings at a time when the forward-thinking consciousness of the Sun in Aquarius might easily send us too far out into space, too far into our future and not mindful enough of the present.

Drawing for me is a very embodied process – more than one person who knows me and my artwork has commented on the clear connection between my drawings and my dancing, as there is always a sense of movement within my best work. The drawing that is a part of this post is by no means a completed drawing, but rather a continuation of a glorified doodle that I started a while back and hadn’t initially intended to do much else with. And I will probably end up painting over it at some later date. But for the moment, it is a good reminder of the need to be patient with the process in this lunar cycle and in this coming year, to be mindful of our bodies as we pursue our minds’ goals and our social causes, and to give ourselves recognition for the progress we are making while recognizing that we still have a long way to go. The journey may be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be painful.

Astrology of February 18th, 2017: Confronting Illusions

We start the day with the Moon void-of-course in Scorpio, afloat in a sea of deep emotion and unconscious knowing.  The Sun entering Pisces in the early morning hours further emphasizes the dreamlike state of the void-of-course period, and we should exercise some caution when starting the day in this floating state.  Now is not the time for crucial decision-making or bold moves, and we should stick to our routines as much as possible until the Moon enters Sagittarius toward mid-day.

Less than an hour later the Moon squares the Sun, pitting active, idealistic, emotions and reactions against a conscious desire for both more connection and more escapism.  Our core selves are more sensitive under a Pisces Sun, more compassionate and spiritual, and more in-touch with our feelings, both emotional and sensory.  On the plus side, both Pisces and Sagittarius are ruled by benevolent Jupiter, so both carry a certain degree of optimism, but the Sagittarian Moon’s tendency to rush in where angels fear to tread may create excess stress for the more gentle side of our consciousness being awakened by the Piscean Sun.  Our emotions and instinctive reactions under this Moon may be spoiling for a (thoroughly justified) fight on ideological grounds, but our Piscean consciousness has been around the block for a few lives and seen how that tends to end, and therefore wants us to find a less combative solution.  Of course, Pisces is notorious for allowing the desire to help others to turn us into doormats, so the peaceful approach isn’t automatically the right move either.  This is the beginning of the last quarter of our current lunar cycle, and this square challenges us to find the means of disseminating the intentions that we set at the New Moon in Aquarius and brought to fullness at the Full Moon and eclipse in Leo, in a way that shoots straight to the truth of the matter (Sagittarius) while having compassionate perspective (Pisces) and combining head and heart with the wisdom and will toward social and internal growth that (hopefully) can keep us from repeating past mistakes.

A very short time later the Moon conjuncts Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius at the critical 0 degree of that sign, the space in which all of the sign’s possibilities are held, the first lessons ready to be learned.  Black Moon Lilith has been likened to a female Mars, focused, driven, and sexually aggressive.  Hers is an instinctive wisdom, the place where the Moon is closest to the Sun (and furthest from the Earth), so it is intriguing to see the Moon conjuncting her so soon after the Sun/Moon square, visiting her place of deep knowing that has the capacity to bridge the gap between two, the place where the personal and the political meet.  Here we may meet our own most destructive illusions, so that we may confront them, move through them, grow past them.  Black Moon Lilith has a powerful effect on relationship dynamics, and we may find an edge to our emotions surrounding our more significant relationships during this time that challenges our ability to be both vulnerable and centered in our own power with each other.

This series of challenges continues with the Sun in Pisces squaring Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius in the early evening, stretching out the effects of the previous two aspects and forcing us to see where our focus and our instincts are leading us, and how that conflicts with our desire to escape from the consequences of the ideologies we have immersed ourselves in, particularly those chosen unconsciously, accepted unquestioningly.  Our souls’ passions are brought to the surface, but through the lens of the Piscean Sun we may still see only what we want to, resisting the wisdom that both our watery consciousness and fiery instincts can offer if we can just find a means of integrating them both.  Pisces is symbolized by two fishes tied together at the tails, swimming in opposite directions, a visual key to the sign’s ability to navigate paradox.  If any sign can do it, Pisces can.  With this string of challenging aspects, we’ll need all of the wisdom Pisces can muster.

Especially since it’s not over with the Sun/Black Moon Lilith square, as a short while later the Moon in Sagittarius squares the North Node in Virgo, bringing our emotions that are burning with the fire of Lilith’s confrontational wisdom to bump heads with our karmic purpose for some potential course-correction of the painful-learning-experience variety.  North Node in Virgo is a bit detail-obsessed, while the Moon in Sagittarius is far more enamoured of the big picture and inclined to rush through the messy details.  And driven instinctually toward soul-reforging experience by Black Moon Lilith, we may find ourselves so emotionally consumed that any encounter with the Virgoan desire for perfection becomes a dizzying whirlwind of overwhelm, or a chain around our necks, rather than the steady growth process that our life lessons have been favoring during this past year.

On the plus side, if navigated successfully, today promises a whole lot of potential for growth on a deep, soul level.  On the downside, this string of hard aspects is likely to be hard on us on many levels, so lots of self-care is likely to be needed at the end of it all (and during as well).  Our path is a rocky one today, but our climbing skills will benefit from it.

Astrology of January 19th, 2017: Authority and Rebellion

The day started out pleasantly enough with the Moon in Libra sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius in the very wee hours, following on the heels of last night’s Moon/Jupiter conjunction with the magnitude of last night’s emotions getting a steadying influence from Saturn, and the Moon in Libra’s harmonizing influence gentling our insecurities.  Which was deeply needed with Mars in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius just 20 minutes later…  These are the two trouble-making planets of classical astrology, the Lesser and Greater Malefic, and having them square off in the most challenging aspect pits aggression against fear; needless to say, this does not bode well for the day, and since planetary alignments change more slowly than Lunar and Solar alignments, we’ve been slowly building up to this for the past couple of days and will be feeling the reverberations for another couple more.  I will not deny that this gives me concern for the numerous Inauguration Day protests planned throughout the United States.  Given the stakes for the country if Putin’s coup and Trump’s resultant inauguration go unopposed, I’m not going to advocate for people not to protest, only for people to be careful and not allow themselves to be unduly provoked, as this alignment is likely to exacerbate an already volatile political climate.

That said, this alignment occurs within a Lunar void-of-course period set off by the Moon’s sextile to Saturn so soon before, with the resultant possibility that cooler heads will prevail (at least until this afternoon), as the void-of-course Moon helps us to see what to hold onto and what to let go of, and I am hoping that extends to tempers.  😉  Void-of-course Moon is also a time of heightened intuition, which I suspect is especially needed now, though it is also a time when we should stick to routine, and any bold new ventures or meetings now are likely to come to naught.  This period lasts until this afternoon, when the Moon enters Scorpio less than an hour after the Sun enters Aquarius, and shortly after that the Moon and Sun square each other.  Given the stubborn nature of both of these fixed signs, having our conscious and unconscious selves pitted against each other now is likely to generate additional frustrations.

The Sun in Aquarius makes us especially conscious of the individual’s place within society, and the ways in which the evolution of the individual shapes the evolution of society.  That’s all well and good, but this afternoon that consciousness is pitted against intense and secretive Scorpionic emotions and instincts, and with Scorpio’s classical ruler Mars squaring off against Saturn from the watery realm of Pisces, we are likely to experience those emotions seething under the surface at length, until they are set off by just the wrong social trigger.  There is some comfort perhaps in the mutual classical rulership of both Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, currently in the socially-conscious sign of Libra, but Saturn’s classical rulership of Aquarius makes it likely that the Sun in this placement will simply reinforce the chafing-against-authority feeling of the Mars/Saturn square, with authority sparking rebellion and rebellion inviting further clamping down by authority, continuing in ever-intensifying circles.

However, the Last Quarter Moon that begins today is a time for releasing and letting go.  Whatever we confront during this Mars/Saturn square, we need to exercise enough discernment to see what is worth keeping and what no longer serves us, and limit destruction only to what merits it.  The Mars/Saturn square is positioned against the backdrop of the ongoing Triangle of Potential between individualist Uranus in Aries, socially-minded Jupiter in Libra, and disciplined Saturn in Sagittarius encouraging us to restructure our world mindfully with a greater balance between self and society, even as the United States moves toward its Pluto return, when Pluto transits the same degree that it did when this nation was born.  Pluto, transcendental ruler of Scorpio where the Moon resides today, plays the long game with its multi-century orbit, and governs control, death, and transformation, sometimes all in the same intense package at once.  Little wonder then that these two squares and the larger configuration and current cycles all overlap and reinforce each other now.  Challenges like these are the catalysts to change and growth.  What we do with that impetus is up to us.

Astrology of January 5th, 2017: Needing Balance

batik-3-dark-and-light

I wish I could say that today is going to be an easy day, but I can’t.  Given all of the inspiring aspects that we’ve had during the past couple of weeks, the scales had to be balanced some time, and apparently that time is now.  Of course, the scales are getting balanced by an intense series of Lunar aspects hitting our emotions and instincts, so we may wind up feeling mighty unbalanced in the process before the day is done.

The day started off well enough in the very wee hours, with Uranus in Aries trining Juno, the asteroid of covenant relationships in Sagittarius, creating harmony between our individual impulses toward change and our ability to navigate mature partnerships and keep them in alignment with our ideals and personal freedom.  A few hours later, Venus in Pisces conjuncted Pallas in Pisces, enhancing our ability to enjoy navigating the patterns and networks of interconnected ideas in our lives, and to do so with flow and ease, which makes for a nice progression from the Uranus/Juno trine.

Mid-day the tension begins with the Moon in Aries squaring the Sun in Capricorn, which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t followed soon after by the Moon squaring Pluto in Capricorn.  Any time the Moon tangles with Pluto in a challenging aspect, emotions get amped up and we can wind up feeling out of control.  In this case, the Moon being in Aries can lead to fiery tempers under the best of circumstances, and facing down a square aspect with Pluto in Capricorn means that we may find our desires being thwarted by social structures and responsibilities that we would rather throw out the window now.  And following on the heels of the Moon/Sun square, both our conscious and unconscious selves are on alert, which heightens the impact.

The impatience of this Moon is likely to be increased this evening as the Moon conjuncts Uranus, the master of sudden upsets.  Any stability we’ve managed to maintain during this afternoon’s tussle with Pluto is likely to find the rug pulled out from under us, and our emotions may land us on a roller-coaster ride we did not sign up for!  On the plus side, Aries is already a master of anticipating and reveling in newness, so this conjunction could have pleasant surprises in store for us as well.  Of course, it’s followed within a couple of hours by the Moon opposing Jupiter, which magnifies whatever we’re feeling, so at that point whatever ride we’re on is likely to be a big one.

Thankfully, a half-hour later Saturn in Sagittarius gives us something solid to hold onto via a trine to that errant Aries Moon, so the evening ends feeling a little less likely to fly out of our seats!  Late-night tonight is thus a good time to catch our breaths, and feel some support from the Universe after the intensity of the day.
