Tarot for January 27th, 2017: Defeat

Today’s Tarot card is the 5 of Swords (Defeat).

The fives in the Minor Arcana of Tarot represent the trials of humanity, stumbling points that we need to work through as part of the self-teaching process of the Major Arcana (V) The Hierophant.  We saw the 5 of Wands (Strife) yesterday.  Seeing the 5 of Swords (Defeat) today suggests that this is part of a pattern, and that we are in a time when we need to burn through a lot of karma in order to get unstuck and progress.

The Swords are the suit of elemental air, invoking reason, communication, and all mental processes.  The 5 of Swords is ruled by Venus in Aquarius.  This is something of an uncomfortable place for Venus.  On one hand, Aquarius is socially-minded and friendly.  On the other hand, Aquarius is often more interested in many people than one, more inclined to be drawn to groups than to individuals, and as an air sign is more comfortable with thoughts than feelings.  Venus wants affection, pleasure, creature comforts.  Aquarius will happily sacrifice all of those in the name of the greater good.  Venus in this space then becomes thwarted by subverting the needs of the one to the needs of the many.

Venus governs what we value, and her placement here is ultimately concerned with what is the value of the individual to the group.  Aquarius is very concerned with the evolution of the individual as a means toward the evolution of humanity as a whole.  The danger comes when, in the quest to meet the needs of the group, we ignore or deny the needs of the individual.  Aquarius is distinctly prone to becoming a victim of group-think.  It should be noted that while social clubs and many worthy political causes are Aquarian institutions, so was the Third Reich.  The group is not always right, yet because of our Venusian need for affection and connection, all too often we go along to get along, allowing that need for connection to connect us to very poisonous attitudes.  And when we value what the group thinks more than our own feelings, we set ourselves up for a fall.

It is notable that so many modern astrologers consider Aquarius to be a sign of the individual, the rebel, in large part because they view Uranus as the modern-day ruler of Aquarius and have discarded the classical rulership of Aquarius by Saturn.  Yet Aquarius is still the sign that rules the 11th house, the house of friendships and causes and group relations.  Aquarius is the sign that governs the social order, and order is within the realm of Saturn.  Yes, Aquarius is concerned with the future (Uranus), but what society worth continuing isn’t?  Aquarius comes at the end of January, named for the two-headed Roman god Janus looking both backward and forward, appropriate for a sign ruled by Saturn in the past and Uranus in the future.  This dynamic plays out in the 5 of Swords with negative thought patterns that we’ve internalized in the 5 of Swords keeping us trapped in the past, resenting our defeats and despairing for the future.

The Thoth deck version of this card shows the fallen petals of the rose of love and wisdom that has been torn apart by the five swords, forming the downward-pointing pentagram that symbolizes the ascendancy of matter over spirit.  The mind here is not a stabilizing force, the well-being of the group at the expense of the individual’s spirit is confining and destructive, and the classical Saturnine rulership of Aquarius asserts itself with depressive force.  The 5 of Swords gives us the opportunity to recognize this dynamic and learn from our defeats rather than simply railing against fate.  Instead of dividing our minds between what we think and all of the internalized beliefs we have absorbed from others around us, it is time to cut away the excess mental chatter that our affection for our social structure has saddled us with.  Rather than passively accepting our lot and becoming weaker for it, we need to stop wallowing in the past and in the sensations brought about by group fears, sensations that have hijacked our wills.  We need to stop fighting old battles, recognize that we are feeding our own defeat, and seek a new direction.

Astrology of January 1st, 2017: Mentally Stimulating

Happy New Year!

Many of us may still be feeling the effects of indulgence resulting from last night’s Mars/Neptune conjunction, but the heavens have been fairly kindly this morning via three favorable aspects from the Moon in Aquarius, first in a supportive sextile to Uranus in Aries, then trined to Jupiter in Libra, and finally sextile to Saturn in Sagittarius, all in quick succession due to the continuing Triangle of Potential formed between these three outer planets in which the normally stern influence of Saturn becomes the disciplined mediator between Jupiter and Uranus calling attention to the balancing act between the desire for social harmony and the individually-fueled need for change.  Saturn here helps to pace these two, who left to their own devices would rush headlong into sudden change and blow both that desire for change and the results all out of proportion.  The Moon aspecting each of these three players brings the opportunities inherent in this configuration into focus through our emotions and instincts, and gives us great potential for diving into our New Year’s resolutions as soon as last night’s Mars/Neptune blurriness wears off (likely not until tomorrow…).

The afternoon and evening are fairly quiet in astrological terms until one minute before the witching hour Pacific Time, when the Moon conjuncts Venus in Aquarius, beginning a short void-of-course period before entering Pisces in the wee hours of tomorrow morning.  This is a great time to indulge in activities that are mentally stimulating but otherwise not too taxing.  Sounds like the perfect night to curl up with a good book.  🙂

Astrology of December 25th, 2016: A Bounty of Love

Most of the day is spent under a void-of-course Moon in Scorpio, but whether you’re celebrating Christmas or eating Chinese food and watching movies or starting your Hanukkah celebrations, chances are that you don’t have to do anything requiring a more active and outward focus, so this is a good day for it.  Plus, Venus livens up the day with some social congeniality by cozying up to Jupiter, Uranus, and Saturn at 20 degrees of their respective signs over the course of the morning.  Three supportive aspects with the personal planet of love, affection, and wealth sounds like a pretty good day to me!

The day did start out first thing in the wee hours with an inconjunct from the Moon in Scorpio to Uranus in Aries, but this is one of the few inconjunct types with a greater capacity to break through the inherent incomprehension between the two bodies in this placement due to the joint rulership of Aries and Scorpio by Mars.  For those who were awake at that time, there may have been a bit of agitation resulting, but since this was a Lunar aspect it is doubtful that any of that energy remains now.

What dominates the astrological news of the day is the trio of Venus aspects that happened over the course of this morning, which set a wonderful tone for the entire day and potentially carry over some good feelings into tomorrow as well, since these aspects are all between planets, and that means that they have more staying power than aspects formed by the more quickly-moving Moon.  First there was the trine between Venus in Aquarius and Jupiter in Libra, the Lesser Benefic and Greater Benefic of the Zodiac connecting in the most harmonious and supportive of aspects.  Love, affection, pleasure, wealth – all of these are in Venus’ domain, while Jupiter encourages wealth as well along with luck, generosity, and faith.  This is a major feel-good aspect that few others can compete with!  A sextile from Venus in Aquarius to Uranus in Aries followed, with the potential for the pleasurable feeling of the day to be accompanied by many “a-ha!” moments and a strong interest in trying new things, broadening our minds and experiences.  And finally, Venus sextiled Saturn in Sagittarius, the old Cosmic Taskmaster, who is apparently feeling more congenial this weekend after his trine with Uranus yesterday, and therefore gives some staying power to the fun and festivities today, and reinforces the ties that bind between family and friends in an unusually loving and enjoyable way.

The combination of all three of these aspects creates a wonderful balance between individual and group needs and interactions, and gives us an opportunity to mend and strengthen our connections with each other with a strong sense of fun and belief in each other, as well as genuine affection.

The one downside to the astrological love-fest is that Trans-Neptunian body Chiron is also at 20 degrees today in Pisces, and while it thankfully never forms an exact square with Saturn during this time (wait for spring for that!), it is still in a close enough orb to potentially dredge up some pain surrounding our relationships with father figures, especially those we have felt separated from, thanks to the simultaneous inconjunct formed by Chiron and Jupiter (also not exact, but still in close orb).  However, with Jupiter in such a strong supportive aspect with Venus, and Saturn being supported as well via the less powerful but still harmonious sextile with Venus, the parental figures of the Zodiac are emphasized today in an incredibly loving and accepting way, and that now gives us a beautiful opportunity for healing.  We now have the potential for any confrontation with our pain surrounding parental authority to be in the service of healing ourselves and our wounded relationships, deepening our affection for each other as a result of the limitations in our histories, even and sometimes especially the most difficult ones.

This is a day to enjoy and to strengthen our hearts with!  Bright Blessings to all of us and our loved ones, whether two-legged or four-legged.  🙂

Astrology of December 24th, 2016: A Day to Get Things Done!

folk-town-by-night-edit

The Moon in Scorpio gives intensity and focus to our emotions and instincts today, and is supported by three lovely aspects from early morning to afternoon.  In the wee hours we saw a trine from the Moon in Scorpio to Neptune in Pisces, giving power to our dreams and a spiritual, romantic glow to our mood, hopefully resulting in some good dream journaling for those who have been taking advantage of that practice.  That was followed a few hours later by the Moon sextiling Mercury in Capricorn, so that what we’ve been thinking about and expressing during this time has been supportive of what we feel.  Of course, since Scorpio tends to be secretive and a Mercury in Capricorn is often on the reticent side, that probably hasn’t made for a lot of discussion this morning and heading into the afternoon, but at least it’s not likely to be an uncomfortable silence.  😉  However, this is a great time for reflective thought on the hidden parts of our lives – whatever truths we uncover now we are likely to be ready to face rationally and make good use of the insights we find.

The big astrological news today is the trine from Saturn in Sagittarius to Uranus in Aries, exact in the late afternoon/early evening, but exerting its influence all weekend due to the slow movement of these planets.  This is an alliance between our need for change and our discipline, giving us the strength and energy to do what needs to be done in service both to our highest ideals and the fulfillment of our individual paths.  The Moon in Scorpio sextile Pluto in Capricorn following within 4 minutes of the exact Saturn/Uranus trine only strengthens our resolve.  This is an amazing time for getting things done!  It’s also a wonderful time to gain insights about our own insecurities and inhibitions in ways that we can face and work through, recognizing that even though we are imperfect, those imperfections are likely not as terrible as we often make them out to be.  Uranus celebrates the unique, and our flaws are part of what contributes to each person’s distinctiveness and our souls’ beauty.  We are perfect in our imperfection.

Since Uranus loves the shocking and new, we may experience some surprises this weekend, but Saturn lends a steadying hand to keep those surprises from being too out-of-control.  The combination of Saturn and Uranus this weekend is a wonderful one for celebrations, since Uranus encourages us to be lively and let down our hair and Saturn keeps Uranus from getting excessive and helps us pace ourselves, while Uranus keeps Saturn from getting too stuffy and rules-bound.

The only slight dampener to the day is a square from the Moon in Scorpio to Venus in Aquarius at the end of the night, and even that isn’t too disruptive, just perhaps encouraging us to take a break from some of the emotional intensity of this weekend and enjoy some more mental pursuits like reading or a good film or good late-night conversation around pilfered milk and cookies.  😉  This starts a void-of-course period that will last through most of tomorrow, making that day a day to enjoy the companionship of loved ones without starting anything new and important or doing anything particularly serious beyond having a good time together.  🙂

Astrology of December 22nd, 2016: A Giddy Current

fire-and-water-detail-oil

All of today’s astrological action happened during the first half of the day, with the second half of the day being a void-of-course period, and the aspects of the day have all been Lunar, so this is an outline of the influences on our instincts and feelings leading us into the afternoon and some suggestions about where we should go from there.  Chances are that these influences will linger in our subconsciousness for a little while longer moving into the afternoon until being scattered on the timeless tide of the void-of-course.

The day started out with an early morning square from the Moon in Libra to Pluto in Capricorn, creating emotional intensity when our more peaceable instincts bumped up against our desire to maintain control (or the illusion thereof) in relation to our goals.  Thankfully, that was followed shortly by the Moon trining Venus in Aquarius, putting our instincts and our affections in harmony, so even with the intensity of the Moon/Pluto square, the rough edges were hopefully smoothed out with Venusian friendliness.

Several hours later the Moon in Libra conjuncted Jupiter, and whatever we were feeling earlier may have gotten much bigger.  That multi-hour gap between aspects was a benefit that hopefully kept the Plutonian influence from getting too unruly, but let’s not make assumptions about the potential for lingering feelings to get blown out of proportion. However, the Moon/Jupiter conjunction was very shortly followed by the Moon sextiling Saturn in Sagittarius, bringing some support in the nick of time in the areas of self-discipline and boundary setting.

That said, the morning ended with the Moon in Libra opposing Uranus in Aries (a flipped version of a natal aspect I know all-too-well), bringing sudden changes of mood and the urge to seek out the new and unusual.  A bit of bravado may have come with this thanks to the current Aries posture of the cosmic rebel Uranus, so we would do well to use whatever remains of Saturnine caution to keep from diving headfirst into foolhardiness as we head into the afternoon.

The rest of the day is one long void-of-course period, so this is not a day for lofty new enterprises, contrary to what the remnants of that Moon/Uranus may suggest – even though we can try new things we should not build new foundations to projects we care about, or meet with new people we hope to depend upon in any way, as they are likely to turn out to be very different than whatever they seem like today.  Since the void-of-course Moon favors routine and the Moon/Uranus opposition favors anything but, this afternoon may struggle with regard to productivity at work, but it’s not a completely useless time. This is a great time for reviewing the status of projects, correcting mistakes, and finishing what we can before kicking up our heels for an impromptu gathering of friends, and once we no longer have any responsibilities to worry about we definitely should try new things!  That new restaurant we’ve been wanting to check out?  Perfect!  New games or creative experiments?  Definitely.  The void-of-course Moon is floating between its last aspect in Libra and its entry into Scorpio tomorrow morning, so we should join it and float through the current of giddy sociability and excitement that marks the entire second half of this day.
