Astrology Update, New Moon in Pisces, March 17th, 2018: Cultivating Compassion

The New Moon is a time when our conscious and unconscious selves are in alignment, our emotions and our core needs able to work together in service to a larger vision.  This makes the New Moon a perfect time to consider our goals and set our intentions for this lunar cycle, with the seeds we plant growing into fullness during the next two weeks between now and the Full Moon.

Conjunct to Chiron in Pisces, this New Moon sits closely with our oldest and deepest wounds, asking us to allow ourselves to feel where we hurt, and give ourselves the space and time to understand how and why we came by that injury.  With all three still loosely trined to Jupiter, we may find the floodgates open when it comes to what we are feeling, and secrets spilling forth that we never thought we’d admit to anyone. Yet somehow this is all okay. If we are willing to be compassionate with ourselves and others now (and this trio in Pisces makes it far more likely that we can be), then we may find ourselves relieved to be unburdened of that emotional weight we’ve been carrying around for so long.

With Venus and Mercury both in Aries, our thoughts and desires are oriented toward action, stirring the watery softness of the Pisces Sun/Moon/Chiron with direct and fiery expression.  Venus and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo now, keeping their potential for self-absorption in alignment with our karmic paths – though we may be focused on our personal thoughts and pleasures now, that focus is necessary to help us through the pain coming to the surface during this lunar season and to keep us from wallowing in it or becoming overwhelmed and drowning in feelings of self-pity and martyrdom.

Venus and Mercury are also squaring Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn now, forcing us to come to grips with our most self-defeating obsessions, and bringing an element of tough love into the mix.  Black Moon Lilith calls upon us to apply some objectivity to what we think and how we relate, and now we are likely to be confronted with the need to let some of our desires fall by the wayside in order to accomplish what is most important and necessary for our own growth.

At the time of the New Moon this morning, Mars was in Sagittarius still loosely trining Uranus in Aries, amplifying the fiery need for action and quickness, with the potential to yield sudden insight in connection with pursuit of our goals.  But that also placed Mars square to the Sun, Moon, and Chiron in Pisces, and then a few hours later, Mars entered Capricorn, squaring the Moon again after its entry into Aries near mid-day. This doubles the likelihood of our actions being at odds with our emotions and instincts both today and as we move forward into this lunar cycle.  We may find a degree of frustration with our emotions, impatience to get on with our goals in the real world without our fluctuating moods and injured feelings hindering our ability to get things done on a practical level. This frustration is a foreshadowing of more to come, as Mars moves into a conjunction with Saturn in Capricorn that will be exact on April 2nd but is colouring our actions for a week or so on either side.  Saturn being the cosmic taskmaster presenting obstacles and fears to grind action down to agonizing slowness or even a halt and Mars being our drive and active principle, we need to prepare now for the obstacles likely to hit us around the time of the April Fool’s Full Moon in Libra, lest we find ourselves the butt of a cosmic joke, an emotional Poisson d’Avril.

This is even more crucial given Mercury’s impending retrograde, which will be in full swing by the time of the Mars/Saturn conjunction.  In order to get through the immobilizing effect of that conjunction, we need the lessons of this Pisces New Moon to keep us flexible and forgiving, able to instinctively adapt to what faces us because we are willing to allow and accept our deepest sorrows and sensitivities now.  The time we take this lunar cycle to work through the hurts that we feel holding us back and the compassion that we exercise in doing so are necessary to help us get through more trying times to come. With that compassion bolstering our resolve, we can recognize the possibility for success no matter how insurmountable the obstacles before us may seem, and forgive ourselves for the mistakes and sacrifices that we must make along the way.

Astrology of February 12th, 2017: Faith and Sympathy

Today we still feel the residual effects of yesterday’s Sun in Aquarius trine Jupiter in Libra, enhancing our sense of good fortune and our consciousness in relation to our faith and ability to see the bigger picture, as well as our understanding of our relationships and social connections, and our dedication to our causes.

The day started out with an early-morning opposition between the Moon in Virgo and Neptune in Pisces, fogging up our instincts.  Virgo is ruled by Mercury (currently in Aquarius) and therefore the Moon in Virgo tends to be on the rational side and doesn’t know what to make of Neptune in Pisces and its dreamy, romantic outlook on the world.  When these two are in opposition we may find ourselves challenged to find the balance between Virgo’s detail-orientation and Pisces’ need to blur the boundaries and seek a more universal point of view.  Neptune has a bit of back-up here because of the Sun/Jupiter trine, as Jupiter is the classical ruler of Pisces and Neptune is the transcendental ruler.  Neptune is in the sign that they rule and Jupiter is supported by the Sun, the light of consciousness, so the Moon is likely to feel outnumbered, but since the Moon’s processes are unconscious, we need to be aware and compassionate with ourselves in response to any emotional confusion that we experience this morning.

This afternoon, the Moon in Virgo trines Pluto in Capricorn, and now our emotions get a powerful boost of Plutonian intensity, but since this is a supportive aspect, this may manifest as an instinctive understanding of the larger transformative forces in our lives that we may have previously felt powerless to resist.  We may now have a better feeling about just how to climb the mountains facing us, how to place our steps with sureness, prudence, and careful planning.  We may also have an instinct for ferreting out secrets at this time, and things may be revealed to us which may be beneficial to us so long as we are using them in the context of the larger picture and doing so serves the greater good.

Late tonight the Moon in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, giving our emotions and instincts another dose of Piscean sensitivity and putting us in jeopardy of allowing our compassion to get the better of us, putting us in a situation where our normal desire will be to be practical but our empathy will know that someone needs our help.  We may have to make a choice that puts us at a disadvantage, or that reveals a great weakness or an old wound.  We may find our good natures taken advantage of, but we may also learn a lot about ourselves and be capable of doing some serious good with our own knowledge about the hurts of others as a result of our experience with our own hurts.  Now is a time to be aware and neither martyr ourselves nor abandon others without good reason.  We can expand our kindness to embrace those who need it without true harm to ourselves, but the balancing act may not be comfortable.  Nonetheless, it may still be rewarding in terms of the wisdom gained.

Astrology of February 11th, 2017: An Expansive View

After all of the astrological activity yesterday, the limited number of aspects today might make things seem quiet by comparison.  However, what today lacks in quantity of events it makes up for in power.

The day started out with the Moon in Leo void-of-course until around dawn, when the Moon squared Black Moon Lilith shortly before entering Virgo.  As previously mentioned on this blog, Black Moon Lilith is in the final critical degree of Scorpio, and asks us to get clear on our focus and what we must let go of or surrender to in pursuit of our goals, particularly when it comes to our deepest, darkest emotional desires.  This challenge from the Moon this morning may well have put our emotions into a startlingly dark place after so much brightness yesterday, but there is still wisdom to be gained from this challenge playing out in our unconscious depths, however uncomfortably.

The Moon’s entry into Virgo immediately afterward gives our emotions and instincts some much-needed earthy grounding after of the air-fueled fiery intensity that was ruling the skies yesterday.  Of course, since the Virgo Moon is also known as the “Medicine Chest Moon” those of us who are particularly sensitive may be feeling the aftermath of yesterday’s fire physically today, so this is a time to tend to the body via exercise, nutrition, and rest.  Also, despite being an earth sign Virgo is ruled by Mercury (currently in Aquarius), so this is a time favoring mental processing, flavored by the social concerns of Aquarius, but also needing careful and detailed thought to tend to our own growth.  Virgo is known to be fact-finding, critical, and perfectionist, so we may feel some additional frustration when others don’t see eye-to-eye with us on how best to solve problems, or when our own plans fail to live up to our expectations, and we need to be careful not to beat ourselves up or play the martyr as a result.  However, Virgo is also good for having patience with process, understanding seasons and cycles, which is a useful awareness to combine with our instincts right now, especially after the powerful surge forward that yesterday’s cosmic activity may have directed us toward.  The Virgo Moon reminds us that the great problems of our time will not be solved in a day.  Patience and steady attention to detail are favored now.

A couple of hours later the two biggest gravitational forces in our solar system trined – the Sun in Aquarius and Jupiter in Libra – giving a massive surge of air power from those signs and emphasizing the use of reason and intellect in our social endeavors while connecting our relationships with our good fortune, whether those are personal relationships or group activities and causes.  Since Jupiter and the Sun move more slowly than the Moon, this aspect is in play all day today and into tomorrow, and we probably felt the build-up toward it as part of the powerful combination of energies during yesterday’s Full Moon and eclipse, which we are also still feeling the reverberations of today.  Now is a time to be conscious of all that we have to be grateful for, all that inspires us and strengthens our faith.  Not only spiritual faith is emphasized here but more importantly our faith that we are up to the tasks ahead of us, our faith that things will work out for the best, our trust in the Universe and our place in it.  Our philosophies and worldviews are highlighted during this time, and we have a greater capacity to accept viewpoints different from our own and integrate them into the bigger picture.  Just as Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn have been forming a Triangle of Potential over the past couple of months that is now slowly moving out of orb, the Sun during the past two days has been forming another Triangle of Potential with Jupiter and Uranus, supporting both our faith in social harmony and our rebellion and need for freedom in coming to a point of balance for the good of humanity as a whole, and today’s trine with Jupiter emphasizes the social side of that equation even more.

Toward mid-day, the last of today’s astrological aspects saw the Moon in Virgo conjunct the North Node, emphasizing instinctive attention to detail in terms of our karmic path.  You may remember that the North Node had the apex of the Finger of God (Yod) on it yesterday, and the Mercury/Venus sextile that triggered it is still loosely in effect today, so this continues the focus on our life’ purpose under pressure from our communication and our values, especially since Virgo’s ruler Mercury is one of the active players in this configuration.  Since the Moon is activating this configuration today, our focus here is not likely to be within the realm of conscious thought, but nonetheless our emotions and instincts on the subject today are likely to be more thoughtful, more concerned with the details and mechanisms of how things work, and what seemingly little things need to be tended to in order to realize the potential of the grand picture presented by the Sun/Jupiter trine dominating the day and the rest of the weekend.

Astrology of February 10th, 2017: Full Moon and Eclipse in Leo

The morning may seem clear of notable astrological  aspects, but don’t let that fool you – today is filled with some pretty powerful alignments, and this morning is simply a build-up of planetary energies in preparation for the cosmic spectacle this afternoon.

The day starts in style with Mercury in Aquarius sextiling Venus in Aries this afternoon, and since this is a planetary aspect its gently supportive effects will be felt throughout the day (part of the aforementioned build-up).  Those of us who made use of the more… affectionate side of all that fiery energy yesterday may well have something to talk about this morning, and the Mercury/Venus sextile helps to make such talks go smoothly, albeit with some spirit.  We are also likely to take a very personal pleasure in our communication with groups at this time, as well as communication in relation to social causes, so if you’ve got a fiery speech ready to persuade people to do the right thing, now’s the time to use it!

This Mercury/Venus sextile also is the base of a focused Yod (the “Finger of God”) along the Nodal Axis, with the apex at the North Node in Virgo and the releasing point at the South Node in Pisces.  This aspect combines the influence of Mercury and Venus to put pressure on the North Node via a pair of inconjuncts between the sextiling planets and the apex, and thus whatever use we make of our communication and affections at this time will draw attention to our karmic paths, whether for good or ill according to our free will.  That pressure may create a certain amount of instability in our efforts toward personal growth, but there is power there as well, to be used judiciously.  We may find ourselves falling back on the things that come most easily to us but don’t teach us anything new in an effort to relieve some of the pressure on the North Node, but now is a time to make that pressure work for us, especially with the rest of the astrological activity this afternoon and evening giving us the courage to do so.

This afternoon also sees a trine between the Moon in Leo and Uranus in Aries, continuing the fast-paced Uranian influence and the proud and expressive emotions and instincts of yesterday united in one powerful force.  Since this is a harmonious aspect, this is a great time to make use of an increased flow of creative ideas in moving ourselves forward in the hopes of staking a claim in our preferred realm, whatever that may be, though technological and forward-thinking endeavors are favored, as well as those which create social change.  Keep in mind that Uranus in aspect with the Moon increases the likelihood of mood fluctuations and sudden changes, but with a favorable aspect like this such changes are much easier to navigate, and may well be welcome distractions.

In the late afternoon and early evening we are treated to the combination of the Full Moon in Leo and a penumbral eclipse, when the Moon is shadowed not by the Earth herself but by the edge of her atmosphere, dimming the Moon’s reflection of the Sun’s light but not darkening it completely.  All Full Moons represent culminating energy, a time when the intentions we set at the New Moon come into their fullness, to be released out into the world during the waning of the Moon. The penumbral eclipse creates an added charge to this process, bringing us to a point of crisis that results in epiphany.  This is a time for breakthroughs, but they won’t be without cost.  Lunar eclipses tend to deal with our relationships, both one-on-one and those with a larger reach, and with the Leo/Aquarius polarity involved here there is an added emphasis on navigating the space between self and other, the personal and the impersonal, the needs of the individual versus the needs of the group.

A Leo Full Moon is a time to work on goals relating to self-expression, the arts, lovers, and children, which we are hoping to bring to fruition over the course of the next two weeks until the New Moon and then with the eclipse in the mix we can extend those goals and work on them within the larger pattern over the course of the next six months until the Solar eclipse in August.  Today’s Leo Moon cycles through harmonious aspects with all three of the outer planets involved in the Triangle of Potential that’s been in effect since the holidays, albeit now slowly drifting out of orb, so the Triangle is once again being activated by our emotions and instincts.  Thus, our goals for the rest of the month and for the next six months are going to work best when they take the themes of the Triangle of Potential into account:  balancing change and social harmony, individual growth and the growth of society, the need for freedom and the hope and luck generated by good relationships and partnerships in particular.  With Saturn being the mediator between Jupiter and Uranus in this balancing act, discipline will be necessary to carry us through, but that discipline does not need to become self-punishing.

In addition, yesterday’s Sun/Uranus sextile is still in effect, and the Sun opposing the Moon (which is what a Full Moon is) in combination with the Sun/Uranus sextile, the Moon/Uranus trine, the Moon/Jupiter sextile following shortly after the eclipse, tomorrow’s Sun/Jupiter trine (which is already being felt today), and the ongoing Jupiter/Uranus opposition all together form a Mystic Rectangle, a combination of polarities between Air and Fire, and Masculine and Feminine energies that requires that we give equal attention to all four bodies in these two oppositions (Sun/Moon, Jupiter/Uranus) and the elemental principles that they invoke, thought and spirit, communication and action, as well as temperaments of the four signs involved, Aquarius/Leo and Libra/Aries.  This is a beautifully optimistic configuration to use in putting our talents to work in connection with the Full Moon and eclipse energies.  Challenging, yes, but deeply beneficial if we make good use of it.  In particular we are being asked to balance our conscious and unconscious awareness, and our social and individual needs.  Tall order!  But a worthy one, and one which the combination of celestial events today make clear is well within our power.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, the Full/Eclipsed Moon in Leo activates a Grand Fire Trine with Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius, further emphasizing themes of revolutionary change backed by discipline and emotional fervor with courageous instincts.  Our spirits are blazing with this energy now, and so long as we don’t let it burn us out we can do amazing things with it, with a steady eye to the long term.    This configuration emphasizes our capacity to both ride and direct the waves of change sweeping through our lives in the next six months, both personally and politically.  There is no better time to get involved!

The Moon in Leo sextiling Jupiter in Libra this evening emphasizes the social aspect of this equation, helping us to see how we can express ourselves fully while still valuing and maintaining social harmony and balancing our needs with the needs of others.  This time sees the likelihood that legal matters will work in our favor and may smooth over our dealings with authorities.  It also increases our courage in social situations, making for a good start to the weekend.

Later tonight the Moon in Leo trines Saturn in Sagittarius, which may turn our mood a bit more serious, but since the trine is the most favorable of aspects that seriousness is likely to work to our advantage and bolster our courage.  We may well impress others with our dedication and loyalty at this time, especially if we have been making good use of today’s mojo in service to our very best goals.  Since this aspect starts a void-of-course period, any bold moves are best to have been begun before this late-night time, leaving the end of the night to socialize, plan, and put the finishing touches on the Full Moon and eclipse intentions that we are sending out into the world, and then to dream on them in the floating, intuitive time that the void-of-course brings.
