Astrology Update, Full Moon in Libra, March 30th, 2018: Traveling Companions

This weekend’s Libra Moon opposite the Aries Sun draws attention to how we bring ourselves as individuals to relationships, and how we keep our sense of self intact while respecting others and maintaining social harmony. Our instincts under a Libra Moon are peaceful, diplomatic, and sociable, but our core selves under the Aries Sun are self-assertive and driven, even aggressive, so we may find our softer reactions feeling almost self-sabotaging, especially since this Full Moon coincides with a conjunction between Mars and Saturn in Capricorn in a T-Square formation with the Sun and the Moon. When Mars and Saturn join forces, we can find ourselves experiencing powerful frustration connected to obstacles both real and perceived in Capricorn’s material realms. That said, when patiently and consciously applied, the energies of these combined forces can yield a powerful drive to overcome those obstacles, and when we are certain what we are we willing to go the distance for, Saturn’s patience with process and Mars’ martial spirit can help us manifest real outcomes where we may have previously felt powerless to succeed. Mars can stir the courage to persevere in the face of our worst Saturnine fears, and Saturn can steady the reins of an otherwise rambunctious Mars.

Mercury’s retrograde through Aries brings him conjunct the Sun at this Full Moon, increasing both our conscious awareness during this process and encouraging us to think twice about where we have been im communicating our personal needs within relationships. With the Sun and Mercury both in Aries, we may find ourselves taking an executive tone and identifying strongly with our ideas, which the square to Mars/Saturn may lead us to defend far more fiercely than usual if challenged. With Saturn in the mix not only are we likely to find our ideas challenged, we can find those challenges stirring our deepest fears and insecurities. This is a time to take a deep breath and cultivate our ability to see the silver lining in whatever storm clouds rear their heads, and learn what lessons may come from a willingness to see more than one side of any story. And because the Sun and Mercury are trining the North Node in Leo at this time, those lessons have the capacity to yield rich insights in connection with our karmic path, resulting in real progress in the ongoing journey of our souls. If we are willing to do the hard work that Mars and Saturn in Capricorn demand, we can weather any emotional and communicative upsets stirred up by these transits, and create lasting relationships of mutual benefit with our souls’ traveling companions that help clear the way before us in pursuit of our dearest long-term goals.

Astrology Update, April 29th, 2017: Loneliness and Home

Late this morning the Moon in Gemini sextiled Mercury retrograde in Aries and then Uranus in Aries in short succession, emphasizing the residual effects of yesterday’s Mercury/Uranus conjunction, so that our thoughts during this time continued to change rapidly, only our moods were in a state of flux as well.  Since the sextile is a gently harmonious aspect, these fluctuations were less challenging than they would be with a harder aspect, but still we were likely to be restless and wanting to shake things up, bored with the status quo and searching for excitement.  We were not likely to be shy about vocalizing our feelings under these aspects, and communication in general was emphasized, as was socialization and meeting new people.  This was not a time for focusing on important matters, as our thoughts were likely to be running too quickly to handle deep subjects or linger anywhere for long, and our moods were too fickle to sustain any real sense of dedication from late morning into the afternoon.

Into this volatile mix of fluctuating thoughts and feelings comes a jarring square from the Moon in Gemini to Chiron in Pisces, with an opposition from the Moon to Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius a few minutes later, stirring up the rising tide of hurt and trauma invoked by tomorrow’s square between Chiron and Saturn.  The Chiron/Saturn square has been lurking in the background for the past several days, as these are slow moving planets whose influence is felt long before and after an aspect between them becomes exact, and the Moon’s interaction with both of them today creates a tense T-square formation with Chiron acting as the release point for the isolation and enforced stoicism of the Moon/Saturn opposition, triggering our awareness of painful life lessons brought on by harsh emotional interactions.  This can be an incredibly depressive time, as we gain a heightened awareness of the disappointments and failures in our lives, and our outlook leans toward the cold and grim and lonely.  While the Moon’s interactions with both Saturn and Chiron have the blessed brevity of lunar aspects, they are an uncomfortable foreshadowing of tomorrow’s harsh square between those planets that has the potential to colour our feelings for the remainder of the day.  There is also the possibility that today’s T-square configuration will heightened tensions during the climate change marches planned across the United States today, and since Saturn governs restriction and law, and in hard aspects with Chiron increases the potential for abuse, those who are marching this afternoon would do well to take extra steps for self-protection.  With its opposition to Saturn the Moon turns void-of-course for several hours, making actions taken during the late afternoon and early evening less likely to amount to anything of consequence, which may be a blessing in view of the abusive potential of the T-square, but which also makes it harder for political actions taken during this time to be heard and taken seriously.  Our judgement is likely to be impacted as well, so this is not a time for bold and decisive action.

The Moon enters Cancer tonight, the sign that it rules, making our emotions more sensitive and more potent, so that whatever we are processing during this difficult time of the Chiron/Saturn square is likely to take on greater emotional significance.  Our emotions now are likely to center around home and family, as our loyalty is increased during this lunar transit, and we may feel very protective of both ourselves and those we love, but are also likely to relate the hurts we are processing to family and loved ones as well, so the Cancerian Moon’s closeness to home is a mixed blessing this weekend.  We are more sympathetic and intuitive during this transit, but also more inclined to feel sorry for ourselves, which makes for a rough way to navigate the Chiron/Saturn square, increasing the potential for us to feel lost in martyrdom and victimhood.  The Cancerian Moon can also increase our imagination and creativity, however, so now is a time to transmute our most difficult feelings into art and imaginative solutions, releasing what we feel through music and dance.  It is also a time to put in the extra effort toward creating emotionally safe space with those we are closest to, as challenging as that may be against the backdrop of the Chiron/Saturn square, because the need for such space is near and dear to the Cancerian heart, and it is a need which is especially poignant this weekend.

The Moon in Cancer gets a little bit of much-needed support tonight from a sextile to the North Node in Virgo, giving us an instinctual awareness of the process of our soul’s growth and how our feelings tonight further that growth.  Though our moods may fluctuate, they do so with attentiveness to the details of our experiences, helping us to work through and learn from what we are feeling rather than just feeling tossed about on the waves of emotion.  We should take the time to let ourselves feel deeply tonight while we have the capacity to look at those feelings with clarity and insight, and see them in the larger context of our souls’ path to perfection.

Astrology Update, March 12th, 2017: Full Moon in Virgo

The day started off early with a trine from the Moon in Virgo to Pluto in Capricorn in the wee hours of the morning, giving our emotions and instincts the support of the powerful and transformative forces in our lives.  For those of us sleeping at that time we may have experienced dreams with messages that can assist us in achieving our long-term goals in the material world.  For those of us awake during that time, we may have experienced an alignment between process and direction, increasing our understanding of the practical steps we need to take in service to our growth and ambition.  Regardless of sleeping or waking, our health may have gotten a transformative boost during this time, though that doesn’t automatically lead to feeling better, as sometimes healing processes can actually make us feel worse before we see improvement.

One of the two big astrological happenings of the day is this morning’s square between Mercury in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius.  We may experience issues with our communication throughout the day, unexpected limitations and restrictions in communications technology, or in our transportation.  This could manifest as a greater possibility of automobile accidents, but could just as easily show up as a decreased inclination to set foot outside of the house.  This aspect particularly calls to mind the ongoing problems with the United States’ “Muslim Ban” travel restrictions, and we may see more destructive consequences from that executive order today.  Regardless, the areas with the most potential for conflict today are communications and journeys that come up against restrictive belief systems and rules or laws based in those systems.  Since Mercury in Pisces makes us more inclined to be compassionate, this square heightens our frustration with these kinds of restrictions, and Pisces’ impetus to let go of what no longer serves us directs us to actively reject them.  Of course, Saturn in Sagittarius shows where we engage in such limiting behavior out of a sense of fear and insecurity disguised as righteous wrath, and Piscean gentleness and sensitivity may be hard-pressed to stand up in the face of that.  Pisces also governs escapism, and many of us may simply want to run away from the abrasive restrictions that we are confronted with today.  Our best chance for navigating this aspect is in exercising patience and self-discipline alongside compassion and intuition, and recognize that there is an opportunity for change here.

That change is connected with whatever we saw ourselves needing to get rid of at the time of the New Moon, whatever patterns we needed to complete in order to prepare ourselves for new beginnings in our lives.  The intentions that we set then are coming to their fullness today with this morning’s Full Moon in Virgo.  Full Moons are a time to fully understand the intentions set at the New Moon on both the conscious and unconscious level, perfect them, and then release them into the world to be disseminated for the duration of the next two weeks until the next New Moon.  Since the New Moon that we set our intentions at for this Full Moon coincided with the Annular Solar Eclipse in Pisces, those intentions actually have a much longer period of effect, spreading out over the next six months to the time of the Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st, 2017.  Today’s Full Moon in Virgo then has our instincts filled with awareness of the many details involved in our process of growth and healing between now and then, with the sense of seriousness and discipline that Saturn imparts mediating between our unconscious instincts and our Piscean consciousness striving to integrate those Virgoan details into the whole picture, blending and unifying our individual goals and struggles into a more compassionate vision of wholeness.  Because Saturn is squaring both the Moon in Virgo and Mercury in Pisces today, health issues are likely to come to the forefront, particularly those that are difficult to diagnose and cure, such as chronic illnesses, including autoimmune disorders.  Our sense of process under this Full Moon is more fraught with difficulty and prone to depression, and our escapist tendencies may feel more out-of-control than usual, with addiction potentially being a key component.  Detoxification is a necessity at this time, and it is definitely a good day for spring cleaning to aid in ridding ourselves of whatever may be holding us back.

Because the Moon in Virgo quincunxes Uranus in Aries at the time of the Full Moon, sudden change is also a hallmark of both our experiences today and the Full Moon’s effects over the next couple of weeks.  We may find ourselves feeling especially rebellious in the face of the issues brought up under this Moon, and may take actions that we never expected of ourselves.  Or, those around us may believe that we are behaving unusually, even radically, and may take exception to our behavior as being unnecessarily provocative, even if we have no conscious intentions to provoke.  Today may feel unstable and unruly as a result, and we would do well to expect the unexpected over the next two weeks.  The Sun is also inconjunct (quincunx) Jupiter at the time of the Full Moon, not exact, but still in orb to affect the overall dynamic today and during this Moon’s disseminating period, and together with the Moon/Uranus inconjunct creates a closed formation that amplifies the energies of both the Full Moon and these quincunxes, increasing the uncomfortable, volatile feeling of this Moon, and tying the personal struggle for completion and healing into the larger struggle for balance between the personal need for freedom and the societal need for harmony and balance in interpersonal relationships.

This afternoon the Moon in Virgo opposes Chiron in Pisces, continuing the emphasis on understanding the painful and traumatic patterns of our lives and how they have led us to our current state of ill-health, whether physical, mental, or emotional, personal or societal.  Now we are likely to see the little pieces in our history that contribute to the overall pattern, and gain a greater understanding of what parts of our past we need to make peace with in order to progress into a better future.  Difficult family histories are emphasized at this time, as well as the ways in which we feel better-equipped to help others than help ourselves, and we may struggle now with blurred personal boundaries that contribute to our pain.  On the plus side, our heightened awareness of these issues now increases the possibility of working through them, freeing ourselves of the chains of the past.

The Moon in Virgo squares Saturn in Sagittarius tonight and then shortly thereafter opposes Mercury in Pisces, creating a T-square aspect with today’s Mercury/Saturn square, with Saturn acting as the release point between Mercury and the Moon, as we strive to balance what we think and what we feel.  Saturn tends to create a deep sense of seriousness and even depression when in aspect to either the Moon or Mercury, so tonight we may find ourselves in a deep well of thought and feeling that if we are not careful can suck us down into despair.  Our fears and insecurities are likely to be heightened, feeling the pressure of the balancing act between thought and feeling, conscious awareness and unconscious reaction.  We may see the big picture but have trouble reacting in any way that does not stay mired down in details.  Or, we may know intuitively what we want and need, yet find it hard to master the process that will achieve what we desire.  Perhaps we need to steer ourselves away from a self-defeating perfectionism, but haven’t figured out how to halt our compulsions in their tracks, and the gloomy voice of time and mortality suggest that perhaps we never will.  The important part of navigating this difficult aspect configuration is to be patient with ourselves, staying mindful that no matter how dire things may seem, all is temporary.  Taking actions that help us to cultivate healthy habits can be incredibly helpful now in keeping us focused on growth and progress without getting lost in negativity.  This is especially true since the Moon/Mercury opposition starts a void-of-course period that can leave us feeling a bit lost – sticking to routine and focusing on the better side of habit tonight is the best course of action during this time.

Late tonight the Moon enters Libra, turning our instincts and emotions toward partnership and social harmony.  We may find that now we do not want to be alone, and for those of us in relationships our partners may help us in sorting through the feeling and revelations from this tumultuous day.  For those of us who are alone, we may find more solace in the arts and movement, as Libra is a Venus-ruled sign.  Regardless, this is a sign that is more dependent on surroundings, with or without people, so the next couple of days are good for further spring cleaning, as well as taking actions to promote balance in our lives and our environments.  We may find ourselves exercising decorative impulses, or taking more interest in our appearance, though we should be mindful that since Libra’s ruler Venus is currently in retrograde, what we are attracted to now may not be what we stay attracted to when Venus turns direct in April, so extreme make-overs might not be of lasting benefit.  Beware of impulse-buying at this time.  In business and leisure both, connecting with other people is favored under this Moon, so now is a good time to get out and meet with people, whether strengthening already-established connections or making new friends.  The Libra Moon can help us to balance the opposites we’ve been juggling recently, and perhaps give us some of the peace and harmony we’ve been craving.

Astrology Update, March 7th, 2017: Through the Waves

This morning the Moon in Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces in the wee hours of the morning, potentially enhancing our dreams with the combination of Cancerian and Piscean emotional sensitivity and psychic abilities.  We would do well to write down whatever we remember of our dreams as soon after waking as possible, as we may learn much about our own emotional landscape by reflecting on our dreams today.

Still in the early morning hours, the Moon in Cancer squares Venus in Aries.  Since Venus has just recently turned retrograde, she is already on unsteady footing, especially due to being in the  reflective, introspective mode of retrograde in such an active and driven sign.  Squaring the Moon in Cancer just highlights her uncertainty now, adding Cancerian moodiness and self-protectiveness into the mix, leading to potential insecurity and standoffishness or even outright hostility in our early morning dealings with others – a classic case of waking up on the wrong side of the bed.  Since this is a lunar influence and therefore acts on an unconscious level, we would do well to recognize that plenty of people around us are likely to be testy without knowing why, and take steps to guard our own emotional well-being accordingly.

Toward mid-day the Moon in Cancer trines the Sun in Pisces, creating greater ease and flow in emotional and intuitive matters, increasing our sympathy and willingness to assist and support each other.  This adds to the residual effects of yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and may bolster those of us in healing and service professions accordingly.  This time favors nurturing ourselves and our loved ones, exercising compassionate listening in order to understand our emotional connections and reactions and strengthen our bonds with those we feel kinship with.  This is an excellent time to foster community, particularly with those who bolster us creatively and spiritually, and this influence may also help us to find common ground with those we had not previously recognized as sharing such connections.

The Moon in Cancer trines Mercury in Pisces shortly thereafter, further emphasizing the qualities of both the Moon/Sun trine and yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, and increasing our capacity to communicate what we feel to others, as well as helping us to attune our thoughts and feelings, heightening our intuition and sensitivity.  Our thoughts may well turn to matters of home and family at this time, but may also benefit from Cancerian business sense now.  This is a good time for communications that benefit from a delicate touch, and breaking the ice in social settings may be easier now.

This afternoon, our emotions take on a degree of intensity as the Moon in Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn, pitting what we feel against the great impersonal forces of our lives that affect our careers, reputations, and long-term goals.  We may find ourselves feeling defensive now, or struggling to maintain emotional control.  We may find our moods hijacked by the interference of others, and need to guard against getting sucked into power struggles.  Now is definitely a time to step aside, take a deep breath, and channel the power of what we feel into the energy we need to get done what we can, while recognizing that even if this influence throws us off course during this time that derailment is still only temporary.

This evening the Moon in Cancer squares first Jupiter in Libra then Uranus in Aries in short succession, highlighting the lingering effects of last week’s Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is still in close orb and will be continuing to influence us through mid-March.  Our emotions and reactions tonight are caught up in the tug-of-war between the personal and the societal, the desire for aggressive and radical action in service of personal freedom versus the desire for peace and social harmony at all costs, and we may find our interpersonal relationships affected as a result.  We may be prone to sudden outbursts of emotion or mood fluctuations, and Jupiter’s touch is likely to make everything feel larger than life.  This is a T-square formation with the Moon acting as the release point between Jupiter and Uranus, our emotions and instincts becoming the pressure valve for the personal and societal tensions pitted against each other.  We are navigating stormy waters during this time and the more sensitive among us may be hard-pressed to make it through without the support of our more stalwart companions.

Late tonight Mercury in Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, giving some support to our ability to communicate about the deepest, darkest parts of our experience now, and helping us further in shedding thought and communication patterns that no longer serve us.  This influence may also aid our facility to communicate with and about those in power.  Secrets may be revealed now, and occult matters are favored at this time.  For the magically inclined among us this is a good time for spell-working, particularly in relation to correcting power imbalances and defending the powerless from abuses of power.  Of course, this applies in more mundane realms as well.  This is a good time for tending to legal and monetary matters, and those working in the intelligence community may gain a boost at this time, as well as those working as detectives or researchers.  Tonight we may gain deeper insight into our own long-term goals and how we may fulfill our ambitions while being of service to humanity.

This aspect is followed by the Moon in Cancer trining Chiron in Pisces, putting us emotionally in-touch with our deepest hurts and damaging patterns in a deeply supportive way, so that we may use what we feel to help purge the poison of old traumas, and as a result share both greater vulnerability and greater closeness with those whom we love.  This tempest-tossed night comes to a close with a potential gift of deep, intuitive wisdom to dream on.

Astrology of December 2nd, 2016

The Magnetic Quality of Stillness

Mercury enters Capricorn today.

The Moon in Capricorn is emotionally and instinctively prepared to climb any mountain in pursuit of its goals.  That’s good, because today it’s got a bunch of mountains to challenge it and all of us here on Earth in the process.

The majority of the aspects that I discuss here on any given day are Lunar aspects because the Moon moves so quickly through the signs, spending only about 2.5 days in each sign.  The Sun and the planets take much longer to move through each sign, and thus the aspects they make with each other occur less frequently.  That said, because they are moving more slowly through the signs, the aspects that they make are of a longer duration and even when they are no longer exact those aspects are still being felt in the background while the Moon zips through its aspects of the day.  And on days like today, the Moon touches players in those longer aspects, re-emphasizing their influences through our feelings, instincts, and subconscious behaviors.

One of those aspects currently in play is the waxing (widening) Pluto/Uranus square that I’ve mentioned a lot in recent years.  There were a series of seven exact squares between these two planets over the past four years due to retrograde motion – they would start to separate and then move back close again, and while this was going on for a lot of people down here on Earth things seemed to be falling apart.  Pluto deals with issues of power and control, institutions such as governments, banks, corporations, hospitals, and organized crime, as well as transformation and death.  In earthy Capricorn, Pluto’s action is tenacious, firmly devoted to upholding the status quo, and unwilling to back down for anything or anyone that challenges its goals.  Uranus deals with science, technology, rebellion, revolution, and sudden change, as well as sudden flashes of insight.  Uranus is electric, and in Aries, that electricity is likely to start fires, like job losses, bankruptcies, divorces, and health crises on the personal level, and bank failures, corporate upheavals, and revolutions on the national and global levels.  Aries is heroic, aggressive, and every bit as stubborn as Capricorn, though it has a much harder time planning for the long haul (hence the longevity issues of the Occupy movement, a distinctly Uranus-in-Aries entity).

The square aspect is what is known as a “hard” aspect, which is confrontational and tends to shake things up, and of all of the hard aspects the square is arguably the hardest.  Even when we can see the merit in the lessons being brought into focus by the square, those lessons are tough love at best.  In the case of this particular square, we’ve seen people all over the planet waking up to insights about what their governments and banks and corporations are doing to ordinary people and to the planet, and how going-along-to-get-along just upholds that ugly status quo.  With increased communication across large distances resulting from the Internet (a Uranian technology), it’s been harder for those institutions to keep a lid on those insights and the rebellion brewing in their wake.  Harder, yes, but they are well-equipped to fight back, with armed police and illegal surveillance and well-funded political action committees.  And that’s just the beginning.  Those who are in power now didn’t get there quickly or easily, and they are well-entrenched and playing a long game.  Uranus in short-tempered Aries might be explosive, but by itself it doesn’t have what it takes to survive a war with Pluto in Capricorn.  And now that it’s slowly gaining distance on Pluto, moving out of that square, it might well seem like the monolithic forces of entrenched oligarchy have won.

Enter Jupiter in Libra.

Jupiter just bumped up against Pluto last week via a waning square, foreshadowing the intensity of their upcoming conjunction in 2020.  Jupiter magnifies Libra’s concern with relationships and social harmony.  Libra is the great mediator and Jupiter is classical astrology’s Greater Benefic, benevolent and magnanimous, and deeply concerned with our faith and belief in the greater good.  Typically, even square aspects with Jupiter are considered more fortuitous and easier to endure than those between other planets.  Except for that pesky tendency of Jupiter to magnify whatever it touches.  And the fact that in the process of moving into square aspect with Pluto, Jupiter moved closer to an opposition with Uranus, which will be exact toward the end of December.  As I’ve mentioned before, the opposition in astrology is a hard aspect like the square but also has the greatest capacity for the planets involved to see each other, to learn from and come to understand each other.  So here we have Jupiter, in a sign of peace, electrified by Uranian insight and rebellion, taking a magnifying glass to Pluto and the powers-that-be and saying “no, really, something’s gotta give.”

Remember, all of this is taking place in three out of the four cardinal signs – Aries, Libra, and Capricorn, with the missing fourth cardinal sign being Cancer.  The cardinal signs govern initiatory energy in each of the four elements.  Cardinal signs start shit!  If there’s a tussle going on somewhere, chances are that a cardinal influence started it.  The tense aspect currently going on between Jupiter, Pluto, and Uranus is what is known as a T-square, and in order for the tension to be released, all of the parties involved need to take on some of the qualities of the missing sign, Cancer.  A few that spring to mind are: emotional sensitivity, loyalty toward and protectiveness of home and family, and a canny business sense.  Of course, those parties taking on Cancerian virtues is not going to happen through osmosis – each of those forces (the rebel, the status quo, and the peacemaker) needs to take the initiative to bring that missing influence to the table.  Cancerian love of home and family can only help if Jupiter can persuade both Uranus and Pluto that we are all still indeed family, and Cancerian business sense only works if Pluto in particular recognizes that it’s not actually good business to keep a death-grip on fossil fuel technologies that have us racing headlong toward extinction.  But one can hope, and if there’s one thing Jupiter is good at, it’s hope.

Why this lengthy explanation of all of these far-reaching, generation-shaping influences at work?  Because today, the Moon in Capricorn hits hard aspects with each and every one of them, and makes aspects with nothing else.  And on top of that, Mercury enters Capricorn today, and so our minds and communication today have entered a realm where we are focused on the hard climb ahead of us, planning how to tackle these challenges, while the Moon is grappling with each of them in turn, and our emotions and instincts will feel that struggle.  No matter how well we may have weathered the past few years, today on both a conscious and subconscious level we know that it is not enough to watch the big forces of history and hope that they will pass us by without harm.  Like it or not, if we didn’t realize it before, today we learn that each of us has skin in this game.
